ec268be36e [PATCH] translate dashes in filenames for headers install
The current filename->define translation does not scrub dashes so when
creating stub defines for like asm-x86_64/ptrace-abi.h, we get: #define
__ASM_STUB_PTRACE-ABI_H

gcc just hates that sort of thing :)

trivial attached patch adds - to the tr list to scrub it to _

ee6a8545a4 [PATCH] x86-64: Modpost whitelist reference to more symbols (pattern 3)
o MODPOST generates warning on i386 if kernel is compiled with
  CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=y.

WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:__init_begin from .text between 'free_initmem' (at offset 0xc0114fd3) and 'do_test_wp_bit'
WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:_sinittext from .text between 'core_kernel_text' (at offset 0xc012aeae) and 'kernel_text_address'
WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:_einittext from .text between 'core_kernel_text' (at offset 0xc012aeb7) and 'kernel_text_address'
WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:_sinittext from .text between 'get_symbol_pos' (at offset 0xc0135776) and 'reset_iter'
WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:_einittext from .text between 'get_symbol_pos' (at offset 0xc013577d) and 'reset_iter'

o These symbols (__init_begin, _sinittext, _einittext) belong to init
section and generally represent a section boundary. These are special
symbols in the sense that their size is zero and no memory is allocated
for them in init section. Their addr and value are same. So even if
we free the init section, it is ok to reference them.

o Whitelist access to such select symbols in MODPOST.

118c0ace1b [PATCH] x86-64: modpost add more symbols to whitelist pattern2
o MODPOST generates warning for i386 if compiled with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=y
and serial console support is enabled.

o Serial console setup function, serial8250_console_setup(), is a non __init
function and it calls functions which are of type __init().
(uart_parse_options() and uart_set_options()). Assuming, setup will
be called during init time, changing serial8250_console_setup() to __init.

o Adding one more pattern to modpost whitelist. Console drivers might
have *_console structures containing references to setup functions which
can be of __init type. Don't generate warnings for those.

WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text: from .data between 'serial8250_console' (at offset 0xc05a33d8) and 'serial8250_reg'

bfc10001b1 [PATCH] kconfig: make sym_change_count static, let it be altered by 2 functions only
Those two functions are
	void sym_set_change_count(int count)
and
	void sym_add_change_count(int count)

All write accesses to sym_change_count are replaced by calls to above
functions.

Variable and changer-functions are moved to confdata.c. IMO thats ok, as
sym_change_count is an attribute of the .config's change state.

b321429325 [PATCH] kconfig: new function "bool conf_get_changed(void)"
Run "make xconfig" on a freshly untarred kernel-tree. Look at the floppy disk
icon of the qt application, that has just started: Its in a normal, active
state.

Mouse click on it: .config is being saved.

This patch series changes things so taht
after the mouse click on the floppy disk icon, the icon is greyed out.
If you mouse click on it now, nothing happens.

If you change some CONFIG_*, the floppy disk icon returns to "active state",
that is, if you mouse click it now, .config is written.

This patch:

Returns sym_change_count to reflect the .config's change state.
All read only accesses of
	sym_change_count
are replaced by calls to
	conf_get_changed()
.
mconfig.c is manipulated to ask for saving only when
conf_get_changed() returned true.

139ec7c416 [PATCH] paravirt: Patch inline replacements for paravirt intercepts
It turns out that the most called ops, by several orders of magnitude,
are the interrupt manipulation ops. These are obvious candidates for
patching, so mark them up and create infrastructure for it.

The method used is that the ops structure has a patch function, which
is called for each place which needs to be patched: this returns a
number of instructions (the rest are NOP-padded).

Usually we can spare a register (%eax) for the binary patched code to
use, but in a couple of critical places in entry.S we can't: we make
the clobbers explicit at the call site, and manually clobber the
allowed registers in debug mode as an extra check.

And:

Don't abuse CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL, add CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT.

And:

AK: Fix warnings in x86-64 alternative.c build

And:

AK: Fix compilation with defconfig

And:

^From: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org>

Some binutlises still like to emit references to __stop_parainstructions and
__start_parainstructions.

a26d79ca81 [PATCH] initramfs: handle more than one source dir or file list
Fix bug 7401.

Handle more than one source dir or file list to the initramfs gen scripts.

The Kconfig help for INITRAMFS_SOURCE claims that you can specify multiple
space-separated sources in order to allow unprivileged users to build an
image. There are two bugs in the current implementation that prevent this
from working.

