This is mostly code churn, with exception of a few places:
- intel_display.c has changes in intel_sanitize_encoder
- intel_ddi.c has intel_ddi_fdi_disable calling intel_ddi_post_disable,
and required a function change. Also affects intel_display.c
- intel_dp_mst.c passes a NULL crtc_state and conn_state to
intel_ddi_post_disable for shutting down the real encoder.
If we would pass conn_state, then conn_state->connector !=
intel_dig_port->connector and conn_state->best_encoder !=
to_intel_encoder(intel_dig_port).
We also shouldn't pass crtc_state, because in that case the
disabling sequence may potentially be different depending on
which crtc is disabled last. Nice way to introduce bugs.
No other functional changes are done, diff stat is already huge.
Each encoder type will need to be fixed to use the atomic states
separately.

Try to detect the max TMDS clock limit for the DP++ adaptor (if any)
and take it into account when checking the port clock.
Note that as with the sink (HDMI vs. DVI) TMDS clock limit we'll ignore
the adaptor TMDS clock limit in the modeset path, in case users are
already "overclocking" their TMDS links. One subtle change here is that
we'll have to respect the adaptor TMDS clock limit when we decide whether
to do 12bpc or 8bpc, otherwise we might end up picking 12bpc and
accidentally driving the TMDS link out of spec even when the user chose
a mode that fits wihting the limits at 8bpc. This means you can't
"overclock" your DP++ dongle at 12bpc anymore, but you can continue to
do so at 8bpc.
Note that for simplicity we'll use the I2C access method for all dual
mode adaptors including type 2. Otherwise we'd have to start mixing
DP AUX and HDMI together. In the future we may need to do that if we
come across any board designs that don't hook up the DDC pins to the
DP++ connectors. Such boards would obviously only work with type 2
dual mode adaptors, and not type 1.

The recent commit [0bdf5a0564: drm/i915: Add reverse mapping between
port and intel_encoder] introduced a reverse mapping to retrieve
intel_dig_port object from the port number. The code assumed that the
port vs intel_dig_port are 1:1 mapping. But in reality, this was a
too naive assumption.
As Martin reported about the missing HDMI audio on his SNB machine,
pre-HSW chips may have multiple intel_dig_port objects corresponding
to the same port. Since we assign the mapping statically at the init
time and the multiple objects override the map, it may not match with
the actually enabled output.
This patch tries to address the regression above. The reverse mapping
is provided basically only for the audio callbacks, so now we set /
clear the mapping dynamically at enabling and disabling HDMI/DP audio,
so that we can always track the latest and correct object
corresponding to the given port.

Currently we check if the encoder's idea of dotclock agrees with what
we calculated based on the FDI parameters. We do this in the encoder
.get_config() hooks, which isn't so nice in case the BIOS (or some other
outside party) made a mess of the state and we're just trying to take
over.
So as a prep step to being able sanitize such a bogus state, move the
the sanity check to just after we've read out the entire state. If
we then need to sanitize a bad state, it should be easier to move the
sanity check to occur after sanitation instead of before it.

The total delay of HDMI hotplug detecting with 30ms have already
been split into a resolution of 3 retries of 10ms each, for the worst
cases. But it still suffered from only waiting 10ms at most in
intel_hdmi_detect(). This patch corrects it by reading hotplug status
with 4 times at most for 30ms delay.

I broke AVI/HDMI/SPD infoframes on HSW+ with the register type
safety changes. We were supposed to check that the infoframe data
register is valid before writing the infoframe data, but the check
ended up inverted, and so in practice we never wrote or enabled
these infoframes.
We were still sending out the GCP infoframe when the sink was
deep-color capable. That and the fact that we use a single
bool to track our infoframe state meant that the state checker
only caught this when a HDMI sink that doesn't do deep-color was
used.
We really need to fix our infoframe state checking to be much
more anal. But in the meantime let's just fix the regression.
In fact let's just throw out the register validity check and
convert some of the "unknown info frame type" debug messages
into MISSING_CASE(). So far we support the same set of infoframe
types on all platforms, so the silent debug messages make no
sense.

Here are the patchset to add get_eld op to audio component for
communicating more directly between i915 and HD-audio.
Currently, the HDMI/DP audio status and ELD are notified and obtained
via the hardware-level communication over HD-audio unsolicited event
and verbs although the graphics driver holds the exactly same
information. As we already have a notification via audio component,
this is another step forward; namely, the audio driver may fetch
directly the audio status and ELD via the new component op.

