For some time my at91sam9260 board with JFFS2 on serial flash (m25p80)
would hang when accessing the serial flash and SPI bus. Slowing the SPI
clock down to 9 MHz reduced the occurrence of the hang from "always"
during boot to a nuisance level that allowed other SW development to
continue. Finally had to address this issue when an application stresses
the I/O to always cause a hang.
Hang seems to be caused by a missed SPI interrupt, so that the task ends
up waiting forever after calling spi_sync(). The fix has 2 parts. First
is to halt the DMA engine before the "current" PDC registers are loaded.
This ensures that the "next" registers are loaded before the DMA operation
takes off. The second part of the fix is a kludge that adds a
"completion" interrupt in case the ENDRX interrupt for the last segment of
the DMA chaining operation was missed.
The patch allows the SPI clock for the serial flash to be increased from 9
MHz to 15 MHz (or more?). No hangs or SPI overruns were encountered.
Haavard: while this patch does indeed improve things, I still see overruns
and CRC errors on my NGW100 board when running the DataFlash at 10 MHz.
However, I think some improvement is better than nothing, so I'm passing
this on for inclusion in 2.6.27.

The original "Pass the bus number we expect the S3C24XX SPI driver to
attach to via the platform data." [1] patch was mis-sent, and missed two
important parts of the diff, which was to actually set the bus_num field
and add the relevant field to the platform data.
The previous commit 50f426b55d promised to
add a bus_num field, but failed to include the two hunks that added this
field to include/asm-arm/arch-s3c2410/spi.h and then pass it to the spi
core when creating the new master field in drivers/spi/spi_s3c24xx.c.

The block transfer routine in the mpc52xx psc spi driver misinterpret
the datasheet. According to the processor datasheet the chipselect is
held as long as the EOF is not written.
Theoretically blocks of any sizes can be transferred in this way. The
old routine however writes an EOF after every word, which has the size
of size_of_word. This makes the transfer slow.
Also fixed some duplicate code.

Add per-device dma_mapping_ops support for CONFIG_X86_64 as POWER
architecture does:
This enables us to cleanly fix the Calgary IOMMU issue that some devices
are not behind the IOMMU (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/5/8/423).
I think that per-device dma_mapping_ops support would be also helpful for
KVM people to support PCI passthrough but Andi thinks that this makes it
difficult to support the PCI passthrough (see the above thread). So I
CC'ed this to KVM camp. Comments are appreciated.
A pointer to dma_mapping_ops to struct dev_archdata is added. If the
pointer is non NULL, DMA operations in asm/dma-mapping.h use it. If it's
NULL, the system-wide dma_ops pointer is used as before.
If it's useful for KVM people, I plan to implement a mechanism to register
a hook called when a new pci (or dma capable) device is created (it works
with hot plugging). It enables IOMMUs to set up an appropriate
dma_mapping_ops per device.
The major obstacle is that dma_mapping_error doesn't take a pointer to the
device unlike other DMA operations. So x86 can't have dma_mapping_ops per
device. Note all the POWER IOMMUs use the same dma_mapping_error function
so this is not a problem for POWER but x86 IOMMUs use different
dma_mapping_error functions.
The first patch adds the device argument to dma_mapping_error. The patch
is trivial but large since it touches lots of drivers and dma-mapping.h in
all the architecture.
This patch:
dma_mapping_error() doesn't take a pointer to the device unlike other DMA
operations. So we can't have dma_mapping_ops per device.
Note that POWER already has dma_mapping_ops per device but all the POWER
IOMMUs use the same dma_mapping_error function. x86 IOMMUs use device
argument.

spi_new_device() allocates and registers an spi device all in one swoop.
If the driver needs to add extra data to the spi_device before it is
registered, then this causes problems. This is needed for OF device
tree support so that the SPI device tree helper can add a pointer to
the device node after the device is allocated, but before the device
is registered. OF aware SPI devices can then retrieve data out of the
device node to populate a platform data structure.
This patch splits the allocation and registration portions of code out
of spi_new_device() and creates two new functions; spi_alloc_device()
and spi_register_device(). spi_new_device() is modified to use the new
functions for allocation and registration. None of the existing users
of spi_new_device() should be affected by this change.
Drivers using the new API can forego the use of spi_board_info
structure to describe the device layout and populate data into the
spi_device structure directly.
This change is in preparation for adding an OF device tree parser to
generate spi_devices based on data in the device tree.

Improve PIO transfer mode of au1550 spi controller by continuing of spi
transfer, instead of aborting transfer when transmit underflow interrupt
occurrs.
Verified by oscilloscope that the spi clock pauses on trasmit underflow,
so transfer continuation is perfectly valid even though au1550 datasheet
says that on tx underflow zeroes will be transfered.
Also make some error messages more specific.

