@subbuf is an output parameter of xdr_buf_subsegment(). A survey of
call sites shows that @subbuf is always uninitialized before
xdr_buf_segment() is invoked by callers.
There are some execution paths through xdr_buf_subsegment() that do
not set all of the fields in @subbuf, leaving some pointer fields
containing garbage addresses. Subsequent processing of that buffer
then results in a page fault.

The RPC client currently doesn't handle ERR_CHUNK replies correctly.
rpcrdma_complete_rqst() incorrectly passes a negative number to
xprt_complete_rqst() as the number of bytes copied. Instead, set
task->tk_status to the error value, and return zero bytes copied.
In these cases, return -EIO rather than -EREMOTEIO. The RPC client's
finite state machine doesn't know what to do with -EREMOTEIO.
Additional clean ups:
- Don't double-count RDMA_ERROR replies
- Remove a stale comment

Clean up: Sometimes creating a fresh rpcrdma_ep can fail. That's why
xprt_rdma_connect() always checks if the r_xprt->rx_ep pointer is
valid before dereferencing it. Instead, xprt_rdma_connect() can
simply check rpcrdma_xprt_connect()'s return value.
Also, there's no need to set re_connect_status to zero just after
the rpcrdma_ep is created, since it is allocated with kzalloc.

r_xprt->rx_ep is known to be good while the transport's send lock is
held. Otherwise additional references on rx_ep must be held when it
is used outside of that lock's critical sections.
For now, bump the rx_ep reference count once whenever there is at
least one outstanding Receive WR. This avoids the memory bandwidth
overhead of taking and releasing the reference count for every
ib_post_recv() and Receive completion.

Avoid unnecessary cache sloshing by placing the buffer size
estimation update logic behind an atomic bit flag.
The size of GSS information included in each wrapped Reply does
not change during the lifetime of a GSS context. Therefore, the
au_rslack and au_ralign fields need to be updated only once after
establishing a fresh GSS credential.
Thus a slack size update must occur after a cred is created,
duplicated, renewed, or expires. I'm not sure I have this exactly
right. A trace point is introduced to track updates to these
variables to enable troubleshooting the problem if I missed a spot.

There is no valid case for supporting duplicate pseudoflavor
registrations.
Currently the silent acceptance of such registrations is hiding a bug.
The rpcsec_gss_krb5 module registers 2 flavours but does not unregister
them, so if you load, unload, reload the module, it will happily
continue to use the old registration which now has pointers to the
memory were the module was originally loaded. This could lead to
unexpected results.
So disallow duplicate registrations.

Fix off-by-one issues in 'rpc_ntop6':
- 'snprintf' returns the number of characters which would have been
written if enough space had been available, excluding the terminating
null byte. Thus, a return value of 'sizeof(scopebuf)' means that the
last character was dropped.
- 'strcat' adds a terminating null byte to the string, thus if len ==
buflen, the null byte is written past the end of the buffer.

Clean up. At this point, we are not ready yet to support bio_vecs in

changes made in svc_tcp_recvfrom().
Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
This function is not currently "generic" so remove the documenting
comment and rename it appropriately. Its internals are converted to
use bio_vecs for reading from the transport socket.
In existing typical sunrpc uses of bio_vecs, the bio_vec array is
allocated dynamically. Here, instead, an array of bio_vecs is added
to svc_rqst. The lifetime of this array can be greater than one call
to xpo_recvfrom():
- Multiple calls to xpo_recvfrom() might be needed to read an RPC
message completely.
- At some later point, rq_arg.bvecs will point to this array and it
will carry the received message into svc_process().
I also expect that a future optimization will remove either the
rq_vec or rq_pages array in favor of rq_bvec, thus conserving the
size of struct svc_rqst.
Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>

record marker into a kvec.
While we're in the area, streamline this helper by straight-lining
the hot path, replace dprintk call sites with tracepoints, and
reduce the number of atomic bit operations in this path.

Clean up. I find the name of the svc_sock::sk_reclen field
confusing, so I've changed it to better reflect its function. This
field is not read directly to get the record length. Rather, it is
a buffer containing a record marker that needs to be decoded.

Report TCP socket state changes and accept failures via
tracepoints, replacing dprintk() call sites.
No tracepoint is added in svc_tcp_listen_data_ready. There's
no information available there that isn't also reported by the
svcsock_new_socket and the accept failure tracepoints.

In addition to tracing recently-updated socket sendto events, this
commit adds a trace event class that can be used for additional
svcsock-related tracepoints in subsequent patches.

Clean up: Commit 850cbaddb5 ("udp: use it's own memory accounting
schema") removed the last skb-related tracepoint from svcsock.c, so
it is no longer necessary to include trace/events/skb.h.

