Today the EFI runtime functions are setup in architecture specific
code (x86 and arm), with the functions themselves living in drivers/xen
as they are not architecture dependent.
As the setup is exactly the same for arm and x86 move the setup to
drivers/xen, too. This at once removes the need to make the single
functions global visible.

If MCFG area is not reserved in E820, Xen by default will defer its usage
until Dom0 registers it explicitly after ACPI parser recognizes it as
a reserved resource in DSDT. Having it reserved in E820 is not
mandatory according to "PCI Firmware Specification, rev 3.2" (par. 4.1.2)
and firmware is free to keep a hole in E820 in that place. Xen doesn't know
what exactly is inside this hole since it lacks full ACPI view of the
platform therefore it's potentially harmful to access MCFG region
without additional checks as some machines are known to provide
inconsistent information on the size of the region.
Now xen_mcfg_late() runs after acpi_init() which is too late as some basic
PCI enumeration starts exactly there as well. Trying to register a device
prior to MCFG reservation causes multiple problems with PCIe extended
capability initializations in Xen (e.g. SR-IOV VF BAR sizing). There are
no convenient hooks for us to subscribe to so register MCFG areas earlier
upon the first invocation of xen_add_device(). It should be safe to do once
since all the boot time buses must have their MCFG areas in MCFG table
already and we don't support PCI bus hot-plug.

Now that we know we always have the dma-noncoherent.h helpers available
if we are on an architecture with support for non-coherent devices,
we can just call them directly, and remove the calls to the dma-direct
routines, including the fact that we call the dma_direct_map_page
routines but ignore the value returned from it. Instead we now have
Xen wrappers for the arch_sync_dma_for_{device,cpu} helpers that call
the special Xen versions of those routines for foreign pages.
Note that the new helpers get the physical address passed in addition
to the dma address to avoid another translation for the local cache
maintainance. The pfn_valid checks remain on the dma address as in
the old code, even if that looks a little funny.

range_straddles_page_boundary() is open coding several macros from
include/xen/page.h. Use those instead. Additionally there is no need
to have check_pages_physically_contiguous() as a separate function as
it is used only once, so merge it into range_straddles_page_boundary().

The condition in xen_swiotlb_free_coherent() for deciding whether to
call xen_destroy_contiguous_region() is wrong: in case the region to
be freed is not contiguous calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region() is
the wrong thing to do: it would result in inconsistent mappings of
multiple PFNs to the same MFN. This will lead to various strange
crashes or data corruption.
Instead of calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region() in that case a
warning should be issued as that situation should never occur.

breaks gntdev driver. If vma->vm_pgoff > 0, vm_map_pages()
will:
- use map->pages starting at vma->vm_pgoff instead of 0
- verify map->count against vma_pages()+vma->vm_pgoff instead of just
vma_pages().
In practice, this breaks using a single gntdev FD for mapping multiple
grants.

vma->vm_pgoff is used as index passed to gntdev_find_map_index. It's
basically using this parameter for "which grant reference to map".
map struct returned by gntdev_find_map_index() describes just the pages
to be mapped. Specifically map->pages[0] should be mapped at
vma->vm_start, not vma->vm_start+vma->vm_pgoff*PAGE_SIZE.
When trying to map grant with index (aka vma->vm_pgoff) > 1,
__vm_map_pages() will refuse to map it because it will expect map->count
to be at least vma_pages(vma)+vma->vm_pgoff, while it is exactly
vma_pages(vma).
Converting vm_map_pages() to use vm_map_pages_zero() will fix the
problem.

In the sysctl code the proc_dointvec_minmax() function is often used to
validate the user supplied value between an allowed range. This
function uses the extra1 and extra2 members from struct ctl_table as
minimum and maximum allowed value.
On sysctl handler declaration, in every source file there are some
readonly variables containing just an integer which address is assigned

The special values 0, 1 and INT_MAX are very often used as range
boundary, leading duplication of variables like zero=0, one=1,
int_max=INT_MAX in different source files:

Add a const int array containing the most commonly used values, some
macros to refer more easily to the correct array member, and use them
instead of creating a local one for every object file.

