bug: Fix no-return-statement warning with !CONFIG_BUG
BUG() does not return, and arch implementations of BUG() use unreachable()
or other non-returning code. However with !CONFIG_BUG, the default
implementation is often used instead, and that does not do that. x86 always
uses its own implementation, but powerpc with !CONFIG_BUG gives a build
error:
kernel/time/timekeeping.c: In function ‘timekeeping_debug_get_ns’:
kernel/time/timekeeping.c:286:1: error: no return statement in function
returning non-void [-Werror=return-type]
Add unreachable() to default !CONFIG_BUG BUG() implementation.

jump_label,module: Don't alloc static_key_mod for __ro_after_init keys
When a static_key is marked ro_after_init, its state will never change (after init), therefore jump_label_update() will never need to iterate the entries, and thus module load won't actually need to track this -- avoiding the static_key::next write. Therefore, mark these keys such that jump_label_add_module() might recognise them and avoid the modification. Use the special state: 'static_key_linked(key) && !static_key_mod(key)' to denote such keys. jump_label_add_module() does not exist under CONFIG_JUMP_LABEL=n, so the newly-introduced jump_label_init_ro() can be defined as a nop for that configuration. x86/hyperv: Use Hyper-V entropy to seed guest random number generator
A Hyper-V host provides its guest VMs with entropy in a custom ACPI table named "OEM0". The entropy bits are updated each time Hyper-V boots the VM, and are suitable for seeding the Linux guest random number generator (rng). See a brief description of OEM0 in [1]. Generation 2 VMs on Hyper-V use UEFI to boot. Existing EFI code in Linux seeds the rng with entropy bits from the EFI_RNG_PROTOCOL. Via this path, the rng is seeded very early during boot with good entropy. The ACPI OEM0 table provided in such VMs is an additional source of entropy. Generation 1 VMs on Hyper-V boot from BIOS. For these VMs, Linux doesn't currently get any entropy from the Hyper-V host. While this is not fundamentally broken because Linux can generate its own entropy, using the Hyper-V host provided entropy would get the rng off to a better start and would do so earlier in the boot process. Improve the rng seeding for Generation 1 VMs by having Hyper-V specific code in Linux take advantage of the OEM0 table to seed the rng. For Generation 2 VMs, use the OEM0 table to provide additional entropy beyond the EFI_RNG_PROTOCOL. Because the OEM0 table is custom to Hyper-V, parse it directly in the Hyper-V code in the Linux kernel and use add_bootloader_randomness() to add it to the rng. Once the entropy bits are read from OEM0, zero them out in the table so they don't appear in /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/OEM0 in the running VM. The zero'ing is done out of an abundance of caution to avoid potential security risks to the rng. Also set the OEM0 data length to zero so a kexec or other subsequent use of the table won't try to use the zero'ed bits. hyperv-tlfs: Rename some HV_REGISTER_* defines for consistency
Rename HV_REGISTER_GUEST_OSID to HV_REGISTER_GUEST_OS_ID. This matches the existing HV_X64_MSR_GUEST_OS_ID. Rename HV_REGISTER_CRASH_* to HV_REGISTER_GUEST_CRASH_*. Including GUEST_ is consistent with other #defines such as HV_FEATURE_GUEST_CRASH_MSR_AVAILABLE. The new names also match the TLFS document more accurately, i.e. HvRegisterGuestCrash*. hyperv-tlfs: Change prefix of generic HV_REGISTER_* MSRs to HV_MSR_*
The HV_REGISTER_ are used as arguments to hv_set/get_register(), which delegate to arch-specific mechanisms for getting/setting synthetic Hyper-V MSRs. On arm64, HV_REGISTER_ defines are synthetic VP registers accessed via the get/set vp registers hypercalls. The naming matches the TLFS document, although these register names are not specific to arm64. However, on x86 the prefix HV_REGISTER_ indicates Hyper-V MSRs accessed via rdmsrl()/wrmsrl(). This is not consistent with the TLFS doc, where HV_REGISTER_ is *only* used for used for VP register names used by the get/set register hypercalls. To fix this inconsistency and prevent future confusion, change the arch-generic aliases used by callers of hv_set/get_register() to have the prefix HV_MSR_ instead of HV_REGISTER_. Use the prefix HV_X64_MSR_ for the x86-only Hyper-V MSRs. On x86, the generic HV_MSR_'s point to the corresponding HV_X64_MSR_. Move the arm64 HV_REGISTER_* defines to the asm-generic hyperv-tlfs.h, since these are not specific to arm64. On arm64, the generic HV_MSR_'s point to the corresponding HV_REGISTER_. While at it, rename hv_get/set_registers() and related functions to hv_get/set_msr(), hv_get/set_nested_msr(), etc. These are only used for Hyper-V MSRs and this naming makes that clear. treewide: update LLVM Bugzilla links
