67216b94d4 lockd: Clean up nlmsvc_lookup_host()
Clean up.

Change nlmsvc_lookup_host() to be purpose-built for server-side
nlm_host management. This replaces the generic nlm_lookup_host()
helper function, just like on the client side. The lookup logic is
specialized for server host lookups.

The server side cache also gets its own specialized equivalent of the
nlm_release_host() function.

8ea6ecc8b0 lockd: Create client-side nlm_host cache
NFS clients don't need the garbage collection processing that is
performed on nlm_host structures. The client picks up an nlm_host at
mount time and holds a reference to it until the file system is
unmounted.

Servers, on the other hand, don't have a precise way to tell when an
nlm_host is no longer being used, so zero refcount nlm_host entries
are left to expire in the cache after a time.

Basically there's nothing holding a reference to an nlm_host between
individual server-side NLM requests, but we can't afford the expense
of recreating them for every new NLM request from a client. The
nlm_host cache adds some lifetime hysteresis to entries in the cache
so the next time a particular nlm_host is needed, it's likely to be
discovered by a lookup rather than created from whole cloth.

With the new implementation, client nlm_host cache items are no longer
garbage collected, and are destroyed directly by a new release
function specialized for client entries, nlmclnt_release_host(). They
are cached in their own data structure, and have their own lookup
logic, simplified and specialized for client nlm_host entries.

However, the client nlm_host cache still shares reboot recovery logic
with the server nlm_host cache. The NSM "peer rebooted" downcall for
clients and servers still come through the same RPC call. This is a
legacy formal API that would be difficult to alter, and besides, the
user space NSM implementation can't tell the difference between peers
that are clients or servers.

For this reason, the client cache continues to share the
nlm_host_mutex (and reboot recovery logic) with the server cache.

7db836d4a4 lockd: Split nlm_release_call()
The nlm_release_call() function is invoked from both the server and
the client side. We're about to introduce a distinct server- and
client-side nlm_release_host(), so nlm_release_call() must first be
split into a client-side and a server-side version.

a7952f4056 lockd: Add nlm_alloc_host()
Refactor nlm_host allocation and initialization into a separate
function. This will be the common piece of server and client nlm_host
lookup logic after the nlm_host cache is split.

Small change: use kmalloc() instead of kzalloc(), as we're overwriting
almost all fields in the new nlm_host struct with non-zero values
immediately after it is allocated. An added benefit is we now have an
explicit reference to each field name where it is initialized (for all
you cscope fans out there).

49b170047f NSM: Avoid return code checking in NSM XDR encoder functions
Clean up.

The trend in the other XDR encoder functions is to BUG() when encoding
problems occur, since a problem here is always due to a local coding
error. Then, instead of a status, zero is unconditionally returned.

Update the NSM XDR encoders to behave this way.

To finish the update, use the new-style be32_to_cpup() and
cpu_to_be32() macros, and compute the buffer sizes using raw integers
instead of sizeof(). This matches the conventions used in other XDR
functions

3460f29a27 lockd: Introduce new-style XDR functions for NLMv4
We'd like to prevent local buffer overflows caused by malicious or
broken servers. New xdr_stream style decoders can do that.

For efficiency, we also want to be able to pass xdr_streams from
call_encode() to all XDR encoding functions, rather than building
an xdr_stream in every XDR encoding function in the kernel.

Same idea as the NLM v3 XDR overhaul.

2b061f9ef2 lockd: Introduce new-style XDR functions for NLMv3
We'd like to prevent local buffer overflows caused by malicious or
broken servers. New xdr_stream style decoders can do that.

For efficiency, we also eventually want to be able to pass xdr_streams
from call_encode() and call_decode() to all XDR encoding functions,
rather than building an xdr_stream in every XDR encoding and decoding
function in the kernel.

To do all of this, rewrite the XDR encoding and decoding functions in
fs/lockd/xdr.c to use xdr_streams. This makes them more or less
incompatible with server-side XDR helper functions, so break them out
into a separate source file.

Static helper functions are left without the "inline" directive. This
allows the compiler to choose automatically how to optimize these for
size or speed.

SHARE-related functionality doesn't seem to be used, as those
functions are hiding behind a #define that isn't set anywhere that I
can find. And, they've been in there forever (at least as far back as
the kernel's git history goes), yet remain unused. Let's take the
opportunity to bin them. It should be easy enough for someone to
introduce proper XDR functions if at some point SHARE-related NLM
functionality is desired.

