19a6afb23e tuntap: set SOCK_ZEROCOPY flag during open
Commit 54f968d6ef
(tuntap: move socket to tun_file) forgets to set SOCK_ZEROCOPY flag, which will
prevent vhost_net from doing zercopy w/ tap. This patch fixes this by setting
it during file open.

92bb73ea2c tuntap: fix a possible race between queue selection and changing queues
Complier may generate codes that re-read the tun->numqueues during
tun_select_queue(). This may be a race if vlan->numqueues were changed in the
same time and can lead unexpected result (e.g. very huge value).

We need prevent the compiler from generating such codes by adding an
ACCESS_ONCE() to make sure tun->numqueues were only read once.

Bug were introduced by commit c8d68e6be1
(tuntap: multiqueue support).

8e6d91ae09 tuntap: forbid changing mq flag for persistent device
We currently allow changing the mq flag (IFF_MULTI_QUEUE) for a persistent
device. This will result a mismatch between the number the queues in netdev and
tuntap. This is because we only allocate a 1q netdevice when IFF_MULTI_QUEUE was
not specified, so when we set the IFF_MULTI_QUEUE and try to attach more queues
later, netif_set_real_num_tx_queues() may fail which result a single queue
netdevice with multiple sockets attached.

Solve this by disallowing changing the mq flag for persistent device.

Bug was introduced by commit edfb6a148c
(tuntap: reduce memory using of queues).

Conflicts:

	drivers/net/ethernet/emulex/benet/be.h

Most conflicts were minor overlapping stuff.

e8dbad66ef tuntap: correct the return value in tun_set_iff()
commit (3be8fbab tuntap: fix error return code in tun_set_iff()) breaks the
creation of multiqueue tuntap since it forbids to create more than one queues
for a multiqueue tuntap device. We need return 0 instead -EBUSY here since we
don't want to re-initialize the device when one or more queues has been already
attached. Add a comment and correct the return value to zero.

The e{uid,gid} --> {uid,gid} credentials fix conflicted with the
cleanup in net-next to now pass cred structs around.

The be2net driver had a bug fix in 'net' that overlapped with the VLAN
interface changes by Patrick McHardy in net-next.

An IGB conflict existed because in 'net' the build_skb() support was
reverted, and in 'net-next' there was a comment style fix within that
code.

Several batman-adv conflicts were resolved by making sure that all
calls to batadv_is_my_mac() are changed to have a new bat_priv first
argument.

Eric Dumazet's TS ECR fix in TCP in 'net' conflicted with the F-RTO
rewrite in 'net-next', mostly overlapping changes.

Thanks to Stephen Rothwell and Antonio Quartulli for help with several
of these merge resolutions.

38502af77e tuntap: set transport header before passing it to kernel
Currently, for the packets receives from tuntap, before doing header check,
kernel just reset the transport header in netif_receive_skb() which pretends no
l4 header. This is suboptimal for precise packet length estimation (introduced
in 1def9238) which needs correct l4 header for gso packets.

So this patch set the transport header to csum_start for partial checksum
packets, otherwise it first try skb_flow_dissect(), if it fails, just reset the
transport header.

b67bfe0d42 hlist: drop the node parameter from iterators
I'm not sure why, but the hlist for each entry iterators were conceived

        list_for_each_entry(pos, head, member)

The hlist ones were greedy and wanted an extra parameter:

        hlist_for_each_entry(tpos, pos, head, member)

Why did they need an extra pos parameter? I'm not quite sure. Not only
they don't really need it, it also prevents the iterator from looking
exactly like the list iterator, which is unfortunate.

Besides the semantic patch, there was some manual work required:

 - Fix up the actual hlist iterators in linux/list.h
 - Fix up the declaration of other iterators based on the hlist ones.
 - A very small amount of places were using the 'node' parameter, this
 was modified to use 'obj->member' instead.
 - Coccinelle didn't handle the hlist_for_each_entry_safe iterator
 properly, so those had to be fixed up manually.

The semantic patch which is mostly the work of Peter Senna Tschudin is here:

c9af6db4c1 net: Fix possible wrong checksum generation.
Patch cef401de7b (net: fix possible wrong checksum
generation) fixed wrong checksum calculation but it broke TSO by
defining new GSO type but not a netdev feature for that type.
net_gso_ok() would not allow hardware checksum/segmentation
offload of such packets without the feature.

Following patch fixes TSO and wrong checksum. This patch uses
same logic that Eric Dumazet used. Patch introduces new flag
SKBTX_SHARED_FRAG if at least one frag can be modified by
the user. but SKBTX_SHARED_FRAG flag is kept in skb shared
info tx_flags rather than gso_type.

tx_flags is better compared to gso_type since we can have skb with
shared frag without gso packet. It does not link SHARED_FRAG to
GSO, So there is no need to define netdev feature for this.