LLVM moved their issue tracker from their own Bugzilla instance to GitHub issues. While all of the links are still valid, they may not necessarily show the most up to date information around the issues, as all updates will occur on GitHub, not Bugzilla. Another complication is that the Bugzilla issue number is not always the same as the GitHub issue number. Thankfully, LLVM maintains this mapping through two shortlinks: https://llvm.org/bz<num> -> https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num> https://llvm.org/pr<num> -> https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/<mapped_num> Switch all "https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num>" links to the "https://llvm.org/pr<num>" shortlink so that the links show the most up to date information. Each migrated issue links back to the Bugzilla entry, so there should be no loss of fidelity of information here. mm/mmu_gather: add __tlb_remove_folio_pages()
Add __tlb_remove_folio_pages(), which will remove multiple consecutive pages that belong to the same large folio, instead of only a single page. We'll be using this function when optimizing unmapping/zapping of large folios that are mapped by PTEs. We're using the remaining spare bit in an encoded_page to indicate that the next enoced page in an array contains actually shifted "nr_pages". Teach swap/freeing code about putting multiple folio references, and delayed rmap handling to remove page ranges of a folio. This extension allows for still gathering almost as many small folios as we used to (-1, because we have to prepare for a possibly bigger next entry), but still allows for gathering consecutive pages that belong to the same large folio. Note that we don't pass the folio pointer, because it is not required for now. Further, we don't support page_size != PAGE_SIZE, it won't be required for simple PTE batching. We have to provide a separate s390 implementation, but it's fairly straight forward. Another, more invasive and likely more expensive, approach would be to use folio+range or a PFN range instead of page+nr_pages. But, we should do that consistently for the whole mmu_gather. For now, let's keep it simple and add "nr_pages" only. Note that it is now possible to gather significantly more pages: In the past, we were able to gather ~10000 pages, now we can also gather ~5000 folio fragments that span multiple pages. A folio fragment on x86-64 can span up to 512 pages (2 MiB THP) and on arm64 with 64k in theory 8192 pages (512 MiB THP). Gathering more memory is not considered something we should worry about, especially because these are already corner cases. While we can gather more total memory, we won't free more folio fragments. As long as page freeing time primarily only depends on the number of involved folios, there is no effective change for !preempt configurations. However, we'll adjust tlb_batch_pages_flush() separately to handle corner cases where page freeing time grows proportionally with the actual memory size. mm/mmu_gather: pass "delay_rmap" instead of encoded page to __tlb_remove_page_size()
We have two bits available in the encoded page pointer to store additional information. Currently, we use one bit to request delay of the rmap removal until after a TLB flush. We want to make use of the remaining bit internally for batching of multiple pages of the same folio, specifying that the next encoded page pointer in an array is actually "nr_pages". So pass page + delay_rmap flag instead of an encoded page, to handle the encoding internally. kernel.h: removed REPEAT_BYTE from kernel.h
This patch creates wordpart.h and includes it in asm/word-at-a-time.h for all architectures. WORD_AT_A_TIME_CONSTANTS depends on kernel.h because of REPEAT_BYTE. Moving this to another header and including it where necessary allows us to not include the bloated kernel.h. asm-generic: remove extra type checking in acquire/release for non-SMP case
If CONFIG_SMP is not enabled, the smp_load_acquire/smp_store_release is implemented as READ_ONCE/READ_ONCE and barrier() and type checking. asm-generic: Improve csum_fold
This csum_fold implementation introduced into arch/arc by Vineet Gupta is better than the default implementation on at least arc, x86, and riscv. Using GCC trunk and compiling non-inlined version, this implementation has 41.6667%, 25% fewer instructions on riscv64, x86-64 respectively with -O3 optimization. Networking changes for 6.8.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev, netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes. This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up to 40%. - Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and possible leaks. - Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active connections to the same destination. - Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket structs. - Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF. - Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to 128KB and namespecifying it. - Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving RX performances with some common configurations. - Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time. - Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to request the deletion of matching entries. - Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the datapath first. - Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting multicast-like behavior at the TC layer. - Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and classifiers (RSVP and tcindex). - More data-race annotations. - Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets. - Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions. - Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form