sysctl-6.7-rc1
To help make the move of sysctls out of kernel/sysctl.c not incur a size penalty sysctl has been changed to allow us to not require the sentinel, the final empty element on the sysctl array. Joel Granados has been doing all this work. On the v6.6 kernel we got the major infrastructure changes required to support this. For v6.7-rc1 we have all arch/ and drivers/ modified to remove the sentinel. Both arch and driver changes have been on linux-next for a bit less than a month. It is worth re-iterating the value: - this helps reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory consumed by the kernel by about ~64 bytes per array - the extra 64-byte penalty is no longer inncurred now when we move sysctls out from kernel/sysctl.c to their own files For v6.8-rc1 expect removal of all the sentinels and also then the unneeded check for procname == NULL. The last 2 patches are fixes recently merged by Krister Johansen which allow us again to use softlockup_panic early on boot. This used to work but the alias work broke it. This is useful for folks who want to detect softlockups super early rather than wait and spend money on cloud solutions with nothing but an eventual hung kernel. Although this hadn't gone through linux-next it's also a stable fix, so we might as well roll through the fixes now. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJGBAABCgAwFiEENnNq2KuOejlQLZofziMdCjCSiKcFAmVCqKsSHG1jZ3JvZkBr ZXJuZWwub3JnAAoJEM4jHQowkoinEgYQAIpkqRL85DBwems19Uk9A27lkctwZ6Fc HdslQCObQTsbuKVimZFP4IL2beUfUE0cfLZCXlzp+4nRDOf6vyhyf3w19jPQtI0Q YdqwTk9y6G5VjDsb35QK0+UBloY/kZ1H3/LW4uCwjXTuksUGmWW2Qvey35696Scv hDMLADqKQmdpYxLUaNi9QyYbEAjYtOai2ezg3+i7hTG168t1k/Ab2BxIFrPVsCR2 FAiq05L4ugWjNskdsWBjck05JZsx9SK/qcAxpIPoUm4nGiFNHApXE0E0hs3vsnmn WIHIbxCQw8ZlUDlmw4S+0YH3NFFzFbWfmW8k2b0f2qZTJm/rU4KiJfcJVknkAUVF raFox6XDW0AUQ9L/NOUJ9ip5rup57GcFrMYocdJ3PPAvvmHKOb1D1O741p75RRcc 9j7zwfIRrzjPUqzhsQS/GFjdJu3lJNmEBK1AcgrVry6WoItrAzJHKPPDC7TwaNmD eXpjxMl1sYzzHqtVh4hn+xkUYphj/6gTGMV8zdo+/FopFswgeJW9G8kHtlEWKDPk MRIKwACmfetP6f3ngHunBg+BOipbjCANL7JI0nOhVOQoaULxCCPx+IPJ6GfSyiuH AbcjH8DGI7fJbUkBFoF0dsRFZ2gH8ds1PYMbWUJ6x3FtuCuv5iIuvQYoaWU6itm7 6f0KvCogg0fU =Qf50 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'sysctl-6.7-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux Pull sysctl updates from Luis Chamberlain: "To help make the move of sysctls out of kernel/sysctl.c not incur a size penalty sysctl has been changed to allow us to not require the sentinel, the final empty element on the sysctl array. sgi-xp: Remove the now superfluous sentinel element from ctl_table array
This commit comes at the tail end of a greater effort to remove the empty elements at the end of the ctl_table arrays (sentinels) which will reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory bloat by ~64 bytes per sentinel (further information Link : https://lore.kernel.org/all/ZO5Yx5JFogGi%2FcBo@bombadil.infradead.org/) Remove sentinel from xpc_sys_xpc_hb and xpc_sys_xpc Signed-off-by: Joel Granados <j.granados@samsung.com> Signed-off-by: Luis Chamberlain <mcgrof@kernel.org> |

arch: Remove Itanium (IA-64) architecture
The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow once the kernel support is removed. sgi-xp: simplify sysctl registration
Although this driver is a good use case for having a directory that is not other directories and then subdirectories with more entries, the usage of register_sysctl_table() can recurse and increases complexity so to avoid that just split out the registration to each directory with its own entries. register_sysctl_table() is a deprecated compatibility wrapper. register_sysctl() can do the directory creation for you so just use that. sgi-xpc: Replace deprecated CPU-hotplug functions.