In lieu of dprintks or tracepoints in each individual transport
implementation, introduce tracepoints in the generic part of the RPC
layer. These typically fire for connection lifetime events, so
shouldn't contribute a lot of noise.
Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
Failure to accept a connection is typically due to a problem
specific to a transport type. Also, ->xpo_accept returns NULL
on error rather than reporting a specific problem.
So, add failure-specific tracepoints in svc_rdma_accept().

Clean up: After commit 1e091c3bbf ("svcrdma: Ignore source port
when computing DRC hash"), the IP address stored in xpt_remote
always has a port number of zero. Thus, there's no need to display
the port number when displaying the IP address of a remote NFS/RDMA
client.

Clean up: Use a consistent naming convention so that these trace
points can be enabled quickly via a glob.
Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
Way back when I was writing the RPC/RDMA server-side backchannel
code, I misread the TCP backchannel reply handler logic. When
svc_tcp_recvfrom() successfully receives a backchannel reply, it
does not return -EAGAIN. It sets XPT_DATA and returns zero.
Update svc_rdma_recvfrom() to return zero. Here, XPT_DATA doesn't
need to be set again: it is set whenever a new message is received,
behind a spin lock in a single threaded context.
Also, if handling the cb reply is not successful, the message is
simply dropped. There's no special message framing to deal with as
there is in the TCP case.
Now that the handle_bc_reply() return value is ignored, I've removed
the dprintk call sites in the error exit of handle_bc_reply() in
favor of trace points in other areas that already report the error
cases.

Clean up: Replace a dprintk call site.
This is the last remaining dprintk call site in svc_rdma_rw.c, so

It appears that the RPC/RDMA transport does not need serialization
of calls to its xpo_sendto method. Move the mutex into the socket
methods that still need that serialization.
Tail latencies are unambiguously better with this patch applied.
fio randrw 8KB 70/30 on NFSv3, smaller numbers are better:
clat percentiles (usec):
With xpt_mutex:
r | 99.99th=[ 8848]
w | 99.99th=[ 9634]
Without xpt_mutex:
r | 99.99th=[ 8586]
w | 99.99th=[ 8979]
Serializing the construction of RPC/RDMA transport headers is not
really necessary at this point, because the Linux NFS server
implementation never changes its credit grant on a connection. If
that should change, then svc_rdma_sendto will need to serialize
access to the transport's credit grant fields.

Each rpc_client has a cl_clid which is allocated from a global ida, and
a debugfs directory which is named after cl_clid.
We're releasing the cl_clid before we free the debugfs directory named
after it. As soon as the cl_clid is released, that value is available
for another newly created client.
That leaves a window where another client may attempt to create a new

The rpciod workqueue is on the write-out path for freeing dirty memory,
so it is important that it never block waiting for memory to be
allocated - this can lead to a deadlock.
rpc_execute() - which is often called by an rpciod work item - calls
rcp_task_release_client() which can lead to rpc_free_client().
rpc_free_client() makes two calls which could potentially block wating
for memory allocation.
rpc_clnt_debugfs_unregister() calls into debugfs and will block while
any of the debugfs files are being accessed. In particular it can block
while any of the 'open' methods are being called and all of these use
malloc for one thing or another. So this can deadlock if the memory
allocation waits for NFS to complete some writes via rpciod.
rpc_clnt_remove_pipedir() can take the inode_lock() and while it isn't
obvious that memory allocations can happen while the lock it held, it is
safer to assume they might and to not let rpciod call
rpc_clnt_remove_pipedir().
So this patch moves these two calls (together with the final kfree() and
rpciod_down()) into a work-item to be run from the system work-queue.
rpciod can continue its important work, and the final stages of the free
can happen whenever they happen.
I have seen this deadlock on a 4.12 based kernel where debugfs used
synchronize_srcu() when removing objects. synchronize_srcu() requires a
workqueue and there were no free workther threads and none could be
allocated. While debugsfs no longer uses SRCU, I believe the deadlock
is still possible.

I've noticed that when krb5i or krb5p security is in use,
retransmitted requests are missing the server's duplicate reply
cache. The computed checksum on the retransmitted request does not
match the cached checksum, resulting in the server performing the
retransmitted request again instead of returning the cached reply.
The assumptions made when removing xdr_buf_trim() were not correct.
In the send paths, the upper layer has already set the segment
lengths correctly, and shorting the buffer's content is simply a
matter of reducing buf->len.
xdr_buf_trim() is the right answer in the receive/unwrap path on
both the client and the server. The buffer segment lengths have to
be shortened one-by-one.
On the server side in particular, head.iov_len needs to be updated
correctly to enable nfsd_cache_csum() to work correctly. The simple
buf->len computation doesn't do that, and that results in
checksumming stale data in the buffer.
The problem isn't noticed until there's significant instability of
the RPC transport. At that point, the reliability of retransmit
detection on the server becomes crucial.