The ipv6 route.c conflict is simple, just ignore the 'net' side change

The e1000e conflict is an addition of a new statistic in the ethtool

The vmxnet3 conflict is about one change in 'net' removing a guarding

The iwlwifi conflict is dealing with a WARN_ON() conversion in

9e85722d58 tuntap: allow polling/writing/reading when detached
We forbid polling, writing and reading when the file were detached, this may
complex the user in several cases:

- when guest pass some buffers to vhost/qemu and then disable some queues,
  host/qemu needs to do its own cleanup on those buffers which is complex
  sometimes. We can do this simply by allowing a user can still write to an
  disabled queue. Write to an disabled queue will cause the packet pass to the
  kernel and read will get nothing.
- align the polling behavior with macvtap which never fails when the queue is
  created. This can simplify the polling errors handling of its user (e.g vhost)

We can simply achieve this by don't assign NULL to tfile->tun when detached.

cef401de7b net: fix possible wrong checksum generation
Pravin Shelar mentioned that GSO could potentially generate
wrong TX checksum if skb has fragments that are overwritten
by the user between the checksum computation and transmit.

He suggested to linearize skbs but this extra copy can be
avoided for normal tcp skbs cooked by tcp_sendmsg().

This patch introduces a new SKB_GSO_SHARED_FRAG flag, set
in skb_shinfo(skb)->gso_type if at least one frag can be
modified by the user.

Typical sources of such possible overwrites are {vm}splice(),
sendfile(), and macvtap/tun/virtio_net drivers.

b8732fb7f8 tuntap: limit the number of flow caches
We create new flow caches when a new flow is identified by tuntap, This may lead
some issues:

- userspace may produce a huge amount of short live flows to exhaust host memory
- the unlimited number of flow caches may produce a long list which increase the
  time in the linear searching

Solve this by introducing a limit of total number of flow caches.

edfb6a148c tuntap: reduce memory using of queues
A MAX_TAP_QUEUES(1024) queues of tuntap device is always allocated
unconditionally even userspace only requires a single queue device. This is
unnecessary and will lead a very high order of page allocation when has a high
possibility to fail. Solving this by creating a one queue net device when
userspace only use one queue and also reduce MAX_TAP_QUEUES to
DEFAULT_MAX_NUM_RSS_QUEUES which can guarantee the success of

5dbbaf2de8 tun: fix LSM/SELinux labeling of tun/tap devices
This patch corrects some problems with LSM/SELinux that were introduced
with the multiqueue patchset. The problem stems from the fact that the
multiqueue work changed the relationship between the tun device and its
associated socket; before the socket persisted for the life of the
device, however after the multiqueue changes the socket only persisted
for the life of the userspace connection (fd open). For non-persistent
devices this is not an issue, but for persistent devices this can cause
the tun device to lose its SELinux label.

We correct this problem by adding an opaque LSM security blob to the
tun device struct which allows us to have the LSM security state, e.g.
SELinux labeling information, persist for the lifetime of the tun
device. In the process we tweak the LSM hooks to work with this new
approach to TUN device/socket labeling and introduce a new LSM hook,
security_tun_dev_attach_queue(), to approve requests to attach to a
TUN queue via TUNSETQUEUE.

The SELinux code has been adjusted to match the new LSM hooks, the
other LSMs do not make use of the LSM TUN controls. This patch makes
use of the recently added "tun_socket:attach_queue" permission to
restrict access to the TUNSETQUEUE operation. On older SELinux
policies which do not define the "tun_socket:attach_queue" permission
the access control decision for TUNSETQUEUE will be handled according
to the SELinux policy's unknown permission setting.

Michael points out that even after Stefan's fix the TUNSETIFF is still allowed

6e331f4c83 tuntap: refuse to re-attach to different tun_struct
Multiqueue tun devices support detaching a tun_file from its tun_struct
and re-attaching at a later point in time. This allows users to disable
a specific queue temporarily.

ioctl(TUNSETIFF) allows the user to specify the network interface to
attach by name. This means the user can attempt to attach to interface
"B" after detaching from interface "A".

The driver is not designed to support this so check we are re-attaching

4008e97f86 tuntap: fix ambigious multiqueue API
The current multiqueue API is ambigious which may confuse both user and LSM to
do things correctly:

- Both TUNSETIFF and TUNSETQUEUE could be used to create the queues of a tuntap
  device.
- TUNSETQUEUE were used to disable and enable a specific queue of the
  device. But since the state of tuntap were completely removed from the queue,
  it could be used to attach to another device (there's no such kind of
  requirement currently, and it needs new kind of LSM policy.
- TUNSETQUEUE could be used to attach to a persistent device without any
  queues. This kind of attching bypass the necessary checking during TUNSETIFF
  and may lead unexpected result.

