At present, the comment header in random.c makes no mention of
add_disk_randomness, and instead, suggests that disk activity adds to the
random pool by way of add_interrupt_randomness, which appears to not have
been the case since sometime prior to the existence of git, and even prior
to bitkeeper. Didn't look any further back. At least, as far as I can
tell, there are no storage drivers setting IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM, which is a
requirement for add_interrupt_randomness to trigger, so the only way for a
disk to contribute entropy is by way of add_disk_randomness. Update
comments accordingly, complete with special mention about solid state
drives being a crappy source of entropy (see e2e1a148bc for reference).

Request_region should be used with release_region, not release_resource.
This patch contains a number of changes, related to calls to request_region,
request_mem_region, and the associated error handling code.
1. For the call to request_region, the variable io_resource storing the
result is dropped. The call to release_resource at the end of the function
is changed to a call to release_region with the first two arguments of
request_region as its arguments. The same call to release_region is also
added to release_ipwireless.
2. The first call to request_mem_region is now tested and ret is set to
-EBUSY if the the call has failed. This call was associated with the
initialization of ipw->attr_memory. But the error handling code was
testing ipw->common_memory. The definition of release_ipwireless also
suggests that this call should be associated with ipw->common_memory, not
ipw->attr_memory.
3. The second call to request_mem_region is now tested and ret is
set to -EBUSY if the the call has failed.
4. The various gotos to the error handling code is adjusted so that there
is no need for ifs.
5. Return the value stored in the ret variable rather than -1.

Request_region should be used with release_region, not release_resource.
The local variable mem, storing the result of request_mem_region, is
dropped and instead the pointer res is stored in the drvdata field of the

release the region. The drvdata field is not used elsewhere.

from the TPM. The check of the response packet needs to consider that

TPM_GetCapability() result + 3 timeout indicators of type u32.

Some BIOSs (eg. the AMI BIOS on the Asus P4P800 motherboard) don't
initialise the GART address, and pcibios_assign_resources() can ignore it
because it can be marked as a host bridge (see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24392#c5 for details). This
was handled correctly up to 2.6.35, but the pci_enable_device() cleanup in
2.6.36 96576a9e1a ("agp: intel-agp: do not use PCI resources before
pci_enable_device()") means that the kernel tries to enable the GART
before assigning it an address; in such cases the GART overlaps with other
device assignments and ends up being disabled.
This patch fixes https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24392
Note that I imagine efficeon-agp.c probably has the same problem, but

This reverts commit f191f14407.
The AMD 751 and 761 chipsets are used on the UP1000, UP1100, and UP1500
OEM motherboards, but they neglect to do anything to make AGP work.
According to Ivan Kokshaysky:
There is quite fundamental conflict between the Alpha architecture and
x86 AGP implementation - Alpha is entirely cache coherent by design,
while x86 AGP is not (I mean native AGP DMA transactions, not a PCI over
AGP). There are no such things as non-cacheable mappings or software
support for cache flushing/invalidation on Alpha, so x86 AGP code won't
work on Nautilus.
So there's no point in allowing this driver to be configured on Alpha.

result, a quite large chunk of the patches changes all

implications about the underlying lock.
The only real change is the return value of console_trylock which is

As requested by Arnd Bergmann, the hvc drivers are now
moved to the drivers/tty/hvc/ directory. The virtio_console.c driver
was also moved, as it required the hvc_console.h file to be able to be
built, and it really is a hvc driver.

The newer drivers/gpio/cs5535-gpio.c replaces drivers/misc/cs5535_gpio.c.
The new driver has been in the tree for a little while, and has received
some testing; it's time to mark the old one as deprecated. I'm thinking
removal around 2.6.40 would be good, provided we're not missing critical
functionality in the newer driver.

This series aims to develop logging facility for enterprise use.
It is important to save kernel messages reliably on enterprise system
because they are helpful for diagnosing system.
This series add kmsg_dump() to the paths loosing kernel messages. The use
case is the following.
[Use case of reboot/poweroff/halt/emergency_restart]
My company has often experienced the followings in our support service.
- Customer's system suddenly reboots.
- Customers ask us to investigate the reason of the reboot.
We recognize the fact itself because boot messages remain in
/var/log/messages. However, we can't investigate the reason why the
system rebooted, because the last messages don't remain. And off course
we can't explain the reason.
We can solve above problem with this patch as follows.
Case1: reboot with command
- We can see "Restarting system with command:" or ""Restarting system.".
Case2: halt with command
- We can see "System halted.".
Case3: poweroff with command
- We can see " Power down.".
Case4: emergency_restart with sysrq.
- We can see "Sysrq:" outputted in __handle_sysrq().
Case5: emergency_restart with softdog.
- We can see "Initiating system reboot" in watchdog_fire().
So, we can distinguish the reason of reboot, poweroff, halt and emergency_restart.
If customer executed reboot command, you may think the customer should
know the fact. However, they often claim they don't execute the command
when they rebooted system by mistake.
No message remains on the current Linux kernel, so we can't show the proof
to the customer. This patch improves this situation.
This patch:
Alters mtdoops and ramoops to perform their actions only for
KMSG_DUMP_PANIC, KMSG_DUMP_OOPS and KMSG_DUMP_KEXEC because they would
like to log crashes only.

