tty: tty_buffer: use __tty_insert_flip_string_flags() in tty_insert_flip_char()
Use __tty_insert_flip_string_flags() for the slow path of tty_insert_flip_char(). The former is generic enough, so there is no reason to reimplement the injection once again. So now we have a single function stuffing into tty buffers. tty: tty_buffer: unify tty_insert_flip_string_{fixed_flag,flags}()
They both do the same except for flags. One mem-copies the flags from the caller, the other mem-sets to one flag given by the caller. This can be unified with a simple if in the unified function. Networking changes for 6.5.
Core ---- - Rework the sendpage & splice implementations. Instead of feeding data into sockets page by page extend sendmsg handlers to support taking a reference on the data, controlled by a new flag called MSG_SPLICE_PAGES. Rework the handling of unexpected-end-of-file to invoke an additional callback instead of trying to predict what the right combination of MORE/NOTLAST flags is. Remove the MSG_SENDPAGE_NOTLAST flag completely. - Implement SCM_PIDFD, a new type of CMSG type analogous to SCM_CREDENTIALS, but it contains pidfd instead of plain pid. - Enable socket busy polling with CONFIG_RT. - Improve reliability and efficiency of reporting for ref_tracker. - Auto-generate a user space C library for various Netlink families. Protocols --------- - Allow TCP to shrink the advertised window when necessary, prevent sk_rcvbuf auto-tuning from growing the window all the way up to tcp_rmem[2]. - Use per-VMA locking for "page-flipping" TCP receive zerocopy. - Prepare TCP for device-to-device data transfers, by making sure that payloads are always attached to skbs as page frags. - Make the backoff time for the first N TCP SYN retransmissions linear. Exponential backoff is unnecessarily conservative. - Create a new MPTCP getsockopt to retrieve all info (MPTCP_FULL_INFO). - Avoid waking up applications using TLS sockets until we have a full record. - Allow using kernel memory for protocol ioctl callbacks, paving the way to issuing ioctls over io_uring. - Add nolocalbypass option to VxLAN, forcing packets to be fully encapsulated even if they are destined for a local IP address. - Make TCPv4 use consistent hash in TIME_WAIT and SYN_RECV. Ensure in-kernel ECMP implementation (e.g. Open vSwitch) select the same link for all packets. Support L4 symmetric hashing in Open vSwitch. - PPPoE: make number of hash bits configurable. - Allow DNS to be overwritten by DHCPACK in the in-kernel DHCP client (ipconfig). - Add layer 2 miss indication and filtering, allowing higher layers (e.g. ACL filters) to make forwarding decisions based on whether packet matched forwarding state in lower devices (bridge). - Support matching on Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) packets. - Hide the "link becomes ready" IPv6 messages by demoting their printk level to debug. - HSR: don't enable promiscuous mode if device offloads the proto. - Support active scanning in IEEE 802.15.4. - Continue work on Multi-Link Operation for WiFi 7. BPF --- - Add precision propagation for subprogs and callbacks. This allows maintaining verification efficiency when subprograms are used, or in fact passing the verifier at all for complex programs, especially those using open-coded iterators. - Improve BPF's {g,s}setsockopt() length handling. Previously BPF assumed the length is always equal to the amount of written data. But some protos allow passing a NULL buffer to discover what the output buffer *should* be, without writing anything. - Accept dynptr memory as memory arguments passed to helpers. - Add routing table ID to bpf_fib_lookup BPF helper. - Support O_PATH FDs in BPF_OBJ_PIN and BPF_OBJ_GET commands. - Drop bpf_capable() check in BPF_MAP_FREEZE command (used to mark maps as read-only). - Show target_{obj,btf}_id in tracing link fdinfo. - Addition of several new kfuncs (most of the names are self-explanatory): - Add a set of new dynptr kfuncs: bpf_dynptr_adjust(), bpf_dynptr_is_null(), bpf_dynptr_is_rdonly(), bpf_dynptr_size() and bpf_dynptr_clone(). - bpf_task_under_cgroup() - bpf_sock_destroy() - force closing sockets - bpf_cpumask_first_and(), rework bpf_cpumask_any*() kfuncs Netfilter --------- - Relax set/map validation checks in nf_tables. Allow checking presence of an entry in a map without using the value. - Increase ip_vs_conn_tab_bits range for 64BIT builds. - Allow updating size of a set. - Improve NAT tuple selection when connection is closing. Driver API ---------- - Integrate netdev with LED subsystem, to allow configuring HW "offloaded" blinking of LEDs based on link state and activity (i.e. packets coming in and out). - Support configuring rate selection pins of SFP modules. - Factor