The existing code maximizes confusion by using 'stream' and 'hstream'
variables of different types. Examples:
struct hdac_stream *stream;
struct hdac_ext_stream *stream;
struct hdac_stream *hstream;
struct hdac_ext_stream *hstream;
with some additional copy/paste remains:
struct hdac_ext_stream *azx_dev;
This patch suggests a consistent naming across all 'hdac_ext_stream'
functions. The convention is:
struct hdac_stream *hstream;
struct hdac_ext_stream *hext_stream;
No functionality change - just renaming of variables and more
consistent indentation.

HDA uses a timecounter to read a hardware clock running at 24 MHz. The
conversion factor is set with a mult value of 125 and a shift value of 0,
which is not converting the hardware clock to nanoseconds, it is converting
to 1/3 nanoseconds because the conversion factor from 24Mhz to nanoseconds
is 125/3. The usage sites divide the "nanoseconds" value returned by
timecounter_read() by 3 to get a real nanoseconds value.
There is a lengthy comment in azx_timecounter_init() explaining this
choice. That comment makes blatantly wrong assumptions about how
timecounters work and what can overflow.
The comment says:
* Applying the 1/3 factor as part of the multiplication
* requires at least 20 bits for a decent precision, however
* overflows occur after about 4 hours or less, not a option.
timecounters operate on time deltas between two readouts of a clock and use
the mult/shift pair to calculate a precise nanoseconds value:
delta_nsec = (delta_clock * mult) >> shift;
The fractional part is also taken into account and preserved to prevent
accumulated rounding errors. For details see cyclecounter_cyc2ns().
The mult/shift pair has to be chosen so that the multiplication of the
maximum expected delta value does not result in a 64bit overflow. As the
counter wraps around on 32bit, the maximum observable delta between two
reads is (1 << 32) - 1 which is about 178.9 seconds.
That in turn means the maximum multiplication factor which fits into an u32
will not cause a 64bit overflow ever because it's guaranteed that:
((1 << 32) - 1) ^ 2 < (1 << 64)
The resulting correct multiplication factor is 2796202667 and the shift
value is 26, i.e. 26 bit precision. The overflow of the multiplication
would happen exactly at a clock readout delta of 6597069765 which is way
after the wrap around of the hardware clock at around 274.8 seconds which
is off from the claimed 4 hours by more than an order of magnitude.
If the counter ever wraps around the last read value then the calculation
is off by the number of wrap arounds times 178.9 seconds because the
overflow cannot be observed.
Use clocks_calc_mult_shift(), which calculates the most accurate mult/shift
pair based on the given clock frequency, and remove the bogus comment along
with the divisions at the readout sites.

The snd_hdac_bus_reset_link() contains logic to clear STATESTS register
before performing controller reset. This code dates back to an old
bugfix in commit e8a7f136f5 ("[ALSA] hda-intel - Improve HD-audio
codec probing robustness"). Originally the code was added to
azx_reset().
The code was moved around in commit a41d122449 ("ALSA: hda - Embed bus
into controller object") and ended up to snd_hdac_bus_reset_link() and
called primarily via snd_hdac_bus_init_chip().
The logic to clear STATESTS is correct when snd_hdac_bus_init_chip() is
called when controller is not in reset. In this case, STATESTS can be
cleared. This can be useful e.g. when forcing a controller reset to retry
codec probe. A normal non-power-on reset will not clear the bits.
However, this old logic is problematic when controller is already in
reset. The HDA specification states that controller must be taken out of
reset before writing to registers other than GCTL.CRST (1.0a spec,
3.3.7). The write to STATESTS in snd_hdac_bus_reset_link() will be lost
if the controller is already in reset per the HDA specification mentioned.
This has been harmless on older hardware. On newer generation of Intel
PCIe based HDA controllers, if configured to report issues, this write
will emit an unsupported request error. If ACPI Platform Error Interface
(APEI) is enabled in kernel, this will end up to kernel log.
Fix the code in snd_hdac_bus_reset_link() to only clear the STATESTS if
the function is called when controller is not in reset. Otherwise
clearing the bits is not possible and should be skipped.

