zstd_init(, comp_level = 0) initializes decompression part of API only
hat now consists of zstd_decompress_stream() function.
The perf.data PERF_RECORD_COMPRESSED records are decompressed using
zstd_decompress_stream() function into a linked list of mmaped memory
regions of mmap_comp_len size (struct decomp).
After decompression of one COMPRESSED record its content is iterated and
fetched for usual processing. The mmaped memory regions with
decompressed events are kept in the linked list till the tool process
termination.
When dumping raw records (e.g., perf report -D --header) file offsets of
events from compressed records are printed as zero.
Committer notes:
Since now we have support for processing PERF_RECORD_COMPRESSED, we see
none, in raw form, like we saw in the previous patch commiter notes,
they were decompressed into the usual PERF_RECORD_{FORK,MMAP,COMM,etc}
records, we only see the stats for those PERF_RECORD_COMPRESSED events,
and since I used the file generated in the commiter notes for the
previous patch, there they are, 2 compressed records:

Split from a larger patch, this only dumps PERF_RECORD_COMPRESSED as
unhandled, so that when we introduce the record part in the next patch,
we don't see unhandled events when using 'perf record -D'.
Changed it so that we dump the event if the handler is just a stub, i.e.
for the case where we don't have ZSTD linked but we're processing a
perf.data file generated by a tool with that linked.
Also when failing to decompress we can't just dump the uncompressed
event and return 0, we have to propagate the error.

An -ENOMEM error is not reported in the GTK GUI. Instead this error
message pops up on the screen:

The sample precentage is a bit low.....
The GUI always fails in the FINISHED_ROUND event (68) and does not
indicate the reason why.
When happened is the following. Perf report calls a lot of functions and
down deep when a FINISHED_ROUND event is processed, these functions are
called:
perf_session__process_event()
+ perf_session__process_user_event()
+ process_finished_round()
+ ordered_events__flush()
+ __ordered_events__flush()
+ do_flush()
+ ordered_events__deliver_event()
+ perf_session__deliver_event()

Now this functions runs out of memory and
returns -ENOMEM. This is reported all the way up
until function
perf_session__process_event() returns to its caller, where -ENOMEM is
changed to -EINVAL and processing stops:

bpf_prog_info contains information necessary to annotate bpf programs.
This patch saves bpf_prog_info for bpf programs loaded in the system.
Some big picture of the next few patches:
To fully annotate BPF programs with source code mapping, 4 different
informations are needed:
1) PERF_RECORD_KSYMBOL
2) PERF_RECORD_BPF_EVENT
3) bpf_prog_info
4) btf
Before this set, 1) and 2) in the list are already saved to perf.data
file. For BPF programs that are already loaded before perf run, 1) and 2)
are synthesized by perf_event__synthesize_bpf_events(). For short living
BPF programs, 1) and 2) are generated by kernel.
This set handles 3) and 4) from the list. Again, it is necessary to handle
existing BPF program and short living program separately.
This patch handles 3) for exising BPF programs while synthesizing 1) and
2) in perf_event__synthesize_bpf_events(). These data are stored in
perf_env. The next patch saves these data from perf_env to perf.data as
headers.
Similarly, the two patches after the next saves 4) of existing BPF
programs to perf_env and perf.data.
Another patch later will handle 3) and 4) for short living BPF programs
by monitoring 1) and 2) in a dedicate thread.

The caller needs to set 'struct perf_data::is_dir flag and the path will
be treated as a directory.
The 'struct perf_data::file' is initialized and open as 'path/header'
file.
Add a check to the direcory interface functions to check the is_dir flag.

We can't call perf_data__close and subsequently perf_session__delete,
because it will call perf_data__close again and cause double free for
data->file.path.
$ perf report -i .
incompatible file format (rerun with -v to learn more)

In fact we don't need to call perf_data__close at all, because at the
time the got out_close is reached, session->data is already initialized,
so the perf_data__close call will be triggered from
perf_session__delete.

