The generic packet receive code takes care of setting
netdev->last_rx when necessary, for the sake of the
bonding ARP monitor.
Drivers need not do it any more.
Some cases had to be skipped over because the drivers
were making use of the ->last_rx value themselves.

The de2104x returns sometimes a wrong MAC address. The wrong one is
like the original one, but it comes with an one byte shift. I found
this bug on an older alpha ev5 cpu. More details are available in Gentoo

The de2104x did a pci_disable_device() in it's close function, but
the open function never does a pci_enable_device() and assumes that
the device is already enabled. Considering that downing the interface
is just a temporary thing the pci_disable_device() isn't a pretty good
idea and removing it from the close function just fixes the bug.

If the RTNL is held when we invoke flush_scheduled_work() we could
deadlock. One such case is linkwatch, it is a work struct which tries
to grab the RTNL semaphore.
The most common case are net driver ->stop() methods. The
simplest conversion is to instead use cancel_{delayed_}work_sync()
explicitly on the various work struct the driver uses.
This is an OK transformation because these work structs are doing
things like resetting the chip, restarting link negotiation, and so
forth. And if we're bringing down the device, we're about to turn the
chip off and reset it anways. So if we cancel a pending work event,
that's fine here.
Some drivers were working around this deadlock by using a msleep()
polling loop of some sort, and those cases are converted to instead
use cancel_{delayed_}work_sync() as well.

This patch adds netpoll support for the uli526x ethernet driver --
simply call the interrupt handler for polling.
To do this without disable_irq()/enable_irq() pair we should fully
protect the handler. Luckily, it's already using irqsave spinlock,
the only unprotected place is interrupts re-enabling write. It was
safe to re-enable interrupts without holding the spinlock, but with
netpoll possibility now it doesn't seem so.

winbond-840 shares tulip.h with the tulip driver, because they share
many (but not all) of the same register definitions.
This is useful for the register definitions, but not helpful when it
comes to symbols that are shared among the tulip driver's C modules,
but not meant to be shared outside that one driver.
Thus, PKT_BUF_SZ is a symbol internal to tulip, but it was intruding
upon a similar symbol in winbond-840's namespace. This was not a
problem as long as the two symbols had the same value, but upcoming
patches result in differing symbol values.

If "location" is > "addr_len" bits, the high bits of location would interfere
with the READ_CMD sent to the eeprom controller.
A patch was submitted to bug:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4420
which simply truncated the "location", read whatever was in "location
modulo addr_len", and returned that value. That avoids confusing the
eeprom but seems like the wrong solution to me.
Correct would be to not read beyond "1 << addr_len" address of the eeprom.
I am submitting two changes to implement this:
1) tulip_read_eeprom will return zero (since we can't return -EINVAL)
if this is attempted (defensive programming).
2) In tulip_core.c, fix the tulip_read_eeprom caller so they don't
iterate past addr_len bits and make sure the entire tp->eeprom[]
array is cleared.
I konw we don't strictly need both. I would prefer both in the tree
since it documents the issue and provides a second "defense" from
the bug from creeping back in.

Changeset 16b110c3fd (dmfe warning fix)
bothed up the offsets read from the SROM so that it doesn't read the
same datums it used to.
The change made transformations like turning:
"srom + 34"
into
"(__le32 *)srom + 34/4"
which doesn't work because 4 does not divide evenly
into 34 so we're using a different pointer offset
than in the original code.
I've changed theses cases in dmfe_parse_srom() to
consistently use "(type *)(srom + offset)" preserving
the offsets from the original code.

get-tx-csum
get-sg
get-tso

the default ethtool_op_xxx behavior is fine for all drivers, so we
permit op==NULL to imply the default behavior.
This provides a more uniform behavior across all drivers, eliminating
ethtool(8) "ioctl not supported" errors on older drivers that had
not been updated for the latest sub-ioctls.
The ethtool_op_xxx() functions are left exported, in case anyone
wishes to call them directly from a driver-private implementation --
a not-uncommon case. Should an ethtool_op_xxx() helper remain unused
for a while, except by net/core/ethtool.c, we can un-export it at a

Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net
device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several
queues.
In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the
structure representing the poll is independant from the net
device itself.
The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from:
int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget)
to
int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget)
The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or
the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get
abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping
dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the
caller upon return.
The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data
structures.
Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI
instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the
napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures,
only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances
it may have per-device.

