We're starting to add many IS_HASWELL checks for the power well code,
so add a HAS_POWER_WELL macro to properly document that we're checking
for hardware that has the power down well.

This increases GEN6_RC6p_THRESHOLD from 100000 to 150000. For some
reason this avoids the gen6_gt_check_fifodbg.isra warnings and
associated GPU lockups, which makes my ivy bridge machine stable.

Use the number '1' instead of FORCEWAKE_KERNEL when requesting single

Some early bios versions seem to ship with the wrong tuning values for
the MCH, possible resulting in pipe underruns under load. Especially
on DP outputs this can lead to black screen, since DP really doesn't
like an occasional whack from an underrun.
Unfortunately the registers seem to be locked after boot, so the only
thing we can do is politely point out issues and suggest a BIOS
upgrade.
Arthur Runyan pointed us at this issue while discussion DP bugs - thus
far no confirmation from a bug report yet that it helps. But at least
some of my machines here have wrong values, so this might be useful in
understanding bug reports.
v2: After a bit more discussion with Art and Ben we've decided to only
the check the watermark values, since the OREF ones could be be a
notch more aggressive on certain machines.

We may not concurrently change the power wells code. Which
is already guaranteed since modesets aren't concurrent. That
leaves races against setup/teardown/suspend/resume, and for
those we already (try) rather hard not to hit concurrent
modesets.
No debug WARN_ON added since that would require us to grab the
modeset locks in init/suspend code. Which is again just cargo
culting since just grabbing the locks in those paths isn't good
enough, we need the right order of operations, too.

The current code was wrong in many different ways, so this is a full
rewrite. We don't have "different power wells for different parts of
the GPU", we have a single power well, but we have multiple registers
that can be used to request enabling/disabling the power well. So
let's be a good citizen and only use the register we're suppose to
use, except when we're loading the driver, where we clear the request
made by the BIOS.
If any of the registers is requesting the power well to be enabled, it
will be enabled. If none of the registers is requesting the power well
to be enabled, it will be disabled.
For now we're just forcing the power well to be enabled, but in the
next commits we'll change this.
V2:
- Remove debug messages that could be misleading due to possible
race conditions with KVMr, Debug and BIOS.
- Don't wait on disabling: after a conversaion with a hardware
engineer we discovered that the "restriction" on bit 31 is just
for the "enable" case, and we don't even need to wait on the
"disable" case.

The aim of this locking rework is that ioctls which a compositor should be
might call for every frame (set_cursor, page_flip, addfb, rmfb and
getfb/create_handle) should not be able to block on kms background
activities like output detection. And since each EDID read takes about
25ms (in the best case), that always means we'll drop at least one frame.
The solution is to add per-crtc locking for these ioctls, and restrict
background activities to only use the global lock. Change-the-world type
of events (modeset, dpms, ...) need to grab all locks.
Two tricky parts arose in the conversion:
- A lot of current code assumes that a kms fb object can't disappear while
holding the global lock, since the current code serializes fb
destruction with it. Hence proper lifetime management using the already
created refcounting for fbs need to be instantiated for all ioctls and
interfaces/users.
- The rmfb ioctl removes the to-be-deleted fb from all active users. But
unconditionally taking the global kms lock to do so introduces an
unacceptable potential stall point. And obviously changing the userspace
abi isn't on the table, either. Hence this conversion opportunistically
checks whether the rmfb ioctl holds the very last reference, which
guarantees that the fb isn't in active use on any crtc or plane (thanks
to the conversion to the new lifetime rules using proper refcounting).
Only if this is not the case will the code go through the slowpath and
grab all modeset locks. Sane compositors will never hit this path and so
avoid the stall, but userspace relying on these semantics will also not
break.
All these cases are exercised by the newly added subtests for the i-g-t
kms_flip, tested on a machine where a full detect cycle takes around 100
ms. It works, and no frames are dropped any more with these patches
applied. kms_flip also contains a special case to exercise the
above-describe rmfb slowpath.

We stopped reading FORCEWAKE for posting reads in

drm/i915: Never read FORCEWAKE
and started using something from the same cacheline instead. On the
bug reporter's machine this broke entering rc6 states after a
suspend/resume cycle. It turns out reading ECOBUS as posting read
worked fine, while GTFIFODBG did not, preventing RC6 states after
suspend/resume per the bug report referenced below. It's not entirely
clear why, but clearly GTFIFODBG was nowhere near the same cacheline
or address range as FORCEWAKE.
Trying out various registers for posting reads showed that all tested
registers for which NEEDS_FORCE_WAKE() (in i915_drv.c) returns true
work. Conversely, most (but not quite all) registers for which
NEEDS_FORCE_WAKE() returns false do not work. Details in the referenced
bug.
Based on the above, add posting reads on ECOBUS where GTFIFODBG was
previously relied on.
In true cargo cult spirit, add posting reads for FORCEWAKE_VLV writes as
well, but instead of ECOBUS, use FORCEWAKE_ACK_VLV which is in the same
address range as FORCEWAKE_VLV.

