In order to promote interoperability between userspace tracers and ftrace,
add a trace_clock that reports raw TSC values which will then be recorded
in the ring buffer. Userspace tracers that also record TSCs are then on
exactly the same time base as the kernel and events can be unambiguously
interlaced.
Tested: Enabled a tracepoint and the "tsc" trace_clock and saw very large
timestamp values.

Note that CPUID Fn8000_001D_EAX slightly differs to Intel's CPUID function 4.
Bits 14-25 contain NumSharingCache. Actual number of cores sharing
this cache. SW to add value of one to get result.
The corresponding bits on Intel are defined as "maximum number of threads
sharing this cache" (with a "plus 1" encoding).
Thus a different method to determine which cores are sharing a cache
level has to be used.

QEMU first retrieves the supported features via KVM_GET_SUPPORTED_CPUID
and then sets them later. So guest's X86_FEATURE_XSAVE should be masked
out on hosts without X86_FEATURE_XSAVE, making kvm_set_cr4 with
X86_CR4_OSXSAVE fail. Userspaces that allow specifying guest cpuid with
X86_FEATURE_XSAVE even on hosts that do not support it, might be
susceptible to this attack from inside the guest as well.
Allow setting X86_CR4_OSXSAVE bit only if host has XSAVE support.

The memory range descriptors in the _CRS control method contain an address
translation offset for host bridges. This value is used to translate
addresses across the bridge. The support to use _TRA values is present for
other architectures but not for X86 platforms.
For existing X86 platforms the _TRA value is zero. Non-zero _TRA values
are expected on future X86 platforms. This change will register that value
with the resource.

The xw9300 BIOS supplies _SEG methods that are incorrect, which results
in some LSI SCSI devices not being discovered. This adds a quirk to
ignore _SEG on this machine and default to zero.
The xw9300 has three host bridges:
ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (domain 0000 [bus 00-3f])
ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI1] (domain 0001 [bus 40-7f])
ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI2] (domain 0002 [bus 80-ff])
When the BIOS "ACPI Bus Segmentation" option is enabled (as it is by
default), the _SEG methods of the PCI1 and PCI2 bridges return 1 and 2,
respectively. However, the BIOS implementation appears to be incomplete,
and we can't enumerate devices in those domains.
But if we assume PCI1 and PCI2 really lead to buses in domain 0,
everything works fine. Windows XP and Vista also seem to ignore
these _SEG methods.

While copying the argument structures in HYPERVISOR_event_channel_op()
and HYPERVISOR_physdev_op() into the local variable is sufficiently
safe even if the actual structure is smaller than the container one,
copying back eventual output values the same way isn't: This may
collide with on-stack variables (particularly "rc") which may change
between the first and second memcpy() (i.e. the second memcpy() could
discard that change).
Move the fallback code into out-of-line functions, and handle all of
the operations known by this old a hypervisor individually: Some don't
require copying back anything at all, and for the rest use the
individual argument structures' sizes rather than the container's.

The nested NMI modifies the place (instruction, flags and stack)
that the first NMI will iret to. However, the copy of registers
modified is exactly the one that is the part of pt_regs in
the first NMI. This can change the behaviour of the first NMI.
In particular, Google's arch_trigger_all_cpu_backtrace handler
also prints regions of memory surrounding addresses appearing in
registers. This results in handled exceptions, after which nested NMIs
start coming in. These nested NMIs change the value of registers
in pt_regs. This can cause the original NMI handler to produce
incorrect output.
We solve this problem by interchanging the position of the preserved
copy of the iret registers ("saved") and the copy subject to being
trampled by nested NMI ("copied").

("xen PVonHVM: move shared_info to MMIO before kexec").
Currently kexec in a PVonHVM guest fails with a triple fault because the
new kernel overwrites the shared info page. The exact failure depends on
the size of the kernel image. This patch moves the pfn from RAM into an
E820 reserved memory area.
The pfn containing the shared_info is located somewhere in RAM. This will
cause trouble if the current kernel is doing a kexec boot into a new
kernel. The new kernel (and its startup code) can not know where the pfn
is, so it can not reserve the page. The hypervisor will continue to update
the pfn, and as a result memory corruption occours in the new kernel.
The toolstack marks the memory area FC000000-FFFFFFFF as reserved in the
E820 map. Within that range newer toolstacks (4.3+) will keep 1MB
starting from FE700000 as reserved for guest use. Older Xen4 toolstacks
will usually not allocate areas up to FE700000, so FE700000 is expected
to work also with older toolstacks.
In Xen3 there is no reserved area at a fixed location. If the guest is
started on such old hosts the shared_info page will be placed in RAM. As
a result kexec can not be used.

If the TSC deadline mode is supported, LAPIC timer one-shot mode can be
implemented using IA32_TSC_DEADLINE MSR. An interrupt will be generated
when the TSC value equals or exceeds the value in the IA32_TSC_DEADLINE
MSR.
This enables us to skip the APIC calibration during boot. Also, in
xapic mode, this enables us to skip the uncached apic access to re-arm
the APIC timer.
As this timer ticks at the high frequency TSC rate, we use the
TSC_DIVISOR (32) to work with the 32-bit restrictions in the
clockevent API's to avoid 64-bit divides etc (frequency is u32 and
"unsigned long" in the set_next_event(), max_delta limits the next
event to 32-bit for 32-bit kernel).

the pieces of io data can be collected and write them to the guest memory
or MMIO together
Unfortunately, kvm splits the mmio access into 8 bytes and store them to
vcpu->mmio_fragments. If the guest uses "rep ins" to move large data, it
will cause vcpu->mmio_fragments overflow

The Way Access Filter in recent AMD CPUs may hurt the performance of
some workloads, caused by aliasing issues in the L1 cache.
This patch disables it on the affected CPUs.
The issue is similar to that one of last year:

This new patch does not replace the old one, we just need another
quirk for newer CPUs.
The performance penalty without the patch depends on the
circumstances, but is a bit less than the last year's 3%.
The workloads affected would be those that access code from the same
physical page under different virtual addresses, so different
processes using the same libraries with ASLR or multiple instances of
PIE-binaries. The code needs to be accessed simultaneously from both
cores of the same compute unit.

