3d3c8b5222 xfs: refactor xfs_trans_reserve() interface
With the new xfs_trans_res structure has been introduced, the log
reservation size, log count as well as log flags are pre-initialized
at mount time.  So it's time to refine xfs_trans_reserve() interface
to be more neat.

Also, introduce a new helper M_RES() to return a pointer to the
mp->m_resv structure to simplify the input.

74137fff06 xfs: add fsgeom flag for v5 superblock support.
Currently userspace has no way of determining that a filesystem is
CRC enabled. Add a flag to the XFS_IOC_FSGEOMETRY ioctl output to
indicate that the filesystem has v5 superblock support enabled.
This will allow xfs_info to correctly report the state of the
filesystem.

77c95bba01 xfs: add CRC checks to the AGFL
Add CRC checks, location information and a magic number to the AGFL.
Previously the AGFL was just a block containing nothing but the
free block pointers.  The new AGFL has a real header with the usual
boilerplate instead, so that we can verify it's not corrupted and
written into the right place.

[dchinner@redhat.com] Added LSN field, reworked significantly to fit
into new verifier structure and growfs structure, enabled full
verifier functionality now there is a header to verify and we can
guarantee an initialised AGFL.

4e0e6040c4 xfs: add CRC checks to the AGF
The AGF already has some self identifying fields (e.g. the sequence
number) so we only need to add the uuid to it to identify the
filesystem it belongs to. The location is fixed based on the
sequence number, so there's no need to add a block number, either.

Hence the only additional fields are the CRC and LSN fields. These
are unlogged, so place some space between the end of the logged
fields and them so that future expansion of the AGF for logged
fields can be placed adjacent to the existing logged fields and
hence not complicate the field-derived range based logging we
currently have.

Based originally on a patch from myself, modified further by
Christoph Hellwig and then modified again to fit into the
verifier structure with additional fields by myself. The multiple
signed-off-by tags indicate the age and history of this patch.

ee1a47ab0e xfs: add support for large btree blocks
Add support for larger btree blocks that contains a CRC32C checksum,
a filesystem uuid and block number for detecting filesystem
consistency and out of place writes.

[dchinner@redhat.com] Also include an owner field to allow reverse
mappings to be implemented for improved repairability and a LSN
field to so that log recovery can easily determine the last
modification that made it to disk for each buffer.

[dchinner@redhat.com] Add buffer log format flags to indicate the
type of buffer to recovery so that we don't have to do blind magic
number tests to determine what the buffer is.

1813dd6405 xfs: convert buffer verifiers to an ops structure.
To separate the verifiers from iodone functions and associate read
and write verifiers at the same time, introduce a buffer verifier
operations structure to the xfs_buf.

This avoids the need for assigning the write verifier, clearing the
iodone function and re-running ioend processing in the read
verifier, and gets rid of the nasty "b_pre_io" name for the write
verifier function pointer. If we ever need to, it will also be
easier to add further content specific callbacks to a buffer with an
ops structure in place.

We also avoid needing to export verifier functions, instead we
can simply export the ops structures for those that are needed
outside the function they are defined in.

This patch also fixes a directory block readahead verifier issue
it exposed.

This patch also adds ops callbacks to the inode/alloc btree blocks
initialised by growfs. These will need more work before they will
work with CRCs.

98021821a5 xfs: verify superblocks as they are read from disk
Add a superblock verify callback function and pass it into the
buffer read functions. Remove the now redundant verification code
that is currently in use.

Adding verification shows that secondary superblocks never have
their "sb_inprogress" flag cleared by mkfs.xfs, so when validating
the secondary superblocks during a grow operation we have to avoid
checking this field. Even if we fix mkfs, we will still have to
ignore this field for verification purposes unless a version of mkfs
that does not have this bug was used.

eab4e63368 xfs: uncached buffer reads need to return an error
With verification being done as an IO completion callback, different
errors can be returned from a read. Uncached reads only return a
buffer or NULL on failure, which means the verification error cannot
be returned to the caller.

Split the error handling for these reads into two - a failure to get
a buffer will still return NULL, but a read error will return a
referenced buffer with b_error set rather than NULL. The caller is
responsible for checking the error state of the buffer returned.

c3f8fc73ac xfs: make buffer read verication an IO completion function
Add a verifier function callback capability to the buffer read
interfaces.  This will be used by the callers to supply a function
that verifies the contents of the buffer when it is read from disk.
This patch does not provide callback functions, but simply modifies
the interfaces to allow them to be called.

