We have proper stubs for the IOAPIC=n case and the setup/enable
function have the required checks inside now. Remove the ifdeffery and
the copy&pasted conditionals.

enable_x2apic() is a convoluted unreadable mess because it is used for
both enablement in early boot and for setup in cpu_init().
Split the code into x2apic_enable() for enablement and x2apic_setup()
for setup of (secondary cpus). Make use of the new state tracking to
simplify the logic.

There is no point in postponing the hardware disablement of x2apic. It
can be disabled right away in the nox2apic setup function.
Disable it right away and set the state to DISABLED . This allows to
remove all the nox2apic conditionals all over the place.

Having 3 different variables to track the state is just silly and
error prone. Add a proper state tracking variable which covers the
three possible states: ON/OFF/DISABLED.
We cannot use x2apic_mode for this as this would require to change all
users of x2apic_mode with explicit comparisons for a state value
instead of treating it as boolean.

No point in having try_to_enable_x2apic() outside of the

If x2apic_preenabled is not enabled, then disable_x2apic() is not
called from various places which results in x2apic_disabled not being

support is disabled it does not reflect the actual hardware

In Dom0's the use of the TSC clocksource (whenever it is stable enough to
be used) instead of the Xen clocksource should not cause any issues, as
Dom0 VMs never live-migrated. The TSC clocksource is somewhat more
efficient than the Xen paravirtualised clocksource, thus it should have
higher rating.
This patch decreases the rating of the Xen clocksource in Dom0s to 275.
Which is half-way between the rating of the TSC clocksource (300) and the
hpet clocksource (250).

VMWare seems not to emulate the PAT MSR correctly: reaeding
MSR_IA32_CR_PAT returns 0 even after writing another value to it.
Commit bd809af16e triggers this VMWare bug when the kernel is
booted as a VMWare guest.
Detect this bug and don't use the read value if it is 0.

math_state_restore() can race with kernel_fpu_begin() if irq comes
right after __thread_fpu_begin(), __save_init_fpu() will overwrite
fpu->state we are going to restore.
Add 2 simple helpers, kernel_fpu_disable() and kernel_fpu_enable()
which simply set/clear in_kernel_fpu, and change math_state_restore()
to exclude kernel_fpu_begin() in between.
Alternatively we could use local_irq_save/restore, but probably these
new helpers can have more users.
Perhaps they should disable/enable preemption themselves, in this case
we can remove preempt_disable() in __restore_xstate_sig().

Now that we have in_kernel_fpu we can remove __thread_clear_has_fpu()
in __kernel_fpu_begin(). And this allows to replace the asymmetrical
and nontrivial use_eager_fpu + tsk_used_math check in kernel_fpu_end()
with the same __thread_has_fpu() check.
The logic becomes really simple; if _begin() does save() then _end()
needs restore(), this is controlled by __thread_has_fpu(). Otherwise
they do clts/stts unless use_eager_fpu().
Not only this makes begin/end symmetrical and imo more understandable,
potentially this allows to change irq_fpu_usable() to avoid all other
checks except "in_kernel_fpu".
Also, with this patch __kernel_fpu_end() does restore_fpu_checking()
and WARNs if it fails instead of math_state_restore(). I think this
looks better because we no longer need __thread_fpu_begin(), and it
would be better to report the failure in this case.

interrupted_kernel_fpu_idle() tries to detect if kernel_fpu_begin()
is safe or not. In particular it should obviously deny the nested
kernel_fpu_begin() and this logic looks very confusing.
If use_eager_fpu() == T we rely on a) __thread_has_fpu() check in
interrupted_kernel_fpu_idle(), and b) on the fact that _begin() does
__thread_clear_has_fpu().
Otherwise we demand that the interrupted task has no FPU if it is in
kernel mode, this works because __kernel_fpu_begin() does clts() and
interrupted_kernel_fpu_idle() checks X86_CR0_TS.
Add the per-cpu "bool in_kernel_fpu" variable, and change this code
to check/set/clear it. This allows to do more cleanups and fixes, see
the next changes.
The patch also moves WARN_ON_ONCE() under preempt_disable() just to
make this_cpu_read() look better, this is not really needed. And in
fact I think we should move it into __kernel_fpu_begin().

Xen overrides __acpi_register_gsi and leaves __acpi_unregister_gsi as is.
That means, an IRQ allocated by acpi_register_gsi_xen_hvm() or
acpi_register_gsi_xen() will be freed by acpi_unregister_gsi_ioapic(),
which may cause undesired effects. So override __acpi_unregister_gsi to
NULL for safety.

