d04b35f808 perf symbols: Add nr_events to symbol_conf
Since symbol__alloc_hists need it, to avoid passing it around in many
functions have it in the symbol_conf struct.

fbe96f29ce perf tools: Make perf.data more self-descriptive (v8)
The goal of this patch is to include more information about the host
environment into the perf.data so it is more self-descriptive. Overtime,
profiles are captured on various machines and it becomes hard to track
what was recorded, on what machine and when.

This patch provides a way to solve this by extending the perf.data file
with basic information about the host machine. To add those extensions,
we leverage the feature bits capabilities of the perf.data format. The
change is backward compatible with existing perf.data files.

We define the following useful new extensions:
 - HEADER_HOSTNAME: the hostname
 - HEADER_OSRELEASE: the kernel release number
 - HEADER_ARCH: the hw architecture
 - HEADER_CPUDESC: generic CPU description
 - HEADER_NRCPUS: number of online/avail cpus
 - HEADER_CMDLINE: perf command line
 - HEADER_VERSION: perf version
 - HEADER_TOPOLOGY: cpu topology
 - HEADER_EVENT_DESC: full event description (attrs)
 - HEADER_CPUID: easy-to-parse low level CPU identication

The small granularity for the entries is to make it easier to extend
without breaking backward compatiblity. Many entries are provided as
ASCII strings.

Perf report/script have been modified to print the basic information as
easy-to-parse ASCII strings. Extended information about CPU and NUMA
topology may be requested with the -I option.

Thanks to David Ahern for reviewing and testing the many versions of
this patch.

81cce8de94 perf browsers: Add live mode to the hists, annotate browsers
This allows passing a timer to be run periodically, which will update
the hists tree that then gers refreshed on the screen, just like the
Live mode (symbol entries, annotation) we already have in 'perf top
--tui'.

Will be used by the new hist_entry/hists based 'top' tool.

b53af0f235 perf report: Fix stdio event name header printing
In the past we tried to avoid printing the name of the event when just
one event was found in the perf.data file, after some refactorings it
ended up not printing the event name if just one hist_entry was found in
one of the events.

Fix it by always printing the name of the event, even if just one is
found.

00894ce9b8 perf report: Use ui__warning in some more places
So that we get a proper warning in the TUI in cases like:

$ perf report --stdio -g fractal,0.5,caller --sort pid
Selected -g but no callchain data. Did you call 'perf record' without -g?
 $

The --stdio case is ok because it uses fprintf, ui__warning is needed to
figure out if --stdio or --tui is being used.

5d67be97f8 perf report/annotate/script: Add option to specify a CPU range
Add an option to perf report/annotate/script to specify which
CPUs to operate on. This enables us to take a single system wide
profile and analyse each CPU (or group of CPUs) in isolation.

This was useful when profiling a multiprocess workload where the
bottleneck was on one CPU but this was hidden in the overall
profile. Per process and per thread breakdowns didn't help
because multiple processes were running on each CPU and no
single process consumed an entire CPU.

The patch converts the list of CPUs returned by cpu_map__new
into a bitmap for fast lookup. I wanted to use -C to be
consistent with perf top/record/stat, but unfortunately perf
report already uses -C <comms>.

v2: Incorporate suggestions from David Ahern:
	- Added -c to perf script
	- Check that SAMPLE_CPU is set when -c is used
	- Update documentation

 v3: Create perf_session__cpu_bitmap()

d797fdc5c5 perf tools: Add inverted call graph report support.
Add "caller/callee" option to support inverted butterfly report,
in the inverted report (with caller option), the call graph start
from the callee's ancestor. Users can use such view to catch system's
performance bottleneck from a sysprof like view. Using this option
with specified sort order like pid gives us high level view of call
graph statistics.

Also add "-G" alias for inverted call graph.

ec80fde746 perf symbols: Handle /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
Perf uses /proc/modules to figure out where kernel modules are loaded.

With the advent of kptr_restrict, non root users get zeroes for all module
start addresses.