Clause 73 auto-negotiation code out of the drivers, provide common helper routines. - Add more fool-proof helpers for managing lifetime of MDIO devices associated with the PCS layer. - Allow drivers to report advanced statistics related to Time Aware scheduler offload (taprio). - Allow opting out of VF statistics in link dump, to allow more VFs to fit into the message. - Split devlink instance and devlink port operations. The latter will definitely require fixes but I think that we got it to a reasonable point. Core: - Rework the sendpage & splice implementations Instead of feeding data into sockets page by page extend sendmsg handlers to support taking a reference on the data, controlled by a new flag called MSG_SPLICE_PAGES Rework the handling of unexpected-end-of-file to invoke an additional callback instead of trying to predict what the right combination of MORE/NOTLAST flags is Remove the MSG_SENDPAGE_NOTLAST flag completely - Implement SCM_PIDFD, a new type of CMSG type analogous to SCM_CREDENTIALS, but it contains pidfd instead of plain pid - Enable socket busy polling with CONFIG_RT - Improve reliability and efficiency of reporting for ref_tracker - Auto-generate a user space C library for various Netlink families Protocols: - Allow TCP to shrink the advertised window when necessary, prevent sk_rcvbuf auto-tuning from growing the window all the way up to tcp_rmem[2] - Use per-VMA locking for "page-flipping" TCP receive zerocopy - Prepare TCP for device-to-device data transfers, by making sure that payloads are always attached to skbs as page frags - Make the backoff time for the first N TCP SYN retransmissions linear. Exponential backoff is unnecessarily conservative - Create a new MPTCP getsockopt to retrieve all info (MPTCP_FULL_INFO) - Avoid waking up applications using TLS sockets until we have a full record - Allow using kernel memory for protocol ioctl callbacks, paving the way to issuing ioctls over io_uring - Add nolocalbypass option to VxLAN, forcing packets to be fully encapsulated even if they are destined for a local IP address - Make TCPv4 use consistent hash in TIME_WAIT and SYN_RECV. Locking changes for v6.5:
- Introduce cmpxchg128() -- aka. the demise of cmpxchg_double(). The cmpxchg128() family of functions is basically & functionally the same as cmpxchg_double(), but with a saner interface: instead of a 6-parameter horror that forced u128 - u64/u64-halves layout details on the interface and exposed users to complexity, fragility & bugs, use a natural 3-parameter interface with u128 types. - Restructure the generated atomic headers, and add kerneldoc comments for all of the generic atomic{,64,_long}_t operations. Generated definitions are much cleaner now, and come with documentation. - Implement lock_set_cmp_fn() on lockdep, for defining an ordering when taking multiple locks of the same type. This gets rid of one use of lockdep_set_novalidate_class() in the bcache code. - Fix raw_cpu_generic_try_cmpxchg() bug due to an unintended variable shadowing generating garbage code on Clang on certain ARM builds. Add the generated atomic headers to driver-api/basics.rst in order to provide documentation for the Linux kernel's atomic operations. At the same time, dtop the x86 atomic header, which provides kerneldoc comments for some arch_atomic*_*() operations. The arch_atomic*_*() operations are now purely an implenentation detail of the raw_atomic*_*() ops, and outside of implementing the atomics, code should use the raw_atomic*_*() forms. Char/Misc drivers for 6.4-rc1
Here is the "big" set of char/misc and other driver subsystems for 6.4-rc1. It's pretty big, but due to the removal of pcmcia drivers, almost breaks even for number of lines added vs. removed, a nice change. Included in here are: - removal of unused PCMCIA drivers (finally!) - Interconnect driver updates and additions - Lots of IIO driver updates and additions - MHI driver updates - Coresight driver updates - NVMEM driver updates, which required some OF updates - W1 driver updates and a new maintainer to manage the subsystem - FPGA driver updates - New driver subsystem, CDX, for AMD systems - lots of other small driver updates and additions All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. Driver core changes for 6.4-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1. Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening in the driver core in the quest to be able to move "struct bus" and "struct class" into read-only memory, a task now complete with these changes. This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more "provably correct" as well as providing more obvious lifetime rules for all busses and classes in the kernel. The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and busses as many callbacks were changed to take const * parameters instead. All of these changes have been submitted to the various subsystem maintainers, giving them plenty of time to review, and most of them actually did so. Other than those changes, included in here are a small set of other things: - kobject logging improvements - cacheinfo improvements and updates - obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes - documentation updates - device property cleanups and const * changes - firwmare loader dependency fixes. nvmem: core: introduce NVMEM layouts