A new control access group (three bits in the access flags)

is not exported to the user space, but user space can

configurable in the kernel and user space (UCM).
The actual state ('route') evaluation is really easy
(the minimal value check for all channels / controls / cards).
If there's more complicated logic for a given hardware,
the card driver may eventually export a new read-only
sound control for the LED group and do the logic itself.
The new LED trigger control code is completely separated
and possibly optional (there's no symbol dependency).
The full code separation allows eventually to move this
LED trigger control to the user space in future.
Actually it replaces the already present functionality
in the kernel space (HDA drivers) and allows a quick adoption
for the recent hardware (ASoC codecs including SoundWire).

This reverts commit f8e4ae10de ("ALSA: hda: Allow setting
preallocation again for x86").
The reverted commit itself is a revert of c31427d0d2 ("ALSA: hda: No
preallocation on x86 platforms"). It was needed because HDA allowed very
big allocations, up to 1GB per stream. However as previous commit in
this series changes maximum allowed allocation per stream to 4MB, we can
safely revert it back.
On systems where there are a lot of FrontEnds, when
CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE != 0 ALSA core allocates memory for each
FE, which may cause out of memory problems due to per card limit. Force
config to 0 on X86, so memory will be allocated on as needed basis.

On some Lenovo systems if the microphone is disabled in the BIOS
only the NHLT table header is created, with no data. This means
the endpoints field is not correctly set to zero - leading to an
unintialised variable and hence invalid descriptors are parsed
leading to page faults.
The Lenovo firmware team is addressing this, but adding a check
preventing invalid tables being parsed is worthwhile.

The ACPI scan capabilities is called from the intel-dspconfig as well
as the SOF/HDaudio drivers. This creates dependencies and randconfig issues
when HDaudio and SOF/SoundWire are not all configured as modules.
To simplify Kconfig dependencies between HDAudio, SoundWire, SOF and
intel-dspconfig, move the ACPI scan helpers to a dedicated
module. This follows the same idea as NHLT helpers which are already
handled as a dedicated module.
The only functional change is that the kernel parameter to filter
links is now handled by a different module, but that was only provided
for developers needing work-arounds for early BIOS releases.

Multiple bug reports report issues with the SOF and SST drivers when
dealing with single microphone cases.
We currently read the DMIC array information unconditionally but we
don't check that the configuration type is actually a mic array.
When the DMIC link does not rely on a mic array configuration, the
recommendation is to check the format information to infer the maximum
number of channels, and map this to the number of microphones.
This leaves a potential for a mismatch between actual microphones
available in hardware and what the ACPI table contains, but we have no
other source of information.
Note that single microphone configurations can alternatively be
handled with a 'mic array' configuration along with a 'vendor-defined'
geometry.

The kernel has 2 drivers for the Low Power Engine audio-block on
Bay- and Cherry-Trail SoCs. The old SST driver and the new SOF
driver. If both drivers are enabled then the kernel will default
to using the old SST driver, unless told otherwise through the
snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver module-parameter.
Add a boolean SND_INTEL_BYT_PREFER_SOF Kconfig option, which when set to Y
will make the kernel default to the new SOF driver instead.
The option defaults to n, preserving the current behavior.
Making this configurable will help distributions such as Fedora:
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=Changes/SofDefaultForIntelLpe
to test using SOF on BYT/CHT during the transition phase where we
have both drivers (eventually the old driver and this option will
be removed).
Note that this drops the acpi_config_table[] containing 2 entries per ACPI
hardware-id if both drivers are enabled. snd_intel_acpi_dsp_find_config()
will always return the first hit, so we only need a single entry with the
flags value set depending on the Kconfig settings.

