mm: rework accept memory helpers
Make accept_memory() and range_contains_unaccepted_memory() take 'start' and 'size' arguments instead of 'start' and 'end'. Remove accept_page(), replacing it with direct calls to accept_memory(). kbuild: Abort make on install failures
Setting '-e' flag tells shells to exit with error exit code immediately after any of commands fails, and causes make(1) to regard recipes as failed. Before this, make will still continue to succeed even after the installation failed, for example, for insufficient permission or directory does not exist. x86/sev: Move SEV compilation units
A long time ago it was agreed upon that the coco stuff needs to go where it belongs: https://lore.kernel.org/all/Yg5nh1RknPRwIrb8@zn.tnic and not keep it in arch/x86/kernel. TDX did that and SEV can't find time to do so. So lemme do it. If people have trouble converting their ongoing featuritis patches, ask me for a sed script. No functional changes. x86/efi: Drop support for fake EFI memory maps
Between kexec and confidential VM support, handling the EFI memory maps correctly on x86 is already proving to be rather difficult (as opposed to other EFI architectures which manage to never modify the EFI memory map to begin with) EFI fake memory map support is essentially a development hack (for testing new support for the 'special purpose' and 'more reliable' EFI memory attributes) that leaked into production code. The regions marked in this manner are not actually recognized as such by the firmware itself or the EFI stub (and never have), and marking memory as 'more reliable' seems rather futile if the underlying memory is just ordinary RAM. Marking memory as 'special purpose' in this way is also dubious, but may be in use in production code nonetheless. However, the same should be achievable by using the memmap= command line option with the ! operator. EFI fake memmap support is not enabled by any of the major distros (Debian, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu) and does not exist on other architectures, so let's drop support for it. x86/sev: Perform PVALIDATE using the SVSM when not at VMPL0
The PVALIDATE instruction can only be performed at VMPL0. If an SVSM is present, it will be running at VMPL0 while the guest itself is then running at VMPL1 or a lower privilege level. In that case, use the SVSM_CORE_PVALIDATE call to perform memory validation instead of issuing the PVALIDATE instruction directly. The validation of a single 4K page is now explicitly identified as such in the function name, pvalidate_4k_page(). The pvalidate_pages() function is used for validating 1 or more pages at either 4K or 2M in size. Each function, however, determines whether it can issue the PVALIDATE directly or whether the SVSM needs to be invoked. x86/boot: Remove unused function __fortify_panic()
That function is only used when the kernel is compiled with FORTIFY_SOURCE and when the kernel proper string.h header is used. The decompressor code doesn't use the kernel proper header but has local copy which doesn't contain any fortified implementations of the various string functions. As such __fortify_panic() can never be called from the decompressor so remove it. During early boot phases, check for the presence of an SVSM when running as an SEV-SNP guest. An SVSM is present if not running at VMPL0 and the 64-bit value at offset 0x148 into the secrets page is non-zero. If an SVSM is present, save the SVSM Calling Area address (CAA), located at offset 0x150 into the secrets page, and set the VMPL level of the guest, which should be non-zero, to indicate the presence of an SVSM. kbuild: use $(src) instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for source directory
Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined in scripts/Makefile.build: src := $(obj) When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically passed to the compiler. This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter. To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of $(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree. x86/sev: Make the VMPL0 checking more straight forward
Currently, the enforce_vmpl0() function uses a set argument when modifying the VMPL1 permissions used to test for VMPL0. If the guest is not running at VMPL0, the guest self-terminates. The function is just a wrapper for a fixed RMPADJUST function. Eliminate the function and perform the RMPADJUST directly. No functional change. x86/sev: Rename snp_init() in boot/compressed/sev.c
The snp_init() function in boot/compressed/sev.c is local to that file, is not called from outside of the file and is independent of the snp_init() function in kernel/sev.c. Change the name to better differentiate when each function is used. Move the renamed snp_init() and related functions up in the file to avoid having to add a forward declaration and make the function static. No functional change. x86/boot/64: Clear most of CR4 in startup_64(), except PAE, MCE and LA57
The early 64-bit boot code must be entered with a 1:1 mapping of the bootable image, but it cannot operate without a 1:1 mapping of all the assets in memory that it accesses, and therefore, it creates such mappings for all known assets upfront, and additional ones on demand when a page fault happens on a memory address. These mappings are created with the global bit G set, as the flags used to create page table descriptors are based on __PAGE_KERNEL_LARGE_EXEC defined by the core kernel, even though the context where these mappings are used is very different. This means that the TLB maintenance carried out by the decompressor is not sufficient if it is entered with CR4.PGE enabled, which has been observed to happen with the stage0 bootloader of project Oak. While this is a dubious practice if no global mappings are being used to begin with, the decompressor is clearly at fault here for creating global mappings and not performing the appropriate TLB maintenance. x86/efistub: Add missing boot_params for mixed mode compat entry
The pure EFI stub entry point does not take a struct boot_params from the boot loader, but creates it from scratch, and populates only the fields that still have meaning in this context (command line, initrd base and size, etc) The original mixed mode implementation used the EFI handover protocol instead, where the boot loader (i.e., GRUB) populates a boot_params struct and passes it to a special Linux specific EFI entry point that takes the boot_params pointer as its third argument. When the new mixed mode implementation was introduced, using a special 32-bit PE entrypoint in the 64-bit kernel, it adopted the pure approach, and relied on the EFI stub to create the struct boot_params. This is preferred because it makes the bootloader side much easier to implement, as it does not need any x86-specific knowledge on how struct boot_params and struct setup_header are put together. x86/efistub: Call mixed mode boot services on the firmware's stack
Normally, the EFI stub calls into the EFI boot services using the stack that was live when the stub was entered. According to the UEFI spec, this stack needs to be at least 128k in size - this might seem large but all asynchronous processing and event handling in EFI runs from the same stack and so quite a lot of space may be used in practice. In mixed mode, the situation is a bit different: the bootloader calls the 32-bit EFI stub entry point, which calls the decompressor's 32-bit entry point, where the boot stack is set up, using a fixed allocation of 16k. This stack is still in use when the EFI stub is started in 64-bit mode, and so all calls back into the EFI firmware will be using the decompressor's limited boot stack. Due to the placement of the boot stack right after the boot heap, any stack overruns have gone unnoticed. However, commit 5c4feadb0011983b ("x86/decompressor: Move global symbol references to C code") moved the definition of the boot heap into C code, and now the boot stack is placed right at the base of BSS, where any overruns will corrupt the end of the .data section. While it would be possible to work around this by increasing the size of the boot stack, doing so would affect all x86 systems, and mixed mode systems are a tiny (and shrinking) fraction of the x86 installed base. So instead, record the firmware stack pointer value when entering from the 32-bit firmware, and switch to this stack every time a EFI boot service call is made. The "P" asm operand modifier is a x86 target-specific modifier. When used with a constant, the "P" modifier emits "cst" instead of "$cst". This property is currently used to emit the bare constant without all syntax-specific prefixes. The generic "c" resp. "n" operand modifier should be used instead. No functional changes intended. x86/efistub: Remap kernel text read-only before dropping NX attribute
Currently, the EFI stub invokes the EFI memory attributes protocol to strip any NX restrictions from the entire loaded kernel, resulting in all code and data being mapped read-write-execute. The point of the EFI memory attributes protocol is to remove the need for all memory allocations to be mapped with both write and execute permissions by default, and make it the OS loader's responsibility to transition data mappings to code mappings where appropriate. Even though the UEFI specification does not appear to leave room for denying memory attribute changes based on security policy, let's be cautious and avoid relying on the ability to create read-write-execute mappings. This is trivially achievable, given that the amount of kernel code executing via the firmware's 1:1 mapping is rather small and limited to the .head.text region. x86/boot: Move mem_encrypt= parsing to the decompressor
The early SME/SEV code parses the command line very early, in order to decide whether or not memory encryption should be enabled, which needs to occur even before the initial page tables are created. This is problematic for a number of reasons: - this early code runs from the 1:1 mapping provided by the decompressor or firmware, which uses a different translation than the one assumed by the linker, and so the code needs to be built in a special way; - parsing external input while the entire kernel image is still mapped writable is a bad idea in general, and really does not belong in security minded code; - the current code ignores the built-in command line entirely (although this appears to be the case for the entire decompressor) Given that the decompressor/EFI stub is an intrinsic part of the x86 bootable kernel image, move the command line parsing there and out of the core kernel. This removes the need to build lib/cmdline.o in a special way, or to use RIP-relative LEA instructions in inline asm blocks. This involves a new xloadflag in the setup header to indicate that mem_encrypt=on appeared on the kernel command line. fortify: Improve buffer overflow reporting
Improve the reporting of buffer overflows under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE to help accelerate debugging efforts. The calculations are all just sitting in registers anyway, so pass them along to the function to be reported. fortify: Split reporting and avoid passing string pointer
In preparation for KUnit testing and further improvements in fortify failure reporting, split out the report and encode the function and access failure (read or write overflow) into a single u8 argument. This mainly ends up saving a tiny bit of space in the data segment.