First, we pass "file1 dir2" to the gen_initramfs_list.sh script, which it
obviously can't open.

Second, gen_initramfs_list.sh -l outputs multiple definitions for
deps_initramfs -- one for each argument.

f2443ab6c4 [PATCH] allow /proc/config.gz to be built as a module
The driver for /proc/config.gz consumes rather a lot of memory and it is in
fact possible to build it as a module.

In some ways this is a bit risky, because the .config which is used for
compiling kernel/configs.c isn't necessarily the same as the .config which was
used to build vmlinux.

But OTOH the potential memory savings are decent, and it'd be fairly dumb to
build your configs.o with a different .config.

2982de6993 kconfig/menuconfig: lxdialog is now built-in
lxdialog was previously called as an external program causing screen

It is loosly based om previous work by: Petr Baudis <pasky@ucw.cz>

Following is a list of changes:
o Moved build of dialog routings to kconfig Makefile
o menubox + checklist uses a new item list to hold all menu items
o in util.c implmented helper function to deal with item list
o menubox now uses parameters to save scroll state (avoids temp file)
o textbox now get text to be displayed as parameter and not a file
o make sure to properly delete subwin's before main windows
o killed unused files: lxdialog.c msgbox.c
o modified return value for ESC to match direct calling
o in a few places the code has been adjusted to 80 char wide
o in textbox a small refactoring was made to make code remotely readable
o in mconf removed all unused stuff (functions/variables)

Following is a list of know short comings:
a) pressing ESC twice will be interpreted as two ESC presses
b) resize does not work. menuconfig needs to be restarted to be adjusted

07563c711f [PATCH] EISA bus MODALIAS attributes support
Add modalias attribute support for the almost forgotten now EISA bus and
(at least some) EISA-aware modules.

The modalias entry looks like (for an 3c509 NIC):

 eisa:sTCM5093

and the in-module alias like:

 eisa:sTCM5093*

The patch moves struct eisa_device_id declaration from include/linux/eisa.h
to include/linux/mod_devicetable.h (so that the former now #includes the
latter), adds proper MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(eisa, ...) statements for all
drivers with EISA IDs I found (some drivers already have that DEVICE_TABLE
declared), and adds recognision of __mod_eisa_device_table to
scripts/mod/file2alias.c so that proper modules.alias will be generated.

There's no support for /lib/modules/$kver/modules.eisamap, as it's not used
by any existing tools, and because with in-kernel modalias mechanism those
maps are obsolete anyway.

The rationale for this patch is:

 a) to make EISA bus to act as other busses with modalias
    support, to unify driver loading

 b) to foget about EISA finally - with this patch, kernel
(who still supports EISA) will be the only one who knows
how to choose the necessary drivers for this bus ;)

adf1423698 [PATCH] i386/x86-64: Work around gcc bug with noreturn functions in unwinder
Current gcc generates calls not jumps to noreturn functions. When that happens the
return address can point to the next function, which confuses the unwinder.

This patch works around it by marking asynchronous exception
frames in contrast normal call frames in the unwind information. Then teach
the unwinder to decode this.

For normal call frames the unwinder now subtracts one from the address which avoids
this problem. The standard libgcc unwinder uses the same trick.

It doesn't include adjustment of the printed address (i.e. for the original
example, it'd still be kernel_math_error+0 that gets displayed, but the
unwinder wouldn't get confused anymore.

This only works with binutils 2.6.17+ and some versions of H.J.Lu's 2.6.16
unfortunately because earlier binutils don't support .cfi_signal_frame

1534c3820c [S390] zcrypt adjunct processor bus.
Add a bus for the adjunct processor interface. Up to 64 devices can
be connect to the ap bus interface, each device with 16 domains. That
makes 1024 message queues. The interface is asynchronous, the answer
to a message sent to a queue needs to be received at some later point
in time. Unfortunately the interface does not provide interrupts when
a message reply is pending. So the ap bus needs to implement some
fancy polling, each active queue is polled once per 1/HZ second or
continuously if an idle cpus exsists and the poll thread is activ
(see poll_thread parameter).

The ap bus uses the sysfs path /sys/bus/ap and has two bus attributes,
ap_domain and config_time. The ap_domain selects one of the 16 domains
to be used for this system. This limits the maximum number of ap devices
to 64. The config_time attribute contains the number of seconds between
two ap bus scans to find new devices.

