get_event_name uses sprintf to fill a buffer declared on the stack. It fills
the buffer 2 bytes at a time. What the code doesn't take into account is that
sprintf(buf, "%02x", data) actually writes 3 bytes. 2 bytes for the data and
then it nul terminates the string. Since we declare buf to be 40 characters
long and then we write 40 bytes of data into buf sprintf is going to write 41
characters. The fix is to leave room in buf for the nul terminator.

Martin Knoblauch reports that trying to build 2.6.30-rc6-git3 with
RHEL4.3 userspace (gcc (GCC) 3.4.5 20051201 (Red Hat 3.4.5-2)) causes an
internal compiler error (ICE):
drivers/char/random.c: In function `get_random_int':
drivers/char/random.c:1672: error: unrecognizable insn:
(insn 202 148 150 0 /scratch/build/linux-2.6.30-rc6-git3/arch/x86/include/asm/tsc.h:23 (set (reg:SI 0 ax [91])

(const_int -4 [0xfffffffffffffffc])) 0)) -1 (nil)
(nil))
drivers/char/random.c:1672: internal compiler error: in extract_insn, at recog.c:2083
and after some debugging it turns out that it's due to the code trying
to figure out the rough value of the current stack pointer by taking an
address of an uninitialized variable and casting that to an integer.
This is clearly a compiler bug, but it's not worth fighting - while the
current stack kernel pointer might be somewhat hard to predict in user
space, it's also not generally going to change for a lot of the call
chains for a particular process.
So just drop it, and mumble some incoherent curses at the compiler.

Commit 79e539453b introduced a
regression where you cannot use sysrq 'g' to enter kgdb. The solution
is to move the intel fb sysrq over to V for video instead of G for
graphics. The SMP VOYAGER code to register for the sysrq-v is not
anywhere to be found in the mainline kernel, so the comments in the
code were cleaned up as well.
This patch also cleans up the sysrq definitions for kgdb to make it
generic for the kernel debugger, such that the sysrq 'g' can be used
in the future to enter a gdbstub or another kernel debugger.

It's a really simple patch that basically just open-codes the current
"secure_ip_id()" call, but when open-coding it we now use a _static_
hashing area, so that it gets updated every time.
And to make sure somebody can't just start from the same original seed of
all-zeroes, and then do the "half_md4_transform()" over and over until
they get the same sequence as the kernel has, each iteration also mixes in
the same old "current->pid + jiffies" we used - so we should now have a
regular strong pseudo-number generator, but we also have one that doesn't
have a single seed.
Note: the "pid + jiffies" is just meant to be a tiny tiny bit of noise. It
has no real meaning. It could be anything. I just picked the previous
seed, it's just that now we keep the state in between calls and that will
feed into the next result, and that should make all the difference.
I made that hash be a per-cpu data just to avoid cache-line ping-pong:
having multiple CPU's write to the same data would be fine for randomness,
and add yet another layer of chaos to it, but since get_random_int() is
supposed to be a fast interface I did it that way instead. I considered
using "__raw_get_cpu_var()" to avoid any preemption overhead while still
getting the hash be _mostly_ ping-pong free, but in the end good taste won
out.

Now that the filesystem freeze operation has been elevated to the VFS, and
is just an ioctl away, some sort of safety net for unintentionally frozen
root filesystems may be in order.
The timeout thaw originally proposed did not get merged, but perhaps
something like this would be useful in emergencies.
For example, freeze /path/to/mountpoint may freeze your root filesystem if
you forgot that you had that unmounted.
I chose 'j' as the last remaining character other than 'h' which is sort
of reserved for help (because help is generated on any unknown character).
I've tested this on a non-root fs with multiple (nested) freezers, as well
as on a system rendered unresponsive due to a frozen root fs.

Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.
We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.
But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.
->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.
rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.
Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.
So, let's nuke it.
Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight.

