Also the documents in platform.c shows that platform_device_del

Coverity complains that xhci_evaluate_context_result() is missing a
break statement after the COMP_EBADSLT switch case. It's not a big
deal, since we wanted to return the same error code as the case
statement below it does. The end result would be one that a Slot
Disabled error completion code would also print the warning message
associated with a Context State error code. No other bad behavior would
result.

The command cancellation code doesn't check whether find_trb_seg()
couldn't find the segment that contains the TRB to be canceled. This
could cause a NULL pointer deference later in the function when next_trb
is called. It's unlikely to happen unless something is wrong with the
command ring pointers, so add some debugging in case it happens.
This patch should be backported to stable kernels as old as 3.0, that

The hub status endpoint has a long 'bInterval', which is 255ms
for FS/LS device and 256ms for HS device according to USB 2.0 spec,
so the device connection change may be reported later more than 255ms
via status pipe.
The connection change in hub may have been happened already on the
downstream ports, but no status URB completes when it is killed
in hub_suspend(auto), so the connection change may be missed by some
buggy hub devices, which won't generate remote wakeup signal after
their remote wakeup is enabled and they are put into suspend state.
The problem can be observed at least on the below Genesys Logic, Inc.
hub devices:
0x05e3,0x0606
0x05e3,0x0608
In theory, there is no way to fix the problem completely, but we
can make it less likely to occur by this patch.
This patch introduces one quirk of HUB_QUIRK_CHECK_PORTS_AUTOSUSPEND
to check ports' change during hub_suspend(auto) for the buggy
devices. If ports' change is found, terminate the auto suspend and
return to working state.
So for the buggy hubs, if the connection change happend before
the ports' check, it can be handled correctly. If it happens between
the ports' check and enabling remote wakeup/entering suspend, it
will be missed. Considered the interval is quite short, it is very
less likely to happen during the window.

The driver does not wait until the hardware buffer (for data from the PC to the

Solution: Implement a chars_in_buffer function that checks both the software

indicates the hw buffer is not empty, let the function return at least 1. This
has been verified to work correctly with an FT232RL. The check on the hw buffer

This patch (as1620) speeds up USB root-hub resumes in the common case
where every enabled port has its suspend feature set (which currently
will be true for every runtime resume of the root hub). If all the
enabled ports are suspended then resuming the root hub won't resume
any of the downstream devices. In this case there's no need for a
Resume Recovery delay, because that delay is meant to give devices a
chance to get ready for active use.
To keep track of the port suspend features, the patch adds a
"port_is_suspended" flag to struct usb_device. This has to be tracked
separately from the device's state; it's entirely possible for a USB-2
device to be suspended while the suspend feature on its parent port is
clear. The reason is that devices will go into suspend whenever their
parent hub does.

This patch (as1619) improves the interface to the "hub_for_each_child"
macro. The name clearly suggests that the macro iterates over child
devices; it does not suggest that the loop will also iterate over
unnconnected ports.
The patch changes the macro so that it will skip over unconnected
ports and iterate only the actual child devices. The two existing
call sites are updated to avoid testing for a NULL child pointer,

xHCI fixes for 3.7-rc3
Hi Greg,
Here's four bug fixes for 3.7.
The first patch fixes a potential deadlock in the USB port power off code,
and the last two patches fix bugs in the USB 3.0 Link PM patchset. The
second one is trivial and removes an unnecessary cast.
Sarah Sharp
Here's a new set of fixes for v3.7-rc3. It's quite small, only
four patches.
There's one bug fix for the newly added musb-dsps glue layer where
we could be overflowing a buffer when creating the instance name.
NET2272 got a fix for a case where the lock would be left held
when exiting the IRQ handler with error in case of Spurious IRQs.
Renensas USBHS got a DMA stall fix which would cause transfers to
stall forever and a NULL pointer deref fix in case of pipe detach.

to avoid an overflow. However, the type cast happens
too late. The fix is to force ULL from the beginning.

As a result the error path in the probe function is simplified, and the

Enhance the ehci-platform driver to also accept no_io_watchdog as a platform

This patch (as1614) updates the isochronous scheduling in ohci-hcd to
match the new semantics for URB_ISO_ASAP. Testing revealed a hardware
bug in the way my OHCI controller handles expired isochronous TDs;

This patch (as1609) changes the way ehci-hcd uses the "Isochronous
Scheduling Threshold" in its calculations. Until now the code has
ignored the threshold except for certain Intel PCI-based controllers.
This violates the EHCI spec.
The new code takes the threshold into account always, removing the
need for the fs_i_thresh quirk flag. In addition it implements the
"full frame cache" setting more efficiently, moving forward only as
far as the next frame boundary instead of always moving forward 8
microframes.

