Memory hotplug code of i386 adds memory to only highmem. So, if
CONFIG_HIGHMEM is not set, CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG shouldn't be set.
Otherwise, it causes compile error.
In addition, many architecture can't use memory hotplug feature yet. So, I

Move the i386 VDSO down into a vma and thus randomize it.
Besides the security implications, this feature also helps debuggers, which
can COW a vma-backed VDSO just like a normal DSO and can thus do
single-stepping and other debugging features.
It's good for hypervisors (Xen, VMWare) too, which typically live in the same
high-mapped address space as the VDSO, hence whenever the VDSO is used, they
get lots of guest pagefaults and have to fix such guest accesses up - which
slows things down instead of speeding things up (the primary purpose of the
VDSO).
There's a new CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO (default=y) option, which provides support
for older glibcs that still rely on a prelinked high-mapped VDSO. Newer
distributions (using glibc 2.3.3 or later) can turn this option off. Turning
it off is also recommended for security reasons: attackers cannot use the
predictable high-mapped VDSO page as syscall trampoline anymore.
There is a new vdso=[0|1] boot option as well, and a runtime
/proc/sys/vm/vdso_enabled sysctl switch, that allows the VDSO to be turned
on/off.
(This version of the VDSO-randomization patch also has working ELF
coredumping, the previous patch crashed in the coredumping code.)
This code is a combined work of the exec-shield VDSO randomization
code and Gerd Hoffmann's hypervisor-centric VDSO patch. Rusty Russell
started this patch and i completed it.

Commit 1e9f28fa1e ("[PATCH] sched: new
sched domain for representing multi-core") incorrectly made SCHED_SMT
and some of the structures it uses dependent on SMP.
However, this is wrong, the structures are only defined if X86_HT, so
SCHED_SMT has to depend on that as well.
The patch broke voyager, since it doesn't provide any of the multi-core
or hyperthreading structures.

Running abnormal VM splits causes weird problems - people can set non-standard

CPU_HOTPLUG has race conditions when we use broadcast mode IPI.
- First we introduced no_broadcast option
(see include/asm-i386/mach-default/mach_ipi.h)
- x86_64 solved it by using physical flat mode (same as bigsmp on i386)
since this will not use broadcast shortcuts for IPI.
- We switched to use bigsmp on i386 so that we can have same handling as
x86_64, but apparently this caused an error message, if kernel was
compiled without X86_GENERICARCH, X86_BIGSMP. The message "You have >8
CPUS..." which was bogus and misleading, and only indicated one of the
above ARCH wasnt selected.
So we do not switch to automatic bigsmp for HOTPLUG_CPU support in i386
until the other related config dependencies for SMP_SUSPEND etc can be done
right.

Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for
each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5
NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy.
SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has
been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the
future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's
number.
This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi
nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary.
On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2
config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I
changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It
would be simpler.

Add a new sched domain for representing multi-core with shared caches
between cores. Consider a dual package system, each package containing two
cores and with last level cache shared between cores with in a package. If
there are two runnable processes, with this appended patch those two
processes will be scheduled on different packages.
On such systems, with this patch we have observed 8% perf improvement with
specJBB(2 warehouse) benchmark and 35% improvement with CFP2000 rate(with 2
users).
This new domain will come into play only on multi-core systems with shared
caches. On other systems, this sched domain will be removed by domain
degeneration code. This new domain can be also used for implementing power
savings policy (see OLS 2005 CMP kernel scheduler paper for more details..

Make CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU depend on !X86_PC, so we need to turn on either
CONFIG_GENERICARCH, CONFIG_BIGSMP or any other subarch except X86_PC when
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y
With 2.6.15+ kernels when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is turned on we switch to
bigsmp mode for sending IPI's and ioapic configurations that caused the
following error message.
>> More than 8 CPUs detected and CONFIG_X86_PC cannot handle it.
>> Use CONFIG_X86_GENERICARCH or CONFIG_X86_BIGSMP.
Originally bigsmp was added just to handle >8 cpus, but now with hotplug
cpu support we need to use bigsmp mode (why? see below), that cause the
above error message even if there were less than 8 cpus in the system.
The message is bogus, but we are cannot use logical flat mode due to issues
with broadcast IPI can confuse a CPU just comming up. We use flat physical
mode just like x86_64 case. More details on why bigsmp now uses flat
physical mode (vs. cluster mode) in following link.

