The current LLVM and Clang build procedure in samples/bpf/README.rst is

The LLVM community has adopted new ways to build the compiler. There are
different ways to build LLVM and Clang, the Clang Getting Started page [1]
has one way. As Yonghong said, it is better to copy the build procedure
in Documentation/bpf/bpf_devel_QA.rst to keep consistent.
I verified the procedure and it is proved to be feasible, so we should
update README.rst to reflect the reality. At the same time, update the
related comment in Makefile.
Additionally, as Fangrui said, the dir llvm-project/llvm/build/install is
not used, BUILD_SHARED_LIBS=OFF is the default option [2], so also change
Documentation/bpf/bpf_devel_QA.rst together.
At last, we recommend that developers who want the fastest incremental
builds use the Ninja build system [1], you can find it in your system's
package manager, usually the package is ninja or ninja-build [3], so add
ninja to build dependencies suggested by Nathan.

Brendan Jackman added extend atomic operations to the BPF instruction
set in commit 7064a7341a ("Merge branch 'Atomics for eBPF'"), which
introduces the BPF_ATOMIC_OP macro. However, that macro was missing
for the BPF samples. Fix that by adding it into bpf_insn.h.

A subsequent patch will add additional atomic operations. These new
operations will use the same opcode field as the existing XADD, with
the immediate discriminating different operations.
In preparation, rename the instruction mode BPF_ATOMIC and start
calling the zero immediate BPF_ADD.
This is possible (doesn't break existing valid BPF progs) because the
immediate field is currently reserved MBZ and BPF_ADD is zero.
All uses are removed from the tree but the BPF_XADD definition is
kept around to avoid breaking builds for people including kernel
headers.

Fix a possible hang in xdpsock that can occur when using multiple
threads. In this case, one or more of the threads might get stuck in
the while-loop in tx_only after the user has signaled the main thread
to stop execution. In this case, no more Tx packets will be sent, so a
thread might get stuck in the aforementioned while-loop. Fix this by
introducing a test inside the while-loop to check if the benchmark has
been terminated. If so, return from the function.

Introduce a sample program to demonstrate the control and data
plane split. For the control plane part a new program called
xdpsock_ctrl_proc is introduced. For the data plane part, some code
was added to xdpsock_user.c to act as the data plane entity.
Application xdpsock_ctrl_proc works as control entity with sudo
privileges (CAP_SYS_ADMIN and CAP_NET_ADMIN are sufficient) and the
extended xdpsock as data plane entity with CAP_NET_RAW capability
only.
Usage example:
sudo ./samples/bpf/xdpsock_ctrl_proc -i <interface>
sudo ./samples/bpf/xdpsock -i <interface> -q <queue_id>
-n <interval> -N -l -R

Numerous refactoring that rewrites BPF programs written with bpf_load
to use the libbpf loader was finally completed, resulting in BPF
programs using bpf_load within the kernel being completely no longer
present.
This commit removes bpf_load, an outdated bpf loader that is difficult
to keep up with the latest kernel BPF and causes confusion.
Also, this commit removes the unused trace_helper and bpf_load from
samples/bpf target objects from Makefile.

Currently, lwt_len_hist's map lwt_len_hist_map is uses pinning, and the
map isn't cleared on test end. This leds to reuse of that map for
each test, which prevents the results of the test from being accurate.
This commit fixes the problem by removing of pinned map from bpffs.
Also, this commit add the executable permission to shell script
files.

This commit refactors the existing program with libbpf bpf loader.
Since the kprobe, tracepoint and raw_tracepoint bpf program can be
attached with single bpf_program__attach() interface, so the
corresponding function of libbpf is used here.
Rather than specifying the number of cpus inside the code, this commit
uses the number of available cpus with _SC_NPROCESSORS_ONLN.

This commit refactors the existing ibumad program with libbpf bpf
loader. Attach/detach of Tracepoint bpf programs has been managed
with the generic bpf_program__attach() and bpf_link__destroy() from
the libbpf.
Also, instead of using the previous BPF MAP definition, this commit
refactors ibumad MAP definition with the new BTF-defined MAP format.
To verify that this bpf program works without an infiniband device,
try loading ib_umad kernel module and test the program as follows:
# modprobe ib_umad
# ./ibumad
Moreover, TRACE_HELPERS has been removed from the Makefile since it is
not used on this program.