So this patch tries to make a cleaner and simpler API by:

- Only allow TUNSETIFF to create queues.
- TUNSETQUEUE could be only used to disable and enabled the queues of a device,
  and the state of the tuntap device were not detachd from the queues when it
  was disabled, so TUNSETQUEUE could be only used after TUNSETIFF and with the
   same device.

This is done by introducing a list which keeps track of all queues which were
disabled. The queue would be moved between this list and tfiles[] array when it
was enabled/disabled. A pointer of the tun_struct were also introdued to track
the device it belongs to when it was disabled.

After the change, the isolation between management and application could be done
through: TUNSETIFF were only called by management software and TUNSETQUEUE were
only called by application.For LSM/SELinux, the things left is to do proper
check during tun_set_queue() if needed.

5d09710925 tun: only queue packets on device
Historically tun supported two modes of operation:
- in default mode, a small number of packets would get queued
  at the device, the rest would be queued in qdisc
- in one queue mode, all packets would get queued at the device

This might have made sense up to a point where we made the
queue depth for both modes the same and set it to
a huge value (500) so unless the consumer
is stuck the chance of losing packets is small.

Thus in practice both modes behave the same, but the
default mode has some problems:
- if packets are never consumed, fragments are never orphaned
  which cases a DOS for sender using zero copy transmit
- overrun errors are hard to diagnose: fifo error is incremented
  only once so you can not distinguish between
  userspace that is stuck and a transient failure,
  tcpdump on the device does not show any traffic

Userspace solves this simply by enabling IFF_ONE_QUEUE
but there seems to be little point in not doing the
right thing for everyone, by default.

96442e4242 tuntap: choose the txq based on rxq
This patch implements a simple multiqueue flow steering policy - tx follows rx
for tun/tap. The idea is simple, it just choose the txq based on which rxq it
comes. The flow were identified through the rxhash of a skb, and the hash to
queue mapping were recorded in a hlist with an ageing timer to retire the
mapping. The mapping were created when tun receives packet from userspace, and
was quired in .ndo_select_queue().

I run co-current TCP_CRR test and didn't see any mapping manipulation helpers in

c8d68e6be1 tuntap: multiqueue support
This patch converts tun/tap to a multiqueue devices and expose the multiqueue
queues as multiple file descriptors to userspace. Internally, each tun_file were
abstracted as a queue, and an array of pointers to tun_file structurs were

the transmit queue. This policy may be changed in the future.

6e914fc707 tuntap: RCUify dereferencing between tun_struct and tun_file
RCU were introduced in this patch to synchronize the dereferences between
tun_struct and tun_file. All tun_{get|put} were replaced with RCU, the
dereference from one to other must be done under rtnl lock or rcu read critical
region.

This is needed for the following patches since the one of the goal of multiqueue
tuntap is to allow adding or removing queues during workload. Without RCU,
control path would hold tx locks when adding or removing queues (which may cause
sme delay) and it's hard to change the number of queues without stopping the net
device. With the help of rcu, there's also no need for tun_file hold an refcnt
to tun_struct.

54f968d6ef tuntap: move socket to tun_file
Current tuntap makes use of the socket receive queue as its tx queue. To
implement multiple tx queues for tuntap and enable the ability of adding and
removing queues during workload, the first step is to move the socket related
structures to tun_file. Then we could let multiple fds/sockets to be attached to
the tuntap.

This patch removes tun_sock and moves socket related structures from tun_sock or
tun_struct to tun_file. Two exceptions are tap_filter and sock_fprog, they are
still kept in tun_structure since they are used to filter packets for the net
device instead of per transmit queue (at least I see no requirements for
them). After those changes, socket were created and destroyed during file open
and close (instead of device creation and destroy), the socket structures could
be dereferenced from tun_file instead of the file of tun_struct structure
itself.

For persisent device, since we purge during datching and wouldn't queue any
packets when no interface were attached, there's no behaviod changes before and
after this patch, so the changes were transparent to the userspace. To keep the
attributes such as sndbuf, socket filter and vnet header, those would be
re-initialize after a new interface were attached to an persist device.

6a328d8c6f cgroup: net_cls: Rework update socket logic
The cgroup logic part of net_cls is very similar as the one in
net_prio. Let's stream line the net_cls logic with the net_prio one.

The net_prio update logic was changed by following commit (note there
were some changes necessary later on)

commit 406a3c638c
Author: John Fastabend <john.r.fastabend@intel.com>
Date:   Fri Jul 20 10:39:25 2012 +0000

    net: netprio_cgroup: rework update socket logic

    Instead of updating the sk_cgrp_prioidx struct field on every send
    this only updates the field when a task is moved via cgroup
    infrastructure.

    This allows sockets that may be used by a kernel worker thread
    to be managed. For example in the iscsi case today a user can
    put iscsid in a netprio cgroup and control traffic will be sent
    with the correct sk_cgrp_prioidx value set but as soon as data
    is sent the kernel worker thread isssues a send and sk_cgrp_prioidx
    is updated with the kernel worker threads value which is the
    default case.