The reason for adding this to the read interfaces is that it is very
difficult to tell fom the outside is a buffer was just read from
disk or whether we just pulled it out of cache. Supplying a callbck
allows the buffer cache to use it's internal knowledge of the buffer
to execute it only when the buffer is read from disk.

It is intended that the verifier functions will mark the buffer with
an EFSCORRUPTED error when verification fails. This allows the
reading context to distinguish a verification error from an IO
error, and potentially take further actions on the buffer (e.g.
attempt repair) based on the error reported.

de497688da xfs: make growfs initialise the AGFL header
For verification purposes, AGFLs need to be initialised to a known
set of values. For upcoming CRC changes, they are also headers that
need to be initialised. Currently, growfs does neither for the AGFLs
- it ignores them completely. Add initialisation of the AGFL to be
full of invalid block numbers (NULLAGBLOCK) to put the
infrastructure in place needed for CRC support.

fd23683c3b xfs: growfs: use uncached buffers for new headers
When writing the new AG headers to disk, we can't attach write
verifiers because they have a dependency on the struct xfs-perag
being attached to the buffer to be fully initialised and growfs
can't fully initialise them until later in the process.

The simplest way to avoid this problem is to use uncached buffers
for writing the new headers. These buffers don't have the xfs-perag
attached to them, so it's simple to detect in the write verifier and
be able to skip the checks that need the xfs-perag.

This enables us to attach the appropriate buffer ops to the buffer
and hence calculate CRCs on the way to disk. IT also means that the
buffer is torn down immediately, and so the first access to the AG
headers will re-read the header from disk and perform full
verification of the buffer. This way we also can catch corruptions
due to problems that went undetected in growfs.

1375cb65e8 xfs: growfs: don't read garbage for new secondary superblocks
When updating new secondary superblocks in a growfs operation, the
superblock buffer is read from the newly grown region of the
underlying device. This is not guaranteed to be zero, so violates
the underlying assumption that the unused parts of superblocks are
zero filled. Get a new buffer for these secondary superblocks to
ensure that the unused regions are zero filled correctly.

ad1e95c54e xfs: clean up xfs_bit.h includes
With the removal of xfs_rw.h and other changes over time, xfs_bit.h
is being included in many files that don't actually need it. Clean
up the includes as necessary.

Also move the only-used-once xfs_ialloc_find_free() static inline
function out of a header file that is widely included to reduce
the number of needless dependencies on xfs_bit.h.

The only thing left in xfs_rw.h is a function prototype for an inode
function.  Move that to xfs_inode.h, and kill xfs_rw.h.

xfs_inode.c so we only have one function left in xfs_rw.c

7ca790a507 xfs: kill xfs_read_buf()
xfs_read_buf() is effectively the same as xfs_trans_read_buf() when called
outside a transaction context. The error handling is slightly different in that
xfs_read_buf stales the errored buffer it gets back, but there is probably good
reason for xfs_trans_read_buf() for doing this.

Hence update xfs_trans_read_buf() to the same error handling as xfs_read_buf(),
and convert all the callers of xfs_read_buf() to use the former function. We can
then remove xfs_read_buf().

e70b73f84f xfs: clean up buffer get/read call API
The xfs_buf_get/read API is not consistent in the units it uses, and
does not use appropriate or consistent units/types for the
variables.

Convert the API to use disk addresses and block counts for all
buffer get and read calls. Use consistent naming for all the
functions and their declarations, and convert the internal functions
to use disk addresses and block counts to avoid need to convert them
from one type to another and back again.

Fix all the callers to use disk addresses and block counts. In many
cases, this removes an additional conversion from the function call
as the callers already have a block count.

c4d0c3b097 xfs: prevent leaking uninitialized stack memory in FSGEOMETRY_V1
The FSGEOMETRY_V1 ioctl (and its compat equivalent) calls out to
xfs_fs_geometry() with a version number of 3.  This code path does not
fill in the logsunit member of the passed xfs_fsop_geom_t, leading to
the leaking of four bytes of uninitialized stack data to potentially
unprivileged callers.

v2 switches to memset() to avoid future issues if structure members
change, on suggestion of Dave Chinner.

c58efdb442 xfs: ensure log covering transactions are synchronous
To ensure the log is covered and the filesystem idles correctly, we
need to ensure that dummy transactions hit the disk and do not stay
pinned in memory.  If the superblock is pinned in memory, it can't
be flushed so the log covering cannot make progress. The result is
dependent on timing - more oftent han not we continue to issues a
log covering transaction every 36s rather than idling after ~90s.