The extended HDA bus (hdac_ext) provides interfaces for more
fine-grained control of individual links than what plain HDA
provides for. Links can be powered off when they are not used and if
all links are released, controller can shut down the command DMA.
These interfaces are currently not used by common HDA codec drivers.
When a HDA codec is runtime suspended, it calls snd_hdac_codec_link_down(),
but there is no link to the HDA extended bus, and on controller side
the links are shut down only when all codecs are suspended.
This patch adds link_power() to hdac_bus ops. Controllers using the HDA
extended core, can use this to plug in snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_power() to
implement more fine-grained control of link power.
No change is needed for plain HDA controllers nor to existing HDA
codec drivers.

On Haswell/Broadwell/Baytrail/Braswell, the DSP is not used for the
HDMI/DP interface, and setting the dsp_driver parameter to a value > 1
has the side effect of preventing the HDaudio legacy driver from
probing.
The DSP driver selection should really only handle cases where a DSP
is actually used. This patch traps all known PCI devices and makes
sure the HDaudio driver can always be probed.

Current hdac_i915 uses a static completion instance to wait
for i915 driver to complete the component bind.
This design is not safe if multiple HDA controllers are active and

To provide backward compatibility to older systems, the SOF HDA driver
allows user to specify which HDMI codec driver to use at runtime via
kernel parameter. This mechanism has a subtle flaw in that it assumes
the codec drivers not to be loaded when the SOF PCI driver is loaded.
The problem is rooted in use of the hdev->type field.
snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_init() initializes this field to HDA_DEV_ASOC.
This signals the HDA core that ASoC drivers should be considered in
driver matching (hda_bus_match()). The SOF and SST drivers continue by
overriding this field to HDA_DEV_LEGACY and proceeding to load driver
modules with request_module(). Correct drivers will get loaded and
attached.
If however the codec drivers are already loaded when
snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_init() is called, the matching will not work as
expected as device type is still set to HDA_DEV_ASOC. Specifically if
hdac-hdmi is attached when machine driver is configured to use hdac-hda,
this leads to out-of-bounds memory access in
hda_dsp_hdmi_build_controls().
Fix the issue by adding codec type as a parameter to
snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_init() and ensuring type is set correctly from
the start.

increase child_count in parent device. But when it is failed
to build connection with GPU for one case that integrated
graphic gpu is disabled, snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_exit will be

it will not decrease child_count if the device is already suspended.

should follow the same trend by merging the two cases in a backwards
compatible way.
The backwards compatibility is handled by overloading the COMETLAKE_LP
kconfig as COMETLAKE. In practice we've never seen a case where
COMETLAKE_H is not selected along with COMETLAKE_LP, so keeping one
of the two is enough.

The unsol event handling code has a loop retrieving the read/write
indices and the arrays without locking while the append to the array
may happen concurrently. This may lead to some inconsistency.
Although there hasn't been any proof of this bad results, it's still
safer to protect the racy accesses.
This patch adds the spinlock protection around the unsol handling loop
for addressing it. Here we take bus->reg_lock as the writer side
snd_hdac_bus_queue_event() is also protected by that lock.

The commit c31427d0d2 ("ALSA: hda: No preallocation on x86
platforms") changed CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE setup and its default
to zero for x86, as the preallocation should work almost all cases.
However, this expectation was too naive; some applications try to
allocate as the max buffer size as possible, and it leads to the
memory exhaustion. More badly, the commit changed the kconfig no
longer adjustable for x86, so you can't fix it statically (although it
can be still adjusted via procfs).
So, practically seen, it's more recommended to set a reasonable limit
for x86, too. This patch follows to that experience, and changes the
default to 2048 and allow the kconfig adjustable again.

