Another moderately busy cycle for documentation, including:
- The minimum Sphinx requirement has been raised to 2.4.4, following a warning that was added in 6.2. - Some reworking of the Documentation/process front page to, hopefully, make it more useful. - Various kernel-doc tweaks to, for example, make it deal properly with __counted_by annotations. - We have also restored a warning for documentation of nonexistent structure members that disappeared a while back. That had the delightful consequence of adding some 600 warnings to the docs build. A sustained effort by Randy, Vegard, and myself has addressed almost all of those, bringing the documentation back into sync with the code. The fixes are going through the appropriate maintainer trees. - Various improvements to the HTML rendered docs, including automatic links to Git revisions and a nice new pulldown to make translations easy to access. - Speaking of translations, more of those for Spanish and Chinese. ...plus the usual stream of documentation updates and typo fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQFDBAABCAAtFiEEIw+MvkEiF49krdp9F0NaE2wMflgFAmWcRKMPHGNvcmJldEBs d24ubmV0AAoJEBdDWhNsDH5YTKIH/AxBt/3iWt40dPf18arZHLU6tdUbmg01ttef CNKWkniCmABGKc//KYDXvjZMRDt0YlrS0KgUzrb8nIQTBlZG40D+88EwjXE0HeGP xt1Fk7OPOiJEqBZ3HEe0PDVfOiA+4yR6CmDKklCJuKg77X9atklneBwPUw/cOASk CWj+BdbwPBiSNQv48Lp87rGusKwnH/g0MN2uS0z9MPr1DYjM1K8+ngZjGW24lZHt qs5yhP43mlZGBF/lwNJXQp/xhnKAqJ9XwylBX9Wmaoxaz9yyzNVsADGvROMudgzi 9YB+Jdy7Z0JSrVoLIRhUuDOv7aW8vk+8qLmGJt2aTIsqehbQ6pk= =fCtT -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'docs-6.8' of git://git.lwn.net/linux Pull documentation update from Jonathan Corbet: "Another moderately busy cycle for documentation, including: - The minimum Sphinx requirement has been raised to 2.4.4, following a warning that was added in 6.2 - Some reworking of the Documentation/process front page to, hopefully, make it more useful - Various kernel-doc tweaks to, for example, make it deal properly with __counted_by annotations - We have also restored a warning for documentation of nonexistent structure members that disappeared a while back. Networking changes for 6.8.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev, netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes. This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up to 40%. - Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and possible leaks. - Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active connections to the same destination. - Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket structs. - Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF. - Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to 128KB and namespecifying it. - Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving RX performances with some common configurations. - Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time. - Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to request the deletion of matching entries. - Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the datapath first. - Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting multicast-like behavior at the TC layer. - Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and classifiers (RSVP and tcindex). - More data-race annotations. - Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets. - Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions. - Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form a sub-network using a specific PAN ID. - Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support. - Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type. BPF --- - Tons of verifier improvements: - BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large test suite - log improvements - complete precision tracking support for register spills - track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. It improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from single digit to 50-60% for some programs - support for user's global BPF subprogram arguments with few commonly requested annotations for a better developer experience - support tracking of BPF_JNE which helps cases when the compiler transforms (unsigned) "a > 0" into "if a == 0 goto xxx" and the like - several fixes - Add initial TX metadata implementation for AF_XDP with support in mlx5 and stmmac drivers. Two types of offloads are supported right now, that is, TX timestamp and TX checksum offload. - Fix kCFI bugs in BPF all forms of indirect calls from BPF into kernel and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows BPF to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y. - Change BPF verifier logic to validate global subprograms lazily instead of unconditionally before the main program, so they can be guarded using BPF CO-RE techniques. - Support uid/gid options when mounting bpffs. - Add a new kfunc which acquires the associated cgroup of a task within a specific cgroup v1 hierarchy where the latter is identified by its id. - Extend verifier to allow bpf_refcount_acquire() of a map value field obtained via direct load which is a use-case needed in sched_ext. - Add BPF link_info support for uprobe multi link along with bpftool integration for the latter. - Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints. - Remove deprecated bpfilter kernel leftovers given the project is developed in user-space (https://github.com/facebook/bpfilter). Misc ---- - Support for parellel TC self-tests execution. - Increase MPTCP self-tests coverage. - Updated the bridge documentation, including several so-far undocumented features. - Convert all the net self-tests to run in unique netns, to avoid random failures due to conflict and allow concurrent runs. - Add TCP-AO self-tests. - Add kunit tests for both cfg80211 and mac80211. - Autogenerate Netlink families documentation from YAML spec. - Add yml-gen support for fixed headers and recursive nests, the tool can now generate user-space code for all genetlink families for which we have specs. - A bunch of additional module descriptions fixes. - Catch incorrect freeing of pages belonging to a page pool. Driver API ---------- - Rust abstractions for network PHY drivers; do not cover yet the full C API, but already allow implementing functional PHY drivers in rust. - Introduce queue and NAPI support in the netdev Netlink interface, allowing complete access to the device <> NAPIs <> queues relationship. - Introduce notifications filtering for devlink to allow control application scale to thousands of instances. - Improve PHY validation, requesting rate matching information for each ethtool link mode supported by both the PHY and host. - Add support for ethtool symmetric-xor RSS hash. - ACPI based Wifi band RFI (WBRF) mitigation feature for the AMD platform. - Expose pin fractional frequency offset value over new DPLL generic netlink attribute. - Convert older drivers to platform remove callback returning void. - Add support for PHY package MMD read/write. kunit: Add APIs for managing devices