When the au_ralign field was added to gss_unwrap_resp_priv, the
wrong calculation was used. Setting au_rslack == au_ralign is
probably correct for kerberos_v1 privacy, but kerberos_v2 privacy
adds additional GSS data after the clear text RPC message.
au_ralign needs to be smaller than au_rslack in that fairly common
case.
When xdr_buf_trim() is restored to gss_unwrap_kerberos_v2(), it does
exactly what I feared it would: it trims off part of the clear text
RPC message. However, that's because rpc_prepare_reply_pages() does
not set up the rq_rcv_buf's tail correctly because au_ralign is too
large.
Fixing the au_ralign computation also corrects the alignment of
rq_rcv_buf->pages so that the client does not have to shift reply
data payloads after they are received.

Refactor: This is a pre-requisite to fixing the client-side ralign
computation in gss_unwrap_resp_priv().
The length value is passed in explicitly rather that as the value
of buf->len. This will subsequently allow gss_unwrap_kerberos_v1()
to compute a slack and align value, instead of computing it in
gss_unwrap_resp_priv().

Instead of having all the sysctl handlers deal with user pointers, which

client's RPC/RDMA transport are a hazard, even when they are
disabled. Rearrange them so that they touch the Work Request only
_before_ ib_post_send() is invoked.

Utilize the xpo_release_rqst transport method to ensure that each
rqstp's svc_rdma_recv_ctxt object is released even when the server
cannot return a Reply for that rqstp.
Without this fix, each RPC whose Reply cannot be sent leaks one
svc_rdma_recv_ctxt. This is a 2.5KB structure, a 4KB DMA-mapped
Receive buffer, and any pages that might be part of the Reply
message.
The leak is infrequent unless the network fabric is unreliable or
Kerberos is in use, as GSS sequence window overruns, which result
in connection loss, are more common on fast transports.

Currently, after the forward channel connection goes away,
backchannel operations are causing soft lockups on the server
because call_transmit_status's SOFTCONN logic ignores ENOTCONN.
Such backchannel Calls are aggressively retried until the client
reconnects.
Backchannel Calls should use RPC_TASK_NOCONNECT rather than
RPC_TASK_SOFTCONN. If there is no forward connection, the server is
not capable of establishing a connection back to the client, thus
that backchannel request should fail before the server attempts to
send it. Commit 58255a4e3c ("NFSD: NFSv4 callback client should
use RPC_TASK_SOFTCONN") was merged several years before
RPC_TASK_NOCONNECT was available.
Because setup_callback_client() explicitly sets NOPING, the NFSv4.0
callback connection depends on the first callback RPC to initiate
a connection to the client. Thus NFSv4.0 needs to continue to use
RPC_TASK_SOFTCONN.

Deleting list entry within hlist_for_each_entry_safe is not safe unless
next pointer (tmp) is protected too. It's not, because once hash_lock

cache_purge can walk to a deleted entry and tries to double free it.
Fix this bug by holding only the deleted entry's reference.

'maxlen' is the total size of the destination buffer. There is only one
caller and this value is 256.
When we compute the size already used and what we would like to add in
the buffer, the trailling NULL character is not taken into account.
However, this trailling character will be added by the 'strcat' once we
have checked that we have enough place.
So, there is a off-by-one issue and 1 byte of the stack could be
erroneously overwridden.
Take into account the trailling NULL, when checking if there is enough
place in the destination buffer.
While at it, also replace a 'sprintf' by a safer 'snprintf', check for
output truncation and avoid a superfluous 'strlen'.

Change the rpcrdma_xprt_disconnect() function so that it no longer
waits for the DISCONNECTED event. This prevents blocking if the
remote is unresponsive.
In rpcrdma_xprt_disconnect(), the transport's rpcrdma_ep is
detached. Upon return from rpcrdma_xprt_disconnect(), the transport
(r_xprt) is ready immediately for a new connection.
The RDMA_CM_DEVICE_REMOVAL and RDMA_CM_DISCONNECTED events are now
handled almost identically.
However, because the lifetimes of rpcrdma_xprt structures and
rpcrdma_ep structures are now independent, creating an rpcrdma_ep
needs to take a module ref count. The ep now owns most of the
hardware resources for a transport.
Also, a kref is needed to ensure that rpcrdma_ep sticks around
long enough for the cm_event_handler to finish.

Move rdma_cm_id creation into rpcrdma_ep_create() so that it is now
responsible for allocating all per-connection hardware resources.
With this clean-up, all three arms of the switch statement in
rpcrdma_ep_connect are exactly the same now, thus the switch can be
removed.
Because device removal behaves a little differently than
disconnection, there is a little more work to be done before
rpcrdma_ep_destroy() can release the connection's rdma_cm_id. So
it is not quite symmetrical with rpcrdma_ep_create() yet.