5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

7e469af97e lockd: don't clear sm_monitored on nsm_reboot_lookup
When lockd gets a notify downcall from statd, it'll search its hosts
cache and then clear the sm_monitored bit on the host it finds. The idea
is apparently to make lockd redo a SM_MON on the next lock request.

This is unnecessary and causes the kernel's NSM cache to go out of sync
with statd. statd doesn't stop monitoring a host when it gets a
SM_NOTIFY and there's no guarantee that another lock will occur after
the reclaim and before the unmount. In that event, no SM_UNMON will
occur.

6c9dc42551 lockd: Update NSM state from SM_MON replies
When rpc.statd starts up in user space at boot time, it attempts to
write the latest NSM local state number into
/proc/sys/fs/nfs/nsm_local_state.

If lockd.ko isn't loaded yet (as is the case in most configurations),
that file doesn't exist, thus the kernel's NSM state remains set to
its initial value of zero during lockd operation.

This is a problem because rpc.statd and lockd use the NSM state number
to prevent repeated lock recovery on rebooted hosts. If lockd sends
a zero NSM state, but then a delayed SM_NOTIFY with a real NSM state
number is received, there is no way for lockd or rpc.statd to
distinguish that stale SM_NOTIFY from an actual reboot. Thus lock
recovery could be performed after the rebooted host has already
started reclaiming locks, and those locks will be lost.

We could change /etc/init.d/nfslock so it always modprobes lockd.ko
before starting rpc.statd. However, if lockd.ko is ever unloaded
and reloaded, we are back at square one, since the NSM state is not
preserved across an unload/reload cycle. This may happen frequently
on clients that use automounter. A period of NFS inactivity causes
lockd.ko to be unloaded, and the kernel loses its NSM state setting.

Instead, let's use the fact that rpc.statd plants the local system's
NSM state in every SM_MON (and SM_UNMON) reply. lockd performs a
synchronous SM_MON upcall to the local rpc.statd _before_ sending its
first NLM request to a new remote. This would permit rpc.statd to
provide the current NSM state to lockd, even after lockd.ko had been
unloaded and reloaded.

Note that NLMPROC_LOCK arguments are constructed before the
nsm_monitor() call, so we have to rearrange argument construction very
slightly to make this all work out.

And, the kernel appears to treat NSM state as a u32 (see struct
nlm_args and nsm_res). Make nsm_local_state a u32 as well, to ensure
we don't get bogus comparison results.

a9e61e25f9 lockd: call locks_release_private to cleanup per-filesystem state
For every lock request lockd creates a new file_lock object
in nlmsvc_setgrantargs() by copying the passed in file_lock with
locks_copy_lock(). A filesystem can attach it's own lock_operations
vector to the file_lock. It has to be cleaned up at the end of the
file_lock's life. However, lockd doesn't do it today, yet it
asserts in nlmclnt_release_lockargs() that the per-filesystem
state is clean.
This patch fixes it by exporting locks_release_private() and adding
it to nlmsvc_freegrantargs(), to be symmetrical to creating a
file_lock in nlmsvc_setgrantargs().

eb16e90778 lockd: Start PF_INET6 listener only if IPv6 support is available
Apparently a lot of people need to disable IPv6 completely on their
distributor-built systems, which have CONFIG_IPV6_MODULE enabled at
build time.

They do this by blacklisting the ipv6.ko module. This causes the
creation of the lockd service listener to fail if CONFIG_IPV6_MODULE
is set, but the module cannot be loaded.

Now that the kernel's PF_INET6 RPC listeners are completely separate
from PF_INET listeners, we can always start PF_INET. Then lockd can
try to start PF_INET6, but it isn't required to be available.

Note this has the added benefit that NLM callbacks from AF_INET6
servers will never come from AF_INET remotes. We no longer have to
worry about matching mapped IPv4 addresses to AF_INET when comparing
addresses.

57df675c60 NLM: Fix GRANT callback address comparison when IPv6 is enabled
The NFS mount command may pass an AF_INET server address to lockd. If

9d9b87c121 lockd: fix regression in lockd's handling of blocked locks
If a client requests a blocking lock, is denied, then requests it again,
then here in nlmsvc_lock() we will call vfs_lock_file() without FL_SLEEP
set, because we've already queued a block and don't need the locks code
to do it again.