This commit refactors the existing kprobe program with libbpf bpf
loader. To attach bpf program, this uses generic bpf_program__attach()
approach rather than using bpf_load's load_bpf_file().
To attach bpf to perf_event, instead of using previous ioctl method,
this commit uses bpf_program__attach_perf_event since it manages the
enable of perf_event and attach of BPF programs to it, which is much
more intuitive way to achieve.
Also, explicit close(fd) has been removed since event will be closed
inside bpf_link__destroy() automatically.
Furthermore, to prevent conflict of same named uprobe events, O_TRUNC
flag has been used to clear 'uprobe_events' interface.

This commit refactors the existing cgroup program with libbpf bpf
loader. The original test_cgrp2_sock2 has keeped the bpf program
attached to the cgroup hierarchy even after the exit of user program.
To implement the same functionality with libbpf, this commit uses the
BPF_LINK_PINNING to pin the link attachment even after it is closed.
Since this uses LINK instead of ATTACH, detach of bpf program from
cgroup with 'test_cgrp2_sock' is not used anymore.
The code to mount the bpf was added to the .sh file in case the bpff
was not mounted on /sys/fs/bpf. Additionally, to fix the problem that
shell script cannot find the binary object from the current path,
relative path './' has been added in front of binary.

This commit refactors the existing cgroup programs with libbpf
bpf loader. Since bpf_program__attach doesn't support cgroup program
attachment, this explicitly attaches cgroup bpf program with
bpf_program__attach_cgroup(bpf_prog, cg1).
Also, to change attach_type of bpf program, this uses libbpf's
bpf_program__set_expected_attach_type helper to switch EGRESS to
INGRESS. To keep bpf program attached to the cgroup hierarchy even
after the exit, this commit uses the BPF_LINK_PINNING to pin the link
attachment even after it is closed.
Besides, this program was broken due to the typo of BPF MAP definition.
But this commit solves the problem by fixing this from 'queue_stats' map
struct hvm_queue_stats -> hbm_queue_stats.

Increment the statistics over how many Tx packets have been sent at
the time of sending instead of at the time of completion. This as a
completion event means that the buffer has been sent AND returned to
user space. The packet always gets sent shortly after sendto() is
called. The kernel might, for performance reasons, decide to not
return every single buffer to user space immediately after sending,
for example, only after a batch of packets have been
transmitted. Incrementing the number of packets sent at completion,
will in that case be confusing as if you send a single packet, the
counter might show zero for a while even though the packet has been
transmitted.

The memlock rlimit is a notorious source of failure for BPF programs. Most
of the samples just set it to infinity, but a few used a lower limit. The
problem with unconditionally setting a lower limit is that this will also
override the limit if the system-wide setting is *higher* than the limit
being set, which can lead to failures on systems that lock a lot of memory,
but set 'ulimit -l' to unlimited before running a sample.
One fix for this is to only conditionally set the limit if the current
limit is lower, but it is simpler to just unify all the samples and have
them all set the limit to infinity.

The issue got triggered given Yaniv was compiling tracing programs with native
target (e.g. x86) instead of BPF target, hence no BTF generated vmlinux.h nor
CO-RE used, and later llc with -march=bpf was invoked to compile from LLVM IR
to BPF object file. Given that clang was expecting x86 inline asm and not BPF
one the error complained that these regs don't exist on the former.
Guard bpf_tail_call_static() with defined(__bpf__) where BPF inline asm is valid
to use. BPF tracing programs on more modern kernels use BPF target anyway and
thus the bpf_tail_call_static() function will be available for them. BPF inline
asm is supported since clang 7 (clang <= 6 otherwise throws same above error),
and __bpf_unreachable() since clang 8, therefore include the latter condition
in order to prevent compilation errors for older clang versions. Given even an
old Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has official LLVM packages all the way up to llvm-10, I did
not bother to special case the __bpf_unreachable() inside bpf_tail_call_static()
further.
Also, undo the sockex3_kern's use of bpf_tail_call_static() sample given they
still have the old hacky way to even compile networking progs with native instead
of BPF target so bpf_tail_call_static() won't be defined there anymore.

Most of the samples were converted to use the new BTF-defined MAP as
they moved to libbpf, but some of the samples were missing.
Instead of using the previous BPF MAP definition, this commit refactors
xdp_monitor and xdp_sample_pkts_kern MAP definition with the new
BTF-defined MAP format.
Also, this commit removes the max_entries attribute at PERF_EVENT_ARRAY
map type. The libbpf's bpf_object__create_map() will automatically
set max_entries to the maximum configured number of CPUs on the host.

with __attach() instead of explicitly calling __attach_<type>().
This commit refactors the __attach_tracepoint() with libbpf's generic

the map FD to simplify the code. Also, the missing removal of
bpf_load.o in Makefile has been fixed.

