The MTD subsystem has historically tried to be as configurable as possible. The
side-effect of this is that its configuration menu is rather large, and we are
gradually shrinking it. For example, we recently merged partitions support with
the mtdcore.
This patch does the next step - it merges the mtdchar module to mtdcore. And in
this case this is not only about eliminating too fine-grained separation and
simplifying the configuration menu. This is also about eliminating seemingly
useless kernel module.
Indeed, mtdchar is a module that allows user-space making use of MTD devices
via /dev/mtd* character devices. If users do not enable it, they simply cannot
use MTD devices at all. They cannot read or write the flash contents. Is it a
sane and useful setup? I believe not. And everyone just enables mtdchar.
Having mtdchar separate is also a little bit harmful. People sometimes miss the
fact that they need to enable an additional configuration option to have
user-space MTD interfaces, and then they wonder why on earth the kernel does
not allow using the flash? They spend time asking around.
Thus, let's just get rid of this module and make it part of mtd core.
Note, mtdchar had additional configuration option to enable OTP interfaces,
which are present on some flashes. I removed that option as well - it saves a
really tiny amount space.
[dwmw2: Strictly speaking, you can mount file systems on MTD devices just
fine without the mtdchar (or mtdblock) devices; you just can't do
other manipulations directly on the underlying device. But still I
agree that it makes sense to make this unconditional. And Yay! we
get to kill off an instance of checking CONFIG_foo_MODULE, which is
an abomination that should never happen.]

We have CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX, which three archs define to the string
"_". But Al Viro broke this in "consolidate cond_syscall and
SYSCALL_ALIAS declarations" (in linux-next), and he's not the first to
do so.
Using CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is awkward, since we usually just want to
prefix it so something. So various places define helpers which are
defined to nothing if CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX isn't set:
1) include/asm-generic/unistd.h defines __SYMBOL_PREFIX.
2) include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h defines VMLINUX_SYMBOL(sym)
3) include/linux/export.h defines MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX.
4) include/linux/kernel.h defines SYMBOL_PREFIX (which differs from #7)
5) kernel/modsign_certificate.S defines ASM_SYMBOL(sym)
6) scripts/modpost.c defines MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX
7) scripts/Makefile.lib defines SYMBOL_PREFIX on the commandline if
CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is set, so that we have a non-string version
for pasting.
(arch/h8300/include/asm/linkage.h defines SYMBOL_NAME(), too).
Let's solve this properly:
1) No more generic prefix, just CONFIG_HAVE_UNDERSCORE_SYMBOL_PREFIX.
2) Make linux/export.h usable from asm.
3) Define VMLINUX_SYMBOL() and VMLINUX_SYMBOL_STR().
4) Make everyone use them.

Currently cfi_cmdset_0002.c does not support PPB locking of sectors. This
patch adds support for this locking/unlocking mechanism. It is needed on
some platforms, since newer U-Boot versions do support this PPB locking
and protect for example their environment sector(s) this way.
This PPB locking/unlocking will be enabled for all devices supported by
cfi_cmdset_0002 reporting 8 in the CFI word 0x49 (Sector Protect/Unprotect
scheme).
Please note that PPB locking does support sector-by-sector locking. But
the whole chip can only be unlocked together. So unlocking one sector
will automatically unlock all sectors of this device. Because of this
chip limitation, the PPB unlocking function saves the current locking
status of all sectors before unlocking the whole device. After unlocking
the saved locking status is re-configured. This way only the addressed
sectors will be unlocked.
To selectively enable this advanced sector protection mechanism, the
device-tree property "use-advanced-sector-protection" has been created.
To enable support for this locking this property needs to be present in the
flash DT node. E.g.:
nor_flash@0,0 {
compatible = "amd,s29gl256n", "cfi-flash";
bank-width = <2>;
use-advanced-sector-protection;

When working on a problem with some flash chips that lock up during
write-buffer operations, I think there may be a bug in the linux
handling of chips using cfi_cmdset_0002.c.
The datasheets I have found for a number of these chips all specify that
when aborting a write-buffer command, it is not enough to use the
standard reset. Rather a "write-to-buffer-reset command" is needed.
This command is quite similar for all chips, the main variance seem to
be if the final 0xF0 can go to any address or must go to addr_unlock1.
The bug is then in the recovery handling when timing out at the end of
do_write_buffer, where using the normal reset command is not sufficient.
Without this change, if the write-buffer command fails then any
following operations on the flash also fail.