But that means vfs_lock_file() will return -EAGAIN instead of
FILE_LOCK_DENIED. So we still need to translate that -EAGAIN return
into a nlm_lck_blocked error in this case, and put ourselves back on
lockd's block list.

The bug was introduced by bde74e4bc6 "locks: add special return
value for asynchronous locks".

Thanks to Frank van Maarseveen for the report; his original test
case was essentially

94da7663db NSM: Replace IP address as our nlm_reboot lookup key
NLM provides file locking services for NFS files. Part of this service
includes a second protocol, known as NSM, which is a reboot
notification service. NLM uses this service to determine when to
reclaim locks or enter a grace period after a client or server reboots.

The NLM service (implemented by lockd in the Linux kernel) contacts
the local NSM service (implemented by rpc.statd in Linux user space)
via NSM protocol upcalls to register a callback when a particular
remote peer reboots.

To match the callback to the correct remote peer, the NLM service
constructs a cookie that it passes in the request. The NSM service
passes that cookie back to the NLM service when it is notified that
the given remote peer has indeed rebooted.

Currently on Linux, the cookie is the raw 32-bit IPv4 address of the
remote peer. To support IPv6 addresses, which are larger, we could
use all 16 bytes of the cookie to represent a full IPv6 address,
although we still can't represent an IPv6 address with a scope ID in
just 16 bytes.

Instead, to avoid the need for future changes to support additional
address types, we'll use a manufactured value for the cookie, and use
that to find the corresponding nsm_handle struct in the kernel during
the NLMPROC_SM_NOTIFY callback.

This should provide complete support in the kernel's NSM
implementation for IPv6 hosts, while remaining backwards compatible
with older rpc.statd implementations.

Note we also deal with another case where nsm_use_hostnames can change
while there are outstanding notifications, possibly resulting in the
loss of reboot notifications. After this patch, the priv cookie is
always used to lookup rebooted hosts in the kernel.

Introduce a new API to fs/lockd/mon.c that allows nlm_host_rebooted()

576df4634e NLM: Decode "priv" argument of NLMPROC_SM_NOTIFY as an opaque
The NLM XDR decoders for the NLMPROC_SM_NOTIFY procedure should treat
their "priv" argument truly as an opaque, as defined by the protocol,
and let the upper layers figure out what is in it.

This will make it easier to modify the contents and interpretation of
the "priv" argument, and keep knowledge about what's in "priv" local
to fs/lockd/mon.c.

For now, the NLM and NSM implementations should behave exactly as they
did before.

The formation of the address of the rebooted host in
nlm_host_rebooted() may look a little strange, but it is the inverse
of how nsm_init_private() forms the private cookie. Plus, it's
going away soon anyway.

67c6d107a6 NSM: Move nsm_find() to fs/lockd/mon.c
The nsm_find() function sets up fresh nsm_handle entries. This is
where we will store the "priv" cookie used to lookup nsm_handles during
reboot recovery. The cookie will be constructed when nsm_find()
creates a new nsm_handle.

As much as possible, I would like to keep everything that handles a
"priv" cookie in fs/lockd/mon.c so that all the smarts are in one
source file. That organization should make it pretty simple to see how
all this works.

To me, it makes more sense than the current arrangement to keep
nsm_find() with nsm_monitor() and nsm_unmonitor().

So, start reorganizing by moving nsm_find() into fs/lockd/mon.c. The
nsm_release() function comes along too, since it shares the nsm_lock

All references to the nlm_host are gone before it is freed. We can

5d254b1198 NSM: Make sure to return an error if the SM_MON call result is not zero
The nsm_monitor() function reports an error and does not set sm_monitored
if the SM_MON upcall reply has a non-zero result code, but nsm_monitor()
does not return an error to its caller in this case.

Since sm_monitored is not set, the upcall is retried when the next NLM
request invokes nsm_monitor(). However, that may not come for a while.
In the meantime, at least one NLM request will potentially proceed
without the peer being monitored properly.

Have nsm_monitor() return an error if the result code is non-zero.
This will cause all NLM requests to fail immediately if the upcall
completed successfully but rpc.statd returned an error.

This may be inconvenient in some cases (for example if rpc.statd
cannot complete a proper DNS reverse lookup of the hostname), but will
make the reboot monitoring service more robust by forcing such issues
to be corrected by an admin.

