Revert changes to convert to ->poll_mask() and aio IOCB_CMD_POLL
The poll() changes were not well thought out, and completely unexplained. They also caused a huge performance regression, because "->poll()" was no longer a trivial file operation that just called down to the underlying file operations, but instead did at least two indirect calls. Indirect calls are sadly slow now with the Spectre mitigation, but the performance problem could at least be largely mitigated by changing the "->get_poll_head()" operation to just have a per-file-descriptor pointer to the poll head instead. That gets rid of one of the new indirections. But that doesn't fix the new complexity that is completely unwarranted for the regular case. The (undocumented) reason for the poll() changes was some alleged AIO poll race fixing, but we don't make the common case slower and more complex for some uncommon special case, so this all really needs way more explanations and most likely a fundamental redesign. [ This revert is a revert of about 30 different commits, not reverted individually because that would just be unnecessarily messy - Linus ] Cc: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

skbuff: preserve sock reference when scrubbing the skb.
The sock reference is lost when scrubbing the packet and that breaks TSQ (TCP Small Queues) and XPS (Transmit Packet Steering) causing performance impacts of about 50% in a single TCP stream when crossing network namespaces. XPS breaks because the queue mapping stored in the socket is not available, so another random queue might be selected when the stack needs to transmit something like a TCP ACK, or TCP Retransmissions. That causes packet re-ordering and/or performance issues. TSQ breaks because it orphans the packet while it is still in the host, so packets are queued contributing to the buffer bloat problem. Preserving the sock reference fixes both issues. The socket is orphaned anyways in the receiving path before any relevant action and on TX side the netfilter checks if the reference is local before use it. Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dtor/input
Pull input updates from Dmitry Torokhov: - the main change is a fix for my brain-dead patch to PS/2 button reporting for some protocols that made it in 4.17 - there is a new driver for Spreadtum vibrator that I intended to send during merge window but ended up not sending the 2nd pull request. Given that this is a brand new driver we should not see regressions here - a fixup to Elantech PS/2 driver to avoid decoding errors on Thinkpad P52 - addition of few more ACPI IDs for Silead and Elan drivers - RMI4 is switched to using IRQ domain code instead of rolling its own implementation * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dtor/input: Input: psmouse - fix button reporting for basic protocols Input: xpad - fix GPD Win 2 controller name Input: elan_i2c_smbus - fix more potential stack buffer overflows Input: elan_i2c - add ELAN0618 (Lenovo v330 15IKB) ACPI ID Input: elantech - fix V4 report decoding for module with middle key Input: elantech - enable middle button of touchpads on ThinkPad P52 Input: do not assign new tracking ID when changing tool type Input: make input_report_slot_state() return boolean Input: synaptics-rmi4 - fix axis-swap behavior Input: synaptics-rmi4 - fix the error return code in rmi_probe_interrupts() Input: synaptics-rmi4 - convert irq distribution to irq_domain Input: silead - add MSSL0002 ACPI HID Input: goldfish_events - fix checkpatch warnings Input: add Spreadtrum vibrator driver |

dt-bindings: soc: qcom: Fix default clock-freq for qcom,geni-i2c
In an early version of the I2C patch that was posted to the list the default I2C frequency (if none was specified) was 400 kHz. There was debate on the list and we decided that it would be more consistent with the rest of i2c if we defaulted to 100 kHz. ...but we never updated the bindings. Let's fix this. NOTE: since the i2c driver itself hasn't actually landed yet and the SoC here is very new it seems terribly unlikely that anyone was relying on the old 400 kHz number, so I'll assume this is an OK "incompatible" device tree change. Documentation: e1000: Fix docs build error
Recent patch updated e1000 docs to rst format. Docs build (`make
htmldocs`) is currently failing due to this file with error:
(SEVERE/4) Unexpected section title.
This is because a section of the file is indented 2 spaces. Build error
can be cleared by aligning the text with column 0. While we are changing
these lines we can make sure line length does not exceed 72, that
newlines following headings are uniform, and that full stops are
followed by two spaces.
Align text with column 0, limit line length to 72, ensure two spaces
follow all full stops, ensure uniform use of newlines after heading.