So check if kptr_restrict is non zero and don't generate the syntethic
PERF_RECORD_MMAP events for them.

Warn the user about it in perf record and in perf report.

In perf report the reference relocation symbol being zero means that
kptr_restrict was set, thus /proc/kallsyms has only zeroed addresses, so don't
use it to fixup symbol addresses when using a valid kallsyms (in the buildid
cache) or vmlinux (in the vmlinux path) build-id located automatically or
specified by the user.

Provide an explanation about it in 'perf report' if kernel samples were taken,
checking if a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms was found/specified.

Restricted /proc/kallsyms don't go to the buildid cache anymore.

Example:

 [acme@emilia ~]$ perf record -F 100000 sleep 1

WARNING: Kernel address maps (/proc/{kallsyms,modules}) are restricted, check
 /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict.

Samples in kernel functions may not be resolved if a suitable vmlinux file is
not found in the buildid cache or in the vmlinux path.

Samples in kernel modules won't be resolved at all.

If some relocation was applied (e.g. kexec) symbols may be misresolved even
with a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms file.

[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
 [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.005 MB perf.data (~231 samples) ]

check /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict before running 'perf record'.

9e69c21082 perf session: Pass evsel in event_ops->sample()
Resolving the sample->id to an evsel since the most advanced tools,
report and annotate, and the others will too when they evolve to
properly support multi-event perf.data files.

Good also because it does an extra validation, checking that the ID is
valid when present. When that is not the case, the overhead is just a
branch + function call (perf_evlist__id2evsel).

e248de331a perf tools: Improve support for sessions with multiple events
By creating an perf_evlist out of the attributes in the perf.data file
header, so that we can use evlists and evsels when reading recorded
sessions in addition to when we record sessions.

More work is needed to allow tools to allow the user to select which
events are wanted when browsing sessions, be it just one or a subset of
them, aggregated or showed at the same time but with different
indications on the UI to allow seeing workloads thru different views at
the same time.

But the overall goal/trend is to more uniformly use evsels and evlists.

1b3a0e9592 perf callchain: Feed callchains into a cursor
The callchains are fed with an array of a fixed size.
As a result we iterate over each callchains three times:

- 1st to resolve symbols
- 2nd to filter out context boundaries
- 3rd for the insertion into the tree

This also involves some pairs of memory allocation/deallocation
everytime we insert a callchain, for the filtered out array of
addresses and for the array of symbols that comes along.

Instead, feed the callchains through a linked list with persistent
allocations. It brings several pros like:

- Merge the 1st and 2nd iterations in one. That was possible before
but in a way that would involve allocating an array slightly taller
than necessary because we don't know in advance the number of context
boundaries to filter out.

- Much lesser allocations/deallocations. The linked list keeps
persistent empty entries for the next usages and is extendable at
will.

- Makes it easier for multiple sources of callchains to feed a
stacktrace together. This is deemed to pave the way for cfi based
callchains wherein traditional frame pointer based kernel
stacktraces will precede cfi based user ones, producing an overall
callchain which size is hardly predictable. This requirement
makes the static array obsolete and makes a linked list based
iterator a much more flexible fit.

Basic testing on a big perf file containing callchains (~ 176 MB)
has shown a throughput gain of about 11% with perf report.

21ef97f05a perf session: Fallback to unordered processing if no sample_id_all
If we are running the new perf on an old kernel without support for
sample_id_all, we should fall back to the old unordered processing of
events. If we didn't than we would *always* process events without
timestamps out of order, whether or not we hit a reordering race. In
other words, instead of there being a chance of not attributing samples
correctly, we would guarantee that samples would not be attributed.

While processing all events without timestamps before events with
timestamps may seem like an intuitive solution, it falls down as
PERF_RECORD_EXIT events would also be processed before any samples.
Even with a workaround for that case, samples before/after an exec would
not be attributed correctly.