That includes the new parts of the AMD A-Series (aka Trinity) and the

As Mukesh explained it, the MMUEXT_TLB_FLUSH_ALL allows the
hypervisor to do a TLB flush on all active vCPUs. If instead
we were using the generic one (which ends up being xen_flush_tlb)
we end up making the MMUEXT_TLB_FLUSH_LOCAL hypercall. But
before we make that hypercall the kernel will IPI all of the
vCPUs (even those that were asleep from the hypervisor
perspective). The end result is that we needlessly wake them
up and do a TLB flush when we can just let the hypervisor
do it correctly.
This patch gives around 50% speed improvement when migrating
idle guest's from one host to another.

Other than ix86, x86-64 on EFI so far didn't set the
{g,s}et_wallclock accessors to the EFI routines, thus
incorrectly using raw RTC accesses instead.
Simply removing the #ifdef around the respective code isn't
enough, however: While so far early get-time calls were done in
physical mode, this doesn't work properly for x86-64, as virtual
addresses would still need to be set up for all runtime regions
(which wasn't the case on the system I have access to), so
instead the patch moves the call to efi_enter_virtual_mode()
ahead (which in turn allows to drop all code related to calling
efi-get-time in physical mode).
Additionally the earlier calling of efi_set_executable()
requires the CPA code to cope, i.e. during early boot it must be
avoided to call cpa_flush_array(), as the first thing this
function does is a BUG_ON(irqs_disabled()).
Also make the two EFI functions in question here static -
they're not being referenced elsewhere.

This commit was originally merged as bacef661ac ("x86-64/efi:
Use EFI to deal with platform wall clock") but it resulted in some
ASUS machines no longer booting due to a firmware bug, and so was
reverted in f026cfa82f. A pre-emptive fix for the buggy ASUS

For TXT boot, while Linux kernel trys to shutdown/S3/S4/reboot, it
need to jump back to tboot code and do TXT teardown work. Previously
kernel zapped all mem page identity mapping (va=pa) after booting, so
tboot code mem address was mapped again with identity mapping. Now
kernel didn't zap the identity mapping page table, so tboot related
code can remove the remapping code before trapping back now.

Some firmware still needs a 1:1 (virt->phys) mapping even after we've
called SetVirtualAddressMap(). So install the mapping alongside our
existing kernel mapping whenever we make EFI calls in virtual mode.
This bug was discovered on ASUS machines where the firmware
implementation of GetTime() accesses the RTC device via physical
addresses, even though that's bogus per the UEFI spec since we've
informed the firmware via SetVirtualAddressMap() that the boottime
memory map is no longer valid.
This bug seems to be present in a lot of consumer devices, so there's
not a lot we can do about this spec violation apart from workaround
it.

There are various pieces of code in arch/x86 that require a page table
with an identity mapping. Make trampoline_pgd a proper kernel page
table, it currently only includes the kernel text and module space
mapping.
One new feature of trampoline_pgd is that it now has mappings for the
physical I/O device addresses, which are inserted at ioremap()
time. Some broken implementations of EFI firmware require these
mappings to always be around.

Some CE4100 devices such as the:
- DFX module (01:0b.7)
- entertainment encryption device (01:10.0)
- multimedia controller (01:12.0)
do not have a device interrupt at all.
This patch fixes the PCI controller code to declare the missing
PCI configuration register space, as well as a fixup method for
forcing the interrupt pin to be 0 for these devices. This is
required to ensure that pci drivers matching on these devices
will be able to honor the various PCI subsystem calls touching
the configuration space.

The default reboot is via ACPI for this platform, and the CEFDK
bootloader actually supports this, but will issue a system power
off instead of a real reboot. Setting the reboot method to be
KBD instead of ACPI ensures proper system reboot.

The CE4100 platform is currently missing a proper pm_poweroff
implementation leading to poweroff making the CPU spin forever
and the CE4100 platform does not enter a low-power mode where
the external Power Management Unit can properly power off the
system. Power off on this platform is implemented pretty much
like reboot, by writing to the SoC built-in 8051 microcontroller
mapped at I/O port 0xcf9, the value 0x4.

On x86-64 syscall exit, 3 non exclusive events may happen
looping in the following order:
1) Check if we need resched for user preemption, if so call
schedule_user()
2) Check if we have pending signals, if so call do_notify_resume()
3) Check if we do syscall tracing, if so call syscall_trace_leave()
However syscall_trace_leave() has been written assuming it directly
follows the syscall and forget about the above possible 1st and 2nd
steps.
Now schedule_user() and do_notify_resume() exit in RCU user mode
because they have most chances to resume userspace immediately and
this avoids an rcu_user_enter() call in the syscall fast path.
So by the time we call syscall_trace_leave(), we may well be in RCU
user mode. To fix this up, simply call rcu_user_exit() in the beginning
of this function.
This fixes some reported RCU uses in extended quiescent state.

