mm: introduce MADV_PAGEOUT
When a process expects no accesses to a certain memory range for a long time, it could hint kernel that the pages can be reclaimed instantly but data should be preserved for future use. This could reduce workingset eviction so it ends up increasing performance. This patch introduces the new MADV_PAGEOUT hint to madvise(2) syscall. MADV_PAGEOUT can be used by a process to mark a memory range as not expected to be used for a long time so that kernel reclaims *any LRU* pages instantly. The hint can help kernel in deciding which pages to evict proactively. A note: It doesn't apply SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX LRU page isolation limit intentionally because it's automatically bounded by PMD size. If PMD size(e.g., 256) makes some trouble, we could fix it later by limit it to SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX[1]. - man-page material MADV_PAGEOUT (since Linux x.x) Do not expect access in the near future so pages in the specified regions could be reclaimed instantly regardless of memory pressure. Thus, access in the range after successful operation could cause major page fault but never lose the up-to-date contents unlike MADV_DONTNEED. Pages belonging to a shared mapping are only processed if a write access is allowed for the calling process. MADV_PAGEOUT cannot be applied to locked pages, Huge TLB pages, or VM_PFNMAP pages. mm: introduce MADV_COLD
Patch series "Introduce MADV_COLD and MADV_PAGEOUT", v7. - Background The Android terminology used for forking a new process and starting an app from scratch is a cold start, while resuming an existing app is a hot start. While we continually try to improve the performance of cold starts, hot starts will always be significantly less power hungry as well as faster so we are trying to make hot start more likely than cold start. To increase hot start, Android userspace manages the order that apps should be killed in a process called ActivityManagerService. ActivityManagerService tracks every Android app or service that the user could be interacting with at any time and translates that into a ranked list for lmkd(low memory killer daemon). They are likely to be killed by lmkd if the system has to reclaim memory. In that sense they are similar to entries in any other cache. Those apps are kept alive for opportunistic performance improvements but those performance improvements will vary based on the memory requirements of individual workloads. - Problem Naturally, cached apps were dominant consumers of memory on the system. However, they were not significant consumers of swap even though they are good candidate for swap. Under investigation, swapping out only begins once the low zone watermark is hit and kswapd wakes up, but the overall allocation rate in the system might trip lmkd thresholds and cause a cached process to be killed(we measured performance swapping out vs. zapping the memory by killing a process. Unsurprisingly, zapping is 10x times faster even though we use zram which is much faster than real storage) so kill from lmkd will often satisfy the high zone watermark, resulting in very few pages actually being moved to swap. - Approach The approach we chose was to use a new interface to allow userspace to proactively reclaim entire processes by leveraging platform information. This allowed us to bypass the inaccuracy of the kernel’s LRUs for pages that are known to be cold from userspace and to avoid races with lmkd by reclaiming apps as soon as they entered the cached state. Additionally, it could provide many chances for platform to use much information to optimize memory efficiency. To achieve the goal, the patchset introduce two new options for madvise. One is MADV_COLD which will deactivate activated pages and the other is MADV_PAGEOUT which will reclaim private pages instantly. These new options complement MADV_DONTNEED and MADV_FREE by adding non-destructive ways to gain some free memory space. MADV_PAGEOUT is similar to MADV_DONTNEED in a way that it hints the kernel that memory region is not currently needed and should be reclaimed immediately; MADV_COLD is similar to MADV_FREE in a way that it hints the kernel that memory region is not currently needed and should be reclaimed when memory pressure rises. IOW, It moves active file page -> inactive file LRU active anon page -> inacdtive anon LRU Unlike MADV_FREE, it doesn't move active anonymous pages to inactive file LRU's head because MADV_COLD is a little bit different symantic. MADV_FREE means it's okay to discard when the memory pressure because the content of the page is *garbage* so freeing such pages is almost zero overhead since we don't need to swap out and access afterward causes just minor fault. Thus, it would make sense to put those freeable pages in inactive file LRU to compete other used-once pages. It makes sense for implmentaion point of view, too because it's not swapbacked memory any longer until it would be re-dirtied. Even, it could give a bonus to make them be reclaimed on swapless system. However, MADV_COLD doesn't mean garbage so reclaiming them requires swap-out/in in the end so it's bigger cost. Since we have designed VM LRU aging based on cost-model, anonymous cold pages would be better to position inactive anon's LRU list, not file LRU. Furthermore, it would help to avoid unnecessary scanning if system doesn't have a swap device. Let's start simpler way without adding complexity at this moment. However, keep in mind, too that it's a caveat that workloads with a lot of pages cache are likely to ignore MADV_COLD on anonymous memory because we rarely age anonymous LRU lists. * man-page material MADV_COLD (since Linux x.x) Pages in the specified regions will be treated as less-recently-accessed compared to pages in the system with similar access frequencies. In contrast to MADV_FREE, the contents of the region are preserved regardless of subsequent writes to pages. MADV_COLD cannot be applied to locked pages, Huge TLB pages, or VM_PFNMAP pages. unistd: protect clone3 via __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3