This patch (as1608) reworks the logic used by ehci-hcd for scheduling
isochronous transfers. Now the modular calculations are all based on
a window that starts at the last frame scanned for isochronous
completions. No transfer descriptors for any earlier frames can
possibly remain on the schedule, so there can be no confusion from
schedule wrap-around. This removes the need for a "slop" region of
arbitrary size.
There's no need to check for URBs that are longer than the schedule
length. With the old code they could throw things off by wrapping
around and appearing to end in the near future rather than the distant
future. Now such confusion isn't possible, and the existing test for
submissions that extend too far into the future will also catch those
that exceed the schedule length. (But there still has to be an
initial test to handle the case where the schedule already extends as
far into the future as possible.)
Delays caused by IRQ latency won't confuse the algorithm unless they
are ridiculously long (over 250 ms); they will merely reduce how far
into the future new transfers can be scheduled. A few people have
reported problems caused by delays of 50 ms or so. Now instead of
failing completely, isochronous transfers will experience a brief
glitch and then continue normally.
(Whether this is truly a good thing is debatable. A latency as large
as 50 ms generally indicates a bug is present, and complete failure of
audio or video transfers draws people's attention pretty vividly.
Making the transfers more robust also makes it easier for such bugs to
remain undetected.)
Finally, ehci->next_frame is renamed to ehci->last_iso_frame, because
that better describes what it is: the last frame to have been scanned
for isochronous completions.

Here are the USB patches against your 3.7-rc1 tree.
There are the usual UABI header file movements, and we finally are now
able to remove the dbg() macro that is over 15 years old (that had to
wait for after some other trees got merged into yours during the big
3.7-rc1 merge window.)
Other than that, nothing major, just a number of bugfixes and new device
ids. It turns out that almost all of the usb-serial drivers had bugs in
how they were handling their internal data, leaking memory, hence all of
those fixups.

Here's the first set of fixes for v3.7-rc cycle.
DesignWare Core USB3 Driver (dwc3) got two fixes. The first one fixes a long
standing bug which would keep endpoint with BUSY flag set forever if we cancel
a transfer which has already been started by the controller. The second fix
will just switch PHYs back off when DWC3 driver is removed.
MUSB fixed a bug which would cause a Kernel Oops at least on AM3517 when
removing a device. For some reason that particular device can fall into a
situation where you have both Disconnect and Endpoint IRQs happen
simultaneously (have both bits set in IRQ_STATUS register) and, because
Disconnect Interrupt is handled before Endpoint Interrupts, we would try to
transfer data over a disconnected device, thus generating a kernel oops.
Renensas' USB DRD driver got two fixes which are a) fixing an off-by-one bug on
the pipe iterator implementation and b) fixing Interrupt Status Clear procedure
in order to properly clear a single Interrupt event without clearing (and
masking) other events we didn't handle yet.

This patch (as1615) fixes a bug in the Garmin USB serial driver. It
uses attach, disconnect, and release routines to carry out actions
that should be handled by port_probe and port_remove routines, because
they access port-specific data.
The bug causes an oops when the device in unplugged, because the
private data for each port structure now gets erased when the port is
unbound from the driver, resulting in a null-pointer dereference.

The STOTG04 is an replacement for ISP1301.
Most of the registers on STOTG04 are the same as on ISP1301, but the
register ISP1301_I2C_OTG_CONTROL_2 (address 0x10) doesn't exist on the
ST part.
This is a work around for this by using the interrupt source register that
should behave the same on both parts and has the needed information.

If a USB transfer has already been started, meaning
we have already issued StartTransfer command to that
particular endpoint, DWC3_EP_BUSY flag has also
already been set.
When we try to cancel this transfer which is already
in controller's cache, we will not receive XferComplete
event and we must clear DWC3_EP_BUSY in order to allow
subsequent requests to be properly started.
The best place to clear that flag is right after issuing
DWC3_DEPCMD_ENDTRANSFER.

This patch is in preparation for adding PM support
dwc3 driver. We want to re-use dwc3_core_init and
dwc3_core_exit() functions on resume() and suspend()
callbacks respectively.
Moving even buffer allocation away from dwc3_core_init()
will allow us to reuse the event buffer which was allocated
long ago on our probe() routine.