MPS tables are not needed for systems that have proper ACPI
support. This is also true for systems that have SFI in place.
So this patch allows the configuration (turning off) of

When 32-bit EFI is used with 64-bit kernel (or vice versa), turn off
efi_enabled once setup is done. Beyond setup, it is normally used to
determine if runtime services are available and we will have none.
This will resolve issues stemming from efivars modprobe panicking on a
32/64-bit setup, as well as some reboot issues on similar setups.

Current logic finds enough space for direct mapping page tables from 0
to end. Instead, we only need to find enough space to cover mr[0].start
to mr[nr_range].end -- the range that is actually being mapped by
init_memory_mapping()

The current CE4100 and 8250_pci code have both a limitation preventing the
registration and usage of CE4100's second UART. This patch changes the
platform code fixing up the UART port to work on a relative UART port
base address, as well as the 8250_pci code to make it register 2 UART ports
for CE4100 and pass the port index down to all consumers.

Add dma-debug interface debug_dma_mapping_error() to debug
drivers that fail to check dma mapping errors on addresses
returned by dma_map_single() and dma_map_page() interfaces.
This interface clears a flag set by debug_dma_map_page() to
indicate that dma_mapping_error() has been called by the
driver. When driver does unmap, debug_dma_unmap() checks the
flag and if this flag is still set, prints warning message
that includes call trace that leads up to the unmap. This
interface can be called from dma_mapping_error() routines to
enable dma mapping error check debugging.
Tested: Intel iommu and swiotlb (iommu=soft) on x86-64 with
CONFIG_DMA_API_DEBUG enabled and disabled.

'u128' currently used for CTR mode is on little-endian 'long long' swapped
and would require extra swap operations by SSE/AVX code. Use of le128
instead of u128 allows IV calculations to be done with vector registers
easier.

Posting this patch to fix an issue concerning sparse irq's that
I raised a while back. There was discussion about adding
refcounting to sparse irqs (to fix other potential race
conditions), but that does not appear to have been addressed
yet. This covers the only issue of this type that I've
encountered in this area.
A NULL pointer dereference can occur in
smp_irq_move_cleanup_interrupt() if we haven't yet setup the
irq_cfg pointer in the irq_desc.irq_data.chip_data.
In create_irq_nr() there is a window where we have set
vector_irq in __assign_irq_vector(), but not yet called
irq_set_chip_data() to set the irq_cfg pointer.
Should an IRQ_MOVE_CLEANUP_VECTOR hit the cpu in question during
this time, smp_irq_move_cleanup_interrupt() will attempt to
process the aforementioned irq, but panic when accessing
irq_cfg.
Only continue processing the irq if irq_cfg is non-NULL.

The only time we can call set_memory_uc() for a memory region is
when it is part of the direct kernel mapping. For the case where
we ioremap a memory region we must leave it alone.
This patch reimplements the fix from e8c7106280 ("x86, efi:
Calling __pa() with an ioremap()ed address is invalid") which
was reverted in e1ad783b12 because it caused a regression on
some MacBooks (they hung at boot). The regression was caused
because the commit only marked EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES_DATA as
E820_RESERVED_EFI, when it should have marked all regions that
have the EFI_MEMORY_RUNTIME attribute.
Despite first impressions, it's not possible to use
ioremap_cache() to map all cached memory regions on
CONFIG_X86_64 because of the way that the memory map might be
configured as detailed in the following bug report,

Although based on the Intel P6 design, the interrupt mechnanism
for KNC more closely resembles the Intel architectural
perfmon one.
We can't just re-use that code though, because KNC has different
MSR numbers for the status and ack registers.
In this case we just cut-and paste from perf_event_intel.c
with some minor changes, as it looks like it would not be
worth the trouble to change that code to be MSR-configurable.

x86_pmu.enable() is called from x86_pmu_enable() with
cpuc->enabled set to 0. This means we weren't re-enabling the
counters after a context switch.
This patch just removes the check, as it should't be necessary
(and the equivelent x86_ generic code does not have the checks).
The origin of this problem is the KNC driver being based on the
P6 one. The P6 driver also has this issue, but works anyway
due to various lucky accidents.

Early versions of Intel KNC chips have a bug where bits above 32
were not properly set. We worked around this by only using the
bottom 32 bits (out of 40 that should be available).
It turns out this workaround breaks overflow handling.
The buggy silicon will in theory never be used in production
systems, so remove this workaround so we get proper overflow
support.

Commit 20167d3421 ("x86-64: Fix
accounting in kernel_physical_mapping_init()") went a little too
far by entirely removing the counting of pre-populated page
tables: this should be done at boot time (to cover the page
tables set up in early boot code), but shouldn't be done during
memory hot add.
Hence, re-add the removed increments of "pages", but make them
and the one in phys_pte_init() conditional upon !after_bootmem.

The sysfs events group attribute currently shows all hw events,
including also undefined ones.
This patch filters out all undefined events out of the sysfs events
group attribute, so they don't even show up.