Currently, 'modalias' in the spi_device structure is a 'const char *'.
The spi_new_device() function fills in the modalias value from a passed in
spi_board_info data block. Since it is a pointer copy, the new spi_device
remains dependent on the spi_board_info structure after the new spi_device
is registered (no other fields in spi_device directly depend on the
spi_board_info structure; all of the other data is copied).
This causes a problem when dynamically propulating the list of attached
SPI devices. For example, in arch/powerpc, the list of SPI devices can be
populated from data in the device tree. With the current code, the device
tree adapter must kmalloc() a new spi_board_info structure for each new
SPI device it finds in the device tree, and there is no simple mechanism
in place for keeping track of these allocations.
This patch changes modalias from a 'const char *' to a fixed char array.
By copying the modalias string instead of referencing it, the dependency
on the spi_board_info structure is eliminated and an outside caller does
not need to maintain a separate spi_board_info allocation for each device.
If searched through the code to the best of my ability for any references
to modalias which may be affected by this change and haven't found
anything. It has been tested with the lite5200b platform in arch/powerpc.

This got broken by the recent "fix rmmod $spi_driver while spidev-user is
active". I tested the rmmod & write path but didn't check the read path.
I am sorry. The read logic changed and spidev_sync_read() +
spidev_sync_write() do not return zero on success anymore but the number
of bytes that has been transfered over the bus. This patch changes the
logic and copy_to_user() gets called again.
The write path returns the number of bytes which are written to the
underlying device what may be less than the requested size. This patch
makes the same change to the read path or else we request a read of 20
bytes, get 10, don't call copy to user and report to the user that we read
10 bytes.

This addresses other oopsing paths in "spidev" by changing how it manages
refcounting. It decouples the lifecycle of the per-device data from the
class device (not just the spi device):
- Use class_{create,destroy} not class_{register,unregister}.
- Use device_{create,destroy} not device_{register,unregister}.
- Free the per-device data only when TWO conditions are true:
* Driver is unbound from underlying SPI device, and
* Device is no longer open (new)
Also, spi_{get,set}_drvdata not dev_{get,set}_drvdata for simpler code.

Somehow the spidev code forgot to include a critical mechanism: when the
underlying device is removed (e.g. spi_master rmmod), open file
descriptors must be prevented from issuing new I/O requests to that
device. On penalty of the oopsing reported by Sebastian Siewior
<bigeasy@tglx.de> ...
This is a partial fix, adding handshaking between the lower level (SPI
messaging) and the file operations using the spi_dev. (It also fixes an
issue where reads and writes didn't return the number of bytes sent or
received.)
There's still a refcounting issue to be addressed (separately).

The current driver may cause glitches on SPI CLK line since one must disable
the SPI controller before changing any HW settings. Fix this by implementing
a local spi_transfer function that won't change speed and/or word size while
CS is active.
While doing that heavy lifting a few other issues were addressed too:
- Make word size 16 and 32 work too.
- Honor bits_per_word and speed_hz in spi transaction.
- Optimize the common path.
This also stops using the "bitbang" framework (except for a few constants).

Updates to the i.MX SPI controller driver:
1) Some comments changed and/or added.
2) End of transfers is now managed on TXFIFO empty interrupt after the
last write to TXFIFO. This speeds interrupt execution by removing
the wait for TXFIFO to become empty. On TXFIFO empty interrupt the
handler needs only to poll for the end of the ongoing transaction
(SPI_CONTROL_XCH) to close the transfer.
(2.1) Write only transfers are closed flushing RXFIFO.
(2.2) Read transfers are closed reading trailing bytes from RXFIFO.
(2.3) Read transfers where RXFIFO overrun occurred are closed by
flushing RXFIFO and aborting the message.
3) Fifos are now flushed via SPI disable after the end of ongoing
transaction.

A spi transfer with zero length is not invalid. For example, such
transfer (len == 0 && delay_usecs != 0) can be used to achieve delay
before first CLK edge after chipselect assertion.

SPI controller drivers return number of bytes actually transfered from
bitbang->txrx_bufs() method. This updates handling of short transfers (where
the transfer size is less than requested):
- Even zero byte short transfers should report errors;
- Include short transfers in the total of transferred bytes;
- Use EREMOTEIO (like USB) not EMSGSIZE to report short transfers
Short transfers don't normally mean invalid message sizes, but if the
underlying controller driver needs to use EMSGSIZE it can still do so.

Commit id 94f389485e (Separate MPC52xx PSC FIOF
regsiters from the rest of PSC) split the PSC fifo registers away from the
core PSC regs. Doing so broke the mpc52xx_psc_spi driver.
This patch teaches the mpc52xx_psc_spi driver about the new PSC fifo
register definitions.