    It seems more correct to only update the field when the user
    explicitly sets it via control group infrastructure. This allows
    the users to manage sockets that may be used with other threads.

Since classid is now updated when the task is moved between the
cgroups, we don't have to call sock_update_classid() from various
places to ensure we always using the latest classid value.

[v2: Use iterate_fd() instead of open coding]

437589a74b Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
 "This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
  support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
  enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
  namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
  filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
  nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.

  The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
  subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
  from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
  come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
  Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
  namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.

  The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
  union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
  Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
  handle those places with simple trivial patches.

  Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
  quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
  Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
  for most of the code size growth in my git tree.

  Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
  "capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
  root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
  non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.

  While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
  I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
  netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
  usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.

  Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
  problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
  linux-next.

  After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
  win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

Fix up some fairly trivial conflicts in netfilter uid/git logging code.

66d1b9263a tun: don't zeroize sock->file on detach
This is a fix for bug, introduced in 3.4 kernel by commit
1ab5ecb90c ("tun: don't hold network
namespace by tun sockets"), which, among other things, replaced simple
sock_put() by sk_release_kernel(). Below is sequence, which leads to
oops for non-persistent devices:

tun_chr_close()
tun_detach()				<== tun->socket.file = NULL
tun_free_netdev()
sk_release_sock()
sock_release(sock->file == NULL)
iput(SOCK_INODE(sock)) <== dereference on NULL pointer

This patch just removes zeroing of socket's file from __tun_detach().
sock_release() will do this.

b09e786bd1 tun: fix a crash bug and a memory leak
This patch fixes a crash
tun_chr_close -> netdev_run_todo -> tun_free_netdev -> sk_release_kernel ->
sock_release -> iput(SOCK_INODE(sock))
introduced by commit 1ab5ecb90c

The problem is that this socket is embedded in struct tun_struct, it has
no inode, iput is called on invalid inode, which modifies invalid memory
and optionally causes a crash.

sock_release also decrements sockets_in_use, this causes a bug that
"sockets: used" field in /proc/*/net/sockstat keeps on decreasing when
creating and closing tun devices.

This patch introduces a flag SOCK_EXTERNALLY_ALLOCATED that instructs
sock_release to not free the inode and not decrement sockets_in_use,
fixing both memory corruption and sockets_in_use underflow.

It should be backported to 3.3 an 3.4 stabke.

v3: added previously removed sock_put() to the tun_release() callback, because

v2: sk_release_kernel() used for socket release. Dummy tun_release() is

TUN was designed to destroy it's socket on network namesapce shutdown. But this
will never happen for persistent device, because it's socket holds network

This patch removes of holding network namespace by TUN socket and replaces it
by creating socket in init_net and then changing it's net it to desired one. On

bebd097a0a tun: teach the tun/tap driver to support netpoll
Commit 8d8fc29d02 changed the behavior of slave
devices in regards to netpoll. Specifically it created a mutually exclusive
relationship between being a slave and a netpoll-capable device. This creates
problems for KVM because guests relied on needing netconsole active on a slave
device to a bridge. Ideally libvirtd could just attach netconsole to the bridge
device instead, but thats currently infeasible, because while the bridge device
supports netpoll, it requires that all slave interface also support it, but the
tun/tap driver currently does not. The most direct solution is to teach tun/tap
to support netpoll, which is implemented by the patch below.

I've not tested this yet, but its pretty straightforward.

allocate the receive skb with routines like dev_alloc_skb() that reserves
additional space for use by network protocol stack but tun does not.

Because of the lack of padding, when the packet is passed through bridge
netfilter a new skb has to be allocated.

8825537521 net: tun: convert to hw_features
This changes offload setting behaviour to what I think is correct:
 - offloads set via ethtool mean what admin wants to use (by default
   he wants 'em all)
 - offloads set via ioctl() mean what userspace is expecting to get
   (this limits which admin wishes are granted)
 - TUN_NOCHECKSUM is ignored, as it might cause broken packets when
   forwarded (ip_summed == CHECKSUM_UNNECESSARY means that checksum

If TUN_NOCHECKSUM is implemented, it should set skb->csum_* and
skb->ip_summed (= CHECKSUM_PARTIAL) for known protocols and let others

578454ff7e driver core: add devname module aliases to allow module on-demand auto-loading
This adds:
  alias: devname:<name>
to some common kernel modules, which will allow the on-demand loading
of the kernel module when the device node is accessed.

Ideally all these modules would be compiled-in, but distros seems too
much in love with their modularization that we need to cover the common
cases with this new facility. It will allow us to remove a bunch of pretty
useless init scripts and modprobes from init scripts.