Enable selection of different user/kernel VM splits for i386, including an
optimized mode for 1GB physical RAM, which gives the kernel a direct (non
HIGHMEM) mapping to the entire 1GB rather than just the first 896MB.
There is a similarly a similarly optimized mode for machines with exactly 2GB
of physical RAM.
This can speed up the kernel by avoiding having to create/destroy temporary
HIGHMEM mappings, and by not having to include HIGHMEM support at all on such
machines. The flip side is that there's less virtual addressing left for
userspace in these alternatives, and some binary-only kernel modules may
misbehave unless rebuilt with the same VMSPLIT option as the main kernel
image.

I have heard some complaints about people not finding CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP
option and also some objections about its dependency on CONFIG_EMBEDDED.
The following patch ends that dependency. I thought of hiding it under
CONFIG_KEXEC, but CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START could also be used for some reasons
other than kexec/kdump and hence left it visible. I will also update the
documentation accordingly.
o Following patch removes the config dependency of CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START
on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. The reason being CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP option for
kdump needs CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START which makes CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP depend
on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. It is not always obvious for kdump users to choose
CONFIG_EMBEDDED.
o It also shifts the palce where this option appears, to make it closer
to kexec and kdump options.

Make UML share the underlying cpu-specific tuning done on i386.
Actually, for now many config options aren't used a lot - but that can be done
later. Also, UML relies on GCC optimization for things like memcpy and such
more than i386, so specifying the correct -march and -mtune should be enough.
Later, we may want to correct some other stuff.
For instance, since FPU context switching, for us, is done (at least
partially, i.e. between our kernelspace and userspace) by the host, we may
allow usage of FPU operations by GCC. This doesn't hold for kernelspace vs.
kernelspace, but we don't support preemption.

Several implementations were essentialy a common piece of C code using
the cmpxchg() macro. Put the implementation in one spot that everyone
can share, and convert sparc64 over to using this.
Alpha is the lone arch-specific implementation, which codes up a
special fast path for the common case in order to avoid GP reloading
which a pure C version would require.

Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for
BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making
BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC
to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when
BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h
are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work).
If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might
have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than
welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch
below...

When handling writes to /proc/irq, current code is re-programming rte
entries directly. This is not recommended and could potentially cause
chipset's to lockup, or cause missing interrupts.
CONFIG_IRQ_BALANCE does this correctly, where it re-programs only when the
interrupt is pending. The same needs to be done for /proc/irq handling as well.
Otherwise user space irq balancers are really not doing the right thing.
- Changed pending_irq_balance_cpumask to pending_irq_migrate_cpumask for
lack of a generic name.
- added move_irq out of IRQ_BALANCE, and added this same to X86_64
- Added new proc handler for write, so we can do deferred write at irq
handling time.
- Display of /proc/irq/XX/smp_affinity used to display CPU_MASKALL, instead
it now shows only active cpu masks, or exactly what was set.
- Provided a common move_irq implementation, instead of duplicating
when using generic irq framework.
Tested on i386/x86_64 and ia64 with CONFIG_PCI_MSI turned on and off.
Tested UP builds as well.
MSI testing: tbd: I have cards, need to look for a x-over cable, although I
did test an earlier version of this patch. Will test in a couple days.

With cleanups from Dave Hansen <haveblue@us.ibm.com>
SPARSEMEM_EXTREME makes mem_section a one dimensional array of pointers to
mem_sections. This two level layout scheme is able to achieve smaller
memory requirements for SPARSEMEM with the tradeoff of an additional shift
and load when fetching the memory section. The current SPARSEMEM
implementation is a one dimensional array of mem_sections which is the
default SPARSEMEM configuration. The patch attempts isolates the
implementation details of the physical layout of the sparsemem section
array.
SPARSEMEM_EXTREME requires bootmem to be functioning at the time of
memory_present() calls. This is not always feasible, so architectures
which do not need it may allocate everything statically by using
SPARSEMEM_STATIC.

We had a user whose apps weren't working correctly because his "rtc" wasn't
working fully.
For the sake of simplicity, it seems sensible to always enable HPET RTC
emulation.
Remove a special config option for HPET_EMULATE_RTC and make it directly
depend on HPET_TIMER and RTC. This will avoid the hangs when EMULATE_RTC
is not configured and when some userlevel script depends on RTC interrupt,

net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers
menu and up on the top-level where they belong.
To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before
drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been
implemented for all architectures.
Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found
in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25
are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new

For one kernel to report a crash another kernel has created we need
to have 2 kernels loaded simultaneously in memory. To accomplish this
the two kernels need to built to run at different physical addresses.
This patch adds the CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option to the x86 kernel
so we can do just that. You need to know what you are doing and
the ramifications are before changing this value, and most users
won't care so I have made it depend on CONFIG_EMBEDDED
bzImage kernels will work and run at a different address when compiled
with this option but they will still load at 1MB. If you need a kernel
loaded at a different address as well you need to boot a vmlinux.