Fixes a sequencing bug in spi driver pxa2xx_spi.c in which the chip select
for a transfer may be asserted before the clock polarity is set on the
interface. As a result of this bug, the clock signal may have the wrong
polarity at transfer start, so it may need to make an extra half transition
before the intended clock/data signals begin. (This probably means all
transfers are one bit out of sequence.)
This only occurs on the first transfer following a change in clock polarity
in systems using more than one more than one such polarity. The fix
assures that the clock mode is properly set before asserting chip select.
This bug was introduced in a patch merged on 2006/12/10, kernel 2.6.20.
The patch defines an additional bit in: include/asm-arm/arch-pxa/regs-ssp.h
for 2.6.25 and newer kernels but this addition must be made in:
include/asm-arm/arch-pxa/pxa-regs.h for kernels between 2.6.20 and 2.6.24,

The atmel_spi driver does not initialize clock polarity correctly (except for
at91rm9200 CS0 channel) in some case.
The atmel_spi driver uses gpio-controlled chipselect. OTOH spi clock signal
is controlled by CSRn.CPOL bit, but this register controls clock signal
correctly only in 'real transfer' duration. At the time of cs_activate()
call, CSRn.CPOL will be initialized correctly, but the controller do not know
which channel is to be used next, so clock signal will stay at the inactive
state of last transfer. If clock polarity of new transfer and last transfer
was differ, new transfer will start with wrong clock signal state.
For example, if you started SPI MODE 2 or 3 transfer after SPI MODE 0 or 1
transfer, the clock signal state at the assertion of chipselect will be low.
Of course this will violates SPI transfer.
This patch is short term solution for this problem. It makes all CSRn.CPOL
match for the transfer before activating chipselect. For longer term, the
best fix might be to let NPCS0 stay selected permanently in MR and overwrite
CSR0 with to the new slave's settings before asserting CS.

Remove some more references to dev->power.power_state. That field is overdue
for removal, but we can't do that while it's still referenced in the kernel.
The only reason to update it was to make the /sys/devices/.../power/state
files (now removed) work better.

PBX 2 SPI devices need the nonstandard "cs change per word" mechanism.
This patch is one of three updating this driver to make the last data bits get
sent before advancing the transfer ... in this case, before the chipselect
gets deactivated.

Add support for SPI over SCI pins. SCI is a very simple serial controller
block that can be found on older SuperH processors. In theory it is
possible to use the SCI hardware block in syncronous mode, but this version
of the driver simply hooks up the bit banging code on the SCI pins.

The two S3C SPI master drivers got merged without much review, so I just
noticed that they're doing something that the SPI core code is responsible
for, rather than any adapter driver: they try to register SPI devices.
This removes that support from those drivers so they act normally.
Interestingly, none of the current boards are affected. So it's a net code
shrink with no loss of functionality.

In atmel_spi_next_xfer, xfer can be NULL because the next transfer may
already have been submitted to the PDC (using DMA chaining). This can
cause an oops, since the debug message assumed it was never null. The
fix changes how those debug messages are issued, ensuring that one is
issued each time a transfer is started instead of once per call.
Also, properly indent the "can this transfer be chained" test so it's
not hidden as if it were non-conditional code.

Add support for chained transfers in the atmel_spi driver, letting the DMA
controller switch to the next buffer pair without CPU intervention. This
reduced I/O latencies by about 2% in one bulk I/O test. It should also help
work around several interrelated errata affecting chipselect 0 on at91rm9200
chips.
Almost all of the changes are in the reworked atmel_spi_next_xfer() function.
That's now called with the driver in one of three states:
1. It isn't transferring anything (in which case the first transfer
of the current message is going to be sent)
2. It has finished transfering a non-chainable transfer (in which
case it will go to the next transfer in the message)
3. It has finished transfering a chained transfer (in which case the
next transfer is already queued)
After that it will queue the next transfer if it can be chained.

Don't insert (undesirable) delays between consecutive words (DLYBCT) or when
activating chipselects (DLYBS).
Removing the between-word delays improves the performance of bulk transfers
(such as mtd_dataflash, m25p80, mmc_spi) significantly. In one test, the
improvement was a factor of more than eight!
(The large DLYBCT value came from the legacy at91 SPI driver, and it's not
clear why it used such a huge value.)

Thus no need to divide sysclk in the spi_mpc83xx.

It is dangerous for an mpc52xx device driver to modify the port_config
register. If the driver is probed incorrectly, it will change the pin
IO configuration in ways which may not be compatible with the board.
port_config should be set up by the bootloader, or failing that, in
the platform setup code in arch/powerpc/platforms/52xx.
Also, modifying CDM registers directly can cause a race condition with
other drivers. Instead call a common routine to modify CDM settings.

Update MPC5200 drivers to also look for compatible properties in the
form "fsl,mpc5200-*" to better conform to open firmware generic names
recommended practice as published here:

This patch should *not* break compatibility with older device trees
which do not use the 'fsl,' prefix. The drivers will still bind against
the older names also.

information of the designated SSP port.
2. remove those IRQ/memory request code, ssp_request() has done that for
the driver
3. the SPI platform device is thus made psuedo, no resource (memory/IRQ)
has to be defined, all will be retreived by ssp_request()
4. introduce ssp_get_clk_div() to handle controller difference in clock
divisor setting
5. use clk_xxx() API for clock enable/disable, and clk_get_rate() to
handle the different SSP clock frequency between different processors

But because c is decremented after the test, c will never be zero and
rx+tx will not be enabled. This breaks RX_ONLY mode PIO transfers.

