Page fault handlers might need to fire MMU notifications while a new
notifier is being registered. Modify mm_take_all_locks to write-lock all
VMAs and prevent this race with page fault handlers that would hold VMA
locks. VMAs are locked before i_mmap_rwsem and anon_vma to keep the same
locking order as in page fault handlers.

Normally free_pgtables needs to lock affected VMAs except for the case
when VMAs were isolated under VMA write-lock. munmap() does just that,
isolating while holding appropriate locks and then downgrading mmap_lock
and dropping per-VMA locks before freeing page tables. Add a parameter to
free_pgtables for such scenario.

Write-lock all VMAs which might be affected by a merge, split, expand or
shrink operations. All these operations use vma_prepare() before making
the modifications, therefore it provides a centralized place to perform
VMA locking.

Rather than setting err = -1 and only resetting if we hit merge cases,
explicitly check the non-mergeable case to make it abundantly clear that
we only proceed with the rest if something is mergeable, default err to 0
and only update if an error might occur.
Move the merge_prev, merge_next cases closer to the logic determining
curr, next and reorder initial variables so they are more logically
grouped.
This has no functional impact.

Previously, vma was an uninitialised variable which was only definitely
assigned as a result of the logic covering all possible input cases - for
it to have remained uninitialised, prev would have to be NULL, and next
would _have_ to be mergeable.
The value of res defaults to NULL, so we can neatly eliminate the
assignment to res and vma in the if (prev) block and ensure that both res
and vma are both explicitly assigned, by just setting both to prev.
In addition we add an explanation as to under what circumstances both
might change, and since we absolutely do rely on addr == curr->vm_start
should curr exist, assert that this is the case.

Use find_vma_intersection() and vma_lookup() to both simplify the logic
and to fold the end == next->vm_start condition into one block.
This groups all of the simple range checks together and establishes the
invariant that, if prev, curr or next are non-NULL then their positions
are as expected.
This has no functional impact.

Patch series "further cleanup of vma_merge()", v2.
Following on from Vlastimil Babka's patch series "cleanup vma_merge() and
improve mergeability tests" which was in turn based on Liam's prior
cleanups, this patch series introduces changes discussed in review of
Vlastimil's series and goes further in attempting to make the logic as
clear as possible.
Nearly all of this should have absolutely no functional impact, however it
does add a singular VM_WARN_ON() case.
With many thanks to Vernon for helping kick start the discussion around
simplification - abstract use of vma did indeed turn out not to be
necessary - and to Liam for his excellent suggestions which greatly
simplified things.
This patch (of 4):
Previously the ASCII diagram above vma_merge() and the accompanying
variable naming was rather confusing, however recent efforts by Liam
Howlett and Vlastimil Babka have significantly improved matters.
This patch goes a little further - replacing 'X' with 'N' which feels a
lot more natural and replacing what was 'N' with 'C' which stands for
'concurrent' VMA.
No word quite describes a VMA that has coincident start as the input span,
concurrent, abbreviated to 'curr' (and which can be thought of also as
'current') however fits intuitions well alongside prev and next.
This has no functional impact.

Since pre-git times, is_mergeable_vma() returns false for a vma with
vm_ops->close, so that no owner assumptions are violated in case the vma
is removed as part of the merge.
This check is currently very conservative and can prevent merging even
situations where vma can't be removed, such as simple expansion of
previous vma, as evidenced by commit d014cd7c1c ("mm, mremap: fix
mremap() expanding for vma's with vm_ops->close()")
In order to allow more merging when appropriate and simplify the code that
was made more complex by commit d014cd7c1c, start distinguishing cases
where the vma can be really removed, and allow merging with vm_ops->close
otherwise.
As a first step, add a may_remove_vma parameter to is_mergeable_vma().
can_vma_merge_before() sets it to true, because when called from
vma_merge(), a removal of the vma is possible.
In can_vma_merge_after(), pass the parameter as false, because no
removal can occur in each of its callers:
- vma_merge() calls it on the 'prev' vma, which is never removed
- mmap_region() and do_brk_flags() call it to determine if it can expand
a vma, which is not removed
As a result, vma's with vm_ops->close may now merge with compatible ranges
in more situations than previously. We can also revert commit
d014cd7c1c as the next step to simplify mremap code again.

There are several places where we test if 'mid' is really the area NNNN in
the diagram and the tests have two variants and are non-obvious to follow.
Instead, set 'mid' to NULL up-front if it's not the NNNN area, and
simplify the tests.

merged area, and the cases diagram shows it as XXXX. Case 4 is different

Case 1 is now shown in the comment as next vma being merged with prev, so
use 'next' instead of 'mid'. In case 1 they both point to the same vma.
As a consequence, in case 6, the dup_anon_vma() is now tried first on
'next' and then on 'mid', before it was the opposite order. This is not a
functional change, as those two vma's cannnot have a different anon_vma,
as that would have prevented the merging in the first place.

In case 3 we we use 'next' for everything but vma_pgoff. So use 'next'
for that as well, instead of 'mid', for consistency. Then in case 8 we
have to use 'mid' explicitly, which should also make the intent more
obvious.
Adjust the diagram for cases 1-3 in the comment to match the code - we are
using 'next' for case 3 so mark the range with XXXX instead of NNNN. For
case 2 that's a no-op as the code doesn't touch 'next' or 'mid'. For case
1 it's now wrong but that will be fixed next.
No functional change.

Patch series "cleanup vma_merge() and improve mergeability tests".
My initial goal here was to try making the check for vm_ops->close in
is_mergeable_vma() only be applied for vma's that would be truly removed
as part of the merge (see Patch 9). This would then allow reverting the
quick fix d014cd7c1c ("mm, mremap: fix mremap() expanding for vma's with
vm_ops->close()"). This was successful enough to allow the revert (Patch
10). Checks using can_vma_merge_before() are still pessimistic about
possible vma removal, and making them precise would probably complicate
the vma_merge() code too much.
Liam's 6.3-rc1 simplification of vma_merge() and removal of __vma_adjust()
was very much helpful in understanding the vma_merge() implementation and
especially when vma removals can happen, which is now very obvious. While
studing the code, I've found ways to make it hopefully even more easy to
follow, so that's the patches 1-8. That made me also notice a bug that's
now already fixed in 6.3-rc1.
This patch (of 10):
In the merging preparation part of vma_merge(), some vma pointer variables
are assigned for later execution of the merge, but also read from in the
block itself. The code is easier follow and check against the cases
diagram in the comment if the code reads only from the "primary" vma
variables prev, mid, next instead. No functional change.

