Convert the PM documents to ReST, in order to allow them to
build with Sphinx.
The conversion is actually:
- add blank lines and indentation in order to identify paragraphs;
- fix tables markups;
- add some lists markups;
- mark literal blocks;
- adjust title markups.
At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to
the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings.

Add kprobe_event= boot parameter to define kprobe events
at boot time.
The definition syntax is similar to tracefs/kprobe_events
interface, but use ',' and ';' instead of ' ' and '\n'
respectively. e.g.
kprobe_event=p,vfs_read,$arg1,$arg2
This puts a probe on vfs_read with argument1 and 2, and
enable the new event.

Support user-space dereference syntax for probe event arguments
to dereference the data-structure or array in user-space.
The syntax is just adding 'u' before an offset value.
+|-u<OFFSET>(<FETCHARG>)
e.g. +u8(%ax), +u0(+0(%si))
For example, if you probe do_sched_setscheduler(pid, policy,
param) and record param->sched_priority, you can add new
probe as below;
p do_sched_setscheduler priority=+u0($arg3)
Note that kprobe event provides this and it doesn't change the
dereference method automatically because we do not know whether
the given address is in userspace or kernel on some archs.
So as same as "ustring", this is an option for user, who has to
carefully choose the dereference method.

Add "ustring" type for fetching user-space string from kprobe event.
User can specify ustring type at uprobe event, and it is same as
"string" for uprobe.
Note that probe-event provides this option but it doesn't choose the
correct type automatically since we have not way to decide the address
is in user-space or not on some arch (and on some other arch, you can
fetch the string by "string" type). So user must carefully check the
target code (e.g. if you see __user on the target variable) and
use this new type.

Patch series "mm: Generalize putback functions"]
putback_inactive_pages() and move_active_pages_to_lru() are almost
similar, so this patchset merges them ina single function.
This patch (of 4):
The patch moves the calculation from putback_inactive_pages() to
shrink_inactive_list(). This makes putback_inactive_pages() looking more
similar to move_active_pages_to_lru().
To do that, we account activated pages in reclaim_stat::nr_activate.
Since a page may change its LRU type from anon to file cache inside
shrink_page_list() (see ClearPageSwapBacked()), we have to account pages
for the both types. So, nr_activate becomes an array.
Previously we used nr_activate to account PGACTIVATE events, but now we
account them into pgactivate variable (since they are about number of
pages in general, not about sum of hpage_nr_pages).

Add a 'trace(synthetic_event_name, params)' alternative to
synthetic_event_name(params).
Currently, the syntax used for generating synthetic events is to
invoke synthetic_event_name(params) i.e. use the synthetic event name
as a function call.
Users requested a new form that more explicitly shows that the
synthetic event is in effect being traced. In this version, a new
'trace()' keyword is used, and the synthetic event name is passed in
as the first argument.
In addition, for the sake of consistency with other actions, change
the documention to emphasize the trace() form over the function-call
form, which remains documented as equivalent.

Enabling of large number of functions by echoing in a large subset of the
functions in available_filter_functions can take a very long time. The
process requires testing all functions registered by the function tracer
(which is in the 10s of thousands), and doing a kallsyms lookup to convert
the ip address into a name, then comparing that name with the string passed
in.
When a function causes the function tracer to crash the system, a binary
bisect of the available_filter_functions can be done to find the culprit.
But this requires passing in half of the functions in
available_filter_functions over and over again, which makes it basically a
O(n^2) operation. With 40,000 functions, that ends up bing 1,600,000,000
opertions! And enabling this can take over 20 minutes.
As a quick speed up, if a number is passed into one of the filter files,
instead of doing a search, it just enables the function at the corresponding
line of the available_filter_functions file. That is:
# echo 50 > set_ftrace_filter
# cat set_ftrace_filter
x86_pmu_commit_txn
# head -50 available_filter_functions | tail -1
x86_pmu_commit_txn
This allows setting of half the available_filter_functions to take place in
less than a second!
# time seq 20000 > set_ftrace_filter
real 0m0.042s
user 0m0.005s
sys 0m0.015s
# wc -l set_ftrace_filter

