6e5fb223e8 mm: sched: numa: Implement constant, per task Working Set Sampling (WSS) rate
Previously, to probe the working set of a task, we'd use
a very simple and crude method: mark all of its address
space PROT_NONE.

That method has various (obvious) disadvantages:

 - it samples the working set at dissimilar rates,
giving some tasks a sampling quality advantage
   over others.

 - creates performance problems for tasks with very
   large working sets

 - over-samples processes with large address spaces but
   which only very rarely execute

Improve that method by keeping a rotating offset into the
address space that marks the current position of the scan,
and advance it by a constant rate (in a CPU cycles execution
proportional manner). If the offset reaches the last mapped
address of the mm then it then it starts over at the first
address.

The per-task nature of the working set sampling functionality in this tree
allows such constant rate, per task, execution-weight proportional sampling
of the working set, with an adaptive sampling interval/frequency that
goes from once per 100ms up to just once per 8 seconds. The current
sampling volume is 256 MB per interval.

As tasks mature and converge their working set, so does the
sampling rate slow down to just a trickle, 256 MB per 8
seconds of CPU time executed.

This, beyond being adaptive, also rate-limits rarely
executing systems and does not over-sample on overloaded
systems.

[ In AutoNUMA speak, this patch deals with the effective sampling
rate of the 'hinting page fault'. AutoNUMA's scanning is
currently rate-limited, but it is also fundamentally
single-threaded, executing in the knuma_scand kernel thread,
so the limit in AutoNUMA is global and does not scale up with
the number of CPUs, nor does it scan tasks in an execution
  proportional manner.

So the idea of rate-limiting the scanning was first implemented
in the AutoNUMA tree via a global rate limit. This patch goes
beyond that by implementing an execution rate proportional
working set sampling rate that is not implemented via a single
  global scanning daemon. ]

[ Dan Carpenter pointed out a possible NULL pointer dereference in the
first version of this patch. ]

cbee9f88ec mm: numa: Add fault driven placement and migration
NOTE: This patch is based on "sched, numa, mm: Add fault driven
placement and migration policy" but as it throws away all the policy
to just leave a basic foundation I had to drop the signed-offs-by.

This patch creates a bare-bones method for setting PTEs pte_numa in the
context of the scheduler that when faulted later will be faulted onto the
node the CPU is running on. In itself this does nothing useful but any
placement policy will fundamentally depend on receiving hints on placement
from fault context and doing something intelligent about it.

CONFIG_COREDUMP also disables coredump-related sysctls, except for
suid_dumpable and related functions, which are necessary for ptrace.

fd4b616b0f sysctl: suppress kmemleak messages
register_sysctl_table() is a strange function, as it makes internal
allocations (a header) to register a sysctl_table. This header is a
handle to the table that is created, and can be used to unregister the
table. But if the table is permanent and never unregistered, the header
acts the same as a static variable.

Unfortunately, this allocation of memory that is never expected to be
freed fools kmemleak in thinking that we have leaked memory. For those
sysctl tables that are never unregistered, and have no pointer referencing
them, kmemleak will think that these are memory leaks:

unreferenced object 0xffff880079fb9d40 (size 192):

800179c9b8 fs: add link restrictions
This adds symlink and hardlink restrictions to the Linux VFS.

Symlinks:

A long-standing class of security issues is the symlink-based
time-of-check-time-of-use race, most commonly seen in world-writable
directories like /tmp. The common method of exploitation of this flaw
is to cross privilege boundaries when following a given symlink (i.e. a
root process follows a symlink belonging to another user). For a likely
incomplete list of hundreds of examples across the years, please see:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=/tmp

The solution is to permit symlinks to only be followed when outside
a sticky world-writable directory, or when the uid of the symlink and
follower match, or when the directory owner matches the symlink's owner.

Some pointers to the history of earlier discussion that I could find:

 1996 Aug, Zygo Blaxell

 1996 Oct, Andrew Tridgell

 2010 May, Kees Cook
  https://lkml.org/lkml/2010/5/30/144

Past objections and rebuttals could be summarized as:

 - Violates POSIX.
   - POSIX didn't consider this situation and it's not useful to follow
a broken specification at the cost of security.
 - Might break unknown applications that use this feature.
   - Applications that break because of the change are easy to spot and
fix. Applications that are vulnerable to symlink ToCToU by not having
the change aren't. Additionally, no applications have yet been found
     that rely on this behavior.
 - Applications should just use mkstemp() or O_CREATE|O_EXCL.
   - True, but applications are not perfect, and new software is written
all the time that makes these mistakes; blocking this flaw at the
kernel is a single solution to the entire class of vulnerability.
 - This should live in the core VFS.
   - This should live in an LSM. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2010/5/31/135)
 - This should live in an LSM.
   - This should live in the core VFS. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/2/188)

Hardlinks:

On systems that have user-writable directories on the same partition
as system files, a long-standing class of security issues is the
hardlink-based time-of-check-time-of-use race, most commonly seen in
world-writable directories like /tmp. The common method of exploitation
of this flaw is to cross privilege boundaries when following a given
hardlink (i.e. a root process follows a hardlink created by another
user). Additionally, an issue exists where users can "pin" a potentially
vulnerable setuid/setgid file so that an administrator will not actually
upgrade a system fully.