If we elect to disable self-refresh as they require too many FIFO
entries, clear the values prior to writing them into the registers. If
they are too large they may occupy more bits than available and so
corrupt neighbouring WM values.

The commit [23670b322: drm/i915: CPT+ pch transcoder workaround]
caused a regression on some HP laptops with IvyBridge. The whole
laptop screen is shifted downward for a few pixels constantly.
The problem appears only on LVDS while DP and VGA seem unaffected.
Also, the problem disappears once when go and back from S3.
(S4 resume still shows the same problem.)
This patch revives the minimum part the commit above dropped.
For fixing this regression, only the setup of CHICKEN2 bit in
cpt_init_clock_gating() is needed.

registers to update them for the new cursor watermarks. This goes
horribly wrong as instead of clearing the cursor bits prior to or'ing in
the new values, we clear the rest of the register with the result that
the watermark registers contain bogus values.

As FBC is commonly disabled due to limitations of the chipset upon
output configurations, on many systems FBC is never enabled. For those
systems, it is advantageous to make use of the stolen memory for other
objects and so we defer allocation of the FBC chunk until we actually
require it. This increases the likelihood of that allocation failing,
but that in turns means that we are already taking advantage of the
stolen memory!
As well as delaying the allocation from driver initialisation until the
first use of FBC, we also return the stolen block after we finish using
it - allowing greater flexibility in our usage of stolen space. A side
effect of this is that we can then attempt to allocate only the required
amount of space (with a little slack to reduce reallocation rate and
avoid fragmentation).

Replace the wait for the ring to be clear with the more common wait for
the ring to be idle. The principle advantage is one less exported
intel_ring_wait function, and the removal of a hardcoded value.

way past the point where we re-enabled rc6. But somehow
reverting/disabling those commits doesn't help, but disabling rc6 at
least helps for many hangs on ilk. Obviously it doesn't change
anything at all on gen4, and there are still strange issues left on
gen5 (which we unfortunately can't readily reproduce).
Also, the error_state signature of the hangs which can be fixed with
this patch look remarkably different to those which seem to be
unaffected by the rc6 settings: The rc6 hangs are in the ring,
somewhere in the MI_FLUSH/PIPE_CONTROL sequence to make ilk coherent,
wheras all the other hangs tend to be at a random point in the middle
of the user batch. So it could also be that we have different issues.
Until we grow more clue, this at least helps some users.

This allows the power related code to run independently of the rest of
the pipeline, extending the resume and init time improvements into
userspace, which would otherwise have been blocked on the struct mutex
if we were doing PCU communication.

Communicating via the mailbox registers with the PCU can take quite
awhile. And updating the ring frequency or enabling turbo is not
something that needs to happen synchronously, so take it out of our init
and resume paths to speed things up (~200ms on my T420).

Needs to be set on every context restore as well, so set it as part of
the initial state so we can save/restore it. Note this removes the IVB
workaround value from VLV and uses the default value, just adding in the
L3 cache aging disable bit, since the IVB value is wrong for VLV.

Note that this old code has unconditionally set the w/a, which might
explain why fdi link training sometimes silently fails, and especially
why the auto-train did not seem to work properly.

requierd for all ports on the pch, not just DP: The important part
is that the bit is set whenever the pch transcoder is enabled, and

important that the pch transcoder is fully disabled, i.e. we have to
wait for bit 30 to clear before clearing the w/a bit.
Hence move to workaround into enable/disable_transcoder, where the pch
transcoder gets enabled/disabled.

Single-threaded forcewake was only used on some early pre-production
ivybridge machines, all the latest ones should use mt forcewake. And
we already assume this in other places of the code (e.g. DERRMR
support in the ddx, or the latest intel_gt_reset patch to reset any
lingering forcewake references left behind by the bios), so don't
bother here, too.

Some BIOSes may forcibly suspend RC6 during their operation which
trigger a warning as we find the hardware in a perplexing state upon
first use. So far that appears to be the worst symptom as fortuituously
we use the same values as the BIOS for programming the FORCEWAKE register.