Use the maple tree in RCU mode for VMA tracking.
The maple tree tracks the stack and is able to update the pivot
(lower/upper boundary) in-place to allow the page fault handler to write
to the tree while holding just the mmap read lock. This is safe as the
writes to the stack have a guard VMA which ensures there will always be a
NULL in the direction of the growth and thus will only update a pivot.
It is possible, but not recommended, to have VMAs that grow up/down
without guard VMAs. syzbot has constructed a testcase which sets up a VMA
to grow and consume the empty space. Overwriting the entire NULL entry
causes the tree to be altered in a way that is not safe for concurrent
readers; the readers may see a node being rewritten or one that does not
match the maple state they are using.
Enabling RCU mode allows the concurrent readers to see a stable node and
will return the expected result.

In case 4, we are shrinking 'prev' (PPPP in the comment) and expanding
'mid' (NNNN). So we need to make sure 'mid' clones the anon_vma from
'prev', if it doesn't have any. After commit 0503ea8f5b ("mm/mmap:
remove __vma_adjust()") we can fail to do that due to wrong parameters for
dup_anon_vma(). The call is a no-op because res == next, adjust == mid
and mid == next. Fix it.

There are scenarios when vm_flags can be modified without exclusive
mmap_lock, such as:
- after VMA was isolated and mmap_lock was downgraded or dropped
- in exit_mmap when there are no other mm users and locking is unnecessary
Introduce __vm_flags_mod to avoid assertions when the caller takes
responsibility for the required locking.
Pass a hint to untrack_pfn to conditionally use __vm_flags_mod for
flags modification to avoid assertion.

When merging the previous value, set the vma iterator to the previous

Introduce shrink_vma() which uses the vma_prepare() and vma_complete()
functions to reduce the vma coverage.
Convert shift_arg_pages() to use expand_vma() and the new shrink_vma()
function. Remove support from __vma_adjust() to reduce a vma size since
shift_arg_pages() is the only user that shrinks a VMA in this way.

vma_prepare. This is to abstract the locking when adjusting the VMAs.

Splitting can be more efficient when the order is not of concern. Change
do_vmi_align_munmap() to reduce walking of the tree during split
operations.
move_vma() must also be altered to remove the dependency of keeping the
original VMA as the active part of the split. Transition to using vma
iterator to look up the prev and/or next vma after munmap.

The shm already has the vma iterator in position for a write.
do_vmi_munmap() searches for the correct position and aligns the write, so
it is not the right function to use in this case.
The shm VMA tree modification is similar to the brk munmap situation, the
vma iterator is in position and the VMA is already known. This patch
generalizes the brk munmap function do_brk_munmap() to be used for any
other callers with the vma iterator already in position to munmap a VMA.

In preparation of passing the vma state through split, the pre-allocation
that occurs before the split has to be moved to after. Since the
preallocation would then live right next to the store, just call store
instead of preallocating. This effectively restores the potential error
path of splitting and not munmap'ing which pre-dates the maple tree.

Patch series "mm: In-kernel support for memory-deny-write-execute (MDWE)",
v2.
The background to this is that systemd has a configuration option called
MemoryDenyWriteExecute [2], implemented as a SECCOMP BPF filter. Its aim
is to prevent a user task from inadvertently creating an executable
mapping that is (or was) writeable. Since such BPF filter is stateless,
it cannot detect mappings that were previously writeable but subsequently
changed to read-only. Therefore the filter simply rejects any
mprotect(PROT_EXEC). The side-effect is that on arm64 with BTI support
(Branch Target Identification), the dynamic loader cannot change an ELF
section from PROT_EXEC to PROT_EXEC|PROT_BTI using mprotect(). For
libraries, it can resort to unmapping and re-mapping but for the main
executable it does not have a file descriptor. The original bug report in
the Red Hat bugzilla - [3] - and subsequent glibc workaround for libraries
- [4].
This series adds in-kernel support for this feature as a prctl
PR_SET_MDWE, that is inherited on fork(). The prctl denies PROT_WRITE |
PROT_EXEC mappings. Like the systemd BPF filter it also denies adding
PROT_EXEC to mappings. However unlike the BPF filter it only denies it if
the mapping didn't previous have PROT_EXEC. This allows to PROT_EXEC ->
PROT_EXEC | PROT_BTI with mprotect(), which is a problem with the BPF
filter.
This patch (of 2):
The aim of such policy is to prevent a user task from creating an
executable mapping that is also writeable.
An example of mmap() returning -EACCESS if the policy is enabled:
mmap(0, size, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE | PROT_EXEC, flags, 0, 0);
Similarly, mprotect() would return -EACCESS below:

The BPF filter that systemd MDWE uses is stateless, and disallows
mprotect() with PROT_EXEC completely. This new prctl allows PROT_EXEC to
be enabled if it was already PROT_EXEC, which allows the following case:

where PROT_BTI enables branch tracking identification on arm64.