RISC-V Updates for the 4.18 Merge Window
This tag contains some small RISC-V updates I'd like to target for 4.18. They are all fairly small this time. Here's a short summary, there's more info in the commits/merges. * A fix to __clear_user to respect the passed arguments. * Enough support for the perf subsystem to work with RISC-V's ISA defined performance counters. * Support for sparse and cleanups suggested by it. * Support for R_RISCV_32 (a relocation, not the 32-bit ISA). * Some MAINTAINERS cleanups. * The addition of CONFIG_HVC_RISCV_SBI to our defconfig, as it's always present. I've given these a simple build+boot test. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJHBAABCAAxFiEEAM520YNJYN/OiG3470yhUCzLq0EFAlsezeQTHHBhbG1lckBk YWJiZWx0LmNvbQAKCRDvTKFQLMurQSjWD/999J5HKkHQfHJi4/RQh0SEFNnRv32U 1O7zwqA5PkeoxWqq1y+dKcPGwZTZncwWp8yn8xipVYTYmYgGNZj9CYdEYkO119y5 OVcyUZdHlSdXgKkpVDJ0+MrZ60LY6tS66b6oJqQKmB/N4rYvu5L6ctRtyHRQe4nb rXNVbnaouiwrFJs9iZaCyaaGAGXKg81C5xCvvr8P0CYzVD4Jx+AmD6c7GohGWJS3 PLttEsmPaiaV9pzWK18yeFLaIgAqNEo2/s7/QsR1sHo4dUEJyFu9nMHvmjlJucCu imrkRwlhsCKxa4ob9D6UPh0qBXDmbSQA1U6M9RKY1jdt7Gul5eMuZIz2r/45752D z3YCITgTih2dzWO0zw4GCicCcJoD39IVTrsRCIqxF7jmAfBV8s/U+irMjEMkYhz6 wKVM9L3/6Z4bPAEztqKMjSw1/nNSavyn6wWACYIj5SDtFqNkvxwSahg1nGTuuoNx JqRa0r+lxsbunSwpEVtRROLYE3ZYa/KPrKhKEr+7vkiPlNNv82TZ5T/wkObhVfKp S6tZ0/Wb0tchm//LurfLAOV4aZxDlOLfukZ3eSdgBqSfILA3T98zS9FpuCmjiUfG 6S5GdNvjc3jLLZvPwtofIZmKUSpRSj545J1RRkEcgoEFjXdzxOWFLETsIOIt4nFf 7Nwjw/Th1hzuyQ== =D+sb -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'riscv-for-linus-4.18-merge_window' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/palmer/riscv-linux Pull RISC-V updates from Palmer Dabbelt: "This contains some small RISC-V updates I'd like to target for 4.18. docs: can.rst: fix a footnote reference
As stated at: http://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/master/usage/restructuredtext/basics.html#footnotes A footnote should contain either a number, a reference or an auto number, e. g.: [1], [#f1] or [#]. While using [*] accidentaly works for html, it fails for other document outputs. In particular, it causes an error with LaTeX output, causing all books after networking to not be built. dma-mapping: move all DMA mapping code to kernel/dma
Currently the code is split over various files with dma- prefixes in the lib/ and drives/base directories, and the number of files keeps growing. Move them into a single directory to keep the code together and remove the file name prefixes. To match the irq infrastructure this directory is placed under the kernel/ directory. Kbuild: rename CC_STACKPROTECTOR[_STRONG] config variables
The changes to automatically test for working stack protector compiler support in the Kconfig files removed the special STACKPROTECTOR_AUTO option that picked the strongest stack protector that the compiler supported. That was all a nice cleanup - it makes no sense to have the AUTO case now that the Kconfig phase can just determine the compiler support directly. HOWEVER. It also meant that doing "make oldconfig" would now _disable_ the strong stackprotector if you had AUTO enabled, because in a legacy config file, the sane stack protector configuration would look like CONFIG_HAVE_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y # CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_NONE is not set # CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_REGULAR is not set # CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG is not set CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_AUTO=y and when you ran this through "make oldconfig" with the Kbuild changes, it would ask you about the regular CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR (that had been renamed from CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_REGULAR to just CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR), but it would think that the STRONG version used to be disabled (because it was really enabled by AUTO), and would disable it in the new config, resulting in: CONFIG_HAVE_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y