BIOS should be setting the minimum voltage for rc6 to be 450mV. Old or
buggy BIOSen may not be doing this, so we correct it for them. Ideally
customers should update the BIOS as only it would know the optimal
values for the platform, so we leave that fact as a DRM_ERROR for the
user to see.
Unfortunately this isn't fixing any of the issues it was targeted to
fix, but it is documented that we must do it.

There is a special mechanism for communicating with the PCU already
being used for the ring frequency stuff. As we'll be needing this for
other commands, extract it now to make future code less error prone and
the current code more reusable.
I'm not entirely sure if this code matches 1:1 with the previous code
behaviorally. Functionally however, it should be the same.

The bit set by the commit does not exist on Haswell machines (at least

There's is another register (a read only, so no harm done) at 0x42020 on
Haswell GPUs. Let's just remove the write from the copy&paste that
introduced haswell_init_clock_gating().
A note for the interested reader, it does seem we have a duplication of
the 0x42020 register definition, hence the removal of 2 writes. That
duplication could be the object of a later patch.

The core functions were annotated with their locking requirements, but
we overlooked that they were exported, without any control over the
locking, to debugfs. So in order to enable debugfs to read the registers
without triggering sanity checks, we change the exported entry points to
properly take the required locks before calling the core routines.

fix this with a verbose backmerge. The git merge diff only shows a
bunch of trivial conflicts of the "code changed in lines next to each
another" kind.

With the new "standardized" sysfs interfaces we need to be a bit more
careful about setting the RPS values.
Because the sysfs code and the rps workqueue can run at the same time,
if the sysfs setter wins the race to the mutex, the workqueue can come
in and set a value which is out of range (ie. we're no longer protecting
by RPINTLIM).
I was not able to actually make this error occur in testing.

The same designer from the previous patch has told us to never read
FORCEWAKE. We only do this for the POSTING_READ(), so simply change that
to something within the same cacheline (for no reason in particular
other than it sounds nice). In the _mt case we can leverage
the gtfifodbg check for the POSTING_READ.

A designer familiar with the hardware has stated that the forcewake
timeout can theoretically be as high as a little over 1ms. Therefore we
modify our code to use 2ms (appropriate fudge and because we don't want
to round down).
Hopefully this can't prevent spurious timeouts.

For some odd reasons, the vlv forcewake code is rather different from
all other platforms, with no clear justification. Adjust things:
- Don't check whether the gt is awake already (and bail out early), we
need to grab a forcewake anyway. Otherwise the chip might go to
sleep too early. And this would also screw up our forcewake
accounting.
- Like all other platforms, check whether the gt has cleared the
forcewake bit in the _ACK register before setting it again.
- Use _MASKED_BIT_ENABLE/DISABLE macros
- Only use bit0 of the forcewake reg, not all 16 bits.
- check the gtfifodb reg like on all other platforms in _put.
- Drop the POSTING_READs for consistency.

We've had and still have too many issues where the gpu turbo doesn't
quite to what it's supposed to do (or what we want it to do).
Adding a tracepoint to track when the desired gpu frequency changes
should help a lot in characterizing and understanding problematic
workloads.
Also, this should be fairly interesting for power tuning (and
especially noticing when the gpu is stuck in high frequencies, as has
happened in the past) and hence for integration into powertop and
similar tools.

Avoid stalling and waiting for the GPU by checking to see if there is
sufficient inactive space in the aperture for us to bind the buffer
prior to writing through the GTT. If there is inadequate space we will
have to stall waiting for the GPU, and incur overheads moving objects
about. Instead, only incur the clflush overhead on the target object by
writing through shmem.

James Bottomley reported [1] a massive power regression, due to the
enabling of semaphores by default in 3.5. A workaround for him is to
again disable semaphores. And indeed, his system has a very hard time
to enter rc6 with semaphores enabled.
Ben Widawsky run around with a kill-a-watt a lot and noticed:
- There are indeed a few rare systems that seem to have a hard time
entering rc6 when desktop-idle.
- One machine, The Indestructible Toshiba regressed in this behaviour
between 3.5 and 3.6 in a merge commit! So rc6 behaviour with the
current setting seems to be highly timing dependent and not robust
at all.
- The behaviour James reported wrt semaphores seems to be a freak
timing thing that only happens on his specific machine, confirming
that enabling semaphores shouldn't reduce rc6 residency.
Now furthermore the Google ChromeOS guys reported [2] a while ago that
at least on some machines a simply a blinking cursor can keep the gpu
turbo at the highest frequency. This is because the current rps limits
used on snb/ivb are highly asymmetric.
On the theory that gpu turbo and rc6 tuning values are related, we've
tried whether the much saner looking (since much less asymmetric) rps
tuning values used for hsw would also help entering rc6 more robustly.
And it seems to mostly work, and we don't really have the resources to
through-roughly tune things in any better way: The values from the
ChromeOS ppl seem to fare a bit worse for James' machine, so I guess
we better stick with something vpg (the gpu hw/windows group)
provided, hoping that they've done their jobs.