Refactor rpcrdma_ep_create(), rpcrdma_ep_disconnect(), and
rpcrdma_ep_destroy().
rpcrdma_ep_create will be invoked at connect time instead of at
transport set-up time. It will be responsible for allocating per-
connection resources. In this patch it allocates the CQs and
creates a QP. More to come.
rpcrdma_ep_destroy() is the inverse functionality that is
invoked at disconnect time. It will be responsible for releasing
the CQs and QP.
These changes should be safe to do because both connect and
disconnect is guaranteed to be serialized by the transport send
lock.
This takes us another step closer to resolving the address and route
only at connect time so that connection failover to another device
will work correctly.

socket API, and is a pre-requisite for server send-side support for

Note that svc_process no longer needs to reserve a word for the
stream record marker, since the TCP transport now provides the
record marker automatically in a separate buffer.
The dprintk() in svc_send_common is also removed. It didn't seem
crucial for field troubleshooting. If more is needed there, a trace

On some platforms, DMA mapping part of a page is more costly than
copying bytes. Indeed, not involving the I/O MMU can help the
RPC/RDMA transport scale better for tiny I/Os across more RDMA
devices. This is because interaction with the I/O MMU is eliminated
for each of these small I/Os. Without the explicit unmapping, the
NIC no longer needs to do a costly internal TLB shoot down for
buffers that are just a handful of bytes.

svcrdma expects that the payload falls precisely into the xdr_buf
page vector. This does not seem to be the case for
nfsd4_encode_readv().
This code is called only when fops->splice_read is missing or when
RQ_SPLICE_OK is clear, so it's not a noticeable problem in many
common cases.
Add new transport method: ->xpo_read_payload so that when a READ
payload does not fit exactly in rq_res's page vector, the XDR
encoder can inform the RPC transport exactly where that payload is,
without the payload's XDR pad.
That way, when a Write chunk is present, the transport knows what
byte range in the Reply message is supposed to be matched with the
chunk.
Note that the Linux NFS server implementation of NFS/RDMA can
currently handle only one Write chunk per RPC-over-RDMA message.
This simplifies the implementation of this fix.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

xdr_buf_read_mic() tries to find unused contiguous space in a
received xdr_buf in order to linearize the checksum for the call
to gss_verify_mic. However, the corner cases in this code are
numerous and we seem to keep missing them. I've just hit yet
another buffer overrun related to it.
This overrun is at the end of xdr_buf_read_mic():
1284 if (buf->tail[0].iov_len != 0)
1285 mic->data = buf->tail[0].iov_base + buf->tail[0].iov_len;
1286 else
1287 mic->data = buf->head[0].iov_base + buf->head[0].iov_len;
1288 __read_bytes_from_xdr_buf(&subbuf, mic->data, mic->len);
1289 return 0;
This logic assumes the transport has set the length of the tail
based on the size of the received message. base + len is then
supposed to be off the end of the message but still within the
actual buffer.
In fact, the length of the tail is set by the upper layer when the
Call is encoded so that the end of the tail is actually the end of
the allocated buffer itself. This causes the logic above to set
mic->data to point past the end of the receive buffer.
The "mic->data = head" arm of this if statement is no less fragile.
As near as I can tell, this has been a problem forever. I'm not sure
that minimizing au_rslack recently changed this pathology much.
So instead, let's use a more straightforward approach: kmalloc a
separate buffer to linearize the checksum. This is similar to
how gss_validate() currently works.
Coming back to this code, I had some trouble understanding what
was going on. So I've cleaned up the variable naming and added
a few comments that point back to the XDR definition in RFC 2203
to help guide future spelunkers, including myself.
As an added clean up, the functionality that was in
xdr_buf_read_mic() is folded directly into gss_unwrap_resp_integ(),
as that is its only caller.

The bug was exposed by recent changes to the AMD IOMMU driver, which
enabled sg entry concatenation.

When upcalling gssproxy, cache_head.expiry_time is set as a
timeval, not seconds since boot. As such, RPC cache expiry
logic will not clean expired objects created under
auth.rpcsec.context cache.
This has proven to cause kernel memory leaks on field. Using
64 bit variants of getboottime/timespec
Expiration times have worked this way since 2010's c5b29f885a "sunrpc:
use seconds since boot in expiry cache". The gssproxy code introduced
in 2012 added gss_proxy_save_rsc and introduced the bug. That's a while
for this to lurk, but it required a bit of an extreme case to make it
obvious.

