If only linear modifier is advertised, since there are many drivers that
only linear supported, the DRM core should handle this rather than
open-coding in every driver. However, there are legacy drivers such as
radeon that do not support modifiers but infer the actual layout of the
underlying buffer. Therefore, a new flag fb_modifiers_not_supported is
introduced for these legacy drivers, and allow_fb_modifiers is replaced
with this new flag.

The current code assumes that the RGB444 and YUV444 formats are the
same, but the HDMI 2.0 specification states that:
The three DC_XXbit bits above only indicate support for RGB 4:4:4 at
that pixel size. Support for YCBCR 4:4:4 in Deep Color modes is
indicated with the DC_Y444 bit. If DC_Y444 is set, then YCBCR 4:4:4
is supported for all modes indicated by the DC_XXbit flags.
So if we have YUV444 support and any DC_XXbit flag set but the DC_Y444
flag isn't, we'll assume that we support that deep colour mode for
YUV444 which breaks the specification.
In order to fix this, let's split the edid_hdmi_dc_modes field in struct
drm_display_info into two fields, one for RGB444 and one for YUV444.

The drm_hdmi_avi_infoframe_colorspace() function actually sets the
colorimetry and extended_colorimetry fields in the hdmi_avi_infoframe
structure with DRM_MODE_COLORIMETRY_* values.
To make things worse, the hdmi_avi_infoframe structure also has a
colorspace field used to signal whether an RGB or YUV output is being
used.

Also add notes that for atomic drivers it's really somewhere else and
no longer in struct drm_crtc.
Maybe we should put a bigger warning here that this is confusing,
since the pixel format is a plane property, but the GAMMA_LUT property
is on the crtc. But I think we can fix this if/when someone finds a
need for a per-plane CLUT, since I'm not sure such hw even exists. I'm
also not sure whether even hardware with a CLUT and a full color
correction pipeline with degamm/cgm/gamma exists.
Motivated by comments from Geert that we have a gap here.

TTM takes full control over TTM_PL_SYSTEM placed buffers. This makes
driver internal usage of TTM_PL_SYSTEM prone to errors because it
requires the drivers to manually handle all interactions between TTM
which can swap out those buffers whenever it thinks it's the right
thing to do and driver.
CPU buffers which need to be fenced and shared with accelerators should
be placed in driver specific placements that can explicitly handle
CPU/accelerator buffer fencing.
Currently, apart, from things silently failing nothing is enforcing
that requirement which means that it's easy for drivers and new
developers to get this wrong. To avoid the confusion we can document
this requirement and clarify the solution.

The "nomodeset" kernel cmdline parameter is handled by the vgacon driver
but the exported vgacon_text_force() symbol is only used by DRM drivers.
It makes much more sense for the parameter logic to be in the subsystem
of the drivers that are making use of it.
Let's move the vgacon_text_force() function and related logic to the DRM
subsystem. While doing that, rename it to drm_firmware_drivers_only() and
make it return true if "nomodeset" was used and false otherwise. This is
a better description of the condition that the drivers are testing for.

Now that we've added support to i915 for controlling panel backlights that
need PWM to be enabled/disabled, let's finalize this and add support for
controlling brightness levels via PWM as well. This should hopefully put us
towards the path of supporting _ALL_ backlights via VESA's DPCD interface
which would allow us to finally start trusting the DPCD again.
Note however that we still don't enable using this by default on i915 when
it's not needed, primarily because I haven't yet had a chance to confirm if
it's safe to do this on the one machine in Intel's CI that had an issue
with this: samus-fi-bdw. I have done basic testing of this on other
machines though, by manually patching i915 to force it into PWM-only mode
on some of my laptops.

Change all GEM SHMEM object functions that receive a GEM object
of type struct drm_gem_object to expect an object of type
struct drm_gem_shmem_object instead.
This change reduces the number of upcasts from struct drm_gem_object

GEM SHMEM functions are called with the correct type.