Fixed up conflicts in drivers/serial/apbuart.c with evil merge that
makes the code look fairly sane (unlike either side).
They are a handful of places in the code that register a die_notifier
as a catch all in case no claims the NMI. Unfortunately, they trigger
on events like DIE_NMI and DIE_NMI_IPI, which depending on when they
registered may collide with other handlers that have the ability to
determine if the NMI is theirs or not.
The function unknown_nmi_error() makes one last effort to walk the
die_chain when no one else has claimed the NMI before spitting out
messages that the NMI is unknown.
This is a better spot for these devices to execute any code without
colliding with the other handlers.
The two drivers modified are only compiled on x86 arches I believe, so
they shouldn't be affected by other arches that may not have
DIE_NMIUNKNOWN defined.

It has been reported that on at least one Nano CPU the xstore
instruction will write as many as 16 bytes of data to the output
buffer.
This causes memory corruption as we use rng->priv which is only
4-8 bytes long.
This patch fixes this by using an intermediate buffer on the stack
with at least 16 bytes and aligned to a 16-byte boundary.

The IPMI smi_watcher will be used to catch the IPMI interface as they
come or go. In order to communicate with the correct IPMI device, it
should be confirmed whether it is what we wanted especially on the
system with multiple IPMI devices. But the new_smi callback function
of smi_watcher provides very limited info(only the interface number
and dev pointer) and there is no detailed info about the low level
interface. For example: which mechansim registers the IPMI
interface(ACPI, PCI, DMI and so on).
This is to add one interface that can get more info of low-level IPMI
device. For example: the ACPI device handle will be returned for the
pnp_acpi IPMI device.

Some Lenovos have TPMs that require a quirk to function correctly. This can
be autodetected by checking whether the device has a _HID of INTC0102. This
is an invalid PNPid, and as such is discarded by the pnp layer - however
it's still present in the ACPI code, so we can pull it out that way. This
means that the quirk won't be automatically applied on non-ACPI systems,
but without ACPI we don't have any way to identify the chip anyway so I
don't think that's a great concern.

This still uses the agp functions to actually reinstate the mappings
(with a gross hack to make agp cooperate), but it wires everything
up correctly for the switchover.

Support more than just the "Misc Control" part of the northbridges.
Support more flags by turning "gart_supported" into a single bit flag
that is stored in a flags member. Clean up related code by using a set
of functions (amd_nb_num(), amd_nb_has_feature() and node_to_amd_nb())
instead of accessing the NB data structures directly. Reorder the
initialization code and put the GART flush words caching in a separate

The fix in commit 6b4e81db25 ("i8k: Tell gcc that *regs gets
clobbered") to work around the gcc miscompiling i8k.c to add "+m
(*regs)" caused register pressure problems and a build failure.
Changing the 'asm' statement to 'asm volatile' instead should prevent
that and works around the gcc bug as well, so we can remove the "+m".
[ Background on the gcc bug: a memory clobber fails to mark the function
the asm resides in as non-pure (aka "__attribute__((const))"), so if
the function does nothing else that triggers the non-pure logic, gcc
will think that that function has no side effects at all. As a result,
callers will be mis-compiled.
Adding the "+m" made gcc see that it's not a pure function, and so
does "asm volatile". The problem was never really the need to mark
"*regs" as changed, since the memory clobber did that part - the
problem was just a bug in the gcc "pure" function analysis - Linus ]

compiler was upgraded from gcc-4.4.4 to gcc-4.5.1 after which it didn't
work anymore, meaning the driver didn't load or gave total nonsensical

Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev
open, close, claim and release.
* blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions.
* bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open.
* open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and
the other way around, respectively.
* bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave
symlinks.
* open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get().
The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim
makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as
in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive
open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another
exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that,
* blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management.
@holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will
gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses.
* blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and
if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when
the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are
removed automatically.
* bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer
necessary and either made static or removed.
* bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder()
is no longer necessary and removed.
* open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev()
and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only()
test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get().
* open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to
blkdev_get().
Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put()
and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as
it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and
invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases.
open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup -
rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop
special features. Well, let's leave them for another day.
Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more
involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the
same.

Fix a long standing bug with per device locking.
Each device has an associated spinlock for synchronizing access to
hardware and state information with the ISR. A single hardware card has
one or more devices.
Bug: Non ISR code correctly acquires and releases the per device lock.
ISR incorrectly always acquires and releases the lock of the first device
on the card.
The decoupled and list based nature of the ISR and deferred processing
interaction allowed this to work in normal operation. Exceptional events
like an application forcing hardware shutdown, reset, or reconfiguration
while active can trigger the bug.
Fixed ISR to acquire and release the per device lock.
One exception is manipulation of the GPIO card resource which is global
and effectively owned by the first device of the card. Non-ISR access to
GPIO resource is changed to use lock of first device on card.

