8212f8986d kbuild: use more subdir- for visiting subdirectories while cleaning
Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for
cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement.

Since commit d92cc4d516 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have
arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for
all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j)
for "make clean".

I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep"
target no longer exists.

fa1e160b08 ia64: remove generated/nr-irqs.h generation to fix build warning
Randy reports the following warning when building ARCH=ia64 with
CONFIG_IA64_PALINFO=m:

../scripts/Makefile.build:68: 'arch/ia64/kernel/palinfo.ko' will not be built even though obj-m is specified.
../scripts/Makefile.build:69: You cannot use subdir-y/m to visit a module Makefile. Use obj-y/m instead.

This message is actually false-positive, and you can get palinfo.ko
correctly built. It is emitted in the archprepare stage, where Kbuild
descends into arch/ia64/kernel to generate include/generated/nr-irqs.h
instead of any kind of kernel objects.

arch/ia64/kernel/nr-irqs.c was introduced by commit 213060a4d6
("[IA64] pvops: paravirtualize NR_IRQS") to pre-calculate:

   NR_IRQS = max(IA64_NATIVE_NR_IRQS, XEN_NR_IRQS, FOO_NR_IRQS...)

Since commit d52eefb47d ("ia64/xen: Remove Xen support for ia64"), this
union contains just one field, making NR_IRQS and IA64_NATIVE_NR_IRQS
always match.

So, the following hard-coding now works:

  #define NR_IRQS                IA64_NATIVE_NR_IRQS

If you need to re-introduce NR_IRQS = max(...) gimmick in the future,
please try to implement it in asm-offsets.c instead of a separate file.
It will be possible because the header inclusion has been consolidated
to make asm-offsets.c independent of <asm/irqs.h>.

d8d2d38275 kbuild: remove PYTHON variable
Python retired in 2020, and some distributions do not provide the
'python' command any more.

As in commit 51839e29cb ("scripts: switch explicitly to Python 3"),
we need to use more specific 'python3' to invoke scripts even if they
are written in a way compatible with both Python 2 and 3.

This commit removes the variable 'PYTHON', and switches the existing
users to 'PYTHON3'.

BTW, PEP 394 (https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0394/) is a helpful
material.

596b0474d3 kbuild: preprocess module linker script
There was a request to preprocess the module linker script like we
do for the vmlinux one. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/8/21/512)

The difference between vmlinux.lds and module.lds is that the latter
is needed for external module builds, thus must be cleaned up by
'make mrproper' instead of 'make clean'. Also, it must be created
by 'make modules_prepare'.

You cannot put it in arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/, which is cleaned up by
'make clean'. I moved arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/module.lds to
arch/$(SRCARCH)/include/asm/module.lds.h, which is included from
scripts/module.lds.S.

scripts/module.lds is fine because 'make clean' keeps all the
build artifacts under scripts/.

You can add arch-specific sections in <asm/module.lds.h>.

e4a42c82e9 kbuild: fix broken builds because of GZIP,BZIP2,LZOP variables
Redefine GZIP, BZIP2, LZOP variables as KGZIP, KBZIP2, KLZOP resp.
GZIP, BZIP2, LZOP env variables are reserved by the tools. The original
attempt to redefine them internally doesn't work in makefiles/scripts
intercall scenarios, e.g., "make GZIP=gzip bindeb-pkg" and results in
broken builds. There can be other broken build commands because of this,
so the universal solution is to use non-reserved env variables for the
compression tools.

8dfb61dcba kbuild: add variables for compression tools
Allow user to use alternative implementations of compression tools,
such as pigz, pbzip2, pxz. For example, multi-threaded tools to
speed up the build:
$ make GZIP=pigz BZIP2=pbzip2

Variables _GZIP, _BZIP2, _LZOP are used internally because original env
vars are reserved by the tools. The use of GZIP in gzip tool is obsolete
since 2015. However, alternative implementations (e.g., pigz) still rely
on it. BZIP2, BZIP, LZOP vars are not obsolescent.

The credit goes to @grsecurity.

