Remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operations from frame buffer layer.
They are used only in two drivers:
1. savagefb - and cause bug #11248
2. uvesafb
Usage of these operations is misunderstood in both drivers so kill these
operations, fix the bug #11248 and avoid confusion in the future.
Tested on Savage 3D/MV card and the patch fixes the bug #11248.
The frame buffer layer uses these funtions during switch between graphics
and text mode of the console, but these drivers saves state before
switching of the frame buffer (in the fb_open) and after releasing it (in
the fb_release). This defeats the purpose of these operations.

More aggressive DMA mapping debugging has uncovered a long-standing
buglet in the way that the sh_mobile_lcdcfb driver implements its
deferred I/O callback. When used as a console driver the acceleration
routines are called by the kernel which subsequently cause the deferred
I/O work to be scheduled, resulting in the deferred I/O callback being
entered without any dirty pages on the pagelist (the normal case for
userspace accesses). It's also possible to get in to this situation via
explicit calling of fsync() when nothing has dirtied the region.
Unfortunately it's not sufficient to skip over the callback when the
pagelist is empty given the console driver use case, so instead the
callback has to conditionalize the work for panel updates and DMA
mapping depending on whether anything is resident on the pagelist or
not.

fbdev: add mutex for fb_mmap locking
In which a mutex was added when changing smem_start and smem_len fields,
so the mutex inside the fb_mmap() call is actually used.
The problem was that set_fb_fix, which modifies the above 2 fields,
was called before and after registering the framebuffer,
which when used before registration, lead to a failed attempt to
use an uninitialized mutex.
Solution: Don't use mutex before framebuffer registration.

fbcon makes the (reasonable) assumption that it only needs to program the
hardware once, when fbcon_init() is called for the foreground console.
This doesn't always play well with vgacon because vgacon_deinit() is only
doing its job when the last console it owns is closed (when switching from
vgacon to fbcon, that's usually *after* fbcon_init() has set the new
mode).
Depending on the hardware this can cause the wrong framebuffer location to
be scanned out (e.g. reproduced on nv05 with the nouveau framebuffer
driver).

Attempting to unload a framebuffer module calls unregister_framebuffer()
which in turn gets fbcon to release it. If fbcon has no framebuffers
linked to a console, it will also unbind itself from the console driver.
However, if fbcon never registered itself as a console driver, the unbind
will fail causing the framebuffer device entry to persist. In most cases
this failure will result in an oops when attempting to access the now
non-existent device.
This patch ensures that the fbcon unbind request will succeed even if a
bind was never done. It tracks if a successful bind ever occurred & will
only attempt to unbind if needed. If there never was a bind, it simply
returns with no error.

I would like to get rid of option CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD and just
always enable it. There are many reasons for doing this:
* CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y is what all x86 distributions do, so it
definitely works or we would know by now.
* Building the matroxfb driver with CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD not set
results in the following build warning:
drivers/video/matrox/matroxfb_crtc2.c: In function 'matroxfb_dh_open':
drivers/video/matrox/matroxfb_crtc2.c:265: warning: the address of 'matroxfb_global_mxinfo' will always evaluate as 'true'
drivers/video/matrox/matroxfb_crtc2.c: In function 'matroxfb_dh_release':
drivers/video/matrox/matroxfb_crtc2.c:285: warning: the address of 'matroxfb_global_mxinfo' will always evaluate as 'true'
This is nothing to be worried about, the driver will work fine, but build
warnings are still annoying.
* The trick to get multihead support without CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD,
which is described in the config help text, no longer works: you can't
load the same kernel module more than once.
* I fail to see how CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y would make the code
significantly slower, contrary to what the help text says. A few extra
parameters on the stack here and there can't really slow things down in
comaprison to the rest of the code, and register access.
* The driver built without CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD is larger than the
driver build with CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y by 8%.
* One less configuration option makes things simpler. We add options
all the time, being able to remove one for once is nice. It improves
testing coverage. And I don't think the Matrox adapters are still
popular enough to warrant overdetailed configuration settings.
* We should be able to unobfuscate the driver code quite a bit after
this change (patches follow.)

At the moment about half of the framebuffer drivers can return an error
code in fb_set_par. Until now it would be silently ignored by fbmem.c
and fbcon.c. This patch fixes fbmem.c to return the error code and
restore var on error.
But it is not clear in which video mode the device is when fb_set_par
fails. It would be good and reasonable if it were in the old state but
there is no guarantee that this is true for all existing drivers.
Additionally print a message if a failing fb_set_par is detected in
fbmem.c or fbcon.c.
Although most errors should be caught by the previous fb_check_var some
errors can't as they are dynamic (memory allocations, ...) and can only be
detected while performing the operations which is forbidden in
fb_check_var.
This patch shouldn't have a negative impact on normal operation as all
drivers return 0 on success. The impact in case of error depends heavily
on the driver and caller but it's expected to be better than before.