CONFIG_CC_HAS_STACKPROTECTOR_NONE=y CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y # CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG is not set CONFIG_CC_HAS_SANE_STACKPROTECTOR=y That's dangerously subtle - people could suddenly find themselves with the weaker stack protector setup without even realizing. The solution here is to just rename not just the old RECULAR stack protector option, but also the strong one. This does that by just removing the CC_ prefix entirely for the user choices, because it really is not about the compiler support (the compiler support now instead automatially impacts _visibility_ of the options to users). This results in "make oldconfig" actually asking the user for their choice, so that we don't have any silent subtle security model changes. The end result would generally look like this: CONFIG_HAVE_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y CONFIG_CC_HAS_STACKPROTECTOR_NONE=y CONFIG_STACKPROTECTOR=y CONFIG_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG=y CONFIG_CC_HAS_SANE_STACKPROTECTOR=y where the "CC_" versions really are about internal compiler infrastructure, not the user selections. ARM: SoC: late updates
This is a branch with a few merge requests that either came in late, or took a while longer for us to review and merge than usual and thus cut it a bit close to the merge window. We stage them in a separate branch and if things look good, we still send them up -- and that's the case here. This is mostly DT additions for Renesas platforms, adding IP block descriptions for existing and new SoCs. There are also some driver updates for Qualcomm platforms for SMEM/QMI and GENI, which is their generalized serial protocol interface. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJDBAABCAAtFiEElf+HevZ4QCAJmMQ+jBrnPN6EHHcFAlsfCVIPHG9sb2ZAbGl4 b20ubmV0AAoJEIwa5zzehBx3KOcP/3O2+igstXt5rhemITdyi8rHkrIHPgetf25e ISBQzYrQOHV21SqT4le/Gk2CCQ6iX5Nv2DYoIrCzFWi/4DoDxXvryczQLla02Nru i8fcuxae7aFGW7/97G1+cATGPwuBLPiKXs6Wj01sKHeLBja5Det7eoXuHag7Y/Lo 4ls9wNZybMdlCcGm6+ULdj+XUdRyYUhOQQYvnPm2Q8hEkM+AiwLOBJTFwef9P5ad mX37kPDfwCxYwQXgZB1RkK/oJu0G2mTZXmGH5o+s+9yAyAupCQhmHGOrt3mlOf7j tLRlSgarJlO/QGIpJmDuCcxt3msD3OMd2dPbdgwojdpvycOU8EVWYLmCRpyIWQXv DCv9A9Gp4KlJnwxheVegBtilRA1aKsGuarWq6yeyOFt8N23Bgg/IjYKI9JF5+hPD M4q1oVAbUlfWb79rEc+TB0d7euREBkNn4TzzKMSOyP3eGUrXR0WUlq2A2VLxgIJo cx/ufY7CwvRgV+VxfhRbca+FmwDnu7uqzwLe73Ys2hnsuv8hXEtc+vSybqKqxVeU nHpWAqwaWhijlJiGq722vPo8avrLwjsxRwimogvijtesz9ZlTqrGtjkg61+eN2h8 eeuyRAsMUfVRiKuL3W+q4s0rzIauormnKsvRScKVyNFuiJfrfYb1odLoDGaOV/9G dQ7hA7TW =RUL0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'armsoc-late' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm/arm-soc Pull ARM SoC late updates from Olof Johansson: "This is a branch with a few merge requests that either came in late, or took a while longer for us to review and merge than usual and thus cut it a bit close to the merge window. ARM: Device-tree updates
As always, a large number of DT updates. Too many to enumerate them all, but at a glance: New SoCs introduced in this release: - Amlogic: + Meson 8M2 SoC, a.k.a. S812. A quad Cortex-A9 SoC used in some set top boxes and other products. - Mediatek: + MT7623A, which is a flavor of the MT7623 family with other on-chip ethernet options. - Qualcomm: + SDM845, a.k.a Snapdragon 845, an 4+4-core Kryo 385/845 (Cortex-A75/A55 derivative) SoC that's one of the current high-end mobile SoCs. It's great to see mainline support for it. So far, you can't do much with it, since a lot of peripherals are not yet in the DTs but driver support for USB, GPU and other pieces are starting to trickle in. This might end up being a well-supported SoC upstream if the momentum keeps up. - Renesas: + R8A77990, a.k.a R-Car E3, a new automotive entertainment-targeted SoC. Currently only one Cortex-A53 CPU is enabled, we are eagerly awaiting more. So far, basic drivers such as serial, gpios, PMU and ethernet are enabled. + R8A77470, a.k.a. RZ/G1C, a new dual Cortex-A7 SoC with PowerVR GPU. Same here, basic set of drivers such as