Back in January I posted patches to create function based events. These were
the events that you suggested I make to allow developers to easily create
events in code where no trace event exists. After posting those changes for
review, it was suggested that we implement this instead with kprobes.
The problem with kprobes is that the interface is too complex and needs to
be simplified. Masami Hiramatsu posted patches in March and I've been
playing with them a bit. There's been a bit of clean up in the kprobe code
that was inspired by the function based event patches, and a couple of
enhancements to the kprobe event interface.
- If the arch supports it (we added support for x86), you can place a
kprobe event at the start of a function and use $arg1, $arg2, etc
to reference the arguments of a function. (Before you needed to know
what register or where on the stack the argument was).
- The second is a way to see array of events. For example, if you reference
a mac address, you can add:
echo 'p:mac ip_rcv perm_addr=+574($arg2):x8[6]' > kprobe_events
And this will produce:
mac: (ip_rcv+0x0/0x140) perm_addr={0x52,0x54,0x0,0xc0,0x76,0xec}
Other changes include
- Exporting trace_dump_stack to modules
- Have the stack tracer trace the entire stack (stop trying to remove
tracing itself, as we keep removing too much).
- Added support for SDT in uprobes

this instead with kprobes.

Add $argN special fetch variable for accessing function
arguments. This allows user to trace the Nth argument easily
at the function entry.
Note that this returns most probably assignment of registers
and stacks. In some case, it may not work well. If you need
to access correct registers or stacks you should use perf-probe.

Add array type support for probe events.
This allows user to get arraied types from memory address.
The array type syntax is
TYPE[N]
Where TYPE is one of types (u8/16/32/64,s8/16/32/64,
x8/16/32/64, symbol, string) and N is a fixed value less
than 64.
The string array type is a bit different from other types. For
other base types, <base-type>[1] is equal to <base-type>
(e.g. +0(%di):x32[1] is same as +0(%di):x32.) But string[1] is not
equal to string. The string type itself represents "char array",
but string array type represents "char * array". So, for example,
+0(%di):string[1] is equal to +0(+0(%di)):string.

As suggested by Kees, using %pS should be sufficient and %px isn't

the pcsr value doesn't fall into kernel space range (e.g. if the CPU is
stuck in firmware), %pS also gives out pcsr hexadecimal value.
So this commit removes useless %px and update section "Output format"
in the document for alignment between the code and document.

As stated in the pull request for the unification of CLOCK_MONOTONIC and
CLOCK_BOOTTIME, it was clear that we might have to revert the change.
As reported by several folks systemd and other applications rely on the
documented behaviour of CLOCK_MONOTONIC on Linux and break with the above
changes. After resume daemons time out and other timeout related issues are
observed. Rafael compiled this list:
* systemd kills daemons on resume, after >WatchdogSec seconds
of suspending (Genki Sky). [Verified that that's because systemd uses
CLOCK_MONOTONIC and expects it to not include the suspend time.]
* systemd-journald misbehaves after resume:
systemd-journald[7266]: File /var/log/journal/016627c3c4784cd4812d4b7e96a34226/system.journal
corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing.
(Mike Galbraith).
* NetworkManager reports "networking disabled" and networking is broken
after resume 50% of the time (Pavel). [May be because of systemd.]
* MATE desktop dims the display and starts the screensaver right after
system resume (Pavel).
* Full system hang during resume (me). [May be due to systemd or NM or both.]
That happens on debian and open suse systems.
It's sad, that these problems were neither catched in -next nor by those
folks who expressed interest in this change.

Kswapd will not wakeup if per-zone watermarks are not failing or if too
many previous attempts at background reclaim have failed.
This can be true if there is a lot of free memory available. For high-
order allocations, kswapd is responsible for waking up kcompactd for
background compaction. If the zone is not below its watermarks or
reclaim has recently failed (lots of free memory, nothing left to
reclaim), kcompactd does not get woken up.
When __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is not allowed, allow kcompactd to still be
woken up even if kswapd will not reclaim. This allows high-order
allocations, such as thp, to still trigger background compaction even
when the zone has an abundance of free memory.

"A small set of updates for timers and timekeeping:
- The most interesting change is the consolidation of clock MONOTONIC
and clock BOOTTIME.
Clock MONOTONIC behaves now exactly like clock BOOTTIME and does
not longer ignore the time spent in suspend. A new clock
MONOTONIC_ACTIVE is provived which behaves like clock MONOTONIC in
kernels before this change. This allows applications to
programmatically check for the clock MONOTONIC behaviour.
As discussed in the review thread, this has the potential of
breaking user space and we might have to revert this. Knock on wood
that we can avoid that exercise.

