video/aperture: Drop primary argument
With the preceding patches it's become defunct. Also I'm about to add a different boolean argument, so it's better to keep the confusion down to the absolute minimum. v2: Since the hypervfb patch got droppped (it's only a pci device for gen1 vm, not for gen2) there is one leftover user in an actual driver left to touch. v4: - fixes to commit message - fix Daniel's S-o-b address v5: - add back an S-o-b tag with Daniel's Intel address Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Cc: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Cc: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Cc: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Cc: linux-fbdev@vger.kernel.org Cc: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@linux.intel.com> Cc: Maxime Ripard <mripard@kernel.org> Cc: "K. mm, treewide: redefine MAX_ORDER sanely
MAX_ORDER currently defined as number of orders page allocator supports: user can ask buddy allocator for page order between 0 and MAX_ORDER-1. This definition is counter-intuitive and lead to number of bugs all over the kernel. Change the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive: the range of orders user can ask from buddy allocator is 0..MAX_ORDER now. Hopefully for 6.3 we will be able to line up a driver to use it. In drivers land, i915 enables DG2 support by default now, and nouveau has a big stability refactoring and initial ampere support, AMD includes new hw IP support and should build on ARM again. There is also an ofdrm driver to take over offb on platforms it's used. Stuff outside my tree, the dma-buf patches hit a few places, the vc4 firmware changes also do, and i915 has some interactions with MEI for discrete GPUs. drivers: hv, hyperv_fb: Untangle and refactor Hyper-V panic notifiers
Currently Hyper-V guests are among the most relevant users of the panic infrastructure, like panic notifiers, kmsg dumpers, etc. The reasons rely both in cleaning-up procedures (closing hypervisor <-> guest connection, disabling some paravirtualized timer) as well as to data collection (sending panic information to the hypervisor) and framebuffer management. The thing is: some notifiers are related to others, ordering matters, some functionalities are duplicated and there are lots of conditionals behind sending panic information to the hypervisor. As part of an effort to clean-up the panic notifiers mechanism and better document things, we hereby address some of the issues/complexities of Hyper-V panic handling through the following changes: (a) We have die and panic notifiers on vmbus_drv.c and both have goals of sending panic information to the hypervisor, though the panic notifier is also responsible for a cleaning-up procedure. This commit clears the code by splitting the panic notifier in two, one for closing the vmbus connection whereas the other is only for sending panic info to hypervisor. With that, it was possible to merge the die and panic notifiers in a single/well-documented function, and clear some conditional complexities on sending such information to the hypervisor. (b) There is a Hyper-V framebuffer panic notifier, which relies in doing a vmbus operation that demands a valid connection. So, we must order this notifier with the panic notifier from vmbus_drv.c, to guarantee that the framebuffer code executes before the vmbus connection is unloaded. Also, this commit removes a useless header. Although there is code rework and re-ordering, we expect that this change has no functional regressions but instead optimize the path and increase panic reliability on Hyper-V. This was tested on Hyper-V with success. Cc: Andrea Parri (Microsoft) <parri.andrea@gmail.com> Cc: Dexuan Cui <decui@microsoft.com> Cc: Haiyang Zhang <haiyangz@microsoft.com> Cc: "K. Y. video: hyperv_fb: Avoid taking busy spinlock on panic path
The Hyper-V framebuffer code registers a panic notifier in order to try updating its fbdev if the kernel crashed. The notifier callback is straightforward, but it calls the vmbus_sendpacket() routine eventually, and such function takes a spinlock for the ring buffer operations. Panic path runs in atomic context, with local interrupts and preemption disabled, and all secondary CPUs shutdown. That said, taking a spinlock might cause a lockup if a secondary CPU was disabled with such lock taken. Fix it here by checking if the ring buffer spinlock is busy on Hyper-V framebuffer panic notifier; if so, bail-out avoiding the potential lockup scenario. fbdev: Add support for the nomodeset kernel parameter
Support the kernel's nomodeset parameter for all PCI-based fbdev drivers that use aperture helpers to remove other, hardware-agnostic graphics drivers. The parameter is a simple way of using the firmware-provided scanout buffer if the hardware's native driver is broken. The same effect could be achieved with per-driver options, but the importance of the graphics output for many users makes a single, unified approach worthwhile. With nomodeset specified, the fbdev driver module will not load. This unifies behavior with similar DRM drivers. In DRM helpers, modules first check the nomodeset parameter before registering the PCI driver. As fbdev has no such module helpers, we have to modify each driver individually. The name 'nomodeset' is slightly misleading, but has been chosen for historical reasons. Several drivers implemented it before it became a general option for DRM. So keeping the existing name was preferred over introducing a new one. v2: * print a warning if a driver does not init (Helge) * wrap video_firmware_drivers_only() in helper Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221111133024.9897-3-tzimmermann@suse.de |