Fix this by making the log covering transaction synchronous. To
avoid additional log force from xfssyncd, make the log covering
transaction take the place of the existing log force in the xfssyncd
background sync process.

055388a318 xfs: dynamic speculative EOF preallocation
Currently the size of the speculative preallocation during delayed
allocation is fixed by either the allocsize mount option of a
default size. We are seeing a lot of cases where we need to
recommend using the allocsize mount option to prevent fragmentation
when buffered writes land in the same AG.

Rather than using a fixed preallocation size by default (up to 64k),
make it dynamic by basing it on the current inode size. That way the
EOF preallocation will increase as the file size increases.  Hence
for streaming writes we are much more likely to get large
preallocations exactly when we need it to reduce fragementation.

For default settings, the size of the initial extents is determined
by the number of parallel writers and the amount of memory in the
machine. For 4GB RAM and 4 concurrent 32GB file writes:

Because it is hard to take back specualtive preallocation, cases
where there are large slow growing log files on a nearly full
filesystem may cause premature ENOSPC. Hence as the filesystem nears
full, the maximum dynamic prealloc size іs reduced according to this
table (based on 4k block size):

This should reduce the amount of space held in speculative
preallocation for such cases.

The allocsize mount option turns off the dynamic behaviour and fixes
the prealloc size to whatever the mount option specifies. i.e. the
behaviour is unchanged.

Export xfs_icsb_modify_counters and always use it for modifying
the per-cpu counters.  Remove support for per-cpu counters from

1922c949c5 xfs: use unhashed buffers for size checks
When we are checking we can access the last block of each device, we
do not need to use cached buffers as they will be tossed away
immediately. Use uncached buffers for size checks so that all IO
prior to full in-memory structure initialisation does not use the
buffer cache.

1a387d3be2 xfs: dummy transactions should not dirty VFS state
When we  need to cover the log, we issue dummy transactions to ensure
the current log tail is on disk. Unfortunately we currently use the
root inode in the dummy transaction, and the act of committing the
transaction dirties the inode at the VFS level.

As a result, the VFS writeback of the dirty inode will prevent the
filesystem from idling long enough for the log covering state
machine to complete. The state machine gets stuck in a loop issuing
new dummy transactions to cover the log and never makes progress.

To avoid this problem, the dummy transactions should not cause
externally visible state changes. To ensure this occurs, make sure
that dummy transactions log an unchanging field in the superblock as
it's state is never propagated outside the filesystem. This allows
the log covering state machine to complete successfully and the
filesystem now correctly enters a fully idle state about 90s after
the last modification was made.

898621d5a7 xfs: simplify inode to transaction joining
Currently we need to either call IHOLD or xfs_trans_ihold on an inode when
joining it to a transaction via xfs_trans_ijoin.

This patches instead makes xfs_trans_ijoin usable on it's own by doing
an implicity xfs_trans_ihold, which also allows us to drop the third
argument.  For the case where we want to hold a reference on the inode
a xfs_trans_ijoin_ref wrapper is added which does the IHOLD and marks
the inode for needing an xfs_iput.  In addition to the cleaner interface
to the caller this also simplifies the implementation.

288699feca xfs: drop dmapi hooks
Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks
bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem.

This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead.  If we'll ever get HSM
support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner
in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this
is much help for future work.

1c1c6ebcf5 xfs: Replace per-ag array with a radix tree
The use of an array for the per-ag structures requires reallocation
of the array when growing the filesystem. This requires locking
access to the array to avoid use after free situations, and the
locking is difficult to get right. To avoid needing to reallocate an
array, change the per-ag structures to an allocated object per ag
and index them using a tree structure.

The AGs are always densely indexed (hence the use of an array), but
the number supported is 2^32 and lookups tend to be random and hence
indexing needs to scale. A simple choice is a radix tree - it works
well with this sort of index.  This change also removes another
large contiguous allocation from the mount/growfs path in XFS.

The growing process now needs to change to only initialise the new
AGs required for the extra space, and as such only needs to
exclusively lock the tree for inserts. The rest of the code only
needs to lock the tree while doing lookups, and hence this will
remove all the deadlocks that currently occur on the m_perag_lock as
it is now an innermost lock. The lock is also changed to a spinlock
from a read/write lock as the hold time is now extremely short.

To complete the picture, the per-ag structures will need to be
reference counted to ensure that we don't free/modify them while
they are still in use.  This will be done in subsequent patch.

Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the
out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer.

To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable
all xfs trace channels by:

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable

or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one
event subdirectory, e.g.

