The function rcar_gen3_thermal_calc_coefs() takes an argument called
'thcode' which shadows the static global 'thcode' variable. This is not
harmful but bad for readability and is harmful for planned changes to
the driver. The THCODE values should be read from hardware fuses if they
are available and only fallback to the global 'thcode' variable if they
are not fused.
Rename the global 'thcode' variable to 'thcodes' to avoid shadowing the
symbol in functions that take it as an argument.

The generic netlink is initialized at subsys_initcall, so far after
the thermal init routine and the thermal generic netlink family

On ŝome platforms, that leads to a memory corruption.

When the network is not configured, the netlink is disabled on all

opt-in.
Fix this by adding a Kconfig option for the netlink notification,

As the change implies multiple stubs and in order to not pollute the
internal thermal header, the thermal_nelink.h has been added and

Initially the thermal framework had a very simple notification
mechanism to send generic netlink messages to the userspace.
The notification function was never called from anywhere and the
corresponding dead code was removed. It was probably a first attempt
to introduce the netlink notification.
At LPC2018, the presentation "Linux thermal: User kernel interface",
proposed to create the notifications to the userspace via a kfifo.
The advantage of the kfifo is the performance. It is usually used from
a 1:1 communication channel where a driver captures data and sends it
as fast as possible to a userspace process.
The drawback is that only one process uses the notification channel
exclusively, thus no other process is allowed to use the channel to
get temperature or notifications.
This patch defines a generic netlink API to discover the current
thermal setup and adds event notifications as well as temperature
sampling. As any genetlink protocol, it can evolve and the versioning
allows to keep the backward compatibility.
In order to prevent the user from getting flooded with data on a
single channel, there are two multicast channels, one for the
temperature sampling when the thermal zone is updated and another one
for the events, so the user can get the events only without the
thermal zone temperature sampling.
Also, a list of commands to discover the thermal setup is added and
can be extended when needed.

The next patch will introduce the generic netlink protocol to handle
events, sampling and command from the thermal framework. In order to
deal with the thermal zone, it uses its unique identifier to
characterize it in the message. Passing an integer is more efficient
than passing an entire string.
This change provides a function returning back a thermal zone pointer
corresponding to the identifier passed as parameter.

Use thermal_zone_device_{en|dis}able() and thermal_zone_device_is_enabled().
Consequently, all set_mode() implementations in drivers:
- can stop modifying tzd's "mode" member,
- shall stop taking tzd's lock, as it is taken in the helpers
- shall stop calling thermal_zone_device_update() as it is called in the
helpers
- can assume they are called when the mode truly changes, so checks to
verify that can be dropped
Not providing set_mode() by a driver no longer prevents the core from
being able to set tzd's mode, so the relevant check in mode_store() is
removed.
Other comments:
- acpi/thermal.c: tz->thermal_zone->mode will be updated only after we
return from set_mode(), so use function parameter in thermal_set_mode()
instead, no need to call acpi_thermal_check() in set_mode()
- thermal/imx_thermal.c: regmap writes and mode assignment are done in
thermal_zone_device_{en|dis}able() and set_mode() callback
- thermal/intel/intel_quark_dts_thermal.c: soc_dts_{en|dis}able() are a
part of set_mode() callback, so they don't need to modify tzd->mode, and
don't need to fall back to the opposite mode if unsuccessful, as the return
value will be propagated to thermal_zone_device_{en|dis}able() and
ultimately tzd's member will not be changed in thermal_zone_device_set_mode().
- thermal/of-thermal.c: no need to set zone->mode to DISABLED in
of_parse_thermal_zones() as a tzd is kzalloc'ed so mode is DISABLED anyway

"Result is undefined for negative divisors if the dividend variable

This patch fixes to satisfy DIV_ROUND_CLOSEST description

The IDSP method doesn't appear to exist on the most recent Intel platforms:
instead, the IDSP data is included in the GDDV blob. Since we probably
don't want to decompress and parse that in-kernel, just allow any UUID to
be written if IDSP is missing.

The platform vendor may expose an array of OEM-specific values to be used
in determining DPTF policy. These are obtained via the ODVP method, and
then simply exposed in sysfs. In addition, they are updated when a
notification is received or when the DPTF policy is changed by userland.

Implementing DPTF properly requires making use of firmware-provided
information associated with the INT3400 device. Calling GDDV provides a
buffer of information which userland can then interpret to determine
appropriate DPTF policy.

For TMU v2, TMSAR registers need to be set properly to get the
accurate temperature values.
Also the temperature read needs to be converted to degree Celsius
since it is in degrees Kelvin.