The solution is to permit hardlinks to only be created when the user is
already the existing file's owner, or if they already have read/write
access to the existing file.

Many Linux users are surprised when they learn they can link to files
they have no access to, so this change appears to follow the doctrine
of "least surprise". Additionally, this change does not violate POSIX,
which states "the implementation may require that the calling process
has permission to access the existing file"[1].

This change is known to break some implementations of the "at" daemon,
though the version used by Fedora and Ubuntu has been fixed[2] for
a while. Otherwise, the change has been undisruptive while in use in
Ubuntu for the last 1.5 years.

The original patch from Richard Weinberger

Merge tag 'split-asm_system_h-for-linus-20120328' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-asm_system

Pull "Disintegrate and delete asm/system.h" from David Howells:
"Here are a bunch of patches to disintegrate asm/system.h into a set of
separate bits to relieve the problem of circular inclusion
  dependencies.

I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can
and made sure that they don't break.

The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular
dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to
optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2().

This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in
  asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h.

The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of
low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg.
memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that
aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()).

These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces:

    (1) asm/barrier.h

Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha.

    (2) asm/switch_to.h

Move switch_to() and related stuff here.

    (3) asm/exec.h

Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits
could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h.

    (4) asm/cmpxchg.h

Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and
frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg().

    (5) asm/bug.h

        Move die() and related bits.

    (6) asm/auxvec.h

        Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here.

Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis."

Fixed up some conflicts from other header file cleanups and moving code
around that has happened in the meantime, so David's testing is somewhat
weakened by that. We'll find out anything that got broken and fix it..

f1d38e423a Merge git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/sysctl
Pull sysctl updates from Eric Biederman:

 - Rewrite of sysctl for speed and clarity.

Insert/remove/Lookup in sysctl are all now O(NlogN) operations, and
are no longer bottlenecks in the process of adding and removing

sysctl is now focused on being a filesystem instead of system call
and the code can all be found in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c. Hopefully

1f87f0b52b sysctl: Move the implementation into fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c
Move the core sysctl code from kernel/sysctl.c and kernel/sysctl_check.c
into fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c.

Currently sysctl maintenance is hampered by the sysctl implementation
being split across 3 files with artificial layering between them.
Consolidate the entire sysctl implementation into 1 file so that
it is easier to see what is going on and hopefully allowing for
simpler maintenance.

For functions that are now only used in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c remove
their declarations from sysctl.h and make them static in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c

55af77969f x86: Panic on detection of stack overflow
Currently, messages are just output on the detection of stack
overflow, which is not sufficient for systems that need a
high reliability. This is because in general the overflow may
corrupt data, and the additional corruption may occur due to
reading them unless systems stop.

This patch adds the sysctl parameter
kernel.panic_on_stackoverflow and causes a panic when detecting
the overflows of kernel, IRQ and exception stacks except user
stack according to the parameter. It is disabled by default.

73efc0394e kernel/sysctl.c: add cap_last_cap to /proc/sys/kernel
Userspace needs to know the highest valid capability of the running
kernel, which right now cannot reliably be retrieved from the header files
only. The fact that this value cannot be determined properly right now
creates various problems for libraries compiled on newer header files
which are run on older kernels. They assume capabilities are available
which actually aren't. libcap-ng is one example. And we ran into the
same problem with systemd too.

Now the capability is exported in /proc/sys/kernel/cap_last_cap.

ec12cb7f31 sched: Accumulate per-cfs_rq cpu usage and charge against bandwidth
Account bandwidth usage on the cfs_rq level versus the task_groups to which
they belong. Whether we are tracking bandwidth on a given cfs_rq is maintained
under cfs_rq->runtime_enabled.

cfs_rq's which belong to a bandwidth constrained task_group have their runtime
accounted via the update_curr() path, which withdraws bandwidth from the global
pool as desired. Updates involving the global pool are currently protected
under cfs_bandwidth->lock, local runtime is protected by rq->lock.

This patch only assigns and tracks quota, no action is taken in the case that
cfs_rq->runtime_used exceeds cfs_rq->runtime_assigned.

571d76acda arch/tile: support signal "exception-trace" hook
This change adds support for /proc/sys/debug/exception-trace to tile.
Like x86 and sparc, by default it is set to "1", generating a one-line
printk whenever a user process crashes. By setting it to "2", we get
a much more complete userspace diagnostic at crash time, including
a user-space backtrace, register dump, and memory dump around the
address of the crash.

Some vestiges of the Tilera-internal version of this support are
removed with this patch (the show_crashinfo variable and the
arch_coredump_signal function). We retain a "crashinfo" boot parameter
which allows you to set the boot-time value of exception-trace.