The rest of the driver is using devm_kzalloc() where possible
and this patch is just making event buffer allocation follow

Hi Greg,
Here's four fixes for the USB 3.0 Link Power Management code. They
work around some USB 3.0 devices that don't support LPM, like the
Western Digital My Passport hard drive. They also fix an LPM disable
ref count bug that would cause LPM to remain disabled for a device
after a failed probe.
Please queue for 3.7 after the merge window closes. Several patches are

A long time ago, in v2.4, VM_RESERVED kept swapout process off VMA,
currently it lost original meaning but still has some effects:
| effect | alternative flags
-+------------------------+---------------------------------------------
1| account as reserved_vm | VM_IO
2| skip in core dump | VM_IO, VM_DONTDUMP
3| do not merge or expand | VM_IO, VM_DONTEXPAND, VM_HUGETLB, VM_PFNMAP
4| do not mlock | VM_IO, VM_DONTEXPAND, VM_HUGETLB, VM_PFNMAP
This patch removes reserved_vm counter from mm_struct. Seems like nobody
cares about it, it does not exported into userspace directly, it only
reduces total_vm showed in proc.
Thus VM_RESERVED can be replaced with VM_IO or pair VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP.
remap_pfn_range() and io_remap_pfn_range() set VM_IO|VM_DONTEXPAND|VM_DONTDUMP.
remap_vmalloc_range() set VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP.

The Set SEL control transfer tells a device the exit latencies
associated with a device-initated U1 or U2 exit. Since a parent hub may
initiate a transition to U1 soon after a downstream port's U1 timeout is
set, we need to make sure the device receives the Set SEL transfer
before the parent hub timeout is set.

Some USB 3.0 devices signal that they don't implement Link PM by having
all zeroes in the U1/U2 exit latencies in their SuperSpeed BOS
descriptor. Don found that a Western Digital device he has experiences
transfer errors when LPM is enabled. The lsusb shows the U1/U2 exit
latencies are set to zero:
Binary Object Store Descriptor:

After the probe finishes, we want to attempt to re-enable LPM, order to

Pull vfs update from Al Viro:
- big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of
that is moved to fs/file.c
(BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is,
we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct
file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons
are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of
struct file we used to have way back).
A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives,
disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least
doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of
relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file
leak.
- related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in
there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have).
- also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into
that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and
switch of fdinfo to seq_file.
- Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to
take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate
pile, this was just a mechanical code movement.
- a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle,
there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)."
Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly
simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file()

Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
"This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.
The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.
The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
handle those places with simple trivial patches.
Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
for most of the code size growth in my git tree.
Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
"capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.
While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.
Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
linux-next.
After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

round including considerable API and behavior cleanups.
* delayed_work combines a timer and a work item. The handling of the
timer part has always been a bit clunky leading to confusing
cancelation API with weird corner-case behaviors. delayed_work is
updated to use new IRQ safe timer and cancelation now works as
expected.
* Another deficiency of delayed_work was lack of the counterpart of
mod_timer() which led to cancel+queue combinations or open-coded
timer+work usages. mod_delayed_work[_on]() are added.
These two delayed_work changes make delayed_work provide interface
and behave like timer which is executed with process context.
* A work item could be executed concurrently on multiple CPUs, which
is rather unintuitive and made flush_work() behavior confusing and
half-broken under certain circumstances. This problem doesn't
exist for non-reentrant workqueues. While non-reentrancy check
isn't free, the overhead is incurred only when a work item bounces
across different CPUs and even in simulated pathological scenario
the overhead isn't too high.
All workqueues are made non-reentrant. This removes the
distinction between flush_[delayed_]work() and
flush_[delayed_]_work_sync(). The former is now as strong as the
latter and the specified work item is guaranteed to have finished
execution of any previous queueing on return.
* In addition to the various bug fixes, Lai redid and simplified CPU
hotplug handling significantly.
* Joonsoo introduced system_highpri_wq and used it during CPU
hotplug.
There are two merge commits - one to pull in IRQ safe timer from
tip/timers/core and the other to pull in CPU hotplug fixes from
wq/for-3.6-fixes as Lai's hotplug restructuring depended on them."
Fixed a number of trivial conflicts, but the more interesting conflicts
were silent ones where the deprecated interfaces had been used by new
code in the merge window, and thus didn't cause any real data conflicts.
Tejun pointed out a few of them, I fixed a couple more.