Fix the range check for panning. The current code fails to detect some
invalid values (very high ones that can occur if an app tries to move
further up/left than 0,0) as the check uses the unknown values for

The main motivation of this patch was to merge the three initialization
functions in one and clean it up. However as some changes in other code
areas where needed to do it right some small other changes were made.
Changes to viafb_par:
io_virt renamed as engine_mmio and moved to shared
VQ_start renamed as vq_vram_addr and moved to shared
VQ_end removed as it is easily recalculatable
vq_vram_addr is not strictly needed but keep it to track where we
allocated video memory. The memory allocated for the virtual queue was
shrunk to VQ_SIZE as VQ_SIZE+CURSOR_SIZE looked like a bug to me. But to
be honest I don't have the faintest idea what virtual queues are for in
the graphic hardware and whether the driver needs them in any way. I only
know that they aren't directly accessed by the driver and so the only
potential current use would be as hardware internal buffers. For now keep
them to avoid regressions and only remove the double cursor allocation.
The most changes were caused by renames and the mentioned structure
changes so the chance of regressions is pretty low. The meaning of
viafb_accel changed slightly as previously it was changed back and forth
in the code and allowed to enable the hardware acceleration by software if
previously disabled. The new behaviour is that viafb_accel=0 always
prevents hardware acceleration. With viafb_accel!=0 the acceleration can
be freely choosen by set_var. This means viafb_accel is a diagnostic tool
and if someone has to use viafb_accel=0 the driver needs to be fixed.
As this is mostly a code cleanup no regressions beside the slightly change
of viafb_accel is expected.

Furthermore it uses local instead global variables where possible, moves
the cursor variable in shared as only one hardware cursor is supported and
returns an error if memory allocation fails. Last but not least it fixes
a too small buffer (as u32 has only 4 and not 32 bytes) but this did not
produce any known problems.
This is mostly a code cleanup, no negative runtime changes are expected.

This patch is a completly rewritten 2D engine. The engine is no longer in
a default state but reinitialized every time to allow usage for both
framebuffers regardless of their settings.
The whole engine handling is concentrated in a big function which takes 16
parameters. Although the number of parameters is worryingly it is good to
have a single funtion to deal with this stuff as it allows to easily
support different engines and avoids some code duplication.
On the way support for the new 2D engine in VX800 was added. As the with
less code duplication but it is probably better to duplicate the code as
this way is easier to walk if VIA ever decides to release a new engine
which changes anything the driver touches.
The engine support for VX800 gives a notable boost in speed. There are no
known regressions but as this patch changes paths I do neither have the
hardware nor documentation to check and has the possibility to put the
system in a critical state heavy testing is appreciated.

This patch introduces viafb_shared and is the beginning of a smooth
transition to use it.
viafb_shared should contain all general, non-surface specific data that
should be shared along all viafb framebuffers while viafb_par should only
contain things that are specific to each surface or in other words extend
fb_info. This change is intended to clean the dual/multi framebuffer
handling up.
This removes the annoyance that viafbinfo1->par points to a different
structure than viaparinfo1.
As the last change is fundamental it is difficult to ensure that all parts
of the driver do not depend on the previous brokenness but the chance of
regressions is very low.

At least for VX800 this initialization is not very good as some parts of
the register are written with reserved values. This makes the display go
white in some configurations and not usable until the framebuffer is
removed. It's better to not initialize it as it allows to use a
previously (by BIOS) correctly configured display.
This patch makes some displays work but might cause problems on others.
This is bad but can not be easily avoided. If this causes some
regressions it's probably the best to fix it in the 'active' display setup
code.

Remove everything related to video devices from the driver as it did not
influence the driver operation. This patch does change the userspace
behaviour as it removes two IOCTLs and one module parameter. But this is
good as it removes useless stuff and helps the user to figure out the
options that do affect the driver behaviour (which are still too many).

Clean the handling of ioremapped video memory up. The following changes
were made:
info->screen_base - viafb_FB_MM
(VRAM offset calculation) was replaced by
info->fix.smem_start - viafbinfo->fix.smem_start
which is essentially the same calculation but done with physical instead
virtual addresses.
*->fbmem_virt
was replaced by
viafbinfo->screen_base
This is true for viafbinfo and viafbinfo1 as the par pointers are equal.
An early initialization of viafbinfo1->fix.smem* was removed as done later
in viafb_setup_fixinfo.
This patch highlights that the only usage of the ioremapped video memory
in the driver is for hardware cursor handling. Even if it has to hold the
used virtual screen mapped for old-fashioned read/write calls (vs.
mmap'ed) a lot virtual memory could be saved by only ioremapping on
demand.