The functions get_online_cpus() and put_online_cpus() have been deprecated during the CPU hotplug rework. They map directly to cpus_read_lock() and cpus_read_unlock(). Replace deprecated CPU-hotplug functions with the official version. The behavior remains unchanged. misc/sgi-xp: Replace in_interrupt() usage
The usage of in_interrupt() in xpc_partition_disengaged() is clearly intended to avoid canceling the timeout timer when the function is invoked from the timer callback. While in_interrupt() is deprecated and ill defined as it does not provide what the name suggests it catches the intended case. Add an argument to xpc_partition_disengaged() which is true if called from timer and otherwise false. Use del_timer_sync() instead of del_singleshot_timer_sync() which is the same thing. Note: This does not prevent reentrancy into the function as the function has no concurrency control and timer callback and regular task context callers can happen concurrently on different CPUs or the timer can interrupt the task context before it is able to cancel it. While the only driver which is providing the arch_xpc_ops callbacks (xpc_uv) seems not to have a reentrancy problem and the only negative effect would be a double dev_info() entry in dmesg, the whole mechanism is conceptually broken. But that's not subject of this cleanup endeavour and left as an exercise to the folks who might have interest to make that code fully correct. Char/Misc driver patches for 5.4-rc1
Here is the big char/misc driver pull request for 5.4-rc1. As has been happening in previous releases, more and more individual driver subsystem trees are ending up in here. Now if that is good or bad I can't tell, but hopefully it makes your life easier as it's more of an aggregation of trees together to one merge point for you. Anyway, lots of stuff in here: - habanalabs driver updates - thunderbolt driver updates - misc driver updates - coresight and intel_th hwtracing driver updates - fpga driver updates - extcon driver updates - some dma driver updates - char driver updates - android binder driver updates - nvmem driver updates - phy driver updates - parport driver fixes - pcmcia driver fix - uio driver updates - w1 driver updates - configfs fixes - other assorted driver updates All of these have been in linux-next for a long time with no reported issues. ia64: remove support for machvecs
The only thing remaining of the machvecs is a few checks if we are running on an SGI UV system. Replace those with the existing is_uv_system() check that has been rewritten to simply check the OEM ID directly. That leaves us with a generic kernel that is as fast as the previous DIG/ZX1/UV kernels, but can support all hardware. Support for UV and the HP SBA IOMMU is now optional based on new config options. sgi-xpc: Use GFP_ATOMIC for kmalloc in atomic context.
xpc_send_activate_IRQ_uv is called from <-xpc_send_activate_IRQ_part_uv <-xpc_indicate_partition_disengaged_uv (xpc_arch_ops.indicate_partition_disengaged) <-xpc_die_deactivate <-xpc_system_die xpc_system_die is registered by atomic_notifier_chain_register, which indicates xpc_system_die may be called in atomic context. So the kmalloc in xpc_send_activate_IRQ_uv may be in atomic context. Use GFP_ATOMIC instead of GFP_KERNEL in kmalloc. The static xpc_arch_operations structure xpc_arch_ops_uv is only copied into the structure xpc_arch_ops, after which it is never modified; nor is it used in any other way. misc: sgi-xp: Properly initialize buf in xpc_get_rsvd_page_pa
Clang warns:
drivers/misc/sgi-xp/xpc_partition.c:73:14: warning: variable 'buf' is
uninitialized when used within its own initialization [-Wuninitialized]

~~~ ^~~
1 warning generated.
Arnd's explanation during review:
/*
* Returns the physical address of the partition's reserved page through
* an iterative number of calls.
*
* On first call, 'cookie' and 'len' should be set to 0, and 'addr'
* set to the nasid of the partition whose reserved page's address is
* being sought.
* On subsequent calls, pass the values, that were passed back on the
* previous call.
*
* While the return status equals SALRET_MORE_PASSES, keep calling
* this function after first copying 'len' bytes starting at 'addr'
* into 'buf'. Once the return status equals SALRET_OK, 'addr' will
* be the physical address of the partition's reserved page. If the
* return status equals neither of these, an error as occurred.