Currently Xen Domain0 has special treatment for ACPI SCI interrupt,
that is initialize irq for ACPI SCI at early stage in a special way as:
xen_init_IRQ()
->pci_xen_initial_domain()
->xen_setup_acpi_sci()
Allocate and initialize irq for ACPI SCI
Function xen_setup_acpi_sci() calls acpi_gsi_to_irq() to get an irq
number for ACPI SCI. But unfortunately acpi_gsi_to_irq() depends on
IOAPIC irqdomains through following path
acpi_gsi_to_irq()
->mp_map_gsi_to_irq()
->mp_map_pin_to_irq()
->check IOAPIC irqdomain
For PV domains, it uses Xen event based interrupt manangement and
doesn't make uses of native IOAPIC, so no irqdomains created for IOAPIC.
This causes Xen domain0 fail to install interrupt handler for ACPI SCI
and all ACPI events will be lost. Please refer to:

So the fix is to get rid of special treatment for ACPI SCI, just treat
ACPI SCI as normal GSI interrupt as:
acpi_gsi_to_irq()
->acpi_register_gsi()

With above change, there's no need for xen_setup_acpi_sci() anymore.
The above change also works with bare metal kernel too.

The int_ret_from_sys_call and syscall tracing code disagrees
with the sysret path as to the value of RCX.
The Intel SDM, the AMD APM, and my laptop all agree that sysret
returns with RCX == RIP. The syscall tracing code does not
respect this property.

the mixture of function graph tracing and kprobes.
When jprobes and function graph tracing is enabled at the same time
it will crash the system.
# modprobe jprobe_example
# echo function_graph > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/current_tracer
After the first fork (jprobe_example probes it), the system will crash.
This is due to the way jprobes copies the stack frame and does not
do a normal function return. This messes up with the function graph
tracing accounting which hijacks the return address from the stack
and replaces it with a hook function. It saves the return addresses in
a separate stack to put back the correct return address when done.
But because the jprobe functions do not do a normal return, their
stack addresses are not put back until the function they probe is called,
which means that the probed function will get the return address of
the jprobe handler instead of its own.
The simple fix here was to disable function graph tracing while the
jprobe handler is being called.
While debugging this I found two minor bugs with the function graph
tracing.
The first was about the function graph tracer sharing its function hash
with the function tracer (they both get filtered by the same input).
The changing of the set_ftrace_filter would not sync the function recording
records after a change if the function tracer was disabled but the
function graph tracer was enabled. This was due to the update only checking
one of the ops instead of the shared ops to see if they were enabled and
should perform the sync. This caused the ftrace accounting to break and
a ftrace_bug() would be triggered, disabling ftrace until a reboot.
The second was that the check to update records only checked one of the
filter hashes. It needs to test both the "filter" and "notrace" hashes.
The "filter" hash determines what functions to trace where as the "notrace"
hash determines what functions not to trace (trace all but these).
Both hashes need to be passed to the update code to find out what change
is being done during the update. This also broke the ftrace record
accounting and triggered a ftrace_bug().
This patch set also include two more fixes that were reported separately
from the kprobe issue.
One was that init_ftrace_syscalls() was called twice at boot up.
This is not a major bug, but that call performed a rather large kmalloc
(NR_syscalls * sizeof(*syscalls_metadata)). The second call made the first
one a memory leak, and wastes memory.
The other fix is a regression caused by an update in the v3.19 merge window.
The moving to enable events early, moved the enabling before PID 1 was
created. The syscall events require setting the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACEPOINT
for all tasks. But for_each_process_thread() does not include the swapper
task (PID 0), and ended up being a nop. A suggested fix was to add
the init_task() to have its flag set, but I didn't really want to mess
with PID 0 for this minor bug. Instead I disable and re-enable events again
at early_initcall() where it use to be enabled. This also handles any other
event that might have its own reg function that could break at early
boot up.

Every PCI-PCI bridge window should fit inside an upstream bridge window
because orphaned address space is unreachable from the primary side of the

cycles:p and cycles:pp do not work on SLM since commit:
86a04461a9 ("perf/x86: Revamp PEBS event selection")
UOPS_RETIRED.ALL is not a PEBS capable event, so it should not be used
to count cycle number.
Actually SLM calls intel_pebs_aliases_core2() which uses INST_RETIRED.ANY_P
to count the number of cycles. It's a PEBS capable event. But inv and
cmask must be set to count cycles.
Considering SLM allows all events as PEBS with no flags, only
INST_RETIRED.ANY_P, inv=1, cmask=16 needs to handled specially.

