The ioctl serialization mutex (vdev->lock or q->lock for vb2 queues)
was taken at the highest level in v4l2-dev.c. This prevents more
fine-grained locking since at that level we cannot examine the ioctl
arguments, we can only do that after video_usercopy is called.
So push the locking down to __video_do_ioctl() and subdev_do_ioctl_lock().
This also allows us to make a few functions in v4l2-ioctl.c static and
video_usercopy() is no longer exported.
The locking scheme is not changed by this patch, just pushed down.

Remove dependencies on HAS_DMA where a Kconfig symbol depends on another
symbol that implies HAS_DMA, and, optionally, on "|| COMPILE_TEST".
In most cases this other symbol is an architecture or platform specific
symbol, or PCI.
Generic symbols and drivers without platform dependencies keep their
dependencies on HAS_DMA, to prevent compiling subsystems or drivers that
cannot work anyway.
This simplifies the dependencies, and allows to improve compile-testing.
Note:
- The various VIDEOBUF*DMA* symbols had to loose their dependencies on
HAS_DMA, as they are selected by several individual drivers.

This reverts commit fc7f8fd42c.
Whilst the rationale for the above commit was in general correct, i.e.
that users *consuming* the DMA addresses should rely on sglen rather
than num_pages, it has always been the case that the DMA API itself
still requires that dma_{sync,unmap}_sg() are called with the original
number of entries as passed to dma_map_sg(), not the number of mapped
entries it returned. Thus the particular changes made in that patch
were erroneous.
At worst this might lead to data loss at the tail end of mapped buffers
on non-coherent hardware, while at best it's an example of incorrect
DMA API usage which has proven to mislead readers.

In the past, "up" were an acronym for "user pointer" and "kp" for
"kernel pointer". However, since commit a1dfb4c48c ("media:
v4l2-compat-ioctl32.c: refactor compat ioctl32 logic"), both
are now __user pointers.
So, the usage of "kp" is really misleading there. So, rename
both to just "p32" and "p64" everywhere it occurs, in order to
make peace with this file's namespace.
There are two exceptions to "up/kp" nomenclature: at
alloc_userspace() and at do_video_ioctl().
There, a new userspace pointer were allocated, in order to store
the 64 bits version of the ioctl. Those were called as "up_native",
with is, IMHO, an even worse name, as "native" could mislead of
being the arguments that were filled from userspace. I almost
renamed it to just "p64", but, after thinking more about that,
it sounded better to call it as "new_p64", as this makes clearer
that this is the data structure that was allocated inside this
file in order to be used to pass/retrieve data when calling the
64-bit ready file->f_op->unlocked_ioctl() function.

The v4l2_subdev core s_power op was used for two different things: power on/off
sensors or video decoders/encoders and to put a tuner in standby (and only the
tuner!). There is no 'tuner wakeup' op, that's done automatically when the tuner
is accessed.
The danger with calling (s_power, 0) to put a tuner into standby is that it is
usually broadcast for all subdevs. So a video receiver subdev that supports
s_power will also be powered off, and since there is no corresponding (s_power, 1)
they will never be powered on again.
In addition, this is specifically meant for tuners only since they draw the most
current.
This patch adds a new tuner op called 'standby' and replaces all calls to
(core, s_power, 0) by (tuner, standby). This prevents confusion between the two
uses of s_power. Note that there is no overlap: bridge drivers either just want
to put the tuner into standby, or they deal with powering on/off sensors. Never
both.
This also makes it easier to replace s_power for the remaining bridge drivers
with some PM code later.
Whether we want something cleaner for tuners in the future is a separate topic.
There is a lot of legacy code surrounding tuners, and I am very hesitant about
making changes there.

Videobuf2 is now separate from V4L2 and can be now built without it, at
least in principle --- enabling videobuf2 in kernel configuration attempts
to compile videobuf2-v4l2.c but that will fail if CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L2 isn't
enabled.
Solve this by adding a separate Kconfig option for videobuf2-v4l2 and make
it a separate module as well. This means that drivers now need to choose
both the appropriate videobuf2 memory type
(VIDEOBUF2_{VMALLOC,DMA_CONTIG,DMA_SG}) and VIDEOBUF2_V4L2 if they need
both.

done
with de-mangling cleanups yet to come.
NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same
values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost".
For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't
actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al.
The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we

If the device is of type VFL_TYPE_SUBDEV then vdev->ioctl_ops
is NULL so the 'if (!ops->vidioc_query_ext_ctrl)' check would crash.
Add a test for !ops to the condition.
All sub-devices that have controls will use the control framework,
so they do not have an equivalent to ops->vidioc_query_ext_ctrl.
Returning false if ops is NULL is the correct thing to do here.

