74ea5f983f cifs: replace snprintf with scnprintf
a trivial patch that replaces all use of snprintf with scnprintf.
scnprintf() is generally seen as a safer function to use than
snprintf for many use cases.

In our case, there is no actual difference between the two since we never
look at the return value. Thus we did not have any of the bugs that
scnprintf protects against and the patch does nothing.

However, for people reading our code it will be a receipt that we
have done our due dilligence and checked our code for this type of bugs.

See the presentation "Making C Less Dangerous In The Linux Kernel"
at this years LCA

165df9a080 CIFS: Fix leaking locked VFS cache pages in writeback retry
If we don't find a writable file handle when retrying writepages
we break of the loop and do not unlock and put pages neither from
wdata2 nor from the original wdata. Fix this by walking through
all the remaining pages and cleanup them properly.

8004c78c68 CIFS: Fix credits calculations for reads with errors
Currently we mark MID as malformed if we get an error from server

in the readv callback. Fix this by marking such a response as
normal received response and process it appropriately.

95390201e7 cifs: use timespec64 internally
In cifs, the timestamps are stored in memory in the cifs_fattr structure,
which uses the deprecated 'timespec' structure. Now that the VFS code

This also makes 32-bit and 64-bit systems behave the same way, and

7ffbe65578 cifs: Fix infinite loop when using hard mount option
For every request we send, whether it is SMB1 or SMB2+, we attempt to
reconnect tcon (cifs_reconnect_tcon or smb2_reconnect) before carrying
out the request.

So, while server->tcpStatus != CifsNeedReconnect, we wait for the
reconnection to succeed on wait_event_interruptible_timeout(). If it
returns, that means that either the condition was evaluated to true, or
timeout elapsed, or it was interrupted by a signal.

Since we're not handling the case where the process woke up due to a
received signal (-ERESTARTSYS), the next call to
wait_event_interruptible_timeout() will _always_ fail and we end up
looping forever inside either cifs_reconnect_tcon() or smb2_reconnect().

Here's an example of how to trigger that:

$ mount.cifs //foo/share /mnt/test -o
username=foo,password=foo,vers=1.0,hard

(break connection to server before executing bellow cmd)
$ stat -f /mnt/test & sleep 140
[1] 2511

$ ps -aux -q 2511
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 2511 0.0 0.0 12892 1008 pts/0 S 12:24 0:00 stat -f
/mnt/test

$ kill -9 2511

(wait for a while; process is stuck in the kernel)
$ ps -aux -q 2511
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 2511 83.2 0.0 12892 1008 pts/0 R 12:24 30:01 stat -f
/mnt/test

By using 'hard' mount point means that cifs.ko will keep retrying
indefinitely, however we must allow the process to be killed otherwise
it would hang the system.

6396bb2215 treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This
patch replaces cases of:

        kzalloc(a * b, gfp)

with:
        kcalloc(a * b, gfp)

as well as handling cases of:

        kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp)

with:

        kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)

as it's slightly less ugly than:

        kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)

This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:

        kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)

though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.

Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.

The Coccinelle script used for this was:

3d4ef9a153 smb3: fix redundant opens on root
In SMB2/SMB3 unlike in cifs we unnecessarily open the root of the share
over and over again in various places during mount and path revalidation
and also in statfs. This patch cuts redundant traffic (opens and closes)
by simply keeping the directory handle for the root around (and reopening
it as needed on reconnect), so query calls don't require three round
trips to copmlete - just one, and eases load on network, client and
server (on mount alone, cuts network traffic by more than a third).

Also add a new cifs mount parm "nohandlecache" to allow users whose
servers might have resource constraints (eg in case they have a server
with so many users connecting to it that this extra handle per mount
could possibly be a resource concern).

76e752701a cifs: Check for timeout on Negotiate stage
Some servers seem to accept connections while booting but never send
the SMBNegotiate response neither close the connection, causing all
processes accessing the share hang on uninterruptible sleep state.

This happens when the cifs_demultiplex_thread detects the server is
unresponsive so releases the socket and start trying to reconnect.
At some point, the faulty server will accept the socket and the TCP
status will be set to NeedNegotiate. The first issued command accessing
the share will start the negotiation (pid 5828 below), but the response
will never arrive so other commands will be blocked waiting on the mutex
(pid 55352).

This patch checks for unresponsive servers also on the negotiate stage
releasing the socket and reconnecting if the response is not received
and checking again the tcp state when the mutex is acquired.

9d5b86ac13 fs/locks: Remove fl_nspid and use fs-specific l_pid for remote locks
Since commit c69899a17c "NFSv4: Update of VFS byte range lock must be
atomic with the stateid update", NFSv4 has been inserting locks in rpciod
worker context. The result is that the file_lock's fl_nspid is the
kworker's pid instead of the original userspace pid.

