Driver Core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1
Here is the "big" driver core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1 It's a lot of different patches, all across the tree due to some api changes and lots of debugfs cleanups. Because of this, there is going to be some merge issues with your tree at the moment, I'll follow up with the expected resolutions to make it easier for you. Other than the debugfs cleanups, in this set of changes we have: - bus iteration function cleanups (will cause build warnings with s390 and coresight drivers in your tree) - scripts/get_abi.pl tool to display and parse Documentation/ABI entries in a simple way - cleanups to Documenatation/ABI/ entries to make them parse easier due to typos and other minor things - default_attrs use for some ktype users - driver model documentation file conversions to .rst - compressed firmware file loading - deferred probe fixes All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with a bunch of merge issues that Stephen has been patient with me for. Other than the merge issues, functionality is working properly in linux-next :) Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iG0EABECAC0WIQT0tgzFv3jCIUoxPcsxR9QN2y37KQUCXSgpnQ8cZ3JlZ0Brcm9h aC5jb20ACgkQMUfUDdst+ykcwgCfS30OR4JmwZydWGJ7zK/cHqk+KjsAnjOxjC1K LpRyb3zX29oChFaZkc5a =XrEZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'driver-core-5.3-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/driver-core Pull driver core and debugfs updates from Greg KH: "Here is the "big" driver core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1 It's a lot of different patches, all across the tree due to some api changes and lots of debugfs cleanups. Char / Misc driver patches for 5.3-rc1
Here is the "large" pull request for char and misc and other assorted smaller driver subsystems for 5.3-rc1. It seems that this tree is becoming the funnel point of lots of smaller driver subsystems, which is fine for me, but that's why it is getting larger over time and does not just contain stuff under drivers/char/ and drivers/misc. Lots of small updates all over the place here from different driver subsystems: - habana driver updates - coresight driver updates - documentation file movements and updates - Android binder fixes and updates - extcon driver updates - google firmware driver updates - fsi driver updates - smaller misc and char driver updates - soundwire driver updates - nvmem driver updates - w1 driver fixes All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. It's been a relatively busy cycle for docs:
- A fair pile of RST conversions, many from Mauro. These create more than the usual number of simple but annoying merge conflicts with other trees, unfortunately. He has a lot more of these waiting on the wings that, I think, will go to you directly later on. - A new document on how to use merges and rebases in kernel repos, and one on Spectre vulnerabilities. - Various improvements to the build system, including automatic markup of function() references because some people, for reasons I will never understand, were of the opinion that :c:func:``function()`` is unattractive and not fun to type. - We now recommend using sphinx 1.7, but still support back to 1.4. - Lots of smaller improvements, warning fixes, typo fixes, etc. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQFDBAABCAAtFiEEIw+MvkEiF49krdp9F0NaE2wMflgFAl0krAEPHGNvcmJldEBs d24ubmV0AAoJEBdDWhNsDH5Yg98H/AuLqO9LpOgUjF4LhyjxGPdzJkY9RExSJ7km gznyreLCZgFaJR+AY6YDsd4Jw6OJlPbu1YM/Qo3C3WrZVFVhgL/s2ebvBgCo50A8 raAFd8jTf4/mGCHnAqRotAPQ3mETJUk315B66lBJ6Oc+YdpRhwXWq8ZW2bJxInFF 3HDvoFgMf0KhLuMHUkkL0u3fxH1iA+KvDu8diPbJYFjOdOWENz/CV8wqdVkXRSEW DJxIq89h/7d+hIG3d1I7Nw+gibGsAdjSjKv4eRKauZs4Aoxd1Gpl62z0JNk6aT3m dtq4joLdwScydonXROD/Twn2jsu4xYTrPwVzChomElMowW/ZBBY= =D0eO -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'docs-5.3' of git://git.lwn.net/linux Pull Documentation updates from Jonathan Corbet: "It's been a relatively busy cycle for docs: - A fair pile of RST conversions, many from Mauro. Bulk GPIO changes for the v5.3 kernel cycle:
