If we do not have lowlevel support for reseting the GPU, or if the user
has explicitly disabled reseting the device, the failure is expected.
Since it is an expected failure, we should be using a lower priority
message than *ERROR*, perhaps NOTICE. In the absence of DRM_NOTICE, just
emit the expected failure as a DEBUG message.

In the reset_counter, we use two bits to track a GPU hang and reset. The
low bit is a "reset-in-progress" flag that we set to signal when we need
to break waiters in order for the recovery task to grab the mutex. As
soon as the recovery task has the mutex, we can clear that flag (which
we do by incrementing the reset_counter thereby incrementing the gobal
reset epoch). By clearing that flag when the recovery task holds the
struct_mutex, we can forgo a second flag that simply tells GEM to ignore
the "reset-in-progress" flag.
The second flag we store in the reset_counter is whether the
reset failed and we consider the GPU terminally wedged. Whilst this flag
is set, all access to the GPU (at least through GEM rather than direct mmio
access) is verboten.
PS: Fun is in store, as in the future we want to move from a global
reset epoch to a per-engine reset engine with request recovery.

Since we need MST devices ready before we try to resume displays,
calling this after intel_display_resume() can result in some issues with
various laptop docks where the monitor won't turn back on after
suspending the system.
This order was originally changed in
commit e7d6f7d708 ("drm/i915: resume MST after reading back hw state")
In order to fix some unclaimed register errors, however the actual cause
of those has since been fixed.

In full gpu reset we prime all engines and reset domains corresponding to
each engine. Per engine reset is just a special case of this process
wherein only a single engine is reset. This change is aimed to modify
relevant functions to achieve this. There are some other steps we carry out
in case of engine reset which are addressed in later patches.
Reset func now accepts a mask of all engines that need to be reset. Where
per engine resets are supported, error handler populates the mask
accordingly otherwise all engines are specified.

Instead of duplicating the functionality now that we no longer need
to preserve dpll state we can move to using the upstream suspend helper.

gmux is a microcontroller built into dual GPU MacBook Pros.
On pre-retina MBPs, if we're the inactive GPU, we need apple-gmux
to temporarily switch DDC so that we can probe the panel's EDID.
The checks for CONFIG_VGA_ARB and CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO are necessary
because if either of them is disabled but gmux is present, the driver
would never load, even if we're the active GPU. (vga_default_device()
would evaluate to NULL and vga_switcheroo_handler_flags() would
evaluate to 0.)

The test for the qemu q35 south bridge added by commit

Move the ddi buffer translation programming to occur from the encoder
.pre_enable() hook, for just the ddi port we are enabling. Previously
we used to reprogram the translations for all ddi ports during
init and during power well enabling.

If we go into suspend with unclaimed access detected,
it would be nice to catch that access on a next suspend path.
So instead of just notifying about it, arm the unclaimed
mmio checks on suspend side.
We want to keep the asymmetry on resume, as if it was
on resume path, it was not driver that is responsible so
no point in arming mmio debugs.

If something, the usual suspect being bios, access hw
behind our back, don't let it slide into situation where
normal register access will detect this and spit out
a warn on into dmesg. On some bdw bioses this happens
during igt/bat run always and as there is not much we can
do about it, its better just to detect and flush this
explicitly on resume and only print a debug message.

Atm, we assert that the device is not suspended until the point when the
device is truly put to a suspended state. This is fine, but we can catch
more problems if we check that RPM refcount is non-zero. After that one
drops to zero we shouldn't access the device any more, even if the actual
device suspend may be delayed. Change assert_rpm_wakelock_held()
accordingly to check for a non-zero RPM refcount in addition to the
current device-not-suspended check.
For the new asserts to work we need to annotate every place explicitly in
the code where we expect that the device is powered. The places where we
only assume this, but may not hold an RPM reference:
- driver load
We assume the device to be powered until we enable RPM. Make this
explicit by taking an RPM reference around the load function.
- system and runtime sudpend/resume handlers
These handlers are called when the RPM reference becomes 0 and know the
exact point after which the device can get powered off. Disable the
RPM-reference-held check for their duration.
- the IRQ, hangcheck and RPS work handlers
These handlers are flushed in the system/runtime suspend handler
before the device is powered off, so it's guaranteed that they won't
run while the device is powered off even though they don't hold any
RPM reference. Disable the RPM-reference-held check for their duration.
In all these cases we still check that the device is not suspended.
These explicit annotations also have the positive side effect of
documenting our assumptions better.
This caught additional WARNs from the atomic modeset path, those should
be fixed separately.

The cherryview device shares many characteristics with the valleyview
device. When support was added to the driver for cherryview, the
corresponding device info structure included .is_valleyview = 1.
This is not correct and leads to some confusion.
This patch changes .is_valleyview to .is_cherryview in the cherryview
device info structure and simplifies the IS_CHERRYVIEW macro.
Then where appropriate, instances of IS_VALLEYVIEW are replaced with
IS_VALLEYVIEW || IS_CHERRYVIEW or equivalent.