This lets us catch new architectures that implicitly make use of clone3 without setting __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3. Failing on missing __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 is a good indicator that they either did not really want this syscall or haven't really thought about whether it needs special treatment and just accidently included it in their entrypoints by e.g. generating their syscall table automatically via asm-generic/unistd.h This patch has been compile-tested for the h8300 architecture which is one of the architectures that does not yet implement clone3 and generates its syscall table via asm-generic/unistd.h. It cleanly supports all of the flags from clone() and thus all legacy workloads. There are few user visible differences between clone3 and clone. First, CLONE_DETACHED will cause EINVAL with clone3 so we can reuse this flag. Second, the CSIGNAL flag is deprecated and will cause EINVAL to be reported. It is superseeded by a dedicated "exit_signal" argument in struct clone_args thus freeing up even more flags. A nice feature is that this patchset allowed us to cleanup and simplify various core kernel codepaths in kernel/fork.c by making the internal _do_fork() function take struct kernel_clone_args even for legacy clone(). This patch also unblocks the time namespace patchset which wants to introduce a new CLONE_TIMENS flag. Note, that clone3 has only been wired up for x86{_32,64}, arm{64}, and xtensa. These were the architectures that did not require special massaging. Other architectures treat fork-like system calls individually and after some back and forth neither Arnd nor I felt confident that we dared to add clone3 unconditionally to all architectures. We agreed to leave this up to individual architecture maintainers. This is why there's an additional patch that introduces __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 which any architecture can set once it has implemented support for clone3. bpf: net: Add SO_DETACH_REUSEPORT_BPF
There is SO_ATTACH_REUSEPORT_[CE]BPF but there is no DETACH. This patch adds SO_DETACH_REUSEPORT_BPF sockopt. The same sockopt can be used to undo both SO_ATTACH_REUSEPORT_[CE]BPF. reseport_detach_prog() is added and it is mostly a mirror of the existing reuseport_attach_prog(). The differences are, it does not call reuseport_alloc() and returns -ENOENT when there is no old prog. arch: wire-up clone3() syscall
Wire up the clone3() call on all arches that don't require hand-rolled assembly. Some of the arches look like they need special assembly massaging and it is probably smarter if the appropriate arch maintainers would do the actual wiring. net: socket: implement 64-bit timestamps
The 'timeval' and 'timespec' data structures used for socket timestamps are going to be redefined in user space based on 64-bit time_t in future versions of the C library to deal with the y2038 overflow problem, which breaks the ABI definition. Unlike many modern ioctl commands, SIOCGSTAMP and SIOCGSTAMPNS do not use the _IOR() macro to encode the size of the transferred data, so it remains ambiguous whether the application uses the old or new layout. The best workaround I could find is rather ugly: we redefine the command code based on the size of the respective data structure with a ternary operator. This lets it get evaluated as late as possible, hopefully after that structure is visible to the caller. We cannot use an #ifdef here, because inux/sockios.h might have been included before any libc header that could determine the size of time_t. The ioctl implementation now interprets the new command codes as always referring to the 64-bit structure on all architectures, while the old architecture specific command code still refers to the old architecture specific layout. Currently, every arch/*/include/uapi/asm/Kbuild explicitly includes the common Kbuild.asm file. Factor out the duplicated include directives to scripts/Makefile.asm-generic so that no architecture would opt out of the mandatory-y mechanism. um is not forced to include mandatory-y since it is a very exceptional case which does not support UAPI. If a caller sends a signal to a reused pid it will end up signaling the wrong process. This issue has often surfaced and there has been a push to address this problem [1]. The fd can be used to send signals to the process it refers to. Thus, the new syscall pidfd_send_signal() is introduced to solve this problem. [25]). In addition to the pidfd and signal argument it takes an additional siginfo_t and flags argument. If the siginfo_t argument is NULL then pidfd_send_signal() is equivalent to kill(<positive-pid>, <signal>). If it is not NULL pidfd_send_signal() is equivalent to rt_sigqueueinfo(). The flags argument is added to allow for future extensions of this syscall. It currently needs to be passed as 0. Failing to do so will cause EINVAL. /* pidfd_send_signal() replaces multiple pid-based syscalls */ The pidfd_send_signal() syscall