As a sidenote, for multi-threaded lzma, xz compression one can use:
$ export XZ_OPT="--threads=0"

df41017eaf ia64: remove support for machvecs
The only thing remaining of the machvecs is a few checks if we are
running on an SGI UV system. Replace those with the existing
is_uv_system() check that has been rewritten to simply check the

That leaves us with a generic kernel that is as fast as the previous

974f83ec1e ia64: rework iommu probing
ia64 currently organizes the iommu probing along machves, which isn't
very helpful. Instead just try to probe for Intel IOMMUs in mem_init
as they are properly described in ACPI and if none was found initialize
the swiotlb buffer. The HP SBA handling is then only done delayed when
the actual hardware is probed. Only in the case that we actually found
usable IOMMUs we then set up the DMA ops and free the not needed
swiotlb buffer. This scheme gets rid of the need for the dma_init
machvec operation, and the dig_vtd machvec.

The SGI SN2 (early Altix) is a very non-standard IA64 platform that was
at the very high end of even IA64 hardware, and has been discontinued
a long time ago. Remove it because there no upstream users left, and it
has magic hooks all over the kernel.

System call table generation script must be run to gener-

This patch will generate unistd_64.h and syscall_table.h
files by the syscall table generation script invoked by
ia64/Makefile and the generated files against the removed

The generated uapi header file will be included in uapi/-

1f2f01b122 kbuild: add machine size to CHECKFLAGS
By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64
and 32bit when compiled on anything else.

This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like
issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or
worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings.

Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT,
to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs).
Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles.

0500871f21 Construct init thread stack in the linker script rather than by union
Construct the init thread stack in the linker script rather than doing it
by means of a union so that ia64's init_task.c can be got rid of.

The following symbols are then made available from INIT_TASK_DATA() linker
script macro:

	init_thread_union
	init_stack

INIT_TASK_DATA() also expands the region to THREAD_SIZE to accommodate the
size of the init stack. init_thread_union is given its own section so that
it can be placed into the stack space in the right order. I'm assuming
that the ia64 ordering is correct and that the task_struct is first and the
thread_info second.

011bf12547 kbuild: allow to override Python command name
The specification of Python 3 is largely different from that of
Python 2.

For example, arch/ia64/scripts/unwcheck.py seems to be written
in Python 2, not compatible with Python 3.

It is not a good idea to invoke python scripts with the hard-coded
command name 'python'. The command 'python' could possibly be
Python 3 on some systems.
For that case, it is reasonable to allow to override the command name
by giving 'PYTHON=python2' from the command line.

The 'python' in arch/ia64/Makefile should be replaced with '$(PYTHON)'.

Note: Previously we had a MODFLAGS variable for both

bf2a4c7270 arch/ia64/Makefile: Remove -mtune=merced in IA64 kernel build
Between GCC version 3.4.0 and 4.3.3 (including 3.4.0 and 4.3.3), -mtune=merced
is implemented in GCC. Starting from 4.4.0, -mtune=merced is deprecated.

Even implemented in versions between 3.4.0 and 4.3.3, the -mtune=merced
feature has been broken in some of the versions. For example, GCC 4.1.2 reports
interanl tuning function errors during kernel building with -mtune=merced. Or
GCC Bugzilla 16130 reports another -mtune=merced issue on GCC 3.4.1.

So I would remove the -mtune=merced from IA64 kernel build. Without this option,
kernel on Merced will remain the same except losing an unstable and out-of-date
performance tunning feature.

Since GCC version 3.4.0, -mtune=mckinley has been implemented. The
-mtune=mckinley option functions the same as mtune=itanium2. And mtune=itanium2
is the default option. So we don't need to add mtune=mckinley either since its
been the default option in any GCC version which implements this option.

4f1933620f kbuild: change kbuild to not rely on incorrect GNU make behavior
The kbuild system takes advantage of an incorrect behavior in GNU make.
Once this behavior is fixed, all files in the kernel rebuild every time,

the incorrect and correct behaviors of GNU make.

For more details on the incorrect behavior, see:

Changes in this patch:
  - Keep all targets that are to be marked .PHONY in a variable, PHONY.