Add support to display hardware events translations available
through the sysfs. Add 'events' group attribute under the sysfs
x86 PMU record with attribute/file for each hardware event.
This patch adds only backbone for PMUs to display config under
'events' directory. The specific PMU support itself will come
in next patches, however this is how the sysfs group will look

Between 2.6.33 and 2.6.34 the PMU code was made modular.
The x86_pmu_enable() call was extended to disable cpuc->enabled
and iterate the counters, enabling one at a time, before calling
enable_all() at the end, followed by re-enabling cpuc->enabled.
Since cpuc->enabled was set to 0, that change effectively caused
the "val |= ARCH_PERFMON_EVENTSEL_ENABLE;" code in p6_pmu_enable_event()
and p6_pmu_disable_event() to be dead code that was never called.
This change removes this code (which was confusing) and adds some
extra commentary to make it more clear what is going on.

if PSE enabled, but extra counts should only be valid for x86_32.
This commit caused a kdump regression: the kdump kernel hangs.
Work is in progress to fundamentally fix the various page table
initialization issues that we have, via the design suggested
by H. Peter Anvin, but it's not ready yet to be merged.
So, to get a working kdump revert to the last known working version,
which is the revert of this commit and of a followup fix (which was
incomplete):

In check_hw_exists() we try to detect non-emulated MSR accesses
by writing an arbitrary value into one of the PMU registers
and check if it's value after a readout is still the same.
This algorithm silently assumes that the register does not contain
the magic value already, which is wrong in at least one situation.
Fix the algorithm to really do a read-modify-write cycle. This fixes
a warning under Xen under some circumstances on AMD family 10h CPUs.
The reasons in more details actually sound like a story from
Believe It or Not!:
First you need an AMD family 10h/12h CPU. These do not reset the
PERF_CTR registers on a reboot.
Now you boot bare metal Linux, which goes successfully through this
check, but leaves the magic value of 0xabcd in the register. You
don't use the performance counters, but do a reboot (warm reset).
Then you choose to boot Xen. The check will be triggered with a
recent Linux kernel as Dom0 again, trying to write 0xabcd into the
MSR. Xen silently drops the write (expected), but the subsequent read
will return the value in the register, which just happens to be the
expected magic value. Thus the test misleadingly succeeds, leaving
the kernel in the belief that the PMU is available. This will trigger

so only take struct kvm as a parameter.

In 32 bit guests, if a userspace process has %eax == -ERESTARTSYS
(-512) or -ERESTARTNOINTR (-513) when it is interrupted by an event
/and/ the process has a pending signal then %eip (and %eax) are
corrupted when returning to the main process after handling the
signal. The application may then crash with SIGSEGV or a SIGILL or it
may have subtly incorrect behaviour (depending on what instruction it
returned to).
The occurs because handle_signal() is incorrectly thinking that there
is a system call that needs to restarted so it adjusts %eip and %eax
to re-execute the system call instruction (even though user space had
not done a system call).
If %eax == -514 (-ERESTARTNOHAND (-514) or -ERESTART_RESTARTBLOCK
(-516) then handle_signal() only corrupted %eax (by setting it to
-EINTR). This may cause the application to crash or have incorrect
behaviour.
handle_signal() assumes that regs->orig_ax >= 0 means a system call so
any kernel entry point that is not for a system call must push a
negative value for orig_ax. For example, for physical interrupts on
bare metal the inverse of the vector is pushed and page_fault() sets
regs->orig_ax to -1, overwriting the hardware provided error code.
xen_hypervisor_callback() was incorrectly pushing 0 for orig_ax
instead of -1.
Classic Xen kernels pushed %eax which works as %eax cannot be both
non-negative and -RESTARTSYS (etc.), but using -1 is consistent with
other non-system call entry points and avoids some of the tests in
handle_signal().
There were similar bugs in xen_failsafe_callback() of both 32 and
64-bit guests. If the fault was corrected and the normal return path
was used then 0 was incorrectly pushed as the value for orig_ax.

This correctly sizes it as 64 bit on ARM but leaves it as unsigned
long on x86 (therefore no intended change on x86).
The long and ulong guest handles are now unused (and a bit dangerous)
so remove them.

Below is a RAS fix which reverts the addition of a sysfs attribute
which we agreed is not needed, post-factum. And this should go in now
because that sysfs attribute is going to end up in 3.7 otherwise and
thus exposed to userspace; removing it then would be a lot harder.
This is done as a merge rather than a simple patch/cherry-pick since
the baseline for this patch was not in the previous x86/urgent.

450cc20103 ("x86/mce: Provide boot argument to honour bios-set CMCI
threshold") added the bios_cmci_threshold sysfs attribute which was
supposed to communicate to userspace tools that BIOS CMCI threshold has
been honoured.
However, this info is not of any importance to userspace - it should
rather get the actual error count it has been thresholded already from
MCi_STATUS[38:52].
So drop this before it becomes a used interface (good thing we caught
this early in 3.7-rc1, right after the merge window closed).

Calling convention for internal functions and 'asmlinkage' functions is
different on x86-32. Therefore do not directly cast aesni_enc as XTS tweak
function, but use wrapper function in between. Fixes crash with "XTS +
aesni_intel + x86-32" combination.

When booting on a federated multi-server system (NumaScale), the
processor Northbridge lookup returns NULL; add guards to prevent this
causing an oops.
On those systems, the northbridge is accessed through MMIO and the
"normal" northbridge enumeration in amd_nb.c doesn't work since we're
generating the northbridge ID from the initial APIC ID and the last
is not unique on those systems. Long story short, we end up without
northbridge descriptors.