Instead of trying to allocate pages with GFP_USER in
add_ballooned_pages() check the available free memory via
si_mem_available(). GFP_USER is far less limiting memory exhaustion
than the test via si_mem_available().
This will avoid dom0 running out of memory due to excessive foreign
page mappings especially on ARM and on x86 in PVH mode, as those don't
have a pre-ballooned area which can be used for foreign mappings.
As the normal ballooning suffers from the same problem don't balloon
down more than si_mem_available() pages in one iteration. At the same
time limit the default maximum number of retries.
This is part of XSA-300.

The Xen tmem (transcendent memory) driver can be removed, as the
related Xen hypervisor feature never made it past the "experimental"
state and will be removed in future Xen versions (>= 4.13).
The xen-selfballoon driver depends on tmem, so it can be removed, too.

When binding an interdomain event channel to a vcpu via
IOCTL_EVTCHN_BIND_INTERDOMAIN not only the event channel needs to be
bound, but the affinity of the associated IRQi must be changed, too.
Otherwise the IRQ and the event channel won't be moved to another vcpu
in case the original vcpu they were bound to is going offline.

On architectures that have a larger dma_addr_t than phys_addr_t,
the swiotlb_tbl_map_single() function truncates its return code
in the failure path, making it impossible to identify the error
later, as we compare to the original value:

On arm64 swiotlb is often (not always) already initialized by mem_init.
We don't want to initialize it twice, which would trigger a second
memory allocation. Moreover, the second memory pool is typically made of
high pages and ends up replacing the original memory pool of low pages.
As a side effect of this change, it is possible to have low pages in
swiotlb-xen on arm64.

During a suspend/resume, the xenwatch thread waits for all outstanding
xenstore requests and transactions to complete. This does not work
correctly for transactions started by userspace because it waits for
them to complete after freezing userspace threads which means the
transactions have no way of completing, resulting in a deadlock. This is
trivial to reproduce by running this script and then suspending the VM:

Even if this deadlock were resolved, misbehaving userspace should not
prevent a VM from being migrated. So, instead of waiting for these
transactions to complete before suspending, store the current generation
id for each transaction when it is started. The global generation id is
incremented during resume. If the caller commits the transaction and the
generation id does not match the current generation id, return EAGAIN so
that they try again. If the transaction was instead discarded, return OK
since no changes were made anyway.
This only affects users of the xenbus file interface. In-kernel users of
xenbus are assumed to be well-behaved and complete all transactions
before freezing.

Convert to use vm_map_pages_zero() to map range of kernel memory to user
vma.
This driver has ignored vm_pgoff. We could later "fix" these drivers to
behave according to the normal vm_pgoff offsetting simply by removing the

Use the mmu_notifier_range_blockable() helper function instead of directly
dereferencing the range->blockable field. This is done to make it easier
to change the mmu_notifier range field.

To facilitate additional options to get_user_pages_fast() change the
singular write parameter to be gup_flags.
This patch does not change any functionality. New functionality will
follow in subsequent patches.
Some of the get_user_pages_fast() call sites were unchanged because they
already passed FOLL_WRITE or 0 for the write parameter.
NOTE: It was suggested to change the ordering of the get_user_pages_fast()
arguments to ensure that callers were converted. This breaks the current
GUP call site convention of having the returned pages be the final
parameter. So the suggestion was rejected.