29ed1407ed NSM: Support IPv6 version of mon_name
The "mon_name" argument of the NSMPROC_MON and NSMPROC_UNMON upcalls
is a string that contains the hostname or IP address of the remote peer
to be notified when this host has rebooted. The sm-notify command uses
this identifier to contact the peer when we reboot, so it must be
either a well-qualified DNS hostname or a presentation format IP
address string.

When the "nsm_use_hostnames" sysctl is set to zero, the kernel's NSM
provides a presentation format IP address in the "mon_name" argument.
Otherwise, the "caller_name" argument from NLM requests is used,
which is usually just the DNS hostname of the peer.

To support IPv6 addresses for the mon_name argument, we use the
nsm_handle's address eye-catcher, which already contains an appropriate
presentation format address string. Using the eye-catcher string
obviates the need to use a large buffer on the stack to form the
presentation address string for the upcall.

This patch also addresses a subtle bug.

An NSMPROC_MON request and the subsequent NSMPROC_UNMON request for the
same peer are required to use the same value for the "mon_name"
argument. Otherwise, rpc.statd's NSMPROC_UNMON processing cannot
locate the database entry for that peer and remove it.

If the setting of nsm_use_hostnames is changed between the time the
kernel sends an NSMPROC_MON request and the time it sends the
NSMPROC_UNMON request for the same peer, the "mon_name" argument for
these two requests may not be the same. This is because the value of
"mon_name" is currently chosen at the moment the call is made based on
the setting of nsm_use_hostnames

To ensure both requests pass identical contents in the "mon_name"
argument, we now select which string to use for the argument in the
nsm_monitor() function. A pointer to this string is saved in the
nsm_handle so it can be used for a subsequent NSMPROC_UNMON upcall.

NB: There are other potential problems, such as how nlm_host_rebooted()
might behave if nsm_use_hostnames were changed while hosts are still
being monitored. This patch does not attempt to address those
problems.

df94f000c4 lockd: convert reclaimer thread to kthread interface
My understanding is that there is a push to turn the kernel_thread
interface into a non-exported symbol and move all kernel threads to use
the kthread API. This patch changes lockd to use kthread_run to spawn
the reclaimer thread.

I've made the assumption here that the extra module references taken
when we spawn this thread are unnecessary and removed them. I've also
added a KERN_ERR printk that pops if the thread can't be spawned to warn
the admin that the locks won't be reclaimed.

In the future, it would be nice to be able to notify userspace that
locks have been lost (probably by implementing SIGLOST), and adding some
good policies about how long we should reattempt to reclaim the locks.

Finally, I removed a comment about memory leaks that I believe is
obsolete and added a new one to clarify the result of sending a SIGKILL
to the reclaimer thread. As best I can tell, doing so doesn't actually
cause a memory leak.

I consider this patch 2.6.29 material.

a8d82d9b95 NLM: client-side nlm_lookup_host() should avoid matching on srcaddr
Since commit c98451bd, the loop in nlm_lookup_host() unconditionally
compares the host's h_srcaddr field to the incoming source address.
For client-side nlm_host entries, both are always AF_UNSPEC, so this
check is unnecessary.

Since commit 781b61a6, which added support for AF_INET6 addresses to
nlm_cmp_addr(), nlm_cmp_addr() now returns FALSE for AF_UNSPEC
addresses, which causes nlm_lookup_host() to create a fresh nlm_host
entry every time it is called on the client.

These extra entries will eventually expire once the server is
unmounted, so the impact of this regression, introduced with lockd
IPv6 support in 2.6.28, should be minor.

We could fix this by adding an arm in nlm_cmp_addr() for AF_UNSPEC
addresses, but really, nlm_lookup_host() shouldn't be matching on the
srcaddr field for client-side nlm_host lookups.

The latter is the only one that concerns me at all - I don't know
if this might be a problem with some servers.

Unfortunately it is a problem for Linux itself. The rpc.statd daemon
on Linux uses UDP for contacting the local lockd, no matter which
protocol is used for NFS mounts. Without a local lockd UDP listener,
NFSv2/v3 lock recovery from Linux NFS clients always fails.

Revert parts of commit 24e36663 so lockd_up() always starts both
listeners.

9a38a83880 lockd: Remove unused fields in the nlm_reboot structure
The nlm_reboot structure is used to store information provided by the
NSM_NOTIFY procedure. This procedure is not specified by the NLM or NSM
protocols, other than to say that the procedure can be used to transmit
information private to a particular NLM/NSM implementation.

For Linux, the callback arguments include the name of the monitored host,
the new NSM state of the host, and a 16-byte private opaque.