On systems with very large memory (1 TB in our case), BIOS may report a
reserved region or a hole in the E820 map, even above the 4 GB range. Exclude
these from the direct mapping.
[ hpa: this should be done not just for > 4 GB but for everything above the legacy
region (1 MB), at the very least. That, however, turns out to require significant
restructuring. That work is well underway, but is not suitable for rc/stable. ]

Intel PEBS in VT-x context uses the DS address as a guest linear
address, even though its programmed by the host as a host linear
address. This either results in guest memory corruption and or the
hardware faulting and 'crashing' the virtual machine. Therefore we have
to disable PEBS on VT-x enter and re-enable on VT-x exit, enforcing a
strict exclude_guest.
This patch enforces exclude_guest kernel side.

This patch adds the crc_pcl function that calculates CRC32C checksum using the
PCLMULQDQ instruction on processors that support this feature. This will
provide speedup over using CRC32 instruction only.
The usage of PCLMULQDQ necessitate the invocation of kernel_fpu_begin and
kernel_fpu_end and incur some overhead. So the new crc_pcl function is only
invoked for buffer size of 512 bytes or more. Larger sized
buffers will expect to see greater speedup. This feature is best used coupled
with eager_fpu which reduces the kernel_fpu_begin/end overhead. For
buffer size of 1K the speedup is around 1.6x and for buffer size greater than
4K, the speedup is around 3x compared to original implementation in crc32c-intel
module. Test was performed on Sandy Bridge based platform with constant frequency
set for cpu.

The hostprogs need access to the CONFIG_* symbols found in
include/generated/autoconf.h. But commit abbf1590de ("UAPI: Partition
the header include path sets and add uapi/ header directories") replaced
$(LINUXINCLUDE) with $(USERINCLUDE) which doesn't contain the necessary
include paths.
This has the undesirable effect of breaking the EFI boot stub because
the #ifdef CONFIG_EFI_STUB code in arch/x86/boot/tools/build.c is
never compiled.
It should also be noted that because $(USERINCLUDE) isn't exported by
the top-level Makefile it's actually empty in arch/x86/boot/Makefile.

alpha/arm/x86 use of those. Plus sanitizing the asm glue and

can be done independently for different architectures. The only

its face. Lastly, a quirk for older XenBus implementations that came
with an ancient v3.4 hypervisor (so RHEL5 based) - reading of certain

We actually do not do anything about it. Just return a default
value of zero and if the kernel tries to write anything but 0
we BUG_ON.
This fixes the case when an user tries to suspend the machine
and it blows up in save_processor_state b/c 'read_cr8' is set
to NULL and we get:

The hypervisor will trap it. However without this patch,
we would crash as the .read_tscp is set to NULL. This patch
fixes it and sets it to the native_read_tscp call.

The transparent huge page code passes a PMD pointer in as the third
argument of update_mmu_cache(), which expects a PTE pointer.
This never got noticed because X86 implements update_mmu_cache() as a
macro and thus we don't get any type checking, and X86 is the only
architecture which supports transparent huge pages currently.
Before other architectures can support transparent huge pages properly we
need to add a new interface which will take a PMD pointer as the third
argument rather than a PTE pointer.

In many places !pmd_present has been converted to pmd_none. For pmds
that's equivalent and pmd_none is quicker so using pmd_none is better.
However (unless we delete pmd_present) we should provide an accurate
pmd_present too. This will avoid the risk of code thinking the pmd is non
present because it's under __split_huge_page_map, see the pmd_mknotpresent
there and the comment above it.
If the page has been mprotected as PROT_NONE, it would also lead to a
pmd_present false negative in the same way as the race with
split_huge_page.
Because the PSE bit stays on at all times (both during split_huge_page and
when the _PAGE_PROTNONE bit get set), we could only check for the PSE bit,
but checking the PROTNONE bit too is still good to remember pmd_present
must always keep PROT_NONE into account.
This explains a not reproducible BUG_ON that was seldom reported on the
lists.
The same issue is in pmd_large, it would go wrong with both PROT_NONE and
if it races with split_huge_page.

.fault now can retry. The retry can break state machine of .fault. In
filemap_fault, if page is miss, ra->mmap_miss is increased. In the second
try, since the page is in page cache now, ra->mmap_miss is decreased. And
these are done in one fault, so we can't detect random mmap file access.
Add a new flag to indicate .fault is tried once. In the second try, skip
ra->mmap_miss decreasing. The filemap_fault state machine is ok with it.
I only tested x86, didn't test other archs, but looks the change for other
archs is obvious, but who knows :)

Provide rb_insert_augmented() and rb_erase_augmented() through a new
rbtree_augmented.h include file. rb_erase_augmented() is defined there as
an __always_inline function, in order to allow inlining of augmented
rbtree callbacks into it. Since this generates a relatively large
function, each augmented rbtree user should make sure to have a single
call site.

Implement an interval tree as a replacement for the VMA prio_tree. The
algorithms are similar to lib/interval_tree.c; however that code can't be
directly reused as the interval endpoints are not explicitly stored in the
VMA. So instead, the common algorithm is moved into a template and the
details (node type, how to get interval endpoints from the node, etc) are
filled in using the C preprocessor.
Once the interval tree functions are available, using them as a
replacement to the VMA prio tree is a relatively simple, mechanical job.

Cleanup patch in preparation for transparent hugepage support on s390.
Adding new architectures to the TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE config option can
make the "depends" line rather ugly, like "depends on (X86 || (S390 &&
64BIT)) && MMU".
This patch adds a HAVE_ARCH_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE instead. x86 already has
MMU "def_bool y", so the MMU check is superfluous there and
HAVE_ARCH_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE can be selected in arch/x86/Kconfig.