I have the faint hope that the total absence of any locking for the
rps code wasn't too good an idea and could very well have caused some
rc6 related regressions.
Unfortunately we've never managed to reproduce these issues on any of
our own machines, so the only way to go about this is to enable it and
see what happens.
While at it, kill some stale comments and improve the logging.

We change the drps/ips sw/hw state from different callers: Our own irq
handler, the external intel-ips module and from process context. Most
of these callers don't take any lock at all.
Protect everything by making the mchdev_lock irqsave and grabbing it in
all relevant callsites. Note that we have to convert a few sleeps in the
drps enable/disable code to delays, but alas, I'm not volunteering to
restructure the code around a few work items.
For paranoia add a spin_locked assert to ironlake_set_drps, too.

The update_gfx_val function called from mark_busy wasn't taking the
mchdev_lock, as it should have. Also sprinkle a few spinlock asserts
over the code to document things better.
Things are still rather confusing, especially since a few variables
in dev_priv are used by both the gen6+ rps code and the ilk ips code.
But protected by totally different locks. Follow-on patches will clean
that up.

wrapper that grabs the lock and an internal __ variant for callsites
within intel_pm.c that already have taken the lock.

This little dragon lair exploded the first time around when we've
refactored the code a bit to use the common wait_for_atomic_us in
"drm/i915: Group the GT routines together in both code and vtable",
which caused QA to file fdo bug #51738.
Chris Wilson entertained a few approaches to fixing #51738: Replacing
the udelay(1) with the previously-used udelay(10) (or any other
"sufficiently larger" delay), adding a posting read, or ditching the
delay completely and using cpu_relax. We went with the cpu_relax and
"915: Workaround hang with BSD and forcewake on SandyBridge". Which
blew up in fdo bug #52424, but adding the posting read while still
using cpu_relax seems to also fix that, it looks like the
posting read is the important ingriedient to fix these rc6 related
hangs on snb.
Popular theories as to why this is like it is include:
- A herd of pink elephants got royally angered somehow.
- The gpu has internally different functional units and judging by the
register offsets, the forcewake request register and the forcewake
ack registers are _not_ in the same functional unit (or at least
aren't reached through the same routes). Hence the posting read
syncs up with the wrong block and gets the entire gpu confused.
- ...
As a minimal ducttape fix for 3.6, let's just put these posting reads
into place again. We can try fancier approaches (like adding back the
cpu_relax instead of the udelay) in -next.

We believe to have squashed all issues around the gen6+ rps interrupt
generation and why the gpu sometimes got stuck. With that cleared up,
there's no user left for the sanitize_pm infrastructure, so let's just
rip it out.
Note that 'intel_reg_write 0xa014 0x13070000' is the w/a if we find
ourselves stuck again.

The power docs say that when the gt leaves rc6, it is in the lowest
frequency and only about 25 usec later will switch to the frequency
selected in GEN6_RPNSWREQ. If the downclock limit expires in that
window and the down limit is set to the lowest possible frequency, the
hw will not send the down interrupt. Which leads to a too high gpu
clock and wasted power.

frequency
but got the logic inverted: The current code set the down limit as
long as we haven't reached it. Instead of only once with reached the
lowest frequency.
Note that we can't always set the downclock limit to 0, because
otherwise the hw will keep on bugging us with downclock request irqs
once the lowest level is reached.
For similar reasons also always set the upclock limit, otherwise the
hw might poke us again with interrupts.

sanitize_pm. To avoid duplication, extract the code into a common
function.

As suggested by Daniel, rip out the independent timers for device and
crtc busyness and integrate the manual powermanagement of the display
engine into the GEM core and its request tracking. The benefits are that
the code is a lot smaller, fewer moving parts and should fit more neatly
into the overall activity tracking of the driver.

I've botched up the handling of ironlake_disable_rc6. Fix this up by
calling it at the right place. Note though that ironlake_disable_rc6
does a bit more than just disabling rc6 - it also tears down all the
allocated context objects.
Hence we need to move intel_teardown_rc6 out and directly call it from
intel_modeset_cleanup.
Also properly mark ironlake_enable_rc6 as static and kill the un-used
declaration in i915_drv.h.
Note: In review a question popped out why disable_rc6 also tears down
the backing object and why we should move that out - it's simply for
consistency with gen6+ rps code, which does it that way.