The huge page functionality in TTM does not work safely because PUD and
PMD entries do not have a special bit.
get_user_pages_fast() considers any page that passed pmd_huge() as
usable:
if (unlikely(pmd_trans_huge(pmd) || pmd_huge(pmd) ||
pmd_devmap(pmd))) {
And vmf_insert_pfn_pmd_prot() unconditionally sets
entry = pmd_mkhuge(pfn_t_pmd(pfn, prot));
eg on x86 the page will be _PAGE_PRESENT | PAGE_PSE.
As such gup_huge_pmd() will try to deref a struct page:
head = try_grab_compound_head(pmd_page(orig), refs, flags);
and thus crash.
Thomas further notices that the drivers are not expecting the struct page
to be used by anything - in particular the refcount incr above will cause
them to malfunction.
Thus everything about this is not able to fully work correctly considering
GUP_fast. Delete it entirely. It can return someday along with a proper
PMD/PUD_SPECIAL bit in the page table itself to gate GUP_fast.

DPCD offsets depending on:
- Clock recovery vs. channel equalization
- DPRX vs. LTTPR
- 128b/132b vs. 8b/10b
- DPCD 1.4+ vs. earlier
Add helpers to get the correct delays in us, reading DPCD if
necessary. This is more straightforward than trying to retrofit the
existing helpers to take 128b/132b into account.
Having to pass in the DPCD receiver cap field seems unavoidable, because
reading it involves checking the revision and reading extended receiver
cap. So unfortunately the interface is mixed cached and read as needed.

On some new laptops the LCD panel has a builtin electronic privacy-screen.
We want to export this functionality as a property on the drm connector
object. But often this functionality is not exposed on the GPU but on some
other (ACPI) device.
This commit adds a privacy-screen class allowing the driver for these
other devices to register themselves as a privacy-screen provider; and
allowing the drm/kms code to get a privacy-screen provider associated
with a specific GPU/connector combo.
Changes in v2:
- Make CONFIG_DRM_PRIVACY_SCREEN a bool which controls if the drm_privacy
code gets built as part of the main drm module rather then making it
a tristate which builds its own module.
- Add a #if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_DRM_PRIVACY_SCREEN) check to
drm_privacy_screen_consumer.h and define stubs when the check fails.
Together these 2 changes fix several dependency issues.
- Remove module related code now that this is part of the main drm.ko
- Use drm_class as class for the privacy-screen devices instead of
adding a separate class for this

all possible enum values separated by commas in its output, so having a

all currently held locks using drm_modeset_backoff(). Failing to do so
will result in warnings and backtraces on the paths trying to lock a

For example, the patch [1] inadvertently dropped the return value check

drm/ttm: Refuse to fault (prime-) imported pages
we introduced the restriction that imported pages should not be directly
mappable through TTM(this also extends to userptr). In the next patch we
want to introduce a shmem_tt backend, which should follow all the
existing rules with TTM_PAGE_FLAG_EXTERNAL, since it will need to handle
swapping itself, but with the above mapping restriction lifted.

The drm_helper_hpd_irq_event() function is iterating over all the
connectors when an hotplug event is detected.
During that iteration, it will call each connector detect function and
figure out if its status changed.
Finally, if any connector changed, it will notify the user-space and the
clients that something changed on the DRM device.
This is supposed to be used for drivers that don't have a hotplug
interrupt for individual connectors. However, drivers that can use an
interrupt for a single connector are left in the dust and can either
reimplement the logic used during the iteration for each connector or
use that helper and iterate over all connectors all the time.
Since both are suboptimal, let's create a helper that will only perform
the status detection on a single connector.

Looking into this a bit more it turned out that there is
actually not that much missing to at least let the driver
compile on x86 as well.
So this patch replaces the use of phys_to_page() with the
open coded version and provides a dummy for of_drm_find_bridge().

It's hard for someone (like me) who's not following closely to know
what the suggested best practices are for error printing in DRM
drivers. Add some hints to the header file.
In general, my understanding is that:
* When possible we should be using a `struct drm_device` for logging
and recent patches have tried to make it more possible to access a
relevant `struct drm_device` in more places.
* For most cases when we don't have a `struct drm_device`, we no
longer bother with DRM-specific wrappers on the dev_...() functions
or pr_...() functions and just encourage drivers to use the normal
functions.
* For debug-level functions where we might want filtering based on a
category we'll still have DRM-specific wrappers, but we'll only
support passing a `struct drm_device`, not a `struct
device`. Presumably most of the cases where we want the filtering
are messages that happen while the system is in a normal running
state (AKA not during probe time) and we should have a `struct
drm_device` then. If we absolutely can't get a `struct drm_device`
then these functions begrudgingly accept NULL for the `struct
drm_device` and hopefully the awkwardness of having to manually pass
NULL will keep people from doing this unless absolutely necessary.