To avoid confusion caused by the increasing fragmentation of the BPF
Loader program, this commit would like to change to the libbpf loader
instead of using the bpf_load.
Thanks to libbpf's bpf_link interface, managing the tracepoint BPF
program is much easier. bpf_program__attach_tracepoint manages the
enable of tracepoint event and attach of BPF programs to it with a
single interface bpf_link, so there is no need to manage event_fd and
prog_fd separately.
This commit refactors xdp_monitor with using this libbpf API, and the
bpf_load is removed and migrated to libbpf.

Add an option to count the number of interrupts generated per second and
total number of interrupts during the lifetime of the application for a
given interface. This information is extracted from /proc/interrupts. Since
there is no naming convention across drivers, the user must provide the
string which is specific to their interface in the /proc/interrupts file on
the command line.
Usage:

The reason is due to llvm change https://reviews.llvm.org/D87153
where the CORE relocation global generation is moved from the beginning
of target dependent optimization (llc) to the beginning
of target independent optimization (opt).
Since samples/bpf programs did not use vmlinux.h and its clang compilation
uses native architecture, we need to adjust arch triple at opt level
to do CORE relocation global generation properly. Otherwise, the above
error will appear.
This patch fixed the issue by introduce opt and llvm-dis to compilation chain,
which will do proper CORE relocation global generation as well as O2 level
optimization. Tested with llvm10, llvm11 and trunk/llvm12.

Add a quiet option (-Q) that disables the statistics print outs of
xdpsock. This is good to have when measuring 0% loss rate performance
as it will be quite terrible if the application uses printfs.

Fix a possible deadlock in the l2fwd application in xdpsock that can
occur when there is no space in the Tx ring. There are two ways to get
the kernel to consume entries in the Tx ring: calling sendto() to make
it send packets and freeing entries from the completion ring, as the
kernel will not send a packet if there is no space for it to add a
completion entry in the completion ring. The Tx loop in l2fwd only
used to call sendto(). This patches adds cleaning the completion ring
in that loop.

Fix the sending of a single packet (or small burst) in xdpsock when
executing in copy mode. Currently, the l2fwd application in xdpsock
only transmits the packets after a batch of them has been received,
which might be confusing if you only send one packet and expect that
it is returned pronto. Fix this by calling sendto() more often and add
a comment in the code that states that this can be optimized if
needed.

From commit 5210958420 ("libbpf: Deprecate notion of BPF program
"title" in favor of "section name""), the term title has been replaced
with section name in libbpf.
Since the bpf_program__title() has been deprecated, this commit
switches this function to bpf_program__section_name(). Due to
this commit, the compilation warning issue has also been resolved.

The txpush program in the xdpsock sample application is supposed
to send out all packets in the umem in a round-robin fashion.
The problem is that it only cycled through the first BATCH_SIZE
worth of packets. Fixed this so that it cycles through all buffers
in the umem as intended.

Optimize the throughput performance of the l2fwd sub-app in the
xdpsock sample application by removing a duplicate syscall and
increasing the size of the fill ring.
The latter needs some further explanation. We recommend that you set
the fill ring size >= HW RX ring size + AF_XDP RX ring size. Make sure
you fill up the fill ring with buffers at regular intervals, and you
will with this setting avoid allocation failures in the driver. These
are usually quite expensive since drivers have not been written to
assume that allocation failures are common. For regular sockets,
kernel allocated memory is used that only runs out in OOM situations
that should be rare.
These two performance optimizations together lead to a 6% percent
improvement for the l2fwd app on my machine.

This sample code illustrates the packet forwarding between multiple
AF_XDP sockets in multi-threading environment. All the threads and
sockets are sharing a common buffer pool, with each socket having
its own private buffer cache. The sockets are created with the
xsk_socket__create_shared() function, which allows multiple AF_XDP
sockets to share the same UMEM object.
Example 1: Single thread handling two sockets. Packets received
from socket A (on top of interface IFA, queue QA) are forwarded
to socket B (on top of interface IFB, queue QB) and vice-versa.
The thread is affinitized to CPU core C:
./xsk_fwd -i IFA -q QA -i IFB -q QB -c C
Example 2: Two threads, each handling two sockets. Packets from
socket A are sent to socket B (by thread X), packets
from socket B are sent to socket A (by thread X); packets from
socket C are sent to socket D (by thread Y), packets from socket
D are sent to socket C (by thread Y). The two threads are bound
to CPU cores CX and CY:

>From commit f1394b7988 ("block: mark blk_account_io_completion
static") symbol blk_account_io_completion() has been marked as static,
which makes it no longer possible to attach kprobe to this event.
Currently, there are broken samples due to this reason.
As a solution to this, attach kprobe events to blk_account_io_done()
to modify them to perform the same behavior as before.

