bae57e3825 perf python: Add support to resolve tracepoint fields
Adding tp_getattro callback for sample event. It resolves tracepoint
fields in runtime.

It's now possible to access tracepoint fields in normal fashion like
hardcoded ones (see the example in the next patch).

1075fbb22f perf python: Add perf.tracepoint method
To get id of the tracepoint from subsystem and name strings. The
interface is:

  id = perf.tracepoint(sys, name)

In case of error -1 is returned.

It will be used to get python tracepoint event's config value for

85e37de3a9 perf python: Put perf.event objects into dictionary
Make perf.event object parts of the perf module dictionary so we can
address them by name.

The following objects/names are added:

  mmap_event
  lost_event
  comm_event
  task_event
  throttle_event
  task_event
  read_event
  sample_event
  switch_event

We can now use it in python script like:
  ...
  event = evlist.read_on_cpu(cpu)
  ...
  if not isinstance(event, perf.sample_event):

1b85337d06 tools lib api: Adopt fdarray class from perf's evlist
The extensible file description array that grew in the perf_evlist class
can be useful for other tools, as it is not something that only evlists
need, so move it to tools/lib/api/fd to ease sharing it.

v2: Don't use {} like in:

 libapi_dirs:
	$(QUIET_MKDIR)mkdir -p $(OUTPUT){fs,fd}/

in Makefiles, as it will not work in some systems, as in ubuntu13.10.

v3: Add fd/*.[ch] to LIBAPIKFS_SOURCES (Fix from Jiri Olsa)

v4: Leave the fcntl(fd, O_NONBLOCK) in the evlist layer, remains to
be checked if it is really needed there, but has no place in the
fdarray class (Fix from Jiri Olsa)

v5: Remove evlist details from fdarray grow/filter tests. Improve it a
bit doing more tests about expected internal state.

0c6332e9d8 perf python: Fix breakage introduced by the test_attr infrastructure
The test_attr infrastructure hooks on the sys_perf_event_open call,
checking if a variable is set and if so calling a function to intercept
calls and do the checking.

But both the variable and the function aren't on objects that are
linked on the python binding, breaking it:

  # perf test -v 15
15: Try 'use perf' in python, checking link problems :
  --- start ---
  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  ImportError: /home/acme/git/build/perf//python/perf.so: undefined symbol: test_attr__enabled
  ---- end ----
Try 'use perf' in python, checking link problems: FAILED!
  #

Fix it by moving the variable to one of the linked object files and
providing a stub for the function in the python.o object, that is only
linked in the python binding.

Now 'perf test' is happy again:

  # perf test 15
15: Try 'use perf' in python, checking link problems : Ok
  #

0da2e9c248 perf python: Initialize 'page_size' variable
The commit 0c1fe6b:

'perf tools: Have the page size value available for all tools'

Broke the python binding because the global variable 'page_size' is
initialized on the main() routine, that is not called when using
just the python binding, causing evlist.mmap() to fail because it

1d037ca164 perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variables
perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking
unused variables. The variable __used is defined to
__attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to
__attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is
also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning:
'__used__' attribute ignored

__unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition.
If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to
conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name
in its headers.

The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the
kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one
definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the
same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android.
This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with
__maybe_unused.

6a4bb04caa perf tools: Enable grouping logic for parsed events
This patch adds a functionality that allows to create event groups
based on the way they are specified on the command line. Adding
functionality to the '{}' group syntax introduced in earlier patch.

The current '--group/-g' option behaviour remains intact. If you
specify it for record/stat/top command, all the specified events
become members of a single group with the first event as a group
leader.

With the new '{}' group syntax you can create group like:
  # perf record -e '{cycles,faults}' ls

resulting in single event group containing 'cycles' and 'faults'
events, with cycles event as group leader.

All groups are created with regards to threads and cpus. Thus
recording an event group within a 2 threads on server with
4 CPUs will create 8 separate groups.

Examples (first event in brackets is group leader):

  # 1 group (cpu-clock,task-clock)
perf record --group -e cpu-clock,task-clock ls
  perf record -e '{cpu-clock,task-clock}' ls

  # 2 groups (cpu-clock,task-clock) (minor-faults,major-faults)
  perf record -e '{cpu-clock,task-clock},{minor-faults,major-faults}' ls

  # 1 group (cpu-clock,task-clock,minor-faults,major-faults)
  perf record --group -e cpu-clock,task-clock -e minor-faults,major-faults ls
  perf record -e '{cpu-clock,task-clock,minor-faults,major-faults}' ls

  # 2 groups (cpu-clock,task-clock) (minor-faults,major-faults)
  perf record -e '{cpu-clock,task-clock} -e '{minor-faults,major-faults}' \
   -e instructions ls

  # 1 group
  # (cpu-clock,task-clock,minor-faults,major-faults,instructions)
  perf record --group -e cpu-clock,task-clock \
   -e minor-faults,major-faults -e instructions ls perf record -e
'{cpu-clock,task-clock,minor-faults,major-faults,instructions}' ls

It's possible to use standard event modifier for a group, which spans
over all events in the group and updates each event modifier settings,
for example:

  # perf record -r '{faults:k,cache-references}:p'

resulting in ':kp' modifier being used for 'faults' and ':p' modifier
being used for 'cache-references' event.

