The commit below cleaned up error handling, in part by introducing a
registered flag bit. This however was not added to the device
structure leding to build failures:

We want to use WARN() as a variant of WARN_ON(), however a few drivers are
using WARN() internally. This patch renames these to WARNING() to avoid the
namespace clash. A few cases were defining but not using the thing, for those
cases I just deleted the definition.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