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable

or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt
all this is desctribed in more detail.  To reads the events do a

   cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace

Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to
the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new
tracing facility also employ.  This allows a very fine-grained control
of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the
perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter,
     allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various
     spots in XFS.  Take a look at

Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require
additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to
deliver it later.

And the really nice thing about this patch is that it actually removes

6ad112bfb5 xfs: simplify xfs_buf_get / xfs_buf_read interfaces
Currently the low-level buffer cache interfaces are highly confusing
as we have a _flags variant of each that does actually respect the
flags, and one without _flags which has a flags argument that gets
ignored and overriden with a default set.  Given that very few places
use the default arguments get rid of the duplication and convert all
callers to pass the flags explicitly.  Also remove the now confusing
_flags postfix.

80641dc66a xfs: I/O completion handlers must use NOFS allocations
When completing I/O requests we must not allow the memory allocator to
recurse into the filesystem, as we might deadlock on waiting for the
I/O completion otherwise.  The only thing currently allocating normal
GFP_KERNEL memory is the allocation of the transaction structure for
the unwritten extent conversion.  Add a memflags argument to
_xfs_trans_alloc to allow controlling the allocator behaviour.

e6da7c9fed xfs: fix overflow in xfs_growfs_data_private
In the case where growing a filesystem would leave the last AG
too small, the fixup code has an overflow in the calculation
of the new size with one fewer ag, because "nagcount" is a 32
bit number.  If the new filesystem has > 2^32 blocks in it
this causes a problem resulting in an EINVAL return from growfs:

c4be0c1dc4 filesystem freeze: add error handling of write_super_lockfs/unlockfs
Currently, ext3 in mainline Linux doesn't have the freeze feature which
suspends write requests.  So, we cannot take a backup which keeps the
filesystem's consistency with the storage device's features (snapshot and
replication) while it is mounted.

In many case, a commercial filesystem (e.g.  VxFS) has the freeze feature
and it would be used to get the consistent backup.

If Linux's standard filesystem ext3 has the freeze feature, we can do it
without a commercial filesystem.

So I have implemented the ioctls of the freeze feature.
I think we can take the consistent backup with the following steps.
1. Freeze the filesystem with the freeze ioctl.
2. Separate the replication volume or create the snapshot
   with the storage device's feature.
3. Unfreeze the filesystem with the unfreeze ioctl.
4. Take the backup from the separated replication volume
   or the snapshot.

This patch:

VFS:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that they can return an error.
Rename write_super_lockfs and unlockfs of the super block operation
freeze_fs and unfreeze_fs to avoid a confusion.

ext3, ext4, xfs, gfs2, jfs:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that write_super_lockfs returns an error if needed,
and unlockfs always returns 0.

reiserfs:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that they always return 0 (success) to keep a current behavior.

743bb4650d [XFS] Move copy_from_user calls out of ioctl helpers into ioctl switch.
Moving the copy_from_user out of some of the ioctl helpers will
make it easier for the compat ioctl switch to copy in the right
struct, then just pass to the underlying helper.

Also, move common access checks into the helpers themselves,
and out of the native ioctl switch code, to reduce code
duplication between native & compat ioctl callers.

7cc95a821d [XFS] Always use struct xfs_btree_block instead of short / longform
structures.

Always use the generic xfs_btree_block type instead of the short / long
structures. Add XFS_BTREE_SBLOCK_LEN / XFS_BTREE_LBLOCK_LEN defines for
the length of a short / long form block. The rationale for this is that we
will grow more btree block header variants to support CRCs and other RAS
information, and always accessing them through the same datatype with
unions for the short / long form pointers makes implementing this much
easier.

136341b41a [XFS] cleanup btree record / key / ptr addressing macros.
Replace the generic record / key / ptr addressing macros that use cpp
token pasting with simpler macros that do the job for just one given btree
type. The new macros lose the cur argument and thus can be used outside
the core btree code, but also gain an xfs_mount * argument to allow for
checking the CRC flag in the near future. Note that many of these macros
aren't actually used in the kernel code, but only in userspace (mostly in
xfs_repair).

Implement ASCII case-insensitive support. It's primary purpose is for
supporting existing filesystems that already use this case-insensitive
mode migrated from IRIX. But, if you only need ASCII-only case-insensitive
support (ie. English only) and will never use another language, then this
mode is perfectly adequate.

ASCII-CI is implemented by generating hashes based on lower-case letters
and doing lower-case compares. It implements a new xfs_nameops vector for
doing the hashes and comparisons for all filename operations.

To create a filesystem with this CI mode, use: # mkfs.xfs -n version=ci