As a clean up, remove the unused fields and the server-side XDR logic that
decodes them.

b85e467634 lockd: Add helper to sanity check incoming NOTIFY requests
lockd accepts SM_NOTIFY calls only from a privileged process on the

d22b1cff09 lockd: reject reclaims outside the grace period
The current lockd does not reject reclaims that arrive outside of the
grace period.

Accepting a reclaim means promising to the client that no conflicting
locks were granted since last it held the lock. We can meet that
promise if we assume the only lockers are nfs clients, and that they are
sufficiently well-behaved to reclaim only locks that they held before,
and that only reclaim locks have been permitted so far. Once we leave
the grace period (and start permitting non-reclaims), we can no longer
keep that promise. So we must start rejecting reclaims at that point.

af558e33be nfsd: common grace period control
Rewrite grace period code to unify management of grace period across
lockd and nfsd. The current code has lockd and nfsd cooperate to
compute a grace period which is satisfactory to them both, and then
individually enforce it. This creates a slight race condition, since
the enforcement is not coordinated. It's also more complicated than
necessary.

Here instead we have lockd and nfsd each inform common code when they
enter the grace period, and when they're ready to leave the grace
period, and allow normal locking only after both of them are ready to
leave.

We also expect the locks_start_grace()/locks_end_grace() interface here
to be simpler to build on for future cluster/high-availability work,
which may require (for example) putting individual filesystems into
grace, or enforcing grace periods across multiple cluster nodes.

c8ab5f2a13 lockd: don't depend on lockd main loop to end grace
End lockd's grace period using schedule_delayed_work() instead of a
check on every pass through the main loop.

After a later patch, we'll depend on lockd to end its grace period even
if it's not currently handling requests; so it shouldn't depend on being
woken up from the main loop to do so.

Also, Nakano Hiroaki (who independently produced a similar patch)
noticed that the current behavior is buggy in the face of jiffies
wraparound:

"lockd uses time_before() to determine whether the grace period
has expired. This would seem to be enough to avoid timer
wrap-around issues, but, unfortunately, that is not the case.
The time_* family of comparison functions can be safely used to
compare jiffies relatively close in time, but they stop working
after approximately LONG_MAX/2 ticks. nfsd can suffer this
problem because the time_before() comparison in lockd() is not
performed until the first request comes in, which means that if
there is no lockd traffic for more than LONG_MAX/2 ticks we are
	screwed.

"The implication of this is that once time_before() starts
misbehaving any attempt from a NFS client to execute fcntl()
will be received with a NLM_LCK_DENIED_GRACE_PERIOD message for
25 days (assuming HZ=1000). In other words, the 50 seconds grace
period could turn into a grace period of 50 days or more.

"Note: This bug was analyzed independently by Oda-san

bde74e4bc6 locks: add special return value for asynchronous locks
Use a special error value FILE_LOCK_DEFERRED to mean that a locking
operation returned asynchronously. This is returned by

posix_lock_file() for sleeping locks to mean that the lock has been
queued on the block list, and will be woken up when it might become
available and needs to be retried (either fl_lmops->fl_notify() is
called or fl_wait is woken up).

f_op->lock() to mean either the above, or that the filesystem will
call back with fl_lmops->fl_grant() when the result of the locking
operation is known. The filesystem can do this for sleeping as well
  as non-sleeping locks.

This is to make sure, that return values of -EAGAIN and -EINPROGRESS by
filesystems are not mistaken to mean an asynchronous locking.

This also makes error handling in fs/locks.c and lockd/svclock.c slightly
cleaner.

4373ea84c8 lockd: unlock lockd locks associated with a given server ip
For high-availability NFS service, we generally need to be able to drop
file locks held on the exported filesystem before moving clients to a
new server. Currently the only way to do that is by shutting down lockd
entirely, which is often undesireable (for example, if you want to
continue exporting other filesystems).

This patch allows the administrator to release all locks held by clients
accessing the client through a given server ip address, by echoing that
address to a new file, /proc/fs/nfsd/unlock_ip, as in:

shell> echo 10.1.1.2 > /proc/fs/nfsd/unlock_ip

The expected sequence of events can be:
1. Tear down the IP address
2. Unexport the path
3. Write IP to /proc/fs/nfsd/unlock_ip to unlock files
4. Signal peer to begin take-over.

For now we only support IPv4 addresses and NFSv2/v3 (NFSv4 locks are not
affected).