Currently, we don't enable writenotify when enabling userfaultfd-wp on a
shared writable mapping (for now only shmem and hugetlb). The consequence
is that vma->vm_page_prot will still include write permissions, to be set
as default for all PTEs that get remapped (e.g., mprotect(), NUMA hinting,
page migration, ...).
So far, vma->vm_page_prot is assumed to be a safe default, meaning that we
only add permissions (e.g., mkwrite) but not remove permissions (e.g.,
wrprotect). For example, when enabling softdirty tracking, we enable
writenotify. With uffd-wp on shared mappings, that changed. More details
on vma->vm_page_prot semantics were summarized in [1].
This is problematic for uffd-wp: we'd have to manually check for a uffd-wp
PTEs/PMDs and manually write-protect PTEs/PMDs, which is error prone.
Prone to such issues is any code that uses vma->vm_page_prot to set PTE
permissions: primarily pte_modify() and mk_pte().
Instead, let's enable writenotify such that PTEs/PMDs/... will be mapped
write-protected as default and we will only allow selected PTEs that are
definitely safe to be mapped without write-protection (see
can_change_pte_writable()) to be writable. In the future, we might want
to enable write-bit recovery -- e.g., can_change_pte_writable() -- at more
locations, for example, also when removing uffd-wp protection.
This fixes two known cases:
(a) remove_migration_pte() mapping uffd-wp'ed PTEs writable, resulting
in uffd-wp not triggering on write access.
(b) do_numa_page() / do_huge_pmd_numa_page() mapping uffd-wp'ed PTEs/PMDs
writable, resulting in uffd-wp not triggering on write access.
Note that do_numa_page() / do_huge_pmd_numa_page() can be reached even
without NUMA hinting (which currently doesn't seem to be applicable to
shmem), for example, by using uffd-wp with a PROT_WRITE shmem VMA. On
such a VMA, userfaultfd-wp is currently non-functional.
Note that when enabling userfaultfd-wp, there is no need to walk page
tables to enforce the new default protection for the PTEs: we know that
they cannot be uffd-wp'ed yet, because that can only happen after enabling
uffd-wp for the VMA in general.
Also note that this makes mprotect() on ranges with uffd-wp'ed PTEs not
accidentally set the write bit -- which would result in uffd-wp not
triggering on later write access. This commit makes uffd-wp on shmem
behave just like uffd-wp on anonymous memory in that regard, even though,
mixing mprotect with uffd-wp is controversial.

Add more sanity checks to the VMA that do_brk_flags() will expand. Ensure
the VMA matches basic merge requirements within the function before
calling can_vma_merge_after().
Drop the duplicate checks from vm_brk_flags() since they will be enforced
later.
The old code would expand file VMAs on brk(), which is functionally
wrong and also dangerous in terms of locking because the brk() path
isn't designed for file VMAs and therefore doesn't lock the file
mapping. Checking can_vma_merge_after() ensures that new anonymous
VMAs can't be merged into file VMAs.

This reverts commit f35b5d7d67.
It has been reported to cause huge performance regressions on some loads
(will-it-scale.per_process_ops, but also building the kernel with
clang).
The commit did speed up gcc builds by a small amount, so it's not an
unambiguous regression, but until the big regressions are understood,
let's revert it.

Commit 76ae847497 ("Documentation: raise minimum supported version of
GCC to 5.1") updated the minimum gcc version to 5.1. So the problem
mentioned in f02c696800 ("include/linux/memory.h: implement
register_hotmemory_notifier()") no longer exist. So we can now switch to
use hotplug_memory_notifier() directly rather than

The root cause was traced to an error handing path in mmap_region() when
arch_validate_flags() or mas_preallocate() fails. In the shared anonymous
mapping sence, vma will be setuped and mapped with a new shared anonymous
file via shmem_zero_setup(). So in this case, the file resource needs to
be released.
Fix it by calling fput(vma->vm_file) and unmap_region() when
arch_validate_flags() or mas_preallocate() returns an error in the shared
anonymous mapping sence.

When using the VMA iterator, the final execution will set the variable
'next' to NULL which causes the function to fail out. Restore the break
in the loop to exit the VMA iterator early without clearing NULL fixes the
issue.

mmap should return the start address of newly mapped area when successful.
On a successful merge of a VMA, the return address was changed and thus
was violating that expectation from userspace.
This is a restoration of functionality provided by 309d08d9b3
(mm/mmap.c: fix mmap return value when vma is merged after call_mmap()).
For completeness of fixing MAP_FIXED, implement the comments from the
previous discussion to never update the address and fail if the address
changes. Leaving the error as a WARN_ON() to avoid crashing the kernel.

A memory leak in hugetlb_reserve_pages was reported in [1]. The root
cause was traced to an error path in mmap_region when mas_preallocate()
fails. In this case, the vma is freed after a successful call to
filesystem specific mmap. The hugetlbfs mmap routine may allocate data
structures pointed to by m_private_data. These need to be cleaned up by
the hugetlb vm_ops->close() routine.
The same issue was addressed by commit deb0f65628 ("mm/mmap: undo
->mmap() when arch_validate_flags() fails") for the arch_validate_flags()
test. Go to the same close_and_free_vma label if mas_preallocate() fails.

Commit c462ac288f ("mm: Introduce arch_validate_flags()") added a late
check in mmap_region() to let architectures validate vm_flags. The check
needs to happen after calling ->mmap() as the flags can potentially be
modified during this callback.
If arch_validate_flags() check fails we unmap and free the vma. However,
the error path fails to undo the ->mmap() call that previously succeeded
and depending on the specific ->mmap() implementation this translates to
reference increments, memory allocations and other operations what will
not be cleaned up.
There are several places (mainly device drivers) where this is an issue.
However, one specific example is bpf_map_mmap() which keeps count of the
mappings in map->writecnt. The count is incremented on ->mmap() and then
decremented on vm_ops->close(). When arch_validate_flags() fails this
count is off since bpf_map_mmap_close() is never called.
One can reproduce this issue in arm64 devices with MTE support. Here the
vm_flags are checked to only allow VM_MTE if VM_MTE_ALLOWED has been set
previously. From userspace then is enough to pass the PROT_MTE flag to
mmap() syscall to trigger the arch_validate_flags() failure.

If the brk VMA is the last vma in a maple node and meets the rare criteria
that it can be expanded, then preallocation is necessary to avoid a
potential fs_reclaim circular lock issue on low resources.
At the same time use the actual vma start address (unaligned) when calling
vma_adjust_trans_huge().

The anon vma was not unlinked and the file was not closed in the failure
path when the machine runs out of memory during the maple tree
modification. This caused a memory leak of the anon vma chain and vma
since neither would be freed.