During bootup performance tracing I noticed many occurrences of
vca* device creation and removal, leading to the usual userspace
uevent processing, which are, in this case, rather pointless.
A simple test showing the kernel timing (not including all the
work userspace has to do), gives us these numbers:
$ time for i in `seq 1000`; do echo a > /dev/tty2; done
real 0m1.142s
user 0m0.015s
sys 0m0.540s
If we move the hook for the vcs* driver core devices from the
tty "binding" to the vc allocation/deallocation, which is what
the vcs* devices represent, we get the following numbers:
$ time for i in `seq 1000`; do echo a > /dev/tty2; done
real 0m0.152s
user 0m0.030s
sys 0m0.072s

"Lots of device drivers register a 'struct device_driver' with
the '.bus' member set to '&platform_bus_type'. This is wrong,
since the platform_bus functions expect the 'struct device_driver'
to be wrapped up in a 'struct platform_driver' which provides
some additional callbacks (like suspend_late, resume_early).
The effect may be that platform_suspend_late() uses bogus data
outside the device_driver struct as a pointer pointer to the
device driver's suspend_late() function or other hard to
reproduce failures."(Lothar Wassmann)

Most fasync implementations do something like:
return fasync_helper(...);
But fasync_helper() will return a positive value at times - a feature used
in at least one place. Thus, a number of other drivers do:
err = fasync_helper(...);
if (err < 0)
return err;
return 0;
In the interests of consistency and more concise code, it makes sense to
map positive return values onto zero where ->fasync() is called.

The hvcs and hvsi backends both set tty->low_latency to one, along
with more or less scary comments regarding bugs or races that would
happen if not doing so.
However, they also both call tty_flip_buffer_push() in conexts where
it's illegal to do so since some recent tty changes (or at least it
may have been illegal always but it nows blows) when low_latency is
set (ie, hard interrupt or with spinlock held and irqs disabled).
This removes the setting for now to get them back to working condition,
we'll have to address the races described in the comments separately
if they are still an issue (some of this might have been fixed already).

Some hardware platforms, the TS-7800[1] is one for example, can
supply the kernel with an entropy source, albeit a slow one for
TS-7800 users, by just reading a particular IO address. This
source must not be read above a certain rate otherwise the quality
suffers.
The driver is then hooked into by calling
platform_device_(register|add|del) passing a structure similar to:
------
static struct timeriomem_rng_data ts78xx_ts_rng_data = {
.address = (u32 *__iomem) TS_RNG,
.period = 1000000, /* one second */
};
static struct platform_device ts78xx_ts_rng_device = {
.name = "timeriomem_rng",
.id = -1,
.dev = {
.platform_data = &ts78xx_ts_rng_data,
},
.num_resources = 0,
};

Fix an off-by-two memory error in console selection.
The loop below goes from sel_start to sel_end (inclusive), so it writes
one more character. This one more character was added to the allocated
size (+1), but it was not multiplied by an UTF-8 multiplier.
This patch fixes a memory corruption when UTF-8 console is used and the
user selects a few characters, all of them 3-byte in UTF-8 (for example
a frame line).
When memory redzones are enabled, a redzone corruption is reported.
When they are not enabled, trashing of random memory occurs.

This patch removes the tty->low_latency setting.
For irq based hvc_console backends the tty->low_latency must be set to 0,
because the tty_flip_buffer_push() function must not be called from IRQ context
(see drivers/char/tty_buffer.c).
For polled backends, the low_latency setting causes the bug trace below, because
tty_flip_buffer_push() is called within an atomic context and subsequent calls
might sleep due to mutex_lock.

This patch introduces special handling of the IUCV HVC console device.
If the first IUCV HVC terminal is used as (preferred) Linux console, and
needs some special handling for hangup.
The hvc_iucv_private structure contains a flag to indicate whether a IUCV
HVC device is used as a console.
A terminal acting as "console" behaves different if a tty hangup occurs:
If the iucv communication path is severed, a tty hangup is not
triggered (because the HVC layer does not notify its back-end in that case).
Instead, the console session is left unchanged and the IUCV HVC device is
reset to allow re-connects.
Note: Any output between the disconnect and a re-connect is discarded.