In order to avoid accessing GPU registers while GPU is suspended cancel
the hangcheck work before calling intel_suspend_complete which actually
puts the GPU to suspend. Otherwise hangcheck might do MMIO reads to a
suspended GPU.
Placement before intel_guc_suspend is imitated from i915_drm_suspend
which cancels the work at i915_gem_suspend, to keep the functions
similar.
On VLV systems, namely BYT, this was causing an error during runtime
suspend cycle:

Beginning with gen7, newer devices repetitively redefine values
for the device info structure members. This patch simplifies the
structure definitions by grouping member value definitions into the
existing GEN7_FEATURES #define and into the new GEN7_LP_FEATURES
and HSW_FEATURES #defines.
Specifically, GEN_DEFAULT_PIPEOFFSETS and IVB_CURSOR_OFFSETS are
added to GEN7_FEATURES and subsequent IVB definitions are simplified.
VLV_FEATURES is defined to differentiate and simplify the
gen7 low power (LP) devices.
HSW_FEATURES is defined and used to simplify all HSW+ devices
except for LP.

During suspend-to-idle we need to keep the DMC firmware active and DC6
enabled, since otherwise we won't reach deep system power states like
PC9/10. The lead for this came from Nivedita who noticed that the
kernel's turbostat tool didn't report any PC9/10 residency change
across an 'echo freeze > /sys/power/state'.

Handle DC off as a power well where enabling the power well will prevent
the DMC to enter selected DC states (required around modesets and Aux
A). Disabling the power well will allow DC states again. For now the
highest DC state is DC6 for Skylake and DC5 for Broxton but will be
configurable for Skylake in a later patch.

We need to initialize the display core part early, before initializing
the rest of the display power state. This is also described in the bspec
termed "Display initialization sequence". Atm we run this sequence
during driver loading after power domain HW state initialization which
is too late and during runtime suspend/resume which is unneeded and can
interere with DMC functionality which handles HW resources toggled
by this init/uninit sequence automatically. The init sequence must be
run as the first step of HW power state initialization and during
system resume. The uninit sequence must be run during system suspend.
To address the above move the init sequence to the initial HW power
state setup and the uninit sequence to a new power domains suspend
function called during system suspend.
As part of the init sequence we also have to reprogram the DMC firmware
as it's lost across a system suspend/resume cycle.
After this change CD clock initialization during driver loading will
happen only later after other dependent HW/SW parts are initialized,
while during system resume it will get initialized as the last step of
the init sequence. This distinction can be removed by some refactoring
of platform independent parts. I left this refactoring out from this
series since I didn't want to change non-SKL parts. This is a TODO for
later.

Currently during system s/r we enable/disable DC6, so before we do so
make sure that the firmware loading is complete.
Note that whether we need to enable DC6 for S3/S4 is still open. At
least the firmware program is lost during S3 and we need to reprogram it
after resuming. Until this is clarified we keep the current behavior and
enable/disable DC6.

This removes two anti-patterns:
- Locking shouldn't be used to synchronize with async work (of any
form, whether callbacks, workers or other threads). This is what the
mutex_lock/unlock seems to have been for in intel_csr_load_program.
Instead ordering should be ensured with the generic
wait_for_completion()/complete(). Or more specific functions
provided by the core kernel like e.g.
flush_work()/cancel_work_sync() in the case of synchronizing with a
work item.
- Don't invent own completion like the following code did with the
(already removed) wait_for(csr_load_status_get()) pattern - it's
really hard to get these right when you want them to be _really_
correct (and be fast) in all cases. Furthermore it's easier to read
code using the well-known primitives than new ones using
non-standard names.
Before enabling/disabling DC6 check if the firmware is loaded
successfully. This is guaranteed during runtime s/r, since otherwise we
don't enable RPM, but not during system s/r.
Note that it's still unclear whether we need to enable/disable DC6
during system s/r, until that's clarified, keep the current behavior and
enable/disable DC6.
Also after this patch there is a race during system s/r where the
firmware may not be loaded yet, that's addressed in an upcoming patch.

Kabylake is a Intel® Processor containing Intel® HD Graphics
following Skylake.
It is Gen9p5, so it inherits everything from Skylake.
Let's start by adding the platform separated from Skylake
but reusing most of all features, functions etc. Later we
rebase the PCI-ID patch without is_skylake=1
so we don't replace what original Author did there.
Few IS_SKYLAKEs if statements are not being covered by this patch
on purpose:
- Workarounds: Kabylake is derivated from Skylake H0 so no
W/As apply here.
- GuC: A following patch removes Kabylake support with an
explanation: No firmware available yet.
- DMC/CSR: Done in a separated patch since we need to be carefull
and load the version for revision 7 since
Kabylake is Skylake H0.