This patch fixes a problem with the initialization of the
sysfs_show() routine for the RAPL PMU.
The current code was wrongly relying on the EVENT_ATTR_STR()
macro which uses the events_sysfs_show() function in the x86
PMU code. That function itself was relying on the x86_pmu data
structure. Yet RAPL and the core PMU (x86_pmu) have nothing to
do with each other. They should therefore not interact with
each other.
The x86_pmu structure is initialized at boot time based on
the host CPU model. When the host CPU is not supported, the
x86_pmu remains uninitialized and some of the callbacks it
contains are NULL.
The false dependency with x86_pmu could potentially cause crashes
in case the x86_pmu is not initialized while the RAPL PMU is. This
may, for instance, be the case in virtualized environments.
This patch fixes the problem by using a private sysfs_show()
routine for exporting the RAPL PMU events.

If the function graph tracer traces a jprobe callback, the system will
crash. This can easily be demonstrated by compiling the jprobe
sample module that is in the kernel tree, loading it and running the
function graph tracer.

The first two commands end up in a nice crash after the first fork.
(do_fork has a jprobe attached to it, so "ls" just triggers that fork)
The problem is caused by the jprobe_return() that all jprobe callbacks
must end with. The way jprobes works is that the function a jprobe
is attached to has a breakpoint placed at the start of it (or it uses
ftrace if fentry is supported). The breakpoint handler (or ftrace callback)
will copy the stack frame and change the ip address to return to the
jprobe handler instead of the function. The jprobe handler must end
with jprobe_return() which swaps the stack and does an int3 (breakpoint).
This breakpoint handler will then put back the saved stack frame,
simulate the instruction at the beginning of the function it added
a breakpoint to, and then continue on.
For function tracing to work, it hijakes the return address from the
stack frame, and replaces it with a hook function that will trace
the end of the call. This hook function will restore the return
address of the function call.
If the function tracer traces the jprobe handler, the hook function
for that handler will not be called, and its saved return address
will be used for the next function. This will result in a kernel crash.
To solve this, pause function tracing before the jprobe handler is called
and unpause it before it returns back to the function it probed.
Some other updates:
Used a variable "saved_sp" to hold kcb->jprobe_saved_sp. This makes the
code look a bit cleaner and easier to understand (various tries to fix
this bug required this change).
Note, if fentry is being used, jprobes will change the ip address before
the function graph tracer runs and it will not be able to trace the
function that the jprobe is probing.

When interrupt remapping hardware is not in X2APIC, CPU X2APIC mode
will be disabled if:
1) Maximum CPU APIC ID is bigger than 255
2) hypervisior doesn't support x2apic mode.
But we should only check whether hypervisor supports X2APIC mode when
hypervisor(CONFIG_HYPERVISOR_GUEST) is enabled, otherwise X2APIC will
always be disabled when CONFIG_HYPERVISOR_GUEST is disabled and IR
doesn't work in X2APIC mode.

If remapping is in XAPIC mode, the setup code just skips X2APIC
initialization without checking max CPU APIC ID in system, which may
cause problem if system has a CPU with APIC ID bigger than 255.
Handle IR in XAPIC mode the same way as if remapping is disabled.

X2APIC will be disabled if user specifies "nox2apic" on kernel command
line, even when x2apic_preenabled is true. So correctly detect X2APIC
status by using x2apic_enabled() instead of x2apic_preenabled.

When kernel doesn't support X2APIC but BIOS has enabled X2APIC, system
may panic or hang without useful messages. On the other hand, it's
hard to dynamically disable X2APIC when CONFIG_X86_X2APIC is disabled.
So panic with a clear message in such a case.

If x2apic got disabled on the kernel command line, then the following
issue can happen:
enable_IR_x2apic()
....
x2apic_mode = 1;
enable_x2apic();
if (x2apic_disabled) {
__disable_x2apic();
return;
}
That leaves X2APIC disabled in hardware, but x2apic_mode stays 1. So
all other code which checks x2apic_mode gets the wrong information.
Set x2apic_mode to 0 after disabling it in hardware.
This is just a hotfix. The proper solution is to rework this code so
it has seperate functions for the initial setup on the boot processor
and the secondary cpus, but that's beyond the scope of this fix.

enable_IR_x2apic() calls setup_irq_remapping_ops() which by default
installs the intel dmar remapping ops and then calls the amd iommu irq
remapping prepare callback to figure out whether we are running on an
AMD machine with irq remapping hardware.
Right after that it calls irq_remapping_prepare() which pointlessly
checks:
if (!remap_ops || !remap_ops->prepare)
return -ENODEV;
and then calls
remap_ops->prepare()
which is silly in the AMD case as it got called from
setup_irq_remapping_ops() already a few microseconds ago.
Simplify this and just collapse everything into
irq_remapping_prepare().
The irq_remapping_prepare() remains still silly as it assigns blindly
the intel ops, but that's not scope of this patch.
The scope here is to move the preperatory work, i.e. memory
allocations out of the atomic section which is required to enable irq
remapping.