The ap bus uses the modalias entries of the form "ap:tN" to autoload
the ap driver for hardware type N. Currently known types are:
3 - PCICC, 4 - PCICA, 5 - PCIXCC, 6 - CEX2A and 7 - CEX2C.

b512217736 [PATCH] Fix 'make headers_check' on biarch architectures
We generate an <asm/foo.h> which includes either <asm-$ARCH/foo.h> or
<asm-$ALTARCH/foo.h> as appropriate. But we were doing this dependent on
whether the file in question existed in the _unexported_ tree, not the
exported tree. So if a file was exported to userspace in one asm- directory
but not the other, the generated file in asm/ was incorrect.

This only changed the failure mode if it _was_ included from a nice #error to
a less explicable #include failure -- but it also gave false errors in 'make
headers_check' output. Fix it by looking in the right place instead.

e0e9263271 [PATCH] PATCH: 1 line 2.6.18 bugfix: modpost-64bit-fix.patch
There is a small but annoying bug in scripts/mod/file2alias.c which causes
it to generate invalid aliases for input devices on 64 bit archs. This causes
joydev.ko to not be automaticly loaded when inserting a joystick, resulting in
a non working joystick (for the average user).

In scripts/mod/file2alias.c is the following code for generating the input
aliases:
static void do_input(char *alias,
kernel_ulong_t *arr, unsigned int min, unsigned int max)
{
        unsigned int i;

        for (i = min; i < max; i++)
                if (arr[i / BITS_PER_LONG] & (1 << (i%BITS_PER_LONG)))
                        sprintf(alias + strlen(alias), "%X,*", i);
}

On 32 bits systems, this correctly generates "0,*" for the first alias, "8,*"
for the second etc.

However on 64 bits it generates: "0,*20,*" resp "8,*28,*" Notice how it adds 20
+ first entry (hex) ! to the list of hex codes, which is 32 more then the first
entry, thus is because the bit test above wraps at 32 bits instead of 64.

scripts/mod/file2alias.c, line 379 reads:
                if (arr[i / BITS_PER_LONG] & (1 << (i%BITS_PER_LONG)))
That should be:
                if (arr[i / BITS_PER_LONG] & (1L << (i%BITS_PER_LONG)))

Notice the added 'L' after the 1, otherwise that is an 32 bit int instead of a
64 bit long, and when that int gets shifted >= 32 times, appearantly the number
by which to shift is wrapped at 5 bits ( % 32) causing it to test a bit 32 bits
too low.

The patch below makes the nescesarry 1 char change :)

0b0bf7a3cc [PATCH] vDSO hash-style fix
The latest toolchains can produce a new ELF section in DSOs and
dynamically-linked executables. The new section ".gnu.hash" replaces
".hash", and allows for more efficient runtime symbol lookups by the
dynamic linker. The new ld option --hash-style={sysv|gnu|both} controls
whether to produce the old ".hash", the new ".gnu.hash", or both. In some
new systems such as Fedora Core 6, gcc by default passes --hash-style=gnu
to the linker, so that a standard invocation of "gcc -shared" results in
producing a DSO with only ".gnu.hash". The new ".gnu.hash" sections need
to be dealt with the same way as ".hash" sections in all respects; only the
dynamic linker cares about their contents. To work with older dynamic
linkers (i.e. preexisting releases of glibc), a binary must have the old
".hash" section. The --hash-style=both option produces binaries that a new
dynamic linker can use more efficiently, but an old dynamic linker can
still handle.

The new section runs afoul of the custom linker scripts used to build vDSO
images for the kernel. On ia64, the failure mode for this is a boot-time
panic because the vDSO's PT_IA_64_UNWIND segment winds up ill-formed.

This patch addresses the problem in two ways.

First, it mentions ".gnu.hash" in all the linker scripts alongside ".hash".
This produces correct vDSO images with --hash-style=sysv (or old tools),
with --hash-style=gnu, or with --hash-style=both.

Second, it passes the --hash-style=sysv option when building the vDSO
images, so that ".gnu.hash" is not actually produced. This is the most
conservative choice for compatibility with any old userland. There is some
concern that some ancient glibc builds (though not any known old production
system) might choke on --hash-style=both binaries. The optimizations
provided by the new style of hash section do not really matter for a DSO
with a tiny number of symbols, as the vDSO has. If someone wants to use
=gnu or =both for their vDSO builds and worry less about that
compatibility, just change the option and the linker script changes will
make any choice work fine.

