Commit c49436b657 (serial: 8250_dw: Improve unwritable LCR workaround)
caused a regression. It added a check that the LCR was written properly
to detect and workaround the busy quirk, but the behaviour of bit 5
(UART_LCR_SPAR) differs between IP versions 3.00a and 3.14c per the
docs. On older versions this caused the check to fail and it would
repeatedly force idle and rewrite the LCR register, causing delays and
preventing any input from serial being received.
This is fixed by masking out UART_LCR_SPAR before making the comparison.

When a controlling tty is being hung up and the hang up is
waiting for a just-signalled tty reader or writer to exit, and a new tty
reader/writer tries to acquire an ldisc reference concurrently with the
ldisc reference release from the signalled reader/writer, the hangup
can hang. The new reader/writer is sleeping in ldsem_down_read() and the
hangup is sleeping in ldsem_down_write() [1].
The new reader/writer fails to wakeup the waiting hangup because the
wrong lock count value is checked (the old lock count rather than the new
lock count) to see if the lock is unowned.
Change helper function to return the new lock count if the cmpxchg was
successful; document this behavior.

The break timer accesses hardware registers and thus requires the port
to be enabled. It currently ensures this by enabling the port at the
beginning of the timer handler, and disabling it at the end. However,
the enable/disable operations call the runtime PM sync functions, which
are not allowed in atomic context. The current situation is thus broken.
This change relies on non-atomic code to enable/disable the port. The
break timer will only be started from the IRQ handler, which already
runs with the port enabled. We just need to ensure that the port won't
be disabled with the timer running, and that's easily done by just
cancelling the timer in the port disable function.

Commit 60e9357547 (serial: samsung: enable clock before clearing pending
interrupts during init) added handling of the controller clock during init.
On most systems this clock is also one of the baud_clock sources and
possibly used by the earlycon and thus already enabled by the bootloader.
Therefore a gap exists between s3c24xx_serial_init_port disabling the
clock and an attached console reenabling it, making the transition from
earlycon to regular console possibly hang the system - as seen on my
S3C2442 based Freerunner today.
Therefore move the disabling of the clock from s3c24xx_serial_init_port
below the uart port registration, effectively creating an overlap and
keeping the clock running non-stop if the console wants to grab this port.

ttyA has ld associated to n_gsm, when ttyA is closing, it triggers
to release gsmttyB's ld data dlci[B], then race would happen if gsmttyB
is opening in parallel.
(Note: This patch set differs from previous set in that it uses mutex
instead of spin lock to avoid race, so that it avoids sleeping in automic
context)
Here are race cases we found recently in test:
CASE #1
====================================================================
releasing dlci[B] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic
in gsmtty_open(gsmttyB), as below:
tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB)

----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B]
tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) -----

gsm_dlci_release(dlci[B]) -----

gsm_dlci_free(dlci[B]) -----

----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB)
gsmtty_open()
{
struct gsm_dlci *dlci = tty->driver_data; => here it uses dlci[B]
...
}
In gsmtty_open(gsmttyA), it uses dlci[B] which was release, so hit a panic.
=====================================================================
CASE #2
=====================================================================
releasing dlci[0] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic
in gsmtty_open(), as below:
tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB)

----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B]

----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB) fail

----- tty_release(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_close(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B])

----- dlci_put(dlci[B])

tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) -----

gsm_dlci_release(dlci[0]) -----

gsm_dlci_free(dlci[0]) -----

----- dlci_put(dlci[0])
In gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B]), it tries to use dlci[0] which was released,
then hit panic.
=====================================================================
IMHO, n_gsm tty operations would refer released ldisc, as long as
gsm_dlci_release() has chance to release ldisc data when some gsmtty operations
are ongoing..
This patch is try to avoid it by:
1) in n_gsm driver, use a global gsm mutex lock to avoid gsm_dlci_release() run in
parallel with gsmtty_install();
2) Increase dlci's ref count in gsmtty_install() instead of in gsmtty_open(), the
purpose is to prevent gsm_dlci_release() releasing dlci after gsmtty_install()
allocats dlci but before gsmtty_open increases dlci's ref count;
3) Decrease dlci's ref count in gsmtty_remove(), a tty framework API, this is the
opposite process of step 2).

The uart_set_options() code unconditionally initalizes the spinlock
on the port. This can cause a deadlock in some situations.
One instance that exposed the problem, was when writing to

is already running on ttyS0. If the spinlock is re-initialized
while the lock is held due to output to the console, there
is a deadlock.