I am currently working on my master's thesis trying to increase number of
merges of VMAs currently failing because of page offset incompatibility
and difference in their anon_vmas. The following refactor and added merge
call included in this series is just two smaller upgrades I created along
the way.
This patch (of 2):
Refactor vma_merge() to make it shorter and more understandable. Main
change is the elimination of code duplicity in the case of merge next
check. This is done by first doing checks and caching the results before
executing the merge itself. The variable 'area' is divided into 'mid' and
'res' as previously it was used for two purposes, as the middle VMA
between prev and next and also as the result of the merge itself. Exit
paths are also unified.

The primary reason to invoke the oom reaper from the exit_mmap path used
to be a prevention of an excessive oom killing if the oom victim exit
races with the oom reaper (see [1] for more details). The invocation has
moved around since then because of the interaction with the munlock logic
but the underlying reason has remained the same (see [2]).
Munlock code is no longer a problem since [3] and there shouldn't be any
blocking operation before the memory is unmapped by exit_mmap so the oom
reaper invocation can be dropped. The unmapping part can be done with the
non-exclusive mmap_sem and the exclusive one is only required when page
tables are freed.
Remove the oom_reaper from exit_mmap which will make the code easier to
read. This is really unlikely to make any observable difference although
some microbenchmarks could benefit from one less branch that needs to be
evaluated even though it almost never is true.

__vma_link_file() resolves the mapping from the file, if there is one.
Pass through the mapping and check the vm_file externally since most
places already have the required information and check of vm_file.

Replace any vm_next use with vma_find().
Update free_pgtables(), unmap_vmas(), and zap_page_range() to use the
maple tree.
Use the new free_pgtables() and unmap_vmas() in do_mas_align_munmap(). At
the same time, alter the loop to be more compact.
Now that free_pgtables() and unmap_vmas() take a maple tree as an
argument, rearrange do_mas_align_munmap() to use the new tree to hold the
vmas to remove.
Remove __vma_link_list() and __vma_unlink_list() as they are exclusively
used to update the linked list.
Drop linked list update from __insert_vm_struct().
Rework validation of tree as it was depending on the linked list.

Remove __do_munmap() in favour of do_munmap(), do_mas_munmap(), and
do_mas_align_munmap().
do_munmap() is a wrapper to create a maple state for any callers that have
not been converted to the maple tree.
do_mas_munmap() takes a maple state to mumap a range. This is just a
small function which checks for error conditions and aligns the end of the
range.
do_mas_align_munmap() uses the aligned range to mumap a range.
do_mas_align_munmap() starts with the first VMA in the range, then finds
the last VMA in the range. Both start and end are split if necessary.
Then the VMAs are removed from the linked list and the mm mlock count is
updated at the same time. Followed by a single tree operation of
overwriting the area in with a NULL. Finally, the detached list is
unmapped and freed.
By reorganizing the munmap calls as outlined, it is now possible to avoid
extra work of aligning pre-aligned callers which are known to be safe,
avoid extra VMA lookups or tree walks for modifications.
detach_vmas_to_be_unmapped() is no longer used, so drop this code.
vm_brk_flags() can just call the do_mas_munmap() as it checks for
intersecting VMAs directly.

By using the maple tree and the maple tree state, the vmacache is no
longer beneficial and is complicating the VMA code. Remove the vmacache

Changing mmap_region() to use the maple tree state and the advanced maple
tree interface allows for a lot less tree walking.
This change removes the last caller of munmap_vma_range(), so drop this
unused function.
Add vma_expand() to expand a VMA if possible by doing the necessary
hugepage check, uprobe_munmap of files, dcache flush, modifications then
undoing the detaches, etc.

Avoid allocating a new VMA when it a vma modification can occur. When a
brk() can expand or contract a VMA, then the single store operation will
only modify one index of the maple tree instead of causing a node to split
or coalesce. This avoids unnecessary allocations/frees of maple tree
nodes and VMAs.
Move some limit & flag verifications out of the do_brk_flags() function to
use only relevant checks in the code path of bkr() and vm_brk_flags().
Set the vma to check if it can expand in vm_brk_flags() if extra criteria
are met.
Drop userfaultfd from do_brk_flags() path and only use it in
vm_brk_flags() path since that is the only place a munmap will happen.
Add a wraper for munmap for the brk case called do_brk_munmap().

Only write to the maple tree if we are not inserting or the insert isn't
going to overwrite the area to clear. This avoids spanning writes and
node coealescing when unnecessary.
The change requires a custom search for the linked list addition to find
the correct VMA for the prev link.

commit and was checked against what the rbtree returned, but the actual

Start tracking the VMAs with the new maple tree structure in parallel with
the rb_tree. Add debug and trace events for maple tree operations and
duplicate the rb_tree that is created on forks into the maple tree.
The maple tree is added to the mm_struct including the mm_init struct,
added support in required mm/mmap functions, added tracking in kernel/fork
for process forking, and used to find the unmapped_area and checked
against what the rbtree finds.
This also moves the mmap_lock() in exit_mmap() since the oom reaper call
does walk the VMAs. Otherwise lockdep will be unhappy if oom happens.
When splitting a vma fails due to allocations of the maple tree nodes,
the error path in __split_vma() calls new->vm_ops->close(new). The page
accounting for hugetlb is actually in the close() operation, so it
accounts for the removal of 1/2 of the VMA which was not adjusted. This
results in a negative exit value. To avoid the negative charge, set
vm_start = vm_end and vm_pgoff = 0.
There is also a potential accounting issue in special mappings from
insert_vm_struct() failing to allocate, so reverse the charge there in
the failure scenario.

Align larger anonymous memory mappings on THP boundaries by going through
thp_get_unmapped_area if THPs are enabled for the current process.
With this patch, larger anonymous mappings are now THP aligned. When a
malloc library allocates a 2MB or larger arena, that arena can now be
mapped with THPs right from the start, which can result in better TLB hit
rates and execution time.

Patch series "mm/hugetlb: fix write-fault handling for shared mappings", v2.
I observed that hugetlb does not support/expect write-faults in shared
mappings that would have to map the R/O-mapped page writable -- and I
found two case where we could currently get such faults and would
erroneously map an anon page into a shared mapping.
Reproducers part of the patches.
I propose to backport both fixes to stable trees. The first fix needs a
small adjustment.