This patch allows commands to indicate whether they need to fall back to
unordered processing, so that commands that do not care about timestamps
on every event will not be affected. If we do fallback, this will print
out a warning if report -D was invoked.

This patch adds the test in perf_session__new so that we only need to
test once per session. Commands that do not use an event_ops (such as
record and top) can simply pass NULL in it's place.

640c03ce83 perf session: Parse sample earlier
At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache
tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already
parsed.

This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the
identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu,
timestamp) just after before every event.

Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as
possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid
callchains, warning the user about it if it happens.

There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type,
that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be
removed.

108553e1f3 perf: Sync callchains with period based hits
Hists have their hits increased by the event period. And this
period based counting is the foundation of all the stats in
perf report.

But callchains still use the raw number of hits, without taking
the period into account. So when we compute the percentage,
absolute based percentages are totally broken, and relative ones
too in the first parent level. Because we pass the number of events
muliplied by their period as the total number of hits to the
callchain filtering, while callchains expect this number to be
the number of raw hits.

perf report -g graph was simply not working, showing no graph unless
the min percent was zero. And even there the percentage of the
branches was always 0. And may be fractal filtering was broken on
the first branch level too.

flat also was broken, but it was hidden because of other breakages.

Anyway fix this by counting using periods on callchains.

761844b9c6 perf report: Make -D print sampled CPU
It is useful to know on which CPU a sample was captured on.
The information is captured with perf record -R but it was
not printed out by perf report -D. This patch adds this.

When -R is not used, cpu is set to -1to indicate that
the CPU is unknown (it is not captured).

The hists__tty_browse_tree function was created with the loop to print

c82ee828aa perf report: Report number of events, not samples
Number of samples is meaningless after we switched to auto-freq, so
report the number of events, i.e. not the sum of the different periods,
but the number PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE emitted by the kernel.

While doing this I noticed that naming "count" to the sum of all the
event periods can be confusing, so rename it to .period, just like in
struct sample.data, so that we become more consistent.

This helps with the next step, that was to record in struct hist_entry
the number of sample events for each instance, we need that because we
use it to generate the number of events when applying filters to the
tree of hist entries like it is being done in the TUI report browser.

The events_stats.total field is too generic, rename it to .total_period,

sampling artifacts.

Ditto for events_stats.lost, that is the sum of all lost_event.lost

Looking at the users, builtin-sched.c can make use of these fields and

ef7b93a119 perf report: Librarize the annotation code and use it in the newt browser
Now we don't anymore use popen to run 'perf annotate' for the selected

in 'perf report' if we're using the newt browser, then we use this data
directly to do annotation.

Done this way we can actually traverse the objdump_line objects
directly, matching the addresses to the collected samples and colouring
them appropriately using lower level slang routines.

The new ui_browser class will be reused for the main, callchain aware,
histogram browser, when it will be made generic and don't assume that
the objects are always instances of the objdump_line class maintained

1c02c4d2e9 perf hist: Introduce hists class and move lots of methods to it
In cbbc79a we introduced support for multiple events by introducing a
new "event_stat_id" struct and then made several perf_session methods
receive a point to it instead of a pointer to perf_session, and kept the
event_stats and hists rb_tree in perf_session.

While working on the new newt based browser, I realised that it would be
better to introduce a new class, "hists" (short for "histograms"),
renaming the "event_stat_id" struct and the perf_session methods that
were really "hists" methods, as they manipulate only struct hists
members, not touching anything in the other perf_session members.

Other optimizations, such as calculating the maximum lenght of a symbol
name present in an hists instance will be possible as we add them,
avoiding a re-traversal just for finding that information.

The rationale for the name "hists" to replace "event_stat_id" is that we
may have multiple sets of hists for the same event_stat id, as, for
instance, the 'perf diff' tool has, so event stat id is not what
characterizes what this struct and the functions that manipulate it do.

454c407ec1 perf: add perf-inject builtin
Currently, perf 'live mode' writes build-ids at the end of the
session, which isn't actually useful for processing live mode events.