The static device node aliases will be carried in the module itself. The
program depmod will extract this information to a file in the module directory:
  $ cat /lib/modules/2.6.34-00650-g537b60d-dirty/modules.devname
  # Device nodes to trigger on-demand module loading.
  microcode cpu/microcode c10:184
  fuse fuse c10:229
  ppp_generic ppp c108:0
  tun net/tun c10:200
  dm_mod mapper/control c10:235

Udev will pick up the depmod created file on startup and create all the
static device nodes which the kernel modules specify, so that these modules
get automatically loaded when the device node is accessed:
  $ /sbin/udevd --debug
  ...
  static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/cpu/microcode' c10:184
  static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/fuse' c10:229
  static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/ppp' c108:0
  static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/net/tun' c10:200
  static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/mapper/control' c10:235
  udev_rules_apply_static_dev_perms: chmod '/dev/net/tun' 0666
  udev_rules_apply_static_dev_perms: chmod '/dev/fuse' 0666

A few device nodes are switched to statically allocated numbers, to allow
the static nodes to work. This might also useful for systems which still run
a plain static /dev, which is completely unsafe to use with any dynamic minor
numbers.

Note:
The devname aliases must be limited to the *common* and *single*instance*
device nodes, like the misc devices, and never be used for conceptually limited
systems like the loop devices, which should rather get fixed properly and get a
control node for losetup to talk to, instead of creating a random number of
device nodes in advance, regardless if they are ever used.

This facility is to hide the mess distros are creating with too modualized
kernels, and just to hide that these modules are not compiled-in, and not to
paper-over broken concepts. Thanks! :)

d9d52b5178 tun: add ioctl to modify vnet header size
virtio added mergeable buffers mode where 2 bytes of extra info is put
after vnet header but before actual data (tun does not need this data).
In hindsight, it would have been better to add the new info *before* the
packet: as it is, users need a lot of tricky code to skip the extra 2
bytes in the middle of the iovec, and in fact applications seem to get
it wrong, and only work with specific iovec layout. The fact we might
need to split iovec also means we might in theory overflow iovec max
size.

This patch adds a simpler way for applications to handle this,
and future proofs the interface against further extensions,
by making the size of the virtio net header configurable
from userspace. As a result, tun driver will simply
skip the extra 2 bytes on both input and output.

4381548237 net: sock_def_readable() and friends RCU conversion
sk_callback_lock rwlock actually protects sk->sk_sleep pointer, so we
need two atomic operations (and associated dirtying) per incoming
packet.

RCU conversion is pretty much needed :

1) Add a new structure, called "struct socket_wq" to hold all fields
that will need rcu_read_lock() protection (currently: a
wait_queue_head_t and a struct fasync_struct pointer).

[Future patch will add a list anchor for wakeup coalescing]

2) Attach one of such structure to each "struct socket" created in
sock_alloc_inode().

3) Respect RCU grace period when freeing a "struct socket_wq"

4) Change sk_sleep pointer in "struct sock" by sk_wq, pointer to "struct
socket_wq"

5) Change sk_sleep() function to use new sk->sk_wq instead of
sk->sk_sleep

6) Change sk_has_sleeper() to wq_has_sleeper() that must be used inside
a rcu_read_lock() section.

7) Change all sk_has_sleeper() callers to :
  - Use rcu_read_lock() instead of read_lock(&sk->sk_callback_lock)
  - Use wq_has_sleeper() to eventually wakeup tasks.
  - Use rcu_read_unlock() instead of read_unlock(&sk->sk_callback_lock)

8) sock_wake_async() is modified to use rcu protection as well.

9) Exceptions :
  macvtap, drivers/net/tun.c, af_unix use integrated "struct socket_wq"
instead of dynamically allocated ones. They dont need rcu freeing.

Some cleanups or followups are probably needed, (possible
sk_callback_lock conversion to a spinlock for example...).

0110d6f22f tun: orphan an skb on tx
The following situation was observed in the field:
tap1 sends packets, tap2 does not consume them, as a result
tap1 can not be closed. This happens because
tun/tap devices can hang on to skbs undefinitely.

As noted by Herbert, possible solutions include a timeout followed by a
copy/change of ownership of the skb, or always copying/changing
ownership if we're going into a hostile device.

This patch implements the second approach.

Note: one issue still remaining is that since skbs
keep reference to tun socket and tun socket has a
reference to tun device, we won't flush backlog,
instead simply waiting for all skbs to get transmitted.
At least this is not user-triggerable, and
this was not reported in practice, my assumption is
other devices besides tap complete an skb
within finite time after it has been queued.

A possible solution for the second issue
would not to have socket reference the device,
instead, implement dev->destructor for tun, and
wait for all skbs to complete there, but this
needs some thought, probably too risky for 2.6.34.

05c2828c72 tun: export underlying socket
Tun device looks similar to a packet socket
in that both pass complete frames from/to userspace.

