Indicating error message when failed case is very useful for debuging.
In many case, its style is like below.
int function(...)
{
...
return ret;
}
int caller(...)
{
...
ret = function(...);
if (ret < 0)
dev_err(...)
...
}
This is not so bad, but in this style *each caller* needs to indicate
duplicate same error message, and some caller is forgetting to do it.
And caller can't indicate detail function() error information.
If function() indicates error message, we can get same and
detail information without forgot.
int function(...)
{
...
if (ret < 0)
dev_err(...)
return ret;
}
int caller(...)
{
...

...
}

If this for_each_rtd_cpu_dais() loop (= C) calls
dpcm_init_runtime_hw() (= A) multiple times, this means it is Multi-CPU.
If we focus to format operation at (D), using mask (= D1) is understandable
because it restricts unsupported format.
But, enabling format when zero format case (= D2) is very strange,
because it might enables unsupported format.
This runtime->hw.formats is initialized by ULLONG_MAX at soc_pcm_hw_init(),
thus becoming zero format means it can't use such format.
And doing this strange format operation is only here.
This patch removes strange format operation (= D2), and use standard
soc_pcm_hw_update_format() for it.

When runtime is initialized with dpcm_init_runtime_hw(), some of the
min/max calculations assume that defaults are set. For example
calculation of channel min/max values may be done using zero-initialized
data and soc_pcm_hw_update_chan() will always return max-channels of 0
in this case. This will result in failure to open the PCM at all.
Fix the issue by calling soc_pcm_hw_init() before calling any
soc_pcm_hw_update_*() functions.
Remove the conditional code on runtime->hw.formats as this field
is anyways set in soc_pcm_hw_init().

If we read it carefully, we can notice that it is consisted by

FE is connected to two BEs, BE1 is active, BE2 is deactive.
When closing BE1, FE/BE1 is in HW_FREE state, then BE2 is
startup by mixer runtime update.
For FE is in HW_FREE state, dpcm_run_update_startup() will skip
BE2's startup because FE's state is HW_FREE, BE2 stays in FE's

During FE's closed, the dpcm_fe_dai_close() will close all related

A recent change removed the call to send the DAPM_STREAM_STOP
event in dpcm_fe_dai_shutdown. But this causes a regression
when a PCM prepare is not paired with a hw_free. So, add
the DAPM_STREAM_STOP event back to dpcm_fe_dai_shutdown()
to fix this.
The new sequence would be:
soc_pcm_prepare()
-> SND_SOC_DAPM_STREAM_START
soc_pcm_hw_free()
-> soc_pcm_hw_free()
-> SND_SOC_DAPM_STREAM_STOP
dpcm_fe_dai_shutdown()
-> SND_SOC_DAPM_STREAM_STOP
Note that the DAPM_STREAM_STOP will be called twice but it seems
harmless.

Currently, the SND_SOC_DAPM_STREAM_START event is sent during
pcm_prepare() but the SND_SOC_DAPM_STREAM_STOP event is
sent only in dpcm_fe_dai_shutdown() after soc_pcm_close().
This results in an imbalance between when the DAPM widgets
receive the PRE/POST_PMU/PMD events. So call
snd_soc_dapm_stream_stop() in soc_pcm_hw_clean() before the
snd_soc_pcm_component_hw_free() to keep the stream_stop DAPM
event balanced with the stream_start event in soc_pm_prepare().
Also, in order to prevent duplicate DAPM stream events,
remove the call for DAPM STREAM_START event in dpcm_fe_dai_prepare()
and the call for DAPM STREAM_STOP event in dpcm_fe_dai_shutdown().

The idea of having bit-flag or counter is not enough for this purpose.
For example if one DAI is used for 2xPlaybacks for some reasons,

2nd Playback rollback doesn't need to call shutdown.
But it has succeeded bit-flag or counter via 1st Playback,
thus, 2nd Playback rollback will call unneeded shutdown.
And 1st Playback's necessary shutdown will not be called,
because bit-flag or counter was cleared by wrong 2nd Playback rollback.
To avoid such case, this patch marks substream pointer when hw_params() was

One note here is that it cares *previous* hw_params() only now,

soc_pcm_open() does rollback when failed (A),
but, it is almost same as soc_pcm_close().
static int soc_pcm_open(xxx)

goto xxx_err;
...
return 0;
^ config_err:

| component_err:

v return ret;
}
The difference is
soc_pcm_close() is for all dai/component/substream,
rollback is for succeeded part only.
This kind of duplicated code can be a hotbed of bugs,
thus, we want to share soc_pcm_close() and rollback.
Now, soc_pcm_open/close() are handling
1) snd_soc_dai_startup/shutdown()
2) snd_soc_link_startup/shutdown()
3) snd_soc_component_module_get/put()
4) snd_soc_component_open/close()
=> 5) pm_runtime_put/get()
This patch is for 5) pm_runtime_put/get().
The idea of having bit-flag or counter is not enough for this purpose.
For example if one DAI is used for 2xPlaybacks for some reasons,
and if 1st Playback was succeeded but 2nd Playback was failed,
2nd Playback rollback doesn't need to call shutdown.
But it has succeeded bit-flag or counter via 1st Playback,
thus, 2nd Playback rollback will call unneeded shutdown.
And 1st Playback's necessary shutdown will not be called,
because bit-flag or counter was cleared by wrong 2nd Playback rollback.
To avoid such case, this patch marks substream pointer when get() was
succeeded. If rollback needed, it will check rollback flag and marked
substream pointer.
One note here is that it cares *current* get() only now.
but we might want to check *whole* marked substream in the future.
This patch is using macro named "push/pop", so that it can be easily
update.