With the addition of variables and actions, it's become necessary to
provide more detailed error information to users about syntax errors.
Add a 'last error' facility accessible via the erroring event's 'hist'
file. Reading the hist file after an error will display more detailed
information about what went wrong, if information is available. This
extended error information will be available until the next hist
trigger command for that event.
# echo xxx > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/sched/sched_wakeup/trigger

Appending .usecs onto a common_timestamp field will cause the
timestamp value to be in microseconds instead of the default
nanoseconds. A typical latency histogram using usecs would look like
this:
# echo 'hist:keys=pid,prio:ts0=common_timestamp.usecs ...
# echo 'hist:keys=next_pid:wakeup_lat=common_timestamp.usecs-$ts0 ...
This also adds an external trace_clock_in_ns() to trace.c for the
timestamp conversion.

Add a new option flag indicating whether or not the ring buffer is in
'absolute timestamp' mode.
Currently this is only set/unset by hist triggers that make use of a
common_timestamp. As such, there's no reason to make this writeable
for users - its purpose is only to allow users to determine
unequivocally whether or not the ring buffer is in that mode (although
absolute timestamps can coexist with the normal delta timestamps, when
the ring buffer is in absolute mode, timestamps written while absolute
mode is in effect take up more space in the buffer, and are not as
efficient).

With the coming removal of jprobes, using ftrace callbacks is one of the
utilities that replace the jprobes functionality. Having a document that
explains how to use ftrace as such will help in the transition from jprobes
to ftrace. This document is for kernel developers that require attaching a
callback to a function within the kernel.

In the coresight CPU debug document it suggests to use 'echo' command
to set latency request to /dev/cpu_dma_latency so can disable all CPU
idle states, but in fact this doesn't work.
This is because when the command 'echo' exits, it releases the device
node's file descriptor and the kernel release function removes the QoS
constraint; finally when the command 'echo' finished there have no
constraint imposed on cpu_dma_latency.
This patch changes to use 'exec' to access '/dev/cpu_dma_latency', the
command 'exec' can avoid the file descriptor to be closed so we can
keep the constraint on cpu_dma_latency.
This patch also adds the info for reference docs for PM QoS and cpuidle
sysfs.

o Pretty much a full rewrite of the processing of function plugins.
i.e. echo do_IRQ:stacktrace > set_ftrace_filter
o The rewrite was needed to add plugins to be unique to tracing instances.
i.e. mkdir instance/foo; cd instances/foo; echo do_IRQ:stacktrace > set_ftrace_filter
The old way was written very hacky. This removes a lot of those hacks.
o New "function-fork" tracing option. When set, pids in the set_ftrace_pid

listed in the set_ftrace_pid file forks.
o Exposure of "maxactive" for kretprobe in kprobe_events
o Allow for builtin init functions to be traced by the function tracer
(via the kernel command line). Module init function tracing will come

When a kretprobe is installed on a kernel function, there is a maximum
limit of how many calls in parallel it can catch (aka "maxactive"). A
kernel module could call register_kretprobe() and initialize maxactive
(see example in samples/kprobes/kretprobe_example.c).
But that is not exposed to userspace and it is currently not possible to
choose maxactive when writing to /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
The default maxactive can be as low as 1 on single-core with a
non-preemptive kernel. This is too low and we need to increase it not
only for recursive functions, but for functions that sleep or resched.
This patch updates the format of the command that can be written to
kprobe_events so that maxactive can be optionally specified.
I need this for a bpf program attached to the kretprobe of
inet_csk_accept, which can sleep for a long time.
This patch includes a basic selftest:
> # ./ftracetest -v test.d/kprobe/

It's another busy cycle for the docs tree, as the sphinx conversion
continues. Highlights include:
- Further work on PDF output, which remains a bit of a pain but
should be more solid now.
- Five more DocBook template files converted to Sphinx. Only 27 to
go... Lots of plain-text files have also been converted and
integrated.
- Images in binary formats have been replaced with more
source-friendly versions.
- Various bits of organizational work, including the renaming of
various files discussed at the kernel summit.
- New documentation for the device_link mechanism.
... and, of course, lots of typo fixes and small updates"

A new file is created:
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace_marker_raw
This allows for appications to create data structures and write the binary
data directly into it, and then read the trace data out from trace_pipe_raw
into the same type of data structure. This saves on converting numbers into
ASCII that would be required by trace_marker.