Pull poll annotations from Al Viro:
"This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates
the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as
'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local
variables used to hold the future return value'.
Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN
misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is
low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance
deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those
in this series - it's large enough as it is.
Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and
eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were
equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are
arch-independent, but POLL### are not.
The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from
the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them
in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this
is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll()
work on all architectures.
As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and
it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other
architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered
at all on sparc. With this patch they should work consistently on all
architectures"

The 32-bit compat v4l2 ioctl handling is implemented based on its 64-bit
equivalent. It converts 32-bit data structures into its 64-bit
equivalents and needs to provide the data to the 64-bit ioctl in user
space memory which is commonly allocated using
compat_alloc_user_space().
However, due to how that function is implemented, it can only be called
a single time for every syscall invocation.
Supposedly to avoid this limitation, the existing code uses a mix of
memory from the kernel stack and memory allocated through
compat_alloc_user_space().
Under normal circumstances, this would not work, because the 64-bit
ioctl expects all pointers to point to user space memory. As a
workaround, set_fs(KERNEL_DS) is called to temporarily disable this
extra safety check and allow kernel pointers. However, this might
introduce a security vulnerability: The result of the 32-bit to 64-bit
conversion is writeable by user space because the output buffer has been
allocated via compat_alloc_user_space(). A malicious user space process
could then manipulate pointers inside this output buffer, and due to the
previous set_fs(KERNEL_DS) call, functions like get_user() or put_user()
no longer prevent kernel memory access.
The new approach is to pre-calculate the total amount of user space
memory that is needed, allocate it using compat_alloc_user_space() and
then divide up the allocated memory to accommodate all data structures
that need to be converted.
An alternative approach would have been to retain the union type karg
that they allocated on the kernel stack in do_video_ioctl(), copy all
data from user space into karg and then back to user space. However, we
decided against this approach because it does not align with other
compat syscall implementations. Instead, we tried to replicate the
get_user/put_user pairs as found in other places in the kernel:
if (get_user(clipcount, &up->clipcount) ||
put_user(clipcount, &kp->clipcount)) return -EFAULT;

Clearly nobody could be bothered to upstream this patch or at minimum
tell us :-( We only heard about this a week ago.
This patch was rebased and cleaned up. Compared to the original I
also swapped the order of the convert_in_user arguments so that they
matched copy_in_user. It was hard to review otherwise. I also replaced
the ALLOC_USER_SPACE/ALLOC_AND_GET by a normal function.

ctrl_is_pointer just hardcoded two known string controls, but that
caused problems when using e.g. custom controls that use a pointer
for the payload.
Reimplement this function: it now finds the v4l2_ctrl (if the driver

driver implements that directly).
In both cases it can now check if the control is a pointer control

Don't duplicate the buffer type checks in enum/g/s/try_fmt.
The check_fmt function does that already.
It is hard to keep the checks in sync for all these functions and
in fact the check for VBI was wrong in the _fmt functions as it
allowed SDR types as well. This caused a v4l2-compliance failure

The V4L2_ASYNC_MATCH_FWNODE match criteria requires just one
struct to be filled (struct fwnode_handle). The V4L2_ASYNC_MATCH_DEVNAME
match criteria requires just a device name.
So, it doesn't make sense to enclose those into structs,
as the criteria can go directly into the union.
That makes easier to document it, as we don't need to document
weird senseless structs.
At drivers, this makes even clearer about the match criteria.

When matching and registering a sub-device from a sub-notifier use the
v4l2_device from the root parent notifier. Using the v4l2_dev stored in
the sub-notifier itself is incorrect as it might not be set.
This can be demonstrated by unbinding and rebinding the adv748x driver
and observing that it fails to probe due to the check !v4l2_dev in
v4l2_device_register_subdev().
# echo 4-0070 > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/adv748x/unbind
# echo 4-0070 > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/adv748x/bind
adv748x 4-0070: chip found @ 0xe0 revision 2143
adv748x 4-0070: Failed to probe TXA
adv748x: probe of 4-0070 failed with error -22
Looking at the commit which adds sub-notifiers to V4L2 it looks like
this is the intended behavior of the original commit. With this fix the
adv748x can be re-bound and still function properly.