Remove the mode information from viafbdev.c and uses the one of viamode.c
instead. This is possible because horizontal and vertical address are the
same as horizontal and vertical resolution. The reduced blanking modes in

modes and therefore always the normal modes are selected just as the old
behaviour.

Certain hardware will send us events when the backlight brightness
changes. Add a function to update the value in the core, and
additionally send a uevent so that userspace can pop up appropriate
UI. The uevents are flagged depending on whether the update originated
in the kernel or from userspace, making it easier to only display UI
at the appropriate time.

Many years ago when this driver was written, it had a use, but these
days it's nothing but trouble and distributions should not enable it
in any situation.
Pretty much every console device a sparc machine could see has a
bonafide real driver, making the PROM console hack unnecessary.
If any new device shows up, we should write a driver instead of
depending upon this crutch to save us. We've been able to take care
of this even when no chip documentation exists (sunxvr500, sunxvr2500)
so there are no excuses.

Background:
Graphic devices are accessed through ranges in I/O or memory space. While most
modern devices allow relocation of such ranges, some "Legacy" VGA devices
implemented on PCI will typically have the same "hard-decoded" addresses as
they did on ISA. For more details see "PCI Bus Binding to IEEE Std 1275-1994
Standard for Boot (Initialization Configuration) Firmware Revision 2.1"
Section 7, Legacy Devices.
The Resource Access Control (RAC) module inside the X server currently does
the task of arbitration when more than one legacy device co-exists on the same
machine. But the problem happens when these devices are trying to be accessed
by different userspace clients (e.g. two server in parallel). Their address
assignments conflict. Therefore an arbitration scheme _outside_ of the X
server is needed to control the sharing of these resources. This document
introduces the operation of the VGA arbiter implemented for Linux kernel.

The WM831x series of PMICs provide DC-DC boost convertors and current
sinks which can be used together to drive LEDs for use as backlights.
Expose this functionality via the backlight API.
Since when used in this configuration the current sink and boost
convertor are very tightly coupled with a multi-stage startup for
the current sink which overlaps with the boost convertor startup
this driver bypasses the regulator API. Machine inititialisation
is responsible for ensuring that the regulators are not accessed
via both APIs.

This patch modifies the SuperH Mobile LCDC framebuffer driver
to support Runtime PM. The driver is using the functions
- pm_runtime_get_sync()

hardware is idle then the bus code may call the runtime dev_pm_ops
callbacks to save and restore state. pm_runtime_resume() is used

Catalin and kmemleak spotted a leak of a VC screen buffer in
vc_allocate() due to the following chain of events:
vc_allocate()
visual_init(init=1)
vc->vc_sw->con_init(init=1)
fbcon_init()
vc_resize()
vc->screen_buf = kmalloc()
vc->screen_buf = kmalloc()
The common way for the VC drivers is to set the screen dimension
parameters manually in the init case and only call vc_resize() for
!init - which allocates a screen buffer according to the new
dimensions.
fbcon instead would do vc_resize() unconditionally and afterwards set
the dimensions manually (again) for !init - i.e. completely upside
down. The vc_resize() allocated buffer would then get lost by
vc_allocate() allocating a fresh one.
Use vc_resize() only for actual resizing to close the leak.
Set the dimensions manually only in initialization mode to remove the
redundant setting in resize mode.

This fixes a bug caused by changing pointers (viafb_mode, viafb_mode1)

changing these vars as they are only read once and removing now
superfluous code.
On unpatched kernels loading viafb with viafb_mode or viafb_mode1 option
used and afterwards unloading it results in:

This is caused by the current code changing the pointers assigned by
module_param. During unload it tries to free the memory the pointers
point at which is now part of an internal structure.
The patch simply avoids changing the pointers. This is okay as they are
read only once during the initialization process.

There's some odd bug in gcc-4.2 where it miscompiles a simple loop whent
he loop counter is of type 'unsigned char' and it should count to 128.
The compiler will incorrectly decide that a trivial loop like this:
unsigned char i, ...
for (i = 0; i < 128; i++) {
..
is endless, and will compile it to a single instruction that just
branches to itself.
This was triggered by the addition of '-fno-strict-overflow', and we
could play games with compiler versions and go back to '-fwrapv'
instead, but the trivial way to avoid it is to just make the loop
induction variable be an 'int' instead.

The connector documentation states that the argument to the callback
function is always a pointer to a struct cn_msg, but rather than encode it
in the API itself, it uses a void pointer everywhere. This doesn't make
much sense to encode the pointer in documentation as it prevents proper C
type checking from occurring and can easily allow people to use the wrong
pointer type. So convert the argument type to an explicit struct cn_msg
pointer.