For Haswell, on some of the early hardware revisions, it is possible to
run into issues when RC6 state is enabled and when pipes change state.

Most of the RPS and RC6 enabling functionality is similar to what we had
on Gen6/Gen7, so we preserve most of the registers.
Note that Haswell only has RC6, so account for that as well. As suggested
by Daniel Vetter, to reduce the amount of changes in the patch, we still
write the RC6p/RC6pp thresholds, but those are ignored on Haswell.
Note: Some discussion about the nature of the new tuning constants
popped up in review - the answer is that we don't know why they've
changed, but the guide from VPG with the magic numbers simply has
different values now.

The enable functions grabbed dev->struct_mutex themselves, whereas
the disable functions expected dev->struct_mutex to be held by the
caller. Move the locking out to the (currently only) callsite of
intel_enable_gt_powersave to make this more consistent.
Originally this was prep work for future patches, but I've chased down
a totally wrong alley. Still, I think this is a sensible
clarification.

I'm seeing about a 5% FPS improvement across various benchmarks on my
IVB i3. Rumor has it that the higher end parts show even more benefit.
This derives from a patch originally given to me by Bernard. The docs
are confusing about the definition names (ie. medium really seems like
max), but it would seem it gives more cache to the GT at the expense of
uncore. This configuration makes the split most in favor of the GT. I've
not tried the other IDICOS values.

As we switch on/off the primary plane if it is completely obscured by an
overlapping video sprite, we also nee to make sure that we update the
FBC configuration at the same time.

We still don't understand why this fails exactly, but if fails way
too often for a simple debug information. Furthermore the current
ducttape should prevent the gpu from getting stuck at low frequencies.
Hence tune down the dmesg noise.
Note that the known failure case is that the register read returns 0
when the gpu gets confused.

Media turbo requests can either use RPVSWREQ or RPNSWREQ to indicate
what the interrupt handler should do. Since we only deal with the
latter in our turbo code, make the media engine use that for turbo
requests.

In order to avoid missed down-interrupts when coming out of RC6, it is
advised that we always reset the down-threshold upon a PM event. This is
due to that the PM unit goes through a little dance when coming out of
RC6, it first brings the GPU up at the lowest frequency then a short
time later it restores the thresholds. During that interval, the
down-interval may expire and the interrupt be suppressed.
Now aware of the dance taking place within the GPU when coming out of
RC6, one wonders what other writes need to be queued in the fifo buffer
in order to be properly sequenced; setting the RP state appears to be
one.

In many places we wish to iterate over the rings associated with the
GPU, so refactor them to use a common macro.
Along the way, there are a few code removals that should be side-effect
free and some rearrangement which should only have a cosmetic impact,
such as error-state.
Note that this slightly changes the semantics in the hangcheck code:
We now always cycle through all enabled rings instead of
short-circuiting the logic.
v2: Pull in a couple of suggestions from Ben and Daniel for
intel_ring_initialized() and not removing the warning (just moving them
to a new home, closer to the error).

This attempts to enable all the available power wells during the
initialization.
Those power wells can be enabled in parallel or on-demand, and disabled
when no longer needed, but this is out of scope of this initial
enablement. Proper tracking of who uses which power well will require
a considerable rework of our display handling, so we just leave them all
enabled when the driver is loaded for now.

Every time we use the device after a period of idleness, check that the
power management setup is still sane. This is to workaround a bug
whereby it seems that we begin suppressing power management interrupts,
preventing SandyBridge+ from going into turbo mode.
This patch does have a side-effect. It removes the mark-busy for just
moving the cursor - we don't want to increase the render clock just for
the sprite, though we may want to bump the display frequency. I'd argue
that we do not, and certainly don't want to take the struct_mutex here
due to the large latencies that introduces.

The LP refers to 'low priority' as opposed to the high priority
ring on gen2/3. So lets constrain its use to the code of that era.
Unfortunately we can't yet completely remove the associated
macros from common headers and shove them into i915_dma.c to
the other dri1 legacy support code, a few cleanups are still
missing for that.

This moves the clock gating-related functions into intel_pm module.
Also, please note that we do change the function type from static to
non-static in this patch for the move, to prevent breaking bisecting with
non-working intermediate commit. Those are returned back to static form in
the following patch which setups a generic PM initialization function,
which was split into a different one to simplify review.