serial, gpios and ethernet enabled, and SMP support is also forthcoming. - STMicroelectronics: + STM32F469, very similar tih STM32F429 but with display support Enhancements to SoCs/platforms (DTS contents, some driver portions might not be in yet): - Allwinner sun8i (h3/a33/a83t) SMP, DVFS tweaks, misc - Amlogic Meson: I2C, UFS, TDM, GPIO external interrupts, MMC resets - Hisilicon hi3660: Thermal cooling, CPU frequency scaling, mailbox interfaces - Marvell Berlin2CD: SMP support, thermal sensors - Mediatek MT7623: Highspeed DMA, audio support - Qualcomm IPQ8074 PCIe support, MSM8996 UFS support - Renesas: Watchdog and PMU support across many platforms - Rockchip RK3399: USB3 OTG support - Samsung Exynos: Audio-over-HDMI on Odroid X/X2/U3 - STMicro STM32: Lots of peripherals added to STM32MP175C - Uniphier: Ethernet support New boards: - Allwinner A20: Olimex A20-SOM-EVB-eMMC variant - Allwinner H2+: Libre Computer ALL-H3-CC (h2+ version) - Allwinner A33: Nintendo NES/SuperNES Classic Edition - Aspeed: S2600WF, Inventec Lanyang BMC, Portwell Neptune - Berlin2CD: Valve Steam Link - Broadcom BCM5301X: Luxul XAP-1610 and XWR-3150 V1 - Broadcom: Raspberry Pi 3 B+ - Mediatek MT7623N and MT7623A: reference boards - Meson 8M2: Tronsmart MXIII Plus - NXP i.MX: Engicam i.CoreM6, DHCOM iMX6 SOM, BTicino i.MX6DL Mamoj - Qualcomm MSM8974: Sony Xperia Z1 Compact support - Qualcomm SDM845: MTP development board - Renesas: Ebisu R8A77990 board - Renesas RZ/G1C: iwg23s: iWave G235-SDB - TI am335x: Pocketbeagle support -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJDBAABCAAtFiEElf+HevZ4QCAJmMQ+jBrnPN6EHHcFAlsfBtUPHG9sb2ZAbGl4 b20ubmV0AAoJEIwa5zzehBx3wfYQAI1hlPhRx7H1zbc59zdlW6daY7y1+dXuqoCs K5Hxsurlsbnx9fjeGcBp/razL5YtdZmBYII8IBhKzhLKp/A0gqmX7W9pTNQj9/Sp SOIl8dci/yr0HUpgwc4IdVhJBdpplv48GK3q8opSocI/J9dnD873NHLlvTpCB+Jy GCD9tB56JnOfTO+n0Yg+tyuig1jIQCc52Iwnmxv2vYPbsHUaEmqz1Z+wBe0BaDk+ eVsohNQI/2xxRzv8PE13H/ojcZ532rF45aw6ypRwCvg1MzCYXSdKLJlIWx8Ci581 YmRPlCOWai+AxSATgJhIR9n9dxn6hqxEgVyu7AOxPVa0O4DKB3oy8PPo5wlOCKcU J1n5zJwnULWw4eVa1ag/cEMbz95QMC1F9MmyiLUfz3esHwyD/Gl3ks9v1gwn9XYp xsI+oGnMy/Uz4oZ1/XM5CO5UUDXyixVD3pYEF8wLaYX2JY8zETI5qfvNL0bwZX3P lLFCI7Xdwsk3+HCp7aHs4KkWHLVGq65SxrXKTIpU+vEq+0RYiV/cWP9Swa/RNrMH gB00oZ2TBRuIr/KxsCKyCkKApocW4J4WtZ2sMY7QDXzW68lq8oIbefY+6Abgk4/7 6J7D5n0gmTB38wrzZCY5UF0eQrLjPwnxuLywEll5oLFbNTr/7Aruk2kFYEMGjM9E QmXGoHXU =jLvk -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'armsoc-dt' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm/arm-soc Pull ARM SoC device tree updates from Olof Johansson: "As always, a large number of DT updates. ARM: SoC platform updates
Here are the main updates for SoC support (besides DT additions) for ARM 32- and 64-bit platforms. The branch also contains defconfig updates to turn on drivers and options as needed on the various platforms. The largest parts of the delta are from cleanups moving platform data and board file setup of TI platforms to ti-sysc bus drivers. There are also some sweeping changes of eeprom and nand setup on Davinci, i.MX and other platforms. Samsung is removing support for Exynos5440, which was an oddball SoC that hasn't been seen much use in designs. Renesas is adding support for new SoCs (R-Car E3, RZ/G1C and RZ/N1D). Linus Walleij is also removing support for ux500 (Sony Ericsson) U8540/9540 SoCs that never made it to significant mass production and products. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJDBAABCAAtFiEElf+HevZ4QCAJmMQ+jBrnPN6EHHcFAlsfCGIPHG9sb2ZAbGl4 b20ubmV0AAoJEIwa5zzehBx3Ks8P/3j87Za+6OTCzo+lW2byUy1CI4muGwxNSIxX 65A1Wt2qvRDxjCX4MI5Cx8P1YdYJv+5ZF2p4vdlgQXoz3/XDbG+lxJ+/lyWl/+MK 9kGsQWwEVicbGkaJCYR4ZKvfAwZ9jf7+cndY0Vgii44xQLsQZHEIfIO+mdlK43GZ xqaSckLQQzsDqjMUIckiyVy97RsDk1eLK+H2I+l7qs9v0z5UnhoD2CTxX5LzT8eH NlFmfUPN7Znshmt0aMznZyBRr2oM5Dsg49SfG0WhbOzyiZjSpw8MQ0N+RzyROhhB h5PjyuZN9fx2dO8Jjkqt3B8KmGFNDarGOmrasIJeCJDFRa9NStqFn0y4qJXS2wU7 4La3GoBYRV8x0gq339pQ+70qKuD06e62GL7kV656yi+93CitWxy6IjrIACjSX6zH PD1hQpewfXAcHAHdBqNevRcz/sjG+36GJSCgI4umSP48NMlCuZafFAT4U/PVlt4E 6VRQDeoi5ZFYIuPL1+bZvHax4fFxJGnaf02uQ/OPYP1o48AueSSvdo6bUPFbhwOD u0/uo3r+HxtQsw9I3tP3kj3/775BJclkO6zbG/dGZ8obuzuDwhuFtr3rzCrP/IzN n3rcBuFNZE6SQeKU+Tvmnh8ZLhJc5L8EYvqmihZj+BSfprBc8POFR2la4MRnHSn+ tPEC/n9E =S5wc -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'armsoc-soc' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm/arm-soc Pull ARM SoC platform updates from Olof Johansson: "Here are the main updates for SoC support (besides DT additions) for ARM 32- and 64-bit platforms. f2fs-for-4.18-rc1