snprintf() returns the expected would-be length instead. When the

Use scnprintf() for addressing those issues. It returns the actually

Tegra HDA has FIFO size which can hold upto 10 audio frames to support
DVFS. When HDA DMA RUN bit is set to 0 to stop the stream, the DMA RUN
bit will be cleared to 0 only after transferring all the remaining audio
frames queued up in the fifo. This is not in sync with spec which states
the controller will stop transmitting(output) in the beginning of the
next frame for the relevant stream.
The above behavior with Tegra HDA was resulting in machine check error
during the system suspend flow with active audio playback with below kernel
error logs.
[ 33.524583] mc-err: [mcerr] (hda) csr_hdar: EMEM address decode error
[ 33.531088] mc-err: [mcerr] status = 0x20000015; addr = 0x00000000
[ 33.537431] mc-err: [mcerr] secure: no, access-type: read, SMMU fault: none
This was due to the fifo has more than one audio frame when the DMA
RUN bit is set to 0 during system suspend flow and the timeout handling in
snd_hdac_stream_sync() was not designed to handle this scenario. So the
DMA will continue running even after timeout hit until all remaining
audio frames in the fifo are transferred, but the suspend flow will try
to reset the controller and turn off the hda clocks without the knowledge
of the DMA is still running and could result in mc-err.
The above issue can be resolved by doing stream reset with the help of
snd_hdac_stream_reset() which would ensure the DMA RUN bit is cleared
if the timeout was hit in snd_hdac_stream_sync().

Like many other drivers, HD-audio drivers also do PCM buffer
preallocation to assure the buffer pages allocated at the early boot
stage. This step is useful for platforms that may fail to allocate
the PCM hardware buffers -- which is mostly for either large
continuous pages or with the specific DMA mask (like emu10k1).
OTOH, when a buffer is allocated as SG-buffer and the DMA mask is
either 32 or 64 bits, the allocation almost never fails unless it hits
the real OOM situation. In such a case, we don't need the
preallocation inevitably unlike the cases above.
That said, we may drop the preallocation for HD-audio that does
allocate via SG-buffers, and the patch achieves it.
However, there is one caveat: the buffer allocation behavior depends
on CONFIG_SND_DMA_SGBUF, and it falls back to the continuous pages
when it's not set. And, currently this SG buffer allocation is
enabled only on x86 platforms. So, covering those fall-outs, the
patch adjusts CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE depending on the condition,
and keeps the old behavior as-is for non-x86 platforms.
On x86, the kconfig item is no longer adjustable but always set to
zero for disabling the preallocation. You can still enable the
preallocation via procfs interface at any time later, too.

In the commit 8e85def572 ("ALSA: hda: enable regmap internal
locking"), we re-enabled the regmap lock due to the reported
regression that showed the possible concurrent accesses. It was a
temporary workaround, and there are still a few opened races even
after the revert. In this patch, we cover those still opened windows
with a proper mutex lock and disable the regmap internal lock again.
First off, the patch introduces a new snd_hdac_device.regmap_lock
mutex that is applied for each snd_hdac_regmap_*() call, including
read, write and update helpers. The mutex is applied carefully so
that it won't block the self-power-up procedure in the helper
function. Also, this assures the protection for the accesses without
regmap, too.
The snd_hdac_regmap_update_raw() is refactored to use the standard
regmap_update_bits_check() function instead of the open-code. The
non-regmap case is still open-coded but it's an easy part. The all
read and write operations are in the single mutex protection, so it's
now race-free.
In addition, a couple of new helper functions are added:
snd_hdac_regmap_update_raw_once() and snd_hdac_regmap_sync(). Both
are called from HD-audio legacy driver. The former is to initialize
the given verb bits but only once when it's not initialized yet. Due
to this condition, the function invokes regcache_cache_only(), and
it's now performed inside the regmap_lock (formerly it was racy) too.
The latter function is for simply invoking regcache_sync() inside the
regmap_lock, which is called from the codec resume call path.
Along with that, the HD-audio codec driver code is slightly modified /
simplified to adapt those new functions.
And finally, snd_hdac_regmap_read_raw(), *_write_raw(), etc are
rewritten with the helper macro. It's just for simplification because
the code logic is identical among all those functions.