Commit 5d26a105b5 ("crypto: prefix module autoloading with "crypto-"")
changed the automatic module loading when requesting crypto algorithms
to prefix all module requests with "crypto-". This requires all crypto
modules to have a crypto specific module alias even if their file name
would otherwise match the requested crypto algorithm.
Even though commit 5d26a105b5 added those aliases for a vast amount of
modules, it was missing a few. Add the required MODULE_ALIAS_CRYPTO
annotations to those files to make them get loaded automatically, again.
This fixes, e.g., requesting 'ecb(blowfish-generic)', which used to work
with kernels v3.18 and below.
Also change MODULE_ALIAS() lines to MODULE_ALIAS_CRYPTO(). The former
won't work for crypto modules any more.

Using the native code here can't work properly, as the hypervisor would
normally have cleared the two reason bits by the time Dom0 gets to see
the NMI (if passed to it at all). There's a shared info field for this,
and there's an existing hook to use - just fit the two together. This
is particularly relevant so that NMIs intended to be handled by APEI /
GHES actually make it to the respective handler.
Note that the hook can (and should) be used irrespective of whether
being in Dom0, as accessing port 0x61 in a DomU would be even worse,
while the shared info field would just hold zero all the time. Note
further that hardware NMI handling for PVH doesn't currently work
anyway due to missing code in the hypervisor (but it is expected to
work the native rather than the PV way).

When allocating a new pmd for the linear mapped p2m list a check is
done for not introducing another pmd when this just happened on
another cpu. In this case the old pte pointer was returned which
points to the p2m_missing or p2m_identity page. The correct value
would be the pointer to the found new page.

dmesg (from util-linux) currently has two methods for reading the kernel
message ring buffer: /dev/kmsg and syslog(2). Since kernel 3.5.0 kmsg
has been the default, which escapes control characters (e.g. new lines)
before they are shown.
This change means that when dmesg is using /dev/kmsg, a 2 line printk
makes the output messy, because the second line does not get a
timestamp.

There was another report of a boot failure with a #GP fault in the
uncore SBOX initialization. The earlier work around was not enough
for this system.
The boot was failing while trying to initialize the third SBOX.
This patch detects parts with only two SBOXes and limits the number
of SBOX units to two there.
Stable material, as it affects boot problems on 3.18.

Perf reports user regs for kernel-mode samples so that samples can
be backtraced through user code. The old code was very broken in
syscall context, resulting in useless backtraces.

On x86_64, at least, task_pt_regs may be only partially initialized
in many contexts, so x86_64 should not use it without extra care
from interrupt context, let alone NMI context.
This will allow x86_64 to override the logic and will supply some
scratch space to use to make a cleaner copy of user regs.

Stephane reported that the PEBS fixup was broken by the recent commit to
the instruction decoder. The thing had an off-by-one which resulted in
not being able to decode the last instruction and always bail.

We are aborting a build in case when gcc doesn't support fentry on x86_64
(regs->ip modification can't really reliably work with mcount).
This however breaks allmodconfig for people with older gccs that don't
support -mfentry.
Turn the build-time failure into runtime failure, resulting in the whole
infrastructure not being initialized if CC_USING_FENTRY is unset.

When emulating an instruction that reads the destination memory operand (i.e.,
instructions without the Mov flag in the emulator), the operand is first read.
If a page-fault is detected in this phase, the error-code which would be
delivered to the VM does not indicate that the access that caused the exception
is a write one. This does not conform with real hardware, and may cause the VM
to enter the page-fault handler twice for no reason (once for read, once for
write).

When software changes D bit (either from 1 to 0, or 0 to 1), the
corresponding TLB entity in the hardware won't be updated immediately. We
should flush it to guarantee the consistence of D bit between TLB and
MMU page table in memory. This is especially important when clearing
the D bit, since it may cause false negatives in reporting dirtiness.
Sanity test was done on my machine with Intel processor.

When access to descriptor in LDT/GDT wraparound outside long-mode, the address
of the descriptor should be truncated to 32-bit. Citing Intel SDM 2.1.1.1
"Global and Local Descriptor Tables in IA-32e Mode": "GDTR and LDTR registers
are expanded to 64-bits wide in both IA-32e sub-modes (64-bit mode and
compatibility mode)."
So in other cases, we need to truncate. Creating new function to return a
pointer to descriptor table to avoid too much code duplication.