EDIDs have 32-bits worth of data which is intended to be used to
uniquely identify the make/model of a panel. This has historically
been used only internally in the EDID processing code to identify
quirks with panels.
We'd like to use this panel ID in panel drivers to identify which
panel is hooked up and from that information figure out power sequence
timings. Let's expose this information from the EDID code and also
allow it to be accessed early, before a connector has been created.
To make matching in the panel drivers code easier, we'll return the
panel ID as a 32-bit value. We'll provide some functions for
converting this value back and forth to something more human readable.

The VESA Organization Vendor-Specific Data Block, defined in VESA
DisplayID Standard v2.0, specifies the eDP Multi-SST Operation (MSO)
stream count and segment pixel overlap.
DisplayID v1.3 has Appendix B: DisplayID as an EDID Extension,
describing how DisplayID sections may be embedded in EDID extension
blocks. DisplayID v2.0 does not have such a section, perhaps implying
that DisplayID v2.0 data should not be included in EDID extensions, but
rather in a "pure" DisplayID structure at its own DDC address pair
A4h/A5h, as described in VESA E-DDC Standard v1.3 chapter 3.
However, in practice, displays out in the field have embedded DisplayID
v2.0 data blocks in EDID extensions, including, in particular, some eDP
MSO displays, where a pure DisplayID structure is not available at all.
Parse the MSO data from the DisplayID data block. Do it as part of

This is a very confusingly named function, because not just does it
init an object, it arms it and provides a point of no return for
pushing a job into the scheduler. It would be nice if that's a bit

helpers into the scheduler code, and that means drm_sched_job_init
must be called a lot earlier, without arming the job.

The buffer object argument to ttm_move_memcpy was only used to
determine whether the destination memory should be cleared only
or whether we should copy data. Replace it with a "clear" bool, and
update the callers.
The intention here is to be able to use ttm_move_memcpy() async under
a dma-fence as a fallback if an accelerated blit fails in a security-
critical path where data might leak if the blit is not properly
performed. For that purpose the bo is an unsuitable argument since
its relevant members might already have changed at call time.
Finally, update the ttm_move_memcpy kerneldoc that seems to have
ended up with a stale version.

Add a new drm_connector_oob_hotplug_event() function and
oob_hotplug_event drm_connector_funcs member.
On some hardware a hotplug event notification may come from outside the
display driver / device. An example of this is some USB Type-C setups
where the hardware muxes the DisplayPort data and aux-lines but does
not pass the altmode HPD status bit to the GPU's DP HPD pin.
In cases like this the new drm_connector_oob_hotplug_event() function can
be used to report these out-of-band events.
Changes in v2:
- Make drm_connector_oob_hotplug_event() take a fwnode as argument and
have it call drm_connector_find_by_fwnode() internally. This allows
making drm_connector_find_by_fwnode() a drm-internal function and
avoids code outside the drm subsystem potentially holding on the
a drm_connector reference for a longer period.
Changes in v3:
- Drop the data argument to the drm_connector_oob_hotplug_event

Add a fwnode pointer to struct drm_connector and register an acpi_bus_type
for the connectors with the ACPI subsystem (when CONFIG_ACPI is enabled).
The adding of the fwnode pointer allows drivers to associate a fwnode
that represents a connector with that connector.
When the new fwnode pointer points to an ACPI-companion, then the new
acpi_bus_type will cause the ACPI subsys to bind the device instantiated
for the connector with the fwnode by calling acpi_bind_one(). This will
result in a firmware_node symlink under /sys/class/card#-<connecter-name>/
which helps to verify that the fwnode-s and connectors are properly
matched.

We make the following changes to the documentation of drm leases to
make it easier to reason about their usage. In particular, we clarify
the lifetime and locking rules of lease fields in drm_master:
1. Make it clear that &drm_device.mode_config.idr_mutex protects the
lease idr and list structures for drm_master. The lessor field itself
doesn't need to be protected as it doesn't change after it's set in
drm_lease_create.
2. Add descriptions for the lifetime of lessors and leases.
3. Add an overview DOC: section in drm-uapi.rst that defines the
terminology for drm leasing, and explains how leases work and why
they're used.