The commit e38e486d66 ("ALSA: hda: Modify stream stripe mask only

application of the stripe mask, but this caused yet another
regression for the previously working devices. Namely, the patch
clears the azx_dev->stripe flag at snd_hdac_stream_clear(), but this
may be called multiple times before restarting the stream, so this
ended up with clearance of the flag for the whole time.
This patch fixes the regression by moving the azx_dev->stripe flag
clearance at the counter-part, the close callback of HDMI codec
driver instead.

- the debug message for the stalled communication

The HD-audio CORB/RIRB communication was programmed in a way that was
documented in the reference in decades ago, which is essentially a
polling in the waiter side. It's working fine but costs CPU cycles on
some platforms that support only slow communications. Also, for some
platforms that had unreliable communications, we put longer wait time
(2 ms), which accumulate quite long time if you execute many verbs in
a shot (e.g. at the initialization or resume phase).
This patch attempts to improve the situation by introducing the
standard waitqueue in the RIRB waiter side instead of polling. The
test results on my machine show significant improvements. The time
spent for "cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#*" were changed like:
* Intel SKL + Realtek codec
before the patch:
0.00user 0.04system 0:00.10elapsed 40.0%CPU
after the patch:
0.00user 0.01system 0:00.10elapsed 10.0%CPU
* Nvidia GP107GL + Nvidia HDMI codec
before the patch:
0.00user 0.00system 0:02.76elapsed 0.0%CPU
after the patch:
0.00user 0.00system 0:00.01elapsed 17.0%CPU
So, for Intel chips, the total time is same, while the total time is
greatly reduced (from 2.76 to 0.01s) for Nvidia chips.
The only negative data here is the increase of CPU time for Nvidia,
but this is the unavoidable cost for faster wakeups, supposedly.

Since we apply the own mutex (bus->cmd_mutex) in HDA core side, the
internal locking in regmap is superfluous. This patch adds the flag
to indicate that.
Also, an infamous side-effect by this change is that it disables the
regmap debugfs, too, and this is seen rather good; the regmap debugfs
isn't quite useful for HD-audio as it provides the very sparse
registers and its debugfs access tends to lead to the way too high
resource usages or sometimes hang up. So it'd be rather safe to
disable it altogether.

For distributions, we need one place where we can decide
which driver will be activated for the auto-configation of the
Intel's HDA hardware with DSP. Actually, we cover three drivers:
* Legacy HDA
* Intel SST
* Intel Sound Open Firmware (SOF)
All those drivers registers similar PCI IDs, so the first
driver probed from the PCI stack can win. But... it is not
guaranteed that the correct driver wins.
This commit changes Intel's NHLT ACPI module to a common
DSP probe module for the Intel's hardware. All above sound
drivers calls this code. The user can force another behaviour
using the module parameter 'dsp_driver' located in

This reverts commit ee5f85d929 ("ALSA: hda: Add codec on bus address
table lately"). The commit caused several regression since I've
overlooked that the function doesn't manage only the caddr_tbl but
also the codec linked list that is referred indirectly in the other
drivers.
Revert for now to make everything back to work.

snd_hdac_bus_add_device() and snd_hdac_remove_device() are called only
internally in hda-core. Let's drop the exports of them and move the
declarations into local.h.
Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
The call of snd_hdac_bus_add_device() is needed only for registering
the codec onto the bus caddr_tbl[] that is referred essentially only
in the unsol event handler. That is, the reason of this call and the
release by the counter-part function snd_hdac_bus_remove_device() is
just to assure that the unsol event gets notified to the codec.
But the current implementation of the unsol notification wouldn't work
properly when the codec is still in a premature init state. So this
patch tries to work around it by delaying the caddr_tbl[] registration
at the point of snd_hdac_device_register().
Also, the order of snd_hdac_bus_remove_device() and device_del() calls
are shuffled to make sure that the unsol event is masked before
deleting the device.