Unlocking may take up to 1.4 seconds on some Intel flashes. So
lets use a max. of 1.5 seconds (1500ms) as timeout.
See "Clear Block Lock-Bits Time" on page 40 in
"3 Volt Intel StrataFlash Memory" 28F128J3,28F640J3,28F320J3 manual
from February 2003
This patch also fixes some other problems with this timeout:
- Don't use HZ in timeout "calculation"!
While testing we noticed that an unlocking timeout occured with
HZ=1000 and didn't occur with HZ=300. This was because the
timeout parameter was calculated differently depending on the
HZ value. Now a fixed value of 1500ms is used.
- The last parameter of WAIT_TIMEOUT (defined to
inval_cache_and_wait_for_operation) has to be passed in
micro-seconds. So multiply the ms value with 1000 and not 100
to calculate this value.
- Use variable name "mdelay" instead of misleading "udelay".

The reason is that we are re-working the MTD API and from now on it is
an error to use MTD function pointers directly - we have a corresponding
API call for every pointer. By adding a leading "_" we achieve the following:
1. Make sure we convert every direct pointer users
2. A leading "_" suggests that this interface is internal and it becomes
less likely that people will use them directly
3. Make sure all the out-of-tree modules stop compiling and the owners

In the commit 08968041be
(mtd: cfi_cmdset_0002: make sector erase command variable)
introdused a field sector_erase_cmd. In the same commit initialisation
of cfi->sector_erase_cmd made in cfi_chip_setup()
(file drivers/mtd/chips/cfi_probe.c), so the CFI chip has no problem:
...
cfi->cfi_mode = CFI_MODE_CFI;
cfi->sector_erase_cmd = CMD(0x30);
...
But for the JEDEC chips this initialisation is not carried out,
so the JEDEC chips have sector_erase_cmd == 0.
This patch adds the missing initialisation.

exiting on error. This approach leaves place to add a call to a fixup

The use of a memcpy() during a spinlock operation will cause very long
thread context switch delays if the flash chip bandwidth is low and the
data to be copied large, because a spinlock will disable preemption.
For example: A flash with 6,5 MB/s bandwidth will cause under ubifs,
which request sometimes 128 KiB (the flash erase size), a preemption delay of
20 milliseconds. High priority threads will not be served during this
time, regardless whether this threads access the flash or not. This behavior
breaks real time.
The patch changes all the use of spin_lock operations for xxxx->mutex
into mutex operations, which is exact what the name says and means.
I have checked the code of the drivers and there is no use of atomic
pathes like interrupt or timers. The mtdoops facility will also not be used
by this drivers. So it is dave to replace the spin_lock against mutex.
There is no performance regression since the mutex is normally not
acquired.

Erase-suspend for writing is required to avoid blocking applications
that wish to write some data (to a NOR block other than the one being
erased). Particularly, it solves some huge delays that an application
(which writes to a UBIFS) will experience if UBI attaches to empty NOR
flash. In this case the UBI background thread will erase a lot of blocks
and the application can be blocked for minutes because of the "MTD/CFI
chip lock".
This feature has been disabled for years. Maybe this was because the old
code turned it on for erase-suspend read-only chips also
(cfip->EraseSuspend & 0x1). This is wrong and corrected now.

MTD internal API presently uses 32-bit values to represent
device size. This patch updates them to 64-bits but leaves
the external API unchanged. Extending the external API
is a separate issue for several reasons. First, no one
needs it at the moment. Secondly, whether the implementation
is done with IOCTLs, sysfs or both is still debated. Thirdly
external API changes require the internal API to be accepted
first.
Note that although the MTD API will be able to support 64-bit
device sizes, existing drivers do not and are not required
to do so, although NAND base has been updated.
In general, changing from 32-bit to 64-bit values cause little
or no changes to the majority of the code with the following
exceptions:
- printk message formats
- division and modulus of 64-bit values
- NAND base support
- 32-bit local variables used by mtdpart and mtdconcat
- naughtily assuming one structure maps to another