This was used in several places all over kbuild, but introducing

850622dfaf [PATCH] kernel-doc: warn on malformed function docs.
When the verbose (-v) option is used with scripts/kernel-doc, this option
reports when the kernel-doc format is malformed and apparently contains
function description lines before function parameters. In these cases, the

I have fixed the problems in mm/filemap.c and added lots of kernel-doc to
that file (posted to the linux-mm mailing list Mon. 2006-June-12).

The real goal (as requested by Andrew Morton) is to allow the short

8ad2914d9c [PATCH] checkstack: print module names
Finding "init_module" high stack usage problems is challenging when there
are over 1600 "init_module" functions in the kernel tree, so make
checkstack.pl print out the filename where the stack usage occurs. This is
useful for code built as loadable modules.

For built-in code, it just prints the kernel image file name, like
"vmlinux". Examples:

(before patch:)
0x0000000d callback: 1928
0xffffffff81678c09 huft_build: 1560
0x0018 init_module: 1512

(after patch:)
0x0000000d callback [divacapi]: 1928
0xffffffff81678c09 huft_build [vmlinux]: 1560
0x0018 init_module [hdaps]: 1512

15fde67518 kbuild: support for %.symtypes files
Here is a patch that adds a new -T option to genksyms for generating dumps of
the type definition that makes up the symbol version hashes. This allows to
trace modversion changes back to what caused them. The dump format is the
name of the type defined, followed by its definition (which is almost C):

  s#list_head struct list_head { s#list_head * next , * prev ; }

The s#, u#, e#, and t# prefixes stand for struct, union, enum, and typedef.
The exported symbols do not define types, and thus do not have an x# prefix:

  nfs4_acl_get_whotype int nfs4_acl_get_whotype ( char * , t#u32 )

The symbol type defintion of a single file can be generated with:

  make fs/jbd/journal.symtypes

If KBUILD_SYMTYPES is defined, all the *.symtypes of all object files that
export symbols are generated.

The single *.symtypes files can be combined into a single file after a kernel
build with a script like the following:

for f in $(find -name '*.symtypes' | sort); do
    f=${f#./}
    echo "/* ${f%.symtypes}.o */"
    cat $f
    echo
done \
| sed -e '\:UNKNOWN:d' \
      -e 's:[,;] }:}:g' \
      -e 's:\([[({]\) :\1:g' \
      -e 's: \([])},;]\):\1:g' \
      -e 's: $::' \
      $f \
| awk '
/^.#/   { if (defined[$1] == $0) {
            print $1
            next
          }
          defined[$1] = $0
        }
        { print }
'

When the kernel ABI changes, diffing individual *.symtype files, or the
combined files, against each other will show which symbol changes caused the
ABI changes. This can save a tremendous amount of time.

ac031f26e8 kbuild: add option for stripping modules while installing them
Add option for stripping modules while installing them.

This function adds support for stripping modules while they are being
installed. CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL (which will probably become more
popular as developers use kdump) causes the size of the installed
modules to grow by a factor of 9 or so.

Some kernel package systems solve this problem by stripping the debug
information from /lib/modules after running "make modules_install",
but that may not work for people who are installing directly into
/lib/modules --- root partitions that were sized to handle 16 megs
worth of modules may not be quite so happy with 145 megs of modules,
so the "make modules_install" never succeeds.

This patch allows such users to request modules_install to strip the
modules as they are installed.

c955ccafc3 kconfig: fix .config dependencies
This fixes one of the worst kbuild warts left - the broken dependencies used
to check and regenerate the .config file. This was done via an indirect
dependency and the .config itself had an empty command, which can cause make
not to reread the changed .config file.

Instead of this we generate now a new file include/config/auto.conf from
.config, which is used for kbuild and has the proper dependencies. It's also
the main make target now for all files generated during this step (and thus
replaces include/linux/autoconf.h).

This also means we can now relax the syntax requirements for the .config file
and we don't have to rewrite it all the time, i.e. silentoldconfig only
writes .config now when it's necessary to keep it in sync with the Kconfig
files and even this can be suppressed by setting the environment variable
KCONFIG_NOSILENTUPDATE, so the update can (and must) be done manually.

5ecdd0f67c kbuild: fix false section mismatch warnings
Darren Jenkins <darrenrjenkins@gmail.com> pointed out a
number of false positives where we referenced variables
from a _driver variable.
Fix it by check for that pattern and ignore it.

Randy.Dunlap <rdunlap@xenotime.net> pointed out a similar
set of warnings for a number of scsi drivers.
In scsi world they misname their variables *_template or
*_sht so add these to list of variables that may have references
to .init.text with no warning.