Currently we set hdac_stream.fifo_size field only for the playback
stream by some odd reason I forgot, while this field isn't referred in
any places. Actually this fifo_size field would have been required in
the position report correction for VIA chipset, but due to the lack of
the fifo_size set for capture streams, snd-hda-intel driver fetches
the register by itself.
This patch straightens and simplifies the code by setting the
fifo_size field for both playback and capture streams, and use it in
the HD-audio controller driver.

HD-audio drivers access to the mmio registers indirectly via the
corresponding bus->io_ops callbacks. This is because some platform
(notably Tegra SoC) requires the word-aligned access. But it's rather
a rare case, and other platforms suffer from the penalties by indirect
calls unnecessarily.
This patch is an attempt to optimize and cleanup for this situation.
Now the special aligned access is used only when a new kconfig
CONFIG_SND_HDA_ALIGNED_MMIO is set. And the HD-audio core itself
provides the aligned MMIO access helpers instead of the driver side.
If Kconfig isn't set (as default), the standard helpers like readl()
or writel() are used directly.
A couple of places in ASoC Intel drivers have the access via io_ops
reg_writel(), and they are replaced with the direct writel() calls.
And now with this patch, the whole bus->io_ops becomes empty, so it's
dropped completely. The bus initialization functions are changed
accordingly as well to drop the whole bus->io_ops.

The HD-audio core allocates and releases pages via driver's specific
dma_alloc_pages and dma_free_pages ops defined in bus->io_ops. This
was because some platforms require the uncached pages and the handling
of page flags had to be done locally in the driver code.
Since the recent change in ALSA core memory allocator, we can simply
pass SNDRV_DMA_TYPE_DEV_UC for the uncached pages, and the only
difference became about this type to be passed to the core allocator.
That is, it's good time for cleaning up the mess.
This patch changes the allocation code in HD-audio core to call the
core allocator directly so that we get rid of dma_alloc_pages and
dma_free_pages io_ops. If a driver needs the uncached pages, it has
to set bus->dma_type right after the bus initialization.
This is merely a code refactoring and shouldn't bring any behavior
changes.

Distribution installation images such as Debian include different sets
of modules which can be downloaded dynamically. Such images may notably
include the hda sound modules but not the i915 DRM module, even if the
latter was enabled at build time, as reported on
https://bugs.debian.org/931507
In such a case hdac_i915 would be linked in and try to load the i915

before giving up binding with it.
This fixes such as case by only waiting for the binding if the module

is already compiled-in anyway).

Along with the recent fix for the races of snd_hdac_refresh_widgets()
it turned out that the instantiation of widgets sysfs at
snd_hdac_sysfs_reinit() could cause a race. The race itself was
already covered later by extending the mutex protection range, the
commit 98482377dc ("ALSA: hda: Fix widget_mutex incomplete
protection"), but this also indicated that the call of *_reinit() is
basically superfluous, as the widgets shall be created sooner or later
from snd_hdac_device_register().
This patch removes the redundant call of snd_hdac_sysfs_reinit() at
first. By this removal, the sysfs argument itself in
snd_hdac_refresh_widgets() becomes superfluous, too, because the only
case sysfs=false is always with codec->widgets=NULL. So, we drop this
redundant argument as well.
Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
The widget_mutex was introduced to serialize callers to
hda_widget_sysfs_{re}init. However, its protection of the sysfs widget array
is incomplete. For example, it is acquired around the call to
hda_widget_sysfs_reinit(), which actually creates the new array, but isn't
still acquired when codec->num_nodes and codec->start_nid is updated. So
the lock ensures one thread sets up the new array at a time, but doesn't
ensure which thread's value will end up in codec->num_nodes. If a larger
num_nodes wins but a smaller array was set up, the next call to
refresh_widgets() will touch free memory as it iterates over codec->num_nodes
that aren't there.
The widget_lock really protects both the tree as well as codec->num_nodes,
start_nid, and end_nid, so make sure it's held across that update. It should
also be held during snd_hdac_get_sub_nodes(), so that a very old read from that
function doesn't end up clobbering a later update.