This is a pretty significant branch. It's the introduction of the
first multiplatform support on ARM, and with this (and the later
branch) merged, it is now possible to build one kernel that contains
support for highbank, vexpress, mvebu, socfpga, and picoxcell. More
platforms will be convered over in the next few releases.
Two critical last things had to be done for this to be practical and
possible:
* Today each platform has its own include directory under
mach-<mach>/include/mach/*, and traditionally that is where a lot of
driver/platform shared definitions have gone, such as platform data
structures. They now need to move out to a common location instead,
and this branch moves a large number of those out to
include/linux/platform_data.
* Each platform used to list the device trees to compile for its
boards in mach-<mach>/Makefile.boot.
Both of the above changes will mean that there are some merge
conflicts to come (and some to resolve here). It's a one-time move and
once it settles in, we should be good for quite a while. Sorry for the
overhead.

Major thing here is that the Broadcom bcmring platform is removed. It's an

need of some cleanup. Broadcom came back and suggested that we just
deprecate the platform for now, since they aren't going to spend the
resources needed on cleaning it up, and there are no users of the platform

remove the old obsolete ub.c driver from the tree. There are also the

This patch (as1607) fixes a race that can occur if a USB host
controller is removed while a process is reading the
/sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices file.
The usb_device_read() routine uses the bus->root_hub pointer to
determine whether or not the root hub is registered. The is not a
valid test, because the pointer is set before the root hub gets
registered and remains set even after the root hub is unregistered and
deallocated. As a result, usb_device_read() or usb_device_dump() can
access freed memory, causing an oops.
The patch changes the test to use the hcd->rh_registered flag, which
does get set and cleared at the appropriate times. It also makes sure
to hold the usb_bus_list_lock mutex while setting the flag, so that
usb_device_read() will become aware of new root hubs as soon as they
are registered.

xHCI bug fixes for 3.7
Hi Greg,
Here's three small bug fixes for 3.7. They fix a NULL pointer deference
and lost USB device unplug events, as well as making sure the xHCI
driver doesn't prevent system suspend.

Properly report aborted commands.
Also don't access cmdinfo after kicking task management,
it may not be valid any more once it returns.

When a device with an isochronous endpoint is behind a hub plugged into
the Intel Panther Point xHCI host controller, and the driver submits
multiple frames per URB, the xHCI driver will set the Block Event
Interrupt (BEI) flag on all but the last TD for the URB. This causes
the host controller to place an event on the event ring, but not send an
interrupt. When the last TD for the URB completes, BEI is cleared, and
we get an interrupt for the whole URB.
However, under a Panther Point xHCI host controller, if the parent hub
is unplugged when one or more events from transfers with BEI set are on
the event ring, a port status change event is placed on the event ring,
but no interrupt is generated. This means URBs stop completing, and the
USB device disconnect is not noticed. Something like a USB headset will
cause mplayer to hang when the device is disconnected.
If another transfer is sent (such as running `sudo lsusb -v`), the next
transfer event seems to "unstick" the event ring, the xHCI driver gets
an interrupt, and the disconnect is reported to the USB core.
The fix is not to use the BEI flag under the Panther Point xHCI host.
This will impact power consumption and system responsiveness, because
the xHCI driver will receive an interrupt for every frame in all
isochronous URBs instead of once per URB.
Intel chipset developers confirm that this bug will be hit if the BEI
flag is used on any endpoint, not just ones that are behind a hub.
This patch should be backported to kernels as old as 3.0, that contain
the commit 69e848c209 "Intel xhci: Support
EHCI/xHCI port switching."

PHY_CLK_VALID bit doesn't work properly with UTMI PHY.
e.g. This bit is always zero on P5040, etc.
There is no need to check this bit for UTMI PHY, just keep
checking for ULPI PHY to prevent system hanging.
This patch should be squashed into previous commit 3735ba8db8

TIAO/DIYGADGET USB Multi-Protocol Adapter (TUMPA) is an FTDI FT2232H
based device which provides an easily accessible JTAG, SPI, I2C, serial
breakout.

FTDI FT2232H provides two serial channels (A and B), but on the TUMPA
channel A is dedicated to JTAG/SPI while channel B can be used for
UART/RS-232: use the ftdi_jtag_quirk to expose only channel B as
a usb-serial interface to userspace.