We have a wifi module connected to the spi bus and got sometimes FIFO
overrun errors on the spi bus.
After some investigation i found that the driver loads the TCR (transmit
count) register before the RCR (receive count). When the transfer list is
not empty the atmel_spi_next_message is called while tx and rx are enabled.
As soon as the TCR is loaded, hardware starts transfer and causes a rx
fifo overrun because the RCR is not loaded yet.
Load the RCR before the TCR. After this patch the fifo overrun disapears
at out setup.

Fix SPI driver to work with SPI flash ST M25P16 on bf548
Currently the SPI driver enables the SPI controller and sets the SPI baud
register for each SPI transfer. But they should never be changed within a SPI
message session, in which several SPI transfers are pumped.
This patch moves SPI setting to the begining of a message session, and
never disables SPI controller until an error occurs.

Simplify spi_sync calling convention, eliminating the need to check both
the return value AND the message->status. In consequence, this corrects
misbehaviours of spi_read and spi_write (which only checked the former) and
their callers.

Add comment to at25 driver that it's for EEPROM chips, not FLASH
chips ... the AT25 series has both types of chip, and sometimes
they're even pin-compatible. The command sets are different, as
is the treatment of erasure. (FLASH needs explicit erasure, but
with EEPROM it's implicit.) Note that all vendors seem to have
this same confusion in their *25* series SPI memory parts.

If we specify an GPIO which cannot be used for the purpose, then assume
that the GPIO is not to be used and do not try and configure it. This can
be the case where the SPI bus is TX only.

is wrong; for one thing, it's a bad C (it's what uintptr_t is for; in general
we are not even promised that ptrdiff_t is large enough to hold a pointer,

For another, it confuses the fsck out of sparse.
Use unsigned long or uintptr_t instead. There are several places misusing
ptrdiff_t; fixed.

Shrink the runtime footprint of various SPI drivers:
- Move the probe() routine into the init section where practical,
using platform_driver_probe() to make that safe. This often saves
around 1KB. Using platform_driver_probe() can also be a correctness
fix, if the probe routine is already marked __init but the driver
struct keeps a dangling pointer to it after init section removal.
- Likewise move remove() routines into the exit sections.
These changes would be inappropriate iff the platform devices were
actually hotpluggable (e.g. they're found on optional addon cards,
or in an FPGA that's dynamically reprogrammed). In these cases,
that's not the situation; it's an SOC controller and the only device
is initialized before these drivers.

This changes the uevent buffer functions to use a struct instead of a
long list of parameters. It does no longer require the caller to do the
proper buffer termination and size accounting, which is currently wrong
in some places. It fixes a known bug where parts of the uevent
environment are overwritten because of wrong index calculations.

error handling.

When the spi_mpc83xx driver receives a tx_buf pointer which is NULL, it
only writes one zero filled word to the transmit register. If the driver
expects to receive more than one word it will wait forever for a second
receive interrupt. With this patch the controller will shift out zeroes
until all words have been received.

Update various SPI drivers so they properly support
- coldplug through "modprobe $(cat /sys/devices/.../modalias)"
- hotplug through "modprobe $(MODALIAS)"
The basic rule for platform, SPI, and (new style) I2C drivers is just
to make sure that modprobing the driver name works. In this case, all
the relevant drivers are platform drivers, and this patch either
(a) Changes the driver name, if no in-tree code would break;
this is simpler and thus preferable in the long term.
(b) Adds MODULE_ALIAS directives, when in-tree platforms declare
devices using the current driver name; less desirable.
Most systems will link SPI controller drivers statically, but
there's no point in being needlessly broken.

Long ago I've noticed (but didn't pay much attention) that
spi_mpc83xx using PM calculations that differs from what
specs describe. I.e.
u8 pm = mpc83xx_spi->spibrg / (spi->max_speed_hz * 4);
While specs says: "The SPI baud rate generator clock source (either
system clock or system clock divided by 16, depending on DIV16 bit) is
divided by 4 * ([PM] + 1), a range from 4 to 64.".
Thus " - 1" is missing in the spi_mpc83xx's formula.
Why nobody noticed that bug? Probably because sysclk usually less then
user expects, e.g. you expect 200 MHz, but real clock is 198 MHz,
and integer rounding helps when this formula is used.
Suppose it's SPI in QE, SYSCLK at 198 MHz, thus SPIBRG at 99MHz, 25 MHz
requested.
PM = (99MHz / ( 25 MHz * 4 )), PM == 0, output SPICLK will be 24.75 MHz
At lower frequencies this bug is more noticeable, though.
And this bug shows itself in all its beauty if SYSCLK is equal or a bit
more than you expect (200 MHz SYSCLK, 100 MHz SPIBRG):
PM = (100MHz / ( 25 MHz * 4 )), PM == 1, output SPICLK will be 12.625 MHz!