This patch fills in enough fields in the socket underlying tun driver
to support sendmsg/recvmsg operations, and message flags
MSG_TRUNC and MSG_DONTWAIT, and exports access to this socket

This way, code using raw sockets to inject packets

The tun driver is the only code in the kernel that operates
on a character device with struct ifreq. Change the driver
to handle the conversion itself so we can contain the
remaining ifreq handling in the socket layer.

This also fixes a bug in the handling of invalid ioctl
numbers on an unbound tun device. The driver treats this
as a TUNSETIFF in native mode, but there is no way for
the generic compat_ioctl() function to emulate this
behaviour. Possibly the driver was only doing this
accidentally anyway, but if any code relies on this
misfeature, it now also works in compat mode.

2b980dbd77 lsm: Add hooks to the TUN driver
The TUN driver lacks any LSM hooks which makes it difficult for LSM modules,
such as SELinux, to enforce access controls on network traffic generated by
TUN users; this is particularly problematic for virtualization apps such as
QEMU and KVM. This patch adds three new LSM hooks designed to control the
creation and attachment of TUN devices, the hooks are:

 * security_tun_dev_create()
   Provides access control for the creation of new TUN devices

 * security_tun_dev_post_create()
   Provides the ability to create the necessary socket LSM state for newly
   created TUN devices

 * security_tun_dev_attach()
   Provides access control for attaching to existing, persistent TUN devices
   and the ability to update the TUN device's socket LSM state as necessary

876bfd4d0f tun: Extend RTNL lock coverage over whole ioctl
As it is, parts of the ioctl runs under the RTNL and parts of
it do not. The unlocked section is still protected by the BKL,
but there can be subtle races. For example, Eric Biederman and
Paul Moore observed that if two threads tried to create two tun
devices on the same file descriptor, then unexpected results
may occur.

As there isn't anything in the ioctl that is expected to sleep
indefinitely, we can prevent this from occurring by extending
the RTNL lock coverage.

This also allows to get rid of the BKL.

Finally, I changed tun_get_iff to take a tun device in order to
avoid calling tun_put which would dead-lock as it also tries to
take the RTNL lock.

d23e43658a tun: Fix device unregister race
It is currently possible for an asynchronous device unregister

is because the unregister in tun_chr_close only checks whether

f85ba78068 tun: add IFF_TUN_EXCL flag to avoid opening a persistent device.
When creating a certain types of VPN, NetworkManager will first attempt
to find an available tun device by iterating through 'vpn%d' until it
finds one that isn't already busy. Then it'll set that to be persistent
and owned by the otherwise unprivileged user that the VPN dæmon itself
runs as.

There's a race condition here -- during the period where the vpn%d
device is created and we're waiting for the VPN dæmon to actually
connect and use it, if we try to create _another_ device we could end up
re-using the same one -- because trying to open it again doesn't get
-EBUSY as it would while it's _actually_ busy.

So solve this, we add an IFF_TUN_EXCL flag which causes tun_set_iff() to
fail if it would be opening an existing persistent tundevice -- so that
we can make sure we're getting an entirely _new_ device.

Since the tun device is the persistent data structure here (when

9c3fea6ab0 tun: Only free a netdev when all tun descriptors are closed
The commit c70f182940 ("tun: Fix
races between tun_net_close and free_netdev") fixed a race where
an asynchronous deletion of a tun device can hose a poll(2) on
a tun fd attached to that device.

However, this came at the cost of moving the tun wait queue into
the tun file data structure. The problem with this is that it
imposes restrictions on when and where the tun device can access
the wait queue since the tun file may change at any time due to
detaching and reattaching.

In particular, now that we need to use the wait queue on the
receive path it becomes difficult to properly synchronise this
with the detachment of the tun device.

This patch solves the original race in a different way. Since
the race is only because the underlying memory gets freed, we
can prevent it simply by ensuring that we don't do that until
all tun descriptors ever attached to the device (even if they
have since be detached because they may still be sitting in poll)
have been closed.

This is done by using reference counting the attached tun file
descriptors. The refcount in tun->sk has been reappropriated
for this purpose since it was already being used for that, albeit
from the opposite angle.

Note that we no longer zero tfile->tun since tun_get will return
NULL anyway after the refcount on tfile hits zero. Instead it
represents whether this device has ever been attached to a device.

cfbf84fcbc tun: Fix unicast filter overflow
Tap devices can make use of a small MAC filter set via the

33dccbb050 tun: Limit amount of queued packets per device
Unlike a normal socket path, the tuntap device send path does
not have any accounting. This means that the user-space sender
may be able to pin down arbitrary amounts of kernel memory by
continuing to send data to an end-point that is congested.

Even when this isn't an issue because of limited queueing at
most end points, this can also be a problem because its only
response to congestion is packet loss. That is, when those
local queues at the end-point fills up, the tuntap device will
start wasting system time because it will continue to send
data there which simply gets dropped straight away.