Mmio register access after dc6/dc5 entry is not allowed when
DC6 power states are enabled according to bspec (bspec-id 0527),
so enabling dc6 as the last call in suspend flow.
Addtional note from Imre:
Currently we keep DC6 enabled during modesets and DPAUX transfers, which
is not allowed according to the specification. This can lead at least to
PLL locking failures, DPAUX timeouts and prevent deeper package power
states (PC9/10). Fix this for now by enabling DC6 only when we know the
above events (modeset, DPAUX) can't happen.
This a temporary solution as some issues are still unsolved as described
in [1] and [2], we'll address those as a follow-up.

This patch remove the function call to set the firmware
loading status as uninitialized during suspend.
Dmc firmware will restore the firmware in normal suspend. In previous
patch added a check to directly read the hardware status and load
the firmware if got reset during resume from suspend-hibernation.

Virtualized systems often use a virtual P2X4 south bridge.
Detect this in intel_detect_pch and make a best guess as to which PCH
we should be using.
This was seen on vmware esxi hypervisor. When passing the graphics device
through to a guest, it can not pass through the PCH. Instead it simulates
a P2X4 southbridge.

Runtime suspends disabled all interrupts, so in order to get them back
fully we need to also do the HPD irq setup on runtime resume. Except
on VLV/CHV where the display interrupt initialization is part of the
display power well powerup.

The driver doesn't support UMS any more, so set DRIVER_MODESET by default,
remove the legacy s/r callbacks, and rename the s/r functions to make it more clear
they're only in use by switcheroo now.
Also remove an obsolete comment about atomic. Normal updates are supported only
async updates aren't yet.

using an explicit blacklist for the GENs/BIOS vendors where the issue was
reported. Later there we had reports of the same failure on platforms not on
this list.
To my best knowledge the correct thing to do is still to put the device to PCI
D3 state during hibernation, see [1] and [2] for the reasons. This also aligns
with our future plans to unify more the runtime and system suspend/resume
paths. Since an exact blacklist seems to be impractical (multiple GENs and
BIOS vendors are affected) apply the workaround on everything pre GEN6.

Dear git bisect user,
Even though this is the patch that introduced the WARN() you're
bisecting, please notice that it's very likely that the problem you're
facing was already present before this commit. In other words: this
commit adds code to detect errors and give WARN()s about them, but the
errors were already there.
In order to continue your debug, please use the i915.mmio_debug
option, check the backtraces and try to discover which read or write
operation is causing the error message. Then check if this is
happening because the register does not exist or because its power
well is down when the operation is being done.
On my SKL machine, if I use i915.mmio_debug=999, this patch triggers
42 WARNs just by booting. I didn't investigate them yet. Normal users
are only going to get a single WARN due to the default i915.mmio_debug
setting.

Instead of all the ad-hoc updating, duplicate the old state first
before reading out the hw state, then restore it.
intel_display_resume is a new function that duplicates the sw state,
then reads out the hw state, and commits the old state.
intel_display_setup_hw_state now only reads out the atomic state.

If the user disables the GPU reset using the i915.reset parameter and
one occurs, report that we failed to reset the GPU. If we return early,
as we currently do, then we leave all state intact (with a hung GPU)
and clients block forever waiting for their requests to complete.

Since we only support modesetting by default (disabling modesetting on
the command line prevents i915.ko from loading), having a parameter to
disable modesstting by default is superfluous, i.e. saying
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=n is equivalent to CONFIG_DRM_I915=n.

We have enough generic hotplug functions sprinkled all over i915_irq.c
to warrant moving them to a file of their own. This should further
underline the distinction between generic code in the new file and
platform specific hotplug and irq code that remains in i915_irq.c.
Add new intel_hpd_init_work to keep work functions static, and rename

We're not ready yet to make it atomic, we calculate some state in
advance, but without atomic plane support atomic the hw readout will
fail.
It's required to revert this commit to revert the atomic hw
state readout patch.

Calculate all state using a normal transition, but afterwards fudge
crtc->state->active back to its old value. This should still allow
state restore in setup_hw_state to work properly.
Calling intel_set_mode will cause intel_display_set_init_power to be
called, make sure init_power gets set again afterwards.

We need to re-init the display hardware when going out of suspend. This
includes:
- Hooking the PCH to the reset logic
- Restoring CDCDLK
- Enabling the DDB power
Among those, only the CDCDLK one is a bit tricky. There's some
complexity in that:
- DPLL0 (which is the source for CDCLK) has two VCOs, each with a set
of supported frequencies. As eDP also uses DPLL0 for its link rate,
once DPLL0 is on, we restrict the possible eDP link rates the chosen
VCO.
- CDCLK also limits the bandwidth available to push pixels.
So, as a first step, this commit restore what the BIOS set, until I can
do more testing.
In case that's of interest for the reviewer, I've unit tested the
function that derives the decimal frequency field:

This patch fixes a timing issue that causes a GPU hang when the system
comes out of power saving.
During pm_resume, We are submitting batchbuffers before enabling
Interrupts this is causing us to miss the context switch interrupt,

The above patch added a call to init_context() to fix an issue introduced
by a previous patch. But, it then opened up a small timing window for the

GPU.