Use glob_match() to support flexible glob wildcards (*,?)

Since the full glob matching is slower than the current
partial matching routines(*pat, pat*, *pat*), this leaves
those routines and just add MATCH_GLOB for complex glob

Storing this value will help prevent unwinders from getting out of sync
with the function graph tracer ret_stack. Now instead of needing a
stateful iterator, they can compare the return address pointer to find
the right ret_stack entry.
Note that an array of 50 ftrace_ret_stack structs is allocated for every
task. So when an arch implements this, it will add either 200 or 400
bytes of memory usage per task (depending on whether it's a 32-bit or

ftrace is very quick to give up on saving the task command line (see
`trace_save_cmdline()`). The workaround for events which really care
about the command line is to explicitly assign it as part of the entry.
However, this doesn't work for kprobe events, as there's no
straightforward way to get access to current->comm. Add a kprobe/uprobe
event variable $comm which provides exactly that.

The CPU load update related functions have a weak naming convention
currently, starting with update_cpu_load_*() which isn't ideal as
"update" is a very generic concept.
Since two of these functions are public already (and a third is to come)
that's enough to introduce a more conventional naming scheme. So let's
do the following rename instead:

Allow users to define 'named' hist triggers. All triggers created
with the same 'name=xxx' option will update the same shared histogram
data.
This expands the hist trigger syntax from this:
# echo hist:keys=xxx ... [ if filter] > event/trigger
to this:
# echo hist:name=xxx:keys=xxx ... [ if filter] > event/trigger
Named histograms must use a 'compatible' set of keys and values, which
means each event added to a set of named triggers must have the same
names and types.
Reading the 'hist' file of any of the participating events will
produce the same output as any other participating event, which is to
be expected since they share the same data.

For debugging low level code interacting with the CPU it is often
useful to trace the MSR read/writes. This gives a concise summary of
PMU and other operations.
perf has an ad-hoc way to do this using trace_printk, but it's
somewhat limited (and also now spews ugly boot messages when enabled)
Instead define real trace points for all MSR accesses.
This adds three new trace points: read_msr and write_msr and rdpmc.
They also report if the access faulted (if *_safe is used)
This allows filtering and triggering on specific MSR values, which
allows various more advanced debugging techniques.
All the values are well defined in the CPU documentation.
The trace can be post processed with
Documentation/trace/postprocess/decode_msr.py to add symbolic MSR
names to the trace.
I only added it to native MSR accesses in C, not paravirtualized or in
entry*.S (which is not too interesting)
Originally the patch kit moved the MSRs out of line. This uses an
alternative approach recommended by Steven Rostedt of only moving the
trace calls out of line, but open coding the access to the jump label.

o Tracer specific options are now visible even when the tracer is not
active. It was rather annoying that you can only see and modify tracer
options after enabling the tracer. Now they are in the options/ directory
even when the tracer is not active. Although they are still only visible
when the tracer is active in the trace_options file.
o Trace options are now per instance (although some of the tracer specific
options are global)
o New tracefs file: set_event_pid. If any pid is added to this file, then
all events in the instance will filter out events that are not part of
this pid. sched_switch and sched_wakeup events handle next and the wakee
pids.

Intel(R) Trace Hub (TH) is a set of hardware blocks (subdevices) that
produce, switch and output trace data from multiple hardware and
software sources over several types of trace output ports encoded
in System Trace Protocol (MIPI STPv2) and is intended to perform
full system debugging.
For these subdevices, we create a bus, where they can be discovered
and configured by userspace software.
This patch creates this bus infrastructure, three types of devices
(source, output, switch), resource allocation, some callback mechanisms
to facilitate communication between the subdevices' drivers and some
common sysfs attributes.