This deifdefs the driver and adds an explicit HAVE_CLK dependency. Given
that all SH platforms provide it, there is no reason to keep this as an

already have to provide clock framework support for timers and so on
already, so adding this as an additional dependency is not terribly
probematic.

place in register_framebuffer(), leading to:

Add a mutex to avoid a circular locking problem between the mm layer
semaphore and fbdev ioctl mutex through the fb_mmap() call.
Also, add mutex to all places where smem_start and smem_len fields change
so the mutex inside the fb_mmap() is actually used. Changing of these
fields before calling the framebuffer_register() are not mutexed.
This is 2.6.31 material. It removes one lockdep (fb_mmap() and
register_framebuffer()) but there is still another one (fb_release() and
register_framebuffer()). It also cleans up handling of the smem_start and
smem_len fields used by mutexed section of the fb_mmap().

With KMS we have ran into an issue where we really want the KMS fb driver
to be the one running the console, so panics etc can be shown by switching
out of X etc.
However with vesafb/efifb built-in, we end up with those on fb0 and the
KMS fb driver on fb1, driving the same piece of hw, so this adds an fb
info flag to denote a firmware fbdev, and adds a new aperture base/size
range which can be compared when the hw drivers are installed to see if
there is a conflict with a firmware driver, and if there is the firmware
driver is unregistered and the hw driver takes over.
It uses new aperture_base/size members instead of comparing on the fix
smem_start/length, as smem_start/length might for example only cover the
first 1MB of the PCI aperture, and we could allocate the kms fb from 8MB
into the aperture, thus they would never overlap.

The driver's fb_mmap function is essentially the same as a generic fb_mmap
function. Delete driver's function and use the generic one.
A difference is that generic function marks frame buffer memory as VM_IO |
VM_RESERVED. The driver's function marks it as VM_IO only.

Add support for the ARGB1888 and ARGB4888 hardware to the Samsung SoC
Framebuffer driver (s3c-fb.c).
ARGB1888 and ARGB4888 is decided by var->transp.length and this variable
is set by s3c_fb_check_var().
In s3c_fb_check_var(), if var->vits_per_pixel is 25 or 28, then
var->transp.length would be 1 or 3.
Therefore alpha mode(ARGB1888 or ARGB4888) could be decided through that
variable.
For using alpha mode, you need to set the following: This code should be
added to your machine code as platform data.
static struct s3c_fb_pd_win xxx_fb_win0 = {
/* this is to ensure we use win0 */
.win_mode = {
.pixclock = (8+8+8+240)*(38+4+38+400),
.left_margin = 8,
.right_margin = 8,
.upper_margin = 38,
.lower_margin = 38,
.hsync_len = 8,
.vsync_len = 4,
.xres = 240,
.yres = 400,
},
.max_bpp = 32,
.default_bpp = 24,
};
static struct s3c_fb_pd_win xxx_fb_win1 = {
.win_mode = {
.pixclock = (8+8+8+240)*(38+4+38+400),
.left_margin = 8,
.right_margin = 8,
.upper_margin = 38,
.lower_margin = 38,
.hsync_len = 8,
.vsync_len = 4,
.xres = 240,
.yres = 400,
},
.max_bpp = 32,
.default_bpp = 28,
};
static struct s3c_fb_platdata xxx_lcd_pdata __initdata = {
.win[0] = &ncp_fb_win0,
.win[1] = &ncp_fb_win1,
.vidcon0 = VIDCON0_VIDOUT_RGB | VIDCON0_PNRMODE_RGB,
.vidcon1 = VIDCON1_INV_HSYNC | VIDCON1_INV_VSYNC,
.setup_gpio = xxx_fb_gpio_setup,
};
s3c_fb_set_platdata(&xxx_lcd_pdata);
The above code sets pixelformat for window0 layer to RGB888 and window1
layer to ARGB4888.

AFAICT the code which checks that the requested pixclock value is within
bounds is incorrect. It ensures that the lcdc core clock is at least
(bytes per pixel) times higher than the pixel clock rather than just
greater than or equal to.
There are tighter restrictions on the pixclock value as a function of bus
width for STN panels but even then it isn't a simple relationship as
currently checked for. IMO either something like the below patch should
be applied or else more detailed checking logic should be implemented
which takes in to account the panel type as well.

In the near future, the driver core is going to not allow direct access
to the driver_data pointer in struct device. Instead, the functions
dev_get_drvdata() and dev_set_drvdata() should be used. These functions
have been around since the beginning, so are backwards compatible with
all older kernel versions.
