powerpc updates for 4.20
Notable changes: - A large series to rewrite our SLB miss handling, replacing a lot of fairly complicated asm with much fewer lines of C. - Following on from that, we now maintain a cache of SLB entries for each process and preload them on context switch. Leading to a 27% speedup for our context switch benchmark on Power9. - Improvements to our handling of SLB multi-hit errors. We now print more debug information when they occur, and try to continue running by flushing the SLB and reloading, rather than treating them as fatal. - Enable THP migration on 64-bit Book3S machines (eg. Power7/8/9). - Add support for physical memory up to 2PB in the linear mapping on 64-bit Book3S. We only support up to 512TB as regular system memory, otherwise the percpu allocator runs out of vmalloc space. - Add stack protector support for 32 and 64-bit, with a per-task canary. - Add support for PTRACE_SYSEMU and PTRACE_SYSEMU_SINGLESTEP. - Support recognising "big cores" on Power9, where two SMT4 cores are presented to us as a single SMT8 core. - A large series to cleanup some of our ioremap handling and PTE flags. - Add a driver for the PAPR SCM (storage class memory) interface, allowing guests to operate on SCM devices (acked by Dan). - Changes to our ftrace code to handle very large kernels, where we need to use a trampoline to get to ftrace_caller(). Many other smaller enhancements and cleanups. Merge branch 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull siginfo updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes close the known issues with setting si_code to an invalid value, and with not fully initializing struct siginfo. There remains work to do on nds32, arc, unicore32, powerpc, arm, arm64, ia64 and x86 to get the code that generates siginfo into a simpler and more maintainable state. Most of that work involves refactoring the signal handling code and thus careful code review. Also not included is the work to shrink the in kernel version of struct siginfo. That depends on getting the number of places that directly manipulate struct siginfo under control, as it requires the introduction of struct kernel_siginfo for the in kernel things. Overall this set of changes looks like it is making good progress, and with a little luck I will be wrapping up the siginfo work next development cycle" * 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (46 commits) signal/sh: Stop gcc warning about an impossible case in do_divide_error signal/mips: Report FPE_FLTUNK for undiagnosed floating point exceptions signal/um: More carefully relay signals in relay_signal. signal: Extend siginfo_layout with SIL_FAULT_{MCEERR|BNDERR|PKUERR} signal: Remove unncessary #ifdef SEGV_PKUERR in 32bit compat code signal/signalfd: Add support for SIGSYS signal/signalfd: Remove __put_user from signalfd_copyinfo signal/xtensa: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/xtensa: Consistenly use SIGBUS in do_unaligned_user signal/um: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sparc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sparc: Use send_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sh: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/s390: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/riscv: Replace do_trap_siginfo with force_sig_fault signal/riscv: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/parisc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/parisc: Use force_sig_mceerr where appropriate signal/openrisc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/nios2: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate ... |

powerpc/syscalls: Add COMPAT_SPU_NEW() macro
Currently the select system call is wired up with the SYSX_SPU() macro. The SYSX_SPU() is not handled by systbl_chk.c, which means the syscall number for select is not checked. That hides the fact that the syscall number for select is actually __NR__newselect not __NR_select. In a following patch we'd like to drop ppc32_select() which means select will become a regular COMPAT_SYS_SPU() syscall. But COMPAT_SYS_SPU() can't deal with the fact that the syscall number is actually __NR__newselect. We also can't just redefine __NR_select because that's still used for the old select call. So add a new COMPAT_NEW_SPU() that does the same thing as COMPAT_SYS_SPU() except it encodes that we're using the new number. Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au> |

signal: Ensure every siginfo we send has all bits initialized
Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions. Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when initializing a structure. The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local variable siginfo gets fully initialized. In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function in which it is declared. Instances of using memset to initialize siginfo have been replaced with calls clear_siginfo for clarity. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