For MPC8349E input to the SPI Baud Rate Generator is SYSCLK, but it's
SYSCLK/2 for MPC8323E (SPI in QE). Fix this, and remove confusion by
renaming the mpc83xx_spi->sysclk member as mpc83xx_spi->spibrg.

This updates some error reporting paths in SPI device setup:
- Move validation logic for SPI chipselects to spi_new_device(),
which is where it should always have been.
- In spi_new_device(), emit error messages if the device can't
be created. This is LOTS better than a silent failure; though
eventually, the calling convention should probably change to
use the <linux/err.h> conventions.
- Includes one previously-missing check: SPI masters must always
have at least one chipselect, even for dedicated busses which
always keep it selected!
It also adds a FIXME (IDR for dynamic ID allocation) so the issue doesn't live
purely in my mailbox.

The spidev driver doesn't currently expose all SPI communications modes to
userspace. This passes them all through to the driver.
Two of them are potentially troublesome, in the sense that they could cause
hardware conflicts on shared busses. It might be appropriate to add some
privilege checks for for those modes.

Add OMAP24XX McSPI (Multichannel SPI) controller driver. This driver is
tested very well under OMAP GIT tree with N800 - Nokia Internet Tablet, and
some other OMAP2 boards.
Recent updates included bugfixes, cleanups, speedups, and better
conformance to the current SPI programming interface. This doesn't yet
understand the third controller instance on the OMAP 2430.

Add support for the Infineon TLE62x0 series of low-side driver chips, such
as the TLE6220 or TLE6230. These can be viewed as output GPIOs specialized
for power switching applications. The driver provides a userspace
interface to those GPIOs, and to the switch status they provide.

Tweak Kconfig for the S3C24XX SPI controller drivers. Both use the bitbang
framework; only one previously said that. Plus in this case "select" is
the right way to manage that dependency, since folk will not know up front
to enable bitbang in order to even see those S3C drivers in order to enable
them.

Update chipselect handling for atmel_spi:
* Teach it how to leave chipselect active between messages; this
helps various drivers work better.
* Cope with at91rm0200 errata: nCS0 can't be managed with GPIOs.
The MR.PCS value is now updated whenever a chipselect changes.
(This requires SPI pinmux init for that controller to change,
and also testing on rm9200; doesn't break at91sam9 or avr32.)
* Fix minor glitches: spi_setup() must leave chipselects inactive,
as must removal of the spi_device.
Also tweak diagnostic messaging to be a bit more useful.

The MPC83xx SPI controller clock divider can divide the system clock by not
more then 1024. The spi_mpc83xx driver does not check this and silently
writes garbage to the SPI controller registers when asked to run at lower
frequencies. I've tried to run the SPI on a 266MHz MPC8349E with 100kHz
for debugging a bus problem and suddenly was confronted with a 2nd problem
to debug.. ;-)
The patch adds an additional check which avoids writing garbage to the SPI
controller registers and warn the user about it. This might help others to
avoid simmilar problems.

Minor SPI controller driver updates: make the setup() methods reject
spi->mode bits they don't support, by masking aginst the inverse of bits
they *do* support. This insures against misbehavior later when new mode
bits get added.
Most controllers can't support SPI_LSB_FIRST; more handle SPI_CS_HIGH.
Support for all four SPI clock/transfer modes is routine.

Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either.
What I do:
Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the
.read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes.
In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and
include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work.
But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes
to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods.
I'm not sure if I missed any. :(
Why I do this:
For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the
struct attribute in the .show/.store method,
while we can't do this for the binary attributes.
I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not
so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones.
So I think this patch is reasonable. :)
Who benefits from it:
The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs
requires such an improvement.
All the table binary attributes share the same .read method.
Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get
the table signature and instance number which are used to
distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes.
Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods
for different ACPI table binary attributes.
This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different
platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded.

sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After
deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper,
so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that
often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to
accessing removed modules.
This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with
this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the
backing module from being unloaded.

When either rx_buf or tx_buf is not being used, i.e. for plain read- or
write operations, the atmel_spi uses a fixed-size DMA buffer instead. If
the transfer is longer than the size of this buffer, it is split into
multiple DMA transfers.
When the transfer is split like this, the atmel_spi driver ends up using
the same DMA address again and again even for the buffer that came from the
user, which is of course wrong. Fix this by adding the number of bytes
already transferred to the DMA address so that the data ends up in the
right place.

The omap_uwire controller driver handles SPI_CPHA incorrectly;
It should mean:
CPHA=0 ... sample at leading edge of clock
CPHA=1 ... sample at trailing edge of clock
This bug has been masked by inverse bugs in layered drivers;
and was uncovered by running some of them on non-OMAP hardware.