Extend xdp_redirect_cpu_{usr,kern}.c adding the possibility to load
a XDP program on cpumap entries. The following options have been added:
- mprog-name: cpumap entry program name
- mprog-filename: cpumap entry program filename
- redirect-device: output interface if the cpumap program performs a
XDP_REDIRECT to an egress interface
- redirect-map: bpf map used to perform XDP_REDIRECT to an egress
interface
- mprog-disable: disable loading XDP program on cpumap entries

Introduce the --extra-stats (or simply -x) flag to the xdpsock application
which prints additional statistics alongside the regular rx and tx
counters. The new statistics printed report error conditions eg. rx ring
full, invalid descriptors, etc.

Previously, in order to set the numa_node attribute at the time of map
creation using "libbpf", it was necessary to call bpf_create_map_node()
directly (bpf_load approach), instead of calling bpf_object_load()
that handles everything on its own, including map creation. And because
of this problem, this sample had problems with refactoring from bpf_load
to libbbpf.
However, by commit 1bdb6c9a1c ("libbpf: Add a bunch of attribute
getters/setters for map definitions") added the numa_node attribute and
allowed it to be set in the map.
By using libbpf instead of bpf_load, the inner map definition has
been explicitly declared with BTF-defined format. Also, the element of
ARRAY_OF_MAPS was also statically specified using the BTF format. And
for this reason some logic in fixup_map() was not needed and changed
or removed.

support"), a way to define internal map in BTF-defined map has been
added.
Instead of using previous 'inner_map_idx' definition, the structure to
be used for the inner map can be directly defined using array directive.

defining inner map with BTF-defined format.

Currently, BPF programs with kprobe/sys_connect does not work properly.
Commit 34745aed51 ("samples/bpf: fix kprobe attachment issue on x64")
This commit modifies the bpf_load behavior of kprobe events in the x64
architecture. If the current kprobe event target starts with "sys_*",
add the prefix "__x64_" to the front of the event.
Appending "__x64_" prefix with kprobe/sys_* event was appropriate as a
solution to most of the problems caused by the commit below.

However, there is a problem with the sys_connect kprobe event that does

As the assembly code for __x64_sys_connect shows, parameters should be
fetched and set into rdi, rsi, rdx registers prior to calling
__sys_connect.
Because of this problem, this commit fixes the sys_connect event by
first getting the value of the rdi register and then the value of the
rdi, rsi, and rdx register through an offset based on that value.

Memset on the pointer right after malloc can cause a NULL pointer
deference if it failed to allocate memory. A simple fix is to
replace malloc()/memset() pair with a simple call to calloc().

BPF tail call uses the BPF_MAP_TYPE_PROG_ARRAY type map for calling
into other BPF programs and this PROG_ARRAY should be filled prior to
use. Currently, samples with the PROG_ARRAY type MAP fill this program
array with bpf_load. For bpf_load to fill this map, kernel BPF program
must specify the section with specific format of <prog_type>/<array_idx>
(e.g. SEC("socket/0"))
But by using libbpf instead of bpf_load, user program can specify which
programs should be added to PROG_ARRAY. The advantage of this approach
is that you can selectively add only the programs you want, rather than
adding all of them to PROG_ARRAY, and it's much more intuitive than the
traditional approach.
This commit refactors user programs with the PROG_ARRAY type MAP with
libbpf instead of using bpf_load.

Currently, the kprobe BPF program attachment method for bpf_load is
quite old. The implementation of bpf_load "directly" controls and
manages(create, delete) the kprobe events of DEBUGFS. On the other hand,
using using the libbpf automatically manages the kprobe event.
(under bpf_link interface)
By calling bpf_program__attach(_kprobe) in libbpf, the corresponding
kprobe is created and the BPF program will be attached to this kprobe.
To remove this, by simply invoking bpf_link__destroy will clean up the
event.
This commit refactors kprobe tracing programs (tracex{1~7}_user.c) with
libbpf using bpf_link interface and bpf_program__attach.
tracex2_kern.c, which tracks system calls (sys_*), has been modified to
append prefix depending on architecture.