PCI: Move PCI_VENDOR_ID_MICROSOFT/PCI_DEVICE_ID_HYPERV_VIDEO definitions to pci_ids.h

fbdev: Use pageref offset for deferred-I/O writeback
Use pageref->offset instead of page->index for deferred-I/O writeback where appropriate. Distinguishes between file-mapping offset and video- memory offset. While at it, also remove unnecessary references to struct page. Fbdev's deferred-I/O code uses the two related page->index and pageref->offset. The former is the page offset in the mapped file, the latter is the byte offset in the video memory (or fbdev screen buffer). It's the same value for fbdev drivers, but for DRM the values can be different. Because GEM buffer objects are mapped at an offset in the DRM device file, page->index has this offset added to it as well. We currently don't hit this case in DRM, because all affected mappings of GEM memory are performed with an internal, intermediate shadow buffer. The value of page->index is required by page_mkclean(), which we call to reset the mappings during the writeback phase of the deferred I/O. The value of pageref->offset is for conveniently getting an offset into video memory in fb helpers. v4: * fix commit message (Javier) Suggested-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20220429100834.18898-6-tzimmermann@suse.de |

fbdev: Rename pagelist to pagereflist for deferred I/O
Rename various instances of pagelist to pagereflist. The list now stores pageref structures, so the new name is more appropriate. In their write-back helpers, several fbdev drivers refer to the pageref list in struct fb_deferred_io instead of using the one supplied as argument to the function. Convert them over to the supplied one. It's the same instance, so no change of behavior occurs. v4: * fix commit message (Javier) Suggested-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20220429100834.18898-5-tzimmermann@suse.de |

fbdev: Track deferred-I/O pages in pageref struct
Store the per-page state for fbdev's deferred I/O in struct fb_deferred_io_pageref. Maintain a list of pagerefs for the pages that have to be written back to video memory. Update all affected drivers. As with pages before, fbdev acquires a pageref when an mmaped page of the framebuffer is being written to. It holds the pageref in a list of all currently written pagerefs until it flushes the written pages to video memory. Writeback occurs periodically. After writeback fbdev releases all pagerefs and builds up a new dirty list until the next writeback occurs. Using pagerefs has a number of benefits. For pages of the framebuffer, the deferred I/O code used struct page.lru as an entry into the list of dirty pages. The lru field is owned by the page cache, which makes deferred I/O incompatible with some memory pages (e.g., most notably DRM's GEM SHMEM allocator). struct fb_deferred_io_pageref now provides an entry into a list of dirty framebuffer pages, freeing lru for use with the page cache. Drivers also assumed that struct page.index is the page offset into the framebuffer. This is not true for DRM buffers, which are located at various offset within a mapped area. struct fb_deferred_io_pageref explicitly stores an offset into the framebuffer. struct page.index is now only the page offset into the mapped area. These changes will allow DRM to use fbdev deferred I/O without an intermediate shadow buffer. v3: * use pageref->offset for sorting * fix grammar in comment v2: * minor fixes in commit message Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20220429100834.18898-3-tzimmermann@suse.de |

fbdev: Put mmap for deferred I/O into drivers
The fbdev mmap function fb_mmap() unconditionally overrides the driver's implementation if deferred I/O has been activated. This makes it hard to implement mmap with anything but a vmalloc()'ed software buffer. That is specifically a problem for DRM, where video memory is maintained by a memory manager. video: hyperv_fb: Fix validation of screen resolution
In the WIN10 version of the Synthetic Video protocol with Hyper-V,
Hyper-V reports a list of supported resolutions as part of the protocol
negotiation. The driver calculates the maximum width and height from
the list of resolutions, and uses those maximums to validate any screen
resolution specified in the video= option on the kernel boot line.
This method of validation is incorrect. For example, the list of
supported resolutions could contain 1600x1200 and 1920x1080, both of
which fit in an 8 Mbyte frame buffer. But calculating the max width
and height yields 1920 and 1200, and 1920x1200 resolution does not fit
in an 8 Mbyte frame buffer. Unfortunately, this resolution is accepted,
causing a kernel fault when the driver accesses memory outside the
frame buffer.
Instead, validate the specified screen resolution by calculating
its size, and comparing against the frame buffer size. Delete the
code for calculating the max width and height from the list of
resolutions, since these max values have no use. Also add the
frame buffer size to the info message to aid in understanding why
a resolution might be rejected.