What would be better would be to have the build-ids sent before any of
the samples that reference them, which can be done by processing the
event stream and retrieving the build-ids on the first hit. Doing
that in perf-record itself, however, is off-limits.

This patch introduces perf-inject, which does the same job while
leaving perf-record untouched. Normal mode perf still records the
build-ids at the end of the session as it should, but for live mode,
perf-inject can be injected in between the record and report steps
e.g.:

perf record -o - ./hackbench 10 | perf inject -v -b | perf report -v -i -

perf-inject reads a perf-record event stream and repipes it to stdout.
At any point the processing code can inject other events into the
event stream - in this case build-ids (-b option) are read and
injected as needed into the event stream.

Build-ids are just the first user of perf-inject - potentially
anything that needs userspace processing to augment the trace stream
with additional information could make use of this facility.

c055564217 perf: Fix endianness argument compatibility with OPT_BOOLEAN() and introduce OPT_INCR()
Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a
bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the
manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and
incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a
PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool
and would therefore print out the usage information and
terminate.

This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool
datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was
intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was
passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR
with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is
currently the only such example of this).

I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true
C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that
they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to
bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints.
The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses
OPT_INCR instead of OPT_BOOLEAN.

5f4d3f8816 perf report: Add progress bars
For when we are processing the events and inserting the entries in the
browser.

Experimentation here: naming "ui_something" we may be treading into
creating a TUI/GUI set of routines that can then be implemented in terms
of multiple backends.

Also the time it takes for adding things to the "browser" takes, visually
(I guess I should do some profiling here ;-) ), more time than for
processing the events...

That means we probably need to create a custom hist_entry browser, so
that we reuse the structures we have in place instead of duplicating
them in newt.

But progress was made and at least we can see something while long files
are being loaded, that must be one of UI 101 bullet points :-)

301fde27c7 perf: Fix orphan callchain branches
Callchains have markers inside their capture to tell we
enter a context (kernel, user, ...).

Those are not displayed in the callchains but they are
incidentally an active part of the radix tree where
callchains are stored, just like any other address.

If we have the two following callchains:

addr1 -> addr2 -> user context -> addr3
addr1 -> addr2 -> user context -> addr4
addr1 -> addr2 -> addr 5

This is pretty common if addr1 and addr2 are part of an
interrupt path, addr3 and addr4 are user addresses and
addr5 is a kernel non interrupt path.

This will be stored as follows in the tree:

                   addr1
                   addr2
                   / \
                  / addr5
            user context
               / \
             addr3 addr4

But we ignore the context markers in the report, hence
the addr3 and addr4 will appear as orphan branches:

    |--28.30%-- hrtimer_interrupt
    | smp_apic_timer_interrupt
    | apic_timer_interrupt
    | | <------------- here, no parent!
    | | |
    | | |--11.11%-- 0x7fae7bccb875
    | | |
    | | |--11.11%-- 0xffffffffff60013b
    | | |
    | | |--11.11%-- __pthread_mutex_lock_internal
    | | |
    | | |--11.11%-- __errno_location

Fix this by removing the context markers when we process the
callchains to the tree.

f9224c5c94 perf report: Implement initial UI using newt
Newt has widespread availability and provides a rather simple
API as can be seen by the size of this patch.

The work needed to support it will benefit other frontends too.

In this initial patch it just checks if the output is a tty, if
not it falls back to the previous behaviour, also if
newt-devel/libnewt-dev is not installed the previous behaviour
is maintaned.

Pressing enter on a symbol will annotate it, ESC in the
annotation window will return to the report symbol list.

More work will be done to remove the special casing in
color_fprintf, stop using fmemopen/FILE in the printing of
hist_entries, etc.

Also the annotation doesn't need to be done via spawning "perf
annotate" and then browsing its output, we can do better by
calling directly the builtin-annotate.c functions, that would
then be moved to tools/perf/util/annotate.c and shared with perf
top, etc

But lets go by baby steps, this patch already improves perf
usability by allowing to quickly do annotations on symbols from
the report screen and provides a first experimentation with
libnewt/TUI integration of tools.