17f60a7da1 capabilites: allow the application of capability limits to usermode helpers
There is no way to limit the capabilities of usermodehelpers. This problem
reared its head recently when someone complained that any user with
cap_net_admin was able to load arbitrary kernel modules, even though the user
didn't have cap_sys_module. The reason is because the actual load is done by
a usermode helper and those always have the full cap set. This patch addes new
sysctls which allow us to bound the permissions of usermode helpers.

/proc/sys/kernel/usermodehelper/bset
/proc/sys/kernel/usermodehelper/inheritable

You must have CAP_SYS_MODULE and CAP_SETPCAP to change these (changes are
&= ONLY). When the kernel launches a usermodehelper it will do so with these
as the bset and pI.

bfdc0b497f sysctl: restrict write access to dmesg_restrict
When dmesg_restrict is set to 1 CAP_SYS_ADMIN is needed to read the kernel
ring buffer. But a root user without CAP_SYS_ADMIN is able to reset
dmesg_restrict to 0.

This is an issue when e.g. LXC (Linux Containers) are used and complete

With this patch writing to dmesg_restrict is only allowed when root has

dfef6dcd35 unfuck proc_sysctl ->d_compare()
a) struct inode is not going to be freed under ->d_compare();
however, the thing PROC_I(inode)->sysctl points to just might.
Fortunately, it's enough to make freeing that sucker delayed,
provided that we don't step on its ->unregistering, clear
the pointer to it in PROC_I(inode) before dropping the reference
and check if it's NULL in ->d_compare().

b) I'm not sure that we *can* walk into NULL inode here (we recheck
dentry->seq between verifying that it's still hashed / fetching
dentry->d_inode and passing it to ->d_compare() and there's no
negative hashed dentries in /proc/sys/*), but if we can walk into
that, we really should not have ->d_compare() return 0 on it!
Said that, I really suspect that this check can be simply killed.

Use the buddy mechanism to implement yield_task_fair. This

We order the buddy selection in pick_next_entity to check
yield first, then last, then next. We need next to be able

455cd5ab30 kptr_restrict for hiding kernel pointers from unprivileged users
Add the %pK printk format specifier and the /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
sysctl.

The %pK format specifier is designed to hide exposed kernel pointers,
specifically via /proc interfaces. Exposing these pointers provides an
easy target for kernel write vulnerabilities, since they reveal the
locations of writable structures containing easily triggerable function
pointers. The behavior of %pK depends on the kptr_restrict sysctl.

If kptr_restrict is set to 0, no deviation from the standard %p behavior
occurs. If kptr_restrict is set to 1, the default, if the current user
(intended to be a reader via seq_printf(), etc.) does not have CAP_SYSLOG
(currently in the LSM tree), kernel pointers using %pK are printed as 0's.
If kptr_restrict is set to 2, kernel pointers using %pK are printed as
0's regardless of privileges. Replacing with 0's was chosen over the
default "(null)", which cannot be parsed by userland %p, which expects
"(nil)".

5091faa449 sched: Add 'autogroup' scheduling feature: automated per session task groups
A recurring complaint from CFS users is that parallel kbuild has
a negative impact on desktop interactivity. This patch
implements an idea from Linus, to automatically create task
groups. Currently, only per session autogroups are implemented,
but the patch leaves the way open for enhancement.

Implementation: each task's signal struct contains an inherited
pointer to a refcounted autogroup struct containing a task group
pointer, the default for all tasks pointing to the
init_task_group. When a task calls setsid(), a new task group
is created, the process is moved into the new task group, and a
reference to the preveious task group is dropped. Child
processes inherit this task group thereafter, and increase it's
refcount. When the last thread of a process exits, the
process's reference is dropped, such that when the last process
referencing an autogroup exits, the autogroup is destroyed.

At runqueue selection time, IFF a task has no cgroup assignment,
its current autogroup is used.

Autogroup bandwidth is controllable via setting it's nice level
through the proc filesystem:

  cat /proc/<pid>/autogroup

Displays the task's group and the group's nice level.

  echo <nice level> > /proc/<pid>/autogroup

Sets the task group's shares to the weight of nice <level> task.
Setting nice level is rate limited for !admin users due to the
abuse risk of task group locking.

The feature is enabled from boot by default if
CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP=y is selected, but can be disabled via
the boot option noautogroup, and can also be turned on/off on
the fly via:

  echo [01] > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled

... which will automatically move tasks to/from the root task group.

5f2b0ba4d9 x86, nmi_watchdog: Remove the old nmi_watchdog
Now that we have a new nmi_watchdog that is more generic and
sits on top of the perf subsystem, we really do not need the old
nmi_watchdog any more.

In addition, the old nmi_watchdog doesn't really work if you are
using the default clocksource, hpet. The old nmi_watchdog code
relied on local apic interrupts to determine if the cpu is still
alive. With hpet as the clocksource, these interrupts don't
increment any more and the old nmi_watchdog triggers false
postives.