The core page allocator ensures that page flags are zeroed when freeing
pages via free_pages_check. A number of architectures (ARM, PPC, MIPS)
rely on this property to treat new pages as dirty with respect to the data
cache and perform the appropriate flushing before mapping the pages into
userspace.
This can lead to cache synchronisation problems when using hugepages,
since the allocator keeps its own pool of pages above the usual page
allocator and does not reset the page flags when freeing a page into the
pool.
This patch adds a new architecture hook, arch_clear_hugepage_flags, so
that architectures which rely on the page flags being in a particular
state for fresh allocations can adjust the flags accordingly when a page
is freed into the pool.

A long time ago, in v2.4, VM_RESERVED kept swapout process off VMA,
currently it lost original meaning but still has some effects:

Thus VM_RESERVED can be replaced with VM_IO or pair VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP.
remap_pfn_range() and io_remap_pfn_range() set VM_IO|VM_DONTEXPAND|VM_DONTDUMP.
remap_vmalloc_range() set VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP.

Replace the generic vma-flag VM_PFN_AT_MMAP with x86-only VM_PAT.
We can toss mapping address from remap_pfn_range() into
track_pfn_vma_new(), and collect all PAT-related logic together in
arch/x86/.
This patch also restores orignal frustration-free is_cow_mapping() check
in remap_pfn_range(), as it was before commit v2.6.28-rc8-88-g3c8bb73
("x86: PAT: store vm_pgoff for all linear_over_vma_region mappings - v3")
is_linear_pfn_mapping() checks can be removed from mm/huge_memory.c,
because it already handled by VM_PFNMAP in VM_NO_THP bit-mask.

With PAT enabled, vm_insert_pfn() looks up the existing pfn memory
attribute and uses it. Expectation is that the driver reserves the
memory attributes for the pfn before calling vm_insert_pfn().
remap_pfn_range() (when called for the whole vma) will setup a new
attribute (based on the prot argument) for the specified pfn range.
This addresses the legacy usage which typically calls remap_pfn_range()
with a desired memory attribute. For ranges smaller than the vma size
(which is typically not the case), remap_pfn_range() will use the
existing memory attribute for the pfn range.
Expose two different API's for these different behaviors.
track_pfn_insert() for tracking the pfn attribute set by vm_insert_pfn()
and track_pfn_remap() for the remap_pfn_range().
This cleanup also prepares the ground for the track/untrack pfn vma
routines to take over the ownership of setting PAT specific vm_flag in
the 'vma'.

'pfn' argument for track_pfn_vma_new() can be used for reserving the
attribute for the pfn range. No need to depend on 'vm_pgoff'
Similarly, untrack_pfn_vma() can depend on the 'pfn' argument if it is
non-zero or can use follow_phys() to get the starting value of the pfn
range.
Also the non zero 'size' argument can be used instead of recomputing it
from vma.
This cleanup also prepares the ground for the track/untrack pfn vma
routines to take over the ownership of setting PAT specific vm_flag in the
'vma'.

(network, block, console, etc). This is similar to how PVHVM guests
operate in X86 platform nowadays - except that on ARM there is no need
for QEMU. The end result is that we share a lot of the generic Xen
drivers and infrastructure.

This is a preparatory patch for the introduction of NT_SIGINFO elf note.
Make the location of compat_siginfo_t uniform across eight architectures
which have it. Now it can be pulled in by including asm/compat.h or
linux/compat.h.
Most of the copies are verbatim. compat_uid[32]_t had to be replaced by
__compat_uid[32]_t. compat_uptr_t had to be moved up before
compat_siginfo_t in asm/compat.h on a several architectures (tile already
had it moved up). compat_sigval_t had to be relocated from linux/compat.h
to asm/compat.h.

Register pfn_is_ram helper speed up reading /proc/vmcore in the kdump
kernel. See commit message of 997c136f51 ("fs/proc/vmcore.c: add hook
to read_from_oldmem() to check for non-ram pages") for details.
It makes use of a new hvmop HVMOP_get_mem_type which was introduced in
xen 4.2 (23298:26413986e6e0) and backported to 4.1.1.
The new function is currently only enabled for reading /proc/vmcore.
Later it will be used also for the kexec kernel. Since that requires
more changes in the generic kernel make it static for the time being.

The following patch adds perf_event support for the Xeon-Phi
PMU, as documented in the "Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor (codename:
Knights Corner) Performance Monitoring Units" manual.
Even though it is a co-processor, a Phi runs a full Linux
environment and can support performance counters.
This is just barebones support, it does not add support for
interesting new features such as the SPFLT intruction that
allows starting/stopping events without entering the kernel.
The PMU internally is just like that of an original Pentium, but
a "P6-like" MSR interface is provided. The interface is
different enough from a real P6 that it's not easy (or
practical) to re-use the code in perf_event_p6.c

Remove the quirk for the SBC FITPC. It seems ot have been
required when the default was kbd reboot, but no longer required
now that the default is acpi reboot. Furthermore, BIOS reboot no
longer works for this board as of 2.6.39 or any of the 3.x
kernels.

The correct syntax for gcc -x is "gcc -x assembler", not
"gcc -xassembler". Even though the latter happens to work, the former
is what is documented in the manual page and thus what gcc wrappers
such as icecream do expect.
This isn't a cosmetic change. The missing space prevents icecream from
recognizing compilation tasks it can't handle, leading to silent kernel
miscompilations.
Besides me, credits go to Michael Matz and Dirk Mueller for
investigating the miscompilation issue and tracking it down to this
incorrect -x parameter syntax.