Tested on RHEL5 and Fedora12 X86_64 and on Debian PARISC64 to
browse a perf.data file collected on a Fedora12 x86_64 box.

So if you want to zoom into libc:

$ perf diff --dsos libc-2.10.1.so | head -8
    37.34% find [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal

     7.62% +2.00% find [.] _int_free
$

And if there were multiple commands using libc, it is also
possible to aggregate them all by using --sort symbol:

$ perf diff --dsos libc-2.10.1.so --sort symbol | head -8
    37.34% [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
    10.34% [.] __GI_memmove

     5.07% -1.00% [.] __GI_mempcpy
     7.62% +2.00% [.] _int_free
$

The displacement column now is off by default, to use it:

perf diff -m --dsos libc-2.10.1.so --sort symbol | head -8
    37.34% [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal

4aa6563641 perf session: Move kmaps to perf_session
There is still some more work to do to disentangle map creation
from DSO loading, but this happens only for the kernel, and for
the early adopters of perf diff, where this disentanglement
matters most, we'll be testing different kernels, so no problem
here.

Further clarification: right now we create the kernel maps for
the various modules and discontiguous kernel text maps when
loading the DSO, we should do it as a two step process, first
creating the maps, for multiple mappings with the same DSO
store, then doing the dso load just once, for the first hit on
one of the maps sharing this DSO backing store.

180f95e29a perf: Make common SAMPLE_EVENT parser
Currently, sample event data is parsed for each commands, and it
is assuming that the data is not including other data. (E.g.
timechart, trace, etc. can't parse the event if it has
PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN)

So, even if we record the superset data for multiple commands at

To fix it, this makes common sample event parser, and use it to
parse sample event correctly. (PERF_SAMPLE_READ is unsupported

1ed091c45a perf tools: Consolidate symbol resolving across all tools
Now we have a very high level routine for simple tools to
process IP sample events:

	int event__preprocess_sample(const event_t *self,
				     struct addr_location *al,
				     symbol_filter_t filter)

It receives the event itself and will insert new threads in the
global threads list and resolve the map and symbol, filling all
this info into the new addr_location struct, so that tools like
annotate and report can further process the event by creating
hist_entries in their specific way (with or without callgraphs,
etc).

It in turn uses the new next layer function:

void thread__find_addr_location(struct thread *self, u8 cpumode,
					enum map_type type, u64 addr,
					struct addr_location *al,
					symbol_filter_t filter)

This one will, given a thread (userspace or the kernel kthread
one), will find the given type (MAP__FUNCTION now, MAP__VARIABLE
too in the near future) at the given cpumode, taking vdsos into
account (userspace hit, but kernel symbol) and will fill all
these details in the addr_location given.

Tools that need a more compact API for plain function
resolution, like 'kmem', can use this other one:

struct symbol *thread__find_function(struct thread *self, u64 addr,
					     symbol_filter_t filter)

So, to resolve a kernel symbol, that is all the 'kmem' tool
needs, its just a matter of calling:

	sym = thread__find_function(kthread, addr, NULL);

The 'filter' parameter is needed because we do lazy
parsing/loading of ELF symtabs or /proc/kallsyms.

With this we remove more code duplication all around, which is
always good, huh? :-)

All those functions really don't need to receive offset + head,

c338aee853 perf symbols: Do lazy symtab loading for the kernel & modules too
Just like we do with the other DSOs. This also simplifies the
kernel_maps setup process, now all that the tools need to do is
to call kernel_maps__init and the maps for the modules and
kernel will be created, then, later, when
kernel_maps__find_symbol() is used, it will also call
maps__find_symbol that already checks if the symtab was loaded,
loading it if needed.