This patch adds a reverse mapping from a digital port number to
intel_encoder object containing the corresponding intel_digital_port.
It simplifies the query of the encoder a lot.
Note that, even if it's a valid digital port, the dig_port_map[] might
point still to NULL -- usually it implies a DP MST port. Due to this
fact, the NULL check in each place has no WARN_ON() and just skips the
port. Once when the situation changes in future, we might introduce
WARN_ON() for a more strict check.

The cherryview device shares many characteristics with the valleyview
device. When support was added to the driver for cherryview, the
corresponding device info structure included .is_valleyview = 1.
This is not correct and leads to some confusion.
This patch changes .is_valleyview to .is_cherryview in the cherryview

Then where appropriate, instances of IS_VALLEYVIEW are replaced with

Currently the gmbus code uses intel_aux_display_runtime_get/put in an

The .get_config() hooks should not reference anything in crtc->config,
everything should be based on the passed in pipe_config instead. So
don't dig out the cpu_transcoder from crtc->config on ddi platfforms,
and also avoid using the encoder->crtc link and instead look up the
pipe via pipe_config->base.crtc.
I don't think this will actually fix anything since during the initial
state readout we set up the encoder->crtc link prior to calling
.get_config(), and during the modeset state check the encoder->crtc
ought to be correct anyway since it's that state we just programmed.
But this seems the right thing to do anyway.
While at it, do some house cleaning on the local variables in the
.infoframe_enabled() hooks.

Make I915_READ and I915_WRITE more type safe by wrapping the register
offset in a struct. This should eliminate most of the fumbles we've had
with misplaced parens.
This only takes care of normal mmio registers. We could extend the idea
to other register types and define each with its own struct. That way
you wouldn't be able to accidentally pass the wrong thing to a specific
register access function.
The gpio_reg setup is probably the ugliest thing left. But I figure I'd
just leave it for now, and wait for some divine inspiration to strike
before making it nice.
As for the generated code, it's actually a bit better sometimes. Eg.
looking at i915_irq_handler(), we can see the following change:
lea 0x70024(%rdx,%rax,1),%r9d
mov $0x1,%edx
- movslq %r9d,%r9
- mov %r9,%rsi
- mov %r9,-0x58(%rbp)
- callq *0xd8(%rbx)
+ mov %r9d,%esi
+ mov %r9d,-0x48(%rbp)
callq *0xd8(%rbx)
So previously gcc thought the register offset might be signed and
decided to sign extend it, just in case. The rest appears to be
mostly just minor shuffling of instructions.

Doing the IBX transcoder B workaround causes underruns on
pipe/transcoder A. Just hide them by disabling underrun reporting for
pipe A around the workaround.
It might be possible to avoid the underruns by moving the workaround
to be applied only when enabling pipe A. But I was too lazy to try it

want to change it too hastily.
Note that this can re-enable underrun reporting on pipe A if was

Revision checks are almost always accompanied by a platform check. (The
exceptions are platform specific code.) Add helpers to check for a
platform and a revision range: IS_SKL_REVID() and IS_BXT_REVID(). In
most places this simplifies and clarifies the code. It will be obvious
that revid macros are used for the correct platform.
This should make it easier to find all the revision checks for
workarounds for each platform, and make it easier to remove them once we
drop support for early hardware revisions.

This patch adds a separate probe function for HDMI
EDID read over DDC channel. This function has been
registered as a .hot_plug handler for HDMI encoder.
The current implementation of hdmi_detect()
function re-sets the cached HDMI edid (in connector->detect_edid) in
every detect call. This function gets called many times, sometimes
directly from userspace probes, forcing drivers to read EDID every
detect function call. This causes several problems like:
1. Race conditions in multiple hot_plug / unplug cases, between
interrupts bottom halves and userspace detections.
2. Many Un-necessary EDID reads for single hotplug/unplug
3. HDMI complaince failures which expects only one EDID read per hotplug
This function will be serving the purpose of really reading the EDID
by really probing the DDC channel, and updating the cached EDID.
The plan is to:
1. i915 IRQ handler bottom half function already calls
intel_encoder->hotplug() function. Adding This probe function which
will read the EDID only in case of a hotplug / unplug.
2. During init_connector this probe will be called to read the edid
3. Reuse the cached EDID in hdmi_detect() function.
The "< gen7" check is there because this was tested only for >=gen7
platforms. For older platforms the hotplug/reading edid path remains same.
v2: Calling set_edid instead of hdmi_probe during init.
Also, for platforms having DDI, intel_encoder for DP and HDMI is same
(taken from intel_dig_port), so for DP also, hot_plug function gets called
which is not intended here. So, check for HDMI in intel_hdmi_probe
Rely on HPD for updating edid only for platforms gen > 8 and also for VLV.
v3: Dropping the gen < 8 || !VLV check. Now all platforms should rely on
hotplug or init for updating the edid.(Daniel)