- finally, change VFS to pass ppos=NULL into .read/.write for files
that declare themselves streams. It was suggested by Rasmus Villemoes
and makes sure that if ppos starts to be erroneously used in a stream
file, such bug won't go unnoticed and will produce an oops instead of
creating illusion of position change being taken into account.
Note: this patch does not conflict with "fuse: Add FOPEN_STREAM to
use stream_open()" that will be hopefully coming via FUSE tree,
because fs/fuse/ uses new-style .read_iter/.write_iter, and for these
accessors position is still passed as non-pointer kiocb.ki_pos .

stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and
write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods
in file_operations which assume @offset access.
I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert -
and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct
to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci
limitations. The script also does not convert files that should be valid to
convert, but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek
for unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g.
drivers/input/mousedev.c)

Get rid of the grand multiplexer and implement the sync_single_for_cpu
and sync_single_for_device methods directly, and then loop over them
for the scatterlist based variants.
Note that this also loses a few comments related to highlevel DMA API
concepts, which have nothing to do with the swiotlb-xen implementation
details.

irq_ctx_init() is invoked from native_init_IRQ() or from xen_init_IRQ()
code. There is no reason to have this split. The interrupt stacks must be
allocated no matter what.
Invoke it from init_IRQ() before invoking the native or XEN init
implementation.

Commit 9c225f2655 ("vfs: atomic f_pos accesses as per POSIX") added
locking for file.f_pos access and in particular made concurrent read and
write not possible - now both those functions take f_pos lock for the
whole run, and so if e.g. a read is blocked waiting for data, write will
deadlock waiting for that read to complete.
This caused regression for stream-like files where previously read and
write could run simultaneously, but after that patch could not do so
anymore. See e.g. commit 581d21a2d0 ("xenbus: fix deadlock on writes
to /proc/xen/xenbus") which fixes such regression for particular case of
/proc/xen/xenbus.
The patch that added f_pos lock in 2014 did so to guarantee POSIX thread
safety for read/write/lseek and added the locking to file descriptors of
all regular files. In 2014 that thread-safety problem was not new as it
was already discussed earlier in 2006.
However even though 2006'th version of Linus's patch was adding f_pos
locking "only for files that are marked seekable with FMODE_LSEEK (thus
avoiding the stream-like objects like pipes and sockets)", the 2014
version - the one that actually made it into the tree as 9c225f2655 -
is doing so irregardless of whether a file is seekable or not.

The reason that it did so is, probably, that there are many files that
are marked non-seekable, but e.g. their read implementation actually
depends on knowing current position to correctly handle the read. Some

Despite that, many nonseekable_open users implement read and write with
pure stream semantics - they don't depend on passed ppos at all. And for
those cases where read could wait for something inside, it creates a
situation similar to xenbus - the write could be never made to go until
read is done, and read is waiting for some, potentially external, event,
for potentially unbounded time -> deadlock.

In addition to the cases above another regression caused by f_pos
locking is that now FUSE filesystems that implement open with
FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE flag, can no longer implement bidirectional
stream-like files - for the same reason as above e.g. read can deadlock
write locking on file.f_pos in the kernel.
FUSE's FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE was added in 2008 in a7c1b990f7 ("fuse:
implement nonseekable open") to support OSSPD. OSSPD implements /dev/dsp
in userspace with FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE flag, with corresponding read and
write routines not depending on current position at all, and with both
read and write being potentially blocking operations:

Corresponding libfuse example/test also describes FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE as
"somewhat pipe-like files ..." with read handler not using offset.
However that test implements only read without write and cannot exercise

I've actually hit the read vs write deadlock for real while implementing
my FUSE filesystem where there is /head/watch file, for which open
creates separate bidirectional socket-like stream in between filesystem
and its user with both read and write being later performed
simultaneously. And there it is semantically not easy to split the
stream into two separate read-only and write-only channels:

Let's fix this regression. The plan is:
1. We can't change nonseekable_open to include &~FMODE_ATOMIC_POS -
doing so would break many in-kernel nonseekable_open users which
actually use ppos in read/write handlers.
2. Add stream_open() to kernel to open stream-like non-seekable file
descriptors. Read and write on such file descriptors would never use
nor change ppos. And with that property on stream-like files read and
write will be running without taking f_pos lock - i.e. read and write
could be running simultaneously.
3. With semantic patch search and convert to stream_open all in-kernel
nonseekable_open users for which read and write actually do not
depend on ppos and where there is no other methods in file_operations
which assume @offset access.
4. Add FOPEN_STREAM to fs/fuse/ and open in-kernel file-descriptors via
steam_open if that bit is present in filesystem open reply.
It was tempting to change fs/fuse/ open handler to use stream_open
instead of nonseekable_open on just FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE flags, but
grepping through Debian codesearch shows users of FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE,
and in particular GVFS which actually uses offset in its read and
write handlers

so if we would do such a change it will break a real user.
5. Add stream_open and FOPEN_STREAM handling to stable kernels starting
from v3.14+ (the kernel where 9c225f2655 first appeared).
This will allow to patch OSSPD and other FUSE filesystems that
provide stream-like files to return FOPEN_STREAM | FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE
in their open handler and this way avoid the deadlock on all kernel
versions. This should work because fs/fuse/ ignores unknown open
flags returned from a filesystem and so passing FOPEN_STREAM to a
kernel that is not aware of this flag cannot hurt. In turn the kernel
that is not aware of FOPEN_STREAM will be < v3.14 where just
FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE is sufficient to implement streams without read vs
write deadlock.
This patch adds stream_open, converts /proc/xen/xenbus to it and adds
semantic patch to automatically locate in-kernel places that are either
required to be converted due to read vs write deadlock, or that are just
safe to be converted because read and write do not use ppos and there
are no other funky methods in file_operations.
Regarding semantic patch I've verified each generated change manually -
that it is correct to convert - and each other nonseekable_open instance
left - that it is either not correct to convert there, or that it is not
converted due to current stream_open.cocci limitations.
The script also does not convert files that should be valid to convert,
but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek for
unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g.
drivers/input/mousedev.c)

The XEN balloon driver - in contrast to other balloon drivers - allows
to map some inflated pages to user space. Such pages are allocated via
alloc_xenballooned_pages() and freed via free_xenballooned_pages().
The pfn space of these allocated pages is used to map other things
by the hypervisor using hypercalls.
Pages marked with PG_offline must never be mapped to user space (as
this page type uses the mapcount field of struct pages).
So what we can do is, clear/set PG_offline when allocating/freeing an
inflated pages. This way, most inflated pages can be excluded by
dumping tools and the "reused for other purpose" balloon pages are
correctly not marked as PG_offline.

Add check for the return value of memblock_alloc*() functions and call
panic() in case of error. The panic message repeats the one used by

The "cpu" variable comes from the sscanf() so Smatch marks it as
untrusted data. We can't pass a higher value than "nr_cpu_ids" to
cpu_possible() or it results in an out of bounds access.

When freeing pages are done with higher order, time spent on coalescing
pages by buddy allocator can be reduced. With section size of 256MB,
hot add latency of a single section shows improvement from 50-60 ms to
less than 1 ms, hence improving the hot add latency by 60 times. Modify
external providers of online callback to align with the change.

The legacy hypercall handlers were originally added with
a comment explaining that "copying the argument structures in
HYPERVISOR_event_channel_op() and HYPERVISOR_physdev_op() into the local
variable is sufficiently safe" and only made sure to not write
past the end of the argument structure, the checks in linux/string.h
disagree with that, when link-time optimizations are used:

Further research turned out that only Xen 3.0.2 or earlier required the
fallback at all, while all versions in use today don't need it.
As far as I can tell, it is not even possible to run a mainline kernel
on those old Xen releases, at the time when they were in use, only
a patched kernel was supported anyway.

Check if there are any imported dma-bufs left not released by
user-space when grant device's release callback is called and
free those if this is the case. This can happen if user-space
leaks the buffers because of a bug or application has been
terminated for any reason.