NVMEM layouts are used to generate NVMEM cells during runtime. Think of an EEPROM with a well-defined conent. For now, the content can be described by a device tree or a board file. But this only works if the offsets and lengths are static and don't change. One could also argue that putting the layout of the EEPROM in the device tree is the wrong place. Instead, the device tree should just have a specific compatible string. Right now there are two use cases: (1) The NVMEM cell needs special processing. E.g. if it only specifies a base MAC address offset and you need to add an offset, or it needs to parse a MAC from ASCII format or some proprietary format. (Post processing of cells is added in a later commit). (2) u-boot environment parsing. The cells don't have a particular offset but it needs parsing the content to determine the offsets and length. mtd: spi-nor: Stop exporting spi_nor_restore()
Some SPI NOR controllers that used this method were moved to drivers/spi/. We don't accept new support for the existing SPI NOR controllers drivers under drivers/mtd/spi-nor/controllers/ and we encourage their owners to move the drivers under drivers/spi/. Make spi_nor_restore() private as we're going to use it just in core.c. tty: n_gsm: add ioctl for DLC config via ldisc handle
The application which initializes the n_gsm ldisc may like to set individual default parameters for each DLCI or take over of the application specific DLCI configuration completely. This is currently not possible. It is either possible to set common default parameters for all DLCIs or let the user application set its DLCI specific configuration parameters. Add support of GSMIOC_GETCONF_DLCI and GSMIOC_SETCONF_DLCI for the n_gsm ldisc handle to support DLCI specific parameter configuration upfront. Add a code example for this use case to the n_gsm documentation. dma-buf/sync_file: Surface sync-file uABI
We had all of the internal driver APIs, but not the all important userspace uABI, in the dma-buf doc. Fix that. And re-arrange the comments slightly as otherwise the comments for the ioctl nr defines would not show up. v2: Fix docs build warning coming from newly including the uabi header in the docs build Signed-off-by: Rob Clark <robdclark@chromium.org> Acked-by: Pekka Paalanen <pekka.paalanen@collabora.com> |

dma-buf/dma-fence: Add deadline awareness
Add a way to hint to the fence signaler of an upcoming deadline, such as vblank, which the fence waiter would prefer not to miss. This is to aid the fence signaler in making power management decisions, like boosting frequency as the deadline approaches and awareness of missing deadlines so that can be factored in to the frequency scaling. v2: Drop dma_fence::deadline and related logic to filter duplicate deadlines, to avoid increasing dma_fence size. The fence-context implementation will need similar logic to track deadlines of all the fences on the same timeline. [ckoenig] v3: Clarify locking wrt. set_deadline callback v4: Clarify in docs comment that this is a hint v5: Drop DMA_FENCE_FLAG_HAS_DEADLINE_BIT. v6: More docs v7: Fix typo, clarify past deadlines Signed-off-by: Rob Clark <robdclark@chromium.org> Reviewed-by: Christian König <christian.koenig@amd.com> Acked-by: Pekka Paalanen <pekka.paalanen@collabora.com> Reviewed-by: Bagas Sanjaya <bagasdotme@gmail.com> |

driver core: bus: mark the struct bus_type for sysfs callbacks as constant
struct bus_type should never be modified in a sysfs callback as there is nothing in the structure to modify, and frankly, the structure is almost never used in a sysfs callback, so mark it as constant to allow struct bus_type to be moved to read-only memory. Documentation: gpio: Input mode is not true Hi-Z
The true Hi-Z (a.k.a. high impedance) mode is when pin is completely disconnected from the chip. This includes input buffer as well. Nevertheless, some hardware may not support that mode and they are considering input only as Hi-Z, but more precisely it is an equivalent to that, in electronics it's basically "an antenna mode". Sligthly correct documentation to take the above into consideration.