This patch adds basic handling of PERF_RECORD_BPF_EVENT. Tracking of
PERF_RECORD_BPF_EVENT is OFF by default. Option --bpf-event is added to
turn it on.
Committer notes:
Add dummy machine__process_bpf_event() variant that returns zero for
systems without HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT, such as Alpine Linux, unbreaking
the build in such systems.
Remove the needless include <machine.h> from bpf->event.h, provide just
forward declarations for the structs and unions in the parameters, to
reduce compilation time and needless rebuilds when machine.h gets
changed.

should emit a warning telling that the kernel has no such feature, but this can

This patch handles PERF_RECORD_KSYMBOL in perf record/report.
Specifically, map and symbol are created for ksymbol register, and
removed for ksymbol unregister.
This patch also sets perf_event_attr.ksymbol properly. The flag is ON by
default.

The number in brackets is the offset into the raw data field of the
sample.
New functions trace_event_sample_raw__init() and s390_sample_raw() are
introduced in the code path to enable interpretation on non s390
platforms. This event bc000 attached raw data is generated only on s390
platform. Correct display on other platforms requires correct endianness
handling.
Committer notes:
Added a init function that sets up a evlist function pointer to avoid
repeated tests on evlist->env and calls to perf_env__name() that
involves normalizing, etc, for each PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE.
Removed needless __maybe_unused from the trace_event_raw()
prototype in session.h, move it to be an static function in evlist.
The 'offset' variable is a size_t, not an u64, fix it to avoid this on
some arches:

Add a comment to perf_session__register_idle_thread() to bring attention to
a pitfall with the idle task thread structure. The pitfall is that there
should really be a 'struct thread' for the idle task of each cpu, but there
is only one that can have pid == tid == 0.

Some architectures have a single address space for kernel and user
addresses, which makes it possible to determine if an address is in
kernel space or user space. Some don't, e.g.: sparc.
Cache that info in perf_env so that, for instance, code needing to
fallback failed symbol lookups at the kernel space in single address
space arches can lookup at userspace.

Its common to have the (evsel->attr.sample_type & PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN),
so add an evsel__has_callchain(evsel) helper.
This will actually get more uses as we check that instead of
symbol_conf.use_callchain in places where that produces the same result
but makes this decision to be more fine grained, per evsel.

Remove the split of symbol tables for data (MAP__VARIABLE) and for
functions (MAP__FUNCTION), its unneeded and there were various places
doing two lookups to find a symbol, so simplify this.
We still will consider only the symbols that matched the filters in
place, i.e. see the (elf_(sec,sym)|symbol_type)__filter() routines in
the patch, just so that we consider only the same symbols as before,
to reduce the possibility of regressions.
All the tests on 50-something build environments, in varios versions
of lots of distros and cross build environments were performed without
build regressions, as usual with all pull requests the other tests were
also performed: 'perf test' and 'make -C tools/perf build-test'.
Also this was done at a great granularity so that regressions can be
bisected more easily.

Commit (93d10af26b perf tools: Optimize sample parsing for ordered
events) breaks intelPT trace decoding by invariably returning an error
if the event type isn't a PERF_SAMPLE_TIME.
With this patch the timestamp is initialised and processing is allowed
to continue if the error returned by function
perf_evlist__parse_sample_timestamp() is not a fault.

Currently when using ordered events we parse the sample twice (the
perf_evlist__parse_sample function). Once before we queue the sample for
sorting:
perf_session__process_event

And then when we deliver the sorted sample:

We can skip the initial full sample parsing by using
perf_evlist__parse_sample_timestamp function, which got introduced
earlier. The new path looks like:

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Thomas reported that 'perf buildid-list' gets a SEGFAULT due to NULL
pointer deref when he ran it on a data with namespace events. It was
because the buildid_id__mark_dso_hit_ops lacks the namespace event
handler and perf_too__fill_default() didn't set it.

It is only when one asks for checking what of those entries actually had
samples, i.e. when we use either -H or --with-hits, that we will process
all the PERF_RECORD_ events, and since tools/perf/builtin-buildid-list.c
neither explicitely set a perf_tool.namespaces() callback nor the
default stub was set that we end up, when processing a
PERF_RECORD_NAMESPACE record, causing a SEGFAULT:

Add header record types to pipe-mode, reusing the functions
used in file-mode and leveraging the new struct feat_fd.
For alignment, check that synthesized events don't exceed
pagesize.
Add the perf_event__synthesize_feature event call back to
process the new header records.