The Bspec is very clear that Live status must be checked about before
trying to read EDID over DDC channel. This patch makes sure that HDMI
EDID is read only when live status is up.
The live status doesn't seem to perform very consistent across various
platforms when tested with different monitors. The reason behind that is
some monitors are late to provide right voltage to set live_status up.
So, after getting the interrupt, for a small duration, live status reg
fluctuates, and then settles down showing the correct staus.
This is explained here in, in a rough way:
HPD line ________________
|\ T1 = Monitor Hotplug causing IRQ
| \______________________________________
| |
| |
| | T2 = Live status is stable
| | _____________________________________
| | /|
Live status _____________|_|/ |
| | |
| | |
| | |
T0 T1 T2
(Between T1 and T2 Live status fluctuates or can be even low, depending on
the monitor)
After several experiments, we have concluded that a max delay
of 30ms is enough to allow the live status to settle down with
most of the monitors. This total delay of 30ms has been split into
a resolution of 3 retries of 10ms each, for the better cases.
This delay is kept at 30ms, keeping in consideration that, HDCP compliance
expect the HPD handler to respond a plug out in 100ms, by disabling port.

as hdmi which leads to issues during unplug because of the above check.

Currently we release the lane soft reset before lane stagger settings
have been programmed. I believe that means we don't actually do lane
staggering. So move the soft reset deassert to happen after lane
staggering has been programmed.
The one confusing thing in this is that when we remove the power down
override from the lanes, they power up with defaul register values,
which do not have the soft reset overrides enabled. And according to
some docs by default the data lane resets are tied to cmnreset. So that
would mean that lanes would come out of reset without staggering as
soon as the power down overrides are removed. But since we can't access
either the lane stagger register nor the soft reset override registers
until the lanes are powered on, we can't really do anything about it.
So let's just set the soft reset overrides as soon as the lane is
powered on and hope for the best.

Normmally the common lane in a PHY channel gets powered up when some
of the data lanes get powered up. But when we're driving port B with
pipe B we don't want to enabled any of the data lanes, and just want
the DPLL in the common lane to be active.
To make that happens we have to temporarily enable some data lanes
after which we can access the DPLL registers in the common lane. Once
the pipe is up and running we can drop the power override on the data
lanes allowing them to shut down. From this point forward the common
lane will in fact stay powered on until the data lanes in the other
channel get powered down.
Ville's extended explanation from the review thread:
On Wed, Aug 19, 2015 at 07:47:41AM +0530, Deepak wrote:
> One Q, why only for port B? Port C is also in same common lane right?
Port B is in the first PHY channel which also houses CL1. CL1 always
powers up whenever any lanes in either PHY channel are powered up.
CL2 only powers up if lanes in the second channel (ie. the one with
port C) powers up.
So in this scenario (pipe B->port B) we want the DPLL from CL2, but
ideally we only want to power up the lanes for port B. Powering up
port B lanes will only power up CL1, but as we need CL2 instead we
need to, temporarily, power up some lanes in port C as well.
Crossing the streams the other way (pipe A->port C) is not a problem
since CL1 powers up whenever anything else powers up. So powering up
some port C lanes is enough on its own to make the CL1 DPLL
operational, even though CL1 and the lanes live in separate channels.

Powergate the PHY lanes when they're not needed. For HDMI all four lanes
are needed always, but for DP we can enable only the needed lanes. To
power down the unused lanes we use some power down override bits in the
DISPLAY_PHY_CONTROL register. Without the overrides it appears that the
hardware always powers on all the lanes. When the port is disabled the
power down override is not needed and the lanes will shut off on their
own. That also means the override is critical to actually be able to
access the DPIO registers before the port is actually enabled.
Additionally the common lanes will power down when not needed. CL1
remains on as long as anything else is on, CL2 will shut down when
all the lanes in the same channel will shut down. There is one exception
for CL2 that will be dealt in a separate patch for clarity.
With potentially some lanes powered down, the DP code now has to check
the number of active lanes before accessing PCS/TX registers. All
registers in powered down blocks will reads as 0xffffffff, and soe we
would drown in warnings from vlv_dpio_read() if we allowed the code
to access all those registers.
Another important detail in the DP code is the "TX latency optimal"
setting. Normally the second TX lane acts as some kind of reset master,
with the other lanes as slaves. But when only a single lane is enabled,
that single lane obviously has to be the master.
A bit of extra care is needed to reconstruct the initial state of the
DISPLAY_PHY_CONTROL register since it can't be read safely. So instead
read the actual lane status from the DPLL/PHY_STATUS registers and
use that to determine which lanes ought to be powergated initially.
We also need to switch the PHY power modes to "deep PSR" to avoid
a hard system hang when powering down the single channel PHY.
Also sprinkle a few debug prints around so that we can monitor the
DISPLAY_PHY_STATUS changes without having to read it and risk
corrupting it.