These are updates to device drivers and file systems that for some reason
or another were not included in the kernel in the previous y2038 series.
I've gone through all users of time_t again to make sure the kernel is
in a long-term maintainable state, replacing all remaining references
to time_t with safe alternatives.
Some related parts of the series were picked up into the nfsd, xfs,
alsa and v4l2 trees. A final set of patches in linux-mm removes the now
unused time_t/timeval/timespec types and helper functions after all five
branches are merged for linux-5.6, ensuring that no new users get merged.
As a result, linux-5.6, or my backport of the patches to 5.4 [1], should
be the first release that can serve as a base for a 32-bit system designed
to run beyond year 2038, with a few remaining caveats:
- All user space must be compiled with a 64-bit time_t, which will be
supported in the coming musl-1.2 and glibc-2.32 releases, along with
installed kernel headers from linux-5.6 or higher.
- Applications that use the system call interfaces directly need to be
ported to use the time64 syscalls added in linux-5.1 in place of the
existing system calls. This impacts most users of futex() and seccomp()
as well as programming languages that have their own runtime environment
not based on libc.
- Applications that use a private copy of kernel uapi header files or
their contents may need to update to the linux-5.6 version, in
particular for sound/asound.h, xfs/xfs_fs.h, linux/input.h,
linux/elfcore.h, linux/sockios.h, linux/timex.h and linux/can/bcm.h.
- A few remaining interfaces cannot be changed to pass a 64-bit time_t
in a compatible way, so they must be configured to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC
times or (with a y2106 problem) unsigned 32-bit timestamps. Most
importantly this impacts all users of 'struct input_event'.
- All y2038 problems that are present on 64-bit machines also apply to
32-bit machines. In particular this affects file systems with on-disk
timestamps using signed 32-bit seconds: ext4 with ext3-style small
inodes, ext2, xfs (to be fixed soon) and ufs.

- Rebase to v5.5-rc1, dropping patches that got merged already
- Add NFS, XFS and the final three patches from another series
- Rewrite etnaviv patches
- Add one late revert to avoid an etnaviv regression

current change enables reps for the new connection to be allocated
on whichever NUMA node the new device affines to after a reconnect.
Note that this does not destroy _all_ the transport's reps... there
will be a few that are still part of a running RPC completion.

Currently the underlying RDMA device is chosen at transport set-up
time. But it will soon be at connect time instead.
The maximum size of a transport header is based on device
capabilities. Thus transport header buffers have to be allocated
_after_ the underlying device has been chosen (via address and route
resolution); ie, in the connect worker.
Thus, move the allocation of transport header buffers to the connect
worker, after the point at which the underlying RDMA device has been
chosen.
This also means the RDMA device is available to do a DMA mapping of
these buffers at connect time, instead of in the hot I/O path. Make
that optimization as well.

Refactor: Perform the "is supported" check in rpcrdma_ep_create()
instead of in rpcrdma_ia_open(). frwr_open() is where most of the
logic to query device attributes is already located.
The current code displays a redundant error message when the device
does not support FRWR. As an additional clean-up, this patch removes
the extra message.

To support device hotplug and migrating a connection between devices
of different capabilities, we have to guarantee that all in-kernel
devices can support the same max NFS payload size (1 megabyte).
This means that possibly one or two in-tree devices are no longer
supported for NFS/RDMA because they cannot support 1MB rsize/wsize.
The only one I confirmed was cxgb3, but it has already been removed
from the kernel.

Clean up: there is no need to keep two copies of the same value.
Also, in subsequent patches, rpcrdma_ep_create() will be called in
the connect worker rather than at set-up time.
Minor fix: Initialize the transport's sendctx to the value based on
the capabilities of the underlying device, not the maximum setting.

The size of the sendctx queue depends on the value stored in
ia->ri_max_send_sges. This value is determined by querying the
underlying device.
Eventually, rpcrdma_ia_open() and rpcrdma_ep_create() will be called
in the connect worker rather than at transport set-up time. The
underlying device will not have been chosen device set-up time.
The sendctx queue will thus have to be created after the underlying
device has been chosen via address and route resolution; in other
words, in the connect worker.

Using signed 32-bit types for UTC time leads to the y2038 overflow,
which is what happens in the sunrpc code at the moment.
This changes the sunrpc code over to use time64_t where possible.
The one exception is the gss_import_v{1,2}_context() function for
kerberos5, which uses 32-bit timestamps in the protocol. Here,
we can at least treat the numbers as 'unsigned', which extends the

The proximal cause is that this rpcrdma_rep has a rr_rdmabuf that
is still pointing to the old ib_device, which has been freed. The
only way that is possible is if this rpcrdma_rep was not destroyed
by rpcrdma_ia_remove.
Debugging showed that was indeed the case: this rpcrdma_rep was
still in use by a completing RPC at the time of the device removal,
and thus wasn't on the rep free list. So, it was not found by
rpcrdma_reps_destroy().
The fix is to introduce a list of all rpcrdma_reps so that they all
can be found when a device is removed. That list is used to perform
only regbuf DMA unmapping, replacing that call to
rpcrdma_reps_destroy().
Meanwhile, to prevent corruption of this list, I've moved the
destruction of temp rpcrdma_rep objects to rpcrdma_post_recvs().
rpcrdma_xprt_drain() ensures that post_recvs (and thus rep_destroy) is
not invoked while rpcrdma_reps_unmap is walking rb_all_reps, thus
protecting the rb_all_reps list.