A System Trace Module (STM) is a device exporting data in System Trace
Protocol (STP) format as defined by MIPI STP standards. Examples of such
devices are Intel(R) Trace Hub and Coresight STM.
This abstraction provides a unified interface for software trace sources
to send their data over an STM device to a debug host. In order to do
that, such a trace source needs to be assigned a pair of master/channel
identifiers that all the data from this source will be tagged with. The
STP decoder on the debug host side will use these master/channel tags to
distinguish different trace streams from one another inside one STP
stream.
This abstraction provides a configfs-based policy management mechanism
for dynamic allocation of these master/channel pairs based on trace
source-supplied string identifier. It has the flexibility of being
defined at runtime and at the same time (provided that the policy
definition is aligned with the decoding end) consistency.
For userspace trace sources, this abstraction provides write()-based and
mmap()-based (if the underlying stm device allows this) output mechanism.
For kernel-side trace sources, we provide "stm_source" device class that
can be connected to an stm device at run time.

The changes with more meat are:
o Allowing the trace event filters to filter on CPU number and process ids
o Two new markers for trace output latency were added
(10 and 100 msec latencies)
o Have tracing_thresh filter function profiling time
I also worked on modifying the ring buffer code for some future
work, and moved the adding of the timestamp around. One of my changes
caused a regression, and since other changes were built on top of it
and already tested, I had to operate a revert of that change. Instead
of rebasing, this change set has the code that caused a regression
as well as the code to revert that change without touching the other
changes that were made on top of it.

A fine granulity support for delay would be very useful when profiling
VM logics, such as page allocation including page reclaim and memory
compaction with function graph.
Thus, this patch adds two additional marks with two changes.
- An equal sign in mark selection function is removed to align code
behavior with comments and documentation.
- The function graph example related to delay in ftrace.txt is updated
to cover all supported marks.

Currently, function graph tracer prints "!" or "+" just before
function execution time to signal a function overhead, depending
on the time. And some tracers tracing latency also print "!" or
"+" just after time to signal overhead, depending on the interval
between events. Even it is usually enough to do that, we sometimes
need to signal for bigger execution time than 100 micro seconds.
For example, I used function graph tracer to detect if there is
any case that exit_mm() takes too much time. I did following steps
in /sys/kernel/debug/tracing. It was easier to detect very large
excution time with patched kernel than with original kernel.
$ echo exit_mm > set_graph_function
$ echo function_graph > current_tracer
$ echo > trace
$ cat trace_pipe > $LOGFILE
... (do something and terminate logging)
$ grep "\\$" $LOGFILE

3) $ 22207659 us | } /* mmput */
3) $ 22207793 us | } /* exit_mm */
And then, it was easy to find out that a schedule-out occured by
sub_preempt_count() within kernel_map_pages().
To detect very large function exection time caused by either problematic
function implementation or scheduling issues, this patch can be useful.

Introduce FTRACE_OPS_FL_IPMODIFY to avoid conflict among
ftrace users who may modify regs->ip to change the execution
path. If two or more users modify the regs->ip on the same
function entry, one of them will be broken. So they must add
IPMODIFY flag and make sure that ftrace_set_filter_ip() succeeds.
Note that ftrace doesn't allow ftrace_ops which has IPMODIFY
flag to have notrace hash, and the ftrace_ops must have a
filter hash (so that the ftrace_ops can hook only specific
entries), because it strongly depends on the address and
must be allowed for only few selected functions.

Until now, the reporting from trace-vmscan-postprocess.pl is not very
useful because we cannot directly use this script for checking the

to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. It's introducing a
way to allow different functions to call directly different trampolines
instead of all calling the same "mcount" one.
The only user of this for now is the function graph tracer, which always
had a different trampoline, but the function tracer trampoline was called
and did basically nothing, and then the function graph tracer trampoline
was called. The difference now, is that the function graph tracer
trampoline can be called directly if a function is only being traced by
the function graph trampoline. If function tracing is also happening on
the same function, the old way is still done.
The accounting for this takes up more memory when function graph tracing
is activated, as it needs to keep track of which functions it uses.
I have a new way that wont take as much memory, but it's not ready yet
for this merge window, and will have to wait for the next one.
Another big change was the removal of the ftrace_start/stop() calls that
were used by the suspend/resume code that stopped function tracing when
entering into suspend and resume paths. The stop of ftrace was done
because there was some function that would crash the system if one called
smp_processor_id()! The stop/start was a big hammer to solve the issue
at the time, which was when ftrace was first introduced into Linux.
Now ftrace has better infrastructure to debug such issues, and I found
the problem function and labeled it with "notrace" and function tracing
can now safely be activated all the way down into the guts of suspend
and resume.
Other changes include clean ups of uprobe code.
Clean up of the trace_seq() code.
And other various small fixes and clean ups to ftrace and tracing.