727ab04edb perf evlist: Fix grouping of multiple events
The __perf_evsel__open routing was grouping just the threads for that
specific events per cpu when we want to group all threads in all events

So pass the xyarray with the first event, where the other events will be
able to get that first per cpu fd.

At some point top and record will switch to using perf_evlist__open that
takes care of this detail and probably will also handle the fallback
from hw to soft counters, etc.

c2a70653af perf evlist: Don't die if sample_{id_all|type} is invalid
Fixes two more cases where the python binding would not load:

. Not finding die(), which it shouldn't anyway, not good to just stop the

11 mmaps, one per thread since we didn't specify any CPU list, so we need one
mmap per thread and:

[root@felicio ~]# perf record -F 50000 --pid 26131
^M
^C[ perf record: Woken up 79 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 20.614 MB perf.data (~900639 samples) ]

[root@felicio ~]# perf report -D | grep PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE | cut -d/ -f2 | cut -d: -f1 | sort -n | uniq -c | sort -nr | nl
     1 371310 26131
     2 96516 26148
     3 95694 26149
     4 95203 26150
     5 7291 26143
     6 87 27049
     7 76 661
     8 60 29048
     9 47 618
    10 43 642
[root@felicio ~]#

Ok, one of the threads, 26151 was quiescent, so no samples there, but all the
others are there.

Then, if I specify one CPU:

[root@felicio ~]# perf record -F 50000 --pid 26131 --cpu 1
^C[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.680 MB perf.data (~29730 samples) ]

[root@felicio ~]# perf report -D | grep PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE | cut -d/ -f2 | cut -d: -f1 | sort -n | uniq -c | sort -nr | nl
     1 8444 26131
     2 2584 26149
     3 2518 26148
     4 2324 26150
     5 123 26143
     6 9 661
     7 9 29048
[root@felicio ~]#

This machine has two cores, so fewer threads appeared on the radar, and:

[root@felicio ~]# grep perf_event /proc/`pidof perf`/maps | nl
 1 7f484b922000-7f484b9a3000 rwxs 00000000 00:09 4064 anon_inode:[perf_event]
[root@felicio ~]#

Just one mmap, as now we can use just one per-cpu buffer instead of the
per-thread needed in the previous case.

For global profiling:

[root@felicio ~]# perf record -F 50000 -a
^C[ perf record: Woken up 26 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 7.128 MB perf.data (~311412 samples) ]

[root@felicio ~]# grep perf_event /proc/`pidof perf`/maps | nl
     1	7fb49b435000-7fb49b4b6000 rwxs 00000000 00:09 4064 anon_inode:[perf_event]
     2	7fb49b4b6000-7fb49b537000 rwxs 00000000 00:09 4064 anon_inode:[perf_event]
[root@felicio ~]#

It uses per-cpu buffers.

For just one thread:

[root@felicio ~]# perf record -F 50000 --tid 26148
^C[ perf record: Woken up 2 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.330 MB perf.data (~14426 samples) ]

[root@felicio ~]# perf report -D | grep PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE | cut -d/ -f2 | cut -d: -f1 | sort -n | uniq -c | sort -nr | nl
     1 9969 26148
[root@felicio ~]#

[root@felicio ~]# grep perf_event /proc/`pidof perf`/maps | nl
     1	7f286a51b000-7f286a59c000 rwxs 00000000 00:09 4064 anon_inode:[perf_event]
[root@felicio ~]#

94403f8863 perf events: Add stalled cycles generic event - PERF_COUNT_HW_STALLED_CYCLES
The new PERF_COUNT_HW_STALLED_CYCLES event tries to approximate
cycles the CPU does nothing useful, because it is stalled on a
cache-miss or some other condition.

5d2cd90922 perf evsel: Fix use of inherit
perf stat doesn't mmap and its perfectly fine for it to use task-bound
counters with inheritance.

So set the attr.inherit on the caller and leave the syscall itself to
validate it.

When the mmap fails perf_evlist__mmap will just emit a warning if this
is the failure reason.

We can fix that by defining PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT as a wrapper on
PyObject_HEAD_INIT, thanks to a trick found on biopython:

f6bbc1daac perf python: Fix build on 32-bit
Where there are lots of errors related to python methods receiving
'char *' for things like file open mode, which break the build, also
disable strict aliasing and fixup some other warnings. Now builds on