The timestamps for the cache are all in boottime seconds, so they
don't overflow 32-bit values, but the use of time_t is deprecated
because it generally does overflow when used with wall-clock time.
There are multiple possible ways of avoiding it:
- leave time_t, which is safe here, but forces others to
look into this code to determine that it is over and over.
- use a more generic type, like 'int' or 'long', which is known
to be sufficient here but loses the documentation of referring
to timestamps
- use ktime_t everywhere, and convert into seconds in the few
places where we want realtime-seconds. The conversion is
sometimes expensive, but not more so than the conversion we
do today.
- use time64_t to clarify that this code is safe. Nothing would
change for 64-bit architectures, but it is slightly less
efficient on 32-bit architectures.
Without a clear winner of the three approaches above, this picks
the last one, favouring readability over a small performance
loss on 32-bit architectures.

in the next week so I don't have to revert those patches.

RPC tasks on the backchannel never invoke xprt_complete_rqst(), so
there is no way to report their tk_status at completion. Also, any
RPC task that exits via rpc_exit_task() before it is replied to will
also disappear without a trace.
Introduce a trace point that is symmetrical with rpc_task_begin that
captures the termination status of each RPC task.
Sample trace output for callback requests initiated on the server:

NFSv2, v3 and NFSv4 servers often have duplicate replay caches that look
at the source port when deciding whether or not an RPC call is a replay
of a previous call. This requires clients to perform strange TCP gymnastics
in order to ensure that when they reconnect to the server, they bind
to the same source port.
NFSv4.1 and NFSv4.2 have sessions that provide proper replay semantics,
that do not look at the source port of the connection. This patch therefore
ensures they can ignore the rebind requirement.

gss_read_proxy_verf() assumes things about the XDR buffer containing
the RPC Call that are not true for buffers generated by
svc_rdma_recv().
RDMA's buffers look more like what the upper layer generates for
sending: head is a kmalloc'd buffer; it does not point to a page
whose contents are contiguous with the first page in the buffers'
page array. The result is that ACCEPT_SEC_CONTEXT via RPC/RDMA has
stopped working on Linux NFS servers that use gssproxy.
This does not affect clients that use only TCP to send their
ACCEPT_SEC_CONTEXT operation (that's all Linux clients). Other
clients, like Solaris NFS clients, send ACCEPT_SEC_CONTEXT on the
same transport as they send all other NFS operations. Such clients
can send ACCEPT_SEC_CONTEXT via RPC/RDMA.
I thought I had found every direct reference in the server RPC code
to the rqstp->rq_pages field.
Bug found at the 2019 Westford NFS bake-a-thon.

Pending tasks are currently never awoken when the connect worker
fails. The reason is that XPRT_CONNECTED is always clear after a
failure return of rpcrdma_ep_connect, thus the
xprt_test_and_clear_connected() check in xprt_rdma_connect_worker()
always fails.
- xprt_rdma_close always clears XPRT_CONNECTED.
- rpcrdma_ep_connect always clears XPRT_CONNECTED.
After reviewing the TCP connect worker, it appears that there's no
need for extra test_and_set paranoia in xprt_rdma_connect_worker.

On some platforms, DMA mapping part of a page is more costly than
copying bytes. Restore the pull-up code and use that when we
think it's going to be faster. The heuristic for now is to pull-up
when the size of the RPC message body fits in the buffer underlying
the head iovec.
Indeed, not involving the I/O MMU can help the RPC/RDMA transport
scale better for tiny I/Os across more RDMA devices. This is because
interaction with the I/O MMU is eliminated, as is handling a Send
completion, for each of these small I/Os. Without the explicit
unmapping, the NIC no longer needs to do a costly internal TLB shoot
down for buffers that are just a handful of bytes.

ia->ri_id is replaced during a reconnect. The connect_worker runs
with the transport send lock held to prevent ri_id from being
dereferenced by the send_request path during this process.
Currently, however, there is no guarantee that ia->ri_id is stable
in the MR recycling worker, which operates in the background and is
not serialized with the connect_worker in any way.
But now that Local_Inv completions are being done in process
context, we can handle the recycling operation there instead of
deferring the recycling work to another process. Because the
disconnect path drains all work before allowing tear down to
proceed, it is guaranteed that Local Invalidations complete only
while the ri_id pointer is stable.

MRs are now allocated on demand so we can safely throw them away on
disconnect. This way an idle transport can disconnect and it won't
pin hardware MR resources.
Two additional changes:
- Now that all MRs are destroyed on disconnect, there's no need to
check during header marshaling if a req has MRs to recycle. Each
req is sent only once per connection, and now rl_registered is
guaranteed to be empty when rpcrdma_marshal_req is invoked.
- Because MRs are now destroyed in a WQ_MEM_RECLAIM context, they
also must be allocated in a WQ_MEM_RECLAIM context. This reduces
the likelihood that device driver memory allocation will trigger
memory reclaim during NFS writeback.