V4L2 memory registrations are incompatible with filesystem-dax that
needs the ability to revoke dma access to a mapping at will, or
otherwise allow the kernel to wait for completion of DMA. The
filesystem-dax implementation breaks the traditional solution of
truncate of active file backed mappings since there is no page-cache
page we can orphan to sustain ongoing DMA.
If v4l2 wants to support long lived DMA mappings it needs to arrange to
hold a file lease or use some other mechanism so that the kernel can
coordinate revoking DMA access when the filesystem needs to truncate
mappings.

The commit aef69d5475 ("media: v4l: fwnode: Add a convenience
function for registering sensors") adds the function
v4l2_async_notifier_parse_fwnode_sensor_common() to parse and register a
subdevice and a subdev-notifier by parsing firmware information. This
new subdev-notifier is stored in the new field 'subdev_notifier' in
struct v4l2_subdev.
In v4l2_async_unregister_subdev() this field is used to unregister and
cleanup the subdev-notifier. A check for if the subdev-notifier is
initialized or not was forgotten leading to a NULL pointer dereference
in v4l2_async_notifier_cleanup() if a subdevice do not use the optional
convince function to initialize the field.
Fix this by checking in v4l2_async_notifier_cleanup() that it is
provided whit a notifier making it safe to call with a NULL parameter.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Registering a notifier has required the knowledge of struct v4l2_device
for the reason that sub-devices generally are registered to the
v4l2_device (as well as the media device, also available through
v4l2_device).
This information is not available for sub-device drivers at probe time.
What this patch does is that it allows registering notifiers without
having v4l2_device around. Instead the sub-device pointer is stored in the
notifier. Once the sub-device of the driver that registered the notifier
is registered, the notifier will gain the knowledge of the v4l2_device,
and the binding of async sub-devices from the sub-device driver's notifier
may proceed.
The complete callback of the root notifier will be called only when the
v4l2_device is available and no notifier has pending sub-devices to bind.
No complete callbacks are supported for sub-device notifiers.

The information on how many async sub-devices would be bindable to a
notifier is typically dependent on information from platform firmware and
it's not driver's business to be aware of that.
Many V4L2 main drivers are perfectly usable (and useful) without async
sub-devices and so if there aren't any around, just proceed call the
notifier's complete callback immediately without registering the notifier
itself.
If a driver needs to check whether there are async sub-devices available,
it can be done by inspecting the notifier's num_subdevs field which tells

Add two functions for parsing devices graph endpoints:
v4l2_async_notifier_parse_fwnode_endpoints and
v4l2_async_notifier_parse_fwnode_endpoints_by_port. The former iterates
over all endpoints whereas the latter only iterates over the endpoints in
a given port.
The former is mostly useful for existing drivers that currently implement
the iteration over all the endpoints themselves whereas the latter is
especially intended for devices with both sinks and sources: async
sub-devices for external devices connected to the device's sources will
have already been set up, or the external sub-devices are part of the
master device.

Remove V4L2 async re-probing support. The re-probing support has been
there to support cases where the sub-devices require resources provided by
the main driver's hardware to function, such as clocks.
Reprobing has allowed unbinding and again binding the main driver without
explicitly unbinding the sub-device drivers. This is certainly not a
common need, and the responsibility will be the user's going forward.
An alternative could have been to introduce notifier specific locks.
Considering the complexity of the re-probing and that it isn't really a
solution to a problem but a workaround, remove re-probing instead.
If there is a need to support the clock provider unregister/register cycle
while keeping the clock references in the consumers in the future, this
should be implemented in the clock framework instead, not in V4L2.

If you have a control handler that does not contain any controls, then
currently calling VIDIOC_G/S/TRY_EXT_CTRLS with count == 0 will return
-EINVAL in the class_check() function.
This is not correct, there is no reason why this should return an error.
The purpose of setting count to 0 is to test if the ioctl can mix controls
from different control classes. And this is possible. The fact that there
are not actually any controls defined is another matter that is unrelated
to this test.