Randy.Dunlap <rdunlap@xenotime.net> also pointed out a scsi driver
with many references to .exit.text from .rodata. This is compiler
generated references and we already ignore these for .init.text, so
ignore them for .exit.text also.

d39a206bc3 kbuild: rebuild initramfs if content of initramfs changes
initramfs.cpio.gz being build in usr/ and included in the
kernel was not rebuild when the included files changed.

To fix this the following was done:
- let gen_initramfs.sh generate a list of files and directories included
  in the initramfs
- gen_initramfs generate the gzipped cpio archive so we could simplify
  the kbuild file (Makefile)
- utilising the kbuild infrastructure so when uid/gid root mapping changes
  the initramfs will be rebuild

With this change we have a much more robust initramfs generation.

4bdc3b7f1b [PATCH] x86_64: Basic reorder infrastructure
This patch puts the infrastructure in place to allow for a reordering of
functions based inside the vmlinux. The general idea is that it is possible
to put all "common" functions into the first 2Mb of the code, so that they
are covered by one TLB entry. This as opposed to the current situation where
a typical vmlinux covers about 3.5Mb (on x86-64) and thus 2 TLB entries.

This is done by enabling the -ffunction-sections flag in gcc, which puts
each function in its own ELF section, so that the linker can then order them
in a way defined by the linker script.

As per previous discussions, Linus said he wanted a "static" list for this,
eg a list provided by the kernel tarbal, so that most people have the same
ordering at least. A script is provided to create this list based on
readprofile(1) output. The included list is provisional, and entirely biased
on my own testbox and me running a few kernel compiles and some other
things.

I think that to get to a better list we need to invite people to submit
their own profiles, and somehow add those all up and base the final list on
that. I'm willing to do that effort if this is ends up being the prefered
approach. Such an effort probably needs to be repeated like once a year or
so to adopt to the changing nature of the kernel.

Made it a CONFIG with default n because it increases link times
dramatically.

4f1933620f kbuild: change kbuild to not rely on incorrect GNU make behavior
The kbuild system takes advantage of an incorrect behavior in GNU make.
Once this behavior is fixed, all files in the kernel rebuild every time,
even if nothing has changed. This patch ensures kbuild works with both
the incorrect and correct behaviors of GNU make.

For more details on the incorrect behavior, see:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-make/2006-03/msg00003.html

Changes in this patch:
  - Keep all targets that are to be marked .PHONY in a variable, PHONY.
  - Add .PHONY: $(PHONY) to mark them properly.

    targets are up-to-date or not.

96678281bf kbuild: fix mkmakefile
With the current way of generating the Makefile in the output directory
for builds outside of the source tree, specifying real targets (rather
than phony ones) doesn't work in an already (partially) built tree, as
the stub Makefile doesn't have any dependency information available.
Thus, all targets where files may actually exist must be listed
explicitly and, due to what I'd call a make misbehavior, directory
targets must then also be special cased.

6176aa9ae4 kbuild: consolidate command line escaping
While the recent change to also escape # symbols when storing C-file
compilation command lines was helpful, it should be in effect for all
command lines, as much as the dollar escaping should be in effect for
C-source compilation commands. Additionally, for better readability and
maintenance, consolidating all the escaping (single quotes, dollars,
and now sharps) was also desirable.

b39927cf4c kbuild: check for section mismatch during modpost stage
Section mismatch is identified as references to .init*
sections from non .init sections. And likewise references
to .exit.* sections outside .exit sections.

.init.* sections are discarded after a module is initialized
and references to .init.* sections are oops candidates.
.exit.* sections are discarded when a module is built-in and
thus references to .exit are also oops candidates.

The checks were possible to do using 'make buildcheck' which
called the two perl scripts: reference_discarded.pl and
reference_init.pl. This patch just moves the same functionality
inside modpost and the scripts are then obsoleted.
They will though be kept for a while so users can do double
checks - but note that some .o files are skipped by the perl scripts
so result is not 1:1.
All credit for the concept goes to Keith Owens who implemented
the original perl scrips - this patch just moves it to modpost.

Compared to the perl script the implmentation in modpost will be run
for each kernel build - thus catching the error much sooner, but
the downside is that the individual .o file are not always identified.

040fcc819a kbuild: improved modversioning support for external modules
With following patch a second option is enabled to obtain
symbol information from a second external module when a
external module is build.
The recommended approach is to use a common kbuild file but
that may be impractical in certain cases.
With this patch one can copy over a Module.symvers from one
external module to make symbols (and symbol versions) available
for another external module.