Core: - When a gpio_chip request GPIOs from itself, it can now fully control the line characteristics, both machine and consumer flags. This makes a lot of sense, but took some time before I figured out that this is how it has to work. - Several smallish documentation fixes. New drivers: - The PCA953x driver now supports the TI TCA9539. - The DaVinci driver now supports the K3 AM654 SoCs. Driver improvements: - Major overhaul and hardening of the OMAP driver by Russell King. - Starting to move some drivers to the new API passing irq_chip along with the gpio_chip when adding the gpio_chip instead of adding it separately. Unrelated: - Delete the FMC subsystem. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEElDRnuGcz/wPCXQWMQRCzN7AZXXMFAl0i7gEACgkQQRCzN7AZ XXOeUA/+JKyI2zebTWBcgtxhn6VQCufMCtFmQl2JkEcy4pT7aBJcGWqFQCBW2Szf VTtqc8nNa90SZoOzsNbkeQgRjNKGZruMbh0ARUPcW4v3ZJHtUNUEDLTo8c3iyTgS 9k/FTeaTLt4WSZujeAO0O7G4KNnOOlTKLh58dr0PmXUR+0v+fbMhcJqJ9ABueV+V qENdpkTuG1ZcvzgLhBBEXdt3Plw9ICLWmPXtwY+784ewucVPbyQX7jV4+bBZ25fL DerCuMIgL5vRWWdiFO6/Jp603rHzZpTnjLJJocXUFiD6zA5rvU2jTWxsnUttjisg 8cTLMyQspsDvBxhEhCJVTuIKotbKH900TSaz+vx20W72/A1euy4y6uVi8FGZo4Ww KDkzB7anwHyEFKGnlYgHzDrfctgZrhQoyFz808DQRYg1JseZB5oGVDvScrPBD43j nbNDd8gwG4yp3tFnDx9xjIwQy3Ax4d510rAZyUN2801IlbA1bueq4t6Z2cCucWzX XA1gCKlXe4BUeitRAoZtqZNZG1ymEysW4jXy1V8xrwtAf8+QSN+xO98akz3VpnQL ae9q+HtF76fDBY1xFSXT37Ma3+4OR2vMF9QWuo4TCb9j1cL7llf8ZxtUq9LEHbDu erKLSSnwSFmqJNGSEA5SulGOCR/tRPkClngE9x0XEM6gOD+bs6E= =8zSV -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'gpio-v5.3-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the big slew of GPIO changes for the v5.3 kernel cycle. This is mostly incremental work this time. Three important things: - The FMC subsystem is deleted through my tree. This happens through GPIO as its demise was discussed in relation to a patch decoupling its GPIO implementation from the standard way of handling GPIO. As it turns out, that is not the only subsystem it reimplements and the authors think it is better do scratch it and start over using the proper kernel subsystems than try to polish the rust shiny. See the commit (ACKed by the maintainers) for details. - Arnd made a small devres patch that was ACKed by Greg and goes into the device core. - SPDX header change colissions may happen, because at times I've seen that quite a lot changed during the -rc:s in regards to SPDX. (It is good stuff, tglx has me convinced, and it is worth the occasional pain.) Apart from this is is nothing controversial or problematic. s390 updates for the 5.3 merge window
- Improve stop_machine wait logic: replace cpu_relax_yield call in generic stop_machine function with a weak stop_machine_yield function. This is overridden on s390, which yields the current cpu to the neighbouring cpu after a couple of retries, instead of blindly giving up the cpu to the hipervisor. This significantly improves stop_machine performance on s390 in overcommitted scenarios. This includes common code changes which have been Acked by Peter Zijlstra and Thomas Gleixner. - Improve jump label transformation speed: transform jump labels without using stop_machine. - Refactoring of the vfio-ccw cp handling, simplifying the code and avoiding unneeded allocating/copying. - Various vfio-ccw fixes (ccw translation, state machine). - Add support for vfio-ap queue interrupt control in the guest. This includes s390 kvm changes which have been Acked by Christian Borntraeger. - Add protected virtualization support for virtio-ccw. - Enforce both CONFIG_SMP and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU, which allows to remove some code which most likely isn't working at all, besides that s390 didn't even compile for !CONFIG_SMP. - Support for special flagged EP11 CPRBs for zcrypt. - Handle PCI devices with no support for new MIO instructions. - Avoid KASAN false positives in reworked stack unwinder. - Couple of fixes for the QDIO layer. - Convert s390 specific documentation to ReST format. - Let s390 crypto modules return -ENODEV instead of -EOPNOTSUPP if hardware is missing. This way our modules behave like most other modules and which is also what systemd's systemd-modules-load.service expects. - Replace defconfig with performance_defconfig, so there is one config file less to maintain. - Remove the SCLP call home device driver, which was never useful. - Cleanups all over the place. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEzBAABCAAdFiEE3QHqV+H2a8xAv27vjYWKoQLXFBgFAl0iEpcACgkQjYWKoQLX FBgtZwf8DOJ6COUG91jKP0RSDlc2YvIMBxopQ38ql1lIsTj5t6DvJ2z3X5uct1wy 6mMiF01VuyD4V4UXbTJQrihzNx7D4dUh47s2sS+diGHxJyXacVxlmjS5k+6pLIUO AyLvtCcoqDPPiThqnSTZFRm/TcfO/25fCG/IdjrFGj1MD09wHpUCh16tmRPTGFlC BWZeilDT77fVXnh7Ggn3JB0mQay5PAw2ODOxELHTUBaLmYF8RJPPVKBPmXGl9P1W 84ESm2p+iALGGWDiTOUad9eu8wyQci/V/R+hFgs0Bz/HRcjznNH5EVvfQNCD4VNF g/PET10nIQYZv2BNdi0cwRjR9jCFbw== =jp0i -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 's390-5.3-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/s390/linux Pull s390 updates from Vasily Gorbik: - Improve stop_machine wait logic: replace cpu_relax_yield call in generic stop_machine function with a weak stop_machine_yield function. docs: driver-model: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rst
Convert the various documents at the driver-model, preparing them to be part of the driver-api book. The conversion is actually: - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs; - fix tables markups; - add some lists markups; - mark literal blocks; - adjust title markups. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. docs: pps.txt: convert to ReST and rename to pps.rst
This file is already in a good shape: just its title and adding some literal block markups is needed for it to be part of the document. While it has a small chapter with sysfs stuff, most of the document is focused on driver development. As it describes a kernel API, move it to the driver-api directory. In order to avoid conflicts, let's add an :orphan: tag to it, to be removed when added to the driver-api book. This is the bulk of the GPIO changes for the v5.2 kernel cycle:
Core changes: - The gpiolib MMIO driver has been enhanced to handle two direction registers, i.e. one register to set lines as input and one register to set lines as output. It turns out some silicon engineer thinks the ability to configure a line as input and output at the same time makes sense, this can be debated but includes a lot of analog electronics reasoning, and the registers are there and need to be handled consistently. Unsurprisingly, we enforce the lines to be either inputs or outputs in such schemes. - Send in the proper argument value to .set_config() dispatched to the pin control subsystem. Nobody used it before, now someone does, so fix it to work as expected. - The ACPI gpiolib portions can now handle pin bias setting (pull up or pull down). This has been in the ACPI spec for years and we finally have it properly integrated with Linux GPIOs. It was based on an observation from Andy Schevchenko that Thomas Petazzoni's changes to the core for biasing the PCA950x GPIO expander actually happen to fit hand-in-glove with what the ACPI core needed. Such nice synergies happen sometimes. New drivers: - A new driver for the Mellanox BlueField GPIO controller. This is using 64bit MMIO registers and can configure lines as inputs and outputs at the same time and after improving the MMIO library we handle it just fine. Interesting. - A new IXP4xx proper gpiochip driver with hierarchical interrupts should be coming in from the ARM SoC tree as well. Driver enhancements: - The PCA053x driver handles the CAT9554 GPIO expander. - The PCA053x driver handles the NXP PCAL6416 GPIO expander. - Wake-up support on PCA053x GPIO lines. - OMAP now does a nice asynchronous IRQ handling on wake-ups by letting everything wake up on edges, and this makes runtime PM work as expected too. Misc: - Several cleanups such as devres fixes. - Get rid of some languager comstructs that cause problems when compiling with LLVMs clang. - Documentation review and update. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIcBAABAgAGBQJc1olZAAoJEEEQszewGV1zEU4P/RmTf3hG8xmNPS3MDTmR6gAy /YJOXjXBf3CD/dmEAyyaNLnUQismrtRNvHSoEGbno7gkU+htzp9UfUJkj6+HIXs2 RpF+Hi78HzZNDxGWuBLu6OZolpmBtx+sRKOhHk/XfNS45qd1FgXWDuulzsYa9Xsr hYMXdtdv9wY/vcc68q1rtKAbzlu5ZNCa3Zj1iNOr/XQt3Nl2BW66hGLgjK4mOvgx fJy4rFXuDIMfDvo69U1Opz2b39sfE7XMhfZS/MOgg4yEV9zGRgDoI1tyMcTqGb8Q 8LQbp5dXkP+3dJQB8tgbu3Vk4WC1Rd/pmIli5sMgsk0HYQ6XegfT6HJKozSmwN9r 0s8jKlrocWZvdPo1aJwQgtRS56t2rFWcrcRye8bLqxkkW5cYIq9CwkE8USwB31Kv PFpoOwRuCtj0gkCxf7WIEcC5NAkYPow3K1KPdk3E0Si6I3pj0NqqlaAD0JAlkC2V aPq3xbTuFCAdmcADEt2Z+dUJ7WIs5Y9oQgosMAx+A2AD4K3QDBMu3pZsT6SCu4XZ mK0eWJi9/CvOj/s7bA0BEJVxQA+p8KYsNRBOULg/8aAOqGcLnSydQjqrxDTE8YrL