5ab4840968 vgacon: vgacon_scrolldelta simplification
There's no point in checking diff == c->vc_rows, because it can be true
only when count == 0, but we already checked that. Additionally move
variables used only in one block to this block.

aef7db4bd5 fbdev: fix recursive notifier and locking when fbdev console is blanked
Fix infinite recursive notifier in the fbdev layer. This causes recursive
locking. Dmitry Baryshkov found the problem and confirmed that the patch
fixes the bug.

After doing

08650869e0 fbcon: fix monochrome color value calculation
Commit 22af89aa0c ("fbcon: replace mono_col
macro with static inline") changed the order of operations for computing
monochrome color values. This generates 0xffff000f instead of 0x0000000f
for a 4 bit monochrome color, leading to image corruption if it is passed
to cfb_imageblit or other similar functions. Fix it up.

a57a5c2e8d x86 setup: remove remnants of CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT (read: vga=)
Impact: cleanup

Video mode selection became always possible in 2.6.23-rc1 after i386 setup
code rewrite in C.

Regardless, VIDEO_SELECT is stupid config option because it affects only
kernel setup code, not code which always stays in memory.

vga= always possible now which is good.

fdac4e69a1 sticore: don't activate unsupported GSC STI cards on HPPA
On HPPA there exists some older GSC graphics cards, which need special
graphic-card-BIOS patching to become supported. Since we don't have yet
implemented the patching, it's better to detect such cards in advance,
inform to the user that there are known problems and to not activate the
card.

Problematic GSC cards and BIOS versions are:
* Hyperdrive/Hyperbowl (A4071A) graphics card series:
   * ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/8)
   * ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/11)
* Thunder 1 VISUALIZE 48 card:
   * ID = 0x2F23E5FC (Version 8.05/9)
* Thunder 2 VISUALIZE 48 XP card:
   * ID = 0x2F8D570E (Version 8.05/12)
* Some Hyperion and ThunderHawk GSC cards

0b9cf3aa6b mdacon messing up default vc's - set default to vc13-16 again
mdacon incorrectly detects MDA hardware on systems without such graphics card.

One may load this module by chance, for example when doing some systematical
module-testing, and if there is no Monochrome Display Adapter attached ,
module init renders vc1-16 completely unusable.

I and others have run into this more than once. see [Bug 224522 - modprobe
mdacon freezes machine -> https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224522 ]
for example

Apparently proper MDA detection seems to be broken for a long time - seems to
be related to those #ifdef TEST_MDA_B statements added by Edward Betts.

this commit back in 2002 made things even worse :
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tglx/history.git;a=commit;h=c72757b49c88914433244757fb4967fc63546685

It changed default vc allocation from 13-16 to 1-16 for no apparent reason
(!?) , and with that (and without X), mdacon grabs the vc you`re currently
sitting on and locks you out.

this is from Kconfig :
>config MDA_CONSOLE
>        depends on !M68K && !PARISC && ISA
> tristate "MDA text console (dual-headed) (EXPERIMENTAL)"
>        ---help---
> Say Y here if you have an old MDA or monochrome Hercules graphics
> adapter in your system acting as a second head ( = video card). You
> will then be able to use two monitors with your Linux system. Do not
> say Y here if your MDA card is the primary card in your system; the
> normal VGA driver will handle it.

As we can see mdacon is just meant as an additional driver for dual-head
setup, and since kernel 2.4.36 still defaults to vc13-16 , setting the default
back to that value again shouldn`t do any harm.

Hereby i'm reverting that change, setting default back to to vc13-16 again.

Besides the fact that mdacon may be rarely or never be used these days and
could perhaps put to trash anyway (pre-dinosaur hardware!), indeed this is not
a real solution, but at least it removes the unfortunate side-effect of
messing up the vc you`re working on.

d850a2fac1 vt/fbcon: fix background color on line feed
Another addendum to commit c9e587abfd
("vt: fix background color on line feed").

fbcon still was not doing the right thing (read: continued to do old
behavior). fbcon_clear() seems to clear the new line (e.g. where your new

the previous one only (where "foo" appears). So just temporarily set the
video_erase_char to the scrl_erase_char so that fbcon_clear does the right
thing.

causes the line that was started as a result of the line feed to be completely
filled with the currently active background color instead of the default
color.