5e375bc7d5 [PATCH] kconfig: detect if -lintl is needed when linking conf, mconf
On a system where libintl.h is present, but the NLS functionality is
supplied by a separate library instead of the system C library, an attempt
to "make config" or "make menuconfig" will fail with link errors, ex:

  scripts/kconfig/mconf.o:mconf.c:(.text+0xf63): undefined reference to
    `_libintl_gettext'

This patch attempts to correct the problem by detecting whether or not NLS
support requires linking with libintl.

3835f82183 kconfig: fix /dev/null breakage
While running "make menuconfig" and "make mrproper"
some people experienced that /dev/null suddenly changed
permissions or suddenly became a regular file.
The main reason was that /dev/null was used as output
to gcc in the check-lxdialog.sh script and gcc did
some strange things with the output file; in this
case /dev/null when it errorred out.

Following patch implements a suggestion
from Bryan O'Sullivan <bos@serpentine.com> to
use gcc -print-file-name=libxxx.so.

Also the Makefile is adjusted to not resolve value of
HOST_EXTRACFLAGS and HOST_LOADLIBES until they are actually used.
This prevents us from calling gcc when running make *clean/mrproper

Any idea why ppc .opd points to discarded sections when ia64 does not?
AFAICT no ia64 object has a useful .opd section, they are all empty or

117a93db1d kbuild: Use git in scripts/setlocalversion
Currently scripts/setlocalversion is a Perl script that tries to figure
out the current git commit ID of a repo without using git. It also
imports Digest::MD5 without using it and generally is too big for the
small task it does. :] And it always reports a git ID, even when the
HEAD is tagged -- this is a bug.

This patch replaces it with a Bourne Shell script that uses git
commands to do the same. I can't come up with a scenario where someone
would use a git repo and refuse to install git core at the same time,
so I think it's reasonable to assume git is available.

The new script also reports uncommitted changes by adding -git_dirty to
the version string. Obviously you can't see from that _what_ has been
changed from the last commit, so it's more of a reminder that you
forgot to commit something.

The script is easily extensible: simply add a check for Mercurial (or
whatever) below the git check.

Note: the script doesn't print a newline char anymore. That's only
because it was easier to implement it that way, not a feature (or bug).
'make kernelrelease' doesn't care.

Here's the patch for modalias support for input classes. It uses

a89a0a2354 kbuild: Fix genksyms handling of DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct foo_s *, bar);
This is a one-line change to parse.y.
To take advantage of this the scripts/genksyms/*_shipped files needs to

When a .c file contains:
DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct foo_s *, bar);

the .cpp output looks like:
__attribute__((__section__(".data.percpu"))) __typeof__(struct foo_s *) per_cpu__bar;

With the existing parse.y, the value inside the paranthesis of
__typeof__() does not evaluate as a type_specifier and therefore
per_cpu__bar does not get assigned a type for genksyms which results in
the EXPORT_PER_CPU_SYMBOL() not generating a CRC value.

I have compared the Modules.symvers with and without this
patch and for ia64's defconfig, the only change is:

f83b5e323f kbuild: set correct KBUILD_MODNAME when using well known kernel symbols as module names
This patch fixes a problem when we use well known kernel symbols as module
names.

For example, if module source name is current.c, idle_stack.c or etc.,
we have a bad KBUILD_MODNAME value.
For example, KBUILD_MODNAME will be "get_current()" instead of "current", or
"(init_thread_union.stack)" instead of "idle_task".

The trick is to define a stringify macro on the commandline - named
KBUILD_STR for namespace reasons - and then to stringify the module
name.

There are a few uses of KBUILD_MODNAME throughout the tree but the usage
is for debug and will not be harmed by this change so left untouched for now.

While at it KBUILD_BASENAME was changed too. Any spinlock usage in the
unix module would have created wrong section names without it.
Usage in spinlock.h fixed so it no longer stringify KBUILD_BASENAME.

9572b28faf kbuild: Fix crc-error warning on modules
This is the patch for the following issue:

In include/linux/module.h, "__crc_" and "__ksymtab_" are hard
coded to be the prefix for some kinds of symbols (CRC symbol and
ksymtab section). But in script /mod/modpost.c,
MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX##"__crc_" is used as the prefix to search CRC
symbols. So if an architecture (such as h8300 or Blackfin) defines
MODULE_SYMBOL_PREFIX as not NULL ("_"), modpost will always warn about
"no invalid crc".
And it is the same with KSYMTAB_PFX.