To save power, the hda hdmi driver in ASoC invokes snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_put
to disable CORB/RIRB buffers DMA if there is no user of bus and invokes
snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_get to set up CORB/RIRB buffers when it is used.
Unsolicited responses is disabled in snd_hdac_bus_stop_cmd_io called by
snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_put , but it is not enabled in snd_hdac_bus_init_cmd_io
called by snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_get. So for put-get sequence, Unsolicited
responses is disabled and headphone can't be detected by hda codecs.
Now unsolicited responses is only enabled in snd_hdac_bus_reset_link
which resets controller. The function is only called for setup of
controller. This patch enables Unsolicited responses after RIRB is
initialized in snd_hdac_bus_init_cmd_io which works together with
snd_hdac_bus_reset_link to set up controller.

As there is currently no devices with multiple hda codecs and there is

During the integration of HDaudio support, we changed the way in which
we get hdev in snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_init() to use one preallocated
with devm_kzalloc(), however it still left kfree(hdev) in
snd_hdac_ext_bus_device_exit(). It leads to oopses when trying to
rmmod and modprobe. Fix it, by just removing kfree call.
SOF also uses some of the snd_hdac_ functions for HDAudio support but
allocated the memory with kzalloc. A matching fix is provided

The most significant changes at this cycle are the Sound Open Firmware
support from Intel for the common DSP framework along with its support
for Intel platforms. It's a door opened to a real "free" firmware (in
the sense of FOSS), and other parties show interests in it.
In addition to SOF, we've got a bunch of updates and fixes as usual.
Some highlights are below.
ALSA core:
- Cleanups and fixes in ALSA timer code to cover some races spotted
by syzkaller
- Cleanups and fixes in ALSA sequencer code to cover some races,
again unsurprisingly, spotted by syzkaller
- Optimize the common page allocation helper with alloc_pages_exact()
ASoC:
- Add SOF core support, as well as Intel SOF platform support
- Generic card driver improvements: support for MCLK/sample rate
ratio and pin switches
- A big set of improvements to TLV320AIC32x4 drivers
- New drivers for Freescale audio mixers, several Intel machines,
several Mediatek machines, Meson G12A, Spreadtrum compressed audio
and DMA devices
HD-audio:
- A few Realtek codec fixes for reducing pop noises
- Quirks for Chromebooks
- Workaround for faulty connection report on AMD/Nvidia HDMI
Others:
- A quirk for Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB-audio
- Add support for MOTU 8pre FireWire
- 24bit sample format support in aloop
- GUS patch format support (finally, over a decade) in native
emux synth code

Some fields in snd_hdac_bus are ext-bus specific, but they still
should be initialized in snd_hdac_bus_init() for consistency, at
least, for the ones that do need the explicit initialization like the
list head.
Also move the lock field to the more appropriate place and correct the
comment to reflect the recent change where it serves for both the
display power and the link management.

A few core fixes along with the driver specific ones, mainly fixing
small issues that only affect x86 platforms for various reasons (their
unusual machine enumeration mechanisms mainly, plus a fix for error
handling in topology).
There's some of the driver fixes that look larger than they are, like
the hdmi-codec changes which resulted in an indentation change, and most
of the other large changes are for new drivers like the STM32 changes.

snd_hdac_display_power() doesn't handle the concurrent calls carefully
enough, and it may lead to the doubly get_power or put_power calls,
when a runtime PM and an async work get called in racy way.
This patch addresses it by reusing the bus->lock mutex that has been
used for protecting the link state change in ext bus code, so that it
can protect against racy display state changes. The initialization of
bus->lock was moved from snd_hdac_ext_bus_init() to
snd_hdac_bus_init() as well accordingly.