We always use resched_task() with rq->curr argument.
It's not possible to reschedule any task but rq's current.
The patch introduces resched_curr(struct rq *) to
replace all of the repeating patterns. The main aim
is cleanup, but there is a little size profit too:

There are some code paths in the kernel that need to do some preparations
before it calls a tracepoint. As that code is worthless overhead when
the tracepoint is not enabled, it would be prudent to have that code
only run when the tracepoint is active. To accomplish this, all tracepoints
now get a static inline function called "trace_<tracepoint-name>_enabled()"
which returns true when the tracepoint is enabled and false otherwise.
As an added bonus, that function uses the static_key of the tracepoint
such that no branch is needed.
if (trace_mytracepoint_enabled()) {
arg = process_tp_arg();
trace_mytracepoint(arg);
}
Will keep the "process_tp_arg()" (which may be expensive to run) from
being executed when the tracepoint isn't enabled.
It's best to encapsulate the tracepoint itself in the if statement
just to keep races. For example, if you had:
if (trace_mytracepoint_enabled())
arg = process_tp_arg();
trace_mytracepoint(arg);
There's a chance that the tracepoint could be enabled just after the
if statement, and arg will be undefined when calling the tracepoint.

But there were a few features that were added.
Uprobes now work with event triggers and multi buffers.
Uprobes have support under ftrace and perf.
The big feature is that the function tracer can now be used within the
multi buffer instances. That is, you can now trace some functions
in one buffer, others in another buffer, all functions in a third buffer
and so on. They are basically agnostic from each other. This only
works for the function tracer and not for the function graph trace,
although you can have the function graph tracer running in the top level
buffer (or any tracer for that matter) and have different function tracing
going on in the sub buffers.

No architecture uses the "data" parameter in ftrace_dyn_arch_init() in any
way, it just sets the value to 0. And this is used as a return value
in the caller -- ftrace_init, which just checks the retval against
zero.
Note there is also "return 0" in every ftrace_dyn_arch_init. So it is
enough to check the retval and remove all the indirect sets of data on
all archs.