Plumb the UAPI Kbuilds into the user header installation and checking system.
As the headers are split the entries will be transferred across from the old
Kbuild files to the UAPI Kbuild files.
The changes made in this commit are:
(1) Exported generated files (of which there are currently four) are moved to
uapi/ directories under the appropriate generated/ directory, thus we
get:
include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h
arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_32.h
arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_64.h
arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_x32.h
These paths were added to the build as -I flags in a previous patch.
(2) scripts/Makefile.headersinst is now given the UAPI path to install from
rather than the old path.
It then determines the old path from that and includes that Kbuild also
if it exists, thus permitting the headers to exist in either directory
during the changeover.
I also renamed the "install" variable to "installdir" as it refers to a
directory not the install program.
(3) scripts/headers_install.pl is altered to take a list of source file paths
instead of just their names so that the makefile can tell it exactly
where to find each file.
For the moment, files can be obtained from one of four places for each
output directory:
.../include/uapi/foo/
.../include/generated/uapi/foo/
.../include/foo/
.../include/generated/foo/
The non-UAPI paths will be dropped later.

Differentiate the generated UAPI and internal headers during generation such
that the UAPI headers can be installed elsewhere.
A later patch will use this to move the UAPI headers to:
arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/
to make them easier to handle.

Fix a build failure in the x86 insn_sanity program after the UAPI split. The
problem is that insn_sanity.c #includes arch/x86/lib/insn.c - which uses the
kernel string header. This leads to conflicts for various definitions against
the /usr/include/ headers.
linux/string.h can be replaced with the normal userspace string.h if __KERNEL__
is not specified.

Partition the header include path flags into two sets, one for kernelspace
builds and one for userspace builds.
Add the following directories to build after the ordinary include directories
so that #include will pick up the UAPI header directly if the kernel header
has been moved there.
The userspace set (represented by the USERINCLUDE make variable) contains:
-I $(srctree)/arch/$(hdr-arch)/include/uapi
-I arch/$(hdr-arch)/include/generated/uapi
-I $(srctree)/include/uapi
-I include/generated/uapi
-include $(srctree)/include/linux/kconfig.h
and the kernelspace set (represented by the LINUXINCLUDE make variable)
contains:
-I $(srctree)/arch/$(hdr-arch)/include
-I arch/$(hdr-arch)/include/generated
-I $(srctree)/include
-I include --- if not building in the source tree
plus everything in the USERINCLUDE set.
Then use USERINCLUDE in building the x86 boot code.

This fixes two issues that could cause incompatibility between
kernel versions:
- If a tracer uses SECCOMP_RET_TRACE to select a syscall number
higher than the largest known syscall, emulate the unknown
vsyscall by returning -ENOSYS. (This is unlikely to make a
noticeable difference on x86-64 due to the way the system call
entry works.)
- On x86-64 with vsyscall=emulate, skipped vsyscalls were buggy.
This updates the documentation accordingly.

- We need to test CF, not ZF, for a bit test with btl.
- We don't actually need to compute the existence of EFLAGS.ID,

0. 'idle RCU':
Adds RCU APIs that allow non-idle tasks to enter RCU idle mode and
provides x86 code to make use of them, allowing RCU to treat
user-mode execution as an extended quiescent state when the new
RCU_USER_QS kernel configuration parameter is specified. (Work is
in progress to port this to a few other architectures, but is not
part of this series.)
1. A fix for a latent bug that has been in RCU ever since the addition
of CPU stall warnings. This bug results in false-positive stall
warnings, but thus far only on embedded systems with severely
cut-down userspace configurations.
2. Further reductions in latency spikes for huge systems, along with
additional boot-time adaptation to the actual hardware.
This is a large change, as it moves RCU grace-period initialization
and cleanup, along with quiescent-state forcing, from softirq to a
kthread. However, it appears to be in quite good shape (famous
last words).
3. Updates to documentation and rcutorture, the latter category
including keeping statistics on CPU-hotplug latencies and fixing
some initialization-time races.
4. CPU-hotplug fixes and improvements.
5. Idle-loop fixes that were omitted on an earlier submission.
6. Miscellaneous fixes and improvements
In certain RCU configurations new kernel threads will show up (rcu_bh,
rcu_sched), showing RCU processing overhead.

32bit wrapper is lost on that; 64bit one is *not*, since
we need to arrange for full pt_regs on stack when we call
sys_execve() and we need to load callee-saved ones from
there afterwards.

memblocks, X86 also requires to flag the memory area to E820_RESERVED or
E820_ACPI in the e820 mappings to be able to io(re)map it later.

The ACPI BGRT driver accesses the BIOS logo image when it initializes.
However, ACPI 5.0 (which introduces the BGRT) recommends putting the
logo image in EFI boot services memory, so that the OS can reclaim that
memory. Production systems follow this recommendation, breaking the
ACPI BGRT driver.
Move the bulk of the BGRT code to run during a new EFI late
initialization phase, which occurs after switching EFI to virtual mode,
and after initializing ACPI, but before freeing boot services memory.
Copy the BIOS logo image to kernel memory at that point, and make it
accessible to the BGRT driver. Rework the existing ACPI BGRT driver to
act as a simple wrapper exposing that image (and the properties from the
BGRT) via sysfs.