CHV/BXT DPLL can't generate frequencies in the 216-240 MHz range.
Account for that when checking whether the HDMI port clock is valid.
This is particularly important for BXT since it can otherwise do
12bpc, and standard 1920x1080p60 CEA modes land right in the middle
of that range when the clock gets multiplied to account for 12bpc.
With the extra checks we will now filter out any mode where both
8bpc and 12bpc clock are within the gap. During modeset we then
pick whichever mode works, favoring 12bpc if both are possible.
12bpc isn't supported on CHV so we simply end up filtering out any
mode where the 8bpc port clock is in the gap.

For BXT gmbus is pulled from PCH to CPU. From implementation point of
view only pin pair configuration will change. The existing
implementation supports all platforms previous to GEN8 and also SKL. But
for BXT pin pair configuration is completely different than SKL or other
previous GEN's. This patch introduces the new pin pair configuration
structure specific to BXT and also ensures every real gmbus port has a
gpio pin.
v3 by Jani: with the platform independent prep work in place, the bxt
enabling reduces to a fairly trivial patch. Credits are due Sunil for
giving me the ideas (with his patches) what the platform independent
parts should look like.
v4: Fix intel_hdmi_init_connector() for bxt. Abstract gmbus_pin access

Even though we only support atomic plane updates at the moment, we still
need to add an .atomic_get_property() entrypoint for connectors before
we allow the driver to flip on the DRIVER_ATOMIC bit. As soon as that
bit gets set, the DRM core will start adding atomic connector properties
(in addition to the plane properties we care about at the moment), so we
need to be able to handle the new way the DRM core will interact with
us.
For simplicity, we just lookup driver-specific connector properties in
the usual shadow array maintained by the core. Once we get real atomic
modeset support for crtc's and planes, this code should be re-written to
pull the data out of crtc/connector state structures.

We want to enable/test plane updates via the atomic interface, but as
soon as we flip DRIVER_ATOMIC on, the DRM core will take some atomic
codepaths to lookup properties during drmModeGetConnector() and some of
those codepaths unconditionally dereference connector->state
(specifically when looking up the CRTC ID property in
drm_atomic_connector_get_property()). Create a dummy connector state
for each connector at init time to ensure the DRM core doesn't try to
dereference a NULL connector->state. The actual connector properties
will never be updated or contain useful information, but since we're
doing this specifically for testing/debug of the plane operations (and
only when a specific kernel module option is given), that shouldn't
really matter.
Once we start creating connector states, the DRM core will want to be
able to clean them up for us. We also need to hook up the destruction
entrypoint to the core's helper.
v2: Squash in the patch to set the state destruction hook (Ander & Bob)

Wrt fastboot and external screens I see a few options:

that means some pretty extensive reworking of our code which

drm/i915: Reject >165MHz modes w/ DVI monitors
the driver started to filter out display modes which exceed the
single-link DVI 165Mz dotclock limits when the monitor doesn't report
itself as being HDMI compliant. The intent was to filter out all
EDID derived modes that require dual-link DVI to operate since we
don't support dual-link.
However the patch went a bit too far and also causes the driver to reject
such modes even when specified by the user. Normally we don't check the
sink limitations when setting a mode from the user. This allows the user
to specify any mode whether the sink reports to support it or not. This
can be useful since often the sinks support more modes than they report
in the EDID.
So relax the checks a bit, and apply the single-link DVI dotclock limit
only when filtering the mode list, and ignore the limit when setting
a user specified mode.

BSpec is a bit unclear whether HDMI+HDMI cloning should work on g4x.
Tests on real hardware say that it does. Since g4x can't send
infoframes to more than one HDMI port anyway, we don't lose anything
by allow it.
For PCH platforms BSpec explicitly forbids HDMI+HDMI cloning.
Whether HDMI+HDMI cloning might also work on VLV is a bit unclear, but
since we'd at least lose the capability of sending infoframes to more
than one cloned HDMI port, it doesn't seem like a good idea to allow it.