When scrolling, part of the current screen is memcpy'd/memmove'd to the new
region, and the new line(s) that will appear as a result are cleared using
memset. However, the lines are cleared with vc->vc_video_erase_char, causing
them to be colored with the currently active background color. This is
different from X11 terminal emulators which always paint the new lines with
the default background color (e.g. `xterm -bg black`).

The clear operation (\e[1J and \e[2J) also use vc_video_erase_char, so a new
vc->vc_scrl_erase_char is introduced with contains the erase character used
for scrolling, which is built from vc->vc_def_color instead of vc->vc_color.

91c4313206 fbcon: fix color generation for monochrome framebuffer
The current attr_fgcol_ec / attr_bgcol_ec macros do a simple shift of bits
to get the color from vc_video_erase_char. For a monochrome display
however the attribute does not contain any color, only attribute bits.
Furthermore the reverse bit is lost because it is shifted out, the
resulting color is always 0.

This can bee seen on a monochrome console either directly or by setting it
to inverse mode via "setterm -inversescreen on" . Text is written with
correct color, fb_fillrects from a bit_clear / bit_clear_margins will get
wrong colors.

4d8a2d986d fbcon: delay the start of the cursor timer until a con_switch()
As reported in Bugzilla Bug 9093, upon switching to X, a small rectangular
cursor can still be seen blinking in the upper left part of the screen. It is
fbcon's text cursor. This is caused by a strange ioctl(..., KDSETMODE,
KD_TEXT) call done by something in userspace, perhaps by X itself, while the
tty is still in graphics mode. And when the tty is in KD_TEXT mode, the
cursor timer is restarted.

Although this is a userspace problem, we can work around it by delaying the
restart of the cursor timer until an fbcon_switch() is called. In other
words, the cursor timer will not be restarted even if a KD_TEXT mode switch is
requested.

e400b6ec4e vt/vgacon: Check if screen resize request comes from userspace
Various console drivers are able to resize the screen via the con_resize()
hook. This hook is also visible in userspace via the TIOCWINSZ, VT_RESIZE and
VT_RESIZEX ioctl's. One particular utility, SVGATextMode, expects that
con_resize() of the VGA console will always return success even if the
resulting screen is not compatible with the hardware. However, this
particular behavior of the VGA console, as reported in Kernel Bugzilla Bug
7513, can cause undefined behavior if the user starts with a console size
larger than 80x25.

To work around this problem, add an extra parameter to con_resize(). This
parameter is ignored by drivers except for vgacon. If this parameter is
non-zero, then the resize request came from a VT_RESIZE or VT_RESIZEX ioctl
and vgacon will always return success. If this parameter is zero, vgacon will
return -EINVAL if the requested size is not compatible with the hardware. The
latter is the more correct behavior.

With this change, SVGATextMode should still work correctly while in-kernel and
stty resize calls can expect correct behavior from vgacon.

cfafca8067 fbdev: fbcon: console unregistration from unregister_framebuffer
This allows for proper console unregistration via the VT layer, and updates
the FB layer to use it. This makes debugging new console drivers much easier,
since you can properly clean them up before unloading.

[adaplas]
unregister_framebuffer() is typically called as part of the driver's
module_exit(). Doing so otherwise will freeze the machine as the VT layer is
holding reference counts on fbcon, and fbcon on the driver. With this change,
it allows unregister_framebuffer() to be called safely anywhere as needed.

Additions from the original: If multiple drivers are used by fbcon, and if
one of them unregisters, a driver will take over the consoles vacated by the
outgoing one (via set_con2fb_map). Once only the outgoing driver remains,
then fbcon will unbind from the VT layer (if CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE_UNBINDING is
set to y).

It is important that these drivers implement fb_open() and fb_release()
just to ensure that no other process is using the driver. Likewise, these
drivers _must_ check the return value of unregister_framebuffer().