3f04e7ddf4 [PATCH] kconfig: Fix Kconfig performance bug
When doing its recursive dependency check, scripts/kconfig/conf uses the flag
SYMBOL_CHECK_DONE to avoid rechecking a symbol it has already checked.
However, that flag is only set at the top level, so if a symbol is first
encountered as a dependency of another symbol it will be rechecked every time
it is encountered until it's encountered at the top level.

This patch adjusts the flag setting so that each symbol will only be checked
once, regardless of whether it is first encountered at the top level, or while
recursing down from another symbol. On complex configurations, this vastly
speeds up scripts/kconfig/conf. The config in the powerpc merge tree is
particularly bad: this patch reduces the time for 'scripts/kconfig/conf -o
arch/powerpc/Kconfig' by a factor of 40 on a G5. That's even including the
time to print the config, so the speedup in the actual checking is more likely
2 or 3 orders of magnitude.

b3dbb4ecd4 [PATCH] kallsyms: change compression algorithm
This patch changes the way the compression algorithm works. The base
algorithm is similiar to the previous but we force the compressed token
size to 2.

Having a fixed size compressed token allows for a lot of optimizations, and
that in turn allows this code to run over *all* the symbols faster than it
did before over just a subset.

Having it work over all the symbols will make it behave better when symbols
change positions between passes, and the "inconsistent kallsyms" messages
should become less frequent.

In my tests the compression ratio was degraded by about 0.5%, but the
results will depend greatly on the number of symbols to compress.

db8c1a7b2c kbuild: fix building external modules
kbuild failed to locate Makefile for external modules.
This brought to my attention how the variables for directories
have different values in different usage scenarios.

Different kbuild usage scenarios:
make - plain make in same directory where kernel source lives
make O= - kbuild is told to store output files in another directory
make M= - building an external module
make O= M= - building an external module with kernel output seperate from src

Value assigned to the different variables:

           |$(src) |$(obj) |$(srctree) |$(objtree)
make |reldir to k src |as src |abs path to k src |abs path to k src
make O= |reldir to k src |as src |abs path to k src |abs path to output dir
make M= |abs path to src |as src |abs path to k src |abs path to k src
make O= M= |abs path to src |as src |abs path to k src |abs path to k output

path to kbuild file:

make | $(srctree)/$(src), $(src)
make O= | $(srctree)/$(src)
make M= | $(src)
make O= M= | $(src)

From the table above it can be seen that the only good way to find the
home directory of the kbuild file is to locate the one of the two variants
that is an absolute path. If $(src) is an absolute path (starts with /)
then use it, otherwise prefix $(src) with $(srctree).

From: Ryan Anderson <ryan@michonline.com>

Make the deb-pkg build target understand the "um" arch and set up the
package and directory structure to match a mainline-Debian style
user-mode-linux package.

This is primarily so that it stops matching, exactly, the naming
convention used by normal, non-UML kernels generated by this command.

Installing "linux-2.6.11" and "linux-2.6.11", where one is a UML kernel
doesn't do the right thing. This fixes that.

b95d4fec89 [PATCH] kbuild: modpost needs to cope with new glibc elf header on sparc
Recently a change in the glibc elf.h header has been introduced causing
modpost to spawn tons of warnings (like the one below) building the kernel
on sparc:

[SNIP]
*** Warning: "current_thread_info_reg" [net/sunrpc/auth_gss/auth_rpcgss.ko] undefined!
*** Warning: "" [net/sunrpc/auth_gss/auth_rpcgss.ko] undefined!
*** Warning: "" [net/sunrpc/auth_gss/auth_rpcgss.ko] undefined!
[SNIP]

Ben Collins discovered that the STT_REGISTERED definition in glibc did change
and that this change needs to be propagated to modpost.

glibc change:
-#define STT_REGISTER 13 /* Global register reserved to app. */
+#define STT_SPARC_REGISTER 13 /* Global register reserved to app. */

I did and tested this simple patch to maintain compatibility with newer (>= 2.3.4)

1922163c8d [PATCH] patch-kernel: support non-incremental 2.6.x.y 'stable' patches
Add better support for (non-incremental) 2.6.x.y patches; If an ending
version number if not specified, the script automatically increments the
SUBLEVEL (x in 2.6.x.y) until no more patch files are found; however,
EXTRAVERSION (y in 2.6.x.y) is never automatically incremented but must be
specified fully.

patch-kernel does not normally support reverse patching, but does so when
applying EXTRAVERSION (x.y) patches, so that moving from 2.6.11.y to
2.6.11.z is easy and handled by the script (reverse 2.6.11.y and apply
2.6.11.z).