currently takes on the job of rt_sigqueueinfo(2) and parts of the functionality of kill(2), Namely, when a positive pid is passed to kill(2). It will however be possible to also replace tgkill(2) and rt_tgsigqueueinfo(2) if this syscall is extended. /* sending signals to threads (tid) and process groups (pgid) */ Specifically, the pidfd_send_signal() syscall does currently not operate on process groups or threads. This is left for future extensions. In order to extend the syscall to allow sending signal to threads and process groups appropriately named flags (e.g. PIDFD_TYPE_PGID, and PIDFD_TYPE_TID) should be added. This implies that the flags argument will determine what is signaled and not the file descriptor itself. Put in other words, grouping in this api is a property of the flags argument not a property of the file descriptor (cf. [13]). Clarification for this has been requested by Eric (cf. [19]). When appropriate extensions through the flags argument are added then pidfd_send_signal() can additionally replace the part of kill(2) which operates on process groups as well as the tgkill(2) and rt_tgsigqueueinfo(2) syscalls. How such an extension could be implemented has been very roughly sketched in [14], [15], and [16]. However, this should not be taken as a commitment to a particular implementation. There might be better ways to do it. Right now this is intentionally left out to keep this patchset as simple as possible (cf. [4]). /* naming */ The syscall had various names throughout iterations of this patchset: - procfd_signal() - procfd_send_signal() - taskfd_send_signal() In the last round of reviews it was pointed out that given that if the flags argument decides the scope of the signal instead of different types of fds it might make sense to either settle for "procfd_" or "pidfd_" as prefix. The community was willing to accept either (cf. [17] and [18]). Given that one developer expressed strong preference for the "pidfd_" prefix (cf. [13]) and with other developers less opinionated about the name we should settle for "pidfd_" to avoid further bikeshedding. The "_send_signal" suffix was chosen to reflect the fact that the syscall takes on the job of multiple syscalls. It is therefore intentional that the name is not reminiscent of neither kill(2) nor rt_sigqueueinfo(2). Not the fomer because it might imply that pidfd_send_signal() is a replacement for kill(2), and not the latter because it is a hassle to remember the correct spelling - especially for non-native speakers - and because it is not descriptive enough of what the syscall actually does. The name "pidfd_send_signal" makes it very clear that its job is to send signals. /* zombies */ Zombies can be signaled just as any other process. No special error will be reported since a zombie state is an unreliable state (cf. [3]). io_uring: add support for pre-mapped user IO buffers
If we have fixed user buffers, we can map them into the kernel when we setup the io_uring. That avoids the need to do get_user_pages() for each and every IO. To utilize this feature, the application must call io_uring_register() after having setup an io_uring instance, passing in IORING_REGISTER_BUFFERS as the opcode. The argument must be a pointer to an iovec array, and the nr_args should contain how many iovecs the application wishes to map. If successful, these buffers are now mapped into the kernel, eligible for IO. To use these fixed buffers, the application must use the IORING_OP_READ_FIXED and IORING_OP_WRITE_FIXED opcodes, and then set sqe->index to the desired buffer index. sqe->addr..sqe->addr+seq->len must point to somewhere inside the indexed buffer. The application may register buffers throughout the lifetime of the io_uring instance. It can call io_uring_register() with IORING_UNREGISTER_BUFFERS as the opcode to unregister the current set of buffers, and then register a new set. The application need not unregister buffers explicitly before shutting down the io_uring instance. It's perfectly valid to setup a larger buffer, and then sometimes only use parts of it for an IO. As long as the range is within the originally mapped region, it will work just fine. For now, buffers must not be file backed. If file backed buffers are passed in, the registration will fail with -1/EOPNOTSUPP. This restriction may be relaxed in the future. RLIMIT_MEMLOCK is used to check how much memory we can pin. Add io_uring IO interface
The submission queue (SQ) and completion queue (CQ) rings are shared between the application and the kernel. This eliminates the need to copy data back and forth to submit and complete IO. IO submissions use the io_uring_sqe data structure, and completions are generated in the form of io_uring_cqe data structures. The SQ ring is an index into the io_uring_sqe array, which makes it possible to submit a batch of IOs without them being contiguous in the ring. The CQ ring is always contiguous, as completion events are inherently unordered, and hence any io_uring_cqe entry can point back to an arbitrary submission. Two new system calls are added for this: io_uring_setup(entries, params) Sets up an io_uring instance for doing async IO. On success, returns a file descriptor that the application can mmap to gain access to the SQ ring, CQ ring, and io_uring_sqes. io_uring_enter(fd, to_submit, min_complete, flags, sigset, sigsetsize) Initiates IO against the rings mapped to this fd, or waits for them to complete, or both. The behavior is controlled by the parameters passed in. If 'to_submit' is non-zero, then