Now that the cpu_is_xxx() macros are available both on AVR32 and AT91, we can
remove a couple of #ifdefs from this driver. One of them is actually wrong --
new_1 should be set on AVR32 but isn't. This causes the bus clock to run at
twice the speed it is configured to.

Here is a driver for the Alchemy au1550 PSC (Programmable Serial
Controller) in SPI master mode.
It supports dma transfers using the Alchemy descriptor based dma controller
for 4-8 bits per word SPI transfers. For 9-24 bits per word transfers, pio
irq based mode is used to avoid setup of dma channels from scratch on each
number of bits per word change.
Tested with au1550; this may also work on other MIPS Alchemy cpus, like
au1200/au1210/au1250. Used extensively with SD card connected via SPI;
this handles 8.1MHz SPI clock transfers using dma without any problem (the
highest SPI clock freq possible with au1550 running on 324MHz).
The driver supports sharing of SPI bus by multiple devices. All features
of Alchemy SPI mode are supported (all SPI modes, msb/lsb first, bits per
word in 4-24 range).
As the SPI clock of the controller depends on main input clock that shall
be configured externally, platform data structure for au1550 SPI controller
driver contains mainclk_hz attribute to define the input clock rate. From
this value, dividers of the controller for SPI clock are set up for
required frequency.

- spi_butterfly (parent of spi_master, allowing cruft removal)
- lp (creating class_device)
- ppdev (parent of parportN device)
- tipar (creating class_device)
There are still drivers that should be updated, like some of the input
drivers; but they won't be any worse off than they are today.

It turns out that the last patch to change set_cs to be kept in the
controller's structure instead of the platform data was an incomplete
change, and did not change the references to platfrom data in the setup

The set_cs field of struct s3c24xx_spi is declared as returning a int but
the value returned but set_cs is never fixed. Moreover, the default
function for set_cs and the set_cs defintion in the platform data are
returning void.
I'm proposing to change the prototype to void (*set_cs)(...). By doing
this, I'm also fixing 2 build warnings:

It's been pointed out that output GPIOs should have an initial value, to
avoid signal glitching ... among other things, it can be some time before
a driver is ready. This patch corrects that oversight, fixing
- documentation
- platforms supporting the GPIO interface
- users of that call (just one for now, others are pending)
There's only one user of this call for now since most platforms are still
using non-generic GPIO setup code, which in most cases already couples the
initial value with its "set output mode" request.
Note that most platforms are clear about the hardware letting the output
value be set before the pin direction is changed, but the s3c241x docs are
vague on that topic ... so those chips might not avoid the glitches.

Fix a bug in the cleanup of an spi_bitbang bus.
The workqueue associated with the bus was destroyed before the call to
spi_unregister_master. That meant that spi devices on that bus would be
unable to do IO in their remove method. The shutdown flag should have been
able to prevent a segfault, but was never getting set. By waiting to
destroy the workqueue until after the master is unregistered, devices are
able to do IO in their remove methods. An added benefit is that neither
the shutdown flag nor a wait for the queue of messages to empty is needed.

The signature of the per-device cleanup() routine changed to remove its
const-ness. Three new SPI controller drivers now need that change, to
eliminate build warnings.
This also fixes a build bug with atmel_spi on AT91 systems.

Driver for the Atmel on-chip SPI master controller.
Tested primarily on AVR32/AT32AP7000/ATSTK1000 using mtd_dataflash and the
jffs2 filesystem. Should also work fine on various AT91 ARM-based chips
like AT91SAM926x and AT91RM9200.

This is adds a simple SPI EEPROM driver, providing access to the EEPROM
through sysfs much like the I2C "eeprom" driver ... except this driver
supports write access, and multiple EEPROM sizes.

I'd like to assign NULL to kfree()d members of a structure. I can't do
that without ugly casting (see the PXA patch) when the structure pointed to
is const-qualified. I don't really see a reason why the cleanup method
isn't allowed to alter the object it should clean up. :-)
No, I didn't test the PXA patch, but I verified that the NULL-assignment
doesn't stop me from doing rmmod/insmodding my own spi_bitbang-based
driver.

A small bug-fix for spi_bitbang: it must always call the setup_transfer
function via the overridable pointer, not assume that its
spi_bitbang_setup_transfer is sufficient. Otherwise, if all options in the
transfers are default (0), the overrided function will never be called.
Granted, the function replacing it must call spi_bitbang_setup_transfer,
but it might also have other important things to do, even if the second
argument (the spi_transfer) is NULL. Tested together with the other
patches on the spi_crisv32_sser and spi_crisv32_gpio drivers (not yet in
the kernel, will IIUC be submitted as part of the usual
arch-maintainer-pushes).

This is almost the same as the 'BIS' version sent by Andrea, except for
updating the 'DUMMY' byte so that read-only transfers shift out zeroes.
That part of the API changed recently, since some half duplex peripheral
chips require that semantic.