Here is the big char/misc driver patch pull request for 5.1-rc1.
The largest thing by far is the new habanalabs driver for their AI
accelerator chip. For now it is in the drivers/misc directory but will
probably move to a new directory soon along with other drivers of this
type.
Other than that, just the usual set of individual driver updates and
fixes. There's an "odd" merge in here from the DRM tree that they asked
me to do as the MEI driver is starting to interact with the i915 driver,
and it needed some coordination. All of those patches have been

I set 10 seconds for the timeout of the i915 audio component binding
with a hope that recent machines are fast enough to handle all probe
tasks in that period, but I was too optimistic. The binding may take
longer than that, and this caused a problem on the machine with both
audio and graphics driver modules loaded in parallel, as Paul Menzel
experienced. This problem haven't hit so often just because the KMS
driver is loaded in initrd on most machines.
As a simple workaround, extend the timeout to 60 seconds.

drm/i915 is tracking all wakeref owners with a cookie in order to
identify leaks. To that end, each rpm acquisition ops->get_power is
assigned a cookie which should be passed to ops->put_power to signify
its release (and removal from the list of wakeref owners). As snd/hda is
already using a bool to track current status of display_power extending
that to an unsigned long to hold the boolean cookie is a trivial
extension, and will quell all doubt that snd/hda is the cause of the
device runtime pm leaks.

After the recent refactoring, snd_hdac_display_power() doesn't return
any error, hence it can be defined to return void.
This makes many error checks redundant and allows us to reduce them
gracefully.

The current HD-audio code manages the DRM audio power via too complex
redirections, and this seems even still unbalanced in a corner case as
Intel DRM CI has been intermittently reporting. This patch is a big
surgery for addressing the complexity and the possible unbalance.
Basically the patch changes the display PM in the following ways:
- Both HD-audio controller and codec drivers call a single helper,
snd_hdac_display_power(). (Formerly, the display power control from
a codec was done indirectly via link_power bus ops.)
- snd_hdac_display_power() receives the codec address index. For
turning on/off from the controller, pass HDA_CODEC_IDX_CONTROLLER.
- snd_hdac_display_power() doesn't manage refcounts any longer, but
keeps the power status in bitmap. If any of controller or codecs is
turned on, the function updates the DRM power state via get_power()
or put_power().
Also this refactor allows us more cleanup:
- The link_power bus ops is dropped, so there is no longer indirect
management, as mentioned in the above.
- hdac_device link_power_control flag is moved to hda_codec
display_power_control flag, as it's only for HDA legacy.

There have been little changes in ALSA core stuff, but ASoC core still
kept rolling for the continued restructuring. The rest are lots of
small driver-specific changes and some minor API updates.
Here are highlights:
General:
- Appropriate fall-through annotations everywhere
- Some code cleanup in memalloc code, handling non-cacahed pages more
commonly in the helper
- Deployment of SNDRV_PCM_INFO_SYNC_APPLPTR flag consistently
Drivers:
- More HD-audio CA0132 codec improvement for supporting other Creative
boards
- Plumbing legacy HD-audio codecs as ASoC BE on Intel SST; this will
give move support of existing HD-audio devices with DSP
- A few device-specific HD-audio quirks as usual
- New quirk for RME CC devices and correction for B&W PX for USB-audio
- FireWire: code refactoring including devres usages
ASoC Core:
- Continued componentization works; it's almost done!
- A bunch of new for_each_foo macros
- Cleanups and fixes in DAPM code
ASoC Drivers:
- MCLK support for several different devices, including CS42L51, STM32
SAI, and MAX98373
- Support for Allwinner A64 CODEC analog, Intel boards with DA7219 and
MAX98927, Meson AXG PDM inputs, Nuvoton NAU8822, Renesas R8A7744 and
TI PCM3060