This piece removes the old nmi_watchdog code and stubs out any
variables and functions calls. The stubs are the same ones used
by the new nmi_watchdog code, so it should be well tested.

eaf06b241b Restrict unprivileged access to kernel syslog
The kernel syslog contains debugging information that is often useful
during exploitation of other vulnerabilities, such as kernel heap
addresses. Rather than futilely attempt to sanitize hundreds (or
thousands) of printk statements and simultaneously cripple useful
debugging functionality, it is far simpler to create an option that
prevents unprivileged users from reading the syslog.

This patch, loosely based on grsecurity's GRKERNSEC_DMESG, creates the
dmesg_restrict sysctl. When set to "0", the default, no restrictions are
enforced. When set to "1", only users with CAP_SYS_ADMIN can read the
kernel syslog via dmesg(8) or other mechanisms.

518de9b39e fs: allow for more than 2^31 files
Robin Holt tried to boot a 16TB system and found af_unix was overflowing
a 32bit value :

<quote>

We were seeing a failure which prevented boot. The kernel was incapable
of creating either a named pipe or unix domain socket. This comes down
to a common kernel function called unix_create1() which does:

        atomic_inc(&unix_nr_socks);
        if (atomic_read(&unix_nr_socks) > 2 * get_max_files())
                goto out;

The function get_max_files() is a simple return of files_stat.max_files.
files_stat.max_files is a signed integer and is computed in
fs/file_table.c's files_init().

        n = (mempages * (PAGE_SIZE / 1024)) / 10;
        files_stat.max_files = n;

In our case, mempages (total_ram_pages) is approx 3,758,096,384
(0xe0000000). That leaves max_files at approximately 1,503,238,553.
This causes 2 * get_max_files() to integer overflow.

</quote>

Fix is to let /proc/sys/fs/file-nr & /proc/sys/fs/file-max use long
integers, and change af_unix to use an atomic_long_t instead of atomic_t.

get_max_files() is changed to return an unsigned long. get_nr_files() is
changed to return a long.

unix_nr_socks is changed from atomic_t to atomic_long_t, while not
strictly needed to address Robin problem.

Before patch (on a 64bit kernel) :
# echo 2147483648 >/proc/sys/fs/file-max
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
-18446744071562067968

After patch:
# echo 2147483648 >/proc/sys/fs/file-max
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
2147483648
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr

cffbc8aa33 fs: Convert nr_inodes and nr_unused to per-cpu counters
The number of inodes allocated does not need to be tied to the
addition or removal of an inode to/from a list. If we are not tied
to a list lock, we could update the counters when inodes are
initialised or destroyed, but to do that we need to convert the
counters to be per-cpu (i.e. independent of a lock). This means that
we have the freedom to change the list/locking implementation

7e360c38ab fs: allow for more than 2^31 files
Andrew,

Could you please review this patch, you probably are the right guy to
take it, because it crosses fs and net trees.

Note : /proc/sys/fs/file-nr is a read-only file, so this patch doesnt
depend on previous patch (sysctl: fix min/max handling in
__do_proc_doulongvec_minmax())

Thanks !

[PATCH V4] fs: allow for more than 2^31 files

Robin Holt tried to boot a 16TB system and found af_unix was overflowing
a 32bit value :

<quote>

We were seeing a failure which prevented boot. The kernel was incapable
of creating either a named pipe or unix domain socket. This comes down
to a common kernel function called unix_create1() which does:

        atomic_inc(&unix_nr_socks);
        if (atomic_read(&unix_nr_socks) > 2 * get_max_files())
                goto out;

The function get_max_files() is a simple return of files_stat.max_files.
files_stat.max_files is a signed integer and is computed in
fs/file_table.c's files_init().

        n = (mempages * (PAGE_SIZE / 1024)) / 10;
        files_stat.max_files = n;

In our case, mempages (total_ram_pages) is approx 3,758,096,384
(0xe0000000). That leaves max_files at approximately 1,503,238,553.
This causes 2 * get_max_files() to integer overflow.

</quote>

Fix is to let /proc/sys/fs/file-nr & /proc/sys/fs/file-max use long
integers, and change af_unix to use an atomic_long_t instead of
atomic_t.

get_max_files() is changed to return an unsigned long.
get_nr_files() is changed to return a long.

unix_nr_socks is changed from atomic_t to atomic_long_t, while not
strictly needed to address Robin problem.

Before patch (on a 64bit kernel) :
# echo 2147483648 >/proc/sys/fs/file-max
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
-18446744071562067968

After patch:
# echo 2147483648 >/proc/sys/fs/file-max
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
2147483648
# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr
704 0 2147483648

27b3d80a7b sysctl: fix min/max handling in __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax()
When proc_doulongvec_minmax() is used with an array of longs, and no
min/max check requested (.extra1 or .extra2 being NULL), we dereference a
NULL pointer for the second element of the array.

Noticed while doing some changes in network stack for the "16TB problem"

Fix is to not change min & max pointers in __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax(),
so that all elements of the vector share an unique min/max limit, like
proc_dointvec_minmax().