This adds a SPI driver for the Microwire controller on OMAP1 chips. This
driver has been used in the Linux-OMAP tree for some time now, including
with some of those displays using standardized 9-bit commands followed by
data with 8-bit words.
Microwire only supports half duplex transfers, but that's all that most SPI
protocols need. When full duplex, or higher speeds, are needed there are
several other controllers that can be used on OMAP.

If a SPI master device exists, udev (udevtrigger) causes kernel crash, due
to wrong kobj pointer in kobject_uevent_env(). This problem was not in

flush_write_buffer() passes kobject of spi_master_class.subsys to
subsys_addr_store(), then subsys_addr_store() passes a pointer to a struct
subsystem to store_uevent() which expects a pointer to a struct
class_device. The problem seems subsys_attr_store() called instead of
class_device_attr_store().
This mismatch was caused by commit
3bd0f69435, which overrides kset of master
class. This made spi_master_class.subsys.kset.ktype NULL so
subsys_sysfs_ops is used instead of class_dev_sysfs_ops.
The commit was to fix spi_busnum_to_master(). Here is a patch fixes
this function in other way, just searching children list of
class_device.

Currently the spi mode can be set to the wrong mode if you are switching
from any mode other than mode 0. This is because the mode is set using a
bitwise or on uncleared bits. The following patch clears the mode bits
before setting the new mode. I've also modified it to use the appropriate
defines from pxa-regs.h for readability.

It turns out that the spi chipselect was not being passed to the set_cs
routine if one was specified in the platform data.
As part of the fix, change to using a set_cs field in the controller state,
and put a default gpio routine in if the data passed does not specify it.

Some issues were recently turned up with the current specification of what
it means for spi_transfer.tx_buf to be null, as part of transfers which are
(from the SPI protocol driver perspective) pure reads.
Specifically, that it seems better to change the TX behaviour there from
"undefined" to "will shift zeroes". This lets protocol drivers (like the
ads7846 driver) depend on that behavior. It's what most controller drivers
in the tree are already doing (with one exception and one case of driver
wanting-to-oops), it's what Microwire hardware will necessarily be doing,
and it removes an issue whereby certain security audits would need to
define such a value anyway as part of removing covert channels.
This patch changes the specification to require shifting zeroes, and
updates all currently merged SPI controller drivers to do so.

Stabilize PIO mode transfers against a range of word sizes and FIFO
thresholds and fixes word size setup/override issues.
1) 16 and 32 bit DMA/PIO transfers broken due to timing differences.
2) Potential for bad transfer counts due to transfer size assumptions.
3) Setup function broken is multiple ways.
4) Per transfer bit_per_word changes break DMA setup in pump_tranfers.
5) False positive timeout are not errors.
6) Changes in pxa2xx_spi_chip not effective in calls to setup.
7) Timeout scaling wrong for PXA255 NSSP.
8) Driver leaks memory while busy during unloading.
Known issues:
SPI_CS_HIGH and SPI_LSB_FIRST settings in struct spi_device are not handled.
Testing:
This patch has been test against the "random length, random bits/word,
random data (verified on loopback) and stepped baud rate by octaves
(3.6MHz to 115kHz)" test. It is robust in PIO mode, using any
combination of tx and rx thresholds, and also in DMA mode (which
internally computes the thresholds).
Much thanks to Ned Forrester for exhaustive reviews, fixes and testing.
The driver is substantially better for his efforts.

- Eliminate checks for conditions that never occur. These typically
fall into two classes:
1) Checking for 'dev_id == NULL', then it is never called with
NULL as an argument.
2) Checking for invalid irq number, when the only caller (the
system) guarantees the irq handler is called with the proper
'irq' number argument.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

lockdep needs to have the waitqueue lock initialized for on-stack waitqueues
implicitly initialized by DECLARE_COMPLETION(). Annotate on-stack completions
accordingly.

This patch adds earlier initialization of spi_device.mode, as needed
on boards using nondefault chipselect polarity. An example would be
ones using the RS5C348 RTC without an external signal inverter between
the RTC chipselect and the SPI controller.
Without this mechanism, the first setup() call for that chip would
wrongly enable chips, corrupting transfers to/from other chips sharing
that SPI bus.

peripheral clock rates in the PXAxxx family.

pump_transfers tasklet.

This fixes two problems triggered by the MMC stack updating clocks:
- SPI masters driver should accept a max clock speed of zero; that's one
convention for marking idle devices. (Presumably that helps controllers
that don't autogate clocks to "off" when not in use.)
- There are more than 1000 nanoseconds per millisecond; setting the clock
down to 125 KHz now works properly.
Showing once again that Zero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero) is still
an inexhaustible number of bugs.

We need to be able to have a "SPI bus 0" matching chip numbering; but
that number was wrongly used to flag dynamic allocation of a bus number.
This patch resolves that issue; now negative numbers trigger dynamic alloc.
It also updates the how-to-write-a-controller-driver overview to mention
this stuff.

