1077fa36f2 arch: Add lightweight memory barriers dma_rmb() and dma_wmb()
There are a number of situations where the mandatory barriers rmb() and
wmb() are used to order memory/memory operations in the device drivers
and those barriers are much heavier than they actually need to be. For
example in the case of PowerPC wmb() calls the heavy-weight sync
instruction when for coherent memory operations all that is really needed
is an lsync or eieio instruction.

This commit adds a coherent only version of the mandatory memory barriers
rmb() and wmb(). In most cases this should result in the barrier being the
same as the SMP barriers for the SMP case, however in some cases we use a
barrier that is somewhere in between rmb() and smp_rmb(). For example on
ARM the rmb barriers break down as follows:

  Barrier Call Explanation
  --------- -------- ----------------------------------
rmb() dsb() Data synchronization barrier - system
dma_rmb() dmb(osh) data memory barrier - outer sharable
smp_rmb() dmb(ish) data memory barrier - inner sharable

These new barriers are not as safe as the standard rmb() and wmb().
Specifically they do not guarantee ordering between coherent and incoherent
memories. The primary use case for these would be to enforce ordering of
reads and writes when accessing coherent memory that is shared between the
CPU and a device.

It may also be noted that there is no dma_mb(). Most architectures don't
provide a good mechanism for performing a coherent only full barrier without
resorting to the same mechanism used in mb(). As such there isn't much to
be gained in trying to define such a function.

8a44971841 arch: Cleanup read_barrier_depends() and comments
This patch is meant to cleanup the handling of read_barrier_depends and
smp_read_barrier_depends. In multiple spots in the kernel headers
read_barrier_depends is defined as "do {} while (0)", however we then go
into the SMP vs non-SMP sections and have the SMP version reference
read_barrier_depends, and the non-SMP define it as yet another empty
do/while.

With this commit I went through and cleaned out the duplicate definitions
and reduced the number of definitions down to 2 per header. In addition I
moved the 50 line comments for the macro from the x86 and mips headers that
defined it as an empty do/while to those that were actually defining the
macro, alpha and blackfin.

0cb6c969ed net, lib: kill arch_fast_hash library bits
As there are now no remaining users of arch_fast_hash(), lets kill
it entirely.

This basically reverts commit 71ae8aac3e ("lib: introduce arch

c5c38ef3d7 irq_work: Introduce arch_irq_work_has_interrupt()
The nohz full code needs irq work to trigger its own interrupt so that

3a6bfbc91d arch, locking: Ciao arch_mutex_cpu_relax()
The arch_mutex_cpu_relax() function, introduced by 34b133f, is
hacky and ugly. It was added a few years ago to address the fact
that common cpu_relax() calls include yielding on s390, and thus
impact the optimistic spinning functionality of mutexes. Nowadays
we use this function well beyond mutexes: rwsem, qrwlock, mcs and
lockref. Since the macro that defines the call is in the mutex header,
any users must include mutex.h and the naming is misleading as well.

This patch (i) renames the call to cpu_relax_lowlatency ("relax, but
only if you can do it with very low latency") and (ii) defines it in
each arch's asm/processor.h local header, just like for regular cpu_relax
functions. On all archs, except s390, cpu_relax_lowlatency is simply cpu_relax,
and thus we can take it out of mutex.h. While this can seem redundant,
I believe it is a good choice as it allows us to move out arch specific
logic from generic locking primitives and enables future(?) archs to
transparently define it, similarly to System Z.

31e6cdefd3 metag: Remove TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG
The Meta idle function jumps into the interrupt handler which
efficiently blocks waiting for the next interrupt when it reads the
interrupt status register (TXSTATI). No other (polling) idle functions
can be used, therefore TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG is unnecessary, so lets remove
it.

c70458f50c metag: Remove _STK_LIM_MAX override
Meta overrode _STK_LIM_MAX (the default RLIMIT_STACK hard limit) to
256MB, apparently in an attempt to prevent setup_arg_pages's
STACK_GROWSUP code from choosing the maximum stack size of 1GB, which is
far too large for Meta's limited virtual address space and hits a BUG_ON
(stack_top is usually 0x3ffff000).

However the commit "metag: Reduce maximum stack size to 256MB" reduces
the absolute stack size limit to a safe value for metag. This allows the
default _STK_LIM_MAX override to be removed, bringing the default
behaviour in line with all other architectures. Parisc in particular
recently removed their override of _STK_LIMT_MAX in commit e0d8898d76
(parisc: remove _STK_LIM_MAX override) since it subtly affects stack
allocation semantics in userland. Meta's uapi/asm/resource.h can now be
removed and switch to using generic-y.

042d27acb6 parisc, metag: Do not hardcode maximum userspace stack size
This patch affects only architectures where the stack grows upwards
(currently parisc and metag only). On those do not hardcode the maximum
initial stack size to 1GB for 32-bit processes, but make it configurable
via a config option.

The main problem with the hardcoded stack size is, that we have two
memory regions which grow upwards: stack and heap. To keep most of the
memory available for heap in a flexmap memory layout, it makes no sense
to hard allocate up to 1GB of the memory for stack which can't be used
as heap then.