Current method of checking pointer error is not user friendly.
Especially the __must_check define makes this less intuitive.
Since, libbpf has an API libbpf_get_error() which checks pointer error,
this commit refactors existing pointer error check logic with libbpf.

xdp_redirect_cpu is currently failing in bpf_prog_load_xattr()
allocating cpu_map map if CONFIG_NR_CPUS is less than 64 since
cpu_map_alloc() requires max_entries to be less than NR_CPUS.
Set cpu_map max_entries according to NR_CPUS in xdp_redirect_cpu_kern.c
and get currently running cpus in xdp_redirect_cpu_user.c

One fixes up the SPDX tag for a single driver, while the other two go
through the tree and add SPDX tags for all of the .gitignore files as
needed.
Nothing too complex, but you will get a merge conflict with your current
tree, that should be trivial to handle (one file modified by two things,
one file deleted.)
All 3 of these have been in linux-next for a while, with no reported
issues other than the merge conflict.

The bpf_program__attach of libbpf(using bpf_link) is much more intuitive
than the previous method using ioctl.
bpf_program__attach_perf_event manages the enable of perf_event and
attach of BPF programs to it, so there's no neeed to do this
directly with ioctl.
In addition, bpf_link provides consistency in the use of API because it
allows disable (detach, destroy) for multiple events to be treated as
one bpf_link__destroy. Also, bpf_link__destroy manages the close() of
perf_event fd.
This commit refactors samples that attach the bpf program to perf_event
by using libbbpf instead of ioctl. Also the bpf_load in the samples were
removed and migrated to use libbbpf API.

To reduce the reliance of trace samples (trace*_user) on bpf_load,
move read_trace_pipe to trace_helpers. By moving this bpf_loader helper
elsewhere, trace functions can be easily migrated to libbbpf.

ndo_xsk_wakeup() can return -ENETDOWN and there's no particular reason
to bail the whole application out on that case. Let's check in kick_tx()

Seems that by accident there is a doubled declaration of global variable
opt_xdp_bind_flags in xdpsock_user.c. The second one is uninitialized so
compiler was simply ignoring it.

In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host
programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004.
It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to
selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration.
This commit renames like follows:
always -> always-y
hostprogs-y -> hostprogs
So, scripts/Makefile will look like this:
always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ...
always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ...
...
hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m)
I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host
program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify
which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier.
The "always", "hostprogs-y", "hostprogs-m" will be kept for backward
compatibility for a while.

Fix all files in samples/bpf to include libbpf header files with the bpf/
prefix, to be consistent with external users of the library. Also ensure
that all includes of exported libbpf header files (those that are exported
on 'make install' of the library) use bracketed includes instead of quoted.
To make sure no new files are introduced that doesn't include the bpf/
prefix in its include, remove tools/lib/bpf from the include path entirely,
and use tools/lib instead.

The 'clean' rule in the samples/bpf Makefile tries to remove backup
files (ending in ~). However, if no such files exist, it will instead try
to remove the user's home directory. While the attempt is mostly harmless,
it does lead to a somewhat scary warning like this:
rm: cannot remove '~': Is a directory
Fix this by using find instead of shell expansion to locate any actual
backup files that need to be removed.

Now that we don't have a reference to a devmap when flushing the device
bulk queue, let's change the the devmap_xmit tracepoint to remote the
map_id and map_index fields entirely. Rearrange the fields so 'drops' and
'sent' stay in the same position in the tracepoint struct, to make it
possible for the xdp_monitor utility to read both the old and the new
format.

When sample xdp_redirect_cpu was converted to use libbpf, the
tracepoints used by this sample were not getting attached automatically
like with bpf_load.c. The BPF-maps was still getting loaded, thus
nobody notice that the tracepoints were not updating these maps.
This fix doesn't use the new skeleton code, as this bug was introduced
in v5.1 and stable might want to backport this. E.g. Red Hat QA uses
this sample as part of their testing.

The UDP payload fill pattern can be specified using '-P' or '--tx-pkt-pattern'
option. It is an unsigned 32 bit field and defaulted to 0x12345678.
The IP and UDP checksum is calculated by the code as per the content of
the packet before transmission.

New option '-s' or '--tx-pkt-size' has been added to specify the transmit
packet size. The packet size ranges from 47 to 4096 bytes. When this
option is not provided, it defaults to 64 byte packet.
The code uses struct ethhdr, struct iphdr and struct udphdr to form the
transmit packet. The MAC address, IP address and UDP ports are set to default
values.
The code calculates IP and UDP checksums before sending the packet.
Checksum calculation code in Linux kernel is used for this purpose.
The Ethernet FCS is not filled by the code.