Also, if unmounting the filesystem is required, we assume at step 3 that
clients using the given server ip are the only clients holding locks on
the given filesystem; otherwise, an additional patch is required to
allow revoking all locks held by lockd on a given filesystem.

f97c650dda NLM: don't let lockd exit on unexpected svc_recv errors (try #2)
When svc_recv returns an unexpected error, lockd will print a warning
and exit. This problematic for several reasons. In particular, it will
cause the reference counts for the thread to be wrong, and can lead to a
potential BUG() call.

Rather than exiting on error from svc_recv, have the thread do a 1s
sleep and then retry the loop. This is unlikely to cause any harm, and
if the error turns out to be something temporary then it may be able to
recover.

d751a7cd06 NLM: Convert lockd to use kthreads
Have lockd_up start lockd using kthread_run. With this change,
lockd_down now blocks until lockd actually exits, so there's no longer
need for the waitqueue code at the end of lockd_down. This also means
that only one lockd can be running at a time which simplifies the code
within lockd's main loop.

This also adds a check for kthread_should_stop in the main loop of
nlmsvc_retry_blocked and after that function returns. There's no sense
continuing to retry blocks if lockd is coming down anyway.

1447d25eb3 knfsd: Remove NLM_HOST_MAX and associated logic.
Lockd caches information about hosts that have recently held locks to
expedite the taking of further locks.

It periodically discards this information for hosts that have not been
used for a few minutes.

lockd currently has a value NLM_HOST_MAX, and changes the 'garbage
collection' behaviour when the number of hosts exceeds this threshold.

However its behaviour is strange, and likely not what was intended.
When the number of hosts exceeds the max, it scans *less* often (every
2 minutes vs every minute) and allows unused host information to
remain around longer (5 minutes instead of 2).

Having this limit is of dubious value anyway, and we have not
suffered from the code not getting the limit right, so remove the
limit altogether. We go with the larger values (discard 5 minute old
hosts every 2 minutes) as they are probably safer.

Maybe the periodic garbage collection should be replace to with
'shrinker' handler so we just respond to memory pressure....

The following patch converts the NFSv2/v3 locking code to use the same
mechanism as NFSv4 for sending asynchronous RPC calls and then waiting for
them to complete. This ensures that the UNLOCK and CANCEL RPC calls will
complete even if the user interrupts the call, yet satisfies the

	http://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156

For now, disable the sysctl registration calls in lockd if CONFIG_SYSCTL
is not enabled. This allows the kernel to build properly if PROC_FS or
SYSCTL is not enabled, but an NFS client is desired.

In the long run, we would like to be able to build the kernel with an
NFS client but without lockd. This makes sense, for example, if you want

9706501e43 NLM: don't reattempt GRANT_MSG when there is already an RPC in flight
With the current scheme in nlmsvc_grant_blocked, we can end up with more
than one GRANT_MSG callback for a block in flight. Right now, we requeue
the block unconditionally so that a GRANT_MSG callback is done again in
30s. If the client is unresponsive, it can take more than 30s for the
call already in flight to time out.

There's no benefit to having more than one GRANT_MSG RPC queued up at a
time, so put it on the list with a timeout of NLM_NEVER before doing the
RPC call. If the RPC call submission fails, we requeue it with a short
timeout. If it works, then nlmsvc_grant_callback will end up requeueing
it with a shorter timeout after it completes.

90bd17c878 NLM: have server-side RPC clients default to soft RPC tasks

031fd3aa20 NLM: set RPC_CLNT_CREATE_NOPING for NLM RPC clients
It's currently possible for an unresponsive NLM client to completely
lock up a server's lockd. The scenario is something like this:

1) client1 (or a process on the server) takes a lock on a file
2) client2 tries to take a blocking lock on the same file and
   awaits the callback
3) client2 goes unresponsive (plug pulled, network partition, etc)
4) client1 releases the lock

...at that point the server's lockd will try to queue up a GRANT_MSG
callback for client2, but first it requeues the block with a timeout of
30s. nlm_async_call will attempt to bind the RPC client to client2 and
will call rpc_ping. rpc_ping entails a sync RPC call and if client2 is
unresponsive it will take around 60s for that to time out. Once it times
out, it's already time to retry the block and the whole process repeats.

Once in this situation, nlmsvc_retry_blocked will never return until
the host starts responding again. lockd won't service new calls.