3b9fa0931d [PATCH] Kconfig i18n support
This patch adds i18n support for make *config, allowing users to have the
config process in their own language.

No printk was harmed in the process, don't worry, so all the bug reports,
kernel messages, etc, remain in english, just the user tools to configure
the kernel are internationalized.

Users not interested in translations can just unset the related LANG,
LC_ALL, etc env variables and have the config process in plain english,
something like:

LANG= make menuconfig

is enough for having the whole config process in english. Or just don't
install any translation file.

Translations for brazilian portuguese are being done by a team of
volunteers at:

http://www.visionflex.inf.br/kernel_ptbr/pmwiki.php/Principal/Traducoes

To start the translation process:

  make update-po-config

This will generate the pot template named scripts/kconfig/linux.pot,
copy it to, say, ~/es.po, to start the translation for spanish.

To test your translation, as root issue this command:

  msgfmt -o /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/linux.mo ~/es.po

Replace "es" with your language code.

  Then execute, for instance:

  make menuconfig

The current patch doesn't use any optimization to reduce the size of the
generated .mo file, it is possible to use the config option as a key, but
this doesn't prevent the current patch from being used or the translations
done under the current scheme to be in any way lost if we chose to do any
kind of keying.

Thanks to Fabricio Vaccari for starting the pt_BR (brazilian portuguese)
translation effort, Thiago Maciera for helping me with the gconf.cc (QT
frontent) i18n coding and to all the volunteers that are already working on
the first translation, to pt_BR.

I left the question on whether to ship the translations with the stock kernel
sources to be discussed here, please share your suggestions.

4dc3b16ba1 [PATCH] DocBook: changes and extensions to the kernel documentation
I have recompiled Linux kernel 2.6.11.5 documentation for me and our
university students again. The documentation could be extended for more
sources which are equipped by structured comments for recent 2.6 kernels. I
have tried to proceed with that task. I have done that more times from 2.6.0
time and it gets boring to do same changes again and again. Linux kernel
compiles after changes for i386 and ARM targets. I have added references to
some more files into kernel-api book, I have added some section names as well.
So please, check that changes do not break something and that categories are
not too much skewed.

I have changed kernel-doc to accept "fastcall" and "asmlinkage" words reserved
by kernel convention. Most of the other changes are modifications in the
comments to make kernel-doc happy, accept some parameters description and do
not bail out on errors. Changed <pid> to @pid in the description, moved some
#ifdef before comments to correct function to comments bindings, etc.

You can see result of the modified documentation build at
  http://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/~pisa/linux/lkdb-2.6.11.tar.gz

Some more sources are ready to be included into kernel-doc generated
documentation. Sources has been added into kernel-api for now. Some more
section names added and probably some more chaos introduced as result of quick
cleanup work.

b19dcd9341 [PATCH] USB: scripts/mod/file2alias.c: handle numeric ranges for USB bcdDevice
Another attempt at that...

The attached patch fixes the longstanding problem with USB bcdDevice
numeric ranges incorrectly converted into patterns for MODULE_ALIAS
generation. Previously it put both the lower and the upper limits into
the pattern, dlXdhY, making it impossible to fnmatch against except for
a few special cases, like dl*dh* or dlXdhX.

The patch makes it generate multiple MODULE_ALIAS lines covering the
whole range with fnmatch-able patterns. E.g. for a range between 0x0001
and 0x8345 it gives the following patterns:

000[1-9]
00[1-9]*
0[1-9]*
[1-7]*
8[0-2]*
83[0-3]*
834[0-5]

Since bcdDevice is 2 bytes wide = 4 digits in hex representation, the
max no. of patters is 2 * 4 - 1 = 7.

The values are BCD (binary-coded decimals) and not hex, so patterns
using a dash seem to be safe regardless of locale collation order.

The patch changes bcdDevice part of the alias from dlXdhY to dZ, but
this shouldn't have big compatibility issues because fnmatch()-based
modprobing hasn't yet been widely used. Besides, the most common (and
almost the only working) case of dl*dh* becomes d* and thus continues to
work.

The patch is against 2.6.12-rc2, applies to -mm3 with an offset. The
matching patch to fix the MODALIAS environment variable now generated by
the usb hotplug function follows.