When segment is loaded, the segment access bit is set unconditionally. In
fact, it should be set conditionally, based on whether the segment had the
accessed bit set before. In addition, it can improve performance.

According to Intel SDM: "If the ESP register is used as a base register for
addressing a destination operand in memory, the POP instruction computes the
effective address of the operand after it increments the ESP register."
The current emulation does not behave so. The fix required to waste another
of the precious instruction flags and to check the flag in decode_modrm.

The KVM emulator does not emulate JMP and CALL that target a call gate or a
task gate. This patch does not try to implement these scenario as they are
presumably rare; yet it returns X86EMUL_UNHANDLEABLE error in such cases
instead of generating an exception.

Since the operand size of fnstcw and fnstsw is updated during the execution,
the emulation may cause spurious exceptions as it reads the memory beforehand.
Marking these instructions as Mov (since the previous value is ignored) and
DstMem16 to simplify the setting of operand size.

For the hrtimer which emulates the tscdeadline timer in the guest,
add an option to advance expiration, and busy spin on VM-entry waiting
for the actual expiration time to elapse.
This allows achieving low latencies in cyclictest (or any scenario
which requires strict timing regarding timer expiration).
Reduces average cyclictest latency from 12us to 8us
on Core i5 desktop.
Note: this option requires tuning to find the appropriate value
for a particular hardware/guest combination. One method is to measure the
average delay between apic_timer_fn and VM-entry.
Another method is to start with 1000ns, and increase the value
in say 500ns increments until avg cyclictest numbers stop decreasing.

In most cases calling hwapic_isr_update(), we always check if
kvm_apic_vid_enabled() == 1, but actually,
kvm_apic_vid_enabled()
-> kvm_x86_ops->vm_has_apicv()
-> vmx_vm_has_apicv() or '0' in svm case
-> return enable_apicv && irqchip_in_kernel(kvm)
So its a little cost to recall vmx_vm_has_apicv() inside
hwapic_isr_update(), here just NULL out hwapic_isr_update() in
case of !enable_apicv inside hardware_setup() then make all
related stuffs follow this. Note we don't check this under that
condition of irqchip_in_kernel() since we should make sure
definitely any caller don't work without in-kernel irqchip.

When generating #PF VM-exit, check equality:

If there is equality, the 14 bit of exception bitmap is used to take decision

This patch improve checks required by Intel Software Developer Manual.
- SMM MSRs are not allowed.
- microcode MSRs are not allowed.
- check x2apic MSRs only when LAPIC is in x2apic mode.
- MSR switch areas must be aligned to 16 bytes.
- address of first and last byte in MSR switch areas should not set any bits
beyond the processor's physical-address width.
Also it adds warning messages on failures during MSR switch. These messages
are useful for people who debug their VMMs in nVMX.

Several hypervisors need MSR auto load/restore feature.
We read MSRs from VM-entry MSR load area which specified by L1,
and load them via kvm_set_msr in the nested entry.
When nested exit occurs, we get MSRs via kvm_get_msr, writing
them to L1`s MSR store area. After this, we read MSRs from VM-exit
MSR load area, and load them via kvm_set_msr.

In case kasprintf() fails in xen_setup_timer() we assign name to the
static string "<timer kasprintf failed>". We, however, don't check
that fact before issuing kfree() in xen_teardown_timer(), kernel is
supposed to crash with 'kernel BUG at mm/slub.c:3341!'
Solve the issue by making name a fixed length string inside struct
xen_clock_event_device. 16 bytes should be enough.

If the non-RAM regions in the e820 memory map are larger than the size
of the initial balloon, a BUG was triggered as the frames are remaped
beyond the limit of the linear p2m. The frames are remapped into the
initial balloon area (xen_extra_mem) but not enough of this is
available.
Ensure enough extra memory regions are added for these remapped
frames.

There are more that one SPI controller on the Intel MID boards. This patch
describes the status and IDs of them. From now on we also have to care about
bus number that must be unique per host.
According to the specification the SPI1 has 5 bits for chip selects and SPI2
only 2 bits. The patch makes it depend to PCI ID.
The first controller (SPI1) is DMA capable, meanwhile SPI2 can share same
channels (via software switch) such functionality is not in the scope of this
patch. Thus, attempt to init DMA for SPI2 will always fail for now.