As a non-atomic value, it's only safe to look at entropy_count when the
pool lock is held, so we move the BUG_ON inside the lock for correctness.
Also remove the spurious comment. It's ok for entropy_count to
temporarily exceed POOLBITS so long as it's left in a consistent state
when the lock is released.
This is a more correct, simple, and idiomatic fix for the bug in
8b76f46a2d. I've left the reorderings introduced by that patch in place
as they're harmless, even though they don't properly deal with potential

The N_TTY ldisc layer does not send SIGIO POLL_OUTs correctly when output is
possible due to flawed handling of the TTY_DO_WRITE_WAKEUP bit. It will
either send no SIGIOs at all or on every tty wakeup.
The fix is to set the bit when the tty driver write would block and test
and clear it on write wakeup.

This patch causes "bell" (^G) characters (invoked when the input buffer
is full) to be immediately output rather than filling the echo buffer.
This is especially a problem when the tty is stopped and buffers fill, since
the bells do not serve their purpose of immediate notification that the
buffer cannot take further input, and they will flush all at once when the
tty is restarted.

Fix the handling of input characters when the tty buffer is full or nearly
full. This includes tests that are done in n_tty_receive_char() and handling
of PARMRK.
Problems with the buffer-full tests done in receive_char() caused characters to
be lost at times when the buffer(s) filled. Also, these full conditions
would often only be detected with echo on, and PARMRK was not accounted for
properly in all cases. One symptom of these problems, in addition to lost
characters, was early termination from unix commands like tr and cat when
^Q was used to break from a stopped tty with full buffers (note that breaking
out was often previously not possible, due to the pty getting in "gridlock",
which will be addressed in another patch). Note space is always reserved
at the end of the buffer for a newline (or EOF/EOL) in canonical mode.

Fixes the loss of echoed (and other ldisc-generated characters) when
the tty is stopped or when the driver output buffer is full (happens
frequently for input during continuous program output, such as ^C)
and removes the Big Kernel Lock from the N_TTY line discipline.
Adds an "echo buffer" to the N_TTY line discipline that handles all
ldisc-generated output (including echoed characters). Along with the
loss of characters, this also fixes the associated loss of sync between
tty output and the ldisc state when characters cannot be immediately
written to the tty driver.
The echo buffer stores (in addition to characters) state operations that need
to be done at the time of character output (like management of the column
position). This allows echo to cooperate correctly with program output,
since the ldisc state remains consistent with actual characters written.
Since the echo buffer code now isolates the tty column state code
to the process_out* and process_echoes functions, we can remove the
Big Kernel Lock (BKL) and replace it with mutex locks.
Highlights are:
* Handles echo (and other ldisc output) when tty driver buffer is full
- continuous program output can block echo
* Saves echo when tty is in stopped state (e.g. ^S)
- (e.g.: ^Q will correctly cause held characters to be released for output)
* Control character pairs (e.g. "^C") are treated atomically and not
split up by interleaved program output
* Line discipline state is kept consistent with characters sent to
the tty driver
* Remove the big kernel lock (BKL) from N_TTY line discipline

This patch introduces a new hypervisor console (HVC) back-end that provides
terminal access over the z/VM inter-user communication vehicle (IUCV).
The z/VM IUCV communication is independent of the regular tcp/ip network
and allows access even if there is no network connection between two
z/VM guest virtual machines.
The z/VM IUCV hypervisor console back-end helps the user to access a
z/VM guest virtual machine that lacks of network connectivity; and thus,
provides a "full-screen" terminal alternative to 3215/3270 terminal sessions.
Use the hvc_iucv=[0..8] kernel boot parameter to specify the number of
HVC terminals using a z/VM IUCV back-end.
A recent version of the s390-tools package is required to establish a
terminal connection to a z/VM IUCV hypervisor console back-end.

The ctrl-o (^O) is a common control key used by several applications,
such as vim, but hvc_console uses ^O as the magic-sysrq key. This
commit allows users to send ^O to applications by pressing ^O twice
in succession.
To implement this, this commit introduces a check if ^O is pressed
again if the sysrq_pressed variable is already set. In this case,
clear sysrq_pressed state and flip the ^O character to the tty. (The
old behavior has always set "sysrq_pressed" if ^O has been entered,
and it has not flipped the ^O character to the tty.)