*/
static inline s64
sn_partition_reserved_page_pa(u64 buf, u64 *cookie, u64 *addr, u64 *len)
so *len is set to zero on the first call and tells the bios how many
bytes are accessible at 'buf', and it does get updated by the BIOS to
tell us how many bytes it needs, and then we allocate that and try again.
mm: replace all open encodings for NUMA_NO_NODE
Patch series "Replace all open encodings for NUMA_NO_NODE", v3. All these places for replacement were found by running the following grep patterns on the entire kernel code. Please let me know if this might have missed some instances. This might also have replaced some false positives. I will appreciate suggestions, inputs and review. 1. git grep "nid == -1" 2. git grep "node == -1" 3. git grep "nid = -1" 4. git grep "node = -1" This patch (of 2): At present there are multiple places where invalid node number is encoded as -1. Even though implicitly understood it is always better to have macros in there. Replace these open encodings for an invalid node number with the global macro NUMA_NO_NODE. This helps remove NUMA related assumptions like 'invalid node' from various places redirecting them to a common definition. treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This patch replaces cases of: kzalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kcalloc(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. This allows to use a single timer for multiple timeout requirements w/o caring about the first expiry time at the call site. - A new NMI safe accessor to clock real time for the printk timestamp work. Can be used by tracing, perf as well if required. - A large number of timer setup conversions from Kees which got collected here because either maintainers requested so or they simply got ignored. As Kees pointed out already there are a few trivial merge conflicts and some redundant commits which was unavoidable due to the size of this conversion effort. - Avoid a redundant iteration in the timer wheel softirq processing. - Provide a mechanism to treat RTC implementations depending on their hardware properties, i.e. don't inflict the write at the 0.5 seconds boundary which originates from the PC CMOS RTC to all RTCs. No functional change as drivers need to be updated separately. - The usual small updates to core code clocksource drivers. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. mm: fix GFP_THISNODE callers and clarify
GFP_THISNODE is for callers that implement their own clever fallback to remote nodes. It restricts the allocation to the specified node and does not invoke reclaim, assuming that the caller will take care of it when the fallback fails, e.g. through a subsequent allocation request without GFP_THISNODE set. However, many current GFP_THISNODE users only want the node exclusive aspect of the flag, without actually implementing their own fallback or triggering reclaim if necessary. This results in things like page migration failing prematurely even when there is easily reclaimable memory available, unless kswapd happens to be running already or a concurrent allocation attempt triggers the necessary reclaim. Convert all callsites that don't implement their own fallback strategy to __GFP_THISNODE. This restricts the allocation a single node too, but at the same time allows the allocator to enter the slowpath, wake kswapd, and invoke direct reclaim if necessary, to make the allocation happen when memory is full. sgi-xp: open-code interruptible_sleep_on_timeout
interruptible_sleep_on_timeout is deprecated and going away soon. The use in the sgi-xp driver leaves me puzzled, so I'd prefer not to touch it. This patch replaces it with an open-coded prepare_to_wait and finish_wait pair, which should be completely equivalent, so it doesn't fix an existing race, but lets us get away with removing the function so we can not get any new users. In order to remove the typical sleep_on race, one would have to replace the call with wait_event_interruptible_timeout and add a condition to wait for. The fact that there is a one-jiffy timeout suggests that we don't actually expect to get woken up properly and the caller just uses this as a short sleeping function if it doesn't wake up properly. SGI-XP: handle non-fatal traps
We found a user code which was raising a divide-by-zero trap. That trap would lead to XPC connections between system-partitions being torn down due to the die_chain notifier callouts it received. This also revealed a different issue where multiple callers into xpc_die_deactivate() would all attempt to do the disconnect in parallel which would sometimes lock up but often overwhelm the console on very large machines as each would print at least one line of output at the end of the deactivate. I reviewed all the users of the die_chain notifier and changed the code to ignore the notifier callouts for reasons which will not actually lead to a system to continue on to call die(). drivers/misc/sgi-xp/xpc_uv.c: SGI XPC fails to load when cpu 0 is out of IRQ resources
On many of our larger systems, CPU 0 has had all of its IRQ resources consumed before XPC loads. Worst cases on machines with multiple 10 GigE cards and multiple IB cards have depleted the entire first socket of IRQs. This patch makes selecting the node upon which IRQs are allocated (as well as all the other GRU Message Queue structures) specifiable as a module load param and has a default behavior of searching all nodes/cpus for an available resources. sgi-xp: nested calls to spin_lock_irqsave()
The code here has a nested spin_lock_irqsave(). It's not needed since IRQs are already disabled and it causes a problem because it means that IRQs won't be enabled again at the end. The second call to spin_lock_irqsave() will overwrite the value of irq_flags and we can't restore the proper settings.