When attaching XDP programs, userspace can set flags to request the attach
mode (generic/SKB mode, driver mode or hw offloaded mode). If no such flags
are requested, the kernel will attempt to attach in driver mode, and then
silently fall back to SKB mode if this fails.
The silent fallback is a major source of user confusion, as users will try
to load a program on a device without XDP support, and instead of an error
they will get the silent fallback behaviour, not notice, and then wonder
why performance is not what they were expecting.
In an attempt to combat this, let's switch all the samples to default to
explicitly requesting driver-mode attach. As part of this, ensure that all
the userspace utilities have a switch to enable SKB mode. For those that
have a switch to request driver mode, keep it but turn it into a no-op.

It seems Clang can in some cases turn on stack protection by default, which
doesn't work with BPF. This was reported once before[0], but it seems the
flag to explicitly turn off the stack protector wasn't added to the
Makefile, so do that now.
The symptom of this is compile errors like the following:

Currently, open() is called from the user program and it calls the syscall
'sys_openat', not the 'sys_open'. This leads to an error of the program
of user side, due to the fact that the counter maps are zero since no
function such 'sys_open' is called.
This commit adds the kernel bpf program which are attached to the
tracepoint 'sys_enter_openat' and 'sys_enter_openat'.

Previously, when this sample is added, commit 1c47910ef8
("samples/bpf: add perf_event+bpf example"), a symbol 'sys_read' and
'sys_write' has been used without no prefixes. But currently there are
no exact symbols with these under kallsyms and this leads to failure.
This commit changes exact compare to substring compare to keep compatible
with exact symbol or prefixed symbol.

In the days of using bpf_load.c the order in which the 'maps' sections
were defines in BPF side (*_kern.c) file, were used by userspace side
to identify the map via using the map order as an index. In effect the
order-index is created based on the order the maps sections are stored
in the ELF-object file, by the LLVM compiler.
This have also carried over in libbpf via API bpf_map__next(NULL, obj)
to extract maps in the order libbpf parsed the ELF-object file.
When BTF based maps were introduced a new section type ".maps" were
created. I found that the LLVM compiler doesn't create the ".maps"
sections in the order they are defined in the C-file. The order in the
ELF file is based on the order the map pointer is referenced in the code.
This combination of changes lead to xdp_rxq_info mixing up the map
file-descriptors in userspace, resulting in very broken behaviour, but
without warning the user.
This patch fix issue by instead using bpf_object__find_map_by_name()
to find maps via their names. (Note, this is the ELF name, which can
be longer than the name the kernel retains).

The main changes are:
1) Addition of BPF trampoline which works as a bridge between kernel functions,
BPF programs and other BPF programs along with two new use cases: i) fentry/fexit
BPF programs for tracing with practically zero overhead to call into BPF (as
opposed to k[ret]probes) and ii) attachment of the former to networking related
programs to see input/output of networking programs (covering xdpdump use case),
from Alexei Starovoitov.
2) BPF array map mmap support and use in libbpf for global data maps; also a big

Side effect of some kbuild changes resulted in breaking the

This patch change the samples/bpf/Makefile to work again, when

Add support for the XDP_SHARED_UMEM mode to the xdpsock sample
application. As libbpf does not have a built in XDP program for this
mode, we use an explicitly loaded XDP program. This also serves as an
example on how to write your own XDP program that can route to an
AF_XDP socket.

Since, the new syntax of BTF-defined map has been introduced,
the syntax for using maps under samples directory are mixed up.
For example, some are already using the new syntax, and some are using
existing syntax by calling them as 'legacy'.
As stated at commit abd29c9314 ("libbpf: allow specifying map
definitions using BTF"), the BTF-defined map has more compatablility
with extending supported map definition features.
The commit doesn't replace all of the map to new BTF-defined map,
because some of the samples still use bpf_load instead of libbpf, which
can't properly create BTF-defined map.
This will only updates the samples which uses libbpf API for loading bpf
program. (ex. bpf_prog_load_xattr)

Currently, under samples, several methods are being used to load bpf
program.
Since using libbpf is preferred solution, lots of previously used
'load_bpf_file' from bpf_load are replaced with 'bpf_prog_load_xattr'
from libbpf.
But some of the error messages still show up as 'load_bpf_file' instead
of 'bpf_prog_load_xattr'.
This commit fixes outdated errror messages under samples and fixes some
code style issues.

Basically it only enables that was added by previous couple fixes.
Sysroot contains correct libs installed and its headers. Useful when
working with NFC or virtual machine.

While compiling natively, the host's cflags and ldflags are equal to
ones used from HOSTCFLAGS and HOSTLDFLAGS. When cross compiling it
should have own, used for target arch. While verification, for arm,
arm64 and x86_64 the following flags were used always:
-Wall -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer
-Wmissing-prototypes
-Wstrict-prototypes
So, add them as they were verified and used before adding
Makefile.target and lets omit "-fomit-frame-pointer" as were proposed
while review, as no sense in such optimization for samples.