5e77190580 mm: compaction: add a tunable that decides when memory should be compacted and when it should be reclaimed
The kernel applies some heuristics when deciding if memory should be
compacted or reclaimed to satisfy a high-order allocation. One of these
is based on the fragmentation. If the index is below 500, memory will not
be compacted. This choice is arbitrary and not based on data. To help
optimise the system and set a sensible default for this value, this patch
adds a sysctl extfrag_threshold. The kernel will only compact memory if
the fragmentation index is above the extfrag_threshold.

ab3c68ee5f [S390] debug: enable exception-trace debug facility
The exception-trace facility on x86 and other architectures prints
traces to dmesg whenever a user space application crashes.
s390 has such a feature since ages however it is called
userprocess_debug and is enabled differently.
This patch makes sure that whenever one of the two procfs files

/proc/sys/kernel/userprocess_debug
/proc/sys/debug/exception-trace

is modified the contents of the second one changes as well.
That way we keep backwards compatibilty but also support the same
interface like other architectures do.
Besides that the output of the traces is improved since it will now
also contain the corresponding filename of the vma (when available)
where the process caused a fault or trap.

00b7c3395a sysctl: refactor integer handling proc code
(Based on Octavian's work, and I modified a lot.)

As we are about to add another integer handling proc function a little
bit of cleanup is in order: add a few helper functions to improve code
readability and decrease code duplication.

In the process a bug is also fixed: if the user specifies a number
with more then 20 digits it will be interpreted as two integers
(e.g. 10000...13 will be interpreted as 100.... and 13).

Behavior for EFAULT handling was changed as well. Previous to this
patch, when an EFAULT error occurred in the middle of a write
operation, although some of the elements were set, that was not
acknowledged to the user (by shorting the write and returning the
number of bytes accepted). EFAULT is now treated just like any other
errors by acknowledging the amount of bytes accepted.

332fbdbca3 lockup_detector: Touch_softlockup cleanups and softlockup_tick removal
Just some code cleanup to make touch_softlockup clearer and remove the
softlockup_tick function as it is no longer needed.

Also remove the /proc softlockup_thres call as it has been changed to
watchdog_thres.

58687acba5 lockup_detector: Combine nmi_watchdog and softlockup detector
The new nmi_watchdog (which uses the perf event subsystem) is very
similar in structure to the softlockup detector. Using Ingo's
suggestion, I combined the two functionalities into one file:
kernel/watchdog.c.

Now both the nmi_watchdog (or hardlockup detector) and softlockup
detector sit on top of the perf event subsystem, which is run every
60 seconds or so to see if there are any lockups.

To detect hardlockups, cpus not responding to interrupts, I
implemented an hrtimer that runs 5 times for every perf event
overflow event. If that stops counting on a cpu, then the cpu is
most likely in trouble.

To detect softlockups, tasks not yielding to the scheduler, I used the
previous kthread idea that now gets kicked every time the hrtimer fires.
If the kthread isn't being scheduled neither is anyone else and the
warning is printed to the console.

I tested this on x86_64 and both the softlockup and hardlockup paths
work.

V2:
- cleaned up the Kconfig and softlockup combination
- surrounded hardlockup cases with #ifdef CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS_NMI
- seperated out the softlockup case from perf event subsystem
- re-arranged the enabling/disabling nmi watchdog from proc space
- added cpumasks for hardlockup failure cases
- removed fallback to soft events if no PMU exists for hard events

V3:
- comment cleanups
- drop support for older softlockup code
- per_cpu cleanups
- completely remove software clock base hardlockup detector
- use per_cpu masking on hard/soft lockup detection
- #ifdef cleanups
- rename config option NMI_WATCHDOG to LOCKUP_DETECTOR
- documentation additions

V4:
- documentation fixes
- convert per_cpu to __get_cpu_var
- powerpc compile fixes

V5:
- split apart warn flags for hard and soft lockups

TODO:
- figure out how to make an arch-agnostic clock2cycles call
(if possible) to feed into perf events as a sample period

Instead of keeping SysRq support inside of legacy keyboard driver split
it out into a separate input handler (filter). This stops most SysRq input

70da2340fb 'sysctl_max_map_count' should be non-negative
Jan Engelhardt reported we have this problem:

setting max_map_count to a value large enough results in programs dying at

This is because we have a chance to make 'max_map_count' negative. but
it's meaningless. Make it only accept non-negative values.