There's two stages of manual upload/invalidate displays:
- just handling dirtyfb and uploading the entire fb all the time
- looking at damage clips
In the latter case we support it through fbdev emulation (with
fb_defio), atomic property, and with the dirtfy clip rects.
Make sure at least the atomic property is set up as the main official
interface for this. Ideally we'd also check that
drm_atomic_helper_dirtyfb() is used and that fbdev defio is set up,
but that's quite a bit harder to do. Ideas very much welcome.
From a cursor audit drivers seem to be getting this right mostly, but
better to make sure. At least no one is bypassing the accessor
function.

Implement helpers drm_gem_fb_begin_cpu_access() and _end_cpu_access(),
which call the rsp dma-buf functions for all GEM BOs of the given
framebuffer.
Calls to dma_buf_end_cpu_access() can return an error code on failure,
while drm_gem_fb_end_cpu_access() does not. The latter runs during DRM's
atomic commit or during cleanup. Both cases don't allow for errors, so

drm_file->master pointers should be protected by
drm_device.master_mutex or drm_file.master_lookup_lock when being
dereferenced.
However, in drm_lease.c, there are multiple instances where
drm_file->master is accessed and dereferenced while neither lock is
held. This makes drm_lease.c vulnerable to use-after-free bugs.
We address this issue in 2 ways:
1. Add a new drm_file_get_master() function that calls drm_master_get
on drm_file->master while holding on to
drm_file.master_lookup_lock. Since drm_master_get increments the
reference count of master, this prevents master from being freed until
we unreference it with drm_master_put.
2. In each case where drm_file->master is directly accessed and
eventually dereferenced in drm_lease.c, we wrap the access in a call
to the new drm_file_get_master function, then unreference the master
pointer once we are done using it.

Currently, drm_file.master pointers should be protected by
drm_device.master_mutex when being dereferenced. This is because
drm_file.master is not invariant for the lifetime of drm_file. If
drm_file is not the creator of master, then drm_file.is_master is
false, and a call to drm_setmaster_ioctl will invoke
drm_new_set_master, which then allocates a new master for drm_file and
puts the old master.
Thus, without holding drm_device.master_mutex, the old value of
drm_file.master could be freed while it is being used by another
concurrent process.
However, it is not always possible to lock drm_device.master_mutex to
dereference drm_file.master. Through the fbdev emulation code, this
might occur in a deep nest of other locks. But drm_device.master_mutex
is also the outermost lock in the nesting hierarchy, so this leads to
potential deadlocks.
To address this, we introduce a new spin lock at the bottom of the
lock hierarchy that only serializes drm_file.master. With this change,
the value of drm_file.master changes only when both
drm_device.master_mutex and drm_file.master_lookup_lock are
held. Hence, any process holding either of those locks can ensure that
the value of drm_file.master will not change concurrently.
Since no lock depends on the new drm_file.master_lookup_lock, when
drm_file.master is dereferenced, but drm_device.master_mutex cannot be
held, we can safely protect the master pointer with
drm_file.master_lookup_lock.

Return -ENOTTY from drm_ioctl() when userspace passes in a cmd number
which doesn't relate to the drm subsystem.
Glibc uses the TCGETS ioctl to implement isatty(), and without this
change isatty() returns it incorrectly returns true for drm devices.
To test run this command:

which shows "is a tty" without this patch.

It looks like the rule is that drm_kms_helper can call into drm, but
drm can't call into drm_kms_helper. That means we've got to move the

NOTE: as part of this, I didn't try to do any renames of the main

Some panels support backlight control over DP AUX channel using
VESA's standard backlight control interface.
Using new DRM eDP backlight helpers, add support to create and
register a backlight for those panels in drm_panel to simplify
the panel drivers.
The panel driver with access to "struct drm_dp_aux" can create and
register a backlight device using following code snippet in its
probe() function:
err = drm_panel_dp_aux_backlight(panel, aux);
if (err)
return err;
Then drm_panel will handle backlight_(enable|disable) calls
similar to the case when drm_panel_of_backlight() is used.
Currently, we are not supporting one feature where the source
device can combine the backlight brightness levels set through
DP AUX and the BL_PWM_DIM eDP connector pin. Since it's not
required for the basic backlight controls, it can be added later.