There are several purposes of doing this: - dropping dependency in bug.h - dropping a loop by moving out panic_notifier.h - unload kernel.h from something which has its own domain At the same time convert users tree-wide to use new headers, although for the time being include new header back to kernel.h to avoid twisted indirected includes for existing users. video: hyperv_fb: Fix the cache type when mapping the VRAM
x86 Hyper-V used to essentially always overwrite the effective cache type
of guest memory accesses to WB. This was problematic in cases where there
is a physical device assigned to the VM, since that often requires that
the VM should have control over cache types. Thus, on newer Hyper-V since
2018, Hyper-V always honors the VM's cache type, but unexpectedly Linux VM
users start to complain that Linux VM's VRAM becomes very slow, and it
turns out that Linux VM should not map the VRAM uncacheable by ioremap().
Fix this slowness issue by using ioremap_cache().
On ARM64, ioremap_cache() is also required as the host also maps the VRAM
cacheable, otherwise VM Connect can't display properly with ioremap() or
ioremap_wc().
With this change, the VRAM on new Hyper-V is as fast as regular RAM, so
it's no longer necessary to use the hacks we added to mitigate the
slowness, i.e. we no longer need to allocate physical memory and use
it to back up the VRAM in Generation-1 VM, and we also no longer need to
allocate physical memory to back up the framebuffer in a Generation-2 VM
and copy the framebuffer to the real VRAM. A further big change will
address these for v5.11.

video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Use physical memory for fb on HyperV Gen 1 VMs.
On Hyper-V, Generation 1 VMs can directly use VM's physical memory for their framebuffers. This can improve the efficiency of framebuffer and overall performence for VM. The physical memory assigned to framebuffer must be contiguous. We use CMA allocator to get contiguouse physicial memory when the framebuffer size is greater than 4MB. For size under 4MB, we use alloc_pages to achieve this. To enable framebuffer memory allocation from CMA, supply a kernel parameter to give enough space to CMA allocator at boot time. For example: cma=130m This gives 130MB memory to CAM allocator that can be allocated to framebuffer. If this fails, we fall back to the old way of using mmio for framebuffer. video: hyperv_fb: Fix hibernation for the deferred IO feature
fb_deferred_io_work() can access the vmbus ringbuffer by calling fbdefio->deferred_io() -> synthvid_deferred_io() -> synthvid_update(). Because the vmbus ringbuffer is inaccessible between hvfb_suspend() and hvfb_resume(), we must cancel info->deferred_work before calling vmbus_close() and then reschedule it after we reopen the channel in hvfb_resume(). video: constify fb ops across all drivers
Now that the fbops member of struct fb_info is const, we can start making the ops const as well. This does not cover all drivers; some actually modify the fbops struct, for example to adjust for different configurations, and others do more involved things that I'd rather not touch in practically obsolete drivers. Mostly this is the low hanging fruit where we can add "const" and be done with it. v3: - un-constify atyfb, mb862xx, nvidia and uvesabf (0day) v2: - fix typo (Christophe de Dinechin) - use "static const" instead of "const static" in mx3fb.c - also constify smscufx.c Cc: linux-fbdev@vger.kernel.org Reviewed-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Jani Nikula <jani.nikula@intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/ce67f14435f3af498f2e8bf35ce4be11f7504132.1575390740.git.jani.nikula@intel.com |

video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Support deferred IO for Hyper-V frame buffer driver
Without deferred IO support, hyperv_fb driver informs the host to refresh the entire guest frame buffer at fixed rate, e.g. at 20Hz, no matter there is screen update or not. This patch supports deferred IO for screens in graphics mode and also enables the frame buffer on-demand refresh. The highest refresh rate is still set at 20Hz. Currently Hyper-V only takes a physical address from guest as the starting address of frame buffer. This implies the guest must allocate contiguous physical memory for frame buffer. In addition, Hyper-V Gen 2 VMs only accept address from MMIO region as frame buffer address. Due to these limitations on Hyper-V host, we keep a shadow copy of frame buffer in the guest. This means one more copy of the dirty rectangle inside guest when doing the on-demand refresh. This can be optimized in the future with help from host. For now the host performance gain from deferred IO outweighs the shadow copy impact in the guest. drivers:hv: Modify hv_vmbus to search for all MMIO ranges available.
This patch changes the logic in hv_vmbus to record all of the ranges in the VM's firmware (BIOS or UEFI) that offer regions of memory-mapped I/O space for use by paravirtual front-end drivers. The old logic just found one range above 4GB and called it good. This logic will find any ranges above 1MB. It would have been possible with this patch to just use existing resource allocation functions, rather than keep track of the entire set of Hyper-V related MMIO regions in VMBus. This strategy, however, is not sufficient when the resource allocator needs to be aware of the constraints of a Hyper-V virtual machine, which is what happens in the next patch in the series. So this first patch exists to show the first steps in reworking the MMIO allocation paths for Hyper-V front-end drivers. Signed-off-by: Jake Oshins <jakeo@microsoft.com> Signed-off-by: K. Y.
