Char/Misc drivers for 6.4-rc1
Here is the "big" set of char/misc and other driver subsystems for 6.4-rc1. It's pretty big, but due to the removal of pcmcia drivers, almost breaks even for number of lines added vs. removed, a nice change. Included in here are: - removal of unused PCMCIA drivers (finally!) - Interconnect driver updates and additions - Lots of IIO driver updates and additions - MHI driver updates - Coresight driver updates - NVMEM driver updates, which required some OF updates - W1 driver updates and a new maintainer to manage the subsystem - FPGA driver updates - New driver subsystem, CDX, for AMD systems - lots of other small driver updates and additions All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. mm, treewide: redefine MAX_ORDER sanely
MAX_ORDER currently defined as number of orders page allocator supports: user can ask buddy allocator for page order between 0 and MAX_ORDER-1. This definition is counter-intuitive and lead to number of bugs all over the kernel. driver core: class: remove module * from class_create()
The module pointer in class_create() never actually did anything, and it shouldn't have been requred to be set as a parameter even if it did something. Driver Core changes for 6.2-rc1
Here is the set of driver core and kernfs changes for 6.2-rc1. The "big" change in here is the addition of a new macro, container_of_const() that will preserve the "const-ness" of a pointer passed into it. The "problem" of the current container_of() macro is that if you pass in a "const *", out of it can comes a non-const pointer unless you specifically ask for it. For many usages, we want to preserve the "const" attribute by using the same call. For a specific example, this series changes the kobj_to_dev() macro to use it, allowing it to be used no matter what the const value is. This prevents every subsystem from having to declare 2 different individual macros (i.e. kobj_const_to_dev() and kobj_to_dev()) and having the compiler enforce the const value at build time, which having 2 macros would not do either. The driver for all of this have been discussions with the Rust kernel developers as to how to properly mark driver core, and kobject, objects as being "non-mutable". The changes to the kobject and driver core in this pull request are the result of that, as there are lots of paths where kobjects and device pointers are not modified at all, so marking them as "const" allows the compiler to enforce this. So, a nice side affect of the Rust development effort has been already to clean up the driver core code to be more obvious about object rules. All of this has been bike-shedded in quite a lot of detail on lkml with different names and implementations resulting in the tiny version we have in here, much better than my original proposal. Lots of subsystem maintainers have acked the changes as well. Other than this change, included in here are smaller stuff like: - kernfs fixes and updates to handle lock contention better - vmlinux.lds.h fixes and updates - sysfs and debugfs documentation updates - device property updates All of these have been in the linux-next tree for quite a while with no problems, OTHER than some merge issues with other trees that should be obvious when you hit them (block tree deletes a driver that this tree modifies, iommufd tree modifies code that this tree also touches). In [1], Christoph Hellwig has proposed to remove the wrappers in
include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h.
Some reasons why this API should be removed have been given by Julia
Lawall in [2].
Finally, Arnd Bergmann reminded that the documentation was updated 11 years
ago to only describe the modern linux/dma-mapping.h interfaces and mark the
old bus-specific ones as no longer recommended, see commit

PCI: Use 'pci_channel_state_t' instead of 'enum pci_channel_state'
The method struct pci_error_handlers.error_detected() is defined and documented as taking an 'enum pci_channel_state' for the second argument, but most drivers use 'pci_channel_state_t' instead. This 'pci_channel_state_t' is not a typedef for the enum but a typedef for a bitwise type in order to have better/stricter typechecking. Consolidate everything by using 'pci_channel_state_t' in the method's definition, in the related helpers and in the drivers. Enforce use of 'pci_channel_state_t' by replacing 'enum pci_channel_state' with an anonymous 'enum'. Note: Currently, from a typechecking point of view this patch changes nothing because only the constants defined by the enum are bitwise, not the enum itself (sparse doesn't have the notion of 'bitwise enum'). This may change in some not too far future, hence the patch. genwqe: convert get_user_pages() --> pin_user_pages()
This code was using get_user_pages*(), in a "Case 2" scenario
(DMA/RDMA), using the categorization from [1]. That means that it's
time to convert the get_user_pages*() + put_page() calls to
pin_user_pages*() + unpin_user_pages() calls.
There is some helpful background in [2]: basically, this is a small
part of fixing a long-standing disconnect between pinning pages, and
file systems' use of those pages.