Mali Midgard/Bifrost GPUs have 3 hardware queues but only a global GPU
reset. This leads to extra complexity when we need to synchronize timeout
works with the reset work. One solution to address that is to have an
ordered workqueue at the driver level that will be used by the different
schedulers to queue their timeout work. Thanks to the serialization
provided by the ordered workqueue we are guaranteed that timeout
handlers are executed sequentially, and can thus easily reset the GPU
from the timeout handler without extra synchronization.

The drm_connector detect, drm_dp_aux transfer and mipi_dsi_host
operations typically require to access their underlying device to
perform what is expected of them.
However, there's no guarantee on the fact that the device has been
enabled through atomic_enable or similar that will usually power the
device. The access to an unpowered device is then an undefined behaviour
ranging from the access being ignored to a hard CPU hang.
Let's document that expectation to avoid as much as possible those

Historically "simple" eDP panels have been handled by panel-simple
which is a basic platform_device. In the device tree, the panel node
was at the top level and not connected to anything else.
Let's change it so that, instead, panels can be represented as being
children of the "DP AUX bus". Essentially we're saying that the
hierarchy that we're going to represent is the "control" connections
between devices. The DP AUX bus is a control bus provided by an eDP
controller (the parent) and consumed by a device like a panel (the
child).
The primary incentive here is to cleanly provide the panel driver the
ability to communicate over the AUX bus while handling lifetime issues
properly. The panel driver may want the AUX bus for controlling the
backlight or querying the panel's EDID.
The idea for this bus's design was hashed out over IRC [1].

etc. Any PWM-related portions of backlight control are explicitly left up
to the driver, as these will vary from platform to platform.
The only exception to this is the calculation of the PWM frequency
pre-divider value. This is because the only platform-specific information
required for this is the PWM frequency of the panel, which the driver is
expected to provide if available. The actual algorithm for calculating this
value is standard and is defined in the eDP specification from VESA.
Note that these helpers do not yet implement the full range of features
the VESA backlight interface provides, and only provide the following
functionality (all of which was already present in i915's DPCD backlight
support):
* Basic control of brightness levels
* Basic probing of backlight capabilities
* Helpers for enabling and disabling the backlight
v3:
* Split out changes to i915's backlight code to separate patches to make it
easier to review
v4:
* Style/spelling changes from Thomas Zimmermann
v5:
* Start using new drm_dbg_*() functions

If the bo is idle when calling ttm_bo_pipeline_gutting(), we unnecessarily
create a ghost object and push it out to delayed destroy.
Fix this by adding a path for idle, and document the function.
Also avoid having the bo end up in a bad state vulnerable to user-space
triggered kernel BUGs if the call to ttm_tt_create() fails.
Finally reuse ttm_bo_pipeline_gutting() in ttm_bo_evict().

Reading out of write-combining mapped memory is typically very slow
since the CPU doesn't prefetch. However some archs have special
instructions to do this.
So add a best-effort memcpy_from_wc taking dma-buf-map pointer
arguments that attempts to use a fast prefetching memcpy and
otherwise falls back to ordinary memcopies, taking the iomem tagging
into account.
The code is largely copied from i915_memcpy_from_wc.

The internal ttm_bo_util memcpy uses ioremap functionality, and while it
probably might be possible to use it for copying in- and out of
sglist represented io memory, using io_mem_reserve() / io_mem_free()
callbacks, that would cause problems with fault().
Instead, implement a method mapping page-by-page using kmap_local()
semantics. As an additional benefit we then avoid the occasional global
TLB flushes of ioremap() and consuming ioremap space, elimination of a
critical point of failure and with a slight change of semantics we could
also push the memcpy out async for testing and async driver development
purposes.
A special linear iomem iterator is introduced internally to mimic the
old ioremap behaviour for code-paths that can't immediately be ported
over. This adds to the code size and should be considered a temporary
solution.
Looking at the code we have a lot of checks for iomap tagged pointers.
Ideally we should extend the core memremap functions to also accept
uncached memory and kmap_local functionality. Then we could strip a
lot of code.