For the console, there is a 1:1 mapping of glyphs which cannot be found
in the current font. This seems to be meant as a kind of 'emergency
fallback' for fonts without unicode mapping which otherwise would
display nothing readable on the screen.
At the moment it affects all chars for which no substitution character
is defined. In particular this means that for all chars (>= 128) where
there is no iso88591-1/unicode character (e.g. control character area)
you'll get the very strange 1:1 mapping of the (cp437) graphics card
glyphs.
I'm pretty sure that the 1:1 mapping should only affect strict ASCII
code characters, i.e. chars < 128.
The patch limits the mapping as it probably was meant anyway.

There is a major bug in the cp437 to unicode translation table. Char
0x7c is mapped to U+00a5 which is the Yen sign and wrong. The right
mapping is U+00a6 (broken bar).
Furthermore, a mapping for U+00b4 (a widely used character) is missing
even though easily possible.
The patch fixes these, as well as it provides a few other useful
mappings.
The changes are as follows:
0x0f (enhancement) enables a sort of currency symbol
0x27 (bug) enables a sort of acute accent which is a widely used character
0x44 (enhancement) enables a sort of icelandic capital letter eth
0x7c (major bug) corrects mapping

AUDIT_TTY records currently log all data read by processes marked for
TTY input auditing, even if the data was "pushed back" using the TIOCSTI
ioctl, not typed by the user.
This patch records all TIOCSTI calls to disambiguate the input. It
generates one audit message per character pushed back; considering
TIOCSTI is used very rarely, this simple solution is probably good
enough. (The only program I could find that uses TIOCSTI is mailx/nail
in "header editing" mode, e.g. using the ~h escape. mailx is used very
rarely, and the escapes are used even rarer.)

Implement the core kernel bits of Performance Counters subsystem.
The Linux Performance Counter subsystem provides an abstraction of
performance counter hardware capabilities. It provides per task and per
CPU counters, and it provides event capabilities on top of those.
Performance counters are accessed via special file descriptors.
There's one file descriptor per virtual counter used.
The special file descriptor is opened via the perf_counter_open()
system call:
int
perf_counter_open(u32 hw_event_type,
u32 hw_event_period,
u32 record_type,
pid_t pid,
int cpu);
The syscall returns the new fd. The fd can be used via the normal
VFS system calls: read() can be used to read the counter, fcntl()
can be used to set the blocking mode, etc.
Multiple counters can be kept open at a time, and the counters
can be poll()ed.
See more details in Documentation/perf-counters.txt.

Impact: new feature
Problem on distro kernels: irq_desc[NR_IRQS] takes megabytes of RAM with
NR_CPUS set to large values. The goal is to be able to scale up to much
larger NR_IRQS value without impacting the (important) common case.
To solve this, we generalize irq_desc[NR_IRQS] to an (optional) array of
irq_desc pointers.
When CONFIG_SPARSE_IRQ=y is used, we use kzalloc_node to get irq_desc,
this also makes the IRQ descriptors NUMA-local (to the site that calls
request_irq()).
This gets rid of the irq_cfg[] static array on x86 as well: irq_cfg now
uses desc->chip_data for x86 to store irq_cfg.

This adds support for multiple BSR nodes in the OF device tree.
Previously, the BSR driver only supported a single OF node describing
a BSR. Apparently when an LPAR is set to use "all system resources"
the BSR appears as a single node, but when it is handed out in pieces,
each 8 byte piece gets its own node. So, this keeps a list of BSR
devices instead of the array and includes all nodes.
Also, this makes the code be more inclusive of what BSR devices we
accept by only checking compatibility and not the device name property
(which might change in the future versions of BSR).

This adds a new backend for the hvc console based on the low-level
udbg callbacks. This effectively implements a working runtime console
in terms of the simple udbg primitives. This is kind of a hack -
since udbg isn't something you really want to be using routinely - but
it's really useful during bringup.
This can be used to quickly implement a userspace-usable console while
you're working on a proper driver for whatever console I/O device the
hardware has. Or, it can be used to avoid writing a full blown
tty/console driver entirely for quick-and-dirty I/O hardware that will
later be replaced by something else.