The EFI initialization creates virtual mappings for EFI boot services
memory, so if a driver wants to access EFI boot services memory, it
cannot call ioremap itself; doing so will trip the WARN about mapping
RAM twice. Thus, a driver accessing EFI boot services memory must do so
via the existing mapping already created during EFI intiialization.
Since the EFI code already maintains a memory map for that memory, add a
function efi_lookup_mapped_addr to look up mappings in that memory map.

As TLB shootdown requests to other CPU cores are now using function call
interrupts, TLB shootdowns entry in /proc/interrupts is always shown as 0.
This behavior change was introduced by commit 52aec3308d ("x86/tlb:
replace INVALIDATE_TLB_VECTOR by CALL_FUNCTION_VECTOR").
This patch reverts TLB shootdowns entry in /proc/interrupts to count TLB
shootdowns separately from the other function call interrupts.

Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela,
ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version
into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS.
Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible.
To this end, I've defined three new config bools:
(*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC
Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic
mod_arch_specific struct.
(*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA
Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes
the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be
defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message.
(*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL
Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes
the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be
defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message.
Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are
two arches that do this.
With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced
with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file.
Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the
unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally.

The userspace part of UML uses the asm-offsets.h generator mechanism to
create definitions for UM_KERN_<LEVEL> that match the in-kernel
KERN_<LEVEL> constant definitions.
As of commit 04d2c8c83d ("printk: convert
the format for KERN_<LEVEL> to a 2 byte pattern"), KERN_<LEVEL> is no
longer expanded to the literal '"<LEVEL>"', but to '"\001" "LEVEL"', i.e.
it contains two parts.
However, the combo of DEFINE_STR() in
arch/x86/um/shared/sysdep/kernel-offsets.h and sed-y in Kbuild doesn't
support string literals consisting of multiple parts. Hence for all
UM_KERN_<LEVEL> definitions, only the SOH character is retained in the actual
definition, while the remainder ends up in the comment. E.g. in
include/generated/asm-offsets.h we get

instead of
#define UM_KERN_INFO "\001" "6" /* KERN_INFO */

- Move the mapping from UM_KERN_<LEVEL> to KERN_<LEVEL> from
arch/um/include/shared/common-offsets.h to
arch/um/include/shared/user.h, which is preincluded for all userspace
parts,
- Preinclude include/linux/kern_levels.h for all userspace parts, to
obtain the in-kernel KERN_<LEVEL> constant definitions. This doesn't
violate the kernel/userspace separation, as include/linux/kern_levels.h
is self-contained and doesn't expose any other kernel internals.
- Remove the now unused STR() and DEFINE_STR() macros.

The ACPI spec doesn't provide for a way for the bios to pass down
recommended thresholds to the OS on a _per-bank_ basis. This patch adds
a new boot option, which if passed, tells Linux to use CMCI thresholds
set by the bios.
As fail-safe, we initialize threshold to 1 if some banks have not been
initialized by the bios and warn the user.

There is no fundamental reason why we should switch SMEP and SMAP on
during early cpu initialization just to switch them off again. Now
with %eflags and %cr4 forced to be initialized to a clean state, we
only need the one-way enable. Also, make the functions inline to make
them (somewhat) harder to abuse.
This does mean that SMEP and SMAP do not get initialized anywhere near
as early. Even using early_param() instead of __setup() doesn't give
us control early enough to do this during the early cpu initialization
phase. This seems reasonable to me, because SMEP and SMAP should not
matter until we have userspace to protect ourselves from, but it does
potentially make it possible for a bug involving a "leak of
permissions to userspace" to get uncaught.

tarball that replaces the /lib -> /usr/lib symlink. Let's remove the

We already have a flag word to indicate the existence of MISC_ENABLES,
so use the same flag word to indicate existence of cr4 and EFER, and
always restore them if they exist. That way if something passes a
nonzero value when the value *should* be zero, we will still
initialize it.

%cr4 is supposed to reflect a set of features into which the operating
system is opting in. If the BIOS or bootloader leaks bits here, this
is not desirable. Consider a bootloader passing in %cr4.pae set to a
legacy paging kernel, for example -- it will not have any immediate
effect, but the kernel would crash when turning paging on.
A similar argument applies to %eflags, and since we have to look for
%eflags.id being settable we can use a sequence which clears %eflags
as a side effect.
Note that we already do this for x86-64.

do_notify_resume() may be called on irq or exception
exit. But at that time the exception has already called
rcu_user_enter() and the irq has already called rcu_irq_exit().
Since it can use RCU read side critical section, we must call
rcu_user_exit() before doing anything there. Then we must call
back rcu_user_enter() after this function because we know we are
going to userspace from there.
This complete support for userspace RCU extended quiescent state
in x86-64.

GAS in binutils(2.16.91) could not parse parentheses within
macro parameters unless fully parenthesized, and this is a
workaround to make old gas work without generating below errors:

With SMAP, the [f][x]rstor_checking() functions are no longer usable
for user-space pointers by applying a simple __force cast. Instead,
create new [f][x]rstor_user() functions which do the proper SMAP
magic.

There is no known reason for this option to be unavailable on other
archs than x86. They just need to call enable_sched_clock_irqtime()
if they have a sufficiently finegrained clock to make it working.
Move it to the general option and let the user choose between
it and pure tick based or virtual cputime accounting.
Note that virtual cputime accounting already performs a finegrained
irqtime accounting. CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING is a kind of middle ground
between tick and virtual based accounting. So CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING
and CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING are mutually exclusive choices.