In this round, we've mainly focused on discard, aka unmap, control along with fstrim for Android-specific usage model. In addition, we've fixed writepage flow which returned EAGAIN previously resulting in EIO of fsync(2) due to mapping's error state. In order to avoid old MM bug [1], we decided not to use __GFP_ZERO for the mapping for node and meta page caches. As always, we've cleaned up many places for future fsverity and symbol conflicts. Enhancement: - do discard/fstrim in lower priority considering fs utilization - split large discard commands into smaller ones for better responsiveness - add more sanity checks to address syzbot reports - add a mount option, fsync_mode=nobarrier, which can reduce # of cache flushes - clean up symbol namespace with modified function names - be strict on block allocation and IO control in corner cases Bug fix: - don't use __GFP_ZERO for mappings - fix error reports in writepage to avoid fsync() failure - avoid selinux denial on CAP_RESOURCE on resgid/resuid - fix some subtle race conditions in GC/atomic writes/shutdown - fix overflow bugs in sanity_check_raw_super - fix missing bits on get_flags Clean-up: - prepare the generic flow for future fsverity integration - fix some broken coding standard [1] https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/4/8/661 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE00UqedjCtOrGVvQiQBSofoJIUNIFAlsepb8ACgkQQBSofoJI UNJdSw/+IhrYJFkJEN/pV4M5xSjYirl/P2WJ4AGi6HcpjEGmaDiBi2whod1Jw2NE 1auSMiby7K91VAmPvxMmmLhOdC8XgJ8jwY1nEaZMfmMXohlaD3FDY5bzYf5rJDF4 J184P6xUZ2IKlFVA4prwNQgYi3awPthVu1lxbFPp8GUHDbmr5ZXEysxPDzz2O0Em oE7WmklmyCHJPhmg/EcVXfF/Ekf3zMOVR+EI2otcDjnWIQioVetIK8CKi0MM4bkG X8Z318ANjGTd42woupXIzsiTrMRONY7zzkUvE+S6tfUjKZoIdofDM5OIXMdOxpxL DZ53WrwfeB74igD8jDZgqD6OaonIfDfCuKrwUASFAC2Ou4h3apj3ckUzoHtAhEUL z5yTSKTrtfuoSufhBp+nKKs3ijDgms76arw8x/pPdN6D6xDwIJtBPxC2sObPaj35 damv4GyM4+sbhGO/Gbie2q6za55IvYFZc7JNCC2D2K5tnBmUaa7/XdvxcyigniGk AZgkaddHePkAZpa5AYYirZR8bd7IFds0+m6VcybG0/pYb0qPEcI6U4mujBSCIwVy kXuD7su3jNjj6hWnCl5PSQo8yBWS5H8c6/o+5XHozzYA91dsLAmD8entuCreg6Hp NaIFio0qKULweLK86f66qQTsRPMpYRAtqPS0Ew0+3llKMcrlRp4= =JrW7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'f2fs-for-4.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jaegeuk/f2fs Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim: "In this round, we've mainly focused on discard, aka unmap, control along with fstrim for Android-specific usage model. This is mostly updates to the usual drivers: ufs, qedf, mpt3sas, lpfc, xfcp, hisi_sas, cxlflash, qla2xxx. In the absence of Nic, we're also taking target updates which are mostly minor except for the tcmu refactor. This time we have a good set of changes to the core framework that do some
general cleanups, but nothing too major. The majority of the diff goes to two SoCs, Actions Semi and Qualcomm. A brand new driver is introduced for Actions Semi so it takes up some lines to add all the different types, and the Qualcomm diff is there because we add support for two SoCs and it's quite a bit of data. Otherwise the big driver updates are on TI Davinci and Amlogic platforms. And then the long tail of driver updates for various fixes and stuff follows after that. Staging/IIO patches for 4.18-rc1