Reset the TTY_HUPPED state after the driver has successfully

to release gsmttyB's ld data dlci[B], then race would happen if gsmttyB
is opening in parallel.
Here are race cases we found recently in test:
CASE #1
====================================================================
releasing dlci[B] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic
in gsmtty_open(gsmttyB), as below:
tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB)

----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B]
tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) -----

gsm_dlci_release(dlci[B]) -----

gsm_dlci_free(dlci[B]) -----

----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB)
gsmtty_open()
{
struct gsm_dlci *dlci = tty->driver_data; => here it uses dlci[B]
...
}
In gsmtty_open(gsmttyA), it uses dlci[B] which was release, so hit a panic.
=====================================================================
CASE #2
=====================================================================
releasing dlci[0] race with gsmtty_install(gsmttyB), then panic
in gsmtty_open(), as below:
tty_release(ttyA) tty_open(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_install(gsmttyB)

----- gsm_dlci_alloc(gsmttyB) => alloc dlci[B]

----- gsmtty_open(gsmttyB) fail

----- tty_release(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_close(gsmttyB)

----- gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B])

----- dlci_put(dlci[B])

tty_ldisc_release(ttyA) -----

gsm_dlci_release(dlci[0]) -----

gsm_dlci_free(dlci[0]) -----

----- dlci_put(dlci[0])
In gsmtty_detach_dlci(dlci[B]), it tries to use dlci[0] which was released,
then hit panic.
=====================================================================
IMHO, n_gsm tty operations would refer released ldisc, as long as
gsm_dlci_release() has chance to release ldisc data when some gsmtty operations
are not completed..
This patch is try to avoid it by:
1) in n_gsm driver, use a global gsm spin lock to avoid gsm_dlci_release() run in
parallel with gsmtty_install();
2) Increase dlci's ref count in gsmtty_install() instead of in gsmtty_open(), the
purpose is to prevent gsm_dlci_release() releasing dlci after gsmtty_install()
allocats dlci but before gsmtty_open increases dlci's ref count;
3) Decrease dlci's ref count in gsmtty_remove(), which is a tty framework api, and
this is the opposite process of step 2).

Although the maximum allowable canonical line is specified to
be 255 bytes (MAX_CANON), the practical limit has actually been
the size of the line discipline read buffer (N_TTY_BUF_SIZE == 4096).
Commit 32f13521ca,
n_tty: Line copy to user buffer in canonical mode, limited the
line copy to 4095 bytes. With a completely full line discipline
read buffer and a userspace buffer > 4095, _no_ data was copied,
and the read() syscall returned 0, indicating EOF.
Fix the interval arithmetic to compute the correct number of bytes
to copy to userspace in the range [1..4096].

Commit cbfd0340ae,
'n_tty: Process echoes in blocks', introduced an error when
consuming the echo buffer tail to prevent buffer overrun, where
the incorrect operation code byte is checked to determine how
far to advance the tail to the next echo byte.
Check the correct byte for the echo operation code byte.

A departing reader must restart a flush_to_ldisc() worker _before_
the next reader enters the read loop; this is to avoid the new reader
concluding no more i/o is available and prematurely exiting, when the
old reader simply hasn't re-started the worker yet.

"This has tons of fixes and two major features which are concentrated
around the Xen SWIOTLB library.
The short <blurb> is that the tracing facility (just one function) has
been added to SWIOTLB to make it easier to track I/O progress.
Additionally under Xen and ARM (32 & 64) the Xen-SWIOTLB driver
"is used to translate physical to machine and machine to physical
addresses of foreign[guest] pages for DMA operations" (Stefano) when
booting under hardware without proper IOMMU.
There are also bug-fixes, cleanups, compile warning fixes, etc.
The commit times for some of the commits is a bit fresh - that is b/c
we wanted to make sure we have the Ack's from the ARM folks - which

that stays enabled when the device hits off-idle and the
regular interrupt controller is powered off.
Let's add support for the optional second interrupt for
wake-up events. And then serial-omap can manage the
wake-up interrupt from it's runtime PM calls to avoid
spurious interrupts during runtime.
Note that the wake interrupt is board specific as it
uses the UART RX pin, and for omap3, there are six pin
options for UART3 RX pin.
Also Note that the legacy platform based booting handles
the wake-ups in the legacy mux driver and does not need to
pass the wake-up interrupt to the driver.
And finally, to pass the wake-up interrupt in the dts file,
either interrupt-map or the pending interrupts-extended
property needs to be passed. It's probably best to use
interrupts-extended when it's available.

The current driver does not implement the flush_buffer hook for
uart_ops. When we enable the DMA for the driver, and test it with Bluetooth,
we may meet the following bug for TX:
[1] User application may call the flush operation at any time.
The uart_flush_buffer() calls the uart_circ_clear() to set
the xmit->head and xmit->tail with 0.
[2] The TX DMA callback can be called at any time too.
The dma_tx_call() will update the xmit->tail.