Of course one could argue that everybody should do congestion
control end-to-end, unfortunately there are people in this world
still hooked on UDP, and they don't appear to be going away
anywhere fast. In fact, we've always helped them by performing
accounting in our UDP code, the sole purpose of which is to
provide congestion feedback other than through packet loss.

This patch attempts to apply the same bandaid to the tuntap device.
It creates a pseudo-socket object which is used to account our
packets just as a normal socket does for UDP. Of course things
are a little complex because we're actually reinjecting traffic
back into the stack rather than out of the stack.

The stack complexities however should have been resolved by preceding
patches. So this one can simply start using skb_set_owner_w.

For now the accounting is essentially disabled by default for
backwards compatibility. In particular, we set the cap to INT_MAX.
This is so that existing applications don't get confused by the
sudden arrival EAGAIN errors.

In future we may wish (or be forced to) do this by default.

c70f182940 tun: Fix races between tun_net_close and free_netdev.
The tun code does not cope gracefully if the network device goes away before
the tun file descriptor is closed. It looks like we can trigger this with
rmmod, and moving tun devices between network namespaces will allow this
to be triggered when network namespaces exit.

To fix this I introduce an intermediate data structure tun_file which
holds a count of users and a pointer to the struct tun_struct. tun_get
increments that reference count if it is greater than 0. tun_put decrements
that reference count and detaches from the network device if the count is 0.

While we have a file attached to the network device I hold a reference
to the network device keeping it from going away completely.

When a network device is unregistered I decrement the count of the
attached tun_file and if that was the last user I detach the tun_file,
and all processes on read_wait are woken up to ensure they do not
sleep indefinitely. As some of those sleeps happen with the count on
the tun device elevated waking up the read waiters ensures that
tun_file will be detached in a timely manner.

f271b2cc78 tun: Fix/rewrite packet filtering logic
Please see the following thread to get some context on this
	http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdev&m=121564433018903&w=2

Basically the issue is that current multi-cast filtering stuff in
the TUN/TAP driver is seriously broken.
Original patch went in without proper review and ACK. It was broken and
confusing to start with and subsequent patches broke it completely.
To give you an idea of what's broken here are some of the issues:

- Very confusing comments throughout the code that imply that the
character device is a network interface in its own right, and that packets
are passed between the two nics. Which is completely wrong.

- Wrong set of ioctls is used for setting up filters. They look like
shortcuts for manipulating state of the tun/tap network interface but
in reality manipulate the state of the TX filter.

- ioctls that were originally used for setting address of the the TX filter
got "fixed" and now set the address of the network interface itself. Which
made filter totaly useless.

- Filtering is done too late. Instead of filtering early on, to avoid
unnecessary wakeups, filtering is done in the read() call.

The list goes on and on :)

So the patch cleans all that up. It introduces simple and clean interface for
setting up TX filters (TUNSETTXFILTER + tun_filter spec) and does filtering
before enqueuing the packets.

TX filtering is useful in the scenarios where TAP is part of a bridge, in
which case it gets all broadcast, multicast and potentially other packets when
the bridge is learning. So for example Ethernet tunnelling app may want to
setup TX filters to avoid tunnelling multicast traffic. QEMU and other
hypervisors can push RX filtering that is currently done in the guest into the
host context therefore saving wakeups and unnecessary data transfer.

e35259a953 tun: Persistent devices can get stuck in xoff state
The scenario goes like this. App stops reading from tun/tap.
TX queue gets full and driver does netif_stop_queue().
App closes fd and TX queue gets flushed as part of the cleanup.
Next time the app opens tun/tap and starts reading from it but
the xoff state is not cleared. We're stuck.
Normally xoff state is cleared when netdev is brought up. But
in the case of persistent devices this happens only during
initial setup.

The fix is trivial. If device is already up when an app opens
it we clear xoff state and that gets things moving again.

07240fd090 tun: Interface to query tun/tap features.
The problem with introducing checksum offload and gso to tun is they
need to set dev->features to enable GSO and/or checksumming, which is
supposed to be done before register_netdevice(), ie. as part of
TUNSETIFF.

Unfortunately, TUNSETIFF has always just ignored flags it doesn't
understand, so there's no good way of detecting whether the kernel
supports new IFF_ flags.

This patch implements a TUNGETFEATURES ioctl which returns all the valid IFF
flags. It could be extended later to include other features.