Now if one does 'perf top --hide_kernel_symbols' we won't pay
the price of loading the (many) symbols in /proc/kallsyms or
vmlinux.

a4fb581b15 perf tools: Bind callchains to the first sort dimension column
Currently, the callchains are displayed using a constant left
margin. So depending on the current sort dimension
configuration, callchains may appear to be well attached to the
first sort dimension column field which is mostly the case,

because these are right aligned.

This patch binds the callchain to the first letter in the first
column, whatever type of column it is (dso, comm, symbol).

af0a6fa463 perf tools: Fix missing top level callchain
While recursively printing the branches of each callchains, we
forget to display the root. It is never printed.

Say we have:

    symbol
    f1
    f2
     |
     -------- f3
     | f4
     |
     ---------f5
              f6

Actually we never see that, instead it displays:

    symbol
    |
    --------- f3
    | f4
    |
    --------- f5
              f6

However f1 is always the same than "symbol" and if we are
sorting by symbols first then "symbol", f1 and f2 will be well
aligned like in the above example, so displaying f1 looks
redundant here.

But if we are sorting by something else first (dso, comm,
etc...), displaying f1 doesn't look redundant but rather
necessary because the symbol is not well aligned anymore with
its callchain:

     comm dso symbol
     f1
     f2
     |
     --------- [...]

And we want the callchain to be obvious.
So we fix the bug by printing the root branch, but we also
filter its first entry if we are sorting by symbols first.

struct symbol was reduced by removing the ->module backpointer and
moving it (well now the map) to struct symbol_entry in perf top,
that is its only user right now.

The total linecount went down by ~500 lines.

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

83a0944fa9 perf: Enable more compiler warnings
Related to a shadowed variable bug fix Valdis Kletnieks noticed
that perf does not get built with -Wshadow, which could have
helped us avoid the bug.

So enable -Wshadow and also enable the following warnings on
perf builds, in addition to the already enabled -Wall -Wextra
-std=gnu99 warnings:

 -Wcast-align
 -Wformat=2
 -Wshadow
 -Winit-self
 -Wpacked
 -Wredundant-decls
 -Wstack-protector
 -Wstrict-aliasing=3
 -Wswitch-default
 -Wswitch-enum
 -Wno-system-headers
 -Wundef
 -Wvolatile-register-var
 -Wwrite-strings
 -Wbad-function-cast
 -Wmissing-declarations
 -Wmissing-prototypes
 -Wnested-externs
 -Wold-style-definition
 -Wstrict-prototypes
 -Wdeclaration-after-statement

And change/fix the perf code to build cleanly under GCC 4.3.2.

The list of warnings enablement is rather arbitrary: it's based
on my (quick) reading of the GCC manpages and trying them on
perf.

I categorized the warnings based on individually enabling them
and looking whether they trigger something in the perf build.
If i liked those warnings (i.e. if they trigger for something
that arguably could be improved) i enabled the warning.

If the warnings seemed to come from language laywers spamming
the build with tons of nuisance warnings i generally kept them
off. Most of the sign conversion related warnings were in
this category. (A second patch enabling some of the sign
warnings might be welcome - sign bugs can be nasty.)

I also kept warnings that seem to make sense from their manpage
description and which produced no actual warnings on our code
base. These warnings might still be turned off if they end up
being a nuisance.

I also left out a few warnings that are not supported in older
compilers.

[ Note that these changes might break the build on older
compilers i did not test, or on non-x86 architectures that
produce different warnings, so more testing would be welcome. ]

recorded via perf record -s. Previously we only displayed

I moved everything to utils/values.[ch] so that we may reuse
it in perf stat.

We get something like this now:

 # PID TID cache-misses cache-references
   4658 4659 495581 3238779

   4658 4663 499531 3243162

Then it'll be easy to add --pretty=raw to display a single line per thread/event.

By the way, -S was also used for --symbol... So I used -T/--thread here.

b1a88349c3 perf tools: callchain: Fix 'perf report' display to be callchain by default
If we recorded with -g option to record the callchain, right now
we require a -g option to perf report as well - and people reported
this as unnecessary complication: the user already specified -g
once, no need to require it a second time.