A recent clean up attempted to separate Receive handling and RPC
Reply processing, in the name of clean layering.
Unfortunately, we can't do this because the Receive Queue has to be
refilled _after_ the most recent credit update from the responder
is parsed from the transport header, but _before_ we wake up the
next RPC sender. That is right in the middle of
rpcrdma_reply_handler().
Usually this isn't a problem because current responder
implementations don't vary their credit grant. The one exception is
when a connection is established: the grant goes from one to a much
larger number on the first Receive. The requester MUST post enough
Receives right then so that any outstanding requests can be sent
without risking RNR and connection loss.

This is because xprt_request_get_cong() is allowing more than one
RPC Call to be transmitted before the first Receive on the new
connection. The first Receive fills the Receive Queue based on the
server's credit grant. Before that Receive, there is only a single
Receive WR posted because the client doesn't know the server's
credit grant.
Solution is to clear rq_cong on all outstanding rpc_rqsts when the
the cwnd is reset. This is because an RPC/RDMA credit is good for
one connection instance only.

Unfortunately there are some cases where re-using that trace point

I was investigating a crash in our Virtuozzo7 kernel which happened in
in svcauth_unix_set_client. I found out that we access m_client field
in ip_map structure, which was received from sunrpc_cache_lookup (we
have a bit older kernel, now the code is in sunrpc_cache_add_entry), and
these field looks uninitialized (m_client == 0x74 don't look like a
pointer) but in the cache_head in flags we see 0x1 which is CACHE_VALID.
It looks like the problem appeared from our previous fix to sunrpc (1):
commit 4ecd55ea07 ("sunrpc: fix cache_head leak due to queued
request")
And we've also found a patch already fixing our patch (2):
commit d58431eacb ("sunrpc: don't mark uninitialised items as VALID.")
Though the crash is eliminated, I think the core of the problem is not
completely fixed:
Neil in the patch (2) makes cache_head CACHE_NEGATIVE, before
cache_fresh_locked which was added in (1) to fix crash. These way
cache_is_valid won't say the cache is valid anymore and in
svcauth_unix_set_client the function cache_check will return error
instead of 0, and we don't count entry as initialized.
But it looks like we need to remove cache_fresh_locked completely in
sunrpc_cache_lookup:
In (1) we've only wanted to make cache_fresh_unlocked->cache_dequeue so
that cache_requests with no readers also release corresponding
cache_head, to fix their leak. We with Vasily were not sure if
cache_fresh_locked and cache_fresh_unlocked should be used in pair or
not, so we've guessed to use them in pair.
Now we see that we don't want the CACHE_VALID bit set here by
cache_fresh_locked, as "valid" means "initialized" and there is no
initialization in sunrpc_cache_add_entry. Both expiry_time and
last_refresh are not used in cache_fresh_unlocked code-path and also not
required for the initial fix.
So to conclude cache_fresh_locked was called by mistake, and we can just
safely remove it instead of crutching it with CACHE_NEGATIVE. It looks
ideologically better for me. Hope I don't miss something here.

Since commit 4f8943f808 ("SUNRPC: Replace direct task wakeups from
softirq context") there has been a race to the value of the sk_err if both
XPRT_SOCK_WAKE_ERROR and XPRT_SOCK_WAKE_DISCONNECT are set. In that case,
we may end up losing the sk_err value that existed when xs_error_report was
called.
Fix this by reverting to the previous behavior: instead of using SO_ERROR
to retrieve the value at a later time (which might also return sk_err_soft),
copy the sk_err value onto struct sock_xprt, and use that value to wake
pending tasks.

The GSS Message Integrity Check data for krb5i may lie partially in the XDR
reply buffer's pages and tail. If so, we try to copy the entire MIC into
free space in the tail. But as the estimations of the slack space required
for authentication and verification have improved there may be less free
space in the tail to complete this copy -- see commit 2c94b8eca1
("SUNRPC: Use au_rslack when computing reply buffer size"). In fact, there
may only be room in the tail for a single copy of the MIC, and not part of
the MIC and then another complete copy.
The real world failure reported is that `ls` of a directory on NFS may
sometimes return -EIO, which can be traced back to xdr_buf_read_netobj()
failing to find available free space in the tail to copy the MIC.
Fix this by checking for the case of the MIC crossing the boundaries of
head, pages, and tail. If so, shift the buffer until the MIC is contained
completely within the pages or tail. This allows the remainder of the
function to create a sub buffer that directly address the complete MIC.