Staring at hugetlb_wp(), one might wonder where all the logic for shared
mappings is when stumbling over a write-protected page in a shared
mapping. In fact, there is none, and so far we thought we could get away
with that because e.g., mprotect() should always do the right thing and
map all pages directly writable.
Looks like we were wrong:

Above test fails with SIGBUS when there is only a single free hugetlb page.

And worse, with sufficient free hugetlb pages it will map an anonymous page
into a shared mapping, for example, messing up accounting during unmap
and breaking MAP_SHARED semantics:

Reason in this particular case is that vma_wants_writenotify() will
return "true", removing VM_SHARED in vma_set_page_prot() to map pages
write-protected. Let's teach vma_wants_writenotify() that hugetlb does not
support softdirty tracking.

The check wanted to make sure when soft-dirty tracking is enabled we won't
grant write bit by accident, as a page fault is needed for dirty tracking.
The intention is correct but we didn't check it right because
VM_SOFTDIRTY set actually means soft-dirty tracking disabled. Fix it.
There's another thing tricky about soft-dirty is that, we can't check the
vma flag !(vma_flags & VM_SOFTDIRTY) directly but only check it after we
checked CONFIG_MEM_SOFT_DIRTY because otherwise VM_SOFTDIRTY will be
defined as zero, and !(vma_flags & VM_SOFTDIRTY) will constantly return
true. To avoid misuse, introduce a helper for checking whether vma has
soft-dirty tracking enabled.
We can easily verify this with any exclusive anonymous page, like program
below:

Here we attach a Fixes to commit 64fe24a3e0 only for easy tracking, as
this patch won't apply to a tree before that point. However the commit
wasn't the source of problem, but instead 64e455079e. It's just that

Since the beginning, charged is set to 0 to avoid calling vm_unacct_memory
twice because vm_unacct_memory will be called by above unmap_region. But
since commit 4f74d2c8e8 ("vm: remove 'nr_accounted' calculations from
the unmap_vmas() interfaces"), unmap_region doesn't call vm_unacct_memory
anymore. So charged shouldn't be set to 0 now otherwise the calling to
paired vm_unacct_memory will be missed and leads to imbalanced account.

Now all the platforms enable ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT. They define and
export own vm_get_page_prot() whether custom or standard
DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. Hence there is no need for default generic
fallback for vm_get_page_prot(). Just drop this fallback and also
ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT mechanism.

__SXXX/__PXXX macros are unnecessary abstraction layer in creating the
generic protection_map[] array which is used for vm_get_page_prot(). This
abstraction layer can be avoided, if the platforms just define the array
protection_map[] for all possible vm_flags access permission combinations
and also export vm_get_page_prot() implementation.
This series drops __SXXX/__PXXX macros from across platforms in the tree.
First it build protects generic protection_map[] array with '#ifdef
__P000' and moves it inside platforms which enable
ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. Later this build protects same array with
'#ifdef ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT' and moves inside remaining platforms
while enabling ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. This adds a new macro
DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT defining the current generic vm_get_page_prot(),
in order for it to be reused on platforms that do not require custom
implementation. Finally, ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT can just be dropped,
as all platforms now define and export vm_get_page_prot(), via looking up
a private and static protection_map[] array. protection_map[] data type
has been changed as 'static const' on all platforms that do not change it
during boot.
This patch (of 26):
Build protect generic protection_map[] array with __P000, so that it can
be moved inside all the platforms one after the other. Otherwise there
will be build failures during this process.
CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT cannot be used for this purpose as only
certain platforms enable this config now.

The readonly FS THP relies on khugepaged to collapse THP for suitable
vmas. But the behavior is inconsistent for "always" mode
(https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/00f195d4-d039-3cf2-d3a1-a2c88de397a0@suse.cz/).
The "always" mode means THP allocation should be tried all the time and
khugepaged should try to collapse THP all the time. Of course the
allocation and collapse may fail due to other factors and conditions.
Currently file THP may not be collapsed by khugepaged even though all the
conditions are met. That does break the semantics of "always" mode.
So make sure readonly FS vmas are registered to khugepaged to fix the
break.
Register suitable vmas in common mmap path, that could cover both readonly
FS vmas and shmem vmas, so remove the khugepaged calls in shmem.c.
Still need to keep the khugepaged call in vma_merge() since vma_merge() is
called in a lot of places, for example, madvise, mprotect, etc.

The khugepaged_enter_vma_merge() actually does as the same thing as the
khugepaged_enter() section called by shmem_mmap(), so consolidate them
into one helper and rename it to khugepaged_enter_vma().

Unlike most architectures, powerpc can only define at runtime
if it is going to use the generic arch_get_unmapped_area() or not.
Today, powerpc has a copy of the generic arch_get_unmapped_area()
because when selection HAVE_ARCH_UNMAPPED_AREA the generic
arch_get_unmapped_area() is not available.
Rename it generic_get_unmapped_area() and make it independent of
HAVE_ARCH_UNMAPPED_AREA.
Do the same for arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown() versus
HAVE_ARCH_UNMAPPED_AREA_TOPDOWN.
Do the same for hugetlb_get_unmapped_area() versus
HAVE_ARCH_HUGETLB_UNMAPPED_AREA.