Previous updates to set dailink capabilities and check dailink
capabilities were based on a flawed assumption that all dais support
the same capabilities as the dailink. This is true for TDM
configurations but existing configurations use an amplifier and a
capture device on the same dailink, and the tests would prevent the
card from probing.
This patch modifies the snd_soc_dai_link_set_capabilities()
helper so that the dpcm_playback (resp. dpcm_capture) dailink
capabilities are set if at least one dai supports playback (resp. capture).
Likewise the checks are modified so that an error is reported only
when dpcm_playback (resp. dpcm_capture) is set but none of the CPU
DAIs support playback (resp. capture).

At the moment, PCM devices for DPCM are only created based on the
dpcm_playback/capture parameters of the DAI link, without considering
if the CPU/FE DAI is actually capable of playback/capture.
Normally the dpcm_playback/capture parameter should match the
capabilities of the CPU DAI. However, there is no way to set that
parameter from the device tree (e.g. with simple-audio-card or
qcom sound cards). dpcm_playback/capture are always both set to 1.
This causes problems when the CPU DAI does only support playback
or capture. Attemting to open that PCM device with an unsupported
stream type then results in a null pointer dereference:
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000128

... because the DAI playback/capture_widget is not set in that case.
We could add checks there to fix the problem (maybe we should
anyway), but much easier is to not expose the device as
playback/capture in the first place. Attemting to use that
device would always fail later anyway.
Add checks for snd_soc_dai_stream_valid() to the DPCM case
to avoid exposing playback/capture if it is not supported.

ASoC component open/close and snd_soc_component_module_get/put are called
independently for each component-substream pair, so the logic added in
commit dd03907bf1 ("ASoC: soc-pcm: call snd_soc_component_open/close()

Implement handling of failures directly in soc_pcm_components_open(),
so that any successfully opened components are closed upon error with
other components. This allows to clean up error handling in

Commit af4bac1153 ("ASoC: soc-pcm: crash in snd_soc_dapm_new_dai")
swapped the SNDRV_PCM_STREAM_* parameter in the
snd_soc_dai_stream_valid(cpu_dai, ...) checks. But that works only
for codec2codec links. For normal links it breaks registration of
playback/capture-only PCM devices.
E.g. on qcom/apq8016_sbc there is usually one playback-only and one
capture-only PCM device, but they disappeared after the commit.
The codec2codec case was added in commit a342031cdd
("ASoC: create pcm for codec2codec links as well") as an extra check
(e.g. `playback = playback && cpu_playback->channels_min`).
We should be able to simplify the code by checking directly for
the correct stream type in the loop.
This also fixes the regression because we check for PLAYBACK for
both codec and cpu dai again when codec2codec is not used.

At first, soc_pcm_open() operation order is
1) CPU DAI startup
2) Component open
3) Codec DAI startup
4) rtd startup
But here, 2) will call try_module_get() if component has
module_get_upon_open flags. This means 1) CPU DAI startup
will be operated *before* its module was loaded.
DAI should be called *after* Component.
Second, soc_pcm_close() operation order is
1) CPU DAI shutdown
2) Codec DAI shutdown
3) rtd shutdown
4) Component close
soc_pcm_open() and soc_pcm_close() are paired function,
but, its operation order is unbalance.
This patch tidyup soc_pcm_open() order to Component -> rtd -> DAI.

Current soc_pcm_open() calls snd_soc_component_open() under loop.
Thus, it needs to care about opened/not-yet-opened Component.
But, if soc-component.c is handling it, soc-pcm.c don't need to care
about it.
This patch adds opened flag to soc-component.h, and simplify soc-pcm.c.

Current soc-pcm is using bit-OR'ed error
ret |= snd_soc_component_close(component, substream);
ret |= snd_soc_component_hw_free(component, substream);
The driver may return arbitrary error codes so they can conflict.
The bit-OR'ed error works only if the return code is always consistent.
This patch fixup it, and use *last* ret value.

commit 3635bf09a8 ("ASoC: soc-pcm: add symmetry for channels and
sample bits") set 0 not only to dai->rate but also to dai->channels and
dai->sample_bits if DAI was not active at soc_pcm_close().
and
commit d3383420c9 ("ASoC: soc-pcm: move DAIs parameters cleaning into
hw_free()") moved it from soc_pcm_close() to soc_pcm_hw_free().
These happen at v3.14.
But, maybe because of branch merge conflict or something similar happen
then, soc_pcm_close() still has old settings
(care only dai->rate, doesn't care dai->channels/sample_bits).
This is 100% duplicated operation.
This patch removes soc_pcm_close() side operation which supposed to
already moved to soc_pcm_hw_free().

ALSA SoC has snd_soc_runtime_activate() / snd_soc_runtime_deactivate().
These increment or decrement DAI/Component activity, but the code
difference is only +1 or -1.
This patch adds common snd_soc_runtime_action() which can get +1 or -1 as
parameter, and use it from snd_soc_runtime_activate/deactivate() to
avoid duplicate implementation.