The fl_nspid is only used to represent the namespaced virtual pid number
when displaying locks or returning from F_GETLK. There's no reason to set
it for every inserted lock, since we can usually just look it up from
fl_pid. So, instead of looking up and holding struct pid for every lock,
let's just look up the virtual pid number from fl_pid when it is needed.
That means we can remove fl_nspid entirely.

The translaton and presentation of fl_pid should handle the following four
cases:

1 - F_GETLK on a remote file with a remote lock:
In this case, the filesystem should determine the l_pid to return here.
Filesystems should indicate that the fl_pid represents a non-local pid
value that should not be translated by returning an fl_pid <= 0.

2 - F_GETLK on a local file with a remote lock:
This should be the l_pid of the lock manager process, and translated.

3 - F_GETLK on a remote file with a local lock, and
4 - F_GETLK on a local file with a local lock:
These should be the translated l_pid of the local locking process.

Fuse was already doing the correct thing by translating the pid into the
caller's namespace. With this change we must update fuse to translate
to init's pid namespace, so that the locks API can then translate from
init's pid namespace into the pid namespace of the caller.

With this change, the locks API will expect that if a filesystem returns
a remote pid as opposed to a local pid for F_GETLK, that remote pid will
be <= 0. This signifies that the pid is remote, and the locks API will
forego translating that pid into the pid namespace of the local calling
process.

Finally, we convert remote filesystems to present remote pids using
negative numbers. Have lustre, 9p, ceph, cifs, and dlm negate the remote
pid returned for F_GETLK lock requests.

Since local pids will never be larger than PID_MAX_LIMIT (which is
currently defined as <= 4 million), but pid_t is an unsigned int, we
should have plenty of room to represent remote pids with negative
numbers if we assume that remote pid numbers are similarly limited.

If this is not the case, then we run the risk of having a remote pid
returned for which there is also a corresponding local pid. This is a
problem we have now, but this patch should reduce the chances of that
occurring, while also returning those remote pid numbers, for whatever
that may be worth.

511c54a2f6 CIFS: Reconnect expired SMB sessions
According to the MS-SMB2 spec (3.2.5.1.6) once the client receives
STATUS_NETWORK_SESSION_EXPIRED error code from a server it should
reconnect the current SMB session. Currently the client doesn't do
that. This can result in subsequent client requests failing by
the server. The patch adds an additional logic to the demultiplex
thread to identify expired sessions and reconnect them.

de1892b887 Don't delay freeing mids when blocked on slow socket write of request
When processing responses, and in particular freeing mids (DeleteMidQEntry),
which is very important since it also frees the associated buffers (cifs_buf_release),
we can block a long time if (writes to) socket is slow due to low memory or networking
issues.

We can block in send (smb request) waiting for memory, and be blocked in processing
responess (which could free memory if we let it) - since they both grab the
server->srv_mutex.

In practice, in the DeleteMidQEntry case - there is no reason we need to
grab the srv_mutex so remove these around DeleteMidQEntry, and it allows
us to free memory faster.

e37fea58f7 fs: cifs: replace CURRENT_TIME by other appropriate apis
CURRENT_TIME macro is not y2038 safe on 32 bit systems.

The patch replaces all the uses of CURRENT_TIME by current_time() for
filesystem times, and ktime_get_* functions for authentication
timestamps and timezone calculations.

This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs
timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe.

CURRENT_TIME macro will be deleted before merging the aforementioned
change.

The inode timestamps read from the server are assumed to have correct
granularity and range.

The patch also assumes that the difference between server and client
times lie in the range INT_MIN..INT_MAX. This is valid because this is
the difference between current times between server and client, and the
largest timezone difference is in the range of one day.

All cifs timestamps currently use timespec representation internally.
Authentication and timezone timestamps can also be transitioned into
using timespec64 when all other timestamps for cifs is transitioned to
use timespec64.

09cbfeaf1a mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.

This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.

We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.

Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.

Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.

The changes are pretty straight-forward:

 - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};

 - page_cache_get() -> get_page();

 - page_cache_release() -> put_page();

This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.

The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.

There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

2baa268253 Remap reserved posix characters by default (part 3/3)
This is a bigger patch, but its size is mostly due to
a single change for how we check for remapping illegal characters
in file names - a lot of repeated, small changes to
the way callers request converting file names.

The final patch in the series does the following:

1) changes default behavior for cifs to be more intuitive.
Currently we do not map by default to seven reserved characters,
ie those valid in POSIX but not in NTFS/CIFS/SMB3/Windows,
unless a mount option (mapchars) is specified. Change this
to by default always map and map using the SFM maping
(like the Mac uses) unless the server negotiates the CIFS Unix
Extensions (like Samba does when mounting with the cifs protocol)
when the remapping of the characters is unnecessary. This should
help SMB3 mounts in particular since Samba will likely be
able to implement this mapping with its new "vfs_fruit" module
as it will be doing for the Mac.
2) if the user specifies the existing "mapchars" mount option then
use the "SFU" (Microsoft Services for Unix, SUA) style mapping of
the seven characters instead.
3) if the user specifies "nomapposix" then disable SFM/MAC style mapping
(so no character remapping would be used unless the user specifies
"mapchars" on mount as well, as above).
4) change all the places in the code that check for the superblock
flag on the mount which is set by mapchars and passed in on all
path based operation and change it to use a small function call
instead to set the mapping type properly (and check for the
mapping type in the cifs unicode functions)

9ae6cf606a cifs: stop trying to use virtual circuits
Currently, we try to ensure that we use vcnum of 0 on the first
established session on a connection and then try to use a different
vcnum on each session after that.