Here is the big staging and IIO driver update for 4.18-rc1. It was delayed as I wanted to make sure the final driver deletions did not cause any major merge issues, and all now looks good. There are a lot of patches here, just over 1000. The diffstat summary shows the major changes here: 1007 files changed, 16828 insertions(+), 227770 deletions(-) Because of this, we might be close to shrinking the overall kernel source code size for two releases in a row. There was loads of work in this release cycle, primarily: - tons of ks7010 driver cleanups - lots of mt7621 driver fixes and cleanups - most driver cleanups - wilc1000 fixes and cleanups - lots and lots of IIO driver cleanups and new additions - debugfs cleanups for all staging drivers - lots of other staging driver cleanups and fixes, the shortlog has the full details. but the big user-visable things here are the removal of 3 chunks of code: - ncpfs and ipx were removed on schedule, no one has cared about this code since it moved to staging last year, and if it needs to come back, it can be reverted. - lustre file system is removed. I've ranted at the lustre developers about once a year for the past 5 years, with no real forward progress at all to clean things up and get the code into the "real" part of the kernel. Given that the lustre developers continue to work on an external tree and try to port those changes to the in-kernel tree every once in a while, this whole thing really really is not working out at all. So I'm deleting it so that the developers can spend the time working in their out-of-tree location and get things cleaned up properly to get merged into the tree correctly at a later date. Because of these file removals, you will have merge issues on some of these files (2 in the ipx code, 1 in the ncpfs code, and 1 in the atomisp driver). Just delete those files, it's a simple merge :) All of this has been in linux-next for a while with no reported problems. libnvdimm for 4.18
* DAX broke a fundamental assumption of truncate of file mapped pages. The truncate path assumed that it is safe to disconnect a pinned page from a file and let the filesystem reclaim the physical block. With DAX the page is equivalent to the filesystem block. Introduce dax_layout_busy_page() to enable filesystems to wait for pinned DAX pages to be released. Without this wait a filesystem could allocate blocks under active device-DMA to a new file. * DAX arranges for the block layer to be bypassed and uses dax_direct_access() + copy_to_iter() to satisfy read(2) calls. However, the memcpy_mcsafe() facility is available through the pmem block driver. In order to safely handle media errors, via the DAX block-layer bypass, introduce copy_to_iter_mcsafe(). * Fix cache management policy relative to the ACPI NFIT Platform Capabilities Structure to properly elide cache flushes when they are not necessary. The table indicates whether CPU caches are power-fail protected. regulator: Updates for v4.18
Quite a lot of core work this time around, though not 100% successful. We gained support for runtime mode changes thanks to David Collins and improved support for write only regulators (ones where we can't read back the configuration) from Douglas Anderson. There's been quite a bit of work from Linus Walleij on converting from specfying GPIOs by numbers to descriptors. Sadly the testing turned out to be less good than we had hoped and so a lot of this had to be reverted. We also have the start of updates to use coupled regulators from Maciej Purski, unfortunately there are further problems there so the last couple of patches have been reverted. We also have new drivers for BD71837 and SY8106A devices, SAW regulators on Qualcomm SPMI and dropped support for some preproduction chips that never made it to market from the AB8500 driver. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQFHBAABCgAxFiEEreZoqmdXGLWf4p/qJNaLcl1Uh9AFAlsarcETHGJyb29uaWVA a2VybmVsLm9yZwAKCRAk1otyXVSH0B4HB/9MFV/MK7Hw2hsVCX3qWTiH4tJ/X0MG tGz1PfmbH0CJ9ly5g+rvCoT+1/s7BydKzi1cd1RHnimBv2U1XagwSny3LNEcJs2Q pmhpGViakkQI/Y2h+u/j0Jk1nE+jTiKk+1ozUB7YnPekrGyQlf7TMhvKOLTvLKyX 56jdNxcW0MgSnXV2N6y4NpWhgvrQwvKjacTxV5iX7WP2rnK2WNFeG7Q859buhtI0 znRi+tO5hZsw5T44ickdPfotZn+i5o7MYLCkkaA2h1EwtpbYwVINfUjp3KtuyFhH 3B9GmCsjjN2Z2eInnkpzWfVXK2S1Vlp6+ka2FSs+U/4rVdd3Bw2KkblS =Ftua -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'regulator-v4.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/broonie/regulator Pull regulator updates from Mark Brown: "Quite a lot of core work this time around, though not 100% successful. This is the bulk of GPIO changes for the v4.18 development