When configured with UART_16550_COMPATIBLE=NO or in versions prior to
the introduction of this option, the Designware UART will ignore writes
to the LCR if the UART is busy. The current workaround saves a copy of
the last written LCR and re-writes it in the ISR for a special interrupt
that is raised when a write was ignored.
Unfortunately, interrupts are typically disabled prior to performing a
sequence of register writes that include the LCR so the point at which
the retry occurs is too late. An example is serial8250_do_set_termios()
where an ignored LCR write results in the baud divisor not being set and
instead a garbage character is sent out the transmitter.
Furthermore, since serial_port_out() offers no way to indicate failure,
a serious effort must be made to ensure that the LCR is actually updated
before returning back to the caller. This is difficult, however, as a
UART that was busy during the first attempt is likely to still be busy
when a subsequent attempt is made unless some extra action is taken.
This updated workaround reads back the LCR after each write to confirm
that the new value was accepted by the hardware. Should the hardware
ignore a write, the TX/RX FIFOs are cleared and the receive buffer read
before attempting to rewrite the LCR out of the hope that doing so will
force the UART into an idle state. While this may seem unnecessarily
aggressive, writes to the LCR are used to change the baud rate, parity,
stop bit, or data length so the data that may be lost is likely not
important. Admittedly, this is far from ideal but it seems to be the
best that can be done given the hardware limitations.
Lastly, the revised workaround doesn't touch the LCR in the ISR, so it
avoids the possibility of a "serial8250: too much work for irq" lock up.
This problem is rare in real situations but can be reproduced easily by
wiring up two UARTs and running the following commands.
# stty -F /dev/ttyS1 echo
# stty -F /dev/ttyS2 echo
# cat /dev/ttyS1 &

# echo asdf > /dev/ttyS1

Commit f95499c303,
n_tty: Don't wait for buffer work in read() loop
creates a race window which can cause a pty master read()
to miss the last pty slave write(s) and return -EIO instead,
thus signalling the pty slave is closed. This can happen when
the pty slave is written and immediately closed but before the
tty buffer i/o loop receives the new input; the pty master
read() is scheduled, sees its read buffer is empty and the
pty slave has been closed, and exits.
Because tty_flush_to_ldisc() has significant performance impact
for parallel i/o, rather than revert the commit, special case this
condition (ie., when the read buffer is empty and the 'other' pty
has been closed) and, only then, wait for buffer work to complete
before re-testing if the read buffer is still empty.
As before, subsequent pty master reads return any available data
until no more data is available, and then returns -EIO to
indicate the pty slave has closed.

The xen_raw_printk works great for debugging purposes. We use
for PV guests and we can also use it for HVM guests.
However, for HVM guests we have a fallback of using the 0xe9
port in case the hypervisor does not support an HVM guest of
using the console_io hypercall. As such lets use 0xe9 during
early bootup, and once the hyper-page is setup and if the
console_io hypercall is supported - use that. Otherwise we
will fallback to using the 0xe9 after early bootup.
We also alter the return value for dom0_write_console to return
an error value instead of zero. The HVC API has been supporting
returning error values for quite some time.
P.S.
To use (and to see the output in the Xen ring buffer) one has to build
the hypervisor with 'debug=y'.

all popular terminals supporting these codes, people consider this to

Enabling the ARM DCC console and using without a JTAG connection will
simply hang the system. Since distros like to turn on all options, this
is a reoccurring problem to debug. We can do better by checking if
anything is attached and handling characters. There is no way to probe
this, so send a newline and check that it is handled.

tty: Fix recursive deadlock in tty_perform_flush()

invoked from the line discipline.

Starting from v3.10 (probably commit f91e259041: "tty: Signal
foreground group processes in hangup") disassociate_ctty() sends SIGCONT
if tty && on_exit. This breaks LSB test-suite, in particular test8 in
_exit.c and test40 in sigcon5.c.
Put the "!on_exit" check back to restore the old behaviour.
Review by Peter Hurley:
"Yes, this regression was introduced by me in that commit. The effect
of the regression is that ptys will receive a SIGCONT when, in similar
circumstances, ttys would not.
The fact that two test vectors accidentally tripped over this
regression suggests that some other apps may as well.
Thanks for catching this"

Add a new ar933x_uart_console_enabled() helper function
which uses the config_enable(CONFIG_SERIAL_AR933X_CONSOLE)
macro to decide if the console support is enabled or not.
Remove the 'ifdef CONFIG_SERIAL_AR933X_CONSOLE' statements
and use the new helper function to conditionally enable
console support instead.
If CONFIG_SERIAL_AR933X_CONSOLE is not enabled, the new
helper function will become a null stub which allows the
compiler to optimize out the unused console specific
functions/variables.

The AR933x UARTs are only used on the Atheros AR933x
SoCs. The base clock frequency of the UART is passed
to the driver via platform data. The SoC support code
implements the generic clock API, and the clock rate
can be retrieved via that.
Update the code to get the clock rate via the generic
clock API instead of using the platform data.

cpm_uart serial driver uses GPIO for control signals. In order to be used
properly, GPIOs have to be reserved. Comment in gpiolib.c considers illegal
the use of GPIOs without requesting them. In addition, the direction of the
GPIO has to be set properly.

possible to overflow but let's check before using the array index.

In downstream kernel we've standardized the clock consumer names
that MSM device drivers use. Replace the uart specific clock
names in this driver with the more standard 'core' and 'iface'
names. Also simplify the code by assuming that clk_prepare_enable
and clk_disable_unprepare() will properly check for NULL pointers
(it will because MSM uses the common clock framework).