we'll try and submit new IO. If IORING_ENTER_GETEVENTS is set, the kernel will wait for 'min_complete' events, if they aren't already available. It's valid to set IORING_ENTER_GETEVENTS and 'min_complete' == 0 at the same time, this allows the kernel to return already completed events without waiting for them. This is useful only for polling, as for IRQ driven IO, the application can just check the CQ ring without entering the kernel. With this setup, it's possible to do async IO with a single system call. Future developments will enable polled IO with this interface, and polled submission as well. The latter will enable an application to do IO without doing ANY system calls at all. For IRQ driven IO, an application only needs to enter the kernel for completions if it wants to wait for them to occur. Each io_uring is backed by a workqueue, to support buffered async IO as well. We will only punt to an async context if the command would need to wait for IO on the device side. Any data that can be accessed directly in the page cache is done inline. This avoids the slowness issue of usual threadpools, since cached data is accessed as quickly as a sync interface. asm-generic: Make time32 syscall numbers optional
We don't want new architectures to even provide the old 32-bit time_t based system calls any more, or define the syscall number macros. Add a new __ARCH_WANT_TIME32_SYSCALLS macro that gets enabled for all existing 32-bit architectures using the generic system call table, so we don't change any current behavior. Since this symbol is evaluated in user space as well, we cannot use a Kconfig CONFIG_* macro but have to define it in uapi/asm/unistd.h. On 64-bit architectures, the same system call numbers mostly refer to the system calls we want to keep, as they already pass 64-bit time_t. asm-generic: Drop getrlimit and setrlimit syscalls from default list
The newer prlimit64 syscall provides all the functionality of getrlimit and setrlimit syscalls and adds the pid of target process, so future architectures won't need to include getrlimit and setrlimit. Therefore drop getrlimit and setrlimit syscalls from the generic syscall list unless __ARCH_WANT_SET_GET_RLIMIT is defined by the architecture's unistd.h prior to including asm-generic/unistd.h, and adjust all architectures using the generic syscall list to define it so that no in-tree architectures are affected. The netfilter conflicts were rather simple overlapping changes. However, the cls_tcindex.c stuff was a bit more complex. On the 'net' side, Cong is fixing several races and memory leaks. Whilst on the 'net-next' side we have Vlad adding the rtnl-ness support. What I've decided to do, in order to resolve this, is revert the conversion over to using a workqueue that Cong did, bringing us back to pure RCU. y2038: add 64-bit time_t syscalls to all 32-bit architectures
This adds 21 new system calls on each ABI that has 32-bit time_t today. All of these have the exact same semantics as their existing counterparts, and the new ones all have macro names that end in 'time64' for clarification. This gets us to the point of being able to safely use a C library that has 64-bit time_t in user space. There are still a couple of loose ends to tie up in various areas of the code, but this is the big one, and should be entirely uncontroversial at this point. In particular, there are four system calls (getitimer, setitimer, waitid, and getrusage) that don't have a 64-bit counterpart yet, but these can all be safely implemented in the C library by wrapping around the existing system calls because the 32-bit time_t they pass only counts elapsed time, not time since the epoch. They will be dealt with later. This is the big flip, where all 32-bit architectures set COMPAT_32BIT_TIME and use the _time32 system calls from the former compat layer instead of the system calls that take __kernel_timespec and similar arguments. The temporary redirects for __kernel_timespec, __kernel_itimerspec and __kernel_timex can get removed with this. It would be easy to split this commit by architecture, but with the new generated system call tables, it's easy enough to do it all at once, which makes it a little easier to check that the changes are the same in each table. y2038: syscalls: rename y2038 compat syscalls
A lot of system calls that pass a time_t somewhere have an implementation using a COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() on 64-bit architectures, and have been reworked so that this implementation can now be used on 32-bit architectures as well. The missing step is to redefine them using the regular SYSCALL_DEFINEx() to get them out of the compat namespace and make it possible to build them on 32-bit architectures. Any system call that ends in 'time' gets a '32' suffix on its name for that version, while the others get a '_time32' suffix, to distinguish them from the normal version, which takes a 64-bit time argument in the future. In this step, only 64-bit architectures are changed, doing this rename first lets us avoid touching the 32-bit architectures twice. socket: Rename SO_RCVTIMEO/ SO_SNDTIMEO with _OLD suffixes
SO_RCVTIMEO and SO_SNDTIMEO socket options use struct timeval as the time format. struct timeval is not y2038 safe. The subsequent patches in the series add support for new socket timeout options with _NEW suffix that will use y2038 safe data structures. Although the existing struct timeval layout is sufficiently wide to represent timeouts, because of the way libc will interpret time_t based on user defined flag, these new flags provide a way of having a structure that is the same for all architectures consistently. Rename the existing options with _OLD suffix forms so that the right option is enabled for userspace applications according to the architecture and time_t definition of libc. sockopt: Rename SO_TIMESTAMP* to SO_TIMESTAMP*_OLD