Display Context Save and Restore support is needed for
various SKL Display C states like DC5, DC6.
This implementation is added based on first version of DMC CSR program
that we received from h/w team.
Here we are using request_firmware based design.
Finally this firmware should end up in linux-firmware tree.
For SKL platform its mandatory to ensure that we load this
csr program before enabling DC states like DC5/DC6.
As CSR program gets reset on various conditions, we should ensure
to load it during boot and in future change to be added to load
this system resume sequence too.

package. Each individual program binary contains the header and the payload
sections whose size is specified in the header section. This changes are done

I noticed this only by reading the code. To my knowledge it shouldn't
cause any real problems at the moment, since the power well backing this
register remains on across a runtime s/r. This may change once
system-wide s0ix functionality is enabled in the kernel.

Some BIOSes (e.g. the one on the Minnowboard) don't save/restore this
reg. If it's unlocked, we can just restore the previous value, and if
it's locked (in case the BIOS re-programmed it for us) the write will be
ignored and we'll still have "did it move" sanity check in the PM code to
warn us if something is still amiss.

On CHV, PUNIT team confirmed that 'VLV_GFX_CLK_STATUS_BIT' is not a
sticky bit and it will always be set. So ignore Check for previous

With the two-step reset counter increments which braket the actual
reset code and the subsequent wake-up we're guaranteeing that all the
lockless waiters _will_ be woken up. And since we unconditionally bail
out of waits with -EAGAIN (or -EIO) in that case there is not risk of
lost interrupt enabling bits when the lockless wait code races against
a gpu reset.
Let's remove this FIXME as resolved then.

drm/i915: add poweroff_late handler
The problem seems to be that after the kernel puts the device into D3
the BIOS still tries to access it, or otherwise assumes that it's in D0.
This is clearly bogus, since ACPI mandates that devices are put into D3
by the OSPM if they are not wake-up sources. In the future we want to
unify more of the driver's runtime and system suspend paths, for example
by skipping all the system suspend/hibernation hooks if the device is
runtime suspended already. Accordingly for all other platforms the goal
is still to properly power down the device during hibernation.

other vendors (including mobile and desktop, GEN4 and non-GEN4) seem
to work fine. Based on this apply the workaround on all GEN4 Lenovo
platforms.

Commit 03dae59c72 ("drm/i915: Ditch UMS config option") removed
CONFIG_DRM_I915_UMS from the Kconfig file, but i915_drv.c still
references this option in two #ifndef statements.
As an undefined config option will always be 'false', we can drop
the #ifndefs alltogether and adapt the printed error message.
This inconsistency was found with the undertaker tool.

When run as a timer, i915_hangcheck_elapsed() must adhere to all the
rules of running in a softirq context. This is advantageous to us as we
want to minimise the risk that a driver bug will prevent us from
detecting a hung GPU. However, that is irrelevant if the driver bug
prevents us from resetting and recovering. Still it is prudent not to
rely on mutexes inside the checker, but given the coarseness of
dev->struct_mutex doing so is extremely hard.
Give in and run from a work queue, i.e. outside of softirq.

We don't have full atomic modeset support yet, but the "nuclear
pageflip" subset of functionality (i.e., plane operations only) should
be ready. Allow the user to force atomic on for debug purposes, or for
fixed-purpose embedded devices that will only use atomic for plane
updates.
The term 'nuclear' is used here instead of 'atomic' to make it clear
that this doesn't allow full atomic modeset support, just a (very
useful) subset of the atomic functionality.
We'll drop the kernel parameter and unconditionally enable atomic in a
future patch once all of the necessary pieces are in.

It seems in the past we have BDW with PCH not been propperly identified
and we force it to be LPT and we were warning !IS_HASWELL on propper identification.
Now that products are out there we are receiveing logs with this incorrect WARN.
And also according to local tests on all production BDW here ULT or HALO we don't
need this force anymore. So let's clean this block for real.

Atm, we don't disable RPS interrupts and related work items before
resetting the GPU. This may interfere with the following GPU
initialization and cause RPS interrupts to show up in PM_IIR too early
before calling gen6_enable_rps_interrupts() (triggering a WARN there).
Solve this by disabling RPS interrupts and flushing any related work
items before resetting the GPU.

Otherwise the MST resume paths can hit DPMS paths
which hit state checker paths, which hit WARN_ON,
because the state checker is inconsistent with the
hw.
This fixes a bunch of WARN_ON's on resume after
undocking.

Clear the video overlay state on GPU reset. Any pending overlay request
in the ring has been nuked, and the display itself gets reset. So we
pretty much lose all state here. Adjust the software state to match so
that the next "putimage" will restore things to working order.

On gen4 and earlier the GPU reset also resets the display, so we should
protect against concurrent modeset operations. Grab all the modeset locks
around the entire GPU reset dance, remebering first ti dislogde any
pending page flip to make sure we don't deadlock. Any pageflip coming
in between these two steps should fail anyway due to reset_in_progress,
so this should be safe.
This fixes a lot of failed asserts in the modeset code when there's a
modeset racing with the reset. Naturally the asserts aren't happy when
the expected state has disappeared.

restore after the GPU reset, and also re-init clock gating.

It happens on occasion that developers of generic user-space applications
abuse the dumb buffer API to get hold of drm buffers that they can both
mmap() and use for GPU acceleration, using the assumptions that dumb buffers
and buffers available for GPU are
a) The same type and can be aribtrarily type-casted.
b) fully coherent.
This patch makes the most widely used drivers warn nicely when that happens,
the next step will be to fail.

With the deprecation of UMS, and by association DRI1, we have a tough
choice when updating the ring access routines. We either rewrite the
DRI1 routines blindly without testing (so likely to be broken) or take
the liberty of declaring them no longer supported and remove them
entirely. This takes the latter approach.

After the previous patch RPS disabling doesn't depend any more on the
first level interrupts being disabled, so we can move it everywhere
earlier. Doing so let's us think about the uninitialization steps
afterwards independently of any asynchronous RPS events that can happen
atm. It also makes the system/runtime suspend time RPS disabling more
uniform. Finally this gets rid of the WARN in
intel_suspend_gt_powersave(), which we can hit if a final RPS work runs
after we disabled the first level interrupts.

With this patch, the RPS sequence for runtime suspend/resume is
exactly like the sequence for S3 suspend/resume:
- flush_delayed_work(&dev_priv->rps.delayed_resume_work)
- intel_runtime_pm_disable_interrupts()
- intel_suspend_gt_powersave()
(suspended)
- intel_runtime_pm_enable_interrupts()
- intel_enable_gt_powersave()
With this, we get rid of WARNs that are currently intermittently
triggered by the system-suspend-execbuf subtest of runtime PM. Notice
that these WARNs could also be triggered in other ways that involved
doing lots of RPM suspend/resume cycles just after a system S3 resume.

We want to run intel_uncore_early_sanitize() before we touch any
registers, because on BDW, when we resume, the FPGA_DBG_RM_NOCLAIM bit
is set, so we need to clear it - through intel_uncore_early_sanitize()
- before we do anything else. With the current code, we don't clear
the bit before our first register access, so we print a WARN
complaining about an unclaimed register error.

Because, really, the abstraction is not working for us. It is nice for
VLV, but doesn't add anything useful on SNB/HSW/BDW. We want to change
this code due to a recently-discovered bug, but we can't seem to find
a nice solution that repects the current abstraction. So let's kill
intel_resume_prepare() and its friends, and add an equivalent
implementation to both its callers.
Also, look at the diffstat!

The suspend_late handler saves some registers and powers off the device,
so it doesn't have a big overhead. Calling it at S4 poweroff_late time
makes the power off handling identical to the S3 suspend and S4 freeze
handling, so do this for consistency.

By now the S4 freeze/thaw and S3 suspend/resume events are handled the
same way, so we can rename the freeze/thaw internal helpers to
suspend/resume accordingly to make clearer what the helpers do. Also
rename i915_resume_early to i915_drm_resume_early aligning it with the
rest of the helper names.

We already disable everything during S4 freeze, except the PCI device
itself. There is no reason why we couldn't disable that too and doing
so allows us to unify these handlers in the next patch with the
corresponding S3 suspend/resume handlers.

To avoid processing hotplug events we disable connector polling for the
duration of S3 suspend. We also disable it for S4 freeze, and keep it
disabled after S4 thaw. This won't prevent though hotplug processing,
since we re-enable interrupts anyway. There is also no need to prevent
it at that time, since we reinitialize everything during thaw, so the
device is in a consistent state. So to simplify things enable polling
during thaw, which will allow us to handle S4 thaw the same way as S3
resume in an upcoming patch.

Checking for GT faults is not specific in any way to S4 thaw, so do it
also during S3 resume, S4 restore and driver load time. This allows us to
unify the Sx handlers in an upcoming patch.

The logic to skip restoring GTT mappings was added to speed up
suspend/resume, but not on old GENs where not restoring them caused
problems. The check for old GENs is based on the existence of OpRegion,
but this doesn't work since opregion is initialized only after
the check. So we end up always restoring the mappings.
On my BYT - which has OpRegion - skipping restoring the mappings during
suspend doesn't work, I get a GPU hang after resume. Also the logic of
when to allow the optimization during S4 is reversed: we should allow it
during S4 thaw but not during S4 restore, but atm we have it the other
way around in the code.
Since correctness wins over optimal code and since the optimization
wasn't used anyway I decided not to try to fix it at this point, but
just remove it. This allows us to unify the S3 and S4 handlers in the
following patches.

If the device is suspended already through the switcheroo interface we
shouldn't suspend it again or resume it after suspend. We have the
corresponding check for S3 suspend already, add it for all the other
S3 and S4 handlers. Also move the check from i915_resume_early() to
i915_resume_legacy(), so that it's done in the high level handler for
all PM events.

During switcheroo/legacy suspend we don't call the suspend_late handler
but when resuming afterwards we call resume_early. This happened to work
so far, since suspend_late only disabled the PCI device. This changed in

drm/i915: Sharing platform specific sequence between runtime and system susp
after which we also saved/restored the VLV Gunit HW state in
suspend_late/resume_early. So now since we don't save the state during
suspend a following resume will restore a corrupted state.
Fix this by calling the suspend_late handler during both switcheroo and
legacy suspend.

i915_suspend() is called from the DRM legacy S3 suspend/S4 freeze paths
and the switcheroo suspend path. For switcheroo we only ever need to
perform a full suspend (PM_EVENT_SUSPEND) and for the DRM legacy path
we can handle the S4 freeze (PM_EVENT_FREEZE) the same way as S3
suspend. The only difference atm between suspend and freeze is that
during freeze we don't disable the PCI device, but there is no reason
why we can't do so. So unify the two cases to reduce complexity.
Note that for the DRM legacy case the thaw event is not handled, so
we disable the display before creating the hibernation image and it
won't get re-enabled until reboot. We could fix this leaving the
display enabled for the image creation/writing (if we care enough
about UMS), but this can be done as a follow-up.

During S4 freeze we don't call intel_suspend_complete(), which would
save the gunit HW state, but during S4 thaw/restore events we call
intel_resume_prepare() which restores it, thus ending up in a corrupted
HW state.
Fix this by calling intel_suspend_complete() from the corresponding
freeze_late event handler.

The legacy DRM suspend logic (effective in UMS) doesn't handle any S4 thaw
events so we don't need to care about it either. Only S3 suspend and S4
freeze events are handled. Leave an assert behind to be sure.

Without this real gpu hangs only log output at info level, which gets
filtered away by piglit's testrunner.

that at least the automatic igt dmesg filtering still picks it up.

v4: Message is in between hw and sw reset, so switch verb to
continuous form.

Grab bag for all the special cases:
- i9xx_check_fifo_underruns is only called from crtc_enable hooks,
i.e. process context.
- i915_enable_asle_pipestat is only called from interrupt postinstall
hooks. So again process context.
- gen8_irq_power_well_post_enable is called from the runtime pm code,
which again means process context.
- The open-coded hpd_irq_setup loop in _thaw is also running in process
context.
So for all of them the plain _irq variant is sufficient.

One step closer to dropping all the drm_bus_* code:
Add a driver->set_busid() callback and make all drivers use the generic
helpers. Nouveau is the only driver that uses two different bus-types with
the same drm_driver. This is totally broken if both buses are available on
the same machine (unlikely, but lets be safe). Therefore, we create two
different drivers for each platform during module_init() and set the
set_busid() callback respectively.

On BDW we're seeing a problem that after we runtime resume, the
outputs connected to DDI C are not detected: they don't appear in the
SDEISR register and GMBUS transactions don't work. They stop working
at the moment we call intel_opregion_notify_adapter() during runtime
suspend, but they don't go back to work when we call the same function
during runtime resume. They only work after we do a modeset and call
intel_opregion_notify_encoder(), but this point is already too late.
While debugging, I tried to pass PCI_D3hot which is the value that
matches the spec, and it seems to have solved the problem. I couldn't
find any explanation of why this solves the problem, but there's also
no documented explanation - besides our code and git log - of why
Haswell should use PCI_D1, so keep this for now in order to keep BDW
runtime PM working.
Also add a comment to point the fact that there's no spec documenting
all the weirdness involved here.

Before sharing common parts between the system and runtime s/r
handlers we WARNed if the runtime s/r handlers were called on GENs that
didn't support RPM. But this WARN is not correct if the same handler is
called from the system s/r path, since that can happen on any platform.
This also broke system s/r on old platforms.

Atm we may leave eDP VDD enabled during system suspend after the CRTCs
are disabled through an HPD->DPCD read event. So disable VDD during
suspend at a point when no HPDs can occur.
Note that runtime suspend doesn't have the same problem, since there the
RPM ref held by VDD provides already the needed serialization.

Make sure these work handlers don't run after we system suspend or
unload the driver. Note that we don't cancel the handlers during runtime
suspend. That could lead to a lockup, since we take a runtime PM ref
from the handlers themselves. Fortunaltely canceling there is not needed
since the RPM ref itself provides for the needed serialization.