(The i386 CPU hotplug patch provides infrastructure for some work which Pavel
is doing as well as for ACPI S3 (suspend-to-RAM) work which Li Shaohua
<shaohua.li@intel.com> is doing)
The following provides i386 architecture support for safely unregistering and
registering processors during runtime, updated for the current -mm tree. In
order to avoid dumping cpu hotplug code into kernel/irq/* i dropped the
cpu_online check in do_IRQ() by modifying fixup_irqs(). The difference being
that on cpu offline, fixup_irqs() is called before we clear the cpu from
cpu_online_map and a long delay in order to ensure that we never have any
queued external interrupts on the APICs. There are additional changes to s390
and ppc64 to account for this change.
1) Add CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU
2) disable local APIC timer on dead cpus.
3) Disable preempt around irq balancing to prevent CPUs going down.
4) Print irq stats for all possible cpus.
5) Debugging check for interrupts on offline cpus.
6) Hacky fixup_irqs() to redirect irqs when cpus go off/online.
7) play_dead() for offline cpus to spin inside.
8) Handle offline cpus set in flush_tlb_others().
9) Grab lock earlier in smp_call_function() to prevent CPUs going down.
10) Implement __cpu_disable() and __cpu_die().
11) Enable local interrupts in cpu_enable() after fixup_irqs()
12) Don't fiddle with NMI on dead cpu, but leave intact on other cpus.
13) Program IRQ affinity whilst cpu is still in cpu_online_map on offline.

Sparsemem abstracts the use of discontiguous mem_maps[]. This kind of
mem_map[] is needed by discontiguous memory machines (like in the old
CONFIG_DISCONTIGMEM case) as well as memory hotplug systems. Sparsemem
replaces DISCONTIGMEM when enabled, and it is hoped that it can eventually
become a complete replacement.
A significant advantage over DISCONTIGMEM is that it's completely separated
from CONFIG_NUMA. When producing this patch, it became apparent in that NUMA
and DISCONTIG are often confused.
Another advantage is that sparse doesn't require each NUMA node's ranges to be
contiguous. It can handle overlapping ranges between nodes with no problems,
where DISCONTIGMEM currently throws away that memory.
Sparsemem uses an array to provide different pfn_to_page() translations for
each SECTION_SIZE area of physical memory. This is what allows the mem_map[]
to be chopped up.
In order to do quick pfn_to_page() operations, the section number of the page
is encoded in page->flags. Part of the sparsemem infrastructure enables
sharing of these bits more dynamically (at compile-time) between the
page_zone() and sparsemem operations. However, on 32-bit architectures, the
number of bits is quite limited, and may require growing the size of the
page->flags type in certain conditions. Several things might force this to
occur: a decrease in the SECTION_SIZE (if you want to hotplug smaller areas of
memory), an increase in the physical address space, or an increase in the
number of used page->flags.
One thing to note is that, once sparsemem is present, the NUMA node
information no longer needs to be stored in the page->flags. It might provide
speed increases on certain platforms and will be stored there if there is
room. But, if out of room, an alternate (theoretically slower) mechanism is
used.
This patch introduces CONFIG_FLATMEM. It is used in almost all cases where
there used to be an #ifndef DISCONTIG, because SPARSEMEM and DISCONTIGMEM
often have to compile out the same areas of code.

For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model"
choice in your architecture menu. For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM,
you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool

menu. The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that

Introduce a simple allocator for the NUMA remap space. This space is very
scarce, used for structures which are best allocated node local.
This mechanism is also used on non-NUMA ia64 systems with a vmem_map to keep
the pgdat->node_mem_map initialized in a consistent place for all
architectures.
Issues:
o alloc_remap takes a node_id where we might expect a pgdat which was intended
to allow us to allocate the pgdat's using this mechanism; which we do not yet
do. Could have alloc_remap_node() and alloc_remap_nid() for this purpose.

A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for
platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM
boxen). Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig -
CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g. it is not set on platforms that have no ISA
slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones).
New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API. Set when we have functional
enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc. set of helpers. Next patches in the
series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them.
I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on
what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a
well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely
independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA.