06808b0827 hugetlb: derive huge pages nodes allowed from task mempolicy
This patch derives a "nodes_allowed" node mask from the numa mempolicy of
the task modifying the number of persistent huge pages to control the
allocation, freeing and adjusting of surplus huge pages when the pool page
count is modified via the new sysctl or sysfs attribute
"nr_hugepages_mempolicy". The nodes_allowed mask is derived as follows:

* For "default" [NULL] task mempolicy, a NULL nodemask_t pointer
is produced. This will cause the hugetlb subsystem to use
node_online_map as the "nodes_allowed". This preserves the
  behavior before this patch.
* For "preferred" mempolicy, including explicit local allocation,
a nodemask with the single preferred node will be produced.
"local" policy will NOT track any internode migrations of the
  task adjusting nr_hugepages.
* For "bind" and "interleave" policy, the mempolicy's nodemask
  will be used.
* Other than to inform the construction of the nodes_allowed node
mask, the actual mempolicy mode is ignored. That is, all modes
behave like interleave over the resulting nodes_allowed mask
  with no "fallback".

See the updated documentation [next patch] for more information
about the implications of this patch.

Examples:

Starting with:

	Node 0 HugePages_Total: 0
	Node 1 HugePages_Total: 0
	Node 2 HugePages_Total: 0
	Node 3 HugePages_Total: 0

Default behavior [with or without this patch] balances persistent
hugepage allocation across nodes [with sufficient contiguous memory]:

	sysctl vm.nr_hugepages[_mempolicy]=32

yields:

	Node 0 HugePages_Total: 8
	Node 1 HugePages_Total: 8
	Node 2 HugePages_Total: 8
	Node 3 HugePages_Total: 8

Of course, we only have nr_hugepages_mempolicy with the patch,
but with default mempolicy, nr_hugepages_mempolicy behaves the
same as nr_hugepages.

Applying mempolicy--e.g., with numactl [using '-m' a.k.a.
'--membind' because it allows multiple nodes to be specified
and it's easy to type]--we can allocate huge pages on
individual nodes or sets of nodes. So, starting from the
condition above, with 8 huge pages per node, add 8 more to
node 2 using:

	numactl -m 2 sysctl vm.nr_hugepages_mempolicy=40

This yields:

	Node 0 HugePages_Total: 8
	Node 1 HugePages_Total: 8
	Node 2 HugePages_Total: 16
	Node 3 HugePages_Total: 8

The incremental 8 huge pages were restricted to node 2 by the
specified mempolicy.

Similarly, we can use mempolicy to free persistent huge pages
from specified nodes:

	numactl -m 0,1 sysctl vm.nr_hugepages_mempolicy=32

yields:

	Node 0 HugePages_Total: 4
	Node 1 HugePages_Total: 4
	Node 2 HugePages_Total: 16
	Node 3 HugePages_Total: 8

The 8 huge pages freed were balanced over nodes 0 and 1.

This patch updates the internally used scheduler tuning values that are

Together with patch 2 of this series this allows to let user configured

a293980c2e exec: let do_coredump() limit the number of concurrent dumps to pipes
Introduce core pipe limiting sysctl.

Since we can dump cores to pipe, rather than directly to the filesystem,
we create a condition in which a user can create a very high load on the
system simply by running bad applications.

If the pipe reader specified in core_pattern is poorly written, we can
have lots of ourstandig resources and processes in the system.

This sysctl introduces an ability to limit that resource consumption.
core_pipe_limit defines how many in-flight dumps may be run in parallel,
dumps beyond this value are skipped and a note is made in the kernel log.
A special value of 0 in core_pipe_limit denotes unlimited core dumps may
be handled (this is the default value).

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

6a46079cf5 HWPOISON: The high level memory error handler in the VM v7
Add the high level memory handler that poisons pages
that got corrupted by hardware (typically by a two bit flip in a DIMM
or a cache) on the Linux level. The goal is to prevent everyone
from accessing these pages in the future.

This done at the VM level by marking a page hwpoisoned
and doing the appropriate action based on the type of page
it is.

The code that does this is portable and lives in mm/memory-failure.c

To quote the overview comment:

High level machine check handler. Handles pages reported by the
hardware as being corrupted usually due to a 2bit ECC memory or cache
failure.

This focuses on pages detected as corrupted in the background.
When the current CPU tries to consume corruption the currently
running process can just be killed directly instead. This implies
that if the error cannot be handled for some reason it's safe to
just ignore it because no corruption has been consumed yet. Instead
when that happens another machine check will happen.

Handles page cache pages in various states. The tricky part
here is that we can access any page asynchronous to other VM
users, because memory failures could happen anytime and anywhere,
possibly violating some of their assumptions. This is why this code
has to be extremely careful. Generally it tries to use normal locking
rules, as in get the standard locks, even if that means the
error handling takes potentially a long time.

Some of the operations here are somewhat inefficient and have non
linear algorithmic complexity, because the data structures have not
been optimized for this case. This is in particular the case
for the mapping from a vma to a process. Since this case is expected
to be rare we hope we can get away with this.

There are in principle two strategies to kill processes on poison:
- just unmap the data and wait for an actual reference before
killing
- kill as soon as corruption is detected.
Both have advantages and disadvantages and should be used
in different situations. Right now both are implemented and can
be switched with a new sysctl vm.memory_failure_early_kill
The default is early kill.