This is happening since wake is not enabled and Gunit registers are not restored.
For this system suspend/resume paths need to follow save/restore and additional
platform specific setup in suspend_complete and resume_prepare.
suspend_complete is shared unconditionaly for VLV, HSW, BDW. resume_prepare for
HSW and BDW has pc8 disabling which is needed during thaw_early so sharing
uncondtionally. For VLV and SNB runtime resume specific sequence exists.

Rather than take and release the console_lock() around a non-existent
DRM_I915_FBDEV, move the lock acquisation into the callee where it will
be compiled out by the config option entirely. This includes moving the
deferred fb_set_suspend() dance and encapsulating it entirely within
intel_fbdev.c.

Although POST_SYNC brought a bit of stability to Semaphores on BDW
it didn't solved all issues and some hungs can still occour when
semaphores are enabled on BDW. Also some sloweness can be found on some
igt tests, althoguth it apparently doesn't affect real workloads.
Besides that, no real performance gain was found on our tests with different
and even multiple workloads.
Let's disable it again for now. At least until we are sure it is safe
to re-enable it.

When I moved the irq disable down to after display disable,
I didn't realise the gt suspend also required irqs off, so move it
down as well.
Fixes WARNs seen at suspend/resume time.

On VLV, after i915_pm_suspend display power wells are staying
power ungated. So, after initiating mem sleep "echo mem > /sys/power/state"
Display is staing D0 State. There might be better way/place to power gate
these wells. Also, we need to make sure that if wells are power gated due to
DPMS OFF sequence, they need not be turned off by i915_pm_suspend again.

To achieve further power savings during system freeze (aka connected
standby, or s0ix) we have to send a PCI_D1 opregion notification. As
the information about the state we're entering (system freeze,
suspend to ram or suspend to disk) is only available through the ACPI
subsystem, make this support depend on the relevant kconfig option.
Things will still work if this option isn't set, albeit with less than
optimial power saving.
This also fixes a compile breakage when the option is not set introduced
in

Some drivers need to be able to have a perfect race-free fbcon setup.
Current drivers only enable hotplug processing after the call to
drm_fb_helper_initial_config which leaves a tiny but important race.
This race is especially noticable on embedded platforms where the
driver itself enables the voltage for the hdmi output, since only then
will monitors (after a bit of delay, as usual) respond by asserting
the hpd pin.
Most of the infrastructure is already there with the split-out
drm_fb_helper_init. And drm_fb_helper_initial_config already has all
the required locking to handle concurrent hpd events since

drm/fb-helper: improve drm_fb_helper_initial_config locking
The only missing bit is making drm_fb_helper_hotplug_event save
against concurrent calls of drm_fb_helper_initial_config. The only
unprotected bit is the check for fb_helper->fb.
With that drivers can first initialize the fb helper, then enabel
hotplug processing and then set up the initial config all in a
completely race-free manner. Update kerneldoc and convert i915 as a
proof of concept.
Feature requested by Thierry since his tegra driver atm reliably boots
slowly enough to misses the hotplug event for an external hdmi screen,
but also reliably boots to quickly for the hpd pin to be asserted when
the fb helper calls into the hdmi ->detect function.

It is possible that, by the time we run i915_drm_freeze(),
delayed_resume_work was already queued but did not run yet. If it
still didn't run after intel_runtime_pm_disable_interrupts(), by the
time it runs it will try to change the interrupt registers with the
interrupts already disabled, which will trigger a WARN. We can
reliably reproduce this with the pm_rpm system-suspend test case.
In order to avoid the problem, we have to flush the work before
disabling the interrupts. We could also cancel the work instead of
flushing it, but that would require us to put a runtime PM reference -
and any other resource we may need in the future - in case the work
was already queued, so I believe flushing the work is more
future-proof, although less efficient. But I can also change this part
if someone requests.
Another thing I tried was to move the intel_suspend_gt_powersave()
call to before intel_runtime_pm_disable_interrupts(), but since that
function needs to be called after the interrupts are already disabled,
due to dev_priv->rps.work, this strategy didn't work.

We should be taking the right power well refs these days, so this
shouldn't be necessary. It also gets in the way of re-using these
routines for S0iX states, as those need all the power saving features
enabled.

Atm, the forcewake refcount will be incorrectly set to zero during
system suspend if there is any reference held via the
i915_forcewake_user debugfs entry.
Fix this by simply not zeroing the sw counters during suspend and
restoring the original state using them. Note that the only other
places where we zeroed the counters were driver load and unload time,
where it was redundant anyway.

seems a bit pointless. So just use the _PIPE3() macro instead.

BDW uses IVB cursor offsets.
Whithout this patch it is not possible to use multiple outputs with cursor
on BDW.
The cursor gets completely crazy because update position uses the wrong
cursor register for the second pipe.