cycle. Core changes: - We have killed off VLA from the core library and all drivers. The background should be clear for everyone at this point: https://lwn.net/Articles/749064/ Also I just don't like VLA's, kernel developers hate it when compilers do things behind their back. It's as simple as that. I'm sorry that they even slipped in to begin with. Kudos to Laura Abbott for exorcising them. - Support GPIO hogs in machines/board files. vfio/mdev: Check globally for duplicate devices
When we create an mdev device, we check for duplicates against the parent device and return -EEXIST if found, but the mdev device namespace is global since we'll link all devices from the bus. We do catch this later in sysfs_do_create_link_sd() to return -EEXIST, but with it comes a kernel warning and stack trace for trying to create duplicate sysfs links, which makes it an undesirable response. Therefore we should really be looking for duplicates across all mdev parent devices, or as implemented here, against our mdev device list. Using mdev_list to prevent duplicates means that we can remove mdev_parent.lock, but in order not to serialize mdev device creation and removal globally, we add mdev_device.active which allows UUIDs to be reserved such that we can drop the mdev_list_lock before the mdev device is fully in place. Two behavioral notes; first, mdev_parent.lock had the side-effect of serializing mdev create and remove ops per parent device. This was an implementation detail, not an intentional guarantee provided to the mdev vendor drivers. Vendor drivers can trivially provide this serialization internally if necessary. Second, review comments note the new -EAGAIN behavior when the device, and in particular the remove attribute, becomes visible in sysfs. If a remove is triggered prior to completion of mdev_device_create() the user will see a -EAGAIN error. While the errno is different, receiving an error during this period is not, the previous implementation returned -ENODEV for the same condition. Furthermore, the consistency to the user is improved in the case where mdev_device_remove_ops() returns error. Previously concurrent calls to mdev_device_remove() could see the device disappear with -ENODEV and return in the case of error. Now a user would see -EAGAIN while the device is in this transitory state. The writecache target caches writes on persistent memory or SSD. It is intended for databases or other programs that need extremely low commit latency. mm: memcg: allow lowering memory.swap.max below the current usage
Currently an attempt to set swap.max into a value lower than the actual swap usage fails, which causes configuration problems as there's no way of lowering the configuration below the current usage short of turning off swap entirely. This makes swap.max difficult to use and allows delegatees to lock the delegator out of reducing swap allocation. This patch updates swap_max_write() so that the limit can be lowered below the current usage. It doesn't implement active reclaiming of swap entries for the following reasons. * mem_cgroup_swap_full() already tells the swap machinary to aggressively reclaim swap entries if the usage is above 50% of limit, so simply lowering the limit automatically triggers gradual reclaim. * Forcing back swapped out pages is likely to heavily impact the workload and mess up the working set. Given that swap usually is a lot less valuable and less scarce, letting the existing usage dissipate over time through the above gradual reclaim and as they're falted back in is likely the better behavior. memcg: introduce memory.min