a sub-network using a specific PAN ID. - Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support. - Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type. BPF --- - Tons of verifier improvements: - BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large test suite - log improvements - complete precision tracking support for register spills - track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. It improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from single digit to 50-60% for some programs - support for user's global BPF subprogram arguments with few commonly requested annotations for a better developer experience - support tracking of BPF_JNE which helps cases when the compiler transforms (unsigned) "a > 0" into "if a == 0 goto xxx" and the like - several fixes - Add initial TX metadata implementation for AF_XDP with support in mlx5 and stmmac drivers. Two types of offloads are supported right now, that is, TX timestamp and TX checksum offload. - Fix kCFI bugs in BPF all forms of indirect calls from BPF into kernel and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows BPF to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y. - Change BPF verifier logic to validate global subprograms lazily instead of unconditionally before the main program, so they can be guarded using BPF CO-RE techniques. - Support uid/gid options when mounting bpffs. - Add a new kfunc which acquires the associated cgroup of a task within a specific cgroup v1 hierarchy where the latter is identified by its id. - Extend verifier to allow bpf_refcount_acquire() of a map value field obtained via direct load which is a use-case needed in sched_ext. - Add BPF link_info support for uprobe multi link along with bpftool integration for the latter. - Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints. - Remove deprecated bpfilter kernel leftovers given the project is developed in user-space (https://github.com/facebook/bpfilter). Misc ---- - Support for parellel TC self-tests execution. - Increase MPTCP self-tests coverage. - Updated the bridge documentation, including several so-far undocumented features. - Convert all the net self-tests to run in unique netns, to avoid random failures due to conflict and allow concurrent runs. - Add TCP-AO self-tests. - Add kunit tests for both cfg80211 and mac80211. - Autogenerate Netlink families documentation from YAML spec. - Add yml-gen support for fixed headers and recursive nests, the tool can now generate user-space code for all genetlink families for which we have specs. - A bunch of additional module descriptions fixes. - Catch incorrect freeing of pages belonging to a page pool. Driver API ---------- - Rust abstractions for network PHY drivers; do not cover yet the full C API, but already allow implementing functional PHY drivers in rust. - Introduce queue and NAPI support in the netdev Netlink interface, allowing complete access to the device <> NAPIs <> queues relationship. - Introduce notifications filtering for devlink to allow control application scale to thousands of instances. - Improve PHY validation, requesting rate matching information for each ethtool link mode supported by both the PHY and host. - Add support for ethtool symmetric-xor RSS hash. - ACPI based Wifi band RFI (WBRF) mitigation feature for the AMD platform. - Expose pin fractional frequency offset value over new DPLL generic netlink attribute. - Convert older drivers to platform remove callback returning void. - Add support for PHY package MMD read/write. Core & protocols: - Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev, netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up to 40% - Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and possible leaks - Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active connections to the same destination - Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket structs - Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF - Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to 128KB and namespecifying it - Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving RX performances with some common configurations - Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time - Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to request the deletion of matching entries - Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the datapath first - Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting multicast-like behavior at the TC layer - Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and classifiers (RSVP and tcindex) - More data-race annotations - Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets - Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions - Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form a sub-network using a specific PAN ID - Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support - Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type BPF: - Tons of verifier improvements: - BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large test suite - log improvements - complete precision tracking support for register spills - track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. asm-generic cleanups for 6.8