Moving the ctemp variable out of the private data structure made it
possible to clean up rcar_thermal_update_temp(). Initialize the local
ctemp to the error code to return if the reading fails and just return
it at the end of the function.
It's OK to change the datatype of old, new and ctemp to int as all
values are ANDed with CTEMP (0x3f) before being stored. While at it
change the datatype of the loop variable 'i' to to unsigned int.

tsens-common.c has outlived its usefuless. It was created expecting lots
of custom routines per version of the TSENS IP. We haven't needed those,
there is now only data in the version-specific files.
Merge the code for tsens-common.c into tsens.c. As a result,
- Remove any unnecessary forward declarations in tsens.h.
- Add a Linaro copyright to tsens.c.
- Fixup the Makefile to remove tsens-common.c.
- Where it made sense, fix some 80-column alignments in the
tsens-common.c code being copied over.
There is no functional change with this patch.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

Today, there is no user for the cpuidle cooling device. The targetted
platform is ARM and ARM64.
The cpuidle and the cpufreq cooling device are based on the device tree.
As the cpuidle cooling device can have its own configuration depending
on the platform and the available idle states. The DT node description
will give the optional properties to set the cooling device up.
Do no longer rely on the CPU node which is prone to error and will
lead to a confusion in the DT because the cpufreq cooling device is
also using it. Let initialize the cpuidle cooling device with the DT
binding.

Add VTM thermal support. In the Voltage Thermal Management
Module(VTM), K3 AM654 supplies a voltage reference and a temperature
sensor feature that are gathered in the band gap voltage and
temperature sensor (VBGAPTS) module. The band gap provides current and
voltage reference for its internal circuits and other analog IP
blocks. The analog-to-digital converter (ADC) produces an output value
that is proportional to the silicon temperature.
Currently reading temperatures only is supported. There are no

Now that devfreq supports limiting the frequency range of a device
through PM QoS make use of it instead of disabling OPPs that should
not be used.
The switch from disabling OPPs to PM QoS introduces a subtle behavioral
change in case of conflicting requests (min > max): PM QoS gives
precedence to the MIN_FREQUENCY request, while higher OPPs disabled

Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar:
"The main changes in this cycle are:
- Various NUMA scheduling updates: harmonize the load-balancer and
NUMA placement logic to not work against each other. The intended
result is better locality, better utilization and fewer migrations.
- Introduce Thermal Pressure tracking and optimizations, to improve
task placement on thermally overloaded systems.
- Implement frequency invariant scheduler accounting on (some) x86
CPUs. This is done by observing and sampling the 'recent' CPU
frequency average at ~tick boundaries. The CPU provides this data
via the APERF/MPERF MSRs. This hopefully makes our capacity
estimates more precise and keeps tasks on the same CPU better even
if it might seem overloaded at a lower momentary frequency. (As
usual, turbo mode is a complication that we resolve by observing
the maximum frequency and renormalizing to it.)
- Add asymmetric CPU capacity wakeup scan to improve capacity
utilization on asymmetric topologies. (big.LITTLE systems)
- PSI fixes and optimizations.
- RT scheduling capacity awareness fixes & improvements.
- Optimize the CONFIG_RT_GROUP_SCHED constraints code.
- Misc fixes, cleanups and optimizations - see the changelog for
details"

The WARN_ON macros are used at the entry functions state2power() and
set_cur_state().
state2power() is called with the max_state retrieved from
get_max_state which returns cpufreq_cdev->max_level, then it check if
max_state is > cpufreq_cdev->max_level. The test does not really makes
sense but let's assume we want to make sure to catch an error if the
code evolves. However the WARN_ON is overkill.
set_cur_state() is also called from userspace if we write to the
sysfs. It is easy to see a stack dumped by just writing to sysfs
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/cur_state a value greater than
"max_level". A bit scary. Returing -EINVAL is enough.

It appears the recent changes with the per-policy frequency QoS
introduced a regression as reported by:

The function freq_qos_update_request returns 0 or 1 describing update

cpufreq_set_cur_state returns 0 on success or an error code otherwise.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

The thermal subsystem may have relied on sysfs in 2008 when it
was introduced, but these days the thermal zones will more often
than not come from the hardware descriptions and not from sysfs.
Drop the "Generic" phrases as well: there are no non-generic
drivers that I know of, the thermal framework is by definition
generic.

The desired behavior of the driver is to generate an interrupt and call
thermal_zone_device_update() as soon as the temperature have changed
more then one degree.
When the set_trips operation was implemented it was believed that the
trip window set by the framework would move around the current
temperature and the hysteresis value described in devicetree. The
behavior of the framework is however to set a window based on the trip
points described in devicetree.
Remove the set_trips operation which was not used correctly and update
the temperatures that triggers interrupts directly from the interrupt
handler.

maximum capacity available for tasks to run on the particular CPU is
reduced. Delta between the original maximum capacity and capped maximum

With the STM32 thermal peripheral, it is not possible to dump the
temperature that has caused the interrupt.
When the temperature reaches the low threshold, we generally read
a temperature that is a little bit higher than the low threshold.
This maybe due to sampling precision, and also because the CPU becomes
hotter when it quits WFI mode.
In that case, the framework does not change the trip points. This leads
to a lot of low threshold interrupts.
The fix is to set the low threshold value 0.5 degrees Celsius
below the actual request.
The problem is not so frequent with the high threshold and it would
no be a good idea to set the threshold value higher than the request.

When devm_thermal_zone_of_sensor_register() is called from
hwmon_thermal_add_sensor() it is possible that the relevant sensor is
missing an OF node. In this case thermal_zone_of_sensor_register() returns
-EINVAL which causes hwmon_thermal_add_sensor() to fail as well. This patch
changes relevant return code of thermal_zone_of_sensor_register() to
-ENODEV, which is tolerated by hwmon_thermal_add_sensor().
Here is a particular case of such behaviour: the Marvell ethernet PHYs
driver registers hwmon device for the built-in temperature sensor (see
drivers/net/phy/marvell.c). Since the sensor doesn't have associated OF
node devm_hwmon_device_register() returns error which ultimately causes
failure of the PHY driver's probe function.

At the time the brcmstb_thermal driver and its binding were merged, the
DT binding did not make the coefficients properties a mandatory one,
therefore all users of the brcmstb_thermal driver out there have a non
functional implementation with zero coefficients. Even if these
properties were provided, the formula used for computation is incorrect.
The coefficients are entirely process specific (right now, only 28nm is
supported) and not board or SoC specific, it is therefore appropriate to
hard code them in the driver given the compatibility string we are
probed with which has to be updated whenever a new process is
introduced.
We remove the existing coefficients definition since subsequent patches
are going to add support for a new process and will introduce new
coefficients as well.

Fix up inconsistent usage of upper and lowercase letters in "Samsung"
and "Exynos" names.
"SAMSUNG" and "EXYNOS" are not abbreviations but regular trademarked
names. Therefore they should be written with lowercase letters starting
with capital letter.
The lowercase "Exynos" name is promoted by its manufacturer Samsung
Electronics Co., Ltd., in advertisement materials and on website.
Although advertisement materials usually use uppercase "SAMSUNG", the
lowercase version is used in all legal aspects (e.g. on Wikipedia and in
privacy/legal statements on
https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/privacy-global/).

The cpu idle cooling device offers a new method to cool down a CPU by
injecting idle cycles at runtime.
It has some similarities with the intel power clamp driver but it is
actually designed to be more generic and relying on the idle injection
powercap framework.
The idle injection duration is fixed while the running duration is
variable. That allows to have control on the device reactivity for the
user experience.
An idle state powering down the CPU or the cluster will allow to drop
the static leakage, thus restoring the heat capacity of the SoC. It
can be set with a trip point between the hot and the critical points,
giving the opportunity to prevent a hard reset of the system when the
cpufreq cooling fails to cool down the CPU.
With more sophisticated boards having a per core sensor, the idle
cooling device allows to cool down a single core without throttling
the compute capacity of several cpus belonging to the same clock line,
so it could be used in collaboration with the cpufreq cooling device.

The newly introduced Energy Model framework manages power cost tables in
a generic way. Moreover, it supports several types of models since the
tables can come from DT or firmware (through SCMI) for example. On the
other hand, the cpu_cooling subsystem manages its own power cost tables
using only DT data.
In order to avoid the duplication of data in the kernel, and in order to
enable IPA with EMs coming from more than just DT, remove the private
tables from cpu_cooling.c and migrate it to using the centralized EM
framework. Doing so should have no visible functional impact for
existing users of IPA since:
- recent extenstions to the the PM_OPP infrastructure enable the
registration of EMs in PM_EM using the DT property used by IPA;
- the existing upstream cpufreq drivers marked with the
'CPUFREQ_IS_COOLING_DEV' flag all use the aforementioned PM_OPP
infrastructure, which means they all support PM_EM. The only two
exceptions are qoriq-cpufreq which doesn't in fact use an EM and
scmi-cpufreq which doesn't use DT for power costs.
For existing users of cpu_cooling, PM_EM tables will contain the exact
same power values that IPA used to compute on its own until now. The
only new dependency for them is to compile in CONFIG_ENERGY_MODEL.
The case where the thermal subsystem is used without an Energy Model
(cpufreq_cooling_ops) is handled by looking directly at CPUFreq's
frequency table which is already a dependency for cpu_cooling.c anyway.
Since the thermal framework expects the cooling states in a particular
order, bail out whenever the CPUFreq table is unsorted, since that is
fairly uncommon in general, and there are currently no users of
cpu_cooling for this use-case.