This is a little odd, since there's no real reason to use a different
vcnum for each SMB session. I can only assume there was some confusion
between SMB sessions and VCs. That's somewhat understandable since they
both get created during SESSION_SETUP, but the documentation indicates
that they are really orthogonal. The comment on max_vcs in particular
looks quite misguided. An SMB session is already uniquely identified
by the SMB UID value -- there's no need to again uniquely ID with a
VC.

Furthermore, a vcnum of 0 is a cue to the server that it should release
any resources that were previously held by the client. This sounds like
a good thing, until you consider that:

a) it totally ignores the fact that other programs on the box (e.g.
smbclient) might have connections established to the server. Using a
vcnum of 0 causes them to get kicked off.

b) it causes problems with NAT. If several clients are connected to the
same server via the same NAT'ed address, whenever one connects to the
server it kicks off all the others, which then reconnect and kick off
the first one...ad nauseum.

I don't see any reason to ignore the advice in "Implementing CIFS" which
has a comprehensive treatment of virtual circuits. In there, it states
"...and contrary to the specs the client should always use a VcNumber of
one, never zero."

Have the client just use a hardcoded vcnum of 1, and stop abusing the
special behavior of vcnum 0.

3f618223dc move sectype to the cifs_ses instead of TCP_Server_Info
Now that we track what sort of NEGOTIATE response was received, stop
mandating that every session on a socket use the same type of auth.

Push that decision out into the session setup code, and make the sectype
a per-session property. This should allow us to mix multiple sectypes on
a socket as long as they are compatible with the NEGOTIATE response.

With this too, we can now eliminate the ses->secFlg field since that

38d77c50b4 cifs: track the enablement of signing in the TCP_Server_Info
Currently, we determine this according to flags in the sec_mode, flags
in the global_secflags and via other methods. That makes the semantics
very hard to follow and there are corner cases where we don't handle
this correctly.

Add a new bool to the TCP_Server_Info that acts as a simple flag to tell
us whether signing is enabled on this connection or not, and fix up the
places that need to determine this to use that flag.

This is a bit weird for the SMB2 case, where signing is per-session.
SMB2 needs work in this area already though. The existing SMB2 code has
similar logic to what we're using here, so there should be no real
change in behavior. These changes should make it easier to implement
per-session signing in the future though.

Pages get the PG_writeback flag set before cifs sends its

the PG_writeback flags and reclaims the pages under that circumstances.

49418b2c28 cifs: Modify struct cifs_unix_set_info_args to hold a kuid_t and a kgid_t
Use INVALID_UID and INVALID_GID instead of NO_CHANGE_64 to indicate
the value should not be changed.

In cifs_fill_unix_set_info convert from kuids and kgids into uids and
gids that will fit in FILE_UNIX_BASIC_INFO.

c052e2b423 cifs: obtain file access during backup intent lookup (resend)
Rebased and resending the patch.

Path based queries can fail for lack of access, especially during lookup
during open.
open itself would actually succeed becasue of back up intent bit
but queries (either path or file handle based) do not have a means to
specifiy backup intent bit.
So query the file info during lookup using
 trans2 / findfirst / file_id_full_dir_info
to obtain file info as well as file_id/inode value.

5819575ec6 cifs: replace kvec array in readdata with a single kvec
The array is no longer needed. We just need a single kvec to hold the

8321fec436 cifs: convert async read code to use pages array without kmapping
Replace the "marshal_iov" function with a "read_into_pages" function.
That function will copy the read data off the socket and into the
pages array, kmapping and reading pages one at a time.

fec344e3f3 cifs: change cifs_call_async to use smb_rqst structs
For now, none of the callers populate rq_pages. That will be done for
writes in a later patch. While we're at it, change the prototype of
setup_async_request not to need a return pointer argument. Just
return the pointer to the mid_q_entry or an ERR_PTR.

bf5ea0e2f2 cifs: change signing routines to deal with smb_rqst structs
We need a way to represent a call to be sent on the wire that does not
require having all of the page data kmapped. Behold the smb_rqst struct.
This new struct represents an array of kvecs immediately followed by an
array of pages.

Convert the signing routines to use these structs under the hood and
turn the existing functions for this into wrappers around that. For now,
we're just changing these functions to take different args. Later, we'll
teach them how to deal with arrays of pages.