compat_ioctl: use correct compat_ptr() translation in drivers
A handful of drivers all have a trivial wrapper around their ioctl handler, but don't call the compat_ptr() conversion function at the moment. In practice this does not matter, since none of them are used on the s390 architecture and for all other architectures, compat_ptr() does not do anything, but using the new compat_ptr_ioctl() helper makes it more correct in theory, and simplifies the code. I checked that all ioctl handlers in these files are compatible and take either pointer arguments or no argument. Driver Core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1
Here is the "big" driver core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1
It's a lot of different patches, all across the tree due to some api
changes and lots of debugfs cleanups. Because of this, there is going
to be some merge issues with your tree at the moment, I'll follow up
with the expected resolutions to make it easier for you.
Other than the debugfs cleanups, in this set of changes we have:
- bus iteration function cleanups (will cause build warnings
with s390 and coresight drivers in your tree)
- scripts/get_abi.pl tool to display and parse Documentation/ABI
entries in a simple way
- cleanups to Documenatation/ABI/ entries to make them parse
easier due to typos and other minor things
- default_attrs use for some ktype users
- driver model documentation file conversions to .rst
- compressed firmware file loading
- deferred probe fixes
All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with a bunch of merge
issues that Stephen has been patient with me for. Other than the merge
issues, functionality is working properly in linux-next :)

SPDX update for 5.2-rc4
Another round of SPDX header file fixes for 5.2-rc4 These are all more "GPL-2.0-or-later" or "GPL-2.0-only" tags being added, based on the text in the files. We are slowly chipping away at the 700+ different ways people tried to write the license text. All of these were reviewed on the spdx mailing list by a number of different people. Char/Misc driver fixes for 5.2-rc4
Here are some small char and misc driver fixes for 5.2-rc4 to resolve a
number of reported issues.
The most "notable" one here is the kernel headers in proc^Wsysfs fixes.
Those changes move the header file info into sysfs and fixes the build
issues that you reported.
Other than that, a bunch of small habanalabs driver fixes, some fpga
driver fixes, and a few other tiny driver fixes.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

genwqe: Prevent an integer overflow in the ioctl
There are a couple potential integer overflows here.
round_up(m->size + (m->addr & ~PAGE_MASK), PAGE_SIZE);
The first thing is that the "m->size + (...)" addition could overflow,
and the second is that round_up() overflows to zero if the result is
within PAGE_SIZE of the type max.
In this code, the "m->size" variable is an u64 but we're saving the
result in "map_size" which is an unsigned long and genwqe_user_vmap()
takes an unsigned long as well. So I have used ULONG_MAX as the upper
bound. From a practical perspective unsigned long is fine/better than
trying to change all the types to u64.

mm/gup: change GUP fast to use flags rather than a write 'bool'
To facilitate additional options to get_user_pages_fast() change the singular write parameter to be gup_flags. This patch does not change any functionality. New functionality will follow in subsequent patches. Some of the get_user_pages_fast() call sites were unchanged because they already passed FOLL_WRITE or 0 for the write parameter. NOTE: It was suggested to change the ordering of the get_user_pages_fast() arguments to ensure that callers were converted. This breaks the current GUP call site convention of having the returned pages be the final parameter. So the suggestion was rejected. signal/GenWQE: Fix sending of SIGKILL
The genweq_add_file and genwqe_del_file by caching current without
using reference counting embed the assumption that a file descriptor
will never be passed from one process to another. It even embeds the
assumption that the the thread that opened the file will be in
existence when the process terminates. Neither of which are
guaranteed to be true.
Therefore replace caching the task_struct of the opener with
pid of the openers thread group id. All the knowledge of the
opener is used for is as the target of SIGKILL and a SIGKILL
will kill the entire process group.
Rename genwqe_force_sig to genwqe_terminate, remove it's unncessary
signal argument, update it's ownly caller, and use kill_pid
instead of force_sig.
The work force_sig does in changing signal handling state is not
relevant to SIGKILL sent as SEND_SIG_PRIV. The exact same processess
will be killed just with less work, and less confusion. The work done
by force_sig is really only needed for handling syncrhonous
exceptions.
It will still be possible to cause genwqe_device_remove to wait
8 seconds by passing a file descriptor to another process but
the possible user after free is fixed.