Having GEM buffers backed by non-coherent memory is interesting in the
particular case where it is faster to render to a non-coherent buffer
then sync the data cache, than to render to a write-combine buffer, and
(by extension) much faster than using a shadow buffer. This is true for
instance on some Ingenic SoCs, where even simple blits (e.g. memcpy)
are about three times faster using this method.
Add a 'map_noncoherent' flag to the drm_gem_cma_object structure, which
can be set by the drivers when they create the dumb buffer.
Since this really only applies to software rendering, disable this flag
as soon as the CMA objects are exported via PRIME.
v3: New patch. Now uses a simple 'map_noncoherent' flag to control how
the objects are mapped, and use the new dma_mmap_pages function.
v4: Make sure map_noncoherent is always disabled when creating GEM
objects meant to be used with dma-buf.

Platform devices might operate on firmware framebuffers, such as VESA or
EFI. Before a native driver for the graphics hardware can take over the
device, it has to remove any platform driver that operates on the firmware
framebuffer. Aperture helpers provide the infrastructure for platform
drivers to acquire firmware framebuffers, and for native drivers to remove
them later on.
It works similar to the related fbdev mechanism. During initialization, the
platform driver acquires the firmware framebuffer's I/O memory and provides
a callback to be removed. The native driver later uses this information to
remove any platform driver for it's framebuffer I/O memory.
The aperture removal code is integrated into the existing code for removing
conflicting framebuffers, so native drivers use it automatically.

[why]
DP 1.4a spec mandates that if DP_EXTENDED_RECEIVER_CAP_FIELD_PRESENT is
set, Extended Base Receiver Capability DPCD space must be used. Without
doing that, the three DPCD values that differ will be wrong, leading to
incorrect or limited functionality. MST link rate, for example, could
have a lower value. Also, Synaptics quirk wouldn't work out well when
Extended DPCD was not read, resulting in no DSC for such hubs.
[how]
Modify MST topology manager to use the values from Extended DPCD where
applicable.
To prevent regression on the sources that have a lower maximum link rate
capability than MAX_LINK_RATE from Extended DPCD, have the drivers
supply maximum lane count and rate at initialization time.
This also reverts commit 2dcab875e7 ("Revert drm/dp_mst: Retrieve
extended DPCD caps for topology manager"), brining the change back to the
original commit ad44c03208 ("drm/dp_mst: Retrieve extended DPCD caps for

entirely.

While this shouldn't really be something that happens all that often, since
we're going to be using the drm_dbg_* log helpers in DRM helpers it's
technically possible that a driver could use an AUX adapter before it's
been associated with it's respective drm_device. While drivers should take
care to avoid this, there's likely going to be situations where it's
difficult to workaround. And since other logging helpers in the kernel tend
to be OK with NULL pointers (for instance, passing a NULL pointer to a "%s"
argument for a printk-like function in the kernel doesn't break anything),
we should do the same for ours.

Since this is one of the few functions in drm_dp_mst_topology.c that
doesn't have any way of getting access to a drm_device, let's pass the
drm_dp_mst_topology_mgr down to this function so that it can use
drm_dbg_kms().

Since we're about to be using drm_dbg_*() throughout the DP helpers, we'll
need to be able to access the DRM device in the dual mode DP helpers as
well. Note however that since drm_dp_dual_mode_detect() can be called with
DDC adapters that aren't part of a drm_dp_aux struct, we need to pass down
the drm_device to these functions instead of using drm_dp_aux.

This is something that we've wanted for a while now: the ability to
actually look up the respective drm_device for a given drm_dp_aux struct.
This will also allow us to transition over to using the drm_dbg_*() helpers
for debug message printing, as we'll finally have a drm_device to reference
for doing so.
Note that there is one limitation with this - because some DP AUX adapters
exist as platform devices which are initialized independently of their
respective DRM devices, one cannot rely on drm_dp_aux->drm_dev to always be
non-NULL until drm_dp_aux_register() has been called. We make sure to point
this out in the documentation for struct drm_dp_aux.

While at it, replacing bit shit by BIT() macro and adding the version
some registers were added to eDP specification.