353076fee8 [VIDEO]: Fix section mismatch warning in promcon.
Fix the following warnings in promcon:
WARNING: o-sparc64/drivers/video/console/built-in.o(.text+0x480): Section mismatch: reference to .init.data:promfont_unitable (between 'promcon_init_unimap' and 'promcon_init')
WARNING: o-sparc64/drivers/video/console/built-in.o(.text+0x488): Section mismatch: reference to .init.data:promfont_unitable (between 'promcon_init_unimap' and 'promcon_init')
WARNING: o-sparc64/drivers/video/console/built-in.o(.text+0x48c): Section mismatch: reference to .init.data:promfont_unicount (between 'promcon_init_unimap' and 'promcon_init')
WARNING: o-sparc64/drivers/video/console/built-in.o(.text+0x490): Section mismatch: reference to .init.data:promfont_unicount (between 'promcon_init_unimap' and 'promcon_init')

The warnings happens because the function: promcon_init_unimap()
references promfont_unitable and promfont_unicount which are marked
__initdata by the conmakehash command in the drivers/video/console/Makefile

Fix the warning by removing the __initdata marker on the two variables.

2ae8547775 vgacon: disallow console operations when in KD_GRAPHICS mode
Reported by James Pearson as:

	 boot to run level 3

	 if not root, then make sure /dev/console is writeable

	 login and type:

	 setterm -blank 0

	 start X

	 type into an xterm:

	 while true; do echo "" > /dev/console; usleep 100000; done

	 while the above loop is running switch to the text console and back
	 again (Ctrl-Alt-F1 then Ctrl-Alt-F7)

	 ... and the screen will be shifting (and wrapping) to the left.

This problem stems from continuously writing text to the system console (which
is in KD_TEXT mode) while the foreground console is in KD_GRAPHICS
mode. Somewhere along the way, console printing got confused and omitted the
KD_GRAPHICS/KD_TEXT test. Thus, vgacon attempted to scroll the screen of X,
which causes X to shift.

Fix by disallowing vgacon to touch the hardware when the vc is in KD_GRAPHICS
mode. A definitive fix entails a full audit of the console code.

70802c6037 fbdev: don't show logo if driver or fbcon are modular
It was always intended for the logo to be drawn only if both fbcon and the
driver that is mapped to it are both compiled statically. Currently, if fbcon
is loaded prior to the driver, the logo is not shown. Reverse the order, and
the code may attempt to draw the logo which is __initdata. By accident, this
bug is rarely seen because this method of loading the modules is not common
and secondly, a code in fb_prepare_logo() that checks the height of the logo
(now a random value) rarely succeeds.

Fix by drawing the logo only if both fbcon and the driver are statically
compiled.

cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

024cd7e088 [PATCH] softcursor.c: avoid unaligned accesses
Fix some possible unaligned accesses when accessing fields of 'image'
pointer. Indeed this pointer was obtained by allocating a block of memory
that embeds a temporary array plus an image structure. The temporary
buffer was located at the start of the allocated block and depending on its
size, the image structure which comes right after can be unaligned.

For example when using mini fonts (4x6) (cursor's width is 4 and its height
is 6) the temporary buf size is 6 bytes.

Therefore this patch moves the image structure to the start of the block
and moves the temporary buffer right after. It makes 'image' pointer
always aligned and since the tempo buf is a buffer of char, it's always
correctly aligned as well.

It also fixes the file header alignement.

7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

 (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

 (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
     something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

 (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

we have

-static void fbcon_vbl_handler(int irq, void *dummy, struct pt_regs *fp)
+static void fb_vbl_handler(int irq, void *dev_id, struct pt_regs *fp)

and 3 years later a couple of instances missed back then still remains
there.

894673ee61 [PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.h
screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be
included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to
directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to
communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this
patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a
mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error.

a8f340e394 [PATCH] vt: Remove VT-specific declarations and definitions from tty.h
MAX_NR_CONSOLES, fg_console, want_console and last_console are more of a
function of the VT layer than the TTY one. Moving these to vt.h and vt_kern.h
allows all of the framebuffer and VT console drivers to remove their
dependency on tty.h.