The main reason for that - HOSTCC and CC have different aims.
HOSTCC is used to build programs running on host, that can
cross-comple target programs with CC. It was tested for arm and arm64
cross compilation, based on linaro toolchain, but should work for
others.
So, in order to split cross compilation (CC) with host build (HOSTCC),
lets base samples on Makefile.target. It allows to cross-compile
samples/bpf programs with CC while auxialry tools running on host
built with HOSTCC.

The Makefile.target is added only and will be used in
sample/bpf/Makefile later in order to switch cross-compiling to CC
from HOSTCC environment.
The HOSTCC is supposed to build binaries and tools running on the host
afterwards, in order to simplify build or so, like "fixdep" or else.
In case of cross compiling "fixdep" is executed on host when the rest
samples should run on target arch. In order to build binaries for
target arch with CC and tools running on host with HOSTCC, lets add
Makefile.target for simplicity, having definition and routines similar
to ones, used in script/Makefile.host. This allows later add
cross-compilation to samples/bpf with minimum changes.
The tprog stands for target programs built with CC.
Makefile.target contains only stuff needed for samples/bpf, potentially
can be reused later and now needed only for unblocking tricky
samples/bpf cross compilation.

For arm, -D__LINUX_ARM_ARCH__=X is min version used as instruction
set selector and is absolutely required while parsing some parts of
headers. It's present in KBUILD_CFLAGS but not in autoconf.h, so let's
retrieve it from and add to programs cflags. In another case errors
like "SMP is not supported" for armv7 and bunch of other errors are
issued resulting to incorrect final object.

Don't list userspace "cookie_uid_helper_example" object in list for
bpf objects.
'always' target is used for listing bpf programs, but
'cookie_uid_helper_example.o' is a user space ELF file, and covered
by rule `per_socket_stats_example`, so shouldn't be in 'always'.
Let us remove `always += cookie_uid_helper_example.o`, which avoids
breaking cross compilation due to mismatched includes.

bpf_helper_defs.h generation into libbpf's Makefile. Ensure all those

Split off few legacy things from bpf_helpers.h into separate
bpf_legacy.h file:
- load_{byte|half|word};
- remove extra inner_idx and numa_node fields from bpf_map_def and
introduce bpf_map_def_legacy for use in samples;
- move BPF_ANNOTATE_KV_PAIR into bpf_legacy.h.
Adjust samples and selftests accordingly by either including
bpf_legacy.h and using bpf_map_def_legacy, or switching to BTF-defined
maps altogether.

Currently, at xdp_adjust_tail_kern.c, MAX_PCKT_SIZE is limited
to 600. To make this size flexible, static global variable
'max_pcktsz' is added.
By updating new packet size from the user space, xdp_adjust_tail_kern.o
will use this value as a new max packet size.
This static global variable can be accesible from .data section with
bpf_object__find_map* from user space, since it is considered as
internal map (accessible with .bss/.data/.rodata suffix).
If no '-P <MAX_PCKT_SIZE>' option is used, the size of maximum packet
will be 600 as a default.
For clarity, change the helper to fetch map from 'bpf_map__next'
to 'bpf_object__find_map_fd_by_name'. Also, changed the way to
test prog_fd, map_fd from '!= 0' to '< 0', since fd could be 0
when stdin is closed.

This patch modifies xdpsock to use mmap instead of posix_memalign. With
this change, we can use hugepages when running the application in unaligned
chunks mode. Using hugepages makes it more likely that we have physically
contiguous memory, which supports the unaligned chunk mode better.

This patch adds buffer recycling support for unaligned buffers. Since we
don't mask the addr to 2k at umem_reg in unaligned mode, we need to make
sure we give back the correct (original) addr to the fill queue. We achieve
this using the new descriptor format and associated masks. The new format
uses the upper 16-bits for the offset and the lower 48-bits for the addr.
Since we have a field for the offset, we no longer need to modify the
actual address. As such, all we have to do to get back the original address
is mask for the lower 48 bits (i.e. strip the offset and we get the address
on it's own).

This patch adds support for the unaligned chunks mode. The addition of the
unaligned chunks option will allow users to run the application with more
relaxed chunk placement in the XDP umem.
Unaligned chunks mode can be used with the '-u' or '--unaligned' command
line options.

For arm32 xdp sockets mmap2 is preferred, so use it if it's defined.
Declaration of __NR_mmap can be skipped and it breaks build.