Patch series "mm/mmap: Drop arch_vm_get_page_prot() and arch_filter_pgprot()", v7.
protection_map[] is an array based construct that translates given
vm_flags combination. This array contains page protection map, which is
populated by the platform via [__S000 .. __S111] and [__P000 .. __P111]
exported macros. Primary usage for protection_map[] is for
vm_get_page_prot(), which is used to determine page protection value for a
given vm_flags. vm_get_page_prot() implementation, could again call
platform overrides arch_vm_get_page_prot() and arch_filter_pgprot(). Some
platforms override protection_map[] that was originally built with
__SXXX/__PXXX with different runtime values.
Currently there are multiple layers of abstraction i.e __SXXX/__PXXX
macros , protection_map[], arch_vm_get_page_prot() and
arch_filter_pgprot() built between the platform and generic MM, finally
defining vm_get_page_prot().
Hence this series proposes to drop later two abstraction levels and
instead just move the responsibility of defining vm_get_page_prot() to the
platform (still utilizing generic protection_map[] array) itself making it
clean and simple.
This first introduces ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT which enables the
platforms to define custom vm_get_page_prot(). This starts converting
platforms that define the overrides arch_filter_pgprot() or
arch_vm_get_page_prot() which enables for those constructs to be dropped
off completely.

protection_map[] maps vm_flags access combinations into page protection
value as defined by the platform via __PXXX and __SXXX macros. The array
indices in protection_map[], represents vm_flags access combinations but
it's not very intuitive to derive. This makes it clear and explicit.

This is a fix for commit f6795053da ("mm: mmap: Allow for "high"
userspace addresses") for hugetlb.
This patch adds support for "high" userspace addresses that are
optionally supported on the system and have to be requested via a hint
mechanism ("high" addr parameter to mmap).
Architectures such as powerpc and x86 achieve this by making changes to
their architectural versions of hugetlb_get_unmapped_area() function.
However, arm64 uses the generic version of that function.
So take into account arch_get_mmap_base() and arch_get_mmap_end() in
hugetlb_get_unmapped_area(). To allow that, move those two macros out
of mm/mmap.c into include/linux/sched/mm.h
If these macros are not defined in architectural code then they default
to (TASK_SIZE) and (base) so should not introduce any behavioural
changes to architectures that do not define them.
For the time being, only ARM64 is affected by this change.
Catalin (ARM64) said
"We should have fixed hugetlb_get_unmapped_area() as well when we added
support for 52-bit VA. The reason for commit f6795053da was to
prevent normal mmap() from returning addresses above 48-bit by default
as some user-space had hard assumptions about this.
It's a slight ABI change if you do this for hugetlb_get_unmapped_area()
but I doubt anyone would notice. It's more likely that the current
behaviour would cause issues, so I'd rather have them consistent.
Basically when arm64 gained support for 52-bit addresses we did not
want user-space calling mmap() to suddenly get such high addresses,
otherwise we could have inadvertently broken some programs (similar
behaviour to x86 here). Hence we added commit f6795053da. But we
missed hugetlbfs which could still get such high mmap() addresses. So
in theory that's a potential regression that should have bee addressed
at the same time as commit f6795053da (and before arm64 enabled
52-bit addresses)"

_install_special_mapping() adds the VM_SPECIAL bit VM_DONTEXPAND (and
never attempts to update locked_vm), so it ought to be consistent with
mmap_region() and mlock_fixup(), making sure not to add VM_LOCKED or
VM_LOCKONFAULT. I doubt that this fixes any problem in practice: just
do it for consistency.

__setup() handlers should return 1 if the command line option is handled
and 0 if not (or maybe never return 0; it just pollutes init's
environment). This prevents:

checking for an error.
It appears that having stack_guard_gap == 0 is valid (if unexpected) since
using "stack_guard_gap=0" on the kernel command line does that.

oom reaping (__oom_reap_task_mm) relies on a 2 way synchronization with
exit_mmap. First it relies on the mmap_lock to exclude from unlock
path[1], page tables tear down (free_pgtables) and vma destruction.
This alone is not sufficient because mm->mmap is never reset.
For historical reasons[2] the lock is taken there is also MMF_OOM_SKIP
set for oom victims before.
The oom reaper only ever looks at oom victims so the whole scheme works
properly but process_mrelease can opearate on any task (with fatal
signals pending) which doesn't really imply oom victims. That means
that the MMF_OOM_SKIP part of the synchronization doesn't work and it
can see a task after the whole address space has been demolished and
traverse an already released mm->mmap list. This leads to use after
free as properly caught up by KASAN report.
Fix the issue by reseting mm->mmap so that MMF_OOM_SKIP synchronization
is not needed anymore. The MMF_OOM_SKIP is not removed from exit_mmap
yet but it acts mostly as an optimization now.

munlock_vma_pages_range() will still be required, when munlocking but
not munmapping a set of pages; but when unmapping a pte, the mlock count
will be maintained in much the same way as it will be maintained when
mapping in the pte. Which removes the need for munlock_vma_pages_all()
on mlocked vmas when munmapping or exiting: eliminating the catastrophic
contention on i_mmap_rwsem, and the need for page lock on the pages.
There is still a need to update locked_vm accounting according to the
munmapped vmas when munmapping: do that in detach_vmas_to_be_unmapped().
exit_mmap() does not need locked_vm updates, so delete unlock_range().
And wasn't I the one who forbade the OOM reaper to attack mlocked vmas,
because of the uncertainty in blocking on all those page locks?
No fear of that now, so permit the OOM reaper on mlocked vmas.

Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman:
"This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups
which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found
along the way.
The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals
that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from
complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing
userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops
to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all
architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on
the stack.
Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task
are the big successes for dead code removal this round.
A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues
reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I
simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes
they were fixing.
There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I
dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with
something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some
rebasing.
Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls
to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of
struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the
pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The
flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is
removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with
signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed.
There are several loosely related changes included because I am
cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost.

oom-reaper and process_mrelease system call should protect against races
with exit_mmap which can destroy page tables while they walk the VMA
tree. oom-reaper protects from that race by setting MMF_OOM_VICTIM and
by relying on exit_mmap to set MMF_OOM_SKIP before taking and releasing
mmap_write_lock. process_mrelease has to elevate mm->mm_users to
prevent such race.
Both oom-reaper and process_mrelease hold mmap_read_lock when walking
the VMA tree. The locking rules and mechanisms could be simpler if
exit_mmap takes mmap_write_lock while executing destructive operations
such as free_pgtables.
Change exit_mmap to hold the mmap_write_lock when calling unlock_range,
free_pgtables and remove_vma. Note also that because oom-reaper checks
VM_LOCKED flag, unlock_range() should not be allowed to race with it.
Before this patch, remove_vma used to be called with no locks held,
however with fput being executed asynchronously and vm_ops->close not
being allowed to hold mmap_lock (it is called from __split_vma with
mmap_sem held for write), changing that should be fine.
In most cases this lock should be uncontended. Previously, Kirill
reported ~4% regression caused by a similar change [1]. We reran the
same test and although the individual results are quite noisy, the
percentiles show lower regression with 1.6% being the worst case [2].
The change allows oom-reaper and process_mrelease to execute safely
under mmap_read_lock without worries that exit_mmap might destroy page
tables from under them.