__perf_session__process_pipe_events reuses the same memory buffer to
process all events in the pipe.
When reordering is needed (e.g. -b option), events are not immediately
flushed, but kept around until reordering is possible, causing
memory corruption.
The problem is usually observed by a "Unknown sample error" output. It
can easily be reproduced by:
perf record -o - noploop | perf inject -b > output

This patch decodes the 'partial' flag in AUX records and prints
a warning to the user, so that they don't have to guess why their
PT traces contain gaps (or missing altogether):

AUX data had gaps in it 8 times out of 8!
Are you running a KVM guest in the background?
Trying to be even more helpful, we will detect if the user's kvm driver sets up
exclusive VMX root mode for the entire lifespan of the kvm process:
Reloading kvm_intel module with vmm_exclusive=0
will reduce the gaps to only guest's timeslices.
Note however, that you'll still have gaps in cpu-wide traces even with
vmm_exclusive=0, but the number of gaps will be below 100% (as opposed to the
above example).
Currently this is the only reason for partial records.

Introduce a new option to record PERF_RECORD_NAMESPACES events emitted
by the kernel when fork, clone, setns or unshare are invoked. And update
perf-record documentation with the new option to record namespace
events.
Committer notes:
Combined it with a later patch to allow printing it via 'perf report -D'
and be able to test the feature introduced in this patch. Had to move
here also perf_ns__name(), that was introduced in another later patch.

The struct branch_stack->branch_stack.cycles field is a u64 :16

If write_backward attribute is set, records are written into kernel
ring buffer from end to beginning, but read from beginning to end.
To avoid 'XX out of order events recorded' warning message (timestamps
of records is in reverse order when using write_backward), suppress the
warning message if write_backward is selected by at lease one event.

ordered_events__free() leaves linked lists and timestamps not cleared,
so unable to be reused after ordered_events__free(). Which is inconvenient
after 'perf record' supports generating multiple perf.data output and
process build-ids for each of them.

The fprintf_sym() and fprintf_callchain() methods now allow users to
change the existing behaviour of showing "[unknown]" as the name of
unresolved symbols to instead show "[0x123456]", i.e. its address.
The current patch doesn't change tools to use this facility, the results
from 'perf trace' and 'perf script' cotinue like:

As it receives a FILE, and its more than just the IP, which can even be
requested not to be printed.
For consistency with other similar methods in tools/perf/, name it as
perf_evsel__fprintf_sym() and make it return the number of bytes
printed, just like 'fprintf(3)'

Intel PT uses the time members from the perf_event_mmap_page to convert
between TSC and perf time.
Due to a lack of foresight when Intel PT was implemented, those time
members were recorded in the (implementation dependent) AUXTRACE_INFO
event, the structure of which is generally inaccessible outside of the
Intel PT decoder. However now the conversion between TSC and perf time
is needed when processing a jitdump file when Intel PT has been used for
tracing.
So add a user event to record the time members. 'perf record' will
synthesize the event if the information is available. And session
processing will put a copy of the event on the session so that tools
like 'perf inject' can easily access it.

While recording guest samples in host using perf kvm record, it will
populate unprocessable sample error, though samples will be recorded
properly. While generating report using perf kvm report, no samples will
be processed and same error will populate. We have seen this behaviour
with upstream perf(4.4-rc3) on x86 and ppc64 hardware.
Reason behind this failure is, when it tries to fetch machine from
rb_tree of machines, it fails. As a part of tracing a bug, we figured
out that this code was incorrectly refactored in commit 54245fdc35
("perf session: Remove wrappers to machines__find").
This patch will change the functionality such that if it can't fetch
machine in first trial, it will create one node of machine and add that to
rb_tree. So next time when it tries to fetch same machine from rb_tree,
it won't fail. Actually it was the case before refactoring of code in
aforementioned commit.
This patch is generated from acme perf/core branch.

It'll serve as a base event for additional event attributes details,
that are not part of the attr event.
At the moment this event is just a dummy one without any specific
functionality. The type value will distinguish the update event details.
It'll come in the following patches.
The idea for this event is to be extensible for any update that the
event might need in the future.

Adding the cpu_map event to pass/store cpu maps as data in
a pipe/perf.data.
We store maps in 2 formats:
- list of cpus
- mask of cpus
The format that takes less space is selected transparently in the
following patch.
The interface is made generic, so we could add the cpumap event data
into another event in the following patches.