Memory controller implements the memory.low best-effort memory protection mechanism, which works perfectly in many cases and allows protecting working sets of important workloads from sudden reclaim. But its semantics has a significant limitation: it works only as long as there is a supply of reclaimable memory. This makes it pretty useless against any sort of slow memory leaks or memory usage increases. This is especially true for swapless systems. If swap is enabled, memory soft protection effectively postpones problems, allowing a leaking application to fill all swap area, which makes no sense. The only effective way to guarantee the memory protection in this case is to invoke the OOM killer. It's possible to handle this case in userspace by reacting on MEMCG_LOW events; but there is still a place for a fail-safe in-kernel mechanism to provide stronger guarantees. This patch introduces the memory.min interface for cgroup v2 memory controller. It works very similarly to memory.low (sharing the same hierarchical behavior), except that it's not disabled if there is no more reclaimable memory in the system. If cgroup is not populated, its memory.min is ignored, because otherwise even the OOM killer wouldn't be able to reclaim the protected memory, and the system can stall. mm: introduce ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL
Currently the PTE special supports is turned on in per architecture header files. Most of the time, it is defined in arch/*/include/asm/pgtable.h depending or not on some other per architecture static definition. This patch introduce a new configuration variable to manage this directly in the Kconfig files. It would later replace __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL. Here notes for some architecture where the definition of __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is not obvious: arm __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL which is currently defined in arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable-3level.h which is included by arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable.h when CONFIG_ARM_LPAE is set. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if ARM_LPAE. powerpc __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined in 2 files: - arch/powerpc/include/asm/book3s/64/pgtable.h - arch/powerpc/include/asm/pte-common.h The first one is included if (PPC_BOOK3S & PPC64) while the second is included in all the other cases. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL all the time. sparc: __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined if defined(__sparc__) && defined(__arch64__) which are defined through the compiler in sparc/Makefile if !SPARC32 which I assume to be if SPARC64. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if SPARC64 There is no functional change introduced by this patch. zram: introduce zram memory tracking
zRam as swap is useful for small memory device. However, swap means those pages on zram are mostly cold pages due to VM's LRU algorithm. Especially, once init data for application are touched for launching, they tend to be not accessed any more and finally swapped out. zRAM can store such cold pages as compressed form but it's pointless to keep in memory. Better idea is app developers free them directly rather than remaining them on heap. This patch tell us last access time of each block of zram via "cat /sys/kernel/debug/zram/zram0/block_state". The output is as follows, 300 75.033841 .wh 301 63.806904 s.. 302 63.806919 ..h First column is zram's block index and 3rh one represents symbol (s: same page w: written page to backing store h: huge page) of the block state. Second column represents usec time unit of the block was last accessed. So above example means the 300th block is accessed at 75.033851 second and it was huge so it was written to the backing store. Admin can leverage this information to catch cold|incompressible pages of process with *pagemap* once part of heaps are swapped out. I used the feature a few years ago to find memory hoggers in userspace to notify them what memory they have wasted without touch for a long time. With it, they could reduce unnecessary memory space. However, at that time, I hacked up zram for the feature but now I need the feature again so I decided it would be better to upstream rather than keeping it alone. I hope I submit the userspace tool to use the feature soon.