were added to 3.10, which includes several bug fixes that have been
marked for stable.
As for new features, there were a few, but nothing to write to LWN about.
These include:
New function trigger called "dump" and "cpudump" that will cause
ftrace to dump its buffer to the console when the function is called.
The difference between "dump" and "cpudump" is that "dump" will dump
the entire contents of the ftrace buffer, where as "cpudump" will only
dump the contents of the ftrace buffer for the CPU that called the function.
Another small enhancement is a new sysctl switch called "traceoff_on_warning"
which, when enabled, will disable tracing if any WARN_ON() is triggered.
This is useful if you want to debug what caused a warning and do not
want to risk losing your trace data by the ring buffer overwriting the
data before you can disable it. There's also a kernel command line
option that will make this enabled at boot up called the same thing.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.11-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time the total number of ACPI commits is slightly greater than
the number of cpufreq commits, but Viresh Kumar (who works on cpufreq)
remains the most active patch submitter.
To me, the most significant change is the addition of offline/online
device operations to the driver core (with the Greg's blessing) and
the related modifications of the ACPI core hotplug code. Next are the
freezer updates from Colin Cross that should make the freezing of
tasks a bit less heavy weight.
We also have a couple of regression fixes, a number of fixes for
issues that have not been identified as regressions, two new drivers
and a bunch of cleanups all over.
Highlights:
- Hotplug changes to support graceful hot-removal failures.
It sometimes is necessary to fail device hot-removal operations
gracefully if they cannot be carried out completely. For example,
if memory from a memory module being hot-removed has been allocated
for the kernel's own use and cannot be moved elsewhere, it's
desirable to fail the hot-removal operation in a graceful way
rather than to crash the kernel, but currenty a success or a kernel
crash are the only possible outcomes of an attempted memory
hot-removal. Needless to say, that is not a very attractive
alternative and it had to be addressed.
However, in order to make it work for memory, I first had to make
it work for CPUs and for this purpose I needed to modify the ACPI
processor driver. It's been split into two parts, a resident one
handling the low-level initialization/cleanup and a modular one
playing the actual driver's role (but it binds to the CPU system
device objects rather than to the ACPI device objects representing
processors). That's been sort of like a live brain surgery on a
patient who's riding a bike.
So this is a little scary, but since we found and fixed a couple of
regressions it caused to happen during the early linux-next testing
(a month ago), nobody has complained.
As a bonus we remove some duplicated ACPI hotplug code, because the
ACPI-based CPU hotplug is now going to use the common ACPI hotplug
code.
- Lighter weight freezing of tasks.
These changes from Colin Cross and Mandeep Singh Baines are
targeted at making the freezing of tasks a bit less heavy weight
operation. They reduce the number of tasks woken up every time
during the freezing, by using the observation that the freezer
simply doesn't need to wake up some of them and wait for them all
to call refrigerator(). The time needed for the freezer to decide
to report a failure is reduced too.
Also reintroduced is the check causing a lockdep warining to
trigger when try_to_freeze() is called with locks held (which is
generally unsafe and shouldn't happen).
- cpufreq updates
First off, a commit from Srivatsa S Bhat fixes a resume regression
introduced during the 3.10 cycle causing some cpufreq sysfs
attributes to return wrong values to user space after resume. The
fix is kind of fresh, but also it's pretty obvious once Srivatsa
has identified the root cause.
Second, we have a new freqdomain_cpus sysfs attribute for the
acpi-cpufreq driver to provide information previously available via
related_cpus. From Lan Tianyu.
Finally, we fix a number of issues, mostly related to the
CPUFREQ_POSTCHANGE notifier and cpufreq Kconfig options and clean
up some code. The majority of changes from Viresh Kumar with bits
from Jacob Shin, Heiko Stübner, Xiaoguang Chen, Ezequiel Garcia,
Arnd Bergmann, and Tang Yuantian.
- ACPICA update
A usual bunch of updates from the ACPICA upstream.
During the 3.4 cycle we introduced support for ACPI 5 extended
sleep registers, but they are only supposed to be used if the
HW-reduced mode bit is set in the FADT flags and the code attempted
to use them without checking that bit. That caused suspend/resume
regressions to happen on some systems. Fix from Lv Zheng causes
those registers to be used only if the HW-reduced mode bit is set.
Apart from this some other ACPICA bugs are fixed and code cleanups
are made by Bob Moore, Tomasz Nowicki, Lv Zheng, Chao Guan, and
Zhang Rui.
- cpuidle updates
New driver for Xilinx Zynq processors is added by Michal Simek.
Multidriver support simplification, addition of some missing
kerneldoc comments and Kconfig-related fixes come from Daniel
Lezcano.
- ACPI power management updates
Changes to make suspend/resume work correctly in Xen guests from
Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk, sparse warning fix from Fengguang Wu and
cleanups and fixes of the ACPI device power state selection
routine.
- ACPI documentation updates
Some previously missing pieces of ACPI documentation are added by
Lv Zheng and Aaron Lu (hopefully, that will help people to
uderstand how the ACPI subsystem works) and one outdated doc is
updated by Hanjun Guo.
- Assorted ACPI updates
We finally nailed down the IA-64 issue that was the reason for
reverting commit 9f29ab11dd ("ACPI / scan: do not match drivers
against objects having scan handlers"), so we can fix it and move
the ACPI scan handler check added to the ACPI video driver back to
the core.
A mechanism for adding CMOS RTC address space handlers is
introduced by Lan Tianyu to allow some EC-related breakage to be
fixed on some systems.
A spec-compliant implementation of acpi_os_get_timer() is added by
Mika Westerberg.
The evaluation of _STA is added to do_acpi_find_child() to avoid
situations in which a pointer to a disabled device object is
returned instead of an enabled one with the same _ADR value. From
Jeff Wu.
Intel BayTrail PCH (Platform Controller Hub) support is added to
the ACPI driver for Intel Low-Power Subsystems (LPSS) and that
driver is modified to work around a couple of known BIOS issues.
Changes from Mika Westerberg and Heikki Krogerus.
The EC driver is fixed by Vasiliy Kulikov to use get_user() and
put_user() instead of dereferencing user space pointers blindly.
Code cleanups are made by Bjorn Helgaas, Nicholas Mazzuca and Toshi
Kani.
- Assorted power management updates
The "runtime idle" helper routine is changed to take the return
values of the callbacks executed by it into account and to call
rpm_suspend() if they return 0, which allows us to reduce the
overall code bloat a bit (by dropping some code that's not
necessary any more after that modification).
The runtime PM documentation is updated by Alan Stern (to reflect
the "runtime idle" behavior change).
New trace points for PM QoS are added by Sahara
(<keun-o.park@windriver.com>).
PM QoS documentation is updated by Lan Tianyu.
Code cleanups are made and minor issues are addressed by Bernie
Thompson, Bjorn Helgaas, Julius Werner, and Shuah Khan.
- devfreq updates