Note that since the thread was already inserted to the session
list, it will be released when the session is released.
Also, in perf_session__register_idle_thread() failure path,
the thread should be put before returning.
Refcnt debugger shows that the perf_session__register_idle_thread
gets the returned thread, but the caller (__cmd_top) does not
put the returned idle thread.

If a session contains no events, we can get stuck in an infinite loop in
__perf_session__process_events, with a non-zero file_size and data_offset, but
a zero data_size.
In this case, we can mmap the entirety of the file (consisting of the file and
attribute headers), and fetch_mmaped_event will correctly refuse to read any
(unmapped and non-existent) event headers. This causes
__perf_session__process_events to unmap the file and retry with the exact same
parameters, getting stuck in an infinite loop.
This has been observed to result in an exit-time hang when counting
rare/unschedulable events with perf record, and can be triggered artificially
with the script below:

To avoid this, have __perf_session__process_events bail out early when
the file has no data (i.e. it has no events).
Commiter note:
I only managed to reproduce this when setting
/proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict to '1' and changing the code to
purposefully not process any samples and no synthesized samples, i.e.
kptr_restrict prevents 'record' from synthesizing the kernel mmaps for
vmlinux + modules and since it is a workload started from perf, we don't
synthesize mmap/comm records for existing threads.
Adrian Hunter managed to reproduce it in his environment tho.

The 'struct machine' represents the machine where the samples were/are
being collected, and we also have a 'struct perf_env' with extra details
about such machine, that we were collecting at 'perf.data' creation time
but we also needed when no perf.data file is being used, such as in
'perf top'.
So, get those structs closer together, as they provide a bigger picture
of the sample's environment.
In 'perf session', when the file argument is NULL, we can assume that
the tool is sampling the running machine, so point machine->env to
the global put in place in previous patches, while set it to the
perf_header.env one when reading from a file.
This paves the way for machine->env to be used in
perf_event__preprocess_sample to populate addr_location.socket.

This patch stores the cpu socket_id and core_id in a perf.data header,
and reads them into the perf_env struct when processing perf.data files.
The changes modifies the CPU_TOPOLOGY section, making sure it is
backward/forward compatible.
The patch checks the section size before reading the core and socket ids.
It never reads data crossing the section boundary. An old perf binary
without this patch can also correctly read the perf.data from a new perf
with this patch.
Because the new info is added at the end of the cpu_topology section, an
old perf tool ignores the extra data.

1. New perf with this patch read perf.data from an old perf without the

cycles is a new branch_info field available on some CPUs that indicates
the time deltas between branches in the LBR.
Add a sort key and output code for the cycles to allow to display the
basic block cycles individually in perf report.
We also pass in the cycles for weight when LBRs are processed, which
allows to get global and local weight, to get an estimate of the total
cost.
And also print the cycles information for perf report -D. I also added
printing for the previously missing LBR flags (mispredict etc.)

The semantic associated in tools/perf/ with foo__delete(instance) is to
release all resources referenced by 'instance' members and then release
the memory for 'instance' itself.
The perf_session_env__delete() function isn't doing this, it just does
the first part, but the space used by 'instance' itself isn't freed, as
it is embedded in a larger structure, that will be freed at other stage.
For these cases we se foo__exit(), i.e. the usage is:
void foo__delete(foo)
{
if (foo) {
foo__exit(foo);
free(foo);
}
}
But when we have something like:
struct bar {
struct foo foo;
. . .
}
Then we can't really call foo__delete(&bar.foo), we must have this
instead:
void bar__exit(bar)
{
foo__exit(&bar.foo);
/* free other bar-> resources */
}
void bar__delete(bar)
{
if (bar) {
bar__exit(bar);
free(bar);
}
}
So just rename perf_session_env__delete() to perf_session_env__exit().

Support processing of PERF_RECORD_SWITCH events and
PERF_RECORD_SWITCH_CPU_WIDE events. There is a single
tools callback for them both so that the tool must
check the event type before using the extra members
in PERF_RECORD_SWITCH_CPU_WIDE.
There is still no way to select the events, though.
That is added in a subsequest patch.