Merge branch 'topic/paca' into next
Bring in yet another series that touches KVM code, and might need to be merged into the kvm-ppc branch to resolve conflicts. This required some changes in pnv_power9_force_smt4_catch/release() due to the paca array becomming an array of pointers. |

powerpc/64: Use array of paca pointers and allocate pacas individually
Change the paca array into an array of pointers to pacas. Allocate pacas individually. This allows flexibility in where the PACAs are allocated. Future work will allocate them node-local. Platforms that don't have address limits on PACAs would be able to defer PACA allocations until later in boot rather than allocate all possible ones up-front then freeing unused. This is slightly more overhead (one additional indirection) for cross CPU paca references, but those aren't too common. vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacement
This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we should be all done. Scripted-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

powerpc updates for 4.16
Highlights: - Enable support for memory protection keys aka "pkeys" on Power7/8/9 when using the hash table MMU. - Extend our interrupt soft masking to support masking PMU interrupts as well as "normal" interrupts, and then use that to implement local_t for a ~4x speedup vs the current atomics-based implementation. - A new driver "ocxl" for "Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI)" devices. - Support for new device tree properties on PowerVM to describe hotpluggable memory and devices. - Add support for CLOCK_{REALTIME/MONOTONIC}_COARSE to the 64-bit VDSO. - Freescale updates from Scott: "Contains fixes for CPM GPIO and an FSL PCI erratum workaround, plus a minor cleanup patch." As well as quite a lot of other changes all over the place, and small fixes and cleanups as always. powerpc: Use octal numbers for file permissions
Symbolic macros are unintuitive and hard to read, whereas octal constants are much easier to interpret. Replace macros for the basic permission flags (user/group/other read/write/execute) with numeric constants instead, across the whole powerpc tree. Introducing a significant number of changes across the tree for no runtime benefit isn't exactly desirable, but so long as these macros are still used in the tree people will keep sending patches that add them. Not only are they hard to parse at a glance, there are multiple ways of coming to the same value (as you can see with 0444 and 0644 in this patch) which hurts readability. powerpc/spufs: use timespec64 for timestamps
The switch log prints the tv_sec portion of timespec as a 32-bit number, while overflows in 2106. It also uses the timespec type, which is safe on 64-bit architectures, but deprecated because it causes overflows in 2038 elsewhere. This changes it to timespec64 and printing a 64-bit number for consistency. treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; pid: replace pid bitmap implementation with IDR API
Patch series "Replacing PID bitmap implementation with IDR API", v4. This series replaces kernel bitmap implementation of PID allocation with IDR API. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. powerpc updates for 4.14
Nothing really major this release, despite quite a lot of activity. Just lots of things all over the place. Some things of note include: - Access via perf to a new type of PMU (IMC) on Power9, which can count both core events as well as nest unit events (Memory controller etc). - Optimisations to the radix MMU TLB flushing, mostly to avoid unnecessary Page Walk Cache (PWC) flushes when the structure of the tree is not changing. - Reworks/cleanups of do_page_fault() to modernise it and bring it closer to other architectures where possible. - Rework of our page table walking so that THP updates only need to send IPIs to CPUs where the affected mm has run, rather than all CPUs. - The size of our vmalloc area is increased to 56T on 64-bit hash MMU systems. This avoids problems with the percpu allocator on systems with very sparse NUMA layouts. - STRICT_KERNEL_RWX support on PPC32. - A new sched domain topology for Power9, to capture the fact that pairs of cores may share an L2 cache. - Power9 support for VAS, which is a new mechanism for accessing coprocessors, and initial support for using it with the NX compression accelerator. - Major work on the instruction emulation support, adding support for many new instructions, and reworking it so it can be used to implement the emulation needed to fixup alignment faults. - Support for guests under PowerVM to use the Power9 XIVE interrupt controller. And probably that many things again that are almost as interesting, but I had to keep the list short. Plus the usual fixes and cleanups as always. fs: convert a pile of fsync routines to errseq_t based reporting
This patch converts most of the in-kernel filesystems that do writeback out of the pagecache to report errors using the errseq_t-based infrastructure that was recently added. This allows them to report errors once for each open file description. Most filesystems have a fairly straightforward fsync operation. They call filemap_write_and_wait_range to write back all of the data and wait on it, and then (sometimes) sync out the metadata. For those filesystems this is a straightforward conversion from calling filemap_write_and_wait_range in their fsync operation to calling file_write_and_wait_range.