Fix this by skipping the RPC ping on NLM RPC clients. This makes
nlm_async_call return quickly when called.

b7e6b86948 lockd: fix reference count leaks in async locking case
In a number of places where we wish only to translate nlm_drop_reply to

48df020aa1 NLM: Fix sign of length of NLM variable length strings
According to The Open Group's NLM specification, NLM callers are variable
length strings. XDR variable length strings use an unsigned 32 bit length.
And internally, negative string lengths are not meaningful for the Linux

Clean up: Make nlm_lock.len and nlm_reboot.len unsigned integers. This

1093a60ef3 NLM/NFS: Use cached nlm_host when calling nlmclnt_proc()
Now that each NFS mount point caches its own nlm_host structure, it can be
passed to nlmclnt_proc() for each lock request. By pinning an nlm_host for
each mount point, we trade the overhead of looking up or creating a fresh
nlm_host struct during every NLM procedure call for a little extra memory.

We also restrict the nlmclnt_proc symbol to limit the use of this call to
in-tree modules.

Note that nlm_lookup_host() (just removed from the client's per-request
NLM processing) could also trigger an nlm_host garbage collection. Now
client-side nlm_host garbage collection occurs only during NFS mount
processing. Since the NFS client now holds a reference on these nlm_host
structures, they wouldn't have been affected by garbage collection
anyway.

Given that nlm_lookup_host() reorders the global nlm_host chain after
every successful lookup, and that a garbage collection could be triggered
during the call, we've removed a significant amount of per-NLM-request
CPU processing overhead.

Sidebar: there are only a few remaining references to the internals of
NFS inodes in the client-side NLM code. The only references I found are
related to extracting or comparing the inode's file handle via NFS_FH().
One is in nlmclnt_grant(); the other is in nlmclnt_setlockargs().

52c4044d00 NLM: Introduce external nlm_host set-up and tear-down functions
We would like to remove the per-lock-operation nlm_lookup_host() call from
nlmclnt_proc().

The new architecture pins an nlm_host structure to each NFS client
superblock that has the "lock" mount option set. The NFS client passes
in the pinned nlm_host structure during each call to nlmclnt_proc(). NFS
client unmount processing "puts" the nlm_host so it can be garbage-
collected later.

This patch introduces externally callable NLM functions that handle
mount-time nlm_host set up and tear-down.

255129d1e9 NLM: Fix a circular lock dependency in lockd
The problem is that the garbage collector for the 'host' structures
nlm_gc_hosts(), holds nlm_host_mutex while calling down to
nlmsvc_mark_resources, which, eventually takes the file->f_mutex.

We cannot therefore call nlmsvc_lookup_host() from within
nlmsvc_create_block, since the caller will already hold file->f_mutex, so
the attempt to grab nlm_host_mutex may deadlock.

Fix the problem by calling nlmsvc_lookup_host() outside the file->f_mutex.

9a8db97e77 knfsd: lockd: nfsd4: use same grace period for lockd and nfsd4
Both lockd and (in the nfsv4 case) nfsd enforce a "grace period" after reboot,
during which clients may reclaim locks from the previous server instance, but
may not acquire new locks.

Currently the lockd and nfsd enforce grace periods of different lengths. This
may cause problems when we reboot a server with both v2/v3 and v4 clients.
For example, if the lockd grace period is shorter (as is likely the case),
then a v3 client might acquire a new lock that conflicts with a lock already
held (but not yet reclaimed) by a v4 client.

This patch calculates a lease time that lockd and nfsd can both use.

8314418629 Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by default
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel
threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This
approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either
set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't
care for the freezing of tasks at all.

It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to
be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any
freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is
done in this patch.

The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to
have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable()
function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to
unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel
threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional)
change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to
describe the freezing of tasks more accurately.

1a8322b2b0 lockd: add code to handle deferred lock requests
Rewrite nlmsvc_lock() to use the asynchronous interface.

As with testlock, we answer nlm requests in nlmsvc_lock by first looking up
the block and then using the results we find in the block if B_QUEUED is
set, and calling vfs_lock_file() otherwise.

If this a new lock request and we get -EINPROGRESS return on a non-blocking
request then we defer the request.

Also modify nlmsvc_unlock() to call the filesystem method if appropriate.

f812048020 lockd: always preallocate block in nlmsvc_lock()
Normally we could skip ever having to allocate a block in the case where
the client asks for a non-blocking lock, or asks for a blocking lock that
succeeds immediately.