SO_TIMESTAMP, SO_TIMESTAMPNS and SO_TIMESTAMPING options, the way they are currently defined, are not y2038 safe. Subsequent patches in the series add new y2038 safe versions of these options which provide 64 bit timestamps on all architectures uniformly. Hence, rename existing options with OLD tag suffixes. Also note that kernel will not use the untagged SO_TIMESTAMP* and SCM_TIMESTAMP* options internally anymore. arch: add split IPC system calls where needed
The IPC system call handling is highly inconsistent across architectures, some use sys_ipc, some use separate calls, and some use both. We also have some architectures that require passing IPC_64 in the flags, and others that set it implicitly. For the addition of a y2038 safe semtimedop() system call, I chose to only support the separate entry points, but that requires first supporting the regular ones with their own syscall numbers. The IPC_64 is now implied by the new semctl/shmctl/msgctl system calls even on the architectures that require passing it with the ipc() multiplexer. I'm not adding the new semtimedop() or semop() on 32-bit architectures, those will get implemented using the new semtimedop_time64() version that gets added along with the other time64 calls. Three 64-bit architectures (powerpc, s390 and sparc) get semtimedop(). net: introduce SO_BINDTOIFINDEX sockopt
This introduces a new generic SOL_SOCKET-level socket option called SO_BINDTOIFINDEX. It behaves similar to SO_BINDTODEVICE, but takes a network interface index as argument, rather than the network interface name. User-space often refers to network-interfaces via their index, but has to temporarily resolve it to a name for a call into SO_BINDTODEVICE. This might pose problems when the network-device is renamed asynchronously by other parts of the system. When this happens, the SO_BINDTODEVICE might either fail, or worse, it might bind to the wrong device. In most cases user-space only ever operates on devices which they either manage themselves, or otherwise have a guarantee that the device name will not change (e.g., devices that are UP cannot be renamed). However, particularly in libraries this guarantee is non-obvious and it would be nice if that race-condition would simply not exist. It would make it easier for those libraries to operate even in situations where the device-name might change under the hood. A real use-case that we recently hit is trying to start the network stack early in the initrd but make it survive into the real system. Existing distributions rename network-interfaces during the transition from initrd into the real system. This, obviously, cannot affect devices that are up and running (unless you also consider moving them between network-namespaces). However, the network manager now has to make sure its management engine for dormant devices will not run in parallel to these renames. Particularly, when you offload operations like DHCP into separate processes, these might setup their sockets early, and thus have to resolve the device-name possibly running into this race-condition. By avoiding a call to resolve the device-name, we no longer depend on the name and can run network setup of dormant devices in parallel to the transition off the initrd. The SO_BINDTOIFINDEX ioctl plugs this race. Pull siginfo updates from Eric Biederman: "I have been slowly sorting out siginfo and this is the culmination of that work. The primary result is in several ways the signal infrastructure has been made less error prone. The code has been updated so that manually specifying SEND_SIG_FORCED is never necessary. The conversion to the new siginfo sending functions is now complete, which makes it difficult to send a signal without filling in the proper siginfo fields. At the tail end of the patchset comes the optimization of decreasing the size of struct siginfo in the kernel from 128 bytes to about 48 bytes on 64bit. The fundamental observation that enables this is by definition none of the known ways to use struct siginfo uses the extra bytes. This comes at the cost of a small user space observable difference. For the rare case of siginfo being injected into the kernel only what can be copied into kernel_siginfo is delivered to the destination, the rest of the bytes are set to 0. For cases where the signal and the si_code are known this is safe, because we know those bytes are not used. For cases where the signal and si_code combination is unknown the bits that won't fit into struct kernel_siginfo are tested to verify they are zero, and the send fails if they are not. I made an extensive search through userspace code and I could not find anything that would break because of the above change. If it turns out I did break something it will take just the revert of a single change to restore kernel_siginfo to the same size as userspace siginfo. Testing did reveal dependencies on preferring the signo passed to sigqueueinfo over si->signo, so bit the bullet and added the complexity necessary to handle that case. Testing also revealed bad things can happen if a negative signal number is passed into the system calls. Something no sane application will do but something a malicious program or a fuzzer might do.