This reverts commit d2180e0cf7.
The commit was flawed in that if the device_node pointers are different,
then in fact a different device is present and the device node could be
different in ways other than full_name.
As Frank Rowand explained:
"When an overlay (1) is removed, all uses and references to the nodes and
properties in that overlay are no longer valid. Any driver that uses any
information from the overlay _must_ stop using any data from the overlay.
Any driver that is bound to a new node in the overlay _must_ unbind. Any
driver that became bound to a pre-existing node that was modified by the
overlay (became bound after the overlay was applied) _must_ adjust itself
to account for any changes to that node when the overlay is removed. One
way to do this is to unbind when notified that the overlay is about to
be removed, then to re-bind after the overlay is completely removed.
If an overlay (2) is subsequently applied, a node with the same
full_name as from overlay (1) may exist. There is no guarantee
that overlay (1) and overlay (2) are the same overlay, even if
that node has the same full_name in both cases."
Also, there's not sufficient overlay support in mainline to actually
remove and re-apply an overlay to hit this condition as overlays can
only be applied from in kernel APIs.

The V4L2 flash interface allows controlling multiple LEDs through a single

change the default behavior of the v4l2-core DMA mapping direction
from DMA_TO/FROM_DEVICE (depending on the buffer type CAPTURE or
OUTPUT) to DMA_BIDIRECTIONAL during queue_init time.
Initially the issue with DMA mapping direction has been found in
Venus encoder driver where the hardware (firmware side) adds few
lines padding on bottom of the image buffer, and the consequence
is triggering of IOMMU protection faults.
This will help supporting venus encoder (and probably other drivers
in the future) which wants to map output type of buffers as

The type field in struct v4l2_selection is supposed to never use the
_MPLANE variants. E.g. if the driver supports V4L2_BUF_TYPE_VIDEO_CAPTURE_MPLANE,
then userspace should still pass V4L2_BUF_TYPE_VIDEO_CAPTURE.
The reasons for this are lost in the mists of time, but it is really
annoying. In addition, the exynos drivers didn't follow this rule and
instead expected the _MPLANE type.
To fix that code is added to the v4l2 core that maps the _MPLANE buffer
types to their regular equivalents before calling the driver.
Effectively this allows for userspace to use either _MPLANE or the regular
buffer type. This keeps backwards compatibility while making things easier
for userspace.
Since drivers now never see the _MPLANE buffer types the exynos drivers
had to be adapted as well.

There are multiple places where arrays or otherwise variable sized
buffer are allocated through V4L2 core code, including things like
controls, memory pages, staging buffers for ioctls and so on. Such
allocations can potentially require an order > 0 allocation from the
page allocator, which is not guaranteed to be fulfilled and is likely to
fail on a system with severe memory fragmentation (e.g. a system with
very long uptime).
Since the memory being allocated is intended to be used by the CPU
exclusively, we can consider using vmalloc() as a fallback and this is
exactly what the recently merged kvmalloc() helpers do. A kmalloc() call
is still attempted, even for order > 0 allocations, but it is done
with __GFP_NORETRY and __GFP_NOWARN, with expectation of failing if
requested memory is not available instantly. Only then the vmalloc()
fallback is used. This should give us fast and more reliable allocations
even on systems with higher memory pressure and/or more fragmentation,
while still retaining the same performance level on systems not
suffering from such conditions.
While at it, replace explicit array size calculations on changed
allocations with kvmalloc_array().
Purposedly not touching videobuf1, as it is deprecated, has only few
users remaining and would rather be seen removed instead.

This patch adds support for the three new SDR formats. These formats
were prefixed with "planar" indicating I & Q data are not interleaved
as in other formats. Here, I & Q data constitutes the top half and bottom
half of the received buffer respectively.
V4L2_SDR_FMT_PCU16BE - 14-bit complex (I & Q) unsigned big-endian sample
inside 16-bit. V4L2 FourCC: PC16
V4L2_SDR_FMT_PCU18BE - 16-bit complex (I & Q) unsigned big-endian sample
inside 18-bit. V4L2 FourCC: PC18
V4L2_SDR_FMT_PCU20BE - 18-bit complex (I & Q) unsigned big-endian sample
inside 20-bit. V4L2 FourCC: PC20

The buffer cache should be synchronised in buffer preparation, not when
the buffer is queued to the device. Fix this.
Mmap buffers do not need cache synchronisation since they are always
coherent.

Rename __qbuf_*() functions which are specific to a buffer type as
__prepare_*() which matches with what they do. The naming was there for
historical reasons; the purpose of the functions was changed without
renaming them.