However we're going to want to always look up a block first in order to
check whether we're revisiting a deferred lock call, and to be prepared to
handle the case where the filesystem returns -EINPROGRESS--in that case we
want to make sure the lock we've given the filesystem is the one embedded
in the block that we'll use to track the deferred request.

5ea0d75037 lockd: handle test_lock deferrals
Rewrite nlmsvc_testlock() to use the new asynchronous interface: instead of
immediately doing a posix_test_lock(), we first look for a matching block.
If the subsequent test_lock returns anything other than -EINPROGRESS, we
then remove the block we've found and return the results.

If it returns -EINPROGRESS, then we defer the lock request.

In the case where the block we find in the first step has B_QUEUED set,
we bypass the vfs_test_lock entirely, instead using the block to decide how
to respond:
with nlm_lck_denied if B_TIMED_OUT is set.
with nlm_granted if B_GOT_CALLBACK is set.
by dropping if neither B_TIMED_OUT nor B_GOT_CALLBACK is set

2bea90d43a SUNRPC: RPC buffer size estimates are too large
The RPC buffer size estimation logic in net/sunrpc/clnt.c always
significantly overestimates the requirements for the buffer size.
A little instrumentation demonstrated that in fact rpc_malloc was never
allocating the buffer from the mempool, but almost always called kmalloc.

To compute the size of the RPC buffer more precisely, split p_bufsiz into
two fields; one for the argument size, and one for the result size.

Then, compute the sum of the exact call and reply header sizes, and split
the RPC buffer precisely between the two. That should keep almost all RPC
buffers within the 2KiB buffer mempool limit.

And, we can finally be rid of RPC_SLACK_SPACE!

0b4d414714 [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctl
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.

I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.

So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future

cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,

ad06e4bd62 [PATCH] knfsd: SUNRPC: Add a function to format the address in an svc_rqst for printing
There are loads of places where the RPC server assumes that the rq_addr fields
contains an IPv4 address. Top among these are error and debugging messages
that display the server's IP address.

Let's refactor the address printing into a separate function that's smart
enough to figure out the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

482fb94e1b [PATCH] knfsd: SUNRPC: allow creating an RPC service without registering with portmapper
Sometimes we need to create an RPC service but not register it with the local
portmapper. NFSv4 delegation callback, for example.

Change the svc_makesock() API to allow optionally creating temporary or
permanent sockets, optionally registering with the local portmapper, and make
it return the ephemeral port of the new socket.

5cbded585d [PATCH] getting rid of all casts of k[cmz]alloc() calls
Run this:

	#!/bin/sh
	for f in $(grep -Erl "\([^\)]*\) *k[cmz]alloc" *) ; do
	  echo "De-casting $f..."
	  perl -pi -e "s/ ?= ?\([^\)]*\) *(k[cmz]alloc) *\(/ = \1\(/" $f
	done

And then go through and reinstate those cases where code is casting pointers
to non-pointers.

And then drop a few hunks which conflicted with outstanding work.

d343fce148 [PATCH] knfsd: Allow lockd to drop replies as appropriate
It is possible for the ->fopen callback from lockd into nfsd to find that an
answer cannot be given straight away (an upcall is needed) and so the request
has to be 'dropped', to be retried later. That error status is not currently
propagated back.

So:
Change nlm_fopen to return nlm error codes (rather than a private
protocol) and define a new nlm_drop_reply code.
Cause nlm_drop_reply to cause the rpc request to get rpc_drop_reply
  when this error comes back.
Cause svc_process to drop a request which returns a status of
  rpc_drop_reply.

4481d1038f [PATCH] knfsd: Fix bug in recent lockd patches that can cause reclaim to fail
When an nfs server shuts down, lockd needs to release all the locks even
though the client still holds them.

It should therefore not 'unmonitor' the clients, so that the files in nfs/sm
will still be there when the nfs server restarts, so that those clients will
be told to reclaim their locks.

However the hosts are fully unmonitored, so statd may well remove the files.

lockd has a test for 'sm_sticky' and avoid the unmonitor call if it is set,
but it is currently not set.

So set it when tearing down lockd.

460f5cac1e [PATCH] knfsd: export nsm_local_state to user space via sysctl
Every NLM call includes the client's NSM state. Currently, the Linux client
always reports 0 - which seems not to cause any problems, but is not what the
protocol says.

This patch exposes the kernel's internal variable to user space via a sysctl,
which can be set at system boot time by statd.