A series from Baoquan He cleans up the asm-generic/io.h to remove the ioremap_uc() definition from everything except x86, which still needs it for pre-PAT systems. This series notably contains a patch from Jiaxun Yang that converts MIPS to use asm-generic/io.h like every other architecture does, enabling future cleanups. Some of my own patches fix -Wmissing-prototype warnings in architecture specific code across several architectures. This is now needed as the warning is enabled by default. There are still some remaining warnings in minor platforms, but the series should catch most of the widely used ones make them more consistent with one another. David McKay fixes a bug in __generic_cmpxchg_local() when this is used on 64-bit architectures. This could currently only affect parisc64 and sparc64. Additional cleanups address from Linus Walleij, Uwe Kleine-König, Thomas Huth, and Kefeng Wang help reduce unnecessary inconsistencies between architectures. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEiK/NIGsWEZVxh/FrYKtH/8kJUicFAmWeak8ACgkQYKtH/8kJ UidSiQ/+LL1WTO9d3Zx5HI0GGGjaIYpYs6jUNSf9Y5GPQiOrvjfEWj7CU11/4vxl GlQRpRyncYm8Eiz0Qu+aNxZFiiMah8Uful75yfbX8P1L4EPTbAYNDjkyNJrTjIAK jPK4sl8awIrapOeFUz++PsEj22R/4Is4f0mo+CqoCkL5RKlHe5oFdXzcwjmds4yK CvU6Ldn+M7FZ3EItMdjXaB3D3HS9uictFiO5JByZY8p+IcqgNRI/iHNnZIMsltJ+ XjDi0DG+x4jCj6teElSchw7AofE4OcNSP3xbR1PLKv6+xBLGYaAGZhNuPTz88eV/ Gj0loDQrrR5McGUfDBRHK9zN2Jd0O/FKnfh9kLOt1FLFyGPvC78Q/2HkpVCjbBr2 Pr1aqhLDHA+tGNSsThsV8RUa8/tiEnxAki43tfBFS3SEKhtQsTm2g1z4miwbE3p0 BJIrSgTqrP/SBq7a9z/thPrkzdZcNuA9FUETTbaMeUlJS51n1V9E5A1t7sOG7jaI vV/gbuR6FjvD49mTyQiOSCt3V4ygRqgN1Q+C4QM8WLqq2keUq0AhGodquv8F78in J3x2j2r27lHY7jKf8B0dua/JXAsF20u8qD6yDQ9ymkjt/MWhGXBgK0jpT7RTIuMS e2jmTywUVD4UohAcx3inkOojUhIJ5KDB0I4Pzv4zWcHNbyFNKcY= =4VQl -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.8' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic cleanups from Arnd Bergmann: "A series from Baoquan He cleans up the asm-generic/io.h to remove the ioremap_uc() definition from everything except x86, which still needs it for pre-PAT systems. asm-generic: make sparse happy with odd-sized put_unaligned_*()
__put_unaligned_be24() and friends use implicit casts to convert larger-sized data to bytes, which trips sparse truncation warnings when the argument is a constant: CC [M] drivers/input/touchscreen/hynitron_cstxxx.o CHECK drivers/input/touchscreen/hynitron_cstxxx.c drivers/input/touchscreen/hynitron_cstxxx.c: note: in included file (through arch/x86/include/generated/asm/unaligned.h): include/asm-generic/unaligned.h:119:16: warning: cast truncates bits from constant value (aa01a0 becomes a0) include/asm-generic/unaligned.h:120:20: warning: cast truncates bits from constant value (aa01 becomes 1) include/asm-generic/unaligned.h:119:16: warning: cast truncates bits from constant value (ab00d0 becomes d0) include/asm-generic/unaligned.h:120:20: warning: cast truncates bits from constant value (ab00 becomes 0) To avoid this let's mask off upper bits explicitly, the resulting code should be exactly the same, but it will keep sparse happy. kunit: move KUNIT_TABLE out of INIT_DATA
Alter the linker section of KUNIT_TABLE to move it out of INIT_DATA and into DATA_DATA. Data for KUnit tests does not need to be in the init section. In order to run tests again after boot the KUnit data cannot be labeled as init data as the kernel could write over it. Add a KUNIT_INIT_TABLE in the next patch for KUnit tests that test init data/functions. mm: Introduce flush_cache_vmap_early()
The pcpu setup when using the page allocator sets up a new vmalloc mapping very early in the boot process, so early that it cannot use the flush_cache_vmap() function which may depend on structures not yet initialized (for example in riscv, we currently send an IPI to flush other cpus TLB). But on some architectures, we must call flush_cache_vmap(): for example, in riscv, some uarchs can cache invalid TLB entries so we need to flush the new established mapping to avoid taking an exception. So fix this by introducing a new function flush_cache_vmap_early() which is called right after setting the new page table entry and before accessing this new mapping. This new function implements a local flush tlb on riscv and is no-op for other architectures (same as today). arm64: irq: set the correct node for VMAP stack
In current code, init_irq_stacks() will call cpu_to_node(). The cpu_to_node() depends on percpu "numa_node" which is initialized in: arch_call_rest_init() --> rest_init() -- kernel_init() --> kernel_init_freeable() --> smp_prepare_cpus() But init_irq_stacks() is called in init_IRQ() which is before arch_call_rest_init(). So in init_irq_stacks(), the cpu_to_node() does not work, it always return 0. In NUMA, it makes the node 1 cpu accesses the IRQ stack which is in the node 0. This patch fixes it by: 1.) export the early_cpu_to_node(), and use it in the init_irq_stacks(). 2.) change init_irq_stacks() to __init function. asm-generic: qspinlock: fix queued_spin_value_unlocked() implementation
We really don't want to do atomic_read() or anything like that, since we
already have the value, not the lock. The whole point of this is that
we've loaded the lock from memory, and we want to check whether the
value we loaded was a locked one or not.