Eli Dorfman reports that after a series of idle disconnects, an
RPC/RDMA transport becomes unusable (rdma_create_qp returns
-ENOMEM). Problem was tracked down to increasing Send Queue size
after each reconnect.
The rdma_create_qp() API does not promise to leave its @qp_init_attr
parameter unaltered. In fact, some drivers do modify one or more of
its fields. Thus our calls to rdma_create_qp must use a fresh copy
of ib_qp_init_attr each time.
This fix is appropriate for kernels dating back to late 2007, though
it will have to be adapted, as the connect code has changed over the
years.

For the moment the returned value just happens to be correct because
the current backchannel server implementation does not vary the
number of credits it offers. The spec does permit this value to
change during the lifetime of a connection, however.

each transport instance has to pre-allocate the resources for

rpcrdma_rep objects are removed from their free list by only a
single thread: the Receive completion handler. Thus that free list
can be converted to an llist, where a single-threaded consumer and
a multi-threaded producer (rpcrdma_buffer_put) can both access the
llist without the need for any serialization.
This eliminates spin lock contention between the Receive completion
handler and rpcrdma_buffer_get, and makes the rep consumer wait-

Although I haven't seen any performance results that justify it,
I've received several complaints that NFS/RDMA no longer supports
a maximum rsize and wsize of 1MB. These days it is somewhat smaller.
To simplify the logic that determines whether a chunk list is
necessary, the implementation uses a fixed maximum size of the
transport header. Currently that maximum size is 256 bytes, one
quarter of the default inline threshold size for RPC/RDMA v1.
Since commit a78868497c ("xprtrdma: Reduce max_frwr_depth"), the
size of chunks is also smaller to take advantage of inline page
lists in device internal MR data structures.
The combination of these two design choices has reduced the maximum
NFS rsize and wsize that can be used for most RNIC/HCAs. Increasing
the maximum transport header size and the maximum number of RDMA
segments it can contain increases the negotiated maximum rsize/wsize
on common RNIC/HCAs.

Things have changed since this comment was written. In particular,
the reworking of connection closing, on-demand creation of MRs, and
the removal of fr_state all mean that deferring MR recovery to
frwr_map is no longer needed. The description is obsolete.

Micro-optimization: For xdr_commit_encode call sites in
net/sunrpc/xdr.c, eliminate the extra calling sequence. On my
client, this change saves about a microsecond for every 30 calls
to xdr_reserve_space().

When the exports table is changed, exportfs will usually write a new
time to the "flush" file in the nfsd.export cache procfile. This tells
the kernel to flush any entries that are older than that value.
This gives us a mechanism to tell whether an unexport might have
occurred. Add a new ->flush cache_detail operation that is called after
flushing the cache whenever someone writes to a "flush" file.

Send and Receive completion is handled on a single CPU selected at
the time each Completion Queue is allocated. Typically this is when
an initiator instantiates an RDMA transport, or when a target
accepts an RDMA connection.
Some ULPs cannot open a connection per CPU to spread completion
workload across available CPUs and MSI vectors. For such ULPs,
provide an API that allows the RDMA core to select a completion
vector based on the device's complement of available comp_vecs.
ULPs that invoke ib_alloc_cq() with only comp_vector 0 are converted
to use the new API so that their completion workloads interfere less
with each other.

The sunrpc cache interface is susceptible to being fooled by a rogue
process just reading a 'channel' file. If this happens the kernel
may think a valid daemon exists to service the cache when it does not.
For example, the following may fool the kernel:
cat /proc/net/rpc/auth.unix.gid/channel
Change the tracking of readers to writers when considering whether a
listener exists as all valid daemon processes either open a channel
file O_RDWR or O_WRONLY. While this does not prevent a rogue process
from "stealing" a message from the kernel, it does at least improve
the kernels perception of whether a valid process servicing the cache
exists.

Merge yet more updates from Andrew Morton:
"The rest of MM and a kernel-wide procfs cleanup.
Summary of the more significant patches:
- Patch series "mm/memory_hotplug: Factor out memory block
devicehandling", v3. David Hildenbrand.
Some spring-cleaning of the memory hotplug code, notably in
drivers/base/memory.c
- "mm: thp: fix false negative of shmem vma's THP eligibility". Yang
Shi.
Fix /proc/pid/smaps output for THP pages used in shmem.
- "resource: fix locking in find_next_iomem_res()" + 1. Nadav Amit.
Bugfix and speedup for kernel/resource.c
- Patch series "mm: Further memory block device cleanups", David
Hildenbrand.
More spring-cleaning of the memory hotplug code.
- Patch series "mm: Sub-section memory hotplug support". Dan
Williams.
Generalise the memory hotplug code so that pmem can use it more
completely. Then remove the hacks from the libnvdimm code which
were there to work around the memory-hotplug code's constraints.
- "proc/sysctl: add shared variables for range check", Matteo Croce.
We have about 250 instances of
int zero;
...
.extra1 = &zero,
in the tree. This is a tree-wide sweep to make all those private
"zero"s and "one"s use global variables.
Alas, it isn't practical to make those two global integers const"