Instead of all drivers reading pci config space to get the revision
ID, they can now use the pci_device->revision member.
This exposes some issues where drivers where reading a word or a dword
for the revision number, and adding useless error-handling around the
read. Some drivers even just read it for no purpose of all.
In devices where the revision ID is being copied over and used in what
appears to be the equivalent of hotpath, I have left the copy code
and the cached copy as not to influence the driver's performance.

So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes
on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the
layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4
64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN...

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

Add modalias attribute support for the almost forgotten now EISA bus and
(at least some) EISA-aware modules.
The modalias entry looks like (for an 3c509 NIC):
eisa:sTCM5093
and the in-module alias like:
eisa:sTCM5093*
The patch moves struct eisa_device_id declaration from include/linux/eisa.h
to include/linux/mod_devicetable.h (so that the former now #includes the
latter), adds proper MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(eisa, ...) statements for all
drivers with EISA IDs I found (some drivers already have that DEVICE_TABLE
declared), and adds recognision of __mod_eisa_device_table to
scripts/mod/file2alias.c so that proper modules.alias will be generated.
There's no support for /lib/modules/$kver/modules.eisamap, as it's not used
by any existing tools, and because with in-kernel modalias mechanism those
maps are obsolete anyway.
The rationale for this patch is:
a) to make EISA bus to act as other busses with modalias
support, to unify driver loading
b) to foget about EISA finally - with this patch, kernel
(who still supports EISA) will be the only one who knows
how to choose the necessary drivers for this bus ;)

Becker-derived drivers often have the 'io_size' member in their chip
info struct, indicating the minimum required size of the I/O resource
(usually a PCI BAR). For many situations, this number is either
constant or irrelevant (due to pci_iomap convenience behavior).
This change removes the io_size invariant member, and replaces it with a
compile-time constant.

When in-kernel net drivers branched from Donald Becker's vanilla driver
set, in the days before BitKeeper and git, a driver changelog was
maintained in the driver source code. These days, the kernel's
changelog is far superior and much more accurate, so the in-driver
changelogs are removed.
Another relic of the Becker/kernel split was version numbering, using
"foo-LKx.y.z" notation, resulting in weird version numbers like
"1.17b-LK1.1.9". These drivers are for older hardware, and see few
changes these days, so the version numbers were all bumped to something
more simple.
Finally, in xircom_tulip_cb specifically, an additional cleanup removes
the always-enabled CARDBUS cpp macro.

Symbols such as PCI_USES_IO, PCI_ADDR0, etc. originated from Donald
Becker's net driver template, but have been long unused. Remove.
In a few drivers, this allows the further eliminate of the pci_flags (or
just plain flags) member in the template driver probe structure.
Most of this logic is simply open-coded in most drivers, since it never
changes.
Made a few other cleanups while I was in there, too:
* constify, __devinitdata several PCI ID tables
* replace table terminating entries such as "{0,}," and "{NULL},"

Manual fixup for conflict in drivers/net/tulip/winbond-840.c
Various drivers use xmit_lock internally to synchronise with their
transmission routines. They do so without setting xmit_lock_owner.
This is fine as long as netpoll is not in use.
With netpoll it is possible for deadlocks to occur if xmit_lock_owner
isn't set. This is because if a printk occurs while xmit_lock is held
and xmit_lock_owner is not set can cause netpoll to attempt to take
xmit_lock recursively.
While it is possible to resolve this by getting netpoll to use
trylock, it is suboptimal because netpoll's sole objective is to
maximise the chance of getting the printk out on the wire. So
delaying or dropping the message is to be avoided as much as possible.
So the only alternative is to always set xmit_lock_owner. The
following patch does this by introducing the netif_tx_lock family of
functions that take care of setting/unsetting xmit_lock_owner.
I renamed xmit_lock to _xmit_lock to indicate that it should not be
used directly. I didn't provide irq versions of the netif_tx_lock
functions since xmit_lock is meant to be a BH-disabling lock.
This is pretty much a straight text substitution except for a small
bug fix in winbond. It currently uses
netif_stop_queue/spin_unlock_wait to stop transmission. This is
unsafe as an IRQ can potentially wake up the queue. So it is safer to
use netif_tx_disable.
The hamradio bits used spin_lock_irq but it is unnecessary as
xmit_lock must never be taken in an IRQ handler.

This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the
powerpc platform probe code to use a better mechanism. With this,
board support files can simply declare a new machine type with a
macro, and implement a probe() function that uses the flattened
device-tree to detect if they apply for a given machine.
We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of
_machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. This commit also
changes various drivers to use the new macro instead of looking at
_machine.