This patch makes the stack size for 32-bit processes configurable and
uses 80MB as default value which has been in use during the last few
years on parisc and which hasn't showed any problems yet.

Specify the maximum stack size for arches where the stack grows upward
(parisc and metag) in asm/processor.h rather than hard coding in
fs/exec.c so that metag can specify a smaller value of 256MB rather than
1GB.

This fixes a BUG on metag if the RLIMIT_STACK hard limit is increased
beyond a safe value by root. E.g. when starting a process after running
"ulimit -H -s unlimited" it will then attempt to use a stack size of the
maximum 1GB which is far too big for metag's limited user virtual
address space (stack_top is usually 0x3ffff000):

2425ce8402 metag: fix memory barriers
Volatile access doesn't really imply the compiler barrier. Volatile access
is only ordered with respect to other volatile accesses, it isn't ordered
with respect to general memory accesses. Gcc may reorder memory accesses
around volatile access, as we can see in this simple example (if we
compile it with optimization, both increments of *b will be collapsed to
just one):

void fn(volatile int *a, long *b)
{
	(*b)++;
	*a = 10;
	(*b)++;
}

Consequently, we need the compiler barrier after a write to the volatile
variable, to make sure that the compiler doesn't reorder the volatile
write with something else.

47933ad41a arch: Introduce smp_load_acquire(), smp_store_release()
A number of situations currently require the heavyweight smp_mb(),
even though there is no need to order prior stores against later
loads. Many architectures have much cheaper ways to handle these
situations, but the Linux kernel currently has no portable way
to make use of them.

This commit therefore supplies smp_load_acquire() and
smp_store_release() to remedy this situation. The new
smp_load_acquire() primitive orders the specified load against
any subsequent reads or writes, while the new smp_store_release()
primitive orders the specifed store against any prior reads or
writes. These primitives allow array-based circular FIFOs to be
implemented without an smp_mb(), and also allow a theoretical
hole in rcu_assign_pointer() to be closed at no additional
expense on most architectures.

In addition, the RCU experience transitioning from explicit
smp_read_barrier_depends() and smp_wmb() to rcu_dereference()
and rcu_assign_pointer(), respectively resulted in substantial
improvements in readability. It therefore seems likely that
replacing other explicit barriers with smp_load_acquire() and
smp_store_release() will provide similar benefits. It appears
that roughly half of the explicit barriers in core kernel code
might be so replaced.

1d61cf121d smp, metag: kill SMP single function call interrupt
Commit 9a46ad6d6d "smp: make smp_call_function_many() use logic
similar to smp_call_function_single()" has unified the way to handle
single and multiple cross-CPU function calls. Now only one interrupt is
needed for architecture specific code to support generic SMP function
call interfaces, so kill the redundant single function call interrupt.

95281171a7 metag: handle low level kicks directly
Kick interrupts trigger the LWK (low level kick) signal, usually handled
by the __TBIDoStdLWK() function which is the only handler inherited from
the bootloader. The LWK signal is converted either to a SWK (plain
software kick) or a SWS (software kick with an attached message).

Linux has kick_handler() to handle SWK and call registered kick handlers
(IPIs and inter-thread comms), but SWS is as far as I'm aware unused
with Linux.

Therefore remove that abstraction and have Linux handle LWK directly.
This will reduce kick latency slightly, and reduce our dependence on the
bootloader, which makes it easier to directly boot a kernel in QEMU
(particularly for SMP).

32df8dca50 of: remove HAVE_ARCH_DEVTREE_FIXUPS
HAVE_ARCH_DEVTREE_FIXUPS appears to always be needed except for sparc,
but it is only used for /proc/device-teee and sparc does not enable
/proc/device-tree. So this option is redundant. Remove the option and
always enable it. This has the side effect of fixing /proc/device-tree
on arches such as arm64 which failed to define this option.

9bd721c55c sched/balancing: Consider max cost of idle balance per sched domain
In this patch, we keep track of the max cost we spend doing idle load balancing
for each sched domain. If the avg time the CPU remains idle is less then the
time we have already spent on idle balancing + the max cost of idle balancing
in the sched domain, then we don't continue to attempt the balance. We also
keep a per rq variable, max_idle_balance_cost, which keeps track of the max
time spent on newidle load balances throughout all its domains so that we can
determine the avg_idle's max value.

By using the max, we avoid overrunning the average. This further reduces the
chance we attempt balancing when the CPU is not idle for longer than the cost
to balance.

In csum_tcpudp_nofold, add 1 if the carry bit is set after adding the
destination IP address (32 bits) to the checksum (16 bits).

The lack of carry handling for this particular addition meant that a
destination address of *.*.255.255 (e.g. certain broadcasts) sometimes
resulted in an incorrect checksum. This bug has been present in the Meta
port since the code was written in the 2.4 days.

caa279dda4 metag: init common clk and use "core" clk
If the common clock framework is enabled, call of_clk_init(NULL) in
time_init() to register device tree clocks with the clock framework.

After this time_init() calls a new function init_metag_clocks(), which
looks for a clock named "core" in the node compatible with "img, meta"
(usually the root node). If found the get_core_freq machine callback is
overridden to obtain the core clock frequency using that clock.