xmmRG7i7ht0B9CchZuIB5hqdvjbCgvcVa5OnCUDfLxE0GdCx8iJ9y9OrsMXbabYq 8FcPDo1N38cTYLnLqvKI =rhto -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'gpio-v5.2-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull gpio updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of the GPIO changes for the v5.2 kernel cycle. Since ARM has never been open source friendly on the GPU side of the house, the community has had to create open source drivers for the Mali GPUs. Lima covers the older t4xx and panfrost the newer 6xx/7xx series. Well done to all involved and hopefully this will help ARM head in the right direction. Staging / IIO driver patches for 5.2-rc1
Here is the big staging and iio driver update for 5.2-rc1. Lots of tiny fixes all over the staging and IIO driver trees here, along with some new IIO drivers. Also we ended up deleting two drivers, making this pull request remove a few hundred thousand lines of code, always a nice thing to see. Both of the drivers removed have been replaced with "real" drivers in their various subsystem directories, and they will be coming to you from those locations during this merge window. There are some core vt/selection changes in here, that was due to some cleanups needed for the speakup fixes. Those have all been acked by the various subsystem maintainers (i.e. me), so those are ok. We also added a few new drivers, for some odd hardware, giving new developers plenty to work on with basic coding style cleanups to come in the near future. Other than that, nothing unusual here. All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues, other than an odd gcc warning for one of the new drivers that should be fixed up soon. USB: core: Fix bug caused by duplicate interface PM usage counter
The syzkaller fuzzer reported a bug in the USB hub driver which turned out to be caused by a negative runtime-PM usage counter. This allowed a hub to be runtime suspended at a time when the driver did not expect it. The symptom is a WARNING issued because the hub's status URB is submitted while it is already active: URB 0000000031fb463e submitted while active WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 2917 at drivers/usb/core/urb.c:363 The negative runtime-PM usage count was caused by an unfortunate design decision made when runtime PM was first implemented for USB. At that time, USB class drivers were allowed to unbind from their interfaces without balancing the usage counter (i.e., leaving it with a positive count). The core code would take care of setting the counter back to 0 before allowing another driver to bind to the interface. Later on when runtime PM was implemented for the entire kernel, the opposite decision was made: Drivers were required to balance their runtime-PM get and put calls. In order to maintain backward compatibility, however, the USB subsystem adapted to the new implementation by keeping an independent usage counter for each interface and using it to automatically adjust the normal usage counter back to 0 whenever a driver was unbound. This approach involves duplicating information, but what is worse, it doesn't work properly in cases where a USB class driver delays decrementing the usage counter until after the driver's disconnect() routine has returned and the counter has been adjusted back to 0. Doing so would cause the usage counter to become negative. There's even a warning about this in the USB power management documentation! As it happens, this is exactly what the hub driver does. The kick_hub_wq() routine increments the runtime-PM usage counter, and the corresponding decrement is carried out by hub_event() in the context of the hub_wq work-queue thread. This work routine may sometimes run after the driver has been unbound from its interface, and when it does it causes the usage counter to go negative. It is not possible for hub_disconnect() to wait for a pending hub_event() call to finish, because hub_disconnect() is called with the device lock held and hub_event() acquires that lock. The only feasible fix is to reverse the original design decision: remove the duplicate interface-specific usage counter and require USB drivers to balance their runtime PM gets and puts. As far as I know, all existing drivers currently do this.
