0df6ade711 perf evlist: Rename cpus to user_requested_cpus
evlist contains cpus and all_cpus. all_cpus is the union of the cpu maps
of all evsels.

For non-task targets, cpus is set to be cpus requested from the command
line, defaulting to all online cpus if no cpus are specified.

For an uncore event, all_cpus may be just CPU 0 or every online CPU.

This causes all_cpus to have fewer values than the cpus variable which
is confusing given the 'all' in the name.

To try to make the behavior clearer, rename cpus to user_requested_cpus
and add comments on the two struct variables.

6d18804b96 perf cpumap: Give CPUs their own type
A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping
the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to
atomic_t.

Committer notes:

To make it build with BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1 these files needed the
conversions to 'struct perf_cpu' usage:

  tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c
  tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c
  tools/perf/util/bpf_ftrace.c

Also perf_env__get_cpu() was removed back in "perf cpumap: Switch
cpu_map__build_map to cpu function".

Additionally these needed to be fixed for the ARM builds to complete:

  tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
  tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/pmu.c

83869019c7 perf arch: Support register names from all archs
When reading a perf.data file with register values, there is a mismatch
between the names and the values of the registers because the tool is
built using only the register names from the local architecture.

Reading a perf.data file that was recorded on ARM64, gives the following
erroneous output on an X86 machine:

As can be seen, the register names correspond to X86 registers, even
though the perf.data file was recorded on an ARM64 system. After this
patch, the output of the command displays the correct register names:

7cc9680c4b perf cs-etm: Remove duplicate and incorrect aux size checks
There are two checks, one is for size when running without admin, but
this one is covered by the driver and reported on in more detail here
(builtin-record.c):

  pr_err("Permission error mapping pages.\n"
         "Consider increasing "
         "/proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_mlock_kb,\n"
"or try again with a smaller value of -m/--mmap_pages.\n"
         "(current value: %u,%u)\n",

This had the effect of artificially limiting the aux buffer size to a
value smaller than what was allowed because perf_event_mlock_kb wasn't
taken into account.

The second is to check for a power of two, but this is covered here
(evlist.c):

  pr_info("rounding mmap pages size to %s (%lu pages)\n",
          buf, pages);

Also the DEFINE_SUITE(vectors_page) should be done where its function is
implemented, in tools/perf/arch/arm/tests/vectors-page.c, so that we can
make it static, as we don't have anymore its declaration in tests.h.

474b3f2882 perf auxtrace arm: Support compat_auxtrace_mmap__{read_head|write_tail}
When the tool runs with compat mode on Arm platform, the kernel is in
64-bit mode and user space is in 32-bit mode; the user space can use
instructions "ldrd" and "strd" for 64-bit value atomicity.

This patch adds compat_auxtrace_mmap__{read_head|write_tail} for arm
building, it uses "ldrd" and "strd" instructions to ensure accessing
atomicity for aux head and tail. The file arch/arm/util/auxtrace.c is
built for arm and arm64 building, these two functions are not needed for
arm64, so check the compiler macro "__arm__" to only include them for
arm building.

2f01c200d4 perf cs-etm: Remove callback cs_etm_find_snapshot()
The callback cs_etm_find_snapshot() is invoked for snapshot mode, its
main purpose is to find the correct AUX trace data and returns "head"
and "old" (we can call "old" as "old head") to the caller, the caller
__auxtrace_mmap__read() uses these two pointers to decide the AUX trace
data size.

This patch removes cs_etm_find_snapshot() with below reasons:

- The first thing in cs_etm_find_snapshot() is to check if the head has
wrapped around, if it is not, directly bails out. The checking is
pointless, this is because the "head" and "old" pointers both are
monotonical increasing so they never wrap around.

- cs_etm_find_snapshot() adjusts the "head" and "old" pointers and
assumes the AUX ring buffer is fully filled with the hardware trace
data, so it always subtracts the difference "mm->len" from "head" to
get "old". Let's imagine the snapshot is taken in very short
interval, the tracers only fill a small chunk of the trace data into
the AUX ring buffer, in this case, it's wrongly to copy the whole the
AUX ring buffer to perf file.

- As the "head" and "old" pointers are monotonically increased, the
function __auxtrace_mmap__read() handles these two pointers properly.
It calculates the reminders for these two pointers, and the size is
clamped to be never more than "snapshot_size". We can simply reply on
the function __auxtrace_mmap__read() to calculate the correct result
for data copying, it's not necessary to add Arm CoreSight specific
  callback.

This patch updates the per CPU parameter blocks to include a NR_PARAMs

new ETM parameters are added to the end of the list.

The reader code is updated to be able to read current version 0 files,
For version 1, the reader will read the number of parameters in the

that may have different numbers of parameters than in use at the

The current code can only work if the only event to be traced is an
'arm_spe_x', or if it is the last event to be specified. Otherwise the
last event type will be checked against all the arm_spe_pmus[i]->types,
none will match and an out of bound 'i' index will be used in
arm_spe_recording_init().

We don't support concurrent multiple arm_spe_x events currently, that
is checked in arm_spe_recording_options(), and it will show the relevant
info. So add the check and record of the first found 'arm_spe_pmu' to
fix this issue here.

e884602b57 perf parse: Refactor 'struct perf_evsel_config_term'
The struct perf_evsel_config_term::val is a union which contains fields
'callgraph', 'drv_cfg' and 'branch' as string pointers. This leads to
the complex code logic for handling every type's string separately, and
it's hard to release string as a general way.

This patch refactors the structure to add a common field 'str' in the
'val' union as string pointer and remove the other three fields
'callgraph', 'drv_cfg' and 'branch'. Without passing field name, the
patch simplifies the string handling with macro ADD_CONFIG_TERM_STR()
for string pointer assignment.

This patch fixes multiple warnings of line over 80 characters detected
by checkpatch tool.

79b6bb73f8 perf maps: Merge 'struct maps' with 'struct map_groups'
And pick the shortest name: 'struct maps'.

The split existed because we used to have two groups of maps, one for
functions and one for variables, but that only complicated things,
sometimes we needed to figure out what was at some address and then had
to first try it on the functions group and if that failed, fall back to
the variables one.

That split is long gone, so for quite a while we had only one struct
maps per struct map_groups, simplify things by combining those structs.

First patch is the minimum needed to merge both, follow up patches will
rename 'thread->mg' to 'thread->maps', etc.

42466b9f29 perf tools: Avoid 'sample_reg_masks' being const + weak
Being const + weak breaks with some compilers that constant-propagate
from the weak symbol. This behavior is outside of the specification, but
in LLVM is chosen to match GCC's behavior.

LLVM's implementation was set in this patch:

  f49573d1ee

A const + weak symbol is set to be weak_odr:

  https://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html

ODR is one definition rule, and given there is one constant definition
constant-propagation is possible. It is possible to get this code to
miscompile with LLVM when applying link time optimization. As compilers
become more aggressive, this is likely to break in more instances.

Move the definition of sample_reg_masks to the conditional part of
perf_regs.h and guard usage with HAVE_PERF_REGS_SUPPORT. This avoids the
weak symbol.

Fix an issue when HAVE_PERF_REGS_SUPPORT isn't defined from patch v1.
In v3, add perf_regs.c for architectures that HAVE_PERF_REGS_SUPPORT but
don't declare sample_regs_masks.

Further notes:

Jiri asked:

"Is this just a precaution or you actualy saw some breakage?"

Ian answered:

"We saw a breakage with clang with thinlto enabled for linking. Our
compiler team had recently seen, and were surprised by, a similar issue
and were able to dig out the weak ODR issue."