The patch does some rmap data structure walking on its own to collect
processes to kill. This is unusual because normally all rmap data structure
knowledge is in rmap.c only. I put it here for now to keep
everything together and rmap knowledge has been seeping out anyways

5e605b64a1 block: add blk-iopoll, a NAPI like approach for block devices
This borrows some code from NAPI and implements a polled completion
mode for block devices. The idea is the same as NAPI - instead of
doing the command completion when the irq occurs, schedule a dedicated
softirq in the hopes that we will complete more IO when the iopoll
handler is invoked. Devices have a budget of commands assigned, and will
stay in polled mode as long as they continue to consume their budget
from the iopoll softirq handler. If they do not, the device is set back
to interrupt completion mode.

This patch holds the core bits for blk-iopoll, device driver support
sold separately.

788084aba2 Security/SELinux: seperate lsm specific mmap_min_addr
Currently SELinux enforcement of controls on the ability to map low memory
is determined by the mmap_min_addr tunable. This patch causes SELinux to
ignore the tunable and instead use a seperate Kconfig option specific to how
much space the LSM should protect.

The tunable will now only control the need for CAP_SYS_RAWIO and SELinux
permissions will always protect the amount of low memory designated by
CONFIG_LSM_MMAP_MIN_ADDR.

This allows users who need to disable the mmap_min_addr controls (usual reason
being they run WINE as a non-root user) to do so and still have SELinux
controls preventing confined domains (like a web server) from being able to
map some area of low memory.

5211a242d0 x86: Add sysctl to allow panic on IOCK NMI error
This patch introduces a new sysctl:

    /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_io_nmi

which defaults to 0 (off).

When enabled, the kernel panics when the kernel receives an NMI
caused by an IO error.

The IO error triggered NMI indicates a serious system
condition, which could result in IO data corruption. Rather
than contiuing, panicing and dumping might be a better choice,
so one can figure out what's causing the IO error.

This could be especially important to companies running IO
intensive applications where corruption must be avoided, e.g. a
bank's databases.

dfec072ecd kmemcheck: add the kmemcheck core
General description: kmemcheck is a patch to the linux kernel that
detects use of uninitialized memory. It does this by trapping every
read and write to memory that was allocated dynamically (e.g. using
kmalloc()). If a memory address is read that has not previously been
written to, a message is printed to the kernel log.

Thanks to Andi Kleen for the set_memory_4k() solution.

Andrew Morton suggested documenting the shadow member of struct page.

cd17cbfda0 Revert "mm: add /proc controls for pdflush threads"
This reverts commit fafd688e4c.

Work is progressing to switch away from pdflush as the process backing
for flushing out dirty data. So it seems pointless to add more knobs
to control pdflush threads. The original author of the patch did not
have any specific use cases for adding the knobs, so we can easily
revert this before 2.6.30 to avoid having to maintain this API
forever.

5031296c57 x86: add extension fields for bootloader type and version
A long ago, in days of yore, it all began with a god named Thor.
There were vikings and boats and some plans for a Linux kernel
header. Unfortunately, a single 8-bit field was used for bootloader
type and version. This has generally worked without *too* much pain,
but we're getting close to flat running out of ID fields.

Add extension fields for both type and version. The type will be
extended if it the old field is 0xE; the version is a simple MSB
extension.

Keep /proc/sys/kernel/bootloader_type containing
(type << 4) + (ver & 0xf) for backwards compatiblity, but also add
/proc/sys/kernel/bootloader_version which contains the full version
number.

fafd688e4c mm: add /proc controls for pdflush threads
Add /proc entries to give the admin the ability to control the minimum and
maximum number of pdflush threads. This allows finer control of pdflush
on both large and small machines.

The rationale is simply one size does not fit all. Admins on large and/or
small systems may want to tune the min/max pdflush thread count to best
suit their needs. Right now the min/max is hardcoded to 2/8. While
probably a fair estimate for smaller machines, large machines with large
numbers of CPUs and large numbers of filesystems/block devices may benefit
from larger numbers of threads working on different block devices.

Even if the background flushing algorithm is radically changed, it is
still likely that multiple threads will be involved and admins would still
desire finer control on the min/max other than to have to recompile the
kernel.

The patch adds '/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_min' and
'/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_max' with r/w permissions.

The minimum value for nr_pdflush_threads_min is 1 and the maximum value is
the current value of nr_pdflush_threads_max. This minimum is required
since additional thread creation is performed in a pdflush thread itself.

The minimum value for nr_pdflush_threads_max is the current value of
nr_pdflush_threads_min and the maximum value can be 1000.

Documentation/sysctl/vm.txt is also updated.

Make the slow work pool configurable through /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work.

 (*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/min-threads

The minimum number of threads that should be in the pool as long as it is
in use. This may be anywhere between 2 and max-threads.

 (*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/max-threads

The maximum number of threads that should in the pool. This may be
     anywhere between min-threads and 255 or NR_CPUS * 2, whichever is greater.