If both KMS is disabled (by i915.modeset=0 or nomodeset parameters) and
UMS is disabled (by CONFIG_DRM_I915_UMS=n, the default), the user might
not be aware his setup is not supported. Inform the users (and, by
extension, the poor i915 developers having to read their dmesgs in bug
reports) why their graphics experience might be lacking.
A similar message was added on the UMS path in

Currently we do a full re-init of all interrupts after a gpu hang.
Which is pretty bad since we don't restore the interrupts we've
enabled at runtime correctly. Even with that addressed it's rather
horribly race.
But on g4x and later we only reset the gt and not the entire gpu.
Which means we only need to reset the GT interrupt bits. Which has the
nice benefit that vblank waits, pipe CRC interrupts and everything
else display related just keeps on working.
The downside is that gt interrupt handling (i.e. ring->get/put_irq) is
still racy. But as long as the gpu hang reliably wakes all waters and
we have a short time where the refcount drops to 0 we'll recover. So
not that bad really.
v2: Ville noticed that GTIMR and PMIMR don't get cleared, only the
subordinate per-ring registers. So let's rip out all the interrupt dancing.
The FIXME comment is still required though since the ring irq handling
happens at the per-ring interrupt mask registers, too.

After the split-out of crtc locks from the big mode_config.mutex
there's still two major areas it protects:
- Various connector probe states, like connector->status, EDID
properties, probed mode lists and similar information.
- The links from connector->encoder and encoder->crtc and other
modeset-relevant connector state (e.g. properties which control the
panel fitter).
The later is used by modeset operations. But they don't really care
about the former since it's allowed to e.g. enable a disconnected VGA
output or with a mode not in the probed list.
Thus far this hasn't been a problem, but for the atomic modeset
conversion Rob Clark needs to convert all modeset relevant locks into
w/w locks. This is required because the order of acquisition is
determined by how userspace supplies the atomic modeset data. This has
run into troubles in the detect path since the i915 load detect code
needs _both_ protections offered by the mode_config.mutex: It updates
probe state and it needs to change the modeset configuration to enable
the temporary load detect pipe.
The big deal here is that for the probe/detect users of this lock a
plain mutex fits best, but for atomic modesets we really want a w/w
mutex. To fix this lets split out a new connection_mutex lock for the
modeset relevant parts.
For simplicity I've decided to only add one additional lock for all
connector/encoder links and modeset configuration states. We have
piles of different modeset objects in addition to those (like bridges
or panels), so adding per-object locks would be much more effort.
Also, we're guaranteed (at least for now) to do a full modeset if we
need to acquire this lock. Which means that fine-grained locking is
fairly irrelevant compared to the amount of time the full modeset will
take.
I've done a full audit, and there's just a few things that justify
special focus:
- Locking in drm_sysfs.c is almost completely absent. We should
sprinkle mode_config.connection_mutex over this file a bit, but
since it already lacks mode_config.mutex this patch wont make the
situation any worse. This is material for a follow-up patch.
- omap has a omap_framebuffer_flush function which walks the
connector->encoder->crtc links and is called from many contexts.
Some look like they don't acquire mode_config.mutex, so this is
already racy. Again fixing this is material for a separate patch.
- The radeon hot_plug function to retrain DP links looks at
connector->dpms. Currently this happens without any locking, so is
already racy. I think radeon_hotplug_work_func should gain
mutex_lock/unlock calls for the mode_config.connection_mutex.
- Same applies to i915's intel_dp_hot_plug. But again, this is already
racy.
- i915 load_detect code needs to acquire this lock. Which means the
w/w dance due to Rob's work will be nicely contained to _just_ this
function.
I've added fixme comments everywhere where it looks suspicious but in
the sysfs code. After a quick irc discussion with Dave Airlie it
sounds like the lack of locking in there is due to sysfs cleanup fun
at module unload.

Atm, we disable GT power saving during the end of the suspend sequence
in i915_save_state(). Doing the disabling at that point seems arbitrary.
One reason to disable it early though is to have a quiescent HW state
before we do anything else (for example save registers). So move the
disabling earlier, which also takes care canceling of the deferred RPS
enabling work done by intel_disable_gt_powersave().
Note that after the move we'll call intel_disable_gt_powersave() only
in case modeset is enabled, but that's anyway the only case where we
have it enabled in the first place.

Currently user space can access GEM buffers mapped to GTT through
existing mappings concurrently while the platform specific suspend
handlers are running. Since these handlers may change the HW state in a
way that would break such accesses, remove the mappings before calling
the handlers. Spotted by Ville.
Also Chris pointed out that the lists that i915_gem_release_all_mmaps()
walks through need dev->struct_mutex, so take this lock. There is a
potential deadlock against a concurrent RPM resume, resolve this by
aborting and rescheduling the suspend (Daniel).