If there are exported DMA buffers which are still in use and
grant device is closed by either normal user-space close or by
a signal this leads to the grant device context to be destroyed,
thus making it not possible to correctly destroy those exported

There is no need for this at all. Worst it means that if
the guest tries to write to BARs it could lead (on certain
platforms) to PCI SERR errors.
Please note that with af6fc858a3
"xen-pciback: limit guest control of command register"
a guest is still allowed to enable those control bits (safely), but
is not allowed to disable them and that therefore a well behaved
frontend which enables things before using them will still
function correctly.
This is done via an write to the configuration register 0x4 which
triggers on the backend side:
command_write
\- pci_enable_device
\- pci_enable_device_flags
\- do_pci_enable_device
\- pcibios_enable_device
\-pci_enable_resourcess
[which enables the PCI_COMMAND_MEMORY|PCI_COMMAND_IO]
However guests (and drivers) which don't do this could cause
problems, including the security issues which XSA-120 sought
to address.

Xen-swiotlb hooks into the arm/arm64 arch code through a copy of the DMA
DMA mapping operations stored in the struct device arch data.
Switching arm64 to use the direct calls for the merged DMA direct /
swiotlb code broke this scheme. Replace the indirect calls with
direct-calls in xen-swiotlb as well to fix this problem.

The problem is that we call this with a spin lock held.
The call tree is:
pvcalls_front_accept() holds bedata->socket_lock.
-> create_active()
-> __get_free_pages() uses GFP_KERNEL
The create_active() function is only called from pvcalls_front_accept()
with a spin_lock held, The allocation is not allowed to sleep and
GFP_KERNEL is not sufficient.
This issue was detected by using the Coccinelle software.
v2: Add a function doing the allocations which is called
outside the lock and passing the allocated data to
create_active().
v3: Use the matching deallocators i.e., free_page()
and free_pages(), respectively.
v4: It would be better to pre-populate map (struct sock_mapping),
rather than introducing one more new struct.
v5: Since allocating the data outside of this call it should also
be freed outside, when create_active() fails.
Move kzalloc(sizeof(*map2), GFP_ATOMIC) outside spinlock and
use GFP_KERNEL instead.

Nobody has actually used the type (VERIFY_READ vs VERIFY_WRITE) argument
of the user address range verification function since we got rid of the
old racy i386-only code to walk page tables by hand.
It existed because the original 80386 would not honor the write protect
bit when in kernel mode, so you had to do COW by hand before doing any
user access. But we haven't supported that in a long time, and these
days the 'type' argument is a purely historical artifact.
A discussion about extending 'user_access_begin()' to do the range
checking resulted this patch, because there is no way we're going to
move the old VERIFY_xyz interface to that model. And it's best done at
the end of the merge window when I've done most of my merges, so let's
just get this done once and for all.
This patch was mostly done with a sed-script, with manual fix-ups for
the cases that weren't of the trivial 'access_ok(VERIFY_xyz' form.
There were a couple of notable cases:
- csky still had the old "verify_area()" name as an alias.
- the iter_iov code had magical hardcoded knowledge of the actual
values of VERIFY_{READ,WRITE} (not that they mattered, since nothing
really used it)
- microblaze used the type argument for a debug printout
but other than those oddities this should be a total no-op patch.
I tried to fix up all architectures, did fairly extensive grepping for
access_ok() uses, and the changes are trivial, but I may have missed
something. Any missed conversion should be trivially fixable, though.

When a connection is closing we receive on pvcalls_sk_state_change
notification. Instead of setting the connection as closed immediately
(-ENOTCONN), let's read one more time from it: pvcalls_conn_back_read
will set the connection as closed when necessary.
That way, we avoid races between pvcalls_sk_state_change and
pvcalls_back_ioworker.

When a connection is closing in_error is set to ENOTCONN. There could
still be outstanding data on the ring left by the backend. Before
closing the connection on the frontend side, drain the ring.