This should not really be part of linux/mm_types.h in the first place,
as that header is meant to only contain structure defintions and need a

in the expensive (compile-speed wise) fortify-string logic.
Move the new functions into a separate header that only needs to be
included in a couple of locations.

In many userspace applications, and especially in VM based applications
like Android uses heavily, there are multiple different allocators in
use. At a minimum there is libc malloc and the stack, and in many cases
there are libc malloc, the stack, direct syscalls to mmap anonymous
memory, and multiple VM heaps (one for small objects, one for big
objects, etc.). Each of these layers usually has its own tools to
inspect its usage; malloc by compiling a debug version, the VM through
heap inspection tools, and for direct syscalls there is usually no way
to track them.
On Android we heavily use a set of tools that use an extended version of
the logic covered in Documentation/vm/pagemap.txt to walk all pages
mapped in userspace and slice their usage by process, shared (COW) vs.
unique mappings, backing, etc. This can account for real physical
memory usage even in cases like fork without exec (which Android uses
heavily to share as many private COW pages as possible between
processes), Kernel SamePage Merging, and clean zero pages. It produces
a measurement of the pages that only exist in that process (USS, for
unique), and a measurement of the physical memory usage of that process
with the cost of shared pages being evenly split between processes that
share them (PSS).
If all anonymous memory is indistinguishable then figuring out the real
physical memory usage (PSS) of each heap requires either a pagemap
walking tool that can understand the heap debugging of every layer, or
for every layer's heap debugging tools to implement the pagemap walking
logic, in which case it is hard to get a consistent view of memory
across the whole system.
Tracking the information in userspace leads to all sorts of problems.
It either needs to be stored inside the process, which means every
process has to have an API to export its current heap information upon
request, or it has to be stored externally in a filesystem that somebody
needs to clean up on crashes. It needs to be readable while the process
is still running, so it has to have some sort of synchronization with
every layer of userspace. Efficiently tracking the ranges requires
reimplementing something like the kernel vma trees, and linking to it
from every layer of userspace. It requires more memory, more syscalls,
more runtime cost, and more complexity to separately track regions that
the kernel is already tracking.
This patch adds a field to /proc/pid/maps and /proc/pid/smaps to show a
userspace-provided name for anonymous vmas. The names of named
anonymous vmas are shown in /proc/pid/maps and /proc/pid/smaps as
[anon:<name>].
Userspace can set the name for a region of memory by calling
prctl(PR_SET_VMA, PR_SET_VMA_ANON_NAME, start, len, (unsigned long)name)
Setting the name to NULL clears it. The name length limit is 80 bytes
including NUL-terminator and is checked to contain only printable ascii
characters (including space), except '[',']','\','$' and '`'.
Ascii strings are being used to have a descriptive identifiers for vmas,
which can be understood by the users reading /proc/pid/maps or
/proc/pid/smaps. Names can be standardized for a given system and they
can include some variable parts such as the name of the allocator or a
library, tid of the thread using it, etc.
The name is stored in a pointer in the shared union in vm_area_struct
that points to a null terminated string. Anonymous vmas with the same
name (equivalent strings) and are otherwise mergeable will be merged.
The name pointers are not shared between vmas even if they contain the
same name. The name pointer is stored in a union with fields that are
only used on file-backed mappings, so it does not increase memory usage.
CONFIG_ANON_VMA_NAME kernel configuration is introduced to enable this
feature. It keeps the feature disabled by default to prevent any
additional memory overhead and to avoid confusing procfs parsers on
systems which are not ready to support named anonymous vmas.
The patch is based on the original patch developed by Colin Cross, more
specifically on its latest version [1] posted upstream by Sumit Semwal.
It used a userspace pointer to store vma names. In that design, name
pointers could be shared between vmas. However during the last
upstreaming attempt, Kees Cook raised concerns [2] about this approach
and suggested to copy the name into kernel memory space, perform
validity checks [3] and store as a string referenced from
vm_area_struct.
One big concern is about fork() performance which would need to strdup
anonymous vma names. Dave Hansen suggested experimenting with
worst-case scenario of forking a process with 64k vmas having longest
possible names [4]. I ran this experiment on an ARM64 Android device
and recorded a worst-case regression of almost 40% when forking such a
process.
This regression is addressed in the followup patch which replaces the
pointer to a name with a refcounted structure that allows sharing the
name pointer between vmas of the same name. Instead of duplicating the
string during fork() or when splitting a vma it increments the refcount.

Changes for prctl(2) manual page (in the options section):
PR_SET_VMA
Sets an attribute specified in arg2 for virtual memory areas
starting from the address specified in arg3 and spanning the
size specified in arg4. arg5 specifies the value of the attribute
to be set. Note that assigning an attribute to a virtual memory
area might prevent it from being merged with adjacent virtual
memory areas due to the difference in that attribute's value.
Currently, arg2 must be one of:
PR_SET_VMA_ANON_NAME
Set a name for anonymous virtual memory areas. arg5 should
be a pointer to a null-terminated string containing the
name. The name length including null byte cannot exceed
80 bytes. If arg5 is NULL, the name of the appropriate
anonymous virtual memory areas will be reset. The name
can contain only printable ascii characters (including
space), except '[',']','\','$' and '`'.
This feature is available only if the kernel is built with
the CONFIG_ANON_VMA_NAME option enabled.

When I say remove I mean remove. All profile_task_exit and
profile_munmap do is call a blocking notifier chain. The helpers
profile_task_register and profile_task_unregister are not called
anywhere in the tree. Which means this is all dead code.
So remove the dead code and make it easier to read do_exit.