This commit adds using the need_wakeup flag to the xdpsock sample
application. It is turned on by default as we think it is a feature
that seems to always produce a performance benefit, if the application
has been written taking advantage of it. It can be turned off in the
sample app by using the '-m' command line option.
The txpush and l2fwd sub applications have also been updated to
support poll() with multiple sockets.

Make it clear that this XDP program depend on the network
stack to do the ARP resolution. This is connected with the
BPF_FIB_LKUP_RET_NO_NEIGH return code from bpf_fib_lookup().
Another common mistake (seen via XDP-tutorial) is that users
don't realize that sysctl net.ipv{4,6}.conf.all.forwarding
setting is honored by bpf_fib_lookup.

This address the TODO in samples/bpf/xdp_fwd_kern.c, which points out
that the chosen egress index should be checked for existence in the
devmap. This can now be done via taking advantage of Toke's work in
commit 0cdbb4b09a ("devmap: Allow map lookups from eBPF").
This change makes xdp_fwd more practically usable, as this allows for
a mixed environment, where IP-forwarding fallback to network stack, if
the egress device isn't configured to use XDP.

The devmap name 'tx_port' came from a copy-paste from xdp_redirect_map
which only have a single TX port. Change name to xdp_tx_ports
to make it more descriptive.

While $ARCH can be relatively flexible (see Makefile and
tools/scripts/Makefile.arch), $SRCARCH always corresponds to a directory
name under arch/.
Therefore, build samples with -D__TARGET_ARCH_$(SRCARCH), since that
matches the expectations of bpf_helpers.h.

Adds support for fq's Earliest Departure Time to HBM (Host Bandwidth
Manager). Includes a new BPF program supporting EDT, and also updates
corresponding programs.
It will drop packets with an EDT of more than 500us in the future
unless the packet belongs to a flow with less than 2 packets in flight.
This is done so each flow has at least 2 packets in flight, so they
will not starve, and also to help prevent delayed ACK timeouts.
It will also work with ECN enabled traffic, where the packets will be
CE marked if their EDT is more than 50us in the future.
The table below shows some performance numbers. The flows are back to
back RPCS. One server sending to another, either 2 or 4 flows.
One flow is a 10KB RPC, the rest are 1MB RPCs. When there are more
than one flow of a given RPC size, the numbers represent averages.
The rate limit applies to all flows (they are in the same cgroup).
Tests ending with "-edt" ran with the new BPF program supporting EDT.
Tests ending with "-hbt" ran on top HBT qdisc with the specified rate
(i.e. no HBM). The other tests ran with the HBM BPF program included
in the HBM patch-set.
EDT has limited value when using DCTCP, but it helps in many cases when
using Cubic. It usually achieves larger link utilization and lower
99% latencies for the 1MB RPCs.
HBM ends up queueing a lot of packets with its default parameter values,
reducing the goodput of the 10KB RPCs and increasing their latency. Also,
the RTTs seen by the flows are quite large.

The typical XDP memory scheme is one packet per page. Change the AF_XDP
frame size in libbpf to 4096, which is the page size on x86, to allow
libbpf to be used with the drivers with the packet-per-page scheme.
Add a command line option -f to xdpsock to allow to specify a custom
frame size.

Currently, each xdp samples are inconsistent in the use.
Most of the samples fetch the interface with it's name.
(ex. xdp1, xdp2skb, xdp_redirect_cpu, xdp_sample_pkts, etc.)
But some of the xdp samples are fetching the interface with
ifindex by command argument.
This commit enables xdp samples to fetch interface with it's name
without changing the original index interface fetching.
(<ifname|ifindex> fetching in the same way as xdp_sample_pkts_user.c does.)

When we terminate xdp_redirect, it ends up with following message:
"Program on iface OUT changed, not removing"
This results in dummy prog still attached to OUT interface.
It is because signal handler checks if the programs are the same that
we had attached. But while fetching dummy_prog_id, current code uses
prog_fd instead of dummy_prog_fd. This patch passes the correct fd.

Another round of SPDX updates for 5.2-rc6
Here is what I am guessing is going to be the last "big" SPDX update for
5.2. It contains all of the remaining GPLv2 and GPLv2+ updates that
were "easy" to determine by pattern matching. The ones after this are
going to be a bit more difficult and the people on the spdx list will be
discussing them on a case-by-case basis now.
Another 5000+ files are fixed up, so our overall totals are:
Files checked: 64545
Files with SPDX: 45529
Compared to the 5.1 kernel which was:
Files checked: 63848
Files with SPDX: 22576
This is a huge improvement.
Also, we deleted another 20000 lines of boilerplate license crud, always
nice to see in a diffstat.