On VT-d supporting platforms the GGTT is allocated in a stolen mem
section separate from graphcis stolen mem. The GMCH register contains
a bitfield specifying the size of that region. Docs suggest that this
region can only be used for GGTT and PPGTT. Hence ensure that the
PPGTT is disabled and use the complete area for the GGTT.
Unfortunately the graphics core on G33/Pineview can't cope with really
large GTTs and the BIOS usually enables the maximum of 512MB. So
don't bother with maximizing the GTT on these platforms.

Clearing the HPET interrupt enable bit disables interrupt generation
but does not disable the timer, so the interrupt status bit will still
be set when the timer elapses. If another interrupt arrives before
the timer has been correctly programmed (due to some other device on
the same interrupt line, or CONFIG_DEBUG_SHIRQ), this results in an
extra unwanted interrupt event because the status bit is likely to be
set from comparator matches that happened before the device was opened.
Therefore, we have to ensure that the interrupt status bit is and
stays cleared until we actually program the timer.

When the initialization code in hpet finds a memory resource and does not
find an IRQ, it does not unmap the memory resource previously mapped.
There are buggy BIOSes which report resources exactly like this and what
is worse the memory region bases point to normal RAM. This normally would
not matter since the space is not touched. But when PAT is turned on,
ioremap causes the page to be uncached and sets this bit in page->flags.
Then when the page is about to be used by the allocator, it is reported
as:
BUG: Bad page state in process md5sum pfn:3ed00
page:ffffea0000dbd800 count:0 mapcount:0 mapping:(null) index:0x0
page flags: 0x20000001000000(uncached)
Pid: 7956, comm: md5sum Not tainted 2.6.34-12-desktop #1

In this particular case:
1) HPET returns 3ed00000 as memory region base, but it is not in
reserved ranges reported by the BIOS (excerpt):
BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 00000000af6cf000 (usable)
BIOS-e820: 00000000af6cf000 - 00000000afdcf000 (reserved)
2) there is no IRQ resource reported by HPET method. On the other
hand, the Intel HPET specs (1.0a) says (3.2.5.1):
_CRS (
// Report 1K of memory consumed by this Timer Block
memory range consumed
// Optional: only used if BIOS allocates Interrupts [1]
IRQs consumed
)
[1] For case where Timer Block is configured to consume IRQ0/IRQ8 AND
Legacy 8254/Legacy RTC hardware still exists, the device objects
associated with 8254 & RTC devices should not report IRQ0/IRQ8 as
"consumed resources".
So in theory we should check whether if it is the case and use those
interrupts instead.
Anyway the address reported by the BIOS here is bogus, so non-presence
of IRQ doesn't mean the "optional" part in point 2).
Since I got no reply previously, fix this by simply unmapping the space
when IRQ is not found and memory region was mapped previously. It would
be probably more safe to walk the resources again and unmap appropriately
depending on type. But as we now use only ioremap for both 2 memory
resource types, it is not necessarily needed right now.

Now, rw_verify_area() checsk f_pos is negative or not. And if negative,
returns -EINVAL.
But, some special files as /dev/(k)mem and /proc/<pid>/mem etc.. has
negative offsets. And we can't do any access via read/write to the
file(device).
So introduce FMODE_UNSIGNED_OFFSET to allow negative file offsets.

A notifier chain is called whenever the vt code modifies a terminal

The /dev/vcs* devices are used, amongst other things, by accessibility
applications such as BRLTTY to display the screen content onto refreshable
braille displays. Currently this is performed by constantly reading from
/dev/vcsa0 whether or not the screen content has changed. Given the
default braille refresh rate of 25 times per second, this easily qualifies
as the biggest source of wake-up events preventing laptops from entering
deeper power saving states.
To avoid this periodic polling, let's add support for select()/poll() and
SIGIO with the /dev/vcs* devices. The implemented semantic is to report
data availability whenever the corresponding vt has seen some update after
the last read() operation. The application still has to lseek() back
as usual in order to read() the new data.
Not to create unwanted overhead, the needed data structure is allocated
and the vt notification callback is registered only when the poll or
fasync method is invoked for the first time per file instance.

Vasiliy found that pci_disable_device is not called on fail paths in
mxser_probe. Actually, it is called from nowhere in the driver.
There are three changes needed:
1) don't use pseudo-generic mxser_release_res. Let's use it only from
ISA paths from now on. All the pci stuff is moved to probe and
remove PCI-related functions.
2) reorder fail-paths in the probe function so that it makes sense and
we can call them from the sequential code naturally (the further we
are the earlier label we go to).
3) add pci_disable_device both to mxser_probe and mxser_remove.
There is a nit of adding CONFIG_PCI ifdef to mxser_remove. it is
because this driver supports ISA-only compilations and it would choke
up on the newly added calls now.