Currently we allow encoders to indicate whether they can be part of a
cloned set with just one flag. That's not flexible enough to describe
the actual hardware capabilities. Instead make it a bitmask of encoder
types with which the current encoder can be cloned.
For now we set the bitmask to allow DVO+DVO and DVO+VGA, which should
match what the old boolean flag allowed. We will add some more cloning
options in the future.

Author: Paulo Zanoni <paulo.r.zanoni@intel.com>
Date: Thu Sep 26 20:05:59 2013 -0300
it became clear that we need to separate the unload sequence into two
parts:
1. remove all interfaces through which new operations on some object
(crtc, encoder, connector) can be started and make sure all pending
operations are completed
2. do the actual tear down of the internal representation of the above
objects
The above commit achieved this separation for connectors by splitting
out the sysfs removal part from the connector's destroy callback and
doing this removal before calling drm_mode_config_cleanup() which does
the actual tear-down of all the drm objects.
Since we'll have to customize the interface removal part for different
types of connectors in the upcoming patches, add a new unregister
callback and move the interface removal part to it.

For some reason, every single time I try to run module_reload
something tries to read the connector sysfs files. This happens
after we destroy the encoders and before we destroy the connectors, so
when the sysfs read triggers the connector detect() function,
intel_conector->encoder points to memory that was already freed.
The bad backtrace is just:
[<ffffffff8163ca9a>] dump_stack+0x54/0x74
[<ffffffffa00c2c8e>] intel_dp_detect+0x1e/0x4b0 [i915]

[<ffffffff811aba4c>] SyS_read+0x4c/0xa0
[<ffffffff8164e392>] system_call_fastpath+0x16/0x1b
But if you add tons of memory checking debug options to your Kernel
you'll also see:
- general protection fault: 0000
- BUG kmalloc-4096 (Tainted: G D W ): Poison overwritten
- INFO: Allocated in intel_ddi_init+0x65/0x270 [i915]
- INFO: Freed in intel_dp_encoder_destroy+0x69/0xb0 [i915]
Among a bunch of other error messages.
So this commit just destroys the sysfs files before both the encoder
and connectors are freed.

struct drm_mode_display now has a separate crtc_ version of the clock to
be used when we're talking about the timings given to the harwadre (was
far as the mode is concerned).
This commit is really the result of a git grep adjusted_mode.*clock and
replacing those by adjusted_mode.crtc_clock. No functional change.

The pixel clock should come from adjusted_mode not requested_mode.
In this case the two should be the same as we don't currently
overwrite the clock in the case of HDMI. But let's make the code
safe against such things happening in the future.

Now that adjusted_mode.clock no longer contains the pixel_multiplier, we
can kill the get_clock() callback and instead do the clock readout
in get_pipe_config().
Also i9xx_crtc_clock_get() can now extract the frequency of the PCH
DPLL, so use it to populate port_clock accurately for PCH encoders.
For DP in port A the encoder is still responsible for filling in
port_clock. The FDI adjusted_mode.clock extraction is kept in place
for some extra sanity checking, but we no longer need to pretend it's
also the port_clock.
In the encoder get_config() functions fill out adjusted_mode.clock
based on port_clock and other details such as the DP M/N values,
HDMI 12bpc and SDVO pixel_multiplier. For PCH encoders we will then
do an extra sanity check to make sure the dotclock we derived from
the FDI configuratiuon matches the one we derive from port_clock.
DVO doesn't exist on PCH platforms, so it doesn't need to anything
but assign adjusted_mode.clock=port_clock. And DDI is HSW only, so
none of the changes apply there.
v2: Use hdmi_reg color format to detect 12bpc HDMI case
v3: Set adjusted_mode.clock for LVDS too
v4: Rename ironlake_crtc_clock_get to ironlake_pch_clock_get,
eliminate the useless link_freq variable.

- Massive amount of wm patches from Ville for ilk, snb, ivb, hsw, this is
prep work to eventually get things going for nuclear pageflips where we
need to adjust watermarks on the fly.
- More vm/vma patches from Ben. This refactoring isn't yet fully rolled
out, we miss the execbuf conversion and some of the low-level
bind/unbind support code.
- Convert our hdmi infoframe code to use the new common helper functions
(Damien). This contains some bugfixes for the common infoframe helpers.
- Some cruft removal from Damien.

set_frame() wraps the write_frame() vfunc. Be consistent and name the
wrapping function like the vfunc being called.
It's doubly confusing as we also have a set_infoframes() vfunc and
set_infoframe() doesn't wrap it.