 (*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/vslow-percentage

The percentage of active threads in the pool that may be used to execute
very slow work items. This may be between 1 and 99. The resultant number

3d43321b70 modules: sysctl to block module loading
Implement a sysctl file that disables module-loading system-wide since
there is no longer a viable way to remove CAP_SYS_MODULE after the system
bounding capability set was removed in 2.6.25.

Value can only be set to "1", and is tested only if standard capability
checks allow CAP_SYS_MODULE. Given existing /dev/mem protections, this
should allow administrators a one-way method to block module loading
after initial boot-time module loading has finished.

Addresses http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9838

On i386, HZ=1000, jiffies_to_clock_t() converts time in a somewhat strange
way from the user's point of view:

	# echo 500 >/proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
	# cat /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
	499

So, we have 5000 jiffies converted to only 499 clock ticks and reported
back.

TICK_NSEC = 999848
ACTHZ = 256039

Keeping in-kernel variable in units passed from userspace will fix issue
of course, but this probably won't be right for every sysctl.

dd8632a12e NOMMU: Make mmap allocation page trimming behaviour configurable.
NOMMU mmap allocates a piece of memory for an mmap that's rounded up in size to
the nearest power-of-2 number of pages. Currently it then discards the excess
pages back to the page allocator, making that memory available for use by other
things. This can, however, cause greater amount of fragmentation.

To counter this, a sysctl is added in order to fine-tune the trimming
behaviour. The default behaviour remains to trim pages aggressively, while
this can either be disabled completely or set to a higher page-granular
watermark in order to have finer-grained control.

2da02997e0 mm: add dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes sysctls
This change introduces two new sysctls to /proc/sys/vm:
dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes.

dirty_background_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_background_ratio and
dirty_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_ratio.

With growing memory capacities of individual machines, it's no longer
sufficient to specify dirty thresholds as a percentage of the amount of
dirtyable memory over the entire system.

dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes specify quantities of memory, in
bytes, that represent the dirty limits for the entire system. If either
of these values is set, its value represents the amount of dirty memory
that is needed to commence either background or direct writeback.

When a `bytes' or `ratio' file is written, its counterpart becomes a
function of the written value. For example, if dirty_bytes is written to
be 8096, 8K of memory is required to commence direct writeback.
dirty_ratio is then functionally equivalent to 8K / the amount of
dirtyable memory:

dirtyable_memory = free pages + mapped pages + file cache

	dirty_background_bytes = dirty_background_ratio * dirtyable_memory
		-or-
	dirty_background_ratio = dirty_background_bytes / dirtyable_memory

		AND

	dirty_bytes = dirty_ratio * dirtyable_memory
		-or-
	dirty_ratio = dirty_bytes / dirtyable_memory

Only one of dirty_background_bytes and dirty_background_ratio may be
specified at a time, and only one of dirty_bytes and dirty_ratio may be
specified. When one sysctl is written, the other appears as 0 when read.

The `bytes' files operate on a page size granularity since dirty limits
are compared with ZVC values, which are in page units.

Prior to this change, the minimum dirty_ratio was 5 as implemented by
get_dirty_limits() although /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio would show any user
written value between 0 and 100. This restriction is maintained, but
dirty_bytes has a lower limit of only one page.

Also prior to this change, the dirty_background_ratio could not equal or
exceed dirty_ratio. This restriction is maintained in addition to
restricting dirty_background_bytes. If either background threshold equals
or exceeds that of the dirty threshold, it is implicitly set to half the
dirty threshold.

f38f1d2aa5 trace: add a way to enable or disable the stack tracer
Impact: enhancement to stack tracer

The stack tracer currently is either on when configured in or
off when it is not. It can not be disabled when it is configured on.
(besides disabling the function tracer that it uses)

This patch adds a way to enable or disable the stack tracer at
run time. It defaults off on bootup, but a kernel parameter 'stacktrace'
has been added to enable it on bootup.

A new sysctl has been added "kernel.stack_tracer_enabled" to let
the user enable or disable the stack tracer at run time.

7ef9964e6d epoll: introduce resource usage limits
It has been thought that the per-user file descriptors limit would also
limit the resources that a normal user can request via the epoll
interface. Vegard Nossum reported a very simple program (a modified
version attached) that can make a normal user to request a pretty large
amount of kernel memory, well within the its maximum number of fds. To
solve such problem, default limits are now imposed, and /proc based
configuration has been introduced. A new directory has been created,
named /proc/sys/fs/epoll/ and inside there, there are two configuration
points:

max_user_instances = Maximum number of devices - per user

max_user_watches = Maximum number of "watched" fds - per user

The current default for "max_user_watches" limits the memory used by epoll
to store "watches", to 1/32 of the amount of the low RAM. As example, a
256MB 32bit machine, will have "max_user_watches" set to roughly 90000.
That should be enough to not break existing heavy epoll users. The
default value for "max_user_instances" is set to 128, that should be
enough too.

This also changes the userspace, because a new error code can now come out
from EPOLL_CTL_ADD (-ENOSPC). The EMFILE from epoll_create() was already
listed, so that should be ok.