SRCU is not necessary to be compiled by default in all cases. For tinification
efforts not compiling SRCU unless necessary is desirable.
The current patch tries to make compiling SRCU optional by introducing a new
Kconfig option CONFIG_SRCU which is selected when any of the components making
use of SRCU are selected.
If we do not select CONFIG_SRCU, srcu.o will not be compiled at all.

acpi_map_lsapic() will allocate a logical CPU number and map it to
physical CPU id (such as APIC id) for the hot-added CPU, it will also
do some mapping for NUMA node id and etc, acpi_unmap_lsapic() will
do the reverse.
We can see that the name of the function is a little bit confusing and
arch (IA64) dependent so rename them as acpi_(un)map_cpu() to make arch
agnostic and explicit.

The "by8" counter mode optimization is broken for 128 bit keys with
input data longer than 128 bytes. It uses the wrong key material for
en- and decryption.
The key registers xkey0, xkey4, xkey8 and xkey12 need to be preserved
in case we're handling more than 128 bytes of input data -- they won't
get reloaded after the initial load. They must therefore be (a) loaded
on the first iteration and (b) be preserved for the latter ones. The
implementation for 128 bit keys does not comply with (a) nor (b).
Fix this by bringing the implementation back to its original source
and correctly load the key registers and preserve their values by
*not* re-using the registers for other purposes.
Kudos to James for reporting the issue and providing a test case
showing the discrepancies.

Commit a074335a37 ("x86, um: Mark system call tables readonly") was
supposed to mark the sys_call_table in UML as RO by adding the const,
but it doesn't have the desired effect as it's nevertheless being placed
into the data section since __cacheline_aligned enforces sys_call_table
being placed into .data..cacheline_aligned instead. We need to use
the ____cacheline_aligned version instead to fix this issue.

We currently pretend that IST context is like standard exception
context, but this is incorrect. IST entries from userspace are like
standard exceptions except that they use per-cpu stacks, so they are
atomic. IST entries from kernel space are like NMIs from RCU's
perspective -- they are not quiescent states even if they
interrupted the kernel during a quiescent state.
Add and use ist_enter and ist_exit to track IST context. Even
though x86_32 has no IST stacks, we track these interrupts the same
way.
This fixes two issues:
- Scheduling from an IST interrupt handler will now warn. It would
previously appear to work as long as we got lucky and nothing
overwrote the stack frame. (I don't know of any bugs in this
that would trigger the warning, but it's good to be on the safe
side.)
- RCU handling in IST context was dangerous. As far as I know,
only machine checks were likely to trigger this, but it's good to
be on the safe side.
Note that the machine check handlers appears to have been missing
any context tracking at all before this patch.

This causes all non-NMI, non-double-fault kernel entries from
userspace to run on the normal kernel stack. Double-fault is
exempt to minimize confusion if we double-fault directly from
userspace due to a bad kernel stack.
This is, suprisingly, simpler and shorter than the current code. It
removes the IMO rather frightening paranoid_userspace path, and it
make sync_regs much simpler.
There is no risk of stack overflow due to this change -- the kernel
stack that we switch to is empty.
This will also enable us to create non-atomic sections within
machine checks from userspace, which will simplify memory failure
handling. It will also allow the upcoming fsgsbase code to be
simplified, because it doesn't need to worry about usergs when
scheduling in paranoid_exit, as that code no longer exists.

In Linux 3.18 and below, GCC hoists the lsl instructions in the
pvclock code all the way to the beginning of __vdso_clock_gettime,
slowing the non-paravirt case significantly. For unknown reasons,
presumably related to the removal of a branch, the performance issue
is gone as of
e76b027e64 x86,vdso: Use LSL unconditionally for vgetcpu
but I don't trust GCC enough to expect the problem to stay fixed.
There should be no correctness issue, because the __getcpu calls in
__vdso_vlock_gettime were never necessary in the first place.
Note to stable maintainers: In 3.18 and below, depending on
configuration, gcc 4.9.2 generates code like this:

The old scheme can lead to failure in certain cases - the
problem is that after bumping step_size the next (non-final)
iteration is only guaranteed to make available a memory block
the size of what step_size was before. E.g. for a memory block
[0,3004600000) we'd have:

Yet to map 64G with 4k pages (as happens e.g. under PV Xen) we
need slightly over 128M, but the first three iterations made
only about 70M available.
The condition (new_mapped_ram_size > mapped_ram_size) for
bumping step_size is just not suitable. Instead we want to bump
it when we know we have enough memory available to cover a block
of the new step_size. And rather than making that condition more
complicated than needed, simply adjust step_size by the largest
possible factor we know we can cover at that point - which is
shifting it left by one less than the difference between page
table level shifts. (Interestingly the original STEP_SIZE_SHIFT
definition had a comment hinting at that having been the
intention, just that it should have been PUD_SHIFT-PMD_SHIFT-1
instead of (PUD_SHIFT-PMD_SHIFT)/2, and of course for non-PAE
32-bit we can't really use these two constants as they're equal
there.)
Furthermore the comment in get_new_step_size() didn't get
updated when the bottom-down mapping logic got added. Yet while
an overflow (flushing step_size to zero) of the shift doesn't
matter for the top-down method, it does for bottom-up because
round_up(x, 0) = 0, and an upper range boundary of zero can't
really work well.

This commit introduces code for the live patching core. It implements
an ftrace-based mechanism and kernel interface for doing live patching
of kernel and kernel module functions.
It represents the greatest common functionality set between kpatch and
kgraft and can accept patches built using either method.
This first version does not implement any consistency mechanism that
ensures that old and new code do not run together. In practice, ~90% of
CVEs are safe to apply in this way, since they simply add a conditional
check. However, any function change that can not execute safely with
the old version of the function can _not_ be safely applied in this
version.

but the implementation seems to have been buggy since the very beginning.
This fixes the implementation to remove a large bias that caused a small
fraction of possible vdso load addresess to be vastly more likely than

The theory behind vdso randomization is that it's mapped at a random
offset above the top of the stack. To avoid wasting a page of
memory for an extra page table, the vdso isn't supposed to extend
past the lowest PMD into which it can fit. Other than that, the
address should be a uniformly distributed address that meets all of
the alignment requirements.
The current algorithm is buggy: the vdso has about a 50% probability
of being at the very end of a PMD. The current algorithm also has a
decent chance of failing outright due to incorrect handling of the
case where the top of the stack is near the top of its PMD.
This fixes the implementation. The paxtest estimate of vdso
"randomisation" improves from 11 bits to 18 bits. (Disclaimer: I
don't know what the paxtest code is actually calculating.)
It's worth noting that this algorithm is inherently biased: the vdso
is more likely to end up near the end of its PMD than near the
beginning. Ideally we would either nix the PMD sharing requirement
or jointly randomize the vdso and the stack to reduce the bias.
In the mean time, this is a considerable improvement with basically
no risk of compatibility issues, since the allowed outputs of the
algorithm are unchanged.
As an easy test, doing this:

It turns out that there's a lurking ABI issue. GCC, when
compiling this in a 32-bit program:

had a really stupid typo: the FAULT_FLAG_USER bit is in the 'flags'
variable, not the 'fault' variable. Duh,

in. IO_APIC_get_PCI_irq_vector() does not do anything useful with it
either.

We are going to support ACPI based IOAPIC hotplug, so introduce a mutex
to protect IOAPIC data structures from IOAPIC hotplug. We choose to
serialize in ACPI instead of in the IOAPIC core because:
1) currently we only plan to support ACPI based IOAPIC hotplug
2) it's much more cleaner and easier
3) It does't affect IOAPIC discovered by devicetree, SFI and mpparse.

To keep balance of IOAPIC pin reference count, we need to protect
pirq_enable_irq(), acpi_pci_irq_enable() and intel_mid_pci_irq_enable()
from reentrance. There are two cases which will cause reentrance.
The first case is caused by suspend/hibernation. If pcibios_disable_irq
is called during suspending/hibernating, we don't release the assigned
IRQ number, otherwise it may break the suspend/hibernation. So late when
pcibios_enable_irq is called during resume, we shouldn't allocate IRQ
number again.
The second case is that function acpi_pci_irq_enable() may be called
twice for PCI devices present at boot time as below:
1) pci_acpi_init()
--> acpi_pci_irq_enable() if pci_routeirq is true
2) pci_enable_device()
--> pcibios_enable_device()
--> acpi_pci_irq_enable()
We can't kill kernel parameter pci_routeirq yet because it's still
needed for debugging purpose.
So flag irq_managed is introduced to track whether IRQ number is
assigned by OS and to protect pirq_enable_irq(), acpi_pci_irq_enable()
and intel_mid_pci_irq_enable() from reentrance.

There is no reason to keep preemption disabled in this function.
We only have two other threads live: kthreadd and idle. Neither of
them is going to preempt. But that preempt_disable forces all the code
inside to do GFP_ATOMIC allocations which is just insane.
Remove it.