The patch provides the hvc_resize() function to update the terminal
window dimensions (struct winsize) for a specified hvc console.
The function stores the new window size and schedules a function
that finally updates the tty winsize and signals the change to
user space (SIGWINCH).
Because the winsize update must acquire a mutex and might sleep,
the function is scheduled instead of being called from hvc_poll()
or khvcd.

If put_char() routine of a hvc console backend returns 0, then the
hvc console starts looping in the following scenarios:
1. hvc_console_print()
If put_char() returns 0 then the while loop may loop forever.
I have added the missing check for 0 to throw away console messages.
2. khvcd may loop:
The thread calls hvc_poll() --> hvc_push()... if there are still
buffered data then the HVC_POLL_WRITE bit is set and causes the
khvcd thread to loop (if yield() returns immediately).
However, instead of looping, the khvcd thread could sleep for
MIN_TIMEOUT (doing the same as for get_chars()).
The MIN_TIMEOUT is set if hvc_push() was not able to write
data to the backend. If data has been written, the timeout is
set to 0 to immediately re-schedule hvc_poll().

After a tty hangup() or close() operation, processes might not reset the
termio settings to a sane state. In order to reset the termios to its
default settings the tty driver flag TTY_DRIVER_RESET_TERMIOS has been added.
TTY driver flag description from include/linux/tty_driver.h:
TTY_DRIVER_RESET_TERMIOS --- requests the tty layer to reset the
termios setting when the last process has closed the device.
Used for PTY's, in particular.

This merges branches irq/genirq, irq/sparseirq-v4, timers/hpet-percpu
and x86/uv.
The sparseirq branch is just preliminary groundwork: no sparse IRQs are
actually implemented by this tree anymore - just the new APIs are added
while keeping the old way intact as well (the new APIs map 1:1 to
irq_desc[]). The 'real' sparse IRQ support will then be a relatively
small patch ontop of this - with a v2.6.29 merge target.

Patch tpm-correct-tpm-timeouts-to-jiffies-conversion reveals a bug in the
Broadcom BCM0102 TPM chipset used in the Dell Latitude D820 - although
most of the timeouts are returned in usecs as per the spec, one is
apparently returned in msecs, which results in a too-small value leading
to a timeout when the code treats it as usecs. To prevent a regression,
we check for the known too-short value and adjust it to a value that makes
things work.

This patch fixes timeouts conversion to jiffies, by replacing
msecs_to_jiffies() calls with usecs_to_jiffies(). According to TCG TPM
Specification Version 1.2 Revision 103 (pages 166, 167) TPM timeouts and
durations are returned in microseconds (usec) not in miliseconds (msec).
This fixes a long hang while loading TPM driver, if TPM chip starts in
"Idle" state instead of "Ready" state. Without this patch - 'modprobe'
may hang for 30 seconds or more.

HPET_RTC_IRQ is no longer needed; HPET_EMULATE_RTC suffices and is more
correct. (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11111)
Note that when using the legacy RTC driver, platforms don't really do a
dynamic switch between HPET and non-HPET modes based on whether HPET
hardware actually exists ... only rtc-cmos (using the new RTC framework)
currently switches that way.
So this reflects bitrot in that legacy code, for x86/ia64: kernels with
HPET support configured (e.g. for a clocksource) can't get IRQs from the
legacy RTC driver unless they really have HPET hardware. (The obvious
workaround is to not use the legacy RTC driver on those platforms when you
configure HPET ... unless you know the target really has a HPET.)

On the GM45, the amount of stolen memory mapped to the GTT was underestimated,
even though we had 508KB more available since the GTT doesn't take from
stolen memory. On the non-GM45 G4X, we overestimated how much stolen was
mapped to the GTT by 4KB, resulting in GPU page faults when that page was

Author: Christian Borntraeger <borntraeger@de.ibm.com>
hvc_console: rework setup to replace irq functions with callbacks
introduced a spinlock recursion problem. The notifier_del is
called with a lock held, and in turns calls free_irq which then
complains when manipulating procfs. This fixes it by moving the
call to the notifier to outside of the locked section.