For "unlock" cycles to 16bit devices in 8bit compatibility mode we need
to use the byte addresses 0xaaa and 0x555. These effectively match
the word address 0x555 and 0x2aa, except the latter has its low bit set.
Most chips don't care about the value of the 'A-1' pin in x8 mode,
but some -- like the ST M29W320D -- do. So we need to be careful to
set it where appropriate.
cfi_send_gen_cmd is only ever passed addresses where the low byte
is 0x00, 0x55 or 0xaa. Of those, only addresses ending 0xaa are
affected by this patch, by masking in the extra low bit when the device

Timeouts are currently given by the typical operation time times 8.
It works in the general well-behaved case but not when an erase block is
failing. For erase operations, it seems that a failing erase block will
keep the device state machine in erasing state until the vendor
specified maximum timeout period has passed. By this time the driver
would have long since timed out, left erasing state and attempted
further operations which all fail. This patch implements timeouts using
values from the CFI Query structure when available.
The patch also sets a longer timeout for locking operations. The current
value used for locking/unlocking given by 1000000/HZ microseconds is too
short for devices like J3 and J5 Strataflash which have a typical clear
lock-bits time of 0.5 seconds.

So if we have one more "odd" chip - we just could add several lines to
qry_mode_on. Also using these functions remove unnecessary code
duplicaton in porbe procedure.
Currently there are two "odd" cases
1. Some old intel chips which require 0xFF before 0x98
2. ST M29DW chip which requires 0x98 to be sent at 0x555 (according to
CFI should be 0x55)
This patch is partialy based on the patch from Uwe

Now that we can tell when we have one of the newer DataFlash chips,
optionally expose the 128 bytes of OTP memory they provide. Tested
on at45db642 revision B and D chips.
Switch mtdchar over to a generic HAVE_MTD_OTP flag instead of adding
another #ifdef for each type of chip whose driver has OTP support.

The unlock_addr rework in kernel 2.6.25 breaks 16-bit SST chips. SST
39LF160 and SST 39VF1601 are both 16-bit only chip (do not have BYTE#
pin) and new uaddr value is not correct for them. Add
MTD_UADDR_0xAAAA_0x5555 for those chips. Tested with SST 39VF1601
chip.

Existing CFI driver has problems with excessive writes during erase.
If CFI driver does many writes during one erase cycle we may face the
messages with -ETIMEO error on erase operation. It may cause the
following data corruption and kernel panics.
The reason of the issue is related to specifics of suspend operation:
if we write to flash during erase, suspend operation will cost some time
to erase procedure (for P30 it could be significant). In current version of
cfi driver the problem of many suspends is partially workarounded by adding
some time reserv to any operation (8xerase_time) but if we have many writes
during one erase the problem appears.
This patch detects the suspend and resets timer if suspend occured. It
has been well verified on different chips. No problems were found.
Could you please include the patch as it is simple and fixes bad issue.

This is a known erratum confirmed by Spansion. I have an errata document,
but I can't find a link to it anywhere on their site to include here.
Some of the S29GL064N chips report 64 sectors when they should report 128,
and some of S29GL032N chips report 127 sectors when they should report 63.
Note that when the chip dies are fixed by Spansion, they will still have
the same id. The fix is done in such a way that it won't affect corrected
chips.
The fixups use the extended id made available by a previous patch. Without
that, virtually all newer AMD/Spansion chips will have the same ID (0x227e)
and it's not possible to apply the fixup to the correct chips.

AMD/Spansion use a device id of 0x7e to indicate an extended device is
present at offset 0xe and 0xf in the query data.
I've verified with Spansion that all their chips (mfr == 0x01) with an id
of 0x7e use it to indicate an extended id is present. What's more, there
are no chips with a NON-extended id that is the same as a different chip's
extended id. In other words, when the extended ID is present, one can
replace the normal id with the extended id without losing any information.
Which is what I've done.

cfi_amdstd_sync() and cfi_staa_sync() call schedule() without changing task's
state appropriately.
In case of e.g. chip->state == FL_ERASING, cfi_*_sync() will be busy-looping

THe CFI driver in 2.6.24 kernel is broken. Not so intensive read/write
operations cause incomplete writes which lead to kernel panics in JFFS2.
We investigated the issue - it is caused by bug in FL_SHUTDOWN parsing code.
Sometimes chip returns -EIO as if it is in FL_SHUTDOWN state when it should
wait in FL_PONT (error in order of conditions).
The following patch fixes the bug in state parsing code of CFI. Also I've
added comments to notify developers if they want to add new case in future.