When X86_LOCAL_APIC (i.e. unconditionally on x86-64),
first_system_vector will never end up being higher than
LOCAL_TIMER_VECTOR (0xef), and hence building stubs for vectors
0xef...0xff is pointlessly reducing code density. Deal with this at
build time already.
Taking into consideration that X86_64 implies X86_LOCAL_APIC, also
simplify (and hence make easier to read and more consistent with the
change done here) some #if-s in arch/x86/kernel/irqinit.c.
While we could further improve the packing of the IRQ entry stubs (the
four ones now left in the last set could be fit into the four padding
bytes each of the final four sets have) this doesn't seem to provide
any real benefit: Both irq_entries_start and common_interrupt getting
cache line aligned, eliminating the 30th set would just produce 32
bytes of padding between the 29th and common_interrupt.

While f3761db164 ("x86, irq: Fix build error caused by
9eabc99a635a77cbf09") addressed the original build problem,
declaration, inline stub, and definition still seem misplaced: It isn't
really IO-APIC related, and it's being used solely in arch/x86/pci/.
This also means stubbing it out when !CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC was at least
questionable.

- AMD KFD driver merge
This is the AMD HSA interface for exposing a lowlevel interface for
GPGPU use. They have an open source userspace built on top of this
interface, and the code looks as good as it was going to get out of
tree.
- Initial atomic modesetting work
The need for an atomic modesetting interface to allow userspace to
try and send a complete set of modesetting state to the driver has
arisen, and been suffering from neglect this past year. No more,
the start of the common code and changes for msm driver to use it
are in this tree. Ongoing work to get the userspace ioctl finished
and the code clean will probably wait until next kernel.

The VM_FAULT_RETRY handling was confusing and incorrect for the case of
returning to kernel mode. We need to handle the exception table fixup
if we return to kernel mode due to a fatal signal - it will basically
look to the kernel user mode access like the access failed due to the VM
going away from udner it. Which is correct - the process is dying - and
avoids the whole "repeat endless kernel page faults" case.
Handling the VM_FAULT_RETRY early and in just one place also simplifies
the mmap_sem handling, since once we've taken care of VM_FAULT_RETRY we
know that we can just drop the lock. The remaining accounting and
possible error handling is thread-local and does not need the mmap_sem.

This replaces four copies in various stages of mm_fault_error() handling
with just a single one. It will also allow for more natural placement
of the unlocking after some further cleanup.

Some BIOSes utilize PCI MMCFG space read/write opertion to trigger
specific errors. EINJ will report errors as below when hitting such
cases:
APEI: Can not request [mem 0x83f990a0-0x83f990a3] for APEI EINJ Trigger registers
It is because on x86 platform ACPI based PCI MMCFG logic has
reserved all MMCFG spaces so that EINJ can't reserve it again.
We already trust the ACPI/APEI code when using the EINJ interface
so it is not a big leap to also trust it to access the right
MMCFG addresses. Skip address checking to allow the access.

Give MPX a real config option. The CPUs that support it (referenced
here):
https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/402393
are not available publicly yet. Right now only the software emulator
provides MPX for the general public.

Users have no business installing custom code segments into the
GDT, and segments that are not present but are otherwise valid
are a historical source of interesting attacks.
For completeness, block attempts to set the L bit. (Prior to
this patch, the L bit would have been silently dropped.)
This is an ABI break. I've checked glibc, musl, and Wine, and
none of them look like they'll have any trouble.
Note to stable maintainers: this is a hardening patch that fixes
no known bugs. Given the possibility of ABI issues, this
probably shouldn't be backported quickly.

to update the call from entry_32 (i386 version). This patch corrects
that.
2) I was tracing some code and found that the sched_switch tracepoint
was showing tasks in the INTERRUPTIBLE state as RUNNING. This was
due to the updates to convert preempt_count into a per_cpu variable.
The tracepoint logic was made to use the tasks saved_preempt_count
which could hold a stale "PREEMPT_ACTIVE", instead of using the
current preempt_count() call.

Following the suggestions from Andrew Morton and Stephen Rothwell,
Dont expand the ARCH list in kernel/gcov/Kconfig. Instead,
define a ARCH_HAS_GCOV_PROFILE_ALL bool which architectures
can enable.
set ARCH_HAS_GCOV_PROFILE_ALL on Architectures where it was
previously allowed + ARM64 which I tested.

Now, we have prepared to avoid using debug-pagealloc in boottime. So
introduce new kernel-parameter to disable debug-pagealloc in boottime, and
makes related functions to be disabled in this case.
Only non-intuitive part is change of guard page functions. Because guard
page is effective only if debug-pagealloc is enabled, turning off
according to debug-pagealloc is reasonable thing to do.