Currently a multiply operation is being performed on two int values
and the result is being assigned to a u64, presumably because the
end result is expected to be probably larger than an int. However,
because the multiply is an int multiply one can get overflow. Avoid
the overflow by casting degc to a u64 to force a u64 multiply.
Also use div_u64 for the divide as suggested by Daniel Lezcano.

Depending on the IP version, TSENS supports upper, lower and critical
threshold interrupts. We only add support for upper and lower threshold
interrupts for now.
TSENSv2 has an irq [status|clear|mask] bit tuple for each sensor while
earlier versions only have a single bit per sensor to denote status and
clear. These differences are handled transparently by the interrupt
handler. At each interrupt, we reprogram the new upper and lower threshold

There are two fields - id and hw_id - to track what sensor an action was
to performed on. This was because the sensors connected to a TSENS IP
might not be contiguous i.e. 1, 2, 4, 5 with 3 being skipped.
This causes confusion in the code which uses hw_id sometimes and id
other times (tsens_get_temp, tsens_get_trend).
Switch to only using the hw_id field to track the physical ID of the
sensor. When we iterate through all the sensors connected to an IP
block, we use an index i to loop through the list of sensors, and then
return the actual hw_id that is registered on that index.

Replace the CPU device PM QoS used for the management of min and max
frequency constraints in cpufreq (and its users) with per-policy
frequency QoS to avoid problems with cpufreq policies covering
more then one CPU.
Namely, a cpufreq driver is registered with the subsys interface
which calls cpufreq_add_dev() for each CPU, starting from CPU0, so
currently the PM QoS notifiers are added to the first CPU in the
policy (i.e. CPU0 in the majority of cases).
In turn, when the cpufreq driver is unregistered, the subsys interface
doing that calls cpufreq_remove_dev() for each CPU, starting from CPU0,
and the PM QoS notifiers are only removed when cpufreq_remove_dev() is
called for the last CPU in the policy, say CPUx, which as a rule is
not CPU0 if the policy covers more than one CPU. Then, the PM QoS
notifiers cannot be removed, because CPUx does not have them, and
they are still there in the device PM QoS notifiers list of CPU0,
which prevents new PM QoS notifiers from being registered for CPU0
on the next attempt to register the cpufreq driver.
The same issue occurs when the first CPU in the policy goes offline
before unregistering the driver.
After this change it does not matter which CPU is the policy CPU at
the driver registration time and whether or not it is online all the
time, because the frequency QoS is per policy and not per CPU.

This patch rewrites the DB8500 thermal sensor to be a
pure OF sensor, so that it can be used with thermal zones
defined in the device tree.
This driver was initially merged before we had generic
thermal zone device tree bindings, and now it gets
modernized to the way we do things these days.
The old driver depended on a set of trigger points
provided in the device tree or platform data to
interpolate the current temperature between trigger
points depending on whether the trend was rising or
falling. This was bad because the trigger points should
be used for defining temperature zone policies and
bind to cooling devices.
As the PRCMU (power reset control management unit) can
only issue IRQs when we pass temperature trigger points
upward or downward We instead define a number of
temperature points inside the driver ranging from
15 to 100 degrees celsius. The effect is that when
we register the device we quickly trigger 15, 20 ... up
to the room temperature in succession and then we
get continous event IRQs also under normal operating
conditions, and the temperature of the system is now
reported more accurately (+/- 2.5 degrees celsius)
while in the past the first trigger point was at 70
degrees and the average temperature was simply reported
as 35 degrees celsius (between 70 degrees and 0) until
we passed 70 degrees which didn't accurately represent
the temperature of the system.
As a result of dropping all the trigger points from the
driver and reusing the core DT thermal zone management
code we reduce the code footprint quite a bit.

At some point there was an attempt to convert the DB8500
thermal sensor to device tree: a probe path was added
and the device tree was augmented for the Snowball board.
The switchover was never completed: instead the thermal
devices came from from the PRCMU MFD device and the probe
on the Snowball was confused as another set of configuration
appeared from the device tree.
Move over to a device-tree only approach, as we fixed up
the device trees.

When calling thermal_add_hwmon_sysfs(), the device type is sanitized by