The main use of this is the lockref code, which loads both the lock and
the reference count in one atomic operation, and then works on that
combined value. With the atomic_read(), the compiler would pointlessly
spill the value to the stack, in order to then be able to read it back
"atomically".
This is the qspinlock version of commit

asm-generic updates for v6.7
The ia64 architecture gets its well-earned retirement as planned, now that there is one last (mostly) working release that will be maintained as an LTS kernel. The architecture specific system call tables are updated for the added map_shadow_stack() syscall and to remove references to the long-gone sys_lookup_dcookie() syscall. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEiK/NIGsWEZVxh/FrYKtH/8kJUicFAmVC40IACgkQYKtH/8kJ Uidhmw/9EX+aWSXGoObJ3fngaNSMw+PmrEuP8qEKBHxfKHcCdX3hc451Oh4GlhaQ tru91pPwgNvN2/rfoKusxT+V4PemGIzfNni/04rp+P0kvmdw5otQ2yNhsQNsfVmq XGWvkxF4P2GO6bkjjfR/1dDq7GtlyXtwwPDKeLbYb6TnJOZjtx+EAN27kkfSn1Ms R4Sa3zJ+DfHUmHL5S9g+7UD/CZ5GfKNmIskI4Mz5GsfoUz/0iiU+Bge/9sdcdSJQ kmbLy5YnVzfooLZ3TQmBFsO3iAMWb0s/mDdtyhqhTVmTUshLolkPYyKnPFvdupyv shXcpEST2XJNeaDRnL2K4zSCdxdbnCZHDpjfl9wfioBg7I8NfhXKpf1jYZHH1de4 LXq8ndEFEOVQw/zSpYWfQq1sux8Jiqr+UK/ukbVeFWiGGIUs91gEWtPAf8T0AZo9 ujkJvaWGl98O1g5wmBu0/dAR6QcFJMDfVwbmlIFpU8O+MEaz6X8mM+O5/T0IyTcD eMbAUjj4uYcU7ihKzHEv/0SS9Of38kzff67CLN5k8wOP/9NlaGZ78o1bVle9b52A BdhrsAefFiWHp1jT6Y9Rg4HOO/TguQ9e6EWSKOYFulsiLH9LEFaB9RwZLeLytV0W vlAgY9rUW77g1OJcb7DoNv33nRFuxsKqsnz3DEIXtgozo9CzbYI= =H1vH -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull ia64 removal and asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: - The ia64 architecture gets its well-earned retirement as planned, now that there is one last (mostly) working release that will be maintained as an LTS kernel. - The architecture specific system call tables are updated for the added map_shadow_stack() syscall and to remove references to the long-gone sys_lookup_dcookie() syscall. * tag 'asm-generic-6.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: hexagon: Remove unusable symbols from the ptrace.h uapi asm-generic: Fix spelling of architecture arch: Reserve map_shadow_stack() syscall number for all architectures syscalls: Cleanup references to sys_lookup_dcookie() Documentation: Drop or replace remaining mentions of IA64 lib/raid6: Drop IA64 support Documentation: Drop IA64 from feature descriptions kernel: Drop IA64 support from sig_fault handlers arch: Remove Itanium (IA-64) architecture |