This patch has been invaluable in my adventures finding
issues in the perf NMI handler. I'm as big a fan of
printk() as anybody is, but using printk() in NMIs is
deadly when they're happening frequently.
Even hacking in trace_printk() ended up eating enough
CPU to throw off some of the measurements I was making.

b0f1a59a "tracing/filters: Use a different op for glob match" added
glob matching to tracepoint filter strings. It uses the ftrace function
tracing glob matching facility that allows for the wild card character (*)
to be used at the start and/or end of the matching string.
But the documentation still states that the filtering only allows for
exact string matches.

There are some cases when filtering on a set flag of a field of a tracepoint
is useful. But currently the only filtering commands for numbered fields
is ==, !=, <, <=, >, >=. This does not help when you just want to trace if
a specific flag is set. For example:
> # sudo trace-cmd record -e brcmfmac:brcmf_dbg -f 'level & 0x40000'
> disable all
> enable brcmfmac:brcmf_dbg
> path = /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/brcmfmac/brcmf_dbg/enable
> (level & 0x40000)
> ^
> parse_error: Invalid operator
>
When trying to trace brcmf_dbg when level has its 1 << 18 bit set, the
filter fails to perform.
By allowing a binary '&' operation, this gives the user the ability to
test a bit.
Note, a binary '|' is not added, as it doesn't make sense as fields must
be compared to constants (for now), and ORing a constant will always return
true.

Add the "cpudump" command to have the current CPU ftrace buffer dumped
to console if a function is hit. This is useful when debugging a
tripple fault, where you have an idea of a function that is called
just before the tripple fault occurs, and can tell ftrace to dump its
content out to the console before it continues.
This differs from the "dump" command as it only dumps the content of
the ring buffer for the currently executing CPU, and does not show
the contents of the other CPUs.
Format is:
<function>:cpudump
echo 'bad_address:cpudump' > /debug/tracing/set_ftrace_filter

Along with the usual minor fixes and clean ups there are a few major
changes with this pull request.
1) Multiple buffers for the ftrace facility
This feature has been requested by many people over the last few years.
I even heard that Google was about to implement it themselves. I finally
had time and cleaned up the code such that you can now create multiple
instances of the ftrace buffer and have different events go to different
buffers. This way, a low frequency event will not be lost in the noise
of a high frequency event.
Note, currently only events can go to different buffers, the tracers
(ie. function, function_graph and the latency tracers) still can only
be written to the main buffer.
2) The function tracer triggers have now been extended.
The function tracer had two triggers. One to enable tracing when a
function is hit, and one to disable tracing. Now you can record a
stack trace on a single (or many) function(s), take a snapshot of the
buffer (copy it to the snapshot buffer), and you can enable or disable
an event to be traced when a function is hit.
3) A perf clock has been added.
A "perf" clock can be chosen to be used when tracing. This will cause
ftrace to use the same clock as perf uses, and hopefully this will make
it easier to interleave the perf and ftrace data for analysis.

Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt:
"Along with the usual minor fixes and clean ups there are a few major
changes with this pull request.
1) Multiple buffers for the ftrace facility
This feature has been requested by many people over the last few
years. I even heard that Google was about to implement it themselves.
I finally had time and cleaned up the code such that you can now
create multiple instances of the ftrace buffer and have different
events go to different buffers. This way, a low frequency event will
not be lost in the noise of a high frequency event.
Note, currently only events can go to different buffers, the tracers
(ie function, function_graph and the latency tracers) still can only
be written to the main buffer.
This will cause
ftrace to use the same clock as perf uses, and hopefully this will
make it easier to interleave the perf and ftrace data for analysis."