Add spi_device hook for LSB-first word encoding, and update all the
(in-tree) controller drivers to reject such devices. Eventually,
some controller drivers will be updated to support lsb-first encodings
on the wire; no current drivers need this.

This driver turns a PXA2xx synchronous serial port (SSP) into a SPI master
controller (see Documentation/spi/spi_summary). The driver has the following
features:
- Support for any PXA2xx SSP
- SSP PIO and SSP DMA data transfers.
- External and Internal (SSPFRM) chip selects.
- Per slave device (chip) configuration.
- Full suspend, freeze, resume support.

Some protocols (like one for some bitmap displays) require different clock
speed or word size settings for each transfer in an SPI message. This adds
those parameters to struct spi_transfer. They are to be used when they are
nonzero; otherwise the defaults from spi_device are to be used.
The patch also adds a setup_transfer callback to spi_bitbang, uses it for
messages that use those overrides, and implements it so that the pure
bitbanging code can help resolve any questions about how it should work.

This resolves some minor version skew glitches that accumulated for the AVR
Butterfly adapter driver, which caused among other things the existence of
a duplicate Kconfig entry. Most of it boils down to comment updates, but in
one case it removes some now-superfluous code that would be better if not
copied into other controller-level drivers.

This adds a bitbanging spi master, hooking up to board/adapter-specific glue
code which knows how to set and read the signals (gpios etc).
This code kicks in after the glue code creates a platform_device with the
right platform_data. That data includes I/O loops, which will usually
come from expanding an inline function (provided in the header). One goal
is that the I/O loops should be easily optimized down to a few GPIO register
accesses, in common cases, for speed and minimized overhead.
This understands all the currently defined protocol tweaking options in the
SPI framework, and might eventually serve as as reference implementation.
- different word sizes (1..32 bits)
- differing clock rates
- SPI modes differing by CPOL (affecting chip select and I/O loops)
- SPI modes differing by CPHA (affecting I/O loops)
- delays (usecs) after transfers
- temporarily deselecting chips in mid-transfer
A lot of hardware could work with this framework, though common types of
controller can't reach peak performance without switching to a driver
structure that supports pipelining of transfers (e.g. DMA queues) and maybe
controllers (e.g. IRQ driven).

This includes various updates to the SPI core:
- Fixes a driver model refcount bug in spi_unregister_master() paths.
- The spi_master structures now have wrappers which help keep drivers
from needing class-level get/put for device data or for refcounts.
- Check for a few setup errors that would cause oopsing later.
- Docs say more about memory management. Highlights the use of DMA-safe
i/o buffers, and zero-initializing spi_message and such metadata.
- Provide a simple alloc/free for spi_message and its spi_transfer;
this is only one of the possible memory management policies.
Nothing to break code that already works.

This is a refresh of the "Simple SPI Framework" found in 2.6.15-rc3-mm1
which makes the following changes:
* There's now a "struct spi_driver". This increase the footprint
of the core a bit, since it now includes code to do what the driver
core was previously handling directly. Documentation and comments
were updated to match.
* spi_alloc_master() now does class_device_initialize(), so it can
at least be refcounted before spi_register_master(). To match,
spi_register_master() switched over to class_device_add().
* States explicitly that after transfer errors, spi_devices will be
deselected. We want fault recovery procedures to work the same
for all controller drivers.
* Minor tweaks: controller_data no longer points to readonly data;
prevent some potential cast-from-null bugs with container_of calls;
clarifies some existing kerneldoc,
And a few small cleanups.

This is the core of a small SPI framework, implementing the model of a
queue of messages which complete asynchronously (with thin synchronous
wrappers on top).
- It's still less than 2KB of ".text" (ARM). If there's got to be a
mid-layer for something so simple, that's the right size budget. :)
- The guts use board-specific SPI device tables to build the driver
model tree. (Hardware probing is rarely an option.)
- This version of Kconfig includes no drivers. At this writing there
are two known master controller drivers (PXA/SSP, OMAP MicroWire)
and three protocol drivers (CS8415a, ADS7846, DataFlash) with LKML
mentions of other drivers in development.
- No userspace API. There are several implementations to compare.
Implement them like any other driver, and bind them with sysfs.
The changes from last version posted to LKML (on 11-Nov-2005) are minor,
and include:
- One bugfix (removes a FIXME), with the visible effect of making device
names be "spiB.C" where B is the bus number and C is the chipselect.
- The "caller provides DMA mappings" mechanism now has kerneldoc, for
DMA drivers that want to be fancy.
- Hey, the framework init can be subsys_init. Even though board init
logic fires earlier, at arch_init ... since the framework init is
for driver support, and the board init support uses static init.
- Various additional spec/doc clarifications based on discussions
with other folk. It adds a brief "thank you" at the end, for folk
who've helped nudge this framework into existence.
As I've said before, I think that "protocol tweaking" is the main support
that this driver framework will need to evolve.

Update the SPI framework to remove a potential priority inversion case by
reverting to kmalloc if the pre-allocated DMA-safe buffer isn't available.