So if the recording includes call-chains, display the callchain by
default from perf report.

( The user can override this default using "-g none" option from
  perf report. )

1953287bfe perf tools: Fix call-chain cumul hit based sub-total (fractal mode)
The callchain fractal mode builds each new total hits in a new
branch of profiling by using the parent's hits of the current
branch plus the hits of the children.

This is wrong, the total hits of a branch should be made of the
sum of every children hits, we must ignore the parent hits in
this scope.

This patch also fixes another mistake with the hit counting.

Now the rates are correct.

7f453c24b9 perf_counter: PERF_SAMPLE_ID and inherited counters
Anton noted that for inherited counters the counter-id as provided by
PERF_SAMPLE_ID isn't mappable to the id found through PERF_RECORD_ID
because each inherited counter gets its own id.

His suggestion was to always return the parent counter id, since that
is the primary counter id as exposed. However, these inherited
counters have a unique identifier so that events like
PERF_EVENT_PERIOD and PERF_EVENT_THROTTLE can be specific about which
counter gets modified, which is important when trying to normalize the
sample streams.

This patch removes PERF_EVENT_PERIOD in favour of PERF_SAMPLE_PERIOD,
which is more useful anyway, since changing periods became a lot more
common than initially thought -- rendering PERF_EVENT_PERIOD the less
useful solution (also, PERF_SAMPLE_PERIOD reports the more accurate
value, since it reports the value used to trigger the overflow,
whereas PERF_EVENT_PERIOD simply reports the requested period changed,
which might only take effect on the next cycle).

This still leaves us PERF_EVENT_THROTTLE to consider, but since that
_should_ be a rare occurrence, and linking it to a primary id is the
most useful bit to diagnose the problem, we introduce a
PERF_SAMPLE_STREAM_ID, for those few cases where the full
reconstruction is important.

[Does change the ABI a little, but I see no other way out]

805d127d62 perf report: Add "Fractal" mode output - support callchains with relative overhead rate
The current callchain displays the overhead rates as absolute:
relative to the total overhead.

This patch provides relative overhead percentage, in which each

This provides a 'fractal' view of the call-chain profile: each

1e11fd82d2 perf_counter tools: Provide helper to print percents color
Among perf annotate, perf report and perf top, we can find the
common colored printing of percents according to the following
rules:

High overhead = > 5%, colored in red
Mid overhead = > 0.5%, colored in green
    Low overhead = < 0.5%, default color

Factorize these multiple checks in a single function named
percent_color_fprintf() and also provide a get_percent_color()
for sites which print percentages and other things at the same
time.

4eb3e4788b perf report: Add support for callchain graph output
Currently, the printing of callchains is done in a single
vertical level, this is the "flat" mode:

8.25% [k] copy_user_generic_string
             4.19%
                copy_user_generic_string
                generic_file_aio_read
                do_sync_read
                vfs_read
                sys_pread64
                system_call_fastpath
                pread64

This patch introduces a new "graph" mode which provides a
hierarchical output of factorized paths recursively sorted:

 8.25% [k] copy_user_generic_string
                |
                |--4.31%-- generic_file_aio_read
                | do_sync_read
                | vfs_read
                | |
                | |--4.19%-- sys_pread64
                | | system_call_fastpath
                | | pread64
                | |
                | --0.12%-- sys_read
                | system_call_fastpath
                | __read
                |
                |--3.24%-- generic_file_buffered_write
                | __generic_file_aio_write_nolock
                | generic_file_aio_write
                | do_sync_write
                | reiserfs_file_write
                | vfs_write
                | |
                | |--3.14%-- sys_pwrite64
                | | system_call_fastpath
                | | __pwrite64
                | |
                | --0.10%-- sys_write
[...]

The command line has then changed.

By providing the -c option, the callchain will output in the
flat mode by default.

But you can override it:

    perf report -c graph

or

    perf report -c flat

You can also pass the abreviated mode:

    perf report -c g

or

    perf report -c gra

will both make use of the graph mode.