Commit 21a3c273f8 ("mm, hugetlb: add thread name and pid to
SHM_HUGETLB mlock rlimit warning") marked this as deprecated in 2012,
but it is not deleted yet.
Mike says he still sees that message in log files on occasion, so maybe we
should preserve this warning.
Also remove hugetlbfs related user_shm_unlock in ipc/shm.c and remove the
user_shm_unlock after out.

"Remove all in-tree usage of MAP_DENYWRITE from the kernel and remove
VM_DENYWRITE.
There are some (minor) user-visible changes:
- We no longer deny write access to shared libaries loaded via legacy
uselib(); this behavior matches modern user space e.g. dlopen().
- We no longer deny write access to the elf interpreter after exec
completed, treating it just like shared libraries (which it often
is).
- We always deny write access to the file linked via /proc/pid/exe:
sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE) will fail if write access to the
file cannot be denied, and write access to the file will remain
denied until the link is effectivel gone (exec, termination,
sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE)) -- just as if exec'ing the file.
Cross-compiled for a bunch of architectures (alpha, microblaze, i386,
s390x, ...) and verified via ltp that especially the relevant tests

find_vma() and variants need protection when used. This patch adds
mmap_assert_lock() calls in the functions.
To make sure the invariant is satisfied, we also need to add a
mmap_read_lock() around the get_user_pages_remote() call in
get_arg_page(). The lock is not strictly necessary because the mm has
been newly created, but the extra cost is limited because the same mutex

Let's also remove masking off MAP_DENYWRITE from ksys_mmap_pgoff():
the last in-tree occurrence of MAP_DENYWRITE is now in LEGACY_MAP_MASK,
which accepts the flag e.g., for MAP_SHARED_VALIDATE; however, the flag
is ignored throughout the kernel now.
Add a comment to LEGACY_MAP_MASK stating that MAP_DENYWRITE is ignored.

We added CONFIG_MANDATORY_FILE_LOCKING in 2015, and soon after turned it
off in Fedora and RHEL8. Several other distros have followed suit.
I've heard of one problem in all that time: Someone migrated from an
older distro that supported "-o mand" to one that didn't, and the host
had a fstab entry with "mand" in it which broke on reboot. They didn't
actually _use_ mandatory locking so they just removed the mount option
and moved on.
This patch rips out mandatory locking support wholesale from the kernel,
along with the Kconfig option and the Documentation file. It also
changes the mount code to ignore the "mand" mount option instead of
erroring out, and to throw a big, ugly warning.

Patch series "mm: introduce memfd_secret system call to create "secret" memory areas", v20.
This is an implementation of "secret" mappings backed by a file
descriptor.
The file descriptor backing secret memory mappings is created using a
dedicated memfd_secret system call The desired protection mode for the
memory is configured using flags parameter of the system call. The mmap()
of the file descriptor created with memfd_secret() will create a "secret"
memory mapping. The pages in that mapping will be marked as not present
in the direct map and will be present only in the page table of the owning
mm.
Although normally Linux userspace mappings are protected from other users,
such secret mappings are useful for environments where a hostile tenant is
trying to trick the kernel into giving them access to other tenants
mappings.
It's designed to provide the following protections:
* Enhanced protection (in conjunction with all the other in-kernel
attack prevention systems) against ROP attacks. Seceretmem makes
"simple" ROP insufficient to perform exfiltration, which increases the
required complexity of the attack. Along with other protections like
the kernel stack size limit and address space layout randomization which
make finding gadgets is really hard, absence of any in-kernel primitive
for accessing secret memory means the one gadget ROP attack can't work.
Since the only way to access secret memory is to reconstruct the missing
mapping entry, the attacker has to recover the physical page and insert
a PTE pointing to it in the kernel and then retrieve the contents. That
takes at least three gadgets which is a level of difficulty beyond most
standard attacks.
* Prevent cross-process secret userspace memory exposures. Once the
secret memory is allocated, the user can't accidentally pass it into the
kernel to be transmitted somewhere. The secreremem pages cannot be
accessed via the direct map and they are disallowed in GUP.
* Harden against exploited kernel flaws. In order to access secretmem,
a kernel-side attack would need to either walk the page tables and
create new ones, or spawn a new privileged uiserspace process to perform
secrets exfiltration using ptrace.
In the future the secret mappings may be used as a mean to protect guest
memory in a virtual machine host.
For demonstration of secret memory usage we've created a userspace library

that does two things: the first is act as a preloader for openssl to
redirect all the OPENSSL_malloc calls to secret memory meaning any secret
keys get automatically protected this way and the other thing it does is
expose the API to the user who needs it. We anticipate that a lot of the
use cases would be like the openssl one: many toolkits that deal with
secret keys already have special handling for the memory to try to give
them greater protection, so this would simply be pluggable into the
toolkits without any need for user application modification.
Hiding secret memory mappings behind an anonymous file allows usage of the
page cache for tracking pages allocated for the "secret" mappings as well
as using address_space_operations for e.g. page migration callbacks.
The anonymous file may be also used implicitly, like hugetlb files, to
implement mmap(MAP_SECRET) and use the secret memory areas with "native"
mm ABIs in the future.
Removing of the pages from the direct map may cause its fragmentation on
architectures that use large pages to map the physical memory which
affects the system performance. However, the original Kconfig text for
CONFIG_DIRECT_GBPAGES said that gigabyte pages in the direct map "... can
improve the kernel's performance a tiny bit ..." (commit 00d1c5e057
("x86: add gbpages switches")) and the recent report [1] showed that "...
although 1G mappings are a good default choice, there is no compelling
evidence that it must be the only choice". Hence, it is sufficient to
have secretmem disabled by default with the ability of a system
administrator to enable it at boot time.
In addition, there is also a long term goal to improve management of the
direct map.

Logic of find_vma_intersection() is repeated in __do_munmap().
Also, prev is assigned a value before checking vma->vm_start >= end which
might end up on a return statement making that assignment useless.
Calling find_vma_intersection() checks that condition and returns NULL if
no vma is found, hence only the !vma check is needed in __do_munmap().