Tests for drivers often require a struct device to pass to other functions. While it's possible to create these with root_device_register(), or to use something like a platform device, this is both a misuse of those APIs, and can be difficult to clean up after, for example, a failed assertion. Add some KUnit-specific functions for registering and unregistering a struct device: - kunit_device_register() - kunit_device_register_with_driver() - kunit_device_unregister() These helpers allocate a on a 'kunit' bus which will either probe the driver passed in (kunit_device_register_with_driver), or will create a stub driver (kunit_device_register) which is cleaned up on test shutdown. Devices are automatically unregistered on test shutdown, but can be manually unregistered earlier with kunit_device_unregister() in order to, for example, test device release code. kunit: Add a macro to wrap a deferred action function
KUnit's deferred action API accepts a void(*)(void *) function pointer which is called when the test is exited. However, we very frequently want to use existing functions which accept a single pointer, but which may not be of type void*. While this is probably dodgy enough to be on the wrong side of the C standard, it's been often used for similar callbacks, and gcc's -Wcast-function-type seems to ignore cases where the only difference is the type of the argument, assuming it's compatible (i.e., they're both pointers to data). However, clang 16 has introduced -Wcast-function-type-strict, which no longer permits any deviation in function pointer type. This seems to be because it'd break CFI, which validates the type of function calls. This rather ruins our attempts to cast functions to defer them, and leaves us with a few options. The one we've chosen is to implement a macro which will generate a wrapper function which accepts a void*, and casts the argument to the appropriate type. For example, if you were trying to wrap: void foo_close(struct foo *handle); you could use: KUNIT_DEFINE_ACTION_WRAPPER(kunit_action_foo_close, foo_close, struct foo *); This would create a new kunit_action_foo_close() function, of type kunit_action_t, which could be passed into kunit_add_action() and similar functions. In addition to defining this macro, update KUnit and its tests to use it. LoongArch: Add KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer) support
1/8 of kernel addresses reserved for shadow memory. But for LoongArch, There are a lot of holes between different segments and valid address space (256T available) is insufficient to map all these segments to kasan shadow memory with the common formula provided by kasan core, saying (addr >> KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SHIFT) + KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET So LoongArch has a arch-specific mapping formula, different segments are mapped individually, and only limited space lengths of these specific segments are mapped to shadow. At early boot stage the whole shadow region populated with just one physical page (kasan_early_shadow_page). Later, this page is reused as readonly zero shadow for some memory that kasan currently don't track. After mapping the physical memory, pages for shadow memory are allocated and mapped. Functions like memset()/memcpy()/memmove() do a lot of memory accesses. If bad pointer passed to one of these function it is important to be caught. Compiler's instrumentation cannot do this since these functions are written in assembly. KASan replaces memory functions with manually instrumented variants. Original functions declared as weak symbols so strong definitions in mm/kasan/kasan.c could replace them. Original functions have aliases with '__' prefix in names, so we could call non-instrumented variant if needed. kasan: add support for kasan.fault=panic_on_write
KASAN's boot time kernel parameter 'kasan.fault=' currently supports 'report' and 'panic', which results in either only reporting bugs or also panicking on reports. However, some users may wish to have more control over when KASAN reports result in a kernel panic: in particular, KASAN reported invalid _writes_ are of special interest, because they have greater potential to corrupt random kernel memory or be more easily exploited. To panic on invalid writes only, introduce 'kasan.fault=panic_on_write', which allows users to choose to continue running on invalid reads, but panic only on invalid writes. selftests: allow runners to override the timeout
The default timeout for selftests tests is 45 seconds. Although we already have 13 settings for tests of about 96 sefltests which use a timeout greater than this, we want to try to avoid encouraging more tests to forcing a higher test timeout as selftests strives to run all tests quickly. Selftests also uses the timeout as a non-fatal error. Only tests runners which have control over a system would know if to treat a timeout as fatal or not. To help with all this: o Enhance documentation to avoid future increases of insane timeouts o Add the option to allow overriding the default timeout with test runners with a command line option Suggested-by: Shuah Khan <skhan@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: Luis Chamberlain <mcgrof@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Muhammad Usama Anjum <usama.anjum@collabora.com> Tested-by:Muhammad Usama Anjum <usama.anjum@collabora.com> Signed-off-by: Shuah Khan <skhan@linuxfoundation.org> |

Documentation: Add Function Redirection API docs
Added a new page (functionredirection.rst) that describes the Function Redirection (static stubbing) API. This page will be expanded if we add, for example, ftrace-based stubbing. In addition, 1. Updated the api/index.rst page to create an entry for function redirection api 2. Updated the toctree to be hidden, reducing redundancy on the generated page. kunit: Add "hooks" to call into KUnit when it's built as a module
KUnit has several macros and functions intended for use from non-test
code. These hooks, currently the kunit_get_current_test() and
kunit_fail_current_test() macros, didn't work when CONFIG_KUNIT=m.
In order to support this case, the required functions and static data
need to be available unconditionally, even when KUnit itself is not
built-in. The new 'hooks.c' file is therefore always included, and has
both the static key required for kunit_get_current_test(), and a table
of function pointers in struct kunit_hooks_table. This is filled in with
the real implementations by kunit_install_hooks(), which is kept in
hooks-impl.h and called when the kunit module is loaded.
This can be extended for future features which require similar
"hook" behaviour, such as static stubs, by simply adding new entries to
the struct, and the appropriate code to set them.

kasan: allow sampling page_alloc allocations for HW_TAGS
As Hardware Tag-Based KASAN is intended to be used in production, its performance impact is crucial. As page_alloc allocations tend to be big, tagging and checking all such allocations can introduce a significant slowdown. Add two new boot parameters that allow to alleviate that slowdown: - kasan.page_alloc.sample, which makes Hardware Tag-Based KASAN tag only every Nth page_alloc allocation with the order configured by the second added parameter (default: tag every such allocation). - kasan.page_alloc.sample.order, which makes sampling enabled by the first parameter only affect page_alloc allocations with the order equal or greater than the specified value (default: 3, see below). The exact performance improvement caused by using the new parameters depends on their values and the applied workload. The chosen default value for kasan.page_alloc.sample.order is 3, which matches both PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER and SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER. This is done for two reasons: 1. PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER is "the order at which allocations are deemed costly to service", which corresponds to the idea that only large and thus costly allocations are supposed to sampled. 2. One of the workloads targeted by this patch is a benchmark that sends a large amount of data over a local loopback connection. Most multi-page data allocations in the networking subsystem have the order of SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER (or PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER). When running a local loopback test on a testing MTE-enabled device in sync mode, enabling Hardware Tag-Based KASAN introduces a ~50% slowdown. Applying this patch and setting kasan.page_alloc.sampling to a value higher than 1 allows to lower the slowdown. The performance improvement saturates around the sampling interval value of 10 with the default sampling page order of 3. This lowers the slowdown to ~20%. The slowdown in real scenarios involving the network will likely be better. Enabling page_alloc sampling has a downside: KASAN misses bad accesses to a page_alloc allocation that has not been tagged. This lowers the value of KASAN as a security mitigation. However, based on measuring the number of page_alloc allocations of different orders during boot in a test build, sampling with the default kasan.page_alloc.sample.order value affects only ~7% of allocations. The rest ~93% of allocations are still checked deterministically. Documentation: dev-tools: Clarify requirements for result description
Currently the KTAP specification says that a test result line is <result> <number> [<description>][ # [<directive>] [<diagnostic data>]] and the description of a test can be "any sequence of words (can't include #)" which specifies that there may be more than one word but does not specify anything other than those words which might be used to separate the words which probably isn't what we want. Given that practically we have tests using a range of separators for words including combinations of spaces and combinations of other symbols like underscores or punctuation let's just clarify that the description can contain any character other than # (marking the start of the directive/diagnostic) or newline (marking the end of this test result). The "How Do I Use This" section of index.rst and "Next Steps" section of start.rst were just copies of the table of contents, and therefore weren't really useful either when looking a sphinx generated output (which already had the TOC visible) or when reading the source (where it's just a list of files that ls could give you). Instead, provide a small number of concrete next steps, and a bit more description about what the pages contain. This also removes the broken reference to 'tips.rst', which was previously removed. kunit: Use the static key when retrieving the current test
In order to detect if a KUnit test is running, and to access its context, the 'kunit_test' member of the current task_struct is used. Usually, this is accessed directly or via the kunit_fail_current_task() function. In order to speed up the case where no test is running, add a wrapper, kunit_get_current_test(), which uses the static key to fail early. Equally, Speed up kunit_fail_current_test() by using the static key. This should make it convenient for code to call this unconditionally in fakes or error paths, without worrying that this will slow the code down significantly. If CONFIG_KUNIT=n (or m), this compiles away to nothing. If CONFIG_KUNIT=y, it will compile down to a NOP (on most architectures) if no KUnit test is currently running. Note that kunit_get_current_test() does not work if KUnit is built as a module. This mirrors the existing restriction on kunit_fail_current_test(). Note that the definition of kunit_fail_current_test() still wraps an empty, inline function if KUnit is not built-in. This is to ensure that the printf format string __attribute__ will still work. Also update the documentation to suggest users use the new kunit_get_current_test() function, update the example, and to describe the behaviour when KUnit is disabled better.