Here's an example program which uses it:

#include <linux/if_tun.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/ioctl.h>
#include <sys/stat.h>
#include <fcntl.h>
#include <err.h>

	const char *name;
} known_flags[] = {
	{ IFF_TUN, "TUN" },
	{ IFF_TAP, "TAP" },
	{ IFF_NO_PI, "NO_PI" },
	{ IFF_ONE_QUEUE, "ONE_QUEUE" },
};

int main()
{
	unsigned int features, i;

	int netfd = open("/dev/net/tun", O_RDWR);
	if (netfd < 0)
		err(1, "Opening /dev/net/tun");

	if (ioctl(netfd, TUNGETFEATURES, &features) != 0) {
		printf("Kernel does not support TUNGETFEATURES, guessing\n");
		features = (IFF_TUN|IFF_TAP|IFF_NO_PI|IFF_ONE_QUEUE);
	}
	printf("Available features are: ");
	for (i = 0; i < sizeof(known_flags)/sizeof(known_flags[0]); i++) {
		if (features & known_flags[i].flag) {
			features &= ~known_flags[i].flag;
			printf("%s ", known_flags[i].name);

fc54c65853 [TUN]: Allow to register tun devices in namespace.
This is basically means that a net is set for a new device, but
actually also involves two more steps:

1. mark the tun device as "local", i.e. do not allow for it to
   move across namespaces.

This is done so, since tun device is most often associated to some
file (and thus to some process) and moving the device alone is not
valid while keeping the file and the process outside. The need in
ability to move a detached persistent device is to be investigated
later.

2. get the tun device's net when tun becomes attached and put one
   when it becomes detached.

This is needed to handle the case when a task owning the tun dies,
but a files lives for some more time - in this case we must not
allow for net to be freed, since its exit hook will spoil that file's
private data by unregistering the tun from under tun_chr_close.

a26af1e08a tun: impossible to deassert IFF_ONE_QUEUE or IFF_NO_PI
From: "Nathaniel Filardo" <nwfilardo@gmail.com>

Taken from http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9806

The TUN/TAP driver only permits one-way transitions of IFF_NO_PI or
IFF_ONE_QUEUE during the lifetime of a tap/tun interface. Note that
tun_set_iff contains

 541         if (ifr->ifr_flags & IFF_NO_PI)
 542                 tun->flags |= TUN_NO_PI;
 543
 544         if (ifr->ifr_flags & IFF_ONE_QUEUE)
 545                 tun->flags |= TUN_ONE_QUEUE;

This is easily fixed by adding else branches which clear these bits.

Steps to reproduce:

This is easily reproduced by setting an interface persistant using tunctl then
attempting to open it as IFF_TAP or IFF_TUN, without asserting the IFF_NO_PI
flag. The ioctl() will succeed and the ifr.flags word is not modified, but the
interface remains in IFF_NO_PI mode (as it was set by tunctl).

This was just the low-hanging fruit in drivers/net; plenty more drivers
remain to be updated.

881d966b48 [NET]: Make the device list and device lookups per namespace.
This patch makes most of the generic device layer network
namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a
network namespace variable, and then it picks up
a few associated variables. The functions:
dev_getbyhwaddr
dev_getfirsthwbytype
dev_get_by_flags
dev_get_by_name
__dev_get_by_name
dev_get_by_index
__dev_get_by_index
dev_ioctl
dev_ethtool
dev_load
wireless_process_ioctl

were modified to take a network namespace argument, and
deal with it.

vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their
hooks will receive a network namespace argument.

So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was
affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle
multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was
simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network
namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network
stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces.

For now the ifindex generator is left global.

Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else
we will have corner case problems with migration when
we get that far.

At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack
that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making
the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until
the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when
you change namespaces, and the like.

Introduce a new syscall TUNSETGROUP for group ownership setting of tap

match.

36226a8ded [NET] tun/tap: fixed hw address handling
Fixed tun/tap driver's handling of hw addresses. The hw address is stored
in both the net_device.dev_addr and tun.dev_addr fields. These fields were
not kept synchronized, and in fact weren't even initialized to the same
value. Now during both init and when performing SIOCSIFHWADDR on the tun
device these values are both updated. However, if SIOCSIFHWADDR is
performed on the net device directly (for instance, setting the hw address
using ifconfig), the tun device does not get updated. Perhaps the
tun.dev_addr field should be removed completely at some point, as it is
redundant and net_device.dev_addr can be used anywhere it is used.

Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const
moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential

ca6bb5d7ab [NET]: Require CAP_NET_ADMIN to create tuntap devices.
The tuntap driver allows an admin to create persistent devices and
assign ownership of them to individual users. Unfortunately, relaxing

arbitrary new devices of their own. This patch corrects that, and

b03efcfb21 [NET]: Transform skb_queue_len() binary tests into skb_queue_empty()
This is part of the grand scheme to eliminate the qlen
member of skb_queue_head, and subsequently remove the
'list' member of sk_buff.

Most users of skb_queue_len() want to know if the queue is
empty or not, and that's trivially done with skb_queue_empty()
which doesn't use the skb_queue_head->qlen member and instead
uses the queue list emptyness as the test.

git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
