Some monitors apparently forget to mark any mode as preferred in the
EDID. In this particular case we have a very generic looking ID
"PNP Model 0 Serial Number 4" / "LVDS 800x600" so a specific quirk
doesn't seem particularly wise. Also the quirk we have
(EDID_QUIRK_FIRST_DETAILED_PREFERRED) is actually defunct so we'd
have to fix it first.
When there is no preferred mode we currently fall back to the VBT.
That approach fails us here as the VBT mode is 1024x768 whereas
the panel resolution is 800x600. So instead of falling back to the
VBT when there is no preferred mode let's just pick the first
probed mode. Only if the EDID provided no modes we fall back to
the VBT.
For this machine the VBIOS would appear to select the 800x600
60Hz EST mode rather than the first detailed mode (which is
the new fallback will pick). The two modes differ only by
having opposite sync polarities, which does not seem to matter
to the panel in question.

On lynxpoint the bios sometimes sets up the backlight using the CPU
display, but the driver expects using the PWM PCH override register.
Read the value from the CPU register, then convert it to the other
units by converting from the old duty cycle, to freq, to the new units.
This value is then programmed in the override register, after which
we set the override and disable the CPU display control. This allows
us to switch the source without flickering, and make the backlight
controls work in the driver.

correctly. We can employ the compiler to help us, and reduce the number
of wakerefs tracked when debugging, by passing around cookies provided
by the various rpm_get functions to their rpm_put counterpart. This
makes the pairing explicit, and given the required wakeref cookie the
compiler can verify that we pass an initialised value to the rpm_put

For regular builds, the compiler should be able to eliminate the unused

This reverts commit dc911f5bd8.
Per the report, no matter what display mode you select with xrandr, the
i915 driver will always select the alternate fixed mode. For the
reporter this means that the display will always run at 40Hz which is
quite annoying. This may be due to the mode comparison.
But there are some other potential issues. The choice of alt_fixed_mode
seems dubious. It's the first non-preferred mode, but there are no
guarantees that the only difference would be refresh rate. Similarly,
there may be more than one preferred mode in the probed modes list, and
the commit changes the preferred mode selection to choose the last one
on the list instead of the first.
(Note that the probed modes list is the raw, unfiltered, unsorted list
of modes from drm_add_edid_modes(), not the pretty result after a
drm_helper_probe_single_connector_modes() call.)
Finally, we already have eerily similar code in place to find the
downclock mode for DRRS that seems like could be reused here.
Back to the drawing board.
Note: This is a hand-crafted revert due to conflicts. If it fails to
backport, please just try reverting the original commit directly.

Split out BXT and CNP's setup_backlight(),enable_backlight(),
disable_backlight() and hz_to_pwm() into
two separate functions instead of reusing BXT function.
Reuse set_backlight() and get_backlight() since they have
no reference to the utility pin.
v2: Reuse BXT functions with controller 0 instead of
redefining it. (Jani).
Use dev_priv->rawclk_freq instead of getting the value
from SFUSE_STRAP.
v3: Avoid setup backligh controller along with hooks and
fully reuse hooks setup as suggested by Jani.
v4: Clean up commit message.
v5: Implement per PCH instead per platform.
v6: Introduce a new function for CNP.(Jani and Ville)
v7: Squash the all CNP Backlight support patches into a
single patch. (Jani)
v8: Correct indentation, remove unneeded blank lines and
correct mail address (Jani).
v9: Remove unused enum pipe. (by CI)
v10: Remove comment mentioning SFUSE_STRAP in a part of
the code that we don't use it. (Jani)
Make controller = 0 since current CNP has only one
controller and put a comment mentioning why we
reuse the BXT definitions and are keeping the
controller = 0. (DK)
v11: Remove spurious line. (DK)

An error from intel_get_pipe_from_connector() would mean a bug somewhere
else, but we still should check for it to prevent some other more
obscure bug later.
v2:
- Fall back to a reasonable default instead of bailing out in case of
error. (Jani)
v3:
- Fix s/PIPE_INVALID/INVALID_PIPE/ typo. (Jani)
v4:
- Fix bogus bracing around WARN() condition. (Ville)

Introduce intel_cdclk state which for now will track the cdclk
frequency, the vco frequency and the reference frequency (not sure we
want the last one, but I put it there anyway). We'll also make the
.get_cdclk() function fill out this state structure rather than
just returning the current cdclk frequency.
One immediate benefit is that calling .get_cdclk() will no longer
clobber state stored under dev_priv unless ex[plicitly told to do
so. Previously it clobbered the vco and reference clocks stored
there on some platforms.
We'll expand the use of this structure to actually precomputing the
state and whatnot later.
v2: Constify intel_cdclk_state_compare()
v3: Document intel_cdclk_state_compare()
v4: Deal with i945gm_get_cdclk()

Currently the backlight controller is taken as 0. It needs to derive
value from the VBT. Adding the necessary changes.

- drop obsolete comments, drop redundant initialization (Bob)
- merge debug logging into one

Geminilake is mostly backwards compatible with broxton, so change most
of the IS_BROXTON() checks to IS_GEN9_LP(). Differences between the
platforms will be implemented in follow-up patches.
v2: Don't reuse broxton's path in intel_update_max_cdclk().
Don't set plane count as in broxton.
v3: Rebase
v4: Include the check intel_bios_is_port_hpd_inverted().
Commit message.
v5: Leave i915_dmc_info() out; glk's csr version != bxt's. (Rodrigo)
v6: Rebase.
v7: Convert a few mode IS_BROXTON() occurances in pps, ddi, dsi and pll
code. (Rodrigo)
v8: Squash a couple of DDI patches with more conversions. (Rodrigo)

Some Kabylake SKUs are going to use Kabypoint PCH.
It is mainly for Halo and DT ones.
>From our specs it doesn't seem that KBP brings
any change on the display south engine. So let's consider
this as a continuation of SunrisePoint, i.e., SPT+.
Since it is easy to get confused by a letter change:
KBL = Kabylake - CPU/GPU codename.
KBP = Kabypoint - PCH